BATTLE OF THE BOOKS Available to grades 6-8 America’s Battle of the Books is a reading incentive program for students in 3rd through 12th grades. Students read books and come together, usually in groups, to demonstrate their abilities and to test their knowledge of the books they have read.
MATH 24 Available to grade 6 Active in September through November The Math 24 club meets once a week in order to prepare for the end of year Math 24 Competition. Math 24 is an arithmetical card game in which the object is to find a way to manipulate four integers so that the end result is 24. Addition, subtraction, multiplication, or division, and sometimes other operations, may be used to make four digits from one to nine equal 24. For example, for a card with the numbers 4,7, 8, 8, a possible solution is the following: (7-(8/8))*4=24.
QUIZ BOWL Available to grade 7 Active November through February Quiz bowl is a game in which two teams compete head-to-head to answer questions from all areas of knowledge, including history, literature, science, fine arts, current events, popular culture, sports, and more. SCIENCE CLUB Available to grades 7-8 Active throughout the school year Science Club is an after school, mentor-based science program for middle school students. This program looks at a variety of activities to promote environmental awareness and to learn more about how science concepts and principles impact everyday life.
SCIENCE OLYMPIAD Available to grades 7-8 Active throughout the school year Science Olympiad is a team competition in which students compete in 23 events pertaining to various scientific disciplines, including earth science, biology, chemistry, physics, and engineering. There are multiple levels of competition: invitational, regional, state, and national. Invitational tournaments, run by middle schools, are unofficial tournaments and serve as practice for regional and state competitions.
