Leon Little League Ball Program Upgrades by Keegan Bethards Lace up your cleats, oil your gloves, adjust your ball caps, and get ready Little Leaguers! Due to changes in the Leon Junior League’s ball program, our hometown sluggers now have the opportunity to take their game to the next level. “We are in the process of joining Little League Baseball and Softball. This is the same Little League that hosts the Little League World Series on TV each year. We will play our regular season just as we do now by drafting teams and then an All-Star team will be selected to represent our league in the district tournament. If we keep winning we could potentially go all the way to Williamsport or other World Series tournaments,” stated Shane Akers, Leon Junior League board member. The youth summer ball program in Leon has been a part of the Tri-County League. “This [league has] originally consisted of Ringgold, Decatur, and Union counties. Since then, we have expanded the league to include Clarke and Wayne county. After chartering with Little League, we plan to change the name to South Central Iowa Little League or SCILL,” shared Akers. Within the Tri-County League, each town funds their program through concessions, business sponsorships and entry fees. In joining Little League, the prior funding will not change but the league will be able to receive some of the money from each town to pay for the services provided by Little League. Funds are used to update equipment, aid with field improvements, uniform costs, insurance coverages and etc. Joining Little League will also open access to grant money for league improvements for fields and equipment. “They will provide us with a lot of resources that we don’t currently have. After joining Little League, all towns will be required to purchase insurance. Leon already does this but other towns will have to start covering their kids. They provide free background checks on all volunteers which helps ensure
the safety of the kids participating,” commented Akers. What else can be gained from joining Little League? Annually, the Little League organization will provide rule books to each team. This will allow for rule consistency every season. As it is now, rules are discussed then tweaked or changed each year. The biggest change will be the tournament at the end of the year. The regular season will continue normally as any other season but at the end of the season, an All-Star team will be chosen. “[The] All-Star team will be selected by the coaches to represent our league in the tournament. To be competitive, it is recommended that we combine a few counties together to select a team,” continued Akers. “Little League, however, breaks it down even further [than grade levels] and allows a 9-10 year old team, a 10-11 year old team, and a 11-12 year old team. This will allow us to still have a lot of kids participating in the All-Stars even when combining with other counties. The Little League tournament will take place at the end of June for girls and after July 4th for boys.” Boundaries are being drawn to set up team lines for play. Due to timing, current surrounding league teams are not joining this year. Akers concluded, “The plan is to get everything set up and then add them next year. If everyone currently involved joins, we will have Leon, Lamoni, Mt. Ayr, Tingley, Corydon, Allerton, Humeston, Osceola, Murray, and Afton.” If you’re a fan of watching the Little League World Series in the summer, this is great news for the Leon and surrounding area communities. This is a chance for aspiring Jennie Finch(s) and Babe Ruth(s) in southern Iowa to be put in the spotlight. REMINDER: Leon Little League registration is taking place NOW and is open until March 11. The forms are available on the Leon Junior League Facebook group. Contact Bailey Cornett at 442-2527 for further information.

VOLUME 85 - NUMBER 06
Chief Deputy Ben Boswell was sworn in last Friday afternoon as the new Decatur County Sheriff following the resignation of former Sheriff Bert Muir.
Attorney Miller, along with officials from the Iowa Department of Public Safety, served the notice to Muir at the sheriff’s office Friday. He was to be removed immediately pending a hearing. However, Muir chose to resign instead. The hearing would have been held March 21 with both he and his accusers, but due to the resignation, the hearing will not be held. Muir was elected to the positon of sheriff in 1998, and has served in that capacity for nearly 18 years. He was talking about running for another term this year. As of Monday morning, Muir is not facing any civil lawsuits or criminal charges, according to Iowa online court records. According to an article that appeared in the Des Moines Register on Saturday, March 4, 2016, Muir has denied the accusations and looks forward to retirement. The Decatur County Board of Supervisors called an emergency meeting on Friday, March 4 at 2:15 p.m. It was noted that this meeting was called, giving less than 24 hour notice, as required by Iowa Code, due to the resignation of the sheriff. The Board needed to appoint someone who had the full authority of the law. Therefore, following the acceptance of Sheriff Muir’s resignation, the Board officially appointed Chief Deputy Ben Boswell as the new Decatur County Sheriff. He accepted and was given the oath of office by Decatur County Clerk of Court Traci Tharp. He immediately assumed his role as sheriff.
Decatur County Sheriff Bert Muir resigned Friday in the wake of a petition that was filed that alleged he committed acts of sexual harassment in the workforce. The petition, which called for Muir to be removed from office, was filed by Des Moines Attorney Thomas H. Miller last Friday morning, March 4. Miller was appointed to this case only a week ago Monday when the Decatur Coun-
ty Board of Supervisors approached him to do so. In addition to the sexual harassment accusations, the court document also indicated that Muir committed acts of assault which included such things as pulling hair, hugging, pinching, and squeezing. The petition indicated that severalpeople made such claims, but the names of those making the claims were not made public.

This historic marker, set last week, is a reminder of the Jefferson Highway that ran from Winnepeg, Canada to New Orleans, LA from 1916-1926. The route came from the north into Leon, turned east at Saint Brendan’s Catholic Church to Main Street, then south through the business district and on down South Main to SW 11th Street where it turned west going back to old Highway 69, continuing on south towards New Orleans. This project was spearheaded by Rotary 600 District Governor Loring Miller, to promote the historical significance of the highway and an effort to get other towns up and down the route to mark the route as well. The rock marker, located on the vacant lot just off Highway 2 along Main Street was made possible through grants of the Rotary Foundation, Rotary District 6000 and the South Central Iowa Community Foundation.
