Experience ESP Fitness/ 3D Design Concept Manger 2023-2022 Due to my performance on my placement year, ESP offered me a retainer to return to the company as 3D design Concept Manger. In this role I continued my creative responsibilities that I completed whilst on placement the previous year, with the added responsibility of leading a small team. During my time back at ESP we’ve designed facilitates for British athletics, Man City Football Club, and are in the process of designing an entire boutique wellness, fitness and beauty facility in Geneva Switzerland.

FLO

Flo rethinks the process of physiothreapy. Flo uses skeletal tracking to monitor users during their strengthing exerises, an AI system uses this data to create form prompts to make sure that they completing the exerises safely. Flos other functions include, Virtual video Physiotherapist. consualtions, Your home personal physio programs, AI supported physiotherapy sessions., live classes with an emphasis on stability, a library of on-demand classes with an emphasis on stability, physiotherapy session reminders., activity prompts, to break up sedentary lifestyle and goal setting and progress monitoring.

Problem How might we increase stablity in later life?

/ Older adult population to rise to 2.1billion

There are 3 million falls a year amoung the over 65’s which costs the NHS £2.3 billion. The charted society of physiotherapy believes that through strengthening activities and physiotherapy over 200,00 falls could be prevented. Saving £275 million a year.

Ideation

The Opportunity I found that the most effective way to imporve older adults stablity was to use physiotherapy and strengthening activitys.

But with waiting times to see a phsyio growing longer (On average 45 days) the chance of these number falling is unlilkey.

However during the pandemic phsyios were forced to complete their consulations virtually, opening a new oppuritinuty to redesign the process of physiotherapy and provide a more efficient service as well as creating a product that would aid with virtual physiotherapy and strength training in the users home.

/Average 45 day wait for face to face physio consulation. / 90% of physios werent using video consulation prepandemic. / 81% of physios would use video consulation post-pandemic. / Video consualtion is 11% cheaper than tradtional physio. / 47% of patients would chose video consualtion in the future. / Barriers to video consulation; outdated computer OS, crashing, insuffcient software, limited hardware, safety, lack of standardisation.

3D models were created throughout the process but was especially important in the development of size and proportion for user interaction as well as for the housing of components.

The Solution FLO What Is FLO? Flo is a home physiotherapist. The device provides a virtual portal between physio’s and patients. As well as virtual consultations FLO uses skeletal tracking and AI to give users form prompts and encouragement during daily physio exercises. Other functions include personal physio programs, live classes with an emphasis on stability, library of on-demand classes , physiotherapy session reminders, activity prompts, to break up sedentary lifestyle, goal setting and progress monitoring.

How does it improve stability in later life?

By offering virtual consultations patients can have more regular feedback from their physiotherapist compared to face to face sessions, allowing for faster progression. The AI form prompts make physio at home for effective and safer. And the daily activity reminders keep users motivated.

The goal is to increase older adults independence through daily movement, exercise and physiotherapy. Hoping this will reduce emotional strain on family and carers as well as relieving some of the social and economic strains on the healthcare and social system.

Context

equivision Looking out for riders on the road Equivision has been designed to give riders confidence when hacking out on the road by changing driver behaviours to make them more considerate of equestrians.

The simple camera technology works as a deterrent to drivers. But in the worst case scenario of an accident on the road, the footage captured by the camera can be used by insurance companies and the police as evidence.

Unlike other mounted head cams on the market which are heavy, uncomfortable and have concerns over safety. All Equivision components are enclosed inside the sleek shell of the helmet. Making using the product much more comfortable and less obtrusive.

Context

Problem Area Equestrian is a very dangerous sport, and even experienced riders can become anxious. Primary research found that the biggest cause of uneasiness among nervous riders was hacking out (riding outside an arena) especially on the road and in traffic. Hacking is a common pleasure activity among riders and can be used to de-stress both horse and rider. But the uncontrolled environment and other roads users behaviour can make the experience both frightening and dangerous. Speeding and driving too close to horses can cause horses to spook or bolt putting the rider in danger.

Results from February 2019 - February 2020 / 1,037 incidents with riders on the roads. / 80 horses died as a result of an indent on the road. / 135 riders were severely injured on the road / 1 Rider was killed on the road in 2019 / 97% of riders reported feeling anxious when riding on the road. / 43% of these felt this way more than half the time. / Main cause of nervousness was other road users behaviour (93%) / 60-70% of riders would ride more frequently on the roads if they felt safer. / The DofT have changed the high way code making horse riders priority road users.

The Opportunity I found that headcams worked as a deterrent to dangerous drivers, however there are several issues with existing products.

There are several safety concerns on using externally mounted headcams it was due to these concerns that in 2014 the British eventing committee banned the use of headcams in competition.

/In 2014 the British eventing committee banned headcams over safety concerns. / Headcams are uncomfortable and difficult to use. / Cameras adversely effect the way energy is dissipated. / Cameras effect rotational movement on the neck and spine. / Only 22%of riders use headcams. / However riders reported headcams positively change drivers behaviours and attitudes when passing riders on the road. / Use of a headcam has lead to the successful prosecution of dangerous drivers.

3D Ideation

It was important to understand the product out come in 3D. For several reasons. By creating to scale prototypes I could test the housing for components, I could experiment with size/proportions, I could get my user to try the model on and see how it felt, how easy it was to use and whether it would be a help or a hindrance when riding. Throughout sketching and modelling development I had lots of interaction and feedback with riders and equestrian professionals.

The Solution Equivision What Is Equivision?

Equivision is primarily a riding helmet with internal front and back cameras removing the need for externally mounted hat cameras. Having the camera technology built into the helmet makes the riding experience more comfortable, safer and easier.

How does it improve rider safety & experience?

The helmet camera acts primarily as a deterrent to dangerous drivers. Research shows that driving behaviour improves when riders wear a head cam, with drivers becoming more considerate of equestrians on the road. This makes hacking out a much safer and enjoyable experience.

Material used include; - Outer shell of the helmet is resin transfer moulded from S grade fibreglass - Impact liner is injection moulded from expanded polystyrene 100 - Buckle and other parts are injection moulded from ABS - Harness is made from nylon

Outcome

Equivision unique selling point is its internal front and back cameras. The 160 degree wide angle lens means that you capture everything behind you and in front of you without too much distortion. Having the camera built into the helmet is safer than an external camera as it doesn’t effect the structural integrity of the helmet, and also keeps the spherical shape needed for rotational movement.

The front and back cameras automatically start recording as soon as the hat is buckled up. The cameras capture what’s going on in front and behind you. All footage is saved to a SD card with a time and date stamp. Once the SD card is full it will begin to record over the oldest footage. Footage captured by the cameras can be used in a court of law or by insurance companies as evidence.

The battery is housed is a weather proof compartment at the back of the helmet and is removed for charging. Users simply remove the battery cover to access the battery and micro SD card. The battery will give up to 2.5 hours of recording, Users can purchase additional batteries to swap out on longer hacks or to have as a spare.
