Pledges Towards the Leon Noel Park DEKKO Matching Grant Ends March 31
There is only one week left to the deadline for the DEKKO Matching Grant, to make your pledge donation to help with improvements at the Leon Noel Park (Little League Fields). The DEKKO Foundation has awarded the City of Leon a 2 to 1 matching grant of $50,000. In order to receive the full amount from DEKKO, the city needs to raise $25,000. As of Monday, March 21, $12,650 has been raised. Improvements (see photo above) that will be made are installing a sidewalk that will span the entire park, a new back stop on the main field, and expand parking. With a donation of $100, you can sponsor a section of sidewalk and have a plaque embedded into the concrete with a memorial on it or your family’s name. All pledges must be made by March 31st to count towards the matching portion. Make your pledges by calling Leon City Hall at 641-446-6221 or by email at deputyclerk@leoniowa. org.
Actor Ashton Kutcher Contributes to Central Decatur Education By Keegan Bethards In celebration of #BestSchoolDay, Ashton Kutcher set out and funded all 132 classroom projects across the state of Iowa on the DonorsChoose website. “DonorsChoose.org” is a website where teachers can ask for donations to help fund projects for their classrooms and resources for their students. How did CD benefit? One project was an interactive magnetic whiteboard for Mrs. Whitney Hanthorn’s preschool classroom. According to Hanthorn, “This whiteboard will make a difference in my classroom because it will provide so many more learning opportunities for students.” Hanthorn’s current whiteboard is nearly wore-out and non-magnetic. Preschoolers are unable to write on it due to residue build-up and the location’s height. The new one will provide a double whammy-

opening up many new learning opportunities for the preschoolers, including more of a handson-learning environment. “The magnetic board will allow my students to use curriculum materials to review letters and numbers. They will also be able to manipulate and sort pictures by beginning sounds, pictures that rhyme, or numbers of syllables in words. “There’s endless possibilities!” Hanthorn stated. Project number two included the funding to purchase animation stations and a green screen. Mrs. Joni Readout, Master Teacher, and Mrs. Becky Andrews, CD Librarian, are in the process of creating a “MakerSpace” in the high school library. This space will be open to students before, during and after school hours where they will be able to experiment as they choose. “Our ‘MakerSpace’ will make a difference because it will help students to love learning [and] will benefit Central Decatur students because it will provide tools for our students to invent, experiment, build, tinker and create. We are very excited to see what our students dream up,” Readout stated. “Central Decatur students
will benefit from the ‘MakerSpace’ by being able to create, design, and explore new avenues with 21st century skills. We are no longer in an education where you sit at a desk and do paperwork,” added Andrews. Hanthorn and Readout are both very grateful for the contribution Kutcher made. Hanthorn stated, “I had to read the email a couple of times to fully understand how my project was being funded. I was pretty excited and jumped on his Facebook to express my gratitude!” Readout and Andrews celebrated with high-fives and hugging. With all the excitement, this celebration dance caught the attention of other teachers who then joined in with them. “I was in shock! When I saw it was funded, I was elated!” shared Readout. Kutcher was one of sixty celebrities, business leaders, and athletes who participated in celebrating #bestschoolday by funding classroom projects all over the country. More than 14 million was donated to nearly 12,000 classroom projects. To quote Ashton Kutcher“I try to make good decisions as decisions come up.” Well, Mr. Kutcher, we applaud your decision that impacted Iowa’s schools—and particularly one close to home, Central Decatur!

Hill to Compete in Iowa State National Geographic State Bee
Just before Spring officially arrived Sunday, late Saturday afternoon, Mother Nature decided to show she wasn’t quite ready for the golfers to hit the links at the Leon Country Club. The area was hit with a brief snow storm that blanketed the ground in white. However with the mild temperatures, the white stuff was gone almost as fast as it came down, but it sure gave a beautiful sight while it was happening. The National Weather Service was predicting rain, snow and winds for this Wednesday and Thursday and for Easter weekend. Sounds like the Easter Bunny might need his raincoat and be prepared for seven wet Sundays if it rains on Easter.
