Interior Steel in Place, and Exterior Finishing in Progress on DCH Outpatient Clinic Expansion

Exterior brick work almost completed on the north and east sides of the building. by Shannon Erb, Marketing DCH Over the last few months, construction on the new DCH Outpatient Clinic has progressed on schedule, and soon the work on the exterior of the building will be completed. As the exterior work begins to wind

down, work on the interior of the building has already begun. Inside the building, structural steel is in place, and provides a tangible representation of the various hallways, exams rooms, offices, nurse stations, and waiting areas throughout the

new space. As the interior takes shape, the selection of furniture, paint colors, flooring, and light fixtures is also in progress. As we look at a multitude of options for these items, our goal for the building is to provide a comforting, welcoming space for our patients,

Local Farmers Market Helps Foster Community Pride

Everett Parmer's vegetable stand at the local Paradise Farmers' Market.

By David Fuller One of the challenges that all small towns have is to establish community pride. The City of Leon and other property owners have done a great job of removing old non livable houses from our community. The next step is to continue this community pride by making improvements to the vacant lots that are left after the demolition. This pride can surface as commerce, athletics, schools and community and property improvements. The Leon Journal Reporter has begun a series on community and property improvements within the city of Leon. Each story in this series will focus on an individual that has made an effort to im-

their loved ones, and our community. When you visit our facility, we want you to feel at ease, and comfortable in your surroundings. In the new waiting area, multiple seating options will be available. When you visit, you’ll be able to choose from traditional chairs,

prove the community or their own personal property. The Leon Journal-Reporter has highlighted a couple community pride projects already in the newspaper. They also are encouraging anyone who would like to nominate a neighbor or community project, to contact them at 641446-4151. Our third story is about the Paradise Farmers' Market that is located on the northeast corner of the square every Thursday. The current market was started in 1996 by "Bud" Parmer and his son Everett. Everett told me that they raised their produce in two green houses and an outside garden. As a teenager, helping his dad, Everett said that he "would never have a garden when he grew up". But here he is in 2022 still tending his gardens. He said he guesses it is just "in his blood". Everett said that at times he has been questioned on where his produce comes from. He told me that all of (continued on page 8)

Grand River Rodeo Bucks Out August 19 and 20

On the afternoon of Monday, August 1, a crop dusting plane crashed into a timbered area west of Decatur and the pilot walked away unharmed. Local crop dusting pilot Jordan Omstead, Lamoni, was forced to make a crash landing of his AT-301 fixed wing single engine air craft soon after taking off from the Lamoni Airport, when according to Chris Lane, Decatur County Sheriff, the plane lost power and was unable to climb. Omstead was not injured in the crash. Area law enforcement agencies, Leon and Grand River fire departments, along with the Decatur County Ambulance, responded to a report of a crop duster airplane down and was on fire. The plane was located in a timbered area north of the Schildberg Rock Quarry on Highway 2. Sheriff Lane indicated that Omstead was flying in a northeasterly direction when the accident occurred. The plane skimmed the tree tops before going down. Omstead had exited the plane before it caught fire. The crash is being investigated by the FAA and NTSB (National Transportation Safety Board).

The 40th annual Grand River Lion's Club Championship Rodeo will be held at the Grand River Rodeo grounds August 19 and 20 beginning at 8:00 p.m. Advance tickets are still available and can be found at First Interstate Bank and Farmers Bank in Leon; American State Bank and BTC Bank in Lamoni; and at Mount Ayr at City State Bank. Adult tickets are $6 and kids are $4. At the gate, adult tickets are $8 and kids ages 5-12 are $5 with children under 5 free. There will be Muttin Bustin each (continued on page 3)

benches, pub height chairs, and even a booth. We hope the various types of seating will allow patients, visitors, and those waiting for a loved one during a longer procedure to find comfort in the different options. When checking in for an appointment, our new check in desk will allow for more privacy as you provide information we may need for your appointment. The new check in desk will have chairs for you to sit in while you fill out the necessary paperwork so you can feel comfortable during every part of your visit. Multiple check in windows will help you get checked in faster, and will allow you to have privacy if you need to ask any questions of our staff. As you move on to the next step in your appointment and meet with your provider, our exam rooms will extend the same comfort as our lobby. Each exam room will include two chairs, and an exam table if your provider uses one. If your pro-

vider doesn’t typically use an exam table, you may have a room without one, which will allow for more space in the room. After you finish your appointment, you will have one last trip through our lobby as you check out and continue on with the rest of your day. A restroom will be accessible directly off the lobby to ensure easy access to those facilities when you need them. Our primary goal with this new building is to provide access to the specialists you need, who provide the care you deserve. As we continue to evolve to meet that goal, there is another exciting update coming to Decatur County Hospital while the new building is being completed. In late September 2022, our radiology department will be installing an upgraded CT scanner. As we continue to see more cases of advanced health conditions, and as we con(continued on page 8)

Reduce Maintenance Costs By Applying For Grants For Clean School Buses

The Leon and Lamoni School Districts are among more than 200 school districts in Iowa that meet criteria to apply for grants through the Clean School Bus Program. Iowa State Auditor Rob Sand is encouraging Iowa school districts to apply for rebates offered by the Environmental Protection Agency’s (EPA) 2022 Clean School Bus Program (CSBP) as a way to save Iowa tax dollars. After the application process closes on August 19, the EPA will offer eligible school districts up to $500 million to replace old school buses with new zero-emission and low-emission school buses. “This program is an opportunity for school districts in Iowa to update their fleets with zero or reduced emission models that vastly reduce fuel and maintenance costs, saving Iowa tax dollars,” said Sand. The Bipartisan Infrastructure Law of 2021 provides up to $5 billion for the Clean School Bus Program through the fiscal year 2026. Grants, rebates, or contracts are available for up to 100% of the cost of replacement buses and charging and fueling infrastructure. The EPA may also prioritize applications from rural school districts, high-need local education agencies, and tribal schools.

TWICE TOLD TALES 20 YEARS AGO (August 7, 2002) The Leon Little River Car Show was another great success in its seventh year as cars from as far away as Oklahoma rolled into town. Despite a scorcher of a day, over 157 vehicles were on display. The Statue of Liberty that sits in the Decatur County Courthouse yard received a major facelift. At the time, the statue was 52 years old. Decatur County Board of Supervisors pictured with the statue were Gary Stripe, J.R. Cornett and Larry Eastin. Senator Charles Grassley gifted the City of Grand River $30,000 to be used towards purchasing a fire truck for use with grass and brush fires. The money was part of funding for 23 Iowa communities from the United States Department of Agriculture, part of the Community Facilities Economic Impact Initiative grant program. The family of Allen and Virginia Miller of rural Leon held a card shower celebrating their 25th wedding anniversary on August 11. Decatur's Darlings for July 2022 at the DCH were Breckin Lawrence Davis, son of Amanda and Heath Davis of Lamoni; Landon Brant Gilliland, son of Gina and Travis Gilliland of Lamoni; Maizee McKinze Lindsey, daughter of Corey and Tonya Lindsey of Leon; Alexa Marie Anderson, daughter of Brandy and Tracy Anderson of Mt. Ayr; and Shakota Mae-Lynn Williams, daughter of Angela and Bryan Williams of Decatur. Four generations: great grandfather Floyd Collins, grandfather Don Collins, fa-

ther Clint Collins and Jordan Collins; and great grandmother Shirley Collins, grandmother Linda Joyce, mother Melissa Sunata and Micah. 50 Years Ago (August 10, 1972) The new Lutheran minister, Rev. Robert Faga and family, moved to Leon from Latimer. They were living in the Presbyterian Manse while the Lutheran Missouri Synod was building a house for them on Ben Lou Drive. Beside Rev. Faga, the family consisted of his wife Sonnie and David, 16, Cynthia, 15, Becky, 8, Gayle, 7 and Marla, 4. The congregation was also planning on building a new church as well. Delegates from Decatur County to the Iowa Republican State Convention were Lee Hewlett, W.H. Barnes, Frances Campbell, Anthony Crandall, Paul Griffith, David Haseltine, Harold Tabor, Alice and Carl Coffey, Eleanora Miller, Oda McKern, Dean Vaughn and Homer Warren. Richard Virden and Robert Kelly, both of Leon, were attending Army Basic Training at Fort Leonard Wood, MO. Both men were then transferred to Fort Carson, CO. Receptionists at the Decatur County Museum were Himena Hoffman, Enola Downard, Teresa Tullis, Doris Rhodes, Edna Young, Eileen Hamlin, Leonore Barrett and Edna Young. First and second place winners in the Leon Library Summer Reading Program were Shelly Dunn, David Webb, Irene Miller, Danny Ridgway, Shanda South and Tammy Foland. Honorable mention went to Beth Carroll, Susan Mullins, Sherry

Long home where she was employed. Taking a dainty pink costume, she tore out the underskirt so it would fit her better, dolled up in the rings, packed her baggage and started for Canada with $40 in her purse. The trousseau belonged to Mrs. A.N. Ahlgren, wife of the commander of the American Legion Post. When arrested the girl was going under the maiden name of the bride, that of Miss Ruth Long, and was handing out the bride's former calling cards. Trains stopped at the fair ground – Arrangements were made whereby all passenger trains except the early morning south-bound train, stopped at the fairgrounds starting on Tuesday noon and continuing until the night train Saturday to unload and take on passengers going to and from the fair. Marriage Licenses – Ralph Dorn and Merle Boyd; Olin F. Richardson and Roxanne Bowen. Marriage – Vernon A. Nichols and Bertha V. Peck were married in Des Moines. LIZ CARPENTER And the heat continues! Well, it is August after all and school will be starting soon. Some things just never seem to change. Cassie Daleske reports that Axel Lane is excited for school to start back up, Andrew Lane is still haying, and Cassie is still working at Walmart. And the cycle of life continues. Clay Parkhurst and Breanna Main went to the Lake of the Ozarks last weekend with all the family and had a super fun trip! Even Lonny Lane got in on some fun in the water. Always fun to don your swimsuit and enjoy the water at the Lake of the Ozarks! Holly, Dylan, Benson, and Kyra Parkhurst had fun at the Blythedale Fair Friday evening. Then they also had fun at Grandpa Larry’s family vacation to Lake of the Ozarks. They had fun swimming and shopping and enjoying family time. Drew Parkhurst and his family also went down to Lake of the Ozarks for the weekend. It was a great weekend for family time! Tuesday Liz Carpenter and friends Holly Howell and Linda Perkins went to Altoona and Des Moines. They enjoyed shopping, lunch, and lots of laughing. They, too, are getting ready to go back to school. W e d n e s d a y Philinda Snethen went to Des Moines with Donald Waddell. On Thursday, Julie Snethen and Jefferey Reyes and Kay Herring stopped over and visited Philinda Snethen. Sandy Osborn stopped by Liz Carpenter’s Wednesday to pick up some eggs and for a short visit. Alma and Ronnie Mickelson spent the weekend with Maigen, Emaleigh, and Kamarie at their 1st ABGA goat show in Adel, Iowa. They had great family time and learned lots

about their goats and how to improve them. Learning and having fun together as a family is a great way to make memories. They are excited to go again next year. Friday, Liz Carpenter and friend Linda Perkins made another trip to Des Moines to take care of some business and do a little more shopping. Donna Ogier ran into Lamoni Saturday morning before it got too hot and visited her sister Jan, and Charlene Fisher. She also checked out the new meat market. While there she was pleased to meet up with her good friend Ann Zieger. Always good to run into friends when you are out and about. Cassie Daleske and Andrew Lane stopped by Wednesday and helped Liz Carpenter get the license plate off her daughter’s car. Liz had a new plate to put on it, but the bolts on the old one were rusted on pretty tightly. Took a pair of vice grips and more muscle than Liz had to get it off. Fortunately, Andrew had both the vice grips and the muscle for the job. Have a good week, be kind to each other, and take the time for family and make some memories.

the produce he sells is either grown by him or purchased from local farmers. Since Everett has a greenhouse he can plant his tomatoes as early as the middle of March. This gives him a month and a half longer growing season than most Iowans that plant outside gardens. This means that when most gardeners are planting their tomato plants, at the first of May, Everett already has tomatoes that are ready to eat. Everett is right, gardening seems to be in the family blood. Although she is now a nurse, Everett's daughter Addy worked in the garden growing up, keeping with the tradition started by her grandfather and father. She was active in FFA and used the garden as some of her required education projects. She also entered produce in the county and state fair. One year her tomatoes received a grand champion award at the Iowa State Fair. The Paradise Farmers' Market in Leon is open from the last Thursday in June to the second Thursday in

October. The hours of operation are from 3:00 p.m. to 5:30 p.m. and is located on the north side of the courthouse square. Any vender is welcome to set up a stand in the market. The cost is $5 a week or $65 for the season. The produce does not have to be organic, but it must be local, fresh and come from an Iowa producer or farmer. There are currently five venders that are active at the Farmer's Market. Lacey Bell, from Clear Sky Flowers, sells cut flowers that she grows in her garden in Leon. Everett Parmer sells produce that he either grows in his garden and greenhouse in Van Wert, or purchases from other local farmers. Carol Yoder sells homemade baked goods. Mark Wells sells produce. Finally, Becky Housberg sells apples, that are grown on the Apple Trails Family Orchard. Each vender sets their own price for their goods provided. I would like to challenge the local vendors that take their produce to the Des Moines Farmer's Market each week to give the local market a chance and sell their produce here

in Leon. It would be nice to see more vendors and customers on the Leon square every Thursday afternoon. This would definitely bring back some pride to the community. Recently, one of the local vendors, Lacey Bell, from Clear Sky Flowers received a "Choose Iowa Grant". With the grant monies she received she plans on improving her transportation that will allow her to expand to new markets. One of the things she would like to do is put in a new flower cooler which will allow her to keep her flowers fresher, after they are cut. Anyone is welcome to either attend the market each Thursday, or set up your own stand. With the cost of groceries and food on the rise this might be a way to purchase fresh produce at a reduced cost to you. Also, if you have a garden and have extra produce, each week, this would be a way for you to share that extra produce with other members of the community. Please come join in, and we look forward to seeing you at the market.
