Fitness & wellness design
2 years - Design - Industry Experience
While working as the 3D Concept Design Manager at ESP Fitness, I gained extensive insights into the fitness and wellness industry, working across various creative areas, including facility design, product design, interior design, and visualization.
My primary responsibility involved crafting world-class facilities, generating layouts, interior concepts, and visualizations, as well as creating the technical and architectural drawings needed to make these spaces a reality. I also worked with the team to design and visualize our own strength and conditioning equipment, creating 3D concepts and technical drawings.
As a manager, I led a small and dynamic team, collaborating with external stakeholders such as architects, structural engineers, and interior designers to conceptualize and design facilities for our clients.

Luxury Homes
Since the pandemic, there’s been a surge in demand for home gyms. Designing a home gym is a deeply personal, involving an understanding of the client’s training preferences—whether they lean towards strength, functional, or cardio workouts. Given that most home gyms occupy limited space, selecting essential equipment and maximizing storage becomes crucial. Additionally, integrating luxury finishes and meticulous attention to detail ensures the gym seamlessly blends with the overall aesthetics of the home.
Boutique hotels
Designing for hotels and residences shares similarities with designing for commercial gyms, but the spaces are typically smaller and place a greater emphasis on wellness and rejuvenation. Users of these facilities are often travelers or seeking relaxation, shifting the focus away from performancebased goals towards prioritizing mind and body wellness.

Background
Commerical Gyms
With over 10 million people visiting health and fitness establishments nationwide, the commerical gym market is thriving. However, the key to a commercially successful facility lies in crafting an unforgettable training experience and considering each user’s unique journey through the gym iis key to designing a seamless experince.
Background
Pro Sport
I’ve been fortunate to collaborate with numerous professional sports teams and institutions, such as Manchester City Football Club, Liverpool Football Club, and British Athletics. Designing a successful sport-specific facility presents an exciting challenge, demanding a good understanding of the sport in question alongside the requirements of players and coaches. Every aspect of a player’s well-being, from strength and conditioning to rehabilitation, must be considered. Additionally, teams are increasingly prioritizing player recovery as a crucial investment.

Unlike bulky alternatives, Equivision integrates its components discreetly within the helmet for enhanced comfort, safety and a less obtrusive experince.
Equivision Context
Problem Area
How might we improve equestrian experince when riding on the road?
97% of riders reported feeling anxious when riding on the road.
43% felt this way more than half the time.
Main cause of anxiety being other road users behaviors.
60-70% of riders would ride on the road more frequenlty, If they felt safer.
Redfined Brief

Incidents
1037 different incidents with riders on the roads.
135 riders injured on the road. 1 rider killed.
80 horses died as a result of an indent on the road.
40% of incidents were due to fast passing, 81% from close proximity to riders”
The Opportunity
Redesign a camera system for riders to improve driver behaviors.
/ Headcams improve drivers’ behaviors and attitudes when passing riders on the road.
/ Use of a headcam has lead to the successful prosecution of dangerous drivers.
However
/ The British eventing committee banned headcams over safety concerns.
/ Headcams can have adverse effects on helmet safety.
/ Headcams are uncomfortable and difficult to use.
/ Only 22%of riders use headcams.
Equivision Ideation
Ideation
Understanding the 3D outcome of the product was crucial for various reasons. Creating toscale prototypes allowed testing of component housing, experimentation with size/proportions, and obtaining user feedback on comfort, usability, and effectiveness during riding. Continuous interaction and feedback were sought from riders and equestrian professionals during sketching and modeling development.

Equivision Ideation
The Solution Equivision
What Is Equivision?
Equivision is primarily a riding helmet with internal front and back cameras removing the need for externally mounted hat cameras. Having the camera technology built into the helmet makes the riding experience more comfortable, safer and easier.
How does it improve rider safety & experience?
The helmet camera acts primarily as a deterrent to dangerous drivers. Research shows that driving behaviour improves when riders wear a head cam, with drivers becoming more considerate of equestrians on the road. This makes hacking out a much safer and enjoyable experience.
Key features of Equivision
Equivision
- Interal front & back 160 wide angle cameras
- Rechargebale battery pack
- Removeable SD card
- Smart clip switch
- LED Recording lights
- Apparel range
- PAS015 saftey standard
Outcome
Outcome
“I have ridden out with existing hat mounted cameras, but it was heavy. This is a good solution to that problem. Its certainly makes the car drivers slow down when they know they are being filmed. “
Equivision
Anne Prince, Working professionally with horses for 38 years.
Material used include;
- Outer shell of the helmet is resin transfer moulded from S grade fibreglass
- Impact liner is injection moulded from expanded polystyrene 100
- Buckle and other parts are injection moulded from ABS
- Harness is made from nylon Equivision
Outcome
Equivision unique selling point is its internal front and back cameras. The 160 degree wide angle lens means that you capture everything behind you and in front of you without too much distortion. Having the camera built into the helmet is safer than an external camera as it doesn’t effect the structural integrity of the helmet, and also keeps the spherical shape needed for rotational movement.
The front and back cameras automatically start recording as soon as the hat is buckled up. The cameras capture what’s going on in front and behind you. All footage is saved to a SD card with a time and date stamp. Once the SD card is full it will begin to record over the oldest footage. Footage captured by the cameras can be used in a court of law or by insurance companies as evidence.
The battery is housed is a weather proof compartment at the back of the helmet and is removed for charging. Users simply remove the battery cover to access the battery and micro SD card. The battery will give up to 2.5 hours of recording, Users can purchase additional batteries to swap out on longer hacks or to have as a spare.

Competion Brief
Help with cost of living crisis.
/ Energy cost increased by 54% in April 2022
/ In October 2022 it was predicted that users were paying £1,570 more than the previous year.
/ Prices are expected to rise to 91.8p per kWh in Oct 2023
Oppertunity
Design a cost efficient washing machine for those living alone
/ Washing machines account for 14% of a typical energy bill , the biggest consumers of energy in a domestic setting.
/ Washing on high temperatures. Even lowering washing temperatures to 30 °C uses up to 40% less energy than washing at higher temperatures.
/ Half loads waste a lot of energy, but waiting for full loads isn’t always suitable for users who live alone.
/ Overloading a machine can cause damage to the drum and makes the machine less efficient.
/ Unmaintained machines can become inefficient.

Current Fitness Photography Trends:
Ensuring each photograph is dynamic and engaging involved the strategic use of exciting compositions and angles to captivate the audience.
I established consitnet feel and color grading across all images to create a cohesive visual identity. This was achieved through careful editing in Lightroom to ensure a harmonious and professional aesthetic.
Staying attuned to current trends in fitness photography was crucial, but I also made deliberate efforts to ensure that Jacob’s images not only followed trends but stood out uniquely. This balance allowed us to stay relevant while establishing a distinctive brand presence.

Social Media Content
I am able to use my graphic design skills to create engaging and educational content for Jacob’s social media platforms. This is another opportunity to construct a recognizable brand identity by employing elements such as color schemes, patterns, and typography.
Maintaining a consistent brand image while striving to produce diverse and captivating posts presents a interesting challenge, one that I’ve tackled by adhering to the same typeface, color palette, and design elements throughout.
