GUIDE OR BE GUIDED

The delegates got to do a bit of tourism under the guidance of Piotr Osmański, Tymoteusz Ułanowski and Igor Rychlicki. The tourists divided in two groups and took off to see the beautiful sights our gothic city has to offer.

of sin and a good person, but if you fail you’re a sinner. From there they went to the suspected house of the patron of the city Nicolaus Copernicus. Moving on, the delegates got to hear a bit about the Jewish heritage of the city on the street Łazienna, which translates to bath street called that because back in the day there used to be a mikveh there. A mikveh is a traditional Jewish bath, the one on Łazienna was unfortunately destroyed during the Holocaust. Continuing they went to Ciasna, which translates to narrow street, there they could see an old crane used to lift things to the flats there, and the brand new mural on one of the walls.

The tour then marched to the old castle ruins where back in the day the Teutonic Knights used to have

03

their headquarters. Later on the castle was destroyed and for a long time was used as a trash dump, until it was cleaned and turned into a museum. To follow that up they went to see the Struga stream and the dragon statue right above it. Keeping to the animal theme the tour went to see Filuś the dog’s statue. Filuś was the dog of professor Filutek, one of the people

who helped create the University of Nicolaus Copernicus. It is said that petting different parts of the statue will have various effects, if you pet the head you’ll have good grades, if you pet the tail you’ll find love and if you touch the umbrella you’ll get money. Next up was the fountain of Flisak. According to legend there was a frog plague in Toruń and no one could do anything to get the frogs out of the city, until one day a bard came and drew them away with the sound of his violin thus saving the city.

After that was the old Townhall, which is known for its unique windows. It has 365 windows, one for each day of the year, and for leap years there’s a secret extra window that is only revealed during those years. Succeeding that, the tour went to the statue of Nicolaus Copernicus, which is arguably the most famous tourist attraction in Toruń. While waiting for the statue to be available for a group photo, the guides presented the statue of a donkey, that used to be a torture device now turned into a great photo location. To end things, the delegates took a group picture with the statue of Copernicus and went to begin the debates for the day.

BEHIND THE SCENES OF TOMUN 2023

Today we want to show you the behid the scenes of TOMUN 2023 by interviewing a very active person who is taking part in it: Antonina Janocha.

I -Interview

A - Antonina Janocha

I: What`s your role in this year`s TOMUN?

A: This year I am very happy to be the Secretary General.

I: How did the preparations go?

A: Well, it was a lot of work. We started in December, so it took 9 months. We wouldnt`ve been able to do it without all the people engaged, because there were a lot of people and they all did a fantastic job to make this event happen, but now we are all grateful that we can spend time together at TOMUN.

I: How many people were involved?

There were 156 people in staff including the managers, 16 chairs and almost 200 delegates.

I: What exactly were the preparations and what did you do?

A: Everything, every team did a different thing. Every person had a different responsibility, for example bringing everything together in the classrooms, people are taking photos and writing the TOMUN paper. So yeah, everyone did a different job and we spread around resposibilities.

I: Is the TOMUN going as planned?

05

A: Yeah, I think it`s all going quite as planned. We`re all surprised how many people are here, it`s kind of mindblowing! It`s really nice to see everyone here.

I: What are your expectations about the ending of TOMUN?

A: So, I hope that everyone will be really happy and make some friends and connections, that everyone will think of TOMUN in a good way and that they will come home with great memories and that they maybe want to come back.

Now you know a lot more abou the background of TOMUN. We hope these information will motivate you to take part in the next year`s edition!

06

THE INTERNATIONAL SIDE OF POLAND

Each year TOMUN brings a lot of people from different countries together. Today we want to show you how the delegates from afar view not only TOMUN, but also Toruń itself .

The first question that we asked the delegates was: “What do you think about the organisation of this year`s TOMUN?”. All the people who were

07

a long trip to participate in this special event. Even though they had to change the public transportation a few times, they are positive that the journey has paid off.

The third question was: “Is there anything that surprised you in Toruń?”. All of them said that everyone here is extremely nice and friendly and the atmosphere is a lot better than they had expected. One of them also mentioned that they hadn`t been aware of the fact that Mikołaj Kopernik was from here. The more you know!

The last question that we asked was: “Do you like it here in Toruń?”. Each person interviewed really love Poland, especially Toruń. One of them even said that it`s one of the most goregous city`s they`ve ever been to.

We hope this article will motivate you to take part in other MUNs and visit some other beautiful countries!

FROM TOMUN TO UN

Sitting at the opening ceremony, I couldn’t stop admiring the amount of people gathered there. Over 200 delegates from nine countries. Three continents. Can you imagine? The first ever ToMUN wasn’t even a half of it. These eight years certainly made a difference.

Looking at you all yesterday, during the Opening Ceremony I thought: „Wow, those people, at least few of them, one day are gonna be the ones

We want to be prepared. We want to be ready.

You are the greatest example that our generation is going to make the world a better place and no one can doubt that.

I’m smelling lots of fixing out there. Good luck with that, fellows.

09

SPILLING THE TEA WITH KRZYSZTOF OSMAŃSKI

To improve our guests’ lunch time, our school has prepared a cafeteria, where people can get some hot drinks, fruits, toasts or their favorite desserts. The snacks were made by students from our school.

The preparation was supervised by Krzysztof Osmański- one of the managers of the cafeteria team, who gave us more details about the whole process. He started as a team member and for the last two years he has been a manager. Organizing such a big event as Tomun is a great learning opportunity. - he said. We also asked about his responsibilities which are: shopping, preparing tables, cutting cakes. There is no division of the tasks, so everyone does what they think is needed. This year finding people willing to bake the cakes was way easier, probably because of the small reward for that. From what he told us, the best looking cakes always sell the most quickly. When we asked about his favorite food from the cafeteria he answered: I always insist on making savory stuff.Last year I prepared the best savory tart, kind of a quiche.

And advice from Krzysztof is that: Don’t buy the most expensive toaster because it doesn’t mean it’s the best. Don’t forget to step into the cafeteria.

TOMUN BEHIND THE SCENES

ToMUN wouldn’t be what it is without all the hard working teams, but what is the menagers’ perspective on the work their teams have to do? We’ve decided to ask them those 3 questions to find out:

1) What is your team doing and what are your main responsibilities?

2) What is the most challenging part of your job?

3) If you were to choose one trait that is most needed for being a manager of your team, what would it be?

And now for the answers:

COFFEINFO:

Our team is responsibe for the most important part of ToMUN - we are feeding all the hungry people here. The most challenging part of our job is managing all the cakes, making sure they are in the right place, in the right time, and in the right amount. The trait we are looking for in coffeinfo team members is probably being able to obey all the given commands.

CATERING:

The main and basically only thing my team is responsible for is discusing details with the restaurant we are working with to make sure everybody has something good to eat during the lunch break. The hardest part of strearing the catering team is letting every single commision know exactly when and

11

where the lunch takes place. The trait you need the most to be a Catering leader is definitely patience.

PRESS:

Our team’s main duty is to make sure we have enough articles to create a newspaper. We try to find the most interesting subjects to really entertain all the students taking part in this year’s ToMUN. I would say that the creative part of our job is what sometimes makes it difficult. Coming up with many different ideas that will maintain a good quality throught the whole event, can sometimes be challanging. For that reason, creative thinking is probably the most important quality that you need to lead the press team. Confidence to speak your mind and to sometimes disagree with somebody is also vital.

As you can see, preparing ToMUN requires doing many various things. Thank you team members and managers for your engagement!

FIND YOUR OWN TOMUN SPIRIT

GA2- ECONOMIC AND FINANCIAL

Today is your day. Everything will go as planned for you, don’t worry about the little details as they won’t get in the way of success, at the end of the day you’ll feel satisfied and proud of your achievements. Don’t be scared to share your amendments, all of them will pass.

HUMAN RIGHTS COUNCIL

Instead of focusing on yourself, try to pay more attention to people surrounding you. Do something nice for others and pay a compliment to someone from your committee and smile. Avoid delegates from UNICEF committee and try not to get near their classroom.

WHO

You ought to focus on your health and wellbeing. Protect your peace and don’t let anyone (especially from GA2) annoy you and distract from your goal. Today you will have to overcome many obstacles but stay strong and give yourself a favor and meditate for a few minutes.

SECURITY COUNCIL

The upcoming season brings out a unique atmosphere and romantic energy for you. You can expect someone new to come into your life, don’t be afraid or shy and let them in. Stop overthinking and live in the moment, fate is in your favor.

UN WOMEN

You might have been repressing your thoughts lately, don’t be afraid to be honest and let it all out. Remember that your opinion matters and is as important as everyone else’s. Make sure to speak your

13

mind. UNEP

Make yourself a gift, go to the mall and buy something eye-catching to you. Try to make your day more spontaneous and don’t be scared to take a risk, you don’t have to have everything planned out. Make the most out of opportunities that life gives you.

UNICEF

Today will be a busy day, so get yourself some coffee, you will need it. Also the wifi connection might get in the way so remember to stay patient and don’t let the bad vibes interrupt your work. Despite some possible problems, stay positive.

UNODC

Be young. Be crazy. YOLO. Don’t let anyone tell you what to do or think. The obstacles exist only in your head, don’t let them limit you. Look forward to the good things awaiting you in the future. You can achieve anything if you really put your mind to it! And the most importantly: slay the day.
