Junkin’ on the Jefferson June 2-4

Five towns in two states have joined together for Junkin’ on the Jefferson. It will provide a weekend of shopping and other fun events. Bethany and Eagleville, Missouri, along with Osceola, Lamoni and Leon, Iowa are hosting this program.

State Champions, Class 2A, Shuttle Hurdle Relay

RUNNING INTO THE RECORD BOOKS: The Central Decatur Shuttle Hurdle team of (from left ) Cole Pedersen, Carter Boothe, Cauy Spidle, and Tyler Davis, accomplished a great feat at the State High School Track Meet last week. They won the Class 2A Shuttle Hurdle Relay event with a remarkable time of 59.22. This time also shattered their own school record that was set earlier this season. Lamoni Youth Dies in Early Morning Crash, Two Others injured

The Leon Parks and Rec has organized a 2nd annual Splash Dash 5K walk or run for Saturday, May 27, beginning at 10:00 a.m. at Harvey Park (swimming pool). Lots of fun activites are planned.

Paper registration fee is $30.00 or on-line registrations are available at www.eventbrite. com for $32.64. Entry fees will be accepted up to race day morning. Kids 10 and under are free. All proceeds go to the

Leon Swimming Pool for new equipment and improvements.

1st and 2nd place prizes will be given to all age groups.

Meat Smoking and Music Festival This Weekend Come on out to the Decatur County Fairgrounds on Saturday May 27th for a day filled with families, fun and music!

The 2nd Annual Festival will benefit “Journey For Joy”, a non-profit foundation that supports local cancer patients and their families.

To compete in the Meat Smoking Contest, just register on site from 6am to 8am.

There is a $50 fee to compete and Ribs and Loins will be supplied. Judging will be at 4:30 and plates of the competitor’s delicious BB-Q (with sides) will be available at 5pm for $8 each.

There will be a neighborhood garage sale and vendors in the North Pioneer Building from 8am - 2pm. There is no charge for the tables (you set up).

There will be fun activities and games for the kids to win prizes too.

Live music will start at 1pm and will feature some of Southern Iowa’s greatest bands including; Rick Burke, The Half Moons, Dave and Joel, Liquid Sunshine, Sierra Griggs, Rumley Brothers, Black Dirt Conspiracy and Einstein’s Junkyard. ID’s will be required.

Decatur County Museum Opening May 30

The Decatur County Museum will be opening next Tuesday, May 30, at 1:00 p.m. for the season. The summer hours will be Tuesdays and Fridays, 1:00 - 4:00 p.m. through August.

A Lamoni youth lost his life in a horrific auto accident, while two others were injured last week, while en route to school.

At approximately 7:30 a.m. on Tuesday, May 17, according

to the Iowa State Patrol, Logan Gilliland, age 16, and his brother, Landon age 14, a passenger, were traveling north bound in a 1993 Chevy pickup on Elk Chapel Road, south and west of Lamoni, when the

accident occured. Gilliland ran a stop sign at the intersection of 300th Street and was struck broadside on the driver’s side by a vehicle driven by Gracelyn Martin, age 16 of Lamoni.

Martin was eastbound in a 2007 Jeep Grand Cherokee.

Logan died at the scene, while his brother was ejected from the vehicle and was later transported by Life Flight to Methodist Hospital in Des Moines. Martin was transported to the Decatur County Hospital. The patrol indicated that the Gillilands were not wearing seatbelts.

The condition of Landon Gilliland or Martin were not ascertainable at press time.

The accident was investigated by the Iowa State Patrol, assisted by Decatur County Sheriff’s Department, Leon Police officers, Lamoni Police officers, EMS, and Decatur County Ambulance.

Courthouse Memorial Day Weekend Hours

The Clerk of Court’s office will be closed on Friday, May 26, due to state furlough.

The Decatur County Courthouse will be closed on Monday, May 29, in observance of Memorial Day. The jail/ dispatch will be open.

The Board of Supervisors will gather on Tuesday, May 30, for their regular meeting.

Some are checkin’ if it’s signed, some are too afraid to check, while others are not worried at all. The final thought of almost every graduating senior, jokingly “Is it signed?” Fifty-nine seniors walked across the stage Sunday afternoon to receive their diplomas to finish one “chapter” in their young lives and start a new one. Congratulations to the entire Class of 2017.

OBITUARIES

GILLILAND, Logan, 16, of Lamoni, Iowa, was killed in a motor vehicle accident on Wednesday, May 17, 2017, near his Lamoni, Iowa home. Funeral services were held at the Lamoni Community of Christ Church on Tuesday, May 23, 2017.

Interment was held in the Rose Hill Cemetery, Lamoni, Iowa.

Arrangements were through the Slade-O’Donnell Funeral Home in Leon and Lamoni, Iowa.

ELSON-CANFIELD, Rachel Lynn, 63, of Hot Springs, Arkansas, died following a courageous fight against Melanoma, on May 15, 2017, surrounded by the love of her husband, Ted, sons, Nathan and Ben, other family and her faithful companions, Samson and Delilah.

A memorial service will be held at 1:30 p.m. on Friday, May 26, 2017, at the Loving Chapel United Methodist Church in Leon, Iowa. Interment will follow at the Leon Cemetery, Leon, Iowa. A visitation will be held from 4:00 - 6:00 p.m. on Sunday, May 28, 2017 at St. Paul’s United Methodist Church in Cedar Rapids, Iowa, with a short prayer service at 3:30 p.m.

Arrangements are through the Slade-O’Donnell Funeral Home of Leon, Iowa.

Memorials may be directed to the First United Methodist Church of Hot Springs, Arkansas or St. Paul’s United Methodist Church of Cedar Rapids, Iowa, or Loving Chapel United Methodist Church in Leon, Iowa.

Thank You We want to thank everyone for all the acts of kindness and expressions of sympathy during our loss. For the prayers and flowers and huge out pouring at the visitation. It’s so nice to live in a small community like this where everyone comes together to give us their support. Thanks also to the hospital staff and EMTs when she was so sick. RACHEL LYNN ELSON-CANFIELD Rachel Lynn Elson-Canfield, 63, died following a courageous fight against melanoma, on May 15, 2017, at her home in Hot Springs, Arkansas surrounded by the love of her husband, Ted, sons, Nathan and Ben, other family, and her faithful companions, Samson and Delilah.

Rachel was the first daughter born to Charles Lee Elson and Nancy Ann (Netherton) Elson, arriving at 6:50 a.m. on August 28, 1953. She was born in Leon, Iowa, where she graduated from Central Decatur High School. During her youth, she participated in a wide variety of activities, including basketball, vocal music, instrumental music, art, drama, and many church activities.

She had a love for horses and any other critter, often bringing home strays or injured animals. Most free time was spent riding her horse, Flicka. She was a baptized member of the United Methodist Church since May 9, 1965.

Following high school, she was accepted into Luther College in Decorah, Iowa graduating Magna Cum Laude with a BA in Biology. She then attended Oklahoma State University in Stillwater, OK, where she obtained her Master’s degree in Speech therapy. Nathaniel her first son, during her first marriage, was born in Stillwater.

Following graduation from OSU, they lived for a brief time in Albuquerque NM, and she became a mother for the second time to Benjamin. Her time in Albuquerque solidified her preference for Southwestern culture and style, which ultimately led to many of her

artistic endeavors.

Following a move to Cedar Rapids, Iowa, and a brief time at home, Rachel became employed by Grant Wood AEA as a speech and language therapist. It was a career where her incredible organizational skills merged with her creativity. She worked in the elementary schools and had a passion for helping children grow and learn. Rachel married her soul mate, protector, and best friend, Ted Canfield on February 21, 1987.

Her family expanded to include Ted’s five children; raising all seven children was a focus for much of their marriage.

She continued to be actively involved in church at St. Paul’s United Methodist church. There, she and Ted taught Sunday school classes, played hand bells, and were actively involved in the Saturday Celebration service, where she provided music for 22 years.

She also served as President of the United Methodist Women, prior to moving from the area.

She retired in 2011, to pursue her dream of creating and selling art, with a specific focus on artistic gourd creations.

For the first few years, she experimented and perfected her art, while enjoying travel and camping with Ted. In 2015, Ted and Rachel moved to Hot Springs, Arkansas, which provided greater opportunity for fulfilling her dream, closer proximity to her youngest son, Ben with his wife Frances, and much better weather. Together they created their ideal home.

Her dream was further fulfilled with an art studio in her back yard and acceptance of her art in a well-established gallery in downtown Hot Springs, the Artist Workshop Gallery. She quickly became integrated into Hot Springs participating in her local Diamondhead community activities, Lions club, and First United Methodist Church, where she fell in love with a new group of friends in the Saints and Sinners class and again played hand bells.

She is survived by her mother, Nancy Elson; husband, Ted; sons, Nathaniel Iverson (Julie Barst) and Benjamin (Frances) Iverson; step children, Chris, Cheri, TJ, Chad (Kristina) and Todd (Shelly); 12 step grandchildren; her brother, David Elson (Julie); and sister, Sylvia Anspach (Larry) and their children.

It is said that “art is intelligence having fun” and that a little piece of the artist’s heart goes into each creation. Rachel’s intelligence and creativity, combined with her big heart, big smile and love for fun endeared her to friends and family alike. For those who have a piece of Rachel’s art, you have a piece of her heart and mind, which will continue to live on.

Her prayer would be that each piece gives you great joy.

Earl was known to family and friends as “Wimp”, not because of a timid or cowardly nature, but because as a child he so loved hamburgers that the family nicknamed him after Wimpy of the Popeye comics.

He was united in marriage on March 19, 1950, to Lois Jean Gardner. To this union two children were born, Bruce Kent and Allyson Claire. The young family made their home on a farm south of Earl’s parents until Lois Jean’s death in February 1957. Earl and the children lived for several months with his parents while Earl drove a livestock truck for the Lamoni Sale Barn. On November 28, 1958, he married Luella Mae Williams and the family moved into Davis City, Iowa.

In 1959, Earl began working for Michigan-Wisconsin Pipeline (later called American Natural Resources) in Lamoni as a truck driver. After the Lamoni station closed, he accepted a promotion to Field Superintendent of the Lineville, Iowa station, continuing in that position until his retirement in 1992. He loved his job with the pipeline and cherished the friendships formed there, which continued throughout the remainder of his life.

As a young adult, Earl enjoyed bowling and fishing. He loved playing any kind of cards, and was especially masterful at cribbage. He became an avid golfer and maintained a membership at the Lamoni Golf Course until his health no longer allowed him to play. He was an active member of the Davis City Masonic Lodge until it closed then transferred his membership to the Pleasanton Lodge until it closed as well, with a lifetime membership of over 50 years. He had a strong sense of civic duty and community pride, serving many terms on the Davis City Council.

Following a stroke in May of 2015, Earl moved into the Lamoni Specialty Care Facility where he stayed until his death.

He was preceded in death by his parents; wives, Lois Jean and Luella; brother, Dick Snethen; sister, Mary Virginia (Snethen) Sponsler; brothersin-law, Max Dunbar, Max Gardner, James Sponsler, Tom Gibson, Glenn Myrick, Hugh Allen Ward, and Darrell Dale; sistersin-law, Betty Hinds and Louva Dale.

EARL ARTHUR SNETHEN Earl Arthur Snethen, age 86, was born August 13, 1930, on a farm near Blythedale, Missouri in Harrison County and passed from this life May 14, 2017, at Lamoni Specialty Care, Lamoni, Iowa. He was the fourth of seven children born to Grant and Mary Ellen (Tennery) Snethen.

JANET (VAUGHN) WEST Janet I. West, age 71, entered into rest on May 11, 2017, in Manteca, California.

She was born in her hometown of Leon, Iowa on July 21, 1945. In Heaven she joins her parents, Raymond and Maxine Vaughn, and her brothers, Richard and Donald Vaughn. Ms. West is survived by her three daughters, Amy Daniels, Angela (Chris) Barnes and Ashley (Jeff) Durao-West. She was truly blessed by her seven grandchildren, Allison, Ashlynn, Taylor, Andrew, Alexis, Austin and Asher. In addition, Janet is survived by one brother, Eugene Vaughn.

Janet was a Manteca resident for over 45 years. She was employed by Doctors Hospital of Manteca (DHM) working in various departments over the course of 42 years. Janet loved advocating and mentoring her fellow employees with the union-SEIU as their Shop Steward. She loved her DHM family but was excited to announce her retirement in June.

Janet enjoyed antiquing, shopping local yard sales, making flower arrangements and gardening. With a vibrant smile on her face, Janet was always happy and willing to help others. She truly loved her family, friends and community. Traditions were very important to Janet as she always put out an extra special effort in making memories. She loved capturing pictures with her camera. Janet adored her seven grandchildren; she was extremely proud of their accomplishments as she was honored to witness just about every special occasion, award ceremonies, and sporting events. Janet will be remembered as an amazing mother and Mimi and a very special friend to many. She will be deeply missed.

Elections were held during the 119th Iowa Osteopathic Medical Association’s (IOMA) Annual Conference and Scientific Seminar held in Des Moines, Iowa on May 4-7, 2017. Dr. Joel Baker of Corydon was elected president of the Iowa Osteopathic Medical Association.

Joel Baker, D.O. is a graduate of Kirksville College of Osteopathic Medicine in Kirksville, Missouri. He completed his internship and residency at Des Moines General Hospital in Des Moines. He is board certified by the American Osteopathic Board of Family Physicians and the American Academy of Hospice and Palliative Care. Vertex Pharmaceuticals Incorporated (Nasdaq: VRTX) recently announced that Mindy Wilson from Leon, Iowa has been granted a $5,000 All in for CF Scholarship to support her attendance at Graceland University for the 2017-2018 academic year. Vertex awarded 40 scholarships totaling $200,000 to people living with cystic fibrosis (CF) and their immediate family members through the program, which is part of Vertex’s broad commitment to the CF community.

Vertex established the All in for CF Scholarship program to help people with CF and their immediate family members pursue two-year, four-year or graduate degrees. Wilson, 19, is the child of a person living with CF, and one of the first All in for CF Scholarship recipients. She is pursuing her Bachelor’s degree in elementary education.

Memorial Day Service at Garden Grove The Garden Grove Memorial Day service will be held at 1:00 p.m., Monday, May 29, 2017, at the Garden Grove Cemetery.

The Cowl-Scott American Legion Post #80 from Leon will provide the Military Honors. Father Felix Onuora will deliver the message.

Participants in the Garden Grove Cemetery service include Verda Jones, Sharon Day, Keegan Bethards, Kennedy Buckingham and Addie Parmer under the direction of Mr. Aaron Comer, Larry and Mary Richards.

Department members are serving a dinner from 11:00 a.m. to 2:00 p.m. at the Community Center. They will be serving chicken and noodles, mashed potatoes, corn, green beans, rolls and pie baked by Garden Grove ladies. The cost is a donation to the fire department.

TWICE TOLD TALES 20 YEARS AGO (May 21, 1997) “It Now Occurs To Me,” by Margaret Lindsey. “What we are matters more than what others say we are.”

The Leon Business and Professional Women’s Organization (BPW) members of Judy Smith, Margaret Lindsey, Eleanora Miller and Lorene Warden presented Chet Redman with a Decatur County afghan to be placed in the Historical Museum. The afghan featured the courthouse and places of historic interest from each community in Decatur County.

Jeremy O’Brien and Jamie Stanford, representing the CD boys track, and Katie Wengryn, CD girls track member, all advanced to the State Track Meet at Drake University.

O’Brien qualified for State by placing third in the 100 high hurdles in a time of 16.56.

Stanford qualified by placing first in the 1600 meter run with a time of 4:52. Wengryn finished the regular seson undefeated in the shot put, taking the gold with a put of 35’ 6”. Wengryn went in the State Tournament with the 12th best District Toss.

Joe Eaton, assistnat manger at Leon HyVee, was selected to take over as manager of the HyVee store in Grant City, MO. The Leon Police Department was investigating an incident of vandalism to the big letters spelling out “LEON” on the bank of the golf course at the west edge of Leon.

Matthew Deemer was the 1997 Central Decatur graduating senior awarded the Ham and Glendean Graves Memorial Scholarship, presented by Chet Redman.

The Decatur County Historical Museum planned to open its doors for the season the following Memorial Day weekend.

The museum was oepn to the public Tuesday and Friday afternoons from 1:00 - 5:00 p.m. and Saturdays from 10:00 a.m.

The following Decatur County men were inducted into the U.S. Army: Meredith Johnston, Max Hileman and Charles Pearcy. They reported to Fort Campbell, Kentucky, for basic training.

Hank Brown was the winner of the $100 Merchant Drawing for the week. He was shopping at Heller-Newman Hardware at the time of the drawing.

Winners of the Leon Country Club’s best ball tournament were Betty Hoffman and Kathy Lee and for the men Dick McKern and Doug Kouba.

Other men’s flight winners were Tom Viner and Gale McClure, Layton Baker and Rick McKern and “Cec” Moore and Virgil Cmelik.

New Leon Teen Club officers elected were: Jim Hamilton, president; Marcia Cunningham, vice-president; Nancy Parson, secretary and Sue Ann Hullinger, treasurer.

Mrs. Ethel Burrell, 5th and 6th grade teacher at Davis City, brought her students to Leon to tour O’Bryan Brothers and The Leon Journal-Reporter.

Susan Chastain, Central Decatur senior, placed fourth in the 220 yard dash at the State Track meet.

75 YEARS AGO (May 25, 1942) Cow Injured Decatur Man - George Williams, who lived one-half mile west of Decatur, suffered severe head injuries when a cow horned him.

Williams was alone when the accident occurred and it was nearly two and one-half hours later, before he was found by his wife and daughter. Stitches were required to close the head wounds.

Rain was accompanied by an electrical storm that brought damage in numerous places, Lightning near the Christian Church tore through a water connection in the basement and water flooded the floor. Electric light globes were also shattered by the bolt. J.P. Smith had an Aberdeen Angus cow killed and Lee McDaniel had an Angus bull killed by lightning.

Will Have Horseshoe Court - Rev. Clarence Moore and other horseshoe pitching enthusiasts have arranged to construct a court on the Biggs lots at the corner of Main and Tenth streets. As soon as the weather dried a bit, they built a regulation pitching ground.

The Rotary Club had the pleasure of hearing Morris Mortimore, local soil conservationist speak at the luncheon. It was an address on soils and their conservation as it applied to Decatur County.

Arvid Miller, county agent, followed Mr. Mortimore in a short discussion.

Mr. and Mrs. Emmett Leeper of Pleasanton were awakened by a long distance

call. It was their son, Willard, in Honolulu. He was well and expected to be home within the year.

Mr. and Mrs. Don Briley were the parents of a daughter.

J.E. Clampitt of near Davis City was in Leon.

Wayne Cowles of Pleasanton was in Leon.

Col. C.V. Webb of Corydon was in Leon on business.

Mr. and Mrs. Olin Rippey, and son, Robert, were visiting friends in Des Moines.

Don Akes, who resided southeast of town, was in Leon.

100 YEARS AGO (May 24, 1917) Piano Truck Burned - One of W.A. Alexander’s piano trucks was destroyed by fire near the home of Martin Burrell, northeast of Davis City. J.W. Jacobs was driving the truck, being accompanied by J.H. Newman, one of Alexander’s salesmen. They had a piano and organ on the truck and while driving along the road, discovered the truck was on fire. They removed the piano and organ before they were burned.

A ruling was made by the federal authorities that it was unlawful to offer for sale handkerchiefs, hats or other articles of clothing or merchandise with an American flag printed or woven in the goods or on the article, the ruling being that it commercialized the flag.

Kicked by a Horse-Joe Brady, who was employed at the Brady Lumber Co., was severely injured by being kicked by a horse. Joe was loading shingles in a wagon for L.L. Gammon, of Eden Township, and as he passed the team one of the horses kicked him, its hoof striking him in the stomach and knocking him ten or fifteen feet.

The names of the volunteers from Iowa selected to go to the officers training camp at Ft. Snelling, Minn., were made public and in the list appeared the names of four Decatur County boys, Fred Hoffman, H.N. and David Dancer and C.J. Judson.

Tom Snethen gave a wonderful eulogy of Earl “Wimpy” Snethen’s life Friday, May 19th. Earl had developed many friends throughout his life not only through his work on the pipeline but just through life. It was a wonderful celebration of Earl.

Funeral services for Sarah Ballantyne were held on Tuesday, May 16th. The service included a reading called “Welcome to Holland” that was a testament to the expectations and realities of life. It was a lovely celebration of a life well lived.

Very sad to report a tragedy occurred in Lamoni last week that resulted in the death of teenager Logan Gilliland. Please keep his family and friends in your prayers.

Liz Carpenter and Julie McElroy spent some time Thursday night popping popcorn and baking cookies to sell for the Optimist Club at the Civil War Days reenactment on Saturday.

Ina Lou Myrick, Tessie Owens, and Joy Rathbun stayed overnight at Margaret “Teeny” Gibson’s home Thursday evening.

Tom Snethen, Margaret Gibson, and Philinda Snethen had a wonderful visit with Lois McQuerry last week. Lois is a sister to Verda that started the Dinner Bell. Their maiden names were Snethen.

Cassie Daleske and Holly Parkhurst helped Andrew Lane and Dylan Parkhurst celebrate their birthdays on Sunday evening. Their ages?

Dylan’s birthday is Tuesday and his age is the third prime squared. Andrew’s birthday is on Wednesday and his age is the tenth prime number. Here’s a hint for you. They are both under thirty, but just barely for Andrew and they are four years apart.

Very happy to say there are new neighbors in the Andover neighborhood. Dylan and Holly Parkhurst have moved next door (to the east) of Andrew Lane and Cassie Daleske. Welcome to the neighborhood!! Andrew and Cassie will add another neighbor to the neighborhood in about twelve weeks!

Ruthie Snethen Welch, Margaret Gibson, and Philinda Snethen ventured over to Corydon on Wednesday for a visit with Fay Andrew. They stopped for lunch before coming home.

Jaime Reyes, grandson of Jackie Snethen took Samuel Bradley, Margaret Gibson, Philinda Snethen, and Tom and Cher Snethen, our for lunch on Sunday afternoon. Thank you, Jaime!

Gary and Sandy Osborn visited Howard and Ruby Osborn on Sunday evening.

Philinda Snethen was out and about and took a picture of the old homestead of Bob Hutton. She also got a history lesson on the house and found out that the foundation was walnut and a man from Kentucky came to build it.

Thank you, Bob Hutton for the information. Philinda loves this kind of history.

Liz Carpenter enjoyed an afternoon visit with Paula Hutton on Sunday afternoon.

He is in wonderful spirits and is doing well with his physical therapy.

HISTORY Bob Wickham Family Betty Hall married Robert Wickham, whose parents, Harry and Grace Wickham, operated a restaurant in Weldon from 1934 until 1936 when Harry Wickham died. Bob and Betty graduated from Weldon High School in 1938 and 1939 and were married in August 1941, in Weldon. Their 1st son, Bill, was born in July 1942. The family was separated most of the next three years because of WWII. Their daughters Barbara, Becky and Beth were born in 1945, 1947 and 1950. A son Bob Jr., was born in 1956 and a daughter Belinda in 1959. All the children are married and Betty and Bob are the grandparents of twelve grandchildren.

Bob Sr. had been the rural mail carrier from Weldon Post Office since 1994. Betty and Bob Wickham are both deceased.

The only son of Ruth and George Hall, George William (Bill) is manager of the Cargill Elevator in Sloan, Iowa, near Sioux City. He and Pat Blohm Hall (daughter of Carl and Wilma Blohm), have two sons, Bill Jr. and Steven.

George Hall died in 1965 and Ruth died in 1973.

Their son Bill Wickham went to school with Charles Pearcy at Weldon School. On one occasion they had a Weldon alumni with Linda Ellis Newell.

Bill didn’t get to come this year.

All the Wickham kids are out of the state except Belinda.

She’s in Osceola.

LOCAL NEWS Rev. Max Carmichael’s birthday is May 29. Waneta (Leland) Lewis’ birthday was May 20. Her kids are having a party for her at the community center in Osceola. Her children are Randy (1951), Ron (1953), Rorann (1960) and Robbie (1964). Waneta was a mail carrier in star route.

Leland, Waneta’s husband, is deceased. Waneta is happy and goes out to eat with her good friend Ela Downy. Connie Hook and many others play Bingo in Osceola and always help Weldon Christian Church when ever needed.

A service will be held on May 25 for Charles Pearcy at the Green Bay Cemetery in Weldon.

Charles is missed. Max Carmichael and Charles were very close and played pool together and went to Branson together. Devra had to put up with them. Max changed Charles’ life these past 10 years.

A least Charles is at peace now. Al Goben dedicated a song, Old County Church, for Charlie Pearcy. Ken Tennet spent time with Charles when Charles’ nephew Jimmy died in 2000. I’m glad Ken was their for Charles.

Although DCH is also one of the largest employers in the county and is committed to regional economic development, a hospital is far more than an ordinary business.

When people are hurting and need compassion, it’s the local hospital they turn to. In times of emergency, it’s the local hospital that stands tall with a mission of service and caring. Few other businesses are open 24 hours a day, seven days a week, prepared to serve our citizens with dignity and excellence. DCH simply defines who we are as a county and as a community.

Toward that end, we are renewing our commitment to collaborate with other local healthcare providers wherever we can to improve the health status of Decatur County. Our goal is to create partnerships with public health, the Community Health Center, local pharmacies, mental health services, law enforcement, the school system and any other entities we can work with to address important regional healthcare concerns. Working together, I’m confident we can make Decatur County a statewide model of what a rural healthcare system can become.

by Rodger Gatton In our busy world, it seems we use more and more abbreviated words or phrases when communicating with one another. Some common examples are ATM, TLC, M*A*S*H, and IQ. You know what all those letters stand for; right? In today’s column I’d like to quiz you about others you might encounter, either in some form of media, or in daily conversations and communications.

First, let’s discuss a couple of subgroups. If a new word is formed, using the initial letters of each word in a phrase, and if you can somehow, even clumsily, pronounce the newlyformed word, it is called an “acronym”. NATO, NASA, and LASER are examples. Do you know the phrases from which these came? At times, even if it can’t be pronounced, some may call it an acronym anyway. More technically, if unpronounceable, it would be called an “initialism”.

Generally, when you say it, if it can’t be pronounced, you just recite the letters. Examples would be FBI, CPR, and ESP. Do you know these?

Enough practicing. Now for the real quiz. I’d like “Governmental Agencies” for $200, Alex. Can you expand these abbreviations: CIA, EPA, USDA, FDA, FAA, FCC, IRS, and USPS? From the business and financial world, how many of these can you translate? IRA, FDIC, LLC, CEO, CFO. If you use a computer, you are likely to encounter some of these. Do you know them all?

URL, HTTP, WWW and, perhaps in your on-line conversations LOL, TTYL, BFF, FYI, and NIMBY. When discussing lighting, or displays that emit light, you might encounter these: CFL, LED, LCD. In the world of TV (that’s an abbreviation itself), if you’re watching crime shows, you likely have seen some of these: PI, JAG, CSI, AKA, APB. If you’re watching a variety show, the host may be called an MC. A radio show or special live

event may have a DJ, who plays the music.

The various channels have their own abbreviations, sometimes referred to as their “call letters”, but do you know what those letters stand for?

The three historic networks are NBC, CBS, and ABC. Other, somewhat newer ones include CNN, TBS, HBO. You may also watch movies using your VCR or DVR. Do you know what those letters stand for?

From the educational and medical fields, how many of these can you identify? GPA, GED, BA, MS, PhD, MD, DDS, RN, LPN, EMT. Organizations you (or maybe a friend) might have joined when you were younger, or even now, include: BSA, GSA, FBLA, FFA, AAA, NRA, AARP. When I served my short term on the hospital board, I soon found that many things were abbreviated, or made into acronyms. It was difficult keeping up with it all, as hospital employees used them in conversation just as if they were common ordinary household words. I believe at some point I was given a small dictionary that translated all those acronyms into plain English. Here are a couple of local abbreviations you might want to remember: CHCSI, DCH, and a couple of other health-related ones: HSA, HIPAA. When you were young, did you collect money for UNICEF? Did you have a collection of LPs or, if you aren’t that old, maybe CDs? In more recent times, have you experienced VR, or heard about AI? Finally, here are a variety of acronyms or initialisms for you to try and figure out: ASAP, PDQ, ASPCA, IOU (doesn’t quite fit the mold, but almost), UPS, POTUS, VP, SIRWA, SIRHA, GERD, ALS, OPEC, CST. Answers in my next column.

Cardinals Have Success at State Track Meet Shuttle Hurdle Claims Title of Fastest in Class 2A

It had to be the shoes.

Junior Tyler Davis, running in a borrowed pair of spikes, helped his teammates grab a state title in the 2A Shuttle Hurdle event Saturday at the State Track Meet held at Drake University.

In the midst of less than ideal conditions of rain and cool temps, Davis, Cole Pedersen, Cauy Spidle and Carter Boothe clocked an outstanding sub-minute race at 59.22 to lead the 8-team field to a first-timein-CD school-history Shuttle Hurdle team title at the state meet. They also beat their own school record with this time.

This was also the first time since 1971 that a state title had been won by Central Decatur. The Mile Medley squad that consisted of Charlie Decker, Randy Heintz, Mark Wooderson, and Kurt Heintz placed 1st that year. Prior to this, it was in 1958 that saw a state title

by Leon High School. Bob Kentner earned 1st in the high jump when he cleared the bar at 5 feet 10 inches.

The team entered the finals after winning their heat on Thursday with a time of 1:00.52 which equated to the third fastest time coming into Saturday.

As wet track conditions persisted Saturday at 12:15 p.m., the Cardinals were set to race in the second heat.

They watched the winner of the first heat clock a 1:00.66, so they knew they had to be on point during their race.

Running in lanes 1 and 2, Davis came out of the blocks to start the race and faced some tight competition during his portion of the event. As the number two runner, freshman Pedersen battled back to run neck and neck with the leader, followed by sophomore Spidle maintaining a slight edge to tag anchor Boothe who put together one of his best finishes to date.

step down the stretch with a Cherokee runner and made a great lean at the line to clench the Cardinal’s title of the fastest shuttle hurdlers in Class 2A. They edged out the Cherokee squad by a mere nine hundredths of a second – a truly photo finish.

The Cardinals faced cloudy and drizzly conditions Friday, as well.

Not only does Spidle have speed going over the hurdles, he can get vertical, too. He took his leaping ability up a notch, as he finished 8th in the high jump event on Friday afternoon.

Cauy, who has tied the school high jump record at 6 feet 4 inches early this season, had no problem with the opening height of 5 feet 10 inches at State.

As the bar moved to 6 feet on the next round, Cauy cleared it on his second attempt to keep his hopes alive. At 6 feet 2 inches, he struggled somewhat, finally getting over on his third attempt which put him among 8 jumpers left of the 24 team field to attempt 6 feet 4 inches.

Unfortunately, after three valiant attempts, he bowed out of the competition, earning 8th place.

Following this event, it was time for the CD girls to make their mark.

At 3:40 p.m., Emma Atwood competed in the 100 hurdles where she finished 5th in her heat with a time of 16.38. This was not quick enough to earn her a trip to the finals on Saturday. She finished 16th overall.

No matter, she made her mark in the high jump event, where she joined teammate senior Raegan Boothe.

Atwood breezed through the first three heights, clearing the bar on the first attempt each time – 4 feet 10 inches, 5 feet, and 5 feet 2 inches – to put her in a group of 7 girls that remained out of the 24-team field.

Atwood struggled at this height failing to make it over.

Since she didn’t miss on each height up to this point, she earned 3rd place.

As for teammate Boothe, the going was a little tougher.

She easily made the opening height, but just could not make it over the horizontal bar at 5 feet. She finished in a 5-way tie for 14th.

Boothe finished her senior season, while Atwood, and the shuttle hurdle squad, will make a run at state next season.

Simons Narrowly Misses State by 4 Strokes, Completes Fine Season

by Coach Gary Hayworth Lily Simon, a senior on the Central Decatur Lady Cards golf team, advanced to the second round of regional play. Lily finished second as an individual out of a field of 40 players to move on to the second round with a score of 89 at the Woodward Country Club on Monday, May 15.

Lily played in the second round of regionals at Lakeview Country Club in Winterset on Monday, May 22. She carded a 18-hole score of 99, just missing out on a chance at State by only 4 strokes.

The Lady Cards team finished 6th out of the seventeam field at the first round of regionals. The other scores were Kristin Schaff 100, Brooke Vecchio 123, Alyssa Rhum 147, and Maggie Frank 211.

Relay for Life for South Central Iowa

Until this year, the Relay for Life for South Central Iowa event has just been Clarke County Relay for Life, but with some re-structuring, the event for this area in addition to Clarke County now includes Decatur County and Chariton for the Relay for Life for South Central Iowa.

The event is scheduled for Saturday, June 10, to be held at the Clarke High School track in Osceola, Iowa. Set-up begins at 3:00 p.m. with an opening ceremony to begin at 4:00 p.m.

The event will last until 10:00 p.m.

During the event there is special recognition for any survivors. The theme this year is super hero and will include activities for kids and adults to participate in throughout the evening, a silent auction, theme laps, food, DJ and lots of continuous fun.

The American Cancer Society’s mission is to save lives, celebrate lives and lead the fight for a world without cancer.

All of the proceeds from the different parts of this event go directly to the American Cancer Society. Overall, in 2015, 75% of Society resources went to cancer research, patient support, prevention information and education, and detection and treatment. The remaining 25% of resources were spent on management and general expenses and fundraising expenses.

Also, congrats to senior golfer Lily Simon who narrowly missed advancing to State by a mere four strokes.

On to baseball and softball. oOo I want to thank, at this time, Guy Clark and Charlie and Linda Decker for the time they put in in helping me track down some information about the 1971 track team that placed first that year. Guy, by the shear light of his phone, dug through years of dust where the old trophies are stored, not to mention staying up to the wee hours in the morning paging through the State’s website looking for information. Charlie, who was a member of the 1971 Mile Medley squad who placed first at state, and his wife Linda for parusing through old annuals to help clarify a few things. It was a team effort and I thank you all for the help. oOo Well, Mary was among her 59 classmates who walked across the stage Sunday afternoon to receive her diploma. The gym was filled with anticipating, tears of joy and tears of sadness.

Now that graduation is over I challenge all the students to keep reaching high for their goals and to never give up. With that I ran across a simple little saying (author unknown) Graduation is a time for reflection on the labors of the past, the accomplishments of the present and the possibilities of the future. oOo This coming Monday we honor all the service men and women who have fought and continue to fight so that we may live in this land of the free and home of the brave. (Still a schoolteacher at heart.) ********** As did many of my readers, last week I watched as the old Stewart Funeral Home was razed. I was not as affected by this loss as I was with the Presbyterian and Christian churches. I took not a single photo of the various stages of destruction. Did I feel anything? Of course! I hate to see any historical Leon building bite the dust, no matter its current condition. As my sister, some of my facebook friends, and former Leon residents have stated, “There’s not much left of what we grew up with”. Besides two of the largest churches, the South School is gone, as is the North School, almost half the buildings that used to surround the courthouse square, the jail, the swimming pool, two hospitals, several gas stations, and all but one of the buildings that once housed car dealerships. The places where my grandparents used to sell their eggs and cream, store their frozen meat, and buy their groceries are no more. There’s no soda fountain, no telephone booths, no people to watch go by, on Leon sidewalks on Saturday nights. There’s no Hanoco to drive out to, for a couple of bucks worth of gas, or maybe just turn around and go back to town. We are down to one lumberyard, no dime store, no men’s clothing store nor shoe store. We have no jewelry

store, no Penney’s, no Sears.

So why didn’t I feel more sadness when we lost the funeral home? Last fall, a friend and I rested on the front steps of that old house, eating the ice cream that we’d bought across the street. I mentioned that I’d sure like to see the inside of the house, and when I tried the door to the front porch I found it unlocked, which seemed to me like an invitation for a self-guided tour. After a half hour or so of checking it out, I would say my main emotion was disappointment. Somehow I expected it to be “grander”.

While it seemed to be a very solid house, in good shape on the outside, I saw few features on the inside that really excited me. There were no leaded or stained glass windows, no fancy woodwork, no beautiful chandeliers. I guess the best features were the half-circle windows in the attic, the staircase, and the fireplace.

I mentioned my disappointment in a facebook post, and right away there were some who responded that it was a very special place for them. They were ones who grew up in the house, or had some other personal connection. Of course, it was special to them.

It wouldn’t have mattered if it were an old shack. It would have been special because there were special memories there, and I totally understand sentimental reasons. We will miss it anyhow, even though it may not have been the most architecturally beautiful house in town.

CENTRAL DECATUR COMMUNITY SCHOOL

The Central Decatur Community School Board of Education met in regular session in the High School Library on Tuesday, May 16, 2017.

Board members present: Igor Takacs, Ray Bishop, Amber Swartz, and Shaun Schaff.

Board members absent: Mike Stuck Others in attendance were: Rudy Evertsen, Amy Whittington, Chris Coffelt, Becky Broich, and seven guests.

Board President Takacs called the meeting to order at 6:02 p.m. The public hearing for the proposed 2016-17 budget amendment was held with no public comment given.

CONSENSUS ITEMS AND REPORTS: The following consent items were approved: • The agenda for May 16, 2017.

• Minutes of the previous meeting on April 17th.

• Financial reports for General, Management, Physical Plant and Equipment Levy, Capital Projects, Debt Service, Activity reports, Scholarship reports, All-Weather Track, Lunch reports, and summary list of bills: General Fund $ 93,726.68 Activity Fund $ 26,779.86 PPEL Fund $1,679.00 Lunch Fund $26,945.55 Capital Projects $216,565.91 Bond & Int Fund $582,861.25 Motion by Bishop, second by Swartz. All motions carried unanimously.

DISTRICT REPORTS: • Principal Whittington’s report included staff professional development and student activities. Student activity highlights included: walking school bus, sixth grade science fair, fourth & fifth graders attending Decatur County Ag Day, spring concerts, community engagement events such as Muffins w/Mom, and field trips. Sixth graders participated in the World Wide Flame

Challenge with Alan Alda, providing feedback to real scientists and interacted with students around the world.

• Principal Evertsen’s report highlighted recent student accomplishments and upcoming activities. Raegan Boothe was recognized at the annual Iowa Governor’s Scholar Ceremony.

Keegan Bethards was selected the winner of the Tractor Supply Company “Great Neighbor” essay contest. Several athletes qualified for State Track.

Principal Evertsen also shared the Class of 2017 post-graduation plans.

• Tricia Applegate, Julie Pedersen, Anne Winslow-Cook, and Mindi Woodson talked about TAP: The System for Teacher and Student Advancement.

The TAP National Conference and Summer Institute have provided a deeper understanding of their role as teacher leaders and create learning, collaborating, and networking opportunities with other individuals all over the country.

Cluster is a weekly meeting where teachers can share instructional strategies and collaborate to become more effective teachers to increase student achievement. Student data has shown an increase in student achievement due to this program.

ACTION ITEMS: • The board approved amending the 2016-17 budget to increase estimated expenditures in the areas of total support services by $389,000, non-instructional programs by $25,000, and total other expenditures by $2,100,000. The majority of the increases are due to the timing of the track/field and new bus barn payments and expensing the bus lease purchase.

• The board awarded the auditor bid to Nolte, Cornman, and Johnson, P.C. for the next three years ending FY20. Motion by Schaff, second by Bishop. Motion carried unanimously.

• The board approved the summer Cross Country trip in Missouri and

TSA National Conference in Orlando, Florida. Motion by Swartz, second by Schaff. Motion carried unanimously.

• The board approved the Intergovernmental Contract for School-Based Supervision Program for the next three years through FY20. This contract employs Juvenile Court Liaison Officer, Brian Carson, through Juvenile Court Services, 5th Judicial District of Iowa; Iowa DHS; Central Decatur CSD; and Mormon Trail CSD. Motion by Bishop, second by Swartz. Motion carried unanimously.

• The board approved the following lane change for 2017-18, pending final confirmation of approved credits: Melissa Linhart from BA+12 to MA. Motion by Bishop, second by Schaff.

Motion carried unanimously.

• The board approved the hiring of Sydney Cruz as MS Social Studies Teacher and continuing Gene Olsen’s contract for 2017-18. Motion by Schaff, second by Bishop. Motion carried unanimously. o The board approved the master teacher contracts for 2017-18: Tricia Applegate, Joni Readout, Laci Erke, and Mindi Woodson. Motion by Bishop, second by Swartz. Motion carried unanimously. o The board approved the hire of Wade Hamilton as Head JH Football Coach and the following resignations with appreciation of service: Emily Layton, Speech Sponsor; Vince Gutierrez, Custodian; Katie Hewlett, Para; Shynell Owen, Drama Sponsor; and Gary Hayworth, Head Golf and Assistant JH Boy’s Basketball Coach. Motion by Schaff, second by Swartz. Motion carried unanimously.

• The board approved the open enrollment application for Hattie Rash, from Mormon Trail CSD, to attend CD beginning the 2017-18 school year.

Motion carried unanimously.

• The board approved the second reading of the 900 series of board policy. (Community Relations). Motion by Schaff, second by Swartz. Motion carried unanimously.

• The board tabled the first reading of the 100 series of board policy until the June meeting. (Educational Philosophy).

INFORMATION ITEMS: • Superintendent Coffelt shared the update for the new Bus Barn. The contracts substantial completion date are April 24, 2017. Substantial completion indicates the work is sufficiently complete in accordance with the contract documents so the owner may occupy the building.

DECATUR COUNTY BOARD OF SUPERVISORS

May 15, 2017 The Decatur County Board of Supervisors met in regular session on May 15, 2017, at 8:00 a.m. Present: Dan Christensen, Robert G. Bell and Jim Fulton. Also present was Stephanie Daughton, County Auditor. Unless otherwise noted, all motions carried unanimously.

Motion Bell/Christensen to approve the agenda. Motion carried.

Motion Bell/Christensen to approve the minutes of the May 8, 2017, regular session. Motion carried.

Motion Bell/Christensen to approve the cigarette/tobacco license for Country Corner Shell. Motion carried.

Motion Christensen/Bell to adopt the Decatur County Voting System Security Policy. Motion carried.

At 9:00 a.m., the Board met with County Engineer Dan Doerfler to discuss departmental matters.

The Board adjourned from 10:00 a.m. until 10:45 a.m. in order to attend the health insurance open enrollment meeting.

Renae Johanningmeier met with the Board to discuss three options for COBRA administration services. First, UHC could serve as administrator at no cost, but the notices issued by UHC do not pick up the partial self-funded piece of the county’s insurance and, as a result, are inaccurate. Second, IPEP could serve as administrator, and their notices would include the partial selffunded piece, but at a monthly cost of $1.25 per active county employee.

Third, the county could provide this service in-house. Motion Bell/Christensen that the county provide this service in-house. Motion carried.

CITY OF GRAND RIVER

Regular Council Meeting May 11, 2017 The regular city council meeting was called to order by Mayor Craig Stogdill at 7:00 p.m.

Roll call was taken. Council members present were: Mike Adkisson, Sandy White, Mary Joyce Hewlett, Camron Collier and Bob Davis.

Collier made a motion to approve the agenda, Davis 2nd, all ayes, motion carried.

Mayor Stogdill declared the public hearing for the selling of city property open.

There being no verbal or written comment, the 2 sealed bids received were opened.

The first being Nevin Collier for $1000.00 and the second from Linda Hunt for $600.00 There was discussion about the bids by the council.

Hewlett made a motion to close the public hearing, Adkisson 2nd, all ayes, motion carried. The public hearing closed at 7:03 p.m.

White made a motion to accept the bid from Nevin Collier for $1000.00 for the city property located at 312 E. 2nd Street in Grand River, Hewlett 2nd, all ayes, and motion carried.

Collier made a motion to approve Resolution 2017-8, authorizing the sale of certain city property, Davis 2nd, all ayes, motion carried.

White made a motion to approve the April financial report, Hewlett 2nd, all ayes, motion carried.

White made a motion to approve the bank reconciliation for April, Hewlett 2nd, all ayes, motion carried.

White made a motion to approve the consent agenda, Hewlett 2nd, all ayes, and motion carried.

In new business, the council discussed the city cameras. Adkisson made a motion to have Mr. Taylor from SCC look at the cameras, Davis 2nd, all ayes, motion carried.

Hewlett made a motion to initiate Iowa Code 657A.10A PETITION

BY CITY FOR TITLE TO ABANDONED PROPERTY, property being located at 105 Adams Street in the City of Grand River. Adkisson 2nd, all ayes, motion carried.

The parks were discussed possibly having someone spray for broadleaf.

The clerk had obtained one estimate, but at the direction of the council will obtain three more estimates for the June meeting.

The streets were discussed and Adkisson made a motion to contact the county to have the streets scarified and graveled, Hewlett 2nd, all ayes, motion carried.

A culvert on Broadway needs replaced and the clerk was instructed to obtain three estimates for the June council meeting.

Davis expressed a need to replace the gas barrel the city just disposed of due to running out of gas in the small engines at fires. After discussion the clerk will check with the insurance concerning safety cans and a box for the cans.

The clerk reported the State of Iowa auditors had been in the office for 3 days. The exit report is confidential and could not be discussed.

The final report will be released in the fall. There is a need for a purchasing policy, bid policy, and investment policy. The council unanimously decided for the purchasing policy to be written for $250.00 and the bid policy for $250.00. The policies will be written for council final approval at the June council meeting. There was discussion concerning the debit cards held by the city. The city needs to obtain a credit card and dispose of the debit cards. White made a motion for the city to get credit cards for use by the mayor, clerk, and fire chief, and the debit cards be destroyed,Collier 2nd, all ayes, motion carried.

Davis made a motion to adjourn the meeting, Collier 2nd, all ayes, motion carried.

NOTICE: A CRIMINAL CHARGE IS MERELY AN ACCUSATION AND THE DEFENDANT IS PRESUMED INNOCENT UNTIL AND UNLESS PROVEN GUILTY.

5/12: The SO, EMS and Rescue and Lamoni PD responded to a report of a vehicle in the ditch at the 1 mile-marker on I-35. No injuries were reported.

The SO responded to a complaint of ATV’s driving around Decatur.

Leon PD responded to a complaint of an ATV on South Main St. The SO responded to a disturbance at a residence in Van Wert.

5/13: The Webster County SO arrested Farin Hoare, 39, of Lehigh on an outstanding District Court warrant for failure to appear. Hoare was transported back to Decatur County booked into jail and held.

Lamoni PD responded to a driving complaint on North Silver St. 5/14: Leon PD responded to a noise complaint in the 100 block of NE 13th St. Lamoni PD responded to a criminal mischief complaint in the 200 block of South Mulberry St. Lamoni PD responded to a report of vehicles being broken into on West 4th St. The SO and Leon PD responded to a domestic dispute at a residence in Davis City. The SO arrested Robert Reed, 43, of Davis City on a charge of domestic abuse assault. Reed was booked into jail and held.

Van Wert FD and Weldon FD and the SO responded to a report of a truck on fire at Highway 69 and Popcorn Road.

The SO responded to a domestic dispute in Franklin Township.

5/15: Leon PD was notified of a possible violation of a no contact order.

5/16: The SO responded to a domestic dispute in Garden Grove.

Van Wert FD, Weldon FD and Osceola FD, State Patrol and SO responded to a semitrailer on fire at the 24 milemarker on I-35.

One fatality was reported, two injuries were reported. The State Patrol is investigating the accident.

5/18: Aaron Johnson was booked into jail and held on an outstanding Leon PD warrant for 2nd degree theft.

The SO responded to a report of a suspicious vehicle in Center Township.

5/19: Leon PD responded to a neighbor dispute in Long Creek Township.

Leon PD responded to a report of a disturbance on North Main St. Leon PD arrested Dustin Black, 27, of Leon on charges of disorderly conduct and interference with official acts. Black was booked into jail and held.

Rotary Club of Decatur County “GOES GLOBAL”

Decatur County Rotary Club President Peg Geiger presents Corey Lindsey, President of the Decatur County Historical Society, a plaque designating the club’s financial support to the recent renovation project at the museum which included new flooring. Approximately 3000 Chilean school children K-8 will now be learning science in a totally new hands-on way in their public schools.

With the aid of LOCKER SCIENCE LABS, teachers will for many years be able to instruct students with a variety of experiments that bring reality to mere textbook teaching.

Peggy Geiger had a major goal of writing a Global Grant during her presidential year at the helm of the Rotary Club of Decatur County.

Other committee members were PDG Terry Geiger and AG Linda Chastain assisting with the process. This grant falls under Rotary’s main area of focus of ‘Literacy’.

During Past District Governor Terry Geiger’s governor year 2012-13, Rotary programs such as Youth Exchange which brought Alberto Reyes Cosmelli of Santiago, Chile to CD High School and Group Study Exchange where Linda Chastain lead a young professional group to Chile in the Spring of 2013, developed many Rotary friendships and partnerships

between the two Districts. With these existing relationships in the Santiago, Chile area and with PDG Terry and Peggy being able to meet with these Santiago, Chile Rotary friends at the Rotary International Convention in San Paulo, Brazil last June 2016, the Global Grant process to raise approximately $43,000 was on its way!

Roberto Silva, in Chilean District 4340 and Peggy Geiger from the Iowa Rotary District 6000 worked diligently to raise money from Rotary Clubs in their respective districts. Other Rotary clubs partnering with Decatur County in District 6000 are the Chariton, Carroll, Osceola, and Winterset clubs.

Matching grants from The Rotary Foundation and the two Districts made this funding possible.

The Rotary Club of Decatur County constantly works to improve quality of life locally, nationally and worldwide.

DCH Approves Planning Phase Expenditures of Proposed Clinic The Decatur County Hospital Board of Trustees met April 26, 2017, at 5:30 P.M. Members present were Linda Chastain, Travis Miller, Rudy Evertsen, Cayle Buckingham, Amy Sherman, Sheri Frost, and Guy Clark .

Others present were: Mike Johnston, Tara Spidle, Jo Beth Smith, Mike Trachta, Heather Akers, Andi Masters, Kate Emerson, Samantha Cannon.

Linda Chastain called the meeting to order at 6:15 p.m.

The agenda was approved in accordance with the Code of Iowa Open Meetings Law. Guy Clark received comments from two people who were very pleased with the care they received at DCH. Non-operating revenue was $71,646. Net income for the month was $26,444. Year to date net gain was $644,056.

Help Save the Museum

Members of the Decatur County Rotary Club and The South Central Iowa Community Foundation met in celebration for the completion of floor replacement at the Decatur County Museum on May 15.

The museum is located on Main Street in Leon. The

new floor will provide a good foundation for unique displays depicting county development.

Plan, direct and coordinate the work of the organization; establish procedures and policies within the general policy established by the City Council; make recommendations on plans, policies and projects to the Council.

2. Administer and coordinate the development and execution of the capital improvement projects budget; participate in the development of master plans for organizing and financing capital improvement projects.

3. Advise the City Council and citizens on various utility projects and programs.

4. Coordinate work with other city departments as well as other utility interests.

5. Prepare and present a recommended budget to the City Council.

Qualifications: A college degree in engineering, business or related course of study and strong managerial and interpersonal skills is preferred. A minimum of eight (8) years of responsible supervisory/managerial experience with a public utility or closely related organization is highly desired.

Experience: Knowledge of materials, methods, and practices required in municipal public utility construction, maintenance, and operations. Knowledge of construction contract administration and knowledge of local, state, and federal laws and regulations pertaining to public utility operations is essential.

Saluting the Beef Producers of Decatur County - May is Beef Month

Justin Mendenhall, a Seventh Generation Mendenhall Farmer

By Keegan Bethards Justin Mendenhall, a seventh generation Mendenhall farmer.

Let’s learn just a little about Mr. Mendenhall...

He is the son of Sam and Jane Mendenhall, of Garden Grove, and the big brother to Miss Hanna Mendenhall.

Justin also resides in Garden Grove, with his fiance, Alexa Anderson. The couple plans to wed later in June.

Mendenhall was a Central Decatur 2011 graduate and headed to Ames, Iowa for the next few years of his life.

At Iowa State, he majored in Agricultural Studies and Animal Science.

“I would say my love for agriculture came from my family. Ag has been in both sides of my family for a long time. On the Mendenhall side, I know I am the 7th generation [farmer] and the farm has been in the family for over 160 years.

We have added land to the farm over the past 160 years, but most of the original Mendenhall land is still owned by my dad,” commented Mendenhall.

The family roots run deep, as one can see. The family ties are what influenced Justin to make his way back to Decatur County to settle down.

“I chose to settle here

because we farm here and my family is originally from here [dating back] 160 years ago,” shared Mendenhall.

It takes more than just one person to keep a successful multi-generational, acre, livestock farm operation running. This particular farming management team has four men at the reins. This family farming affair includes Justin’s Uncle Mark Mendenhall and his son, Zach Mendenhall (Justin’s cousin) along with Justin’s dad, Sam Mendenhall.

“We farm close to 2,500 acres between all of us, plus several hundred acres of hay and pasture ground. Dad and I run 200 cows split between winter calving and spring calving. Mark and Zach have their own separate cows from ours. When they need help, dad and I help them out and when we need help, they help us out,” stated Mendenhall.

In addition, he helps run the two family hog barns, which hold 2,500 pigs each.

Twenty years ago, The Leon Journal-Reporter featured the Mendenhall clan and their operation for May’s Beef Month article. And as we all know, things change...and the cattle (continued on page 14)

The Iowa Beef Industry Council is pleased to announce that May is Beef Month in Iowa. Governor Terry Branstad has signed the May Beef Month proclamation in recognition of the importance of Iowa's beef industry to the state's economy. The Iowa Beef Industry Council is pleased to present the following proclamation.

Whereas Iowa is a major beef producing state with nearly 3.85 million head of cattle on January 1, 2017; and Whereas the beef industry contributes greatly to our economy by generating in excess of $6.9 billion annually, and creating jobs for nearly 40,000 Iowans; and Whereas today's beef is a naturally nutrient-rich food providing protein, iron, zinc and B-vitamins with more than 30 beef cuts that meet the government's definition for "lean"; and Whereas beef producers are the original environmentalists working to conserve the soil and making optimum use of natural resources; and Whereas Iowa is a leader in the export of value-added agriculture products, shipping high-quality Iowa beef to other countries around the world; and Whereas there is an ever-increasing need for better understanding of the benefits that the beef industry provides to all Iowans; Now therefore, I, Terry Branstad, Governor of the State of Iowa, do hereby proclaim the month of May 2017 as Beef Month in Iowa, and urge all citizens to appreciate the contributions the beef industry continues to provide to our state.

The livestock industry is a very important component of the economy of Decatur County. Cattle feeding is especially valuable as a value-added industry that promotes feed grain production of the region.

The total number of cattle marketed in Decatur County is approximately 60,617 animals. Of these, 9,453 cattle are on feed, 38,814 cattle and calves sold, and 12,350 cattle are sold for slaughter. These production numbers represent about 1.5 percent of Iowa’s total number of cattle marketed.

There are a total of of 711 farms in the county totallying 231,504 farmland acres.

The average size of a farm in the county is 326 acres.

Of all of the 4,298 jobs in the county, 11.5% are in livestock production. Of that total, 25.3% are employed in Decatur County agriculture (and ag related industries).

Agricutlure in the county contributes to 1,088 jobs, generates $39,5 million in wages, and equates to $151.1 million in total sales.

Q: Can I enjoy beef regularly as part of a healthy, balanced diet?

A: Absolutely! A 3-ounce serving of beef – about the size

“What have we seen for a change? Just in the last 20 years, a very unsteady [fluctuation] in the cattle market. Twenty years ago, the cattle market never went straight up for two weeks then fall out of bed just like that! Usually, there is a moderate change in the markets, but even in the last five years I know I have never seen anything like it and I know my dad and uncle haven’t seen anything like it.”

Clearly, being in the cattle industry will keep you on your toes and scratching your head

at times but as with most farmers, they wouldn’t trade this career for another.

So what is a day in the life of Justin Mendenhall like?

“I usually start off the morning by checking cows then doing pig chores. Then depending on the time of the year, I go run a tractor in the field, sort cattle, haul cows, treat cattle, load pigs, or work on equipment (seem to work on equipment more than anything!). I usually am busy, with not much leisure time, but on those slow days I usually try to hang with my fiance or get little things around the farm

done that we haven’t had time to do,” ended Mendenhall.

Being a cattle farmer is not just cows, grass, and rainbows.

It’s fixing the tractor for the upteenth time, pulling a calf, tracking the cattle market, and more...possibly all in a day’s work.

And guess what? They come back in the morning to do it all again.

Celebrate by enjoying an AllAmerican juicy hamburger or a thick, delicious, mouthwatering steak on the grill during the summer grilling season. Enjoy the thrill of the grill with these simple grilling tips.

Choose your cut Some of the best cuts for grilling include the strip steak, flank steak, or ribeye steak. The All-American juicy hamburger is also a great option when it comes to grilling. Prior to cooking, season your burger patty or steak with herbs and seasonings, as desired.

Prepare your beef Trim visible fat before grilling to help prevent flareups. For best results, grill over medium heat. If the food is grilled over too high heat, the exterior can become overcooked or charred before the interior reaches the desired doneness.

For charcoal grilling, when coals are medium, ash-covered (approximately 30 minutes), spread charcoal out in a single layer and check cooking temperature. To check the temperature, cautiously hold the palm of your hand above the coals at cooking height. Count the number of seconds you can hold your hand in that position before the heat forces you to pull it away; approximately 4 seconds for medium heat. For gas grilling, gas grill brands vary greatly and grilling times may need to be adjusted.

Cook your beef To determine proper

degree of doneness for ground beef, insert an instant-read thermometer horizontally from the side into the center of the patty to ensure an internal temperature of 160°F. Color is not a reliable indicator of ground beef doneness.

For steaks (1/2 inch or thicker), insert an instant-read thermometer horizontally from the side, so that it penetrates the thickest part or the center of the steak, not touching bone or fat. After cooking, let steaks rest before serving to achieve desired degree of doneness, which may range from Medium Rare (145°F), Medium (160°F), and/or Well Done (170°F).

Local Area Happenings Leon Calvary Baptist Church Revival

The Leon Calvary Baptist Church (across from the football field) is hosting a Revival May 25-28. Guest speaker will be Jeff Myers. May 25, 26 and 27 the evening begins at 7:00 p.m. and May 28 an 11:00 a.m. time during regular service and another one in the evening at 6:00 p.m.

(Hwy 2 & 69, west edge of Leon). A morning get together with rolls, coffee and juice is scheduled from 8:00 - 11:00 a.m. followed by the evening reunion with snacks from 5:30 - 11:00 p.m.

At last weeks Decatur County Hospital open house held during National Hospital Week, employees, their families and the local community enjoyed wonderful food, carnival activities and the ever popular dunk tank (brrrrr on a very windy day).

Members of the staff took turns waiting to be dunked in the not so warm water.
