School Districts Call for Vote In just a few short weeks, the qualified voters in Decatur County who are in the Central Decatur School District and Mormon Trail School District will go to the polls to vote on different propositions that will affect each school community. On Tuesday, March 3, the voters of the Central Decatur Community School District will cast their vote for or against the following proposition. “Shall the Board of Directors of the Central Decatur Community School District in the County of Decatur, State of Iowa, be authorized for a period of ten (10) years, to levy and impose a voter approved physical plant and equipment tax not to exceed one dollar and thirtyfour cents ($1.34) per one thousand dollars ($1,000.00) of assessed valuation of the taxable property within the school district, and be authorized annually, in combination, as determined by the board, to levy a physical plant and equipment property tax upon all the taxable property within the school district commencing with the levy of the property taxes for collection in the fiscal year beginning July

1, 2020, and to impose a physical plant and equipment income surtax upon the state individual income tax of each individual income taxpayer resident in the school district on December 31 for each calendar year commencing with the 2020 calendar year, or each year thereafter, (the percent of income surtax not to exceed nine percent (9%) to be determined by the board each year), to be used for the purposes permitted by Iowa law?” The voters of the county residing in the Mormon Trail School District will head to the polls on the same day and decide for or against on the following two propositions. 1. “Shall the Board of Directors of the Mormon Trail Community School District in the Counties of Wayne, Clarke, Decatur and Lucas, State of Iowa, be authorized to contract indebtedness and issue General Obligation Bonds in an amount not to exceed $5,515,000 to provide funds to construct, build, furnish and equip an elementary school addition and to improve the site?” 2. “Shall the Board of Directors of the Mormon Trail Community School

District in the Counties of Wayne, Clarke, Decatur and Lucas, State of Iowa, be authorized to levy annually a tax exceeding Two Dollars and Seventy Cents ($2.70) per Thousand Dollars ($1,000), but not exceeding Four Dollars and Five Cents ($4.05) per Thousand Dollars ($1,000) of the assessed value of the taxable property within said school corporation to pay the principal of and interest on bonded indebtedness of said school corporation, it being understood that the approval of this proposition shall not limit the source of payment of the bonds and interest, but shall only operate to restrict the amount of bonds which may be issued?” The Absentee Precinct is the Decatur County Auditor’s Office. A request for an absentee ballot by mail must be received by the Auditor’s Office no later than Friday, February 21. Voters may cast a ballot in person during normal office hours through 5:00 p.m. Monday, March 2. Polls will open at 7:00 a.m. and close at 8:00 p.m. (Central Decatur CSD voters and Mormon Trail CSD voters will vote at his/ her General Election polling place.) School Board Members Honored

Community Members Partner to Provide Beds for Animals (Contributed info.) On Saturday, February 1, Decatur County Conservation and Decatur County ISU Extension partnered on an event called "Hearts for Australia". During this event, participants learned about the animals being affected by the Australian bushfires, snacked on some fairy bread, and made animal beds for the wildlife in need. With the help of over 30 participants, they completed 19 beds to donate! It was reported that other seamsters who weren't able to make it to the event or didn't get the chance to sew their bed, plan to make a few more at home to donate as well. "With all of this great support, we should have over 25 beds to send to animals in need!," shared Stalder. "We appreciate all of the participants who helped make beds, and the people who stuck around to

Last Friday, February 7, prior to the home basketball game, Chris Coffelt, CD Superintendent, recognized Igor Takacs and Shaun Schaff for their years of serving on the CD School Board of Education. Coffelt read "Directors of the Central Decatur Board of Education volunteer countless hours of unpaid time to provide leadership to ensure the best possible education for our students. As elected leaders, they represent our entire learning community in their continuing commitment to local citizen control and decisionmaking for our public schools." "In November, Directors Shaun Schaff and Igor Takacs transitioned from the Board of Education. We would like to recognize them for their service to Central Decatur Community School District." "Shaun Schaff served as Director, Vice President and President of the Board

of Education during his 8 year tenure on the Board." "Igor Takacs also served as Director, Vice President and President of the Board of Education during his 14 year tenure on the Board." "During their tenure, Central Decatur grew and developed as a school district, including the implementation of a teacher leadership initiative to improve student learning and better support teaching, invested in career and technical education programs, increased student achievement and improved district facilities, including the construction of our athletic complex, a new bus barn and a recently completed greenhouse." Coffelt extended his appreciation to Shaun and Igor for their service and leadership to CD and expressed how CD is a better school district because of their commitment.

It was also reported that Australia is no longer accepting shipments of animal beds or any other items from other countires due to the outpouring of people donating such an abundance of these items already.

No need to worry, as there are so many shelters all over the state (and the country) that have animals that need this help so these beds will now be donated to animal shelters in the surrounding areas. As a sidenote, Australia is still accepting monetary donations for food and sanitary needs for the animals.

Boswell and Carson Advance to Districts

Two Cardinal Wrestlers have advanced to the District Competition this Saturday at Knoxville. Dakota Boswell (182), pictured at the left in the left photo, finished second and Tegan Carson (195), pictured at the center in the right photo, finished first at Sectional Wrestling that was held at Albia Saturday afternoon. On the podium, Boswell was joined by Sage Walker of Eddyville-BlakesburgFremont, 1st place finisher and Logan Demichelis, Charton, 3rd place finisher, in the 182 pound weight class. Carson was joined by Connor Reed, Eddyville-Blakesburg-Fremont, 2nd place, and Jayden Allen-Winson, Chariton, 3rd place, in the 195 pound weight class.
