A century from now, when Masons gather to celebrate the 200th Birthday of the Masonic Bulletin, don’t be surprised if they are also celebrating the 100th Camp Masonry. It was that good!

Brethren, Let Us Raise Our Glasses...

…in tribute to all those whose hard work, dedication and, most of all, vision helped make Camp Masonry such an enjoyable, meaningful and memorable experience. Pictured below are just a few of the Brethren that are going to be taking selfies at Grand Lodge this year. You’re going to be there too, aren’t you?

You ain’t gonna forget that the Annual 11th District Sporting Clay Shoot is Sunday, September 25th at WR Hunt Club in Clyde, now is ya?

Members and friends of Rubicon Lodge and Triune Chapter joined together for their second annual Mystery Lunch, which started with a leisurely stroll through the Hosta Glen at Simpson Garden Park. But then it was time to move on to lunch at Social gastro pub, so they had to tell the flowers “Hosta La Vista!” When Bro. Chad Simpson made his presentation on “Esoteric Freemasonry” at DC 643’s More Light Night, it was actually a Less Light Night, because his entire remarks, and the discussion afterwards, were all conducted by candlelight, one of the hallmarks of a Traditional Observance Lodge.

At the Ohio Council of Deliberation, the prestigious Medal of Honor was presented to Right Worshipful and Illustrious Brother Gary Lee McElfresh. In presenting this award, MWB Terry Posey noted that, “This talented, dedicated and caring brother says he’s so much better for his Masonic life, but we all know that Freemasonry is better off because of his devotion to our craft. He has had a positive and lasting impact on an entire fraternity, and Freemasonry in Ohio and beyond is far better because of him.” And we couldn’t agree more.

MEC Robert D. Blankenhorn, Jr. awarded Companion Kenneth A. Smith a 75 Year Award recently. Companion Smith joined Fort Miami-Calumet Chapter #191 on April 22, 1942. Ken celebrated his 100th birthday this past Spring. Pictured from left to right are Jimmie Walsh, Kenneth A. Smith, MEC Robert D. Blankehorn, Jr., Barney Stickles, Bill Niner and REC Doug Towslee. Congratulations Ken!

Damascus/Collingwood Lodge’s annual Camp and Canoe trip not only provided them with a chance to demonstrate their aquatic skills, but

Samaria Lodge was busy over the summer installing a new state-of-the-art LED sign, made possible by a 25% down payment and 10 months of interest-free financing provided by Stewart Signs. Any Lodge interested in upgrading their sign can contact WM Dustin Cunningham.

also to show off their tats and abs (or flabs as the case may be), while Evzones members settled for some slightly less strenuous summer activities.

REMARKS Greetings Brothers, Once again, it’s that time of year when we’re back from our long summer break. It certainly was a hot one this year, wasn’t it? The heat and humidity didn’t stop us from enjoying some great fellowship with our friends from around the district. Our first annual Camp Masonry outing was a huge success. We had attendees from all over the state. We enjoyed not one but two Masonic days at Cedar Point this summer and a good time was had by all who attended. Looking forward, be sure to save October 14 on your calendars to join the band of brothers travelling to Grand Lodge in support of our Most Worshipful Brother Robert C. Rill. Thanks, and we look forward to seeing you at Blue Lodge and our many other upcoming events.

During our dark period we had two EA Degrees and two MM Degrees, with another possible FC Degree by the time that you read this. We also had several brethren (myself included) take part in Camp Masonry in July. So much for being “dark!” Also, by the time you read this, we will have had our annual picnic at the Masonic shelter at City Park. I trust that all who attend...er, attended, or will have, had a great time. Thank you to Bro. Jon Dinan for scheduling this annual event! Finally, I am looking forward to another great year at Wood County Lodge. I hope that you all had a great summer, but it’s time to get back to work and I look forward to seeing you up at the lodge! Magic of Praise A lady we know said that she has a “jewel” of a maid “but,” she said, “I am careful not to let her know it; it might go to her head.” This lady has her directions mixed. It would more likely go to her heart. Why is it that so many people fail to understand that other people like praise as much as they do? Not only maids and other employees but everybody — your friends, the members of your family, your business associates, “important” people as well as the rest of us — all like praise. Praise works miracles — not only for the person praised but for the fellow doing the praising. Somehow you can’t praise others without becoming a better person yourself. It makes all concerned stand taller inside. It is astonishing how many things about people you can discover to praise if you open your eyes — and your heart. Make it a little secret policy to find something to praise somebody about everyday. Learn for yourself the magic of praise! See what it will do for you within a month! -Exchange

Remember, our newer members only know a few of us, so please join us and introduce yourselves. They want to meet you! Every organization experiences phases in its life cycle. Thirty years ago the lodge gathered to dedicate a new building and rejoice in the collective financial effort spanning decades. We are now at a similar waypoint. The largest expenditure since that original construction will result in a new roof and restored driveway. Coupled with recent replacements and improvements to the building’s operating systems, our building is prepared for the next 30 years. We can only hope that a similar restoration of spirit can also occur within our most important asset: our members. By now you should have received your notice for annual lodge dues. A Pathway to Happiness The proof of the effectiveness of Masonry is established by the individual Mason who finds happiness in learning and applying Masonic teachings. As the Mason learns more and more about Masonry, and as he uses Masonry generously in all of the activities of life, he discovers a happiness that is not to be confused with some fleeting pleasure. By understanding his own being, he understands others. By knowing his own weaknesses he is sympathetic toward the weaknesses of others. At the same time, he knows that every man has within him divine potentialities

and to freely recognize this truth is to elevate humanity. The Mason knows that it is hypocrisy to justify his own defects and to magnify and stress the faults and shortcomings of others. He is constantly aware that in speaking well of others, he reflects a basic teaching of Masonry. The progress of man is deterred by those who forever see the bad and refuse to see the good in others. The opportunity to contribute something of eternal value to Masonry is available to every Mason. He has only to speak well of others. “A man cannot speak but he judges himself.” – Exchange

September in the northern hemisphere is the seasonal equivalent of March in the southern hemisphere. In the northern hemisphere, the beginning of the meteorological autumn is September 1. In the southern hemisphere, September 1 the beginning of the meteorological spring. September (from Latin septem, meaning “seven”) was originally the seventh of 10 months on the oldest known Roman calendar, with March being the first month of the year. After the calendar reform that added January and February to the beginning of the year, September became the ninth month, but retained its name. September had 29 days until the Julian reform in 46 BC added a day. Brethren, it is appropriate that Labor Day is celebrated in the month that lodges resume labor from our summer recess. The 2015-16 lodge year is rapidly drawing to a close, but we have much that still needs to be done. Thank you for the support that you have given your lodge this year. Your ideas, support, and attendance will continue to be appreciated. Although our ancient brethren labored primarily in the quarries, we know that there is a dignity associated with all forms of labor that are honestly and faithfully performed. I hope that you enjoy the following Labor Day tribute. (Continued on Page 5, Column 4)

REMARKS Brothers, I hope all enjoyed their summer and stayed cool. First I would like to reach out to the members we have not seen in a while. Brothers, I know it can be hard to make it to lodge, but we would like to see you again. If you are unable to drive or need a ride, please feel free to contact any member or officer of the lodge. On behalf of myself and Samaria Lodge, I would like to extend a congratulations to Brother Howard Duke on being elected and installed as Grand High Priest of Michigan Royal Arch Masons. I know he will give 110 percent, and perform to the best of his ability. Brothers, our new LED sign has arrived and is installed. The sign looks great and will help us stay in touch better with the community. The Stewart Sign we have is a state of the art sign giving our lodge a much needed update with a more modern look. I would like to thank the brothers who helped install the sign. It saddens me to have to announce to you the death of Worshipful Brother Phill Boose, PM, on August 4, 2016. Phill stayed involved all the way to the end. He will be missed greatly by all. There was no service at his request. Samaria Lodge will be doing a Masonic Memorial Service for the members of the lodge and any other brother who wishes to attend on Wednesday, September 21, at 7:20 p.m. Brothers, our lodge is in a time of change, I hope for the better. It makes me hopeful to see the changes the lodge is going through and wish to see them continue. Lastly, brothers, let’s bring back Masonry. If you know anyone interested in joining, have them call the

Rubicon Lodge brothers. Thank you W.B. Brage Elliott for that wonderful FC Lecture. Now we are preparing two Master Mason Degrees and we will be calling all brothers for the Fellowcraft Team to be ready for our candidates. Due to the light interest on going on to Philadelphia for the lodge trip I will still be going east if any brother(s) are still interested, although it will not be for the entire week. The date is still the week of September 12 through 17. Friday, September 23, is the reception for RWB Mark E. Bowlick, DDGM, at Zenobia Shrine. This dinner reception is open to all lodges, all Masonic bodies and friends. Cost is ($45.00 couple) $20.00 for Masons, $15.00 for ladies, children and guests. Dress for this reception is suit/sport coat, ties optional. Each lodge is urged to have a brother prepared to roast the honoree following dinner. There will be libations and donations are accepted. Officers have tickets or they can be picked up at the Zenobia Shrine or by calling me at (419) 349-2972 I would still like to have an open house in October to invite the public in to showcase our fraternity to answer questions that folks may have about us. In closing, I only have a few more columns to write and how I do so want to make them not only special but memorable. I cannot believe that this year is so rapidly coming to an end with still so much to do. Always remember our sick and distressed brothers and sisters. Fraternally, Eric E.B. Erickson, W.M.

REMARKS Hello, Brothers, …from the heart of downtown Pemberville. Summer is speedily coming to a close. As we look back on the summer activities, I would like to thank everyone who helped with the Pemberville booth and parade! Your attendance was greatly appreciated helping with special degree work done over the break. We have a full trestle board ahead of us with degree work needing to be done!! We still have three degrees to do before November. I look forward to seeing you at lodge. V. Scott Garwood WM

Do Your Tasks While It Is Day In “Canadian” Lodges there is an admonition to be careful to perform your allotted task while it is yet day. To me this seems extremely well put and a little thought on the matter might not be amiss. We are engaged in the building of a spiritual temple, a symbolic edifice of purity and all perfection. The material need for this house not made with hands is the responsibility of every one of us, and your task and my task is the crude and shapeless blocks of granite brought up from the quarry. The work must be measured and laid out with the gauge, the common gavel used to chip away the edges and there must be constant checking with the square, Slovenly, careless work will not do. Nothing less than perfection can be accepted. One imperfect ashlar will throw the whole structure out of line. It is exacting work, and must be done “while it is yet day,” that is while we can still see, while we still are in full possession of our faculties, and have strength and energy, and the skill to apply ourselves. In “American” Lodges we are admonished that “in youth we ought to industriously occupy our minds in the attainment of useful knowledge; in manhood we should apply our knowledge to the discharge of our respective duties to God, our neighbors and ourselves, so that in age we may enjoy the happy reflection consequent on a well-spent life, and die in the hope of a glorious immortality.” Time flits by so quickly that we are in danger of coming to the end of it without having completed the task assigned We still have much to do and my time to do and my time is as short as yours.

It was a true blessing having a majority of the time off (thanks to the help of my hand surgery and foot injury), allowing my family and I to be able to spend so much time together! Like many of you who have small children, the joy of raising a family and being with friends and family is truly a gift from the Almighty. REMARKS Now that’s how DC#643 does summer! Camp Masonry was a huge success on every level. Thank you so much to those who supported the inaugural year! Our camp and canoe trip was fun and excruciating and I’m thankful for the quality time I got to spend with my brothers (12 miles was a unanimous decision BTW). The DGM roll-out was well attended and we had seven to eight members present to assure we are on track for another great year. The lodge picnic was a lot of fun, thanks to the planning of Brothers Aaron Harman and Tim Gable. Was great to see some brothers that we hadn’t seen in a long time! September will be a great opportunity for our lodge to reach out and meet many good Masons of the 11th Masonic District. There are 21 lodges in the four counties comprising the “Illustrious 11th, and I strongly recommend attending some or all of the following events. On September 1, the District Association meeting will be at 7:00 p.m., at the Zenobia Shrine. All the “movers and shakers will be there and it’s a great way to shake some hands and trade some numbers. September 25 will be the District

Damascus/Collingwood Clay Shoot. We’re assembling a team, and all skill sets are invited. May be a good chance to invite a friend to a Masonic event? September 29 is the District Awards night, at 7:00 p.m., at Sylvania-Pyramid Lodge. I’m not sure if the “Award Winning DC643 will continue collecting its wall hangers, but please come and sit with us in anticipation, and support for those across the 11th. The strongest “inner circle of Masonry is your own circle of connections. Travel, brothers. It’s what makes the difference between a club and a lifestyle. On September 13, we’ll welcome the 11th District Association President, WB Mark Allred, who will have a special presentation on some popular technology being used by lodges across the nation. All September meetings at this time are open to EA’s and up, but if you’re not getting daily updates through Facebook, you should check the lodge calendar at www.dc643.com for any last minute changes. Do you have a smart phone? We’re putting together a voluntary communication chain through an application called “Group Me. If you’d like to be added, just text “add (your name) to me at (419) 350-5714 and you can check it out. You do not need to have the app to participate, however communications and conversations will be delivered as text messages, which may not be as convenient as the app. We have some VERY special things being planned for the next 14 months. Please pay your dues on time, and please come to lodge and see what all the excitement is about. This lodge is on fire! (Not the traditional lodge fire, but the good kind—with lots of growth, potential and pride.) Jason Shamy, Senior Warden

Faith Nathaniel Hawthorne went home to tell his wife that he had just been fired from his job. “Good, she said. “Now you can write your book. “What do we live on meanwhile? Hawthorne asked. His wife opened a drawer filled with money. “I have always known that you are a man of genius, she said. “So I saved a little each week, and now I have enough to last for a year. Hawthorne used the time to write “The Scarlet Letter, one of the great masterpieces of American literature.

REMARKS Brethren, It has been a very quiet summer for the brothers of Paragon Lodge. I hope that everybody has enjoyed their time off and spending time with their families. We are getting into the fall season and back into lodge. There has been some activity at the lodge over the summer and we are proud to say we have two new air-conditioning units up and running. Thank you, Jay. There are still a couple of projects that we would like to get done before the winter season. We would like to get the doors repainted and we would like to get the lights on the outside of the lodge upto-date. If anybody is willing to take charge of one or both of these projects, please let me know. The Rough Ashlers of Paragon Lodge would like me to let everybody know that we still have seats on the bus for the Tigers versus the Indians in Cleveland on September 18. We are leaving out at 9:30 a.m. and we will be back after the game. Please contact Ben Croley as soon as you can with your reservations and for information on this event. If any specials pop up for September I will let you know by email and call list. See you at lodge.

The Memorial Lodge does not do any degree work, but only funeral services. In the performance of the funeral rites for a deceased brother, Lucas County Memorial Lodge is governed by the provision of the Ohio Masonic Code relating to Masonic Funerals. Which Are You? Some members keep their Chapters strong, While others join and just belong; Some dig right in, and serve with pride, Some go along, just for the ride. Some volunteer to do their share, While some lay back and just don’t care; On meeting nights some always show While there are those who never go. Some always pay their dues ahead, Some get behind for months, instead. Some do their best, some build, some make, Some never give, but always take, Some drag, some pull, some don’t, some do. CONSIDER, which of these are you?

Hope that all the companions and their families had a wonderful summer. I would like to thank the companions who elected me. It is my great honor to be elected to serve as your High Priest for the upcoming year. Congratulations to all the dedicated, hardworking officers elected who will serve Chapter #29 for the following year. For those officers who were unable to make the installation at the last meeting in June, you will be installed at the stated meeting on September 7. Please remember to contact Secretary Cliff Hiestand for dinner reservations, or email your reservation to ftmeigschapter29@gmail.com. The cost is $10.00 a meal. As we approach the fall season, we will be conducting chapter degree work moving forward to getting new companions into Fort Meigs Chapter. I am asking all the companions, when you go back to you different Blue Lodges, contact and spread the great word about York Rite Masonry, to their different brethren and see if they are interested in joining our chapter. To all our sick and distressed companions and their family members, you’re all in our prayers for a speedy recovery. Companions, we would love to have you come out and attend are meetings. Please remember: “Ask not what your chapter can do for each of you, but what you can do for your chapter.” God bless all the companions and their family members, Jimmy Simpson, EHP

REMARKS Companions, Well the traditional summer hiatus is now coming to a close and I am hopeful everyone had a very memorable and enjoyable couple of months. We had a very mild winter, however, this summer has been one of the driest with many days of sun and high temperatures, mostly near 90 each day. The area crops, for the most part, seem to be doing pretty good. Hopefully, the fall will yield a little more moisture to get us back on track. As we turn our attentions from summer to fall, it is time to get back to business. If you haven’t been to chapter in a while, this September is an excellent opportunity to come back and join in the fun and fellowship. In many ways the September meeting is the start of a new year as new officers have been elected and installed. Now the chapter can begin to gel with new faces in different places. As with all great and important undertakings, you will only get out what you are willing to put in. Before going dark, the chapter elected to raffle off a Henry Golden Boy Lever-Action rifle as a fund raiser. There are very few tickets left and the winning ticket drawing will be taking place at or before our September stated meeting. The September meeting will start with a dinner at 6:00 p.m. Our stated meeting will begin at 7:00 p.m. Please give some serious thought and plan to join us at the September 9 meeting. Barton Smith enjoyable and safe summer. Now it’s time to get things going again. As we enter into the last couple of months of this Masonic year, our work is not done. As you can see from the calendar, there are several things coming up. The first is a Steak Fry/Friendship Night/Stated Meeting on September 8, starting at 6:00 p.m. I thought that this might be a nice way to get us all back into lodge and also show our friends that we think would make great Masons what lodge and the brotherhood is all about. There is no cost for the steak fry, but the Beehive will be present for donations. These donations will be given to Adopt America, which is a foundation that is close to Tami and myself. You must have a reservation for dinner. NO RESERVATION—NO DINNER! RSVP must be to WM Gary by September 1. We also have degree work coming up. Just before we went dark for the summer, we did the EA Degree for our newest brother. We are hoping to finish his work by the end of the September. Then in November we have annual meeting and elections with the installation of officers scheduled for November 19, at the lodge, with a dinner at 6:00 p.m. Also during the next Masonic year, we will be celebrating the 300th anniversary of what we now know as Masons. The celebration will be held state wide on the 24th of June, with each Masonic District planning and holding their own celebration. On March 25, there will be a Grand Master one-day degree being held in various locations throughout Ohio, with one being held here in Toledo (Continued in Column 2)

Barton Smith on that day. If you have someone in mind that would make a great Mason, but completing the degree on Thursday nights is difficult, then this class would be perfect. There are some other rules that the incoming GM also is enforcing with this, but we will go into those later. We also will be having a Christmas party, like we used to have in December, so start planning now. At the first meeting in September, I will be putting together a committee to plan this event. If you would like to serve on this committee, please let me know. So, as you can see, we have a busy fall and upcoming year. Plan on attending the steak fry on the 8th and then stick around for the meeting to see what else is happening this coming year. Hope to see you on the 8th and remember to get your RSVP to me by September 1. NO RSVP—NO MEAL! Fraternally yours, WM Gary

THINK OUTSIDE THE BOX

Greetings Nobles: What a fun summer it’s been! Although it has been very busy, the great fellowship we always share with each other has rewarded us everywhere we’ve gone. From the parades and picnics to the special events and trips, thanks to each and every one of you for spreading Zenobia cheer in your endeavors and all your travels! September will keep us busy too, and as usual, the week after Labor Day will be the annual meeting of the Great Lakes Shrine Association. As a result of the event conflicting with our normal stated meeting date, please remember that our stated meeting has been pushed back one week to Thursday, September 15. We hope to see you there. The meeting starts promptly at 7:30 p.m., but if you show up early, there will be food and fellowship to share! Elsewhere in this Hadji issue, you’ll notice that there will be a special election that evening as well. Sadly, our High Priest and Prophet, Noble Richard Schroeder, had to resign for personal reasons, and his resignation was reluctantly accepted by the members of the Divan. Rich has been a very important part of the leadership team here at Zenobia, and his wisdom, insight and passion will be sorely missed. Although we will greatly miss his participation as a member of the Divan, he still plans to participate in Zenobia activities as he’s able. We wish him and Claudia the very best in all their future endeavors. Finally, there is one other important event to put in your calendars, which is the following night, Friday, September 16, at the Zenobia building in Perrysburg. That evening our Membership Team, led by Noble Troy Hawkins, will be conducting one of its highly regarded Friendship Nights. With an all-inclusive dinner and program, this event has a tremendous success rate in getting non-Masons to decide to join a Masonic Lodge. If you know of any qualified gentleman who is not a Mason but should be, please bring him and his lady to dinner that evening. Just call our Recorder and let him know so we have enough food. You’re likely to leave there with a new petition for your Masonic Lodge. Nobles, I’ve heard some say that it’s difficult to “get back in the swing of things” after taking a summer break. Nevertheless, your units need you and Zenobia needs you, so please make an effort to jump back into swing and take advantage of all the great activities coming up as the summer months draw to a close and the fall draws nearer. Once you start to participate again, you’ll realize that you need all Zenobia has to offer, as much as Zenobia needs you! As always Nobles, we thank you for your commitment to a positive and enthusiastic Zenobia. Remember that the strength of our organization derives from Freemasonry and Shrine working together, and thinking a little outside the box. Potentate Charlie

Due to the High Priest & Prophet Resigning for health reasons, Zenobia will hold a Special Election to fill the vacancy. Any office that becomes vacant because of the election of a Noble to the office of H P &P will also be filled at that meeting. The election will be held at the Stated Meeting which starts at 7:30 p.m. Notice from Zenobia Recorder

UNDER THE BIG TOP Fall is a wonderful time of year as students return to school, nature takes on beautiful colors and the plans begin for the 2017 Circus. YES, it is that time again! Zenobia is excited to sponsor another successful event. The Circus is still Zenobia’s #1 fundraiser and it is all because of everything that you do to promote it. The kick-off meeting will be at Zenobia on Wednesday, September 21. It will be a potluck, so bring a dish to share. The meat and table service will be

provided. Dinner will be at 6 p.m., with the meeting beginning at 7 p.m. Come to the potluck and enjoy the socializing and meet the terrific people who make the Circus our best! This will be one of the largest attended meetings of the year. Each club and unit is to have a representative attend to learn what is happening with this year’s Circus, and to take the information back to the unit. Communication and knowledge are important to our success, and that is a key role of these Circus

representatives. Those in attendance will learn about performances, incentives, provide input and receive commission checks. There are several items for which ideas are needed. Be sure your unit officers send a representative to this meeting. See you on Wednesday, September 21, for the 6 p.m. potluck and 7 p.m. meeting at Zenobia. Mark your calendars now. Thanks for all you do to make the 2017 Circus our BEST yet!

Dear Nobles: Grace and peace to you and yours in the name of the Great Creator. I, like you, am asking that same question, “What happened to summer?” It happens every year, but it seems as if the days move more swiftly and the summer we waited all winter for is fast coming to an end. So, it’s time once more, to think of getting back into your Shrine/Mason mode. Zenobia is once again looking for you to attend a gathering of Nobles at the September stated meeting (check the Hadji for a date change). It is always exciting to once again in fellowship with fraternal brothers to review the

ongoing work of Zenobia and hear once again about the amazing things our hospitals are doing for boys and girls with special needs. As Shrine/Masons, the fellowship we share is like no other. Our only purpose is to be the force behind the caring for children with physical and developmental disabilities. Much is asked of us, but when we see

what we have accomplished we can thank our Creator God that we have had a part in His gift of healing. So come to the stated meeting and find out how you can share in the work of Zenobia. Be a blessing to the boys and girls we are called to help. Peace, Hugh W. Bowland, D. Min. Chaplain Zenobia Shrine PS: What day is it?

First Annual Zenobia Shrine Sportsman’s Raffle Nobles: An open meeting of the First Annual Zenobia Shrine Sportsman’s Raffle will be held on Saturday, September 17, at 8:00 a.m., at the Zenobia Shrine's building. We are reviewing the committees and looking for people to either take charge of, or help with this effort to make this a resounding success. Please make all efforts to attend this event. If you have any questions you can contact Eric Anderson, 419-460-5608, or Ben Croley, 419-349-2924.

NORTHWEST SHRINE CLUB PICNIC TRANSPORTATION FUND RECEIVES DONATION In July, the Zenobia Transportation Fund received a generous donation from the Historical Truck Society of Ohio. The HTS has made a donation several times in the past, but this year’s $2,500 is one of their largest. The monies come from an annual historical truck show where no admission is charged, only donations. This year the pro-

ceeds were shared with a local food pantry and above is Zenobia’s share. The presentation was made at Zenobia (see photo) by Brent Binkley and LeMar Hetrick, President, to Ill. Sir Charles Murphy and Roadrunner dispatcher Tom Hilton. Thank you HTS for your support of the Shrine Hospitals.

Zenobia at parades and other unit events. Several attended the Roadrunner picnic and transported patients to/from hospitals. Great work, guys! Our big summer event was the Divan night on August 3. The format of grilled steak and corn was changed to the delicious Zim’s family style dinner, and was well received. This allowed members to socialize more and be able to spend the evening with guests. The Divan was well represented and was part of the 55 attendees. President John Avers welcomed all, introduced officers and presented gifts to Ill. Sir Murphy and Lady Zoe. Ambassador Jim Manning introduced PP’s and covered events before turning over to OG Dan Slavin for Divan introductions. Ill. Sir Charles Murphy thanked all for attending and for support. Greetings from the Nobles and their Ladies of the Ottawa County Shrine Club—A WHALE OF A CLUB! September—Time to get back to work! Let’s catch up to what’s been going on. Our May 26 meeting was held in Elmore at the Gathering Room. We were entertained by Kathy Druckenmiller and Kathy Bast.

September 2016

June 17 and 18, we took part in the Tabloid Sales. We had Nobles in many of the towns in Ottawa County. On June 23, we traveled to Graytown Park for a pot-luck and picnic. The hamburgs and hot dogs were great, as well as the best food in Ottawa County — our ladies cooking!!! Coming back from summer break, our first meeting will be Thursday, September 22, at the Port Clinton Yacht Club, and will be Divan Night, and Widows Recognition Night. We hope everyone had a great, safe and enjoyable summer! Until next month—enjoy Ottawa County! Rod

CLOWNS Hidey-Ho Nobles, At the writing of this article, the Clowns have already participated in 30 events and have scheduled at least another 12. I do not doubt that many more will come in before this printing. As you can all see, we are a group which is in great demand; such is the hazard of being such a popular and fun group to have around and to be around. The Clowns have gained a few more members in the past few months, for which we are very grateful. We welcome these new Nobles and look forward to having them join us at our meetings and even more in their participating and having fun in our many events. We are a very welcoming group and always enjoy having fellow Nobles join us at a meeting for a good time of fun and fellowship. Just call, so we have a count for meals. We meet on the third Thursday of each month at the Clown building, 1545 Payne Avenue, Findlay. Doors open by 5:30 p.m., we eat at 6:30 p.m. and the business meeting follows. All are welcome to attend, but please let us know if you’re coming so we have enough food. Call Steve / 419-422-9222, Jim / 419-8946347 or Chuck / 419-293-3485.

The annual telethon has not only provided a chance to connect with the community and raise funds, but also tell stories of the hope and healing that take place at Shriners Hospitals for Children - Erie.

Roadrunners

OBIA CAMPERS N ZE

A few of our Roadrunners, for different reasons, have retired from driving this summer. We’d like to thank them for their years of service taking our patients to the Shriners Hospitals. Their comments about how enjoyable it was to travel with them, and seeing their improvement through the years will be remembered for a long time. The friendships they make with other drivers will be missed, too. We still have some parades that need drivers. Contact Ralph Woessner to take one of them. You’ll enjoy the time you spend. We’re looking for new Roadrunners to join our team of drivers. Blue Lodge brothers can join our team too—contact the Zenobia Shrine for information about joining. We had a good turn out for our annual appreciation picnic. Awards were presented to a number of drivers for their special services and things they did during the year. Saturday, September 10, at 10 a.m., is our next Roadrunner meeting. Our attendance at the meetings is growing—come and join us for breakfast before the meeting. Till next month, “Keep er between the lines. Respectfully Submitted, Tom Hilton

Greetings from all of your Zenobia Campers! Since the June article, we campers have been on the move! For our June Camp Out we traveled to Nevada, Ohio, to FoxFire Campground. We traveled to “Carle’s Brats in Bucyrus for some of their famous brat sandwiches. We also toured Crossroads Factory Store, Coopers Mill and Carl’s Sinclair Gas Station (old time station and 50’s cars and memories)! July 22 to 24 found us at the Mercer County Fairgrounds, one of our HOTTEST camp outs we have seen in quite a while!! The attraction that drew us there was the Celina Lake Festival, held at Lake St. Mary’s. There were street vendors, Friday night fireworks, and more than 30 Amphicars splashed into the lake! (Vehicles that can travel on land or water) Quite a sight! For this Camp Out, we had six units in attendance (12 campers). Thank you John and Chris for a great Camp Out! Coming up on August 11 to 13 (it will be over when you read this), Dave and Pat are leading us to Sauder Village Campground. I am looking forward to that one! Remember all of the sick and shut-ins in your prayers! Until next month, keep the CAMPFIRES burning! Rod

Hillbilly Notes

Howdy Cuzzins and Flatlanders, Summer is almost gone, we only got about a month left if you don’t count Indian Summer. Anyhow, it has been hot, dry and sorta unexciting. We have done a lot of parades and as usual had a good time and are looking forward to the fall parades. We have lost some Cuzzins to the Black Camel (may God rest their souls), and hopefully at the Possum Queen Contest we will have some new ones to replace them. There really ain’t a whole bunch to say so I’ll close with my usual: “If you ain’t a Hillbilly ya oughta be. ‘Til next time take care of yourself and each other. Honor the Cob, Catfish

Highlander Hi-Lites Here we are, another summer passing, and we are continuing our progress with the band. We may not be a competition band, but we sound pretty darn good. What we need is more gigs to play. I think the Smelt Fry may have set a new record for attendance, thanks to good promotion and records kept by Dan Hannon. A great job, everyone. Our picnic was another success, but after so much good food, I need to go on a diet to regain my svelt figure. It’s been a great summer for me, but I attended too many funerals for old friends. Work on the Zenobia Sportsman’s Raffle continues. The September Memorial Service in Gibsonburg is right around the corner. It sounds like a great thing to do and I am planning on being there. There is a Friendship Night coming up on the 16th, and a Circus meeting on the 21st. Our annual meeting should be coming up on October 4, with election of officers. Be there! Be good to yourselves and kind to your neighbors. PM Giggles

Welcome back! Hope that you were able to participate in the many parades and activities, including the annual Tabloid promotion that took place over the summer. A big thank you to Northwest Shrine Club for recognizing the Divan and Past Potentate’s at their party in Defiance. Thanks Kay and Keith Winnie for hosting it; as well as to Fremont Shrine Club. Congratulations to Brian Ramsey, C.R., who will be installed as President of the Great Lakes Shrine Patrol Association in Indianapolis. Rich Schroeder, H.P.P., Lady Claudia broke her foot recently. Our best to her. Our Potentate and Divan has taken the next step on the possible building expansion. Illustrious Sirs Jeff Hammons, Ed Isaacson and Keith Tuttle serve on this committee. Kudos to Illustrious Sir Denny Gable and especially his Lady Joan for hosting our summer party. It was delicious and enjoyable. It was good to see Ill. Sir Doug Curry and his Lady Dorothy, who stopped by before returning to Florida. Also to Ill. Sir Wayne Bishop, who is recuperating from recent surgery. The Potentate’s trip to the Shriner’s Hospital in Cincinnati that took in some other sites, August 26 to 28, was well attended. For those Nobles and ladies who have never visited one of our 22 hospitals, please take the time to do so. It is very rewarding. Get well wishes to Illustrious Sirs Jeff Kuhn, Bob and Sue Secoy, and others. Bernie Welniak P.P., 330

Thanks to those who attended the Spring Ceremonial. When you see Director General Ken Janicki, ask him about the exploding deer that he saw on the way there. Hope that you were able to attend some of the many parades and activities that took place over the summer. The Patrol continued to meet, play a little euchre and harass each other. Kudos to those who helped and attended our annual Old Timers Steak and Corn Roast. Congrats to Brian Ramsey, who will be installed as President of the Great Lakes Shrine Patrol Association in Indianapolis. Ask Joan Marsh about “Peace with a little Love by using her Musical Massachusetts Fingers. You would be surprised by all the talent that exists in our unit. Speaking of talent, patroller Jack Kesling passed away recently. He not only had his own TV show, he and Alice had a fun time entertaining in many bands over the years. They also put on a number of skits at GLSA and Imperial over the years. The Patrol received a nice thank you note from the Cincinnati Shriners Hospital. We sent three checks in equal amount to Cincinnati, Erie and Chicago Shrine Hospitals when we closed out the Patrol Golf League bank account. The Patrol dinner meeting will be held at Michael’s Restaurant on Thursday, September 1, and the ZT stated meeting September 15, due to GLSA. Think membership! Get well wishes to Bill Marsh, George and Sherri Stucker. Bernie Welniak P.P., 330

I would love to see some faces of companions that have been missing for a while. If you haven’t been to a meeting, you have missed a lot. I hope all of you had a great summer and are ready to return to our labors. I want to thank all of the companions of Grafton Acklin Council for allowing me to serve as their Illustrious Master for the 2017 council year. I am proud and at the same time humbled to have been selected to again serve all of you. Please do not forget we still are around and will be looking for members for next year. September would be a great time to bring some new companions of the Royal Arch. Please keep our sick and distressed companions in your prayers. Also let us remember our service personnel serving at home and abroad. I urge every companion of this council to remember those less fortunate and practice that truly Masonic virtue of relief. Officers, if you cannot make a meeting, please let the Illustrious Master or Deputy Master know either by phone or e-mail. Fraternally, Eugene Gray Jr., IM

The Unity of Freemasonry As every Master Mason who visits in another jurisdiction than his own soon discovers, the rituals of no two grand lodges are alike. They all tell the same story, are founded on the same legends, have the same truths, but they do this with differing arrangements of sequence and of words. I Nevertheless, the ritual of Freemasonry is the basic rock upon which all the Masonic rituals of all the several bodies of Freemasonry are built, or from which they departed on a voyage to secure for themselves a new ritual … the wiser a Mason becomes in any of the concordant bodies, the longer he lives and learns within them, the more convinced he is of the primacy of that which is given the initiate when he is raised to the Sublime Degree of Master Mason. -Exchange

Upward Look As we journey through life we should cultivate the habit of looking up, since so many of the best things in life are above us; the blue sky, the moon, the stars, the rainbows, the green boughs of trees, the fleecy clouds, the flight of birds, the great big sun and the glorious sunsets. “I will lift up mine eyes into the hills,” says the psalmist. Surely, that man lives only a poor and lowly life, who never learns to look off into the distance and up into the heights. So much in the overall character of the days depends on the direction given to it in its earliest hours — the first thoughts, words, emotion, deed. Someone has said that the first moment of the day is a tuning fork on which we strike the keynote for the entire day.

What’s Your Favorite Thing?

“Our friends are the people whom we choose, usually friends are the same sort of people as ourselves. My neighbor is the man whom I do not choose; he is the man whom God gives me. He is the man who happens to live in the house next to mine; he is the man who happens to sit opposite to me on the train; he is the clerk who works at the desk next to mine. I have no right to say that he is no concern of mine, because, if I am a Christian, I know that he is the man whom God has given to me.” – Stephen C. Neill

Founded in the Hearts of Men “The ancient temple of King Solomon has crumbled into ruins; obelisks and pyramids, built for the purpose of defying mutations and decay of ages, have disappeared, temples and cities, perfected by the science of Masonry (the glory and pride of the world for centuries), have gone to decay and ruin since our order has had a name and place upon the earth. Nations have risen and fallen, established kingdoms and empires overthrown, but Masonry still survives; the most ancient, the most honorable, and the most humane organization — except the church since the foundation of the earth.

Moonlighters President: Jeremy Sharninghouse. MEETINGS AND EVENTS Tuesday, September 6, 7:30 p.m. – Stated Meeting. REMARKS Most chapters are returning from summer holiday, but Greenwood was not dark in July and August. In July, prior to the stated meeting, we enjoyed a potluck with a presentation from Tim and Wanda Voland on their trip to Israel. In August, we had a dinner for our scholarship recipient prior to the state meeting. A small group of us also enjoyed a Mud Hens baseball game in mid-August. And the Bowling Green Masonic fraternity had its yearly picnic at the Bowling Green Municipal Park at the end of August. It was a very enjoyable summer. But now, the fall is here and it’s getting to be the time that we think of transition with the change of the season. We are looking forward to Grand Chapter at the end of the month, which will prepare us for next year. Our newly elected officers are preparing for a new theme, new station and events. Greenwood will be joining our Masonic Fraternity on September 1, at Bowling Green State University, for their Campus Fest. We will introduce ourselves to the students with the intent of increasing our membership. Line officers will start meeting again on September 10. We are looking forward to seeing our sisters and brothers we have missed over the summer. Blessings to all of you and we look forward to enjoying your company again soon! Denise and Tim

Toledo members are to bring a dish to pass for all. When Sylvania Chapter merged with Toledo, we took sponsorship of the Sylvania Rainbow Girls. One of their members, Kaitlyn Richardson, was elected Grand Charity in Ohio at Grand Assembly. She also received the Excellence in Youth Award for the 11th Masonic District. Century Club is having their annual Hobo Dinner/Hay Ride at Richard Burhow’s on September 17. Bring a side dish to pass for the evening meal. We were saddened to learn of the death of Suzanne Smith. We would love to see you at our meetings. Shari and Rollie

When I read in some alarmist book that the Christian faith is now on trial, or “at the crossroads,” my impulse is to answer, Why Not? Does anybody know a time when the Christian faith was not on trial, or when the Christian life was a simple walkover, with neither principalities nor powers to dispute its advance?” – J. Edgar Park

Looking back to our last meeting in June, we were honored by a visit from the Worthy Grand Patron, Bill Taylor. The chapter room was filled with many visitors who warmly greeted the WGP and enjoyed his witty remarks. After chapter closed the crowd was entertained by a quiz bowl game on facts about the USA. The two teams were headed by the WGP and his fraternal “Mom,” PGM Gail Walsh. It seems that mother does really know best because her team won! Looking forward to September, we’ll be visiting two more mystery states. Our first meeting on September 6 will begin with a pot-luck supper. Sloppy Joe sandwiches will be provided. Please bring a salad, dessert or side dish to share. We will eat PROMPTLY at 6:30. On September 14, we have been invited to Toledo Chapter for Sister Chapter Night. Sunday, September 25 – Installation of 2017 Grand Officers in Dayton. Tuesday, September 27, 7:30 p.m. – Stated Meeting. REMARKS We hope you all had a great summer. I know that some of us traveled far away and had a great time. Some of us stayed at home and suffered the heat. Let’s all go to our chapter meeting and hear about our summer vacations. There are lots of stories to tell and to hear about. September 23 through the 25th is our Grand Chapter. I will be there serving on the payroll committee. I hope to see many of our members having a great time celebrating a great OES year, and watching our next Grand Chapter officers get installed for another great year. This is such an inspiring time. Another reason to go to the Grand Chapter meetings is that you can meet the WGP of Arkansas, Richard Olmstead. He is the brother of our late Jim Olmstead. He will be visiting and I assure you, he will be delighted to meet all of you. Please remember our sick and shutins with a card, a call or a visit. It makes their day. We are looking forward to seeing you all again. The more we get together, the happier we’ll be. Diane and Jack

We are still looking for fund raising ideas, so if you have an idea let one of us know. Also have to boast a little, make the drive down to North Baltimore sometime on the third Monday starting in September and take a look at our spruced up meeting room. The Temple Board spent some time and money on new carpet and paint. New stadium seats are ordered, but may not be installed by the September meeting. Thanks to all who helped.

I’m into the second full week of my retirement, anxious to set a schedule for all of the things I really need to do and what I want to do. First of all … our secretary, Peggy Heider, wanted me to remind you that dues are due. Anyone who has not paid dues by the end of September will be suspended. There will be special entertainment by Big Chuck, who has become a regular at the annual dinner dance in March. RSVP to Dick at (419) 855-4717. At our meeting on September 20, we are honored to have a special guest: the 2016 Grand Marshal, Sister Jan Cosby. We will honor Sister Jan and all past and present Marshals. If you have ever been installed as Marshal, please come so that we can honor you. We also will give appropriate sendoff to our members Marsha and Larry Kujawa, who are serving the Grand Chapter this year as Grand Page to the DGM of District 7, and the Grand Aide to the Grand Chaplain. Since our summer break we have been saddened by the deaths of Brother Don Carvin and Sisters Jerolene Bair and Marie Ellison. Please keep the families of these dear sisters and brothers in your prayer. Remember all of our sisters and brothers … God knows their needs. Future dates for your calendar: Tuesday, October 4 – Annual Chapter Birthday Party; Tuesday, October 18 – Installation of Officers (closed meeting); Saturday, October 22 – Bus trip to Frankenmuth. Remember, please help to keep this great nation of ours “One Nation Under God.” Patti and Tom Serving proudly as your Worthy Matron and Worthy Patron and both proud to have served as Grand Marshal

Many events happened during the summer and the Penguin Nation would like to give the membership a brief update. Our final meeting of the month was Officer Appreciation Night and we visited Sister Chapter Night at Lotus Chapter, having lots of good food, games and, most importantly, fellowship. July was our annual rummage sale that we held at the lodge and sold many items for our ways and means. We received thank you notes from our three scholarship recipients and all are very grateful for everything Port Clinton Chapter has done for them. Regular stated meetings are scheduled for September. Join us if you can! Grand Chapter is September 22 through 25. Some of the officers will be there and would be thrilled if you could come to Dayton. Mark your calendars: Pie making project will be in October at the lodge and installation of officers will be November 10, at 7:30 p.m., with Rod and I returning to the East. Rod and I hope you had a warm and enjoyable summer! Until next time, remember: “Years from now, when you talk about this, and you will, be kind” (Tea and Sympathy). Vicky and Rod

and it is time to start back up again. We trust that you were able to enjoy a few relaxing days in July and August and are rested up and eager to begin again. I would like to thank everyone who participated in our activities over the summer—our combination Picnic/Sister Chapter with the members of Palestine Chapter was well attended and everyone had a great time with plenty of food and great fellowship. We also were treated to a trip to Bowling Green, where we enjoyed a trip to Snook’s Dream Cars followed by dining and card playing with the members of Greenwood Chapter. We all had a fantastic time learning how to play Shanghai Rummy, not to mention the wonderful food prepared by their members —and the special gifts given to us by their members, including the delicious homemade jam given to us by Linda Cottrell. What a delightful surprise! We followed up in the summer months with two garage sales—one in Woodville and the other in Stony Ridge. I thank everyone who helped work during these sales. Special thanks goes out to Marilyn, Rhea, Joan and Don, Margie and Dick and Peggy for all their efforts during the Stony Ridge garage sale, when the heavens opened up and we got that much needed downpour of rain (which wouldn’t have disappointed us if it had waited a few more hours). We will not have a meeting on September 5, due to the Labor Day weekend, but we look forward to seeing everyone on Monday, September 19. We would like to have special refreshments following our meeting that night, so we are asking everyone to bring their favorite apple or peach dessert to share. Our Associate Conductress, Roberta, has taken charge of a special project selling Carruth items during September. See her if you don’t have your order blanks and she will gladly see that you get one. This is a great time to purchase a gift for that hard-to-buy for person on your Christmas list. Grand Chapter completes our activities for the month of September and many of Woodbine Chapter members will be traveling to Dayton to watch our Grand Representative of Maryland participate in the Grand Chapter drills. How exciting as she, escorted by her husband Dick, proudly carries the flag of Maryland during the opening session of Grand Chapter. We continue to wish her safe travels and fun-filled days during her appointment. Please brush up on your lectures as we will have a mock initiation in October to fulfill our requirement for this term. The date will be announced in chapter. We continue to pray for our members who are ill or homebound and our service members who are giving up their life at home to keep us safe from harm. We wish a speedy recovery for those who have had surgery or sickness. May God provide comfort and protection each day. May God keep you in His care. Dottie and Bob

FOR THE FINEST In Rug, Carpet & Furniture CLEANING CALL 419-478-0581

It is exacting work, and must be done “while it is yet day,” that is while we can still see, while we still are in full possession of our faculties, and have strength and energy, and the skill to apply ourselves. In “American” Lodges we are admonished that “in youth we ought to industriously occupy our minds in the attainment of useful knowledge; in manhood we should apply our knowledge to the discharge of our respective duties to God, our neighbors and ourselves, so that in age we may enjoy the happy reflection consequent on a wellspent life, and die in the hope of a glorious immortality.” Time flits by so quickly that we are in danger of coming to the end of it without having completed the task assigned We still have much to do and my time to do and my time is as short as yours.

A Mason and A Man My Brother, Masonry means much more than the wearing of a pin, Or carrying a paid-up dues receipt. So the Lodge will let you in. You may wear an emblem on your coat. From your finger flash a ring. But if you’re not sincere at heart, this doesn’t mean a thing. It’s merely an outward sign to show the world that you belong To this great fraternal brotherhood that teaches right from wrong. What really counts lies buried deep within the human breast. Till Masonic teaching brings it out and puts it to the test. If you practice out of Lodge the things you learn within, Be just and upright to yourself and to your fellowmen. Console a brother when he’s sick and assist him when in need. Without a thought of personal reward for any act or deed. Walk and act in such a way that the world without can see That only the best can meet the test, laid down by Masonry. Be always faithful to your trust and do the best you can. Then you can proudly tell the world You’re a Mason and a Man. written by C. E. Reynolds, Delia Lodge No. 419 Kansas

Dues To-Do

By now you should have received your dues notice for 2017. True, the dues are not past due until January 1, but we put them out early to stay away from the hustle and bustle of the holiday season. You

Our favorite contributing columnist comes through again with a touching and insightful reminder of what this great fraternity is all about.

At Pemberville’s strawberry night, someone brought up the floods in West Virginia. My home town of Rainelle was the worst hit. My grandfather was a74 year member of Midland Trail Lodge #166. After talking to the secretary we learned that six of the brothers’ houses were washed away and another nine brothers don’t know if their houses will be livable. There was some discussion that we had sent some relief after Hurricane Katrina and Hurricane Sandy. One brother made a motion to send two hundred dollars to the Midland Trail Lodge. The lodge itself had some flooding, but we were thinking more of the brothers and their families. Another brother said he would add a hundred to that and another

are welcome to set them aside until that time, or go ahead and send in your money while you have it and not struggling with gifts, etc. Just something to consider: You may have noticed that OCD raised their per capita by $1.00 and, according to our by-laws, we have passed it on to the members. We did not raise dues! We continue to function on the dues income that we receive, which as you expect, is dwindling each year. Your Board has done a great job of transiting with the funds that they receive. It gets harder and harder, but they work together to stay financially stable and yet bring more value for our members. No doubt that we count on your dues. By paying them early it saves the office the expense of extra letters and notices. Go ahead and sit down and get it off your desk! Happy Labor Day, Brethren. For those who still work for a living, you deserve a day of rest. And as always, take care of yourself and I wish a speedy recovery for our shut-ins. Mike

brother added two hundred and when we closed we had $770.00. We met the next Monday to write the check and the total had raised to $800.00. Our newest MM hadn’t been to the strawberry meeting but had found out what our lodge was doing and gave another hundred dollars. Another brother said “Let’s make it a thousand,” and gave another $100.00. Another brother that hadn’t been to the meeting brought me (and John) two tickets to the LPGA golf tournament with players tent privileges (food and drinks), and when I told him what the lodge was doing he wrote a check for a thousand dollars. The following Sunday a church from over at Dowling brought blankets, clothes, cooking uten-

sils, etc., for John and me to take down on our way to the Cavendish family reunion. After church that day, a 68-year member pulled in my driveway, and as we talked, I told him what the lodge was doing for the brothers in WV. He pulled out his old billfold and said “ I have been carrying this fifty dollar bill for a long time. Take it to the Brothers down in West Virginia. I got a little choked and I thought of the widow lady that gave two pennies that Jesus told about. The three great tenets of a Mason’s profession are brotherly love, relief and truth and I am learning more about that every day in so many ways. I am proud to be a Mason. –Tom Cavendish
