“We have limited parking at the Junior/ Senior High School and not enough spots for every driver,” stat ed Principal Johnson.
“Since the beginning of the school year, we have had three fender benders in the parking lot. This is due to the overcrowded lot that is caused by the number of drivers.”
It has been deter mined that between students who are old enough to drive and staff, there is a total of

How many of you remember that the school’s mascot wasn’t always the Cardinal? Back in the day when the school was known as Leon High School the school’s nickname was referred to as the Maroons.
Thanks to a let ter I received from long-time subscriber Francis S. Scott (1946 graduate) he gave me a little history of when the name changed to the Cardinals. The fol lowing is his account.
‘Circa 1945, John Shaw (head cheer leader) spearheaded a movement that changed the Leon High School name from Maroons to Cardinals. Burbank Halstead (County Auditor) suggested the name and it fit the fight song of Red and Black.’
Thanks Francis for sending this little note. It was perfectly timed as we are cele brating Homecoming this week at CD.

We traveled to Iowa City Saturday afternoon to watch Maizee and the Simpson Storm take on the Hawkeyes in a scrimmage match-up. The Storm held their own and played great defense through about 4 innings and found themselves trailing 2-0. After that, errors started to plague the Storm and lack of hit ting the ball. Through
10 innings of play, the Storm managed only 5 hits. It was fun to watch a D3 school go up against D1 and hold their own, so to speak. I proudly say Maizee was 1 of the 5 hits with a line drive down the third base line.

Our family was sadden on Monday with the passing of my Uncle Bob Harden of Odebolt, IA. Bob graduated from Leon High School in 1951 so many of you may know and remember him in his youth. Uncle Bob served in the US Army and earned the rank of Staff Sergeant after serving in Korea. Uncle Bob loved the farm and raised hogs and fed cattle. Cardinals Shutout Trojans, Win Third Straight
Besides the single touchdown, the first down was a battle of field position, each quarter won by oppos ing sides. CD won the field position game in quarter one and Pleasantville won in quarter two. The key difference between each quarter was that CD's defense refused to break.
CD forced backto-back goal-line stops in the second quarter after a turnover gave Pleasantville favorable field position. That mo mentum stayed with the Cardinals in the second half, where CD took control on both sides of the ball.
a turnover on downs, sealing the game for CD.
CD's offense put to gether 274 total yards of offense. Sam Boothe completed 6 passes on 15 attempts for 77 yards and 1 touch down. At the time of writing, Boothe is 4th in Class 1A for passing yards and 5th in total offensive yards.
Scrivner caught 3 passes for 49 yards. Scrivner is 1st in Class 1A in receiving yards, tied for 2nd in recep tions and 2nd in receiv ing yards per catch.
Rockhold hauled in 2 receptions for 18 yards and the 1 touch down.
hurried and inaccurate throws. That pressure and physical play from the Cardinals forced three turnovers, all fumbles, which helped stagnate Pleasantville's offense further.
Scrivner led the Cardinals in total tack les with 7.5, an assisted tackle for a loss and one fumble recovery. Kale Rockhold recorded 7 total tackles, an assist ed tackle for a loss and one fumble recovery.

The Central Decatur football team traveled to Pleasantville to face the Trojans Friday, September 23. Pleasantville entered the game 2-2 this sea son, coming off a 13-35 loss to Sigourney Keota
in the previous contest. CD held Pleasantville scoreless, winning 27-0, the Cardinal's third vic tory in a row. There was little scoring in the first half of the game, with just one CD touch down. That came late
in the first quarter off an 18-yard reception from Kale Rockhold. Rockhold hauled in a 5-yard out route and plowed through the Trojan defenders to find the end zone, his first touchdown of the season.
CD Boys and Girls Won XC Meet
By Coach Reece Tedford Central Decatur cross country teams ran on a nicer weath er night Thursday, September 22 at Moravia. Wasn't the level of competition CD is accustomed to but the kids ran great team races and found differ ent ways to challenge themselves. The high school boys/girls won the team titles along with the middle school girls. The course had great footing but was long closer to 3.3 or 3.4 miles so times are not reflective of any thing realistic.
The high school girls ran well as a group with a scoring spread of 2 minutes which is very solid in 1A. The top 3 were only separated by 39 seconds and we know we can still tight en things up.
Senior Harrisen Bevan led the way with her first race win of the year. Harrisen has now earned as many medals as any other Cardinal in history.
Aniston Jones had pos sibly the best race of her career in 4th as she moved up and was very competitive in the final half of the race.
Addy Schreck (7th) ran in that front group for a good chunk of the race, making our top 3 a tight pack.
Hadley Bell (11th) was in that grouping as well but dealt with some lightheadedness in the 2nd half of the race.
Abigail Leahy and Makenna Perkins fin ished 14th and 15th, respectively, giving consistent tough race effort to earn the last 2 medal spots.
Annika Evertsen is improving and ran her best race in 19th.
HS Boys
The high school boys were led by senior Vincent Carcamo who won his 3rd race of the season. Vinny looked strong as he caught the lead vehicle multiple times during the race.
Joe Sheetz (2nd) continued his break
out year punctuating a strong 1-2 finish for the boys. Both Vinny and Joe finished ahead of an individual state qualifier a year ago in 3rd.
It was a nice 1-2 that was followed by another duo in Kyle Linhart (6th) and Ari Johnson (7th). Ari and Kyle worked together and probably had PR type races going but the course was just long.
Maddox Kistler (11th) with another great outing sealed the team scoring and also surely would have PR'd in 11th.
Cody Morgan and Kacyn Watson are making nice improve ments and finished in the final medal spots in 14th and 15th. Kaycn Watson had a great finish battling for that 15th spot.
Anden Hall ran strong over the 2nd half of the race to finish 18th.
The boys have re ally held the fort down but will get a nice lift
The Cardinals scored once in the third quarter on a Champ Walker 1-yard touchdown rush. The run was set up by Walker on defense, who stripped a Pleasantville ball carrier at midfield. Jack Scrivner caught the ball in midair and returned it 46 yards be fore being chased down at the Trojan 1. Walker and the Cardinal ground at tack scored twice in the fourth quarter. The first touchdown came off a 7-yard rush. Walker shook off one tackler, hit the gap made for him and waltz into the end zone. Walker then exploded for a 36-yard rushing touchdown immediately after the Cardinal defense forced
in a couple weeks as Gunnar Smith will re turn from injury and the boys' team will con tinue to get more dan gerous.
Middle School The middle school girls continue to look good putting 5 in the top 7. Taylor Leahy continues to run at a high level to win her 3rd race of the season.
A flood of Cardinals followed. Shiann Byrd in 4th, Piper Helton 5th, Grace Leahy 6th, Lola Helton 7th, Aubrey Schreck 10th, and Fremont Bevan 12th. The girls' pack is very strong and it will be interesting where they register at the MS state meet. Their scor ing spread was 1:32 but only 47 seconds from 2-5.
The MS boys also ran really well. Beau Waugh (2nd) ran a very competitive race at the front of the pack and is improving. Blake Tedford had his stron gest race of the season in 6th and moved up during the race.
Jaydan Broich caught 2 receptions for 13 yards.
Walker put togeth er another impressive rushing game, finish ing with 185 rushing yards on 27 carries and 3 touchdowns. Walker is currently 3rd in Class 1A in rushing touch downs, 5th in total touchdowns, 3rd in allpurpose yards and 8th in rushing yards.
Cord Hamilton gained 13 yards on 3 rushes as well.
The CD defense stepped up time af ter time in big situa tions. The Cardinals maintained control of the line of scrimmage throughout the game and continued to get pressure on the Trojan's quarterback, forcing
Cord Hamilton regis tered 5.5 total tackles and an assisted tackle for loss. Mason Allen tallied 4.5 total tackles and one fumble recov ery. Broich and Wyatt Hamaker each finished with 4.5 total tackles for the Cardinals. Ty Rasmussen recorded 1.5 tackles and a cru cial strip sack in the second half.
Head Coach Jon Pedersen was pleased with how his defense played.
"In some other games, one mistake on a play meant a touch down. I thought that we rallied as a team to cover some mistakes on those types of plays. We also executed at a real ly high level in the red zone. Same story dif ferent week, we are un derstanding our roles and their expectations better. We are getting to a point where we can react instead of think," said Head Coach Jon Pedersen.
Coach Pedersen has
The Cardinal defense has played solid far this season. As seen here in a recent game, Matthew Foltz (top), #15 Cord Hamilton, Mason Allen (bot tom), #88 Jack Scrivner, and #29 Jayden Broich team up and put a big hit on this Panorama ball carrier causing the fumble.
Aniston Jones had possibly the best race of her career in 4th as she moved up and was very com petitive in the final half of the race.

By off the Southeast Warren Warhawks last Tuesday,
been thrilled with the progression this team has shown throughout the season. Each week the team shows im provement on the field, whether it be through the X's and O's or on the sidelines as team mates. This triumph over Pleasantville seems to be a combina tion of both.
"It is what we are striving for every play, every practice, every game and every sea son. It is not just as easy as talking about it, it takes great effort. I am really proud of how far we have come as a team," added Coach Pedersen.
"We will see how the rest of the season goes record wise but one thing I'm sure of, we will compete and play together, they have felt what it feels like and want to work towards that feeling each week. Years like this is what makes me love coach ing."
With three games
September 20. CD en tered the match 2-7 while SEW entered 13-9. SEW defeated CD 3-0 (25-18, 25-21, 2516). CD has not beaten SEW since 2016.
left in the regular sea son, the Cardinals are looking to continue to improve.
"We'll keep build ing relationships, work on skills that we need to play together as a team and continue to put our players in situ ations that they get to use their strengths. We are kind of boring, we will do the same thing we have been doing all year," said Coach Pedersen.
The victory puts CD at 3-2 on the season. CD will host Van Buren County this Friday, September 30 for their Homecoming game. The game is slated to start at 7:00 P.M. Van Buren is 3-2 this sea son, coming off a 22-16 win over Cardinal. Last season CD defeated Van Buren 22-14.
"Van Buren is big and physical. They have won in many different fashions. They have won in defensive slug fests and in high scor ing fastbreak games. We struggled against them last year so I ex pect a very competitive game this year," said Coach Pedersen.
Each set started out back and forth, but the Warhawks pulled away and the Cardinals were unable to close the gap. The Cardinals struggled to pass the
ball at times, and the Warhawks took advan tage where they could.
Lexi Jensen led the way for CD with 10 as sists, 6 kills, 7 digs and 1 service ace on 87% efficiency. Malloree Horn recorded 4 kills, 1 assist and 13 digs. Giorgia Pelliciari tal lied 3 kills and 7 digs. River Hamaker record ed 3 kills, 2 blocks and 7 digs. Amy Potter fin ished with 1 kill and 2 blocks. Cinzie McElfish recorded 1 dig and 2 service aces on 82% efficiency. Breegan Lindsey recorded 1 kill, 1 assist and 3 digs. Kaycee Boyce recorded 2 digs and 1 service ace on 80% efficiency.
CD played in two matches this week. On Monday, September 26 the Cardinals head ed to Murray to face the 4-5 Mustangs. On Tuesday, September 27 CD hosted Wayne. The Falcons were 2-11.
Next week, the Cards host a triangu lar with Moravia and Grand View Christian on Tuesday, Oct. 4 before traveling to Corydon for a tourna ment on Sat., Oct. 8.

School Parking Changes Coming, Students and Staff to Have Parking Permits
(continued from page 1)
staff and seniors first, followed by juniors, then sophomores, and finally freshmen. When the school runs out of parking permits for the main lot, students will still be issued a parking permit, but will need to park in the gravel lot northeast of the football field. This means that while the school will be able to accommodate most of
the drivers, some of the youngest drivers and those on school permits will more than likely be required to park in the gravel lot.
“While we wait for the arrival of the park ing permits, students may park on a first come basis, so long as they are parking le gally in a designated parking space,” stated Principal Johnson. “Enforcement of park ing expectations will continue and students who park inappropri ately will be initially is sued warnings.”
According to Principal Johnson, re peated violations may result in losing campus parking privileges, a parking citation, or be ing towed. “The transi tion to the new parking expectations will only occur after we have is sued parking permits and had the oppor tunity to educate our students on the new expectations regarding parking on campus.”
Principal Johnson reminds students that parking on campus is a privilege and the school wants to provide a safe and secure experience for everyone who parks on school property.
