THE VOICE OF FREEMASONRY IN NORTHWEST OHIO SINCE 1916

December 2016

Triune Chapter of the OES celebrated Halloween with their “Spooktakular”, with members dressing up in the spirit of the evening. Awards were presented for “most creative” costumes, and WP Jimmie Walsh was named “Most Original Costume” when he came as himself.

In keeping with their long-standing tradition, members of Oak Harbor Lodge conducted the perch fry for Oliver H. Perry’s Annual Meeting, returning the favor OHP had done the week before.

I would like to take this opportunity to give thanks to my lodge for my ascension, and make an introduction. I am an Eagle Scout, a DeMolay, a 24-year Mason, 32nd degree, Noble of Zenobia Shrine, Shrine Highlander, served in the U. S. Army in the infantry as a mortar man in Afghanistan in 20112012, a disabled combat veteran, married my best friend Tammy, and proud father of my son, B III. Installation of officers will take place in the lodge at 7:30 p.m., on Monday, December 19. As next year will be the 300th anniversary of our fraternity, there will be breakfasts and dinners throughout the year as fundraising efforts for a Lodge Restoration Campaign. It is my goal to bring the natural beauty of the interior to light and maybe even gild the lily. Also planned is the first in a series of fraternity-only chess tournaments. I would like to thank my lodge brothers for their vote of confidence, and I shall endeavor to live up to that confidence. Sincerely, B. H. Lee, II Master Elect

What Composes Masonry Today? Whatever may have been the origin or purpose of Masonry matters but little at this time. Whether in its primitive form it merely fulfilled the purpose of a trade union, or rising to a higher plane it taught the workmen that the tools with which they wrought were endowed with symbolic significance in the building of character, is after all, of but little importance. The momentous question is what is Freemasonry today? The prehistoric age lies far behind us, never to return. The present is ours. So let us of today

live and act by the Masonic application of the tools of our art. By so doing we shall raise for ourselves an imperishable monument of virtue and morality. When this living present shall have become the dead and distant past, it is the desire of the true and loyal votaries of the Craft that the student of Masonic lore shall find in us an example worthy of imitation, and derive a new inspiration from the work we have done. This being my first message to the brothers, and it is going to be brief. I want to thank all of the brothers at my lodge and the brethren from other lodges for the help and vote of confidence they have given me in the past years. I am proud to be chosen to this job of leading our lodge. I will do my best to lead my brothers in our lodge and make them proud. Again, thank you; your time helping me will have been well spent. Grand Lodge at Kalahari was great. I met new brothers from other lodges and embracing the new and old officers is beyond words. Something I will never forget. I hope to see everyone again at one of our meetings. Inspection will be February 27. Dinner is at 6:00 p.m. and inspection will begin at 7:30. Monday, December 26, we will be dark. I hope to see all of you next year, 2017. I hope everyone has a safe, wonderful Christmas and a great New Year. May God bless your families, our police officers, firefighters and military men and women here and overseas who are keeping us safe. Fraternally, Wm. Douglas Wherry WM

Poverty for All What communism or socialism advocates are saying when they want wealth distributed equally is that the ability of each of us is the same. They say this because they want to deny those who work longer and harder the fruits of their labor. There is no better way of destroying a person or a nation of people than the arbitrary enforcement of the Communism principle: “From each according to his ability; to each according to his need.” So, socialism or communism is not

Be Friendly Life is too short to be wasted in saying mean things about people. Did you ever try to go a whole week without speaking unkindly to anybody? It isn’t easy. It’s astonishing the number of harsh things we say without actually meaning to make others uncomfortable. Try to take a generous view of other people’s actions. Even if you can’t bring yourself to think kindly, at least control your tongue. It is nearly all a matter of habit. You get in the way of making spiteful remarks, without realizing how much harm it does. Just try the scheme of refraining from unkind criticism for a week, anyway. It can’t hurt you and it may do a world of good.

Trustee MEETINGS AND EVENTS Wednesday, December 7, 7:30 p.m. – Stated Meeting Festive Board at 6:15 p.m. REMARKS As your newly installed Worshipful Master, it is with great excitement that I write this column today! I am humbled by the honor my fellow brothers have bestowed upon me and I look ahead to unlimited possibilities. The 154 year history of our lodge and the principles of Freemasonry are alive and well! As Master, I endeavor to achieve open communication and outreach to the brethren as a whole. I have sent a communication to the entire lodge detailing the calendar of events for the year. The primary function of a Masonic Lodge is the development of its members. To that end, we will have a fellowship dinner before each meeting and I aspire to produce programs of interest that make us think in a positive way. Please be thinking about how we can become better members of our families, better citizens to our fellow countrymen, and the finest stewards of the ideals of Freemasonry. Why I Attend My Lodge Meetings Because I can show in this way my loyalty to my lodge, my officers, and my fellow Masons. Because I can join in a fellowship which in origin and nature is different from any other human group. Because I can contribute something to make my Lodge stronger just by being there. Because I can experience a unity of brotherly love. Because I cannot and will not take my obligations as a Mason lightly. Because I believe wholeheartedly that it is my duty to support Masonry in every way possible, and that I can aid humanity in this manner. Because humanity needs the principles and lessons of Masonry. -Exchange

Rubicon Lodge Harmony Hall at the Browning. This will be a “Ladies at the Table” event to honor the ladies in our lives and show them we truly appreciate all they do for us as men and Masons. We have a FC ready to get his MM Degree and we would like to see any member who is willing and able to join the Fellowcraft Team call or contact any officer to let them know that you would like to join in and give our new brother an outstanding degree. The holiday season is upon us, so please keep our brothers and sisters in the Armed Forces overseas who will not be with their families in your thoughts and prayers. I would personally like to thank ALL the brethren of this great fraternity for the condolences and prayers on the passing of Lady Robin’s mother. It was greatly appreciated and we cannot thank you enough. When we speak of receiving Masters Wages, this is what we are talking about. As always keep our sick and distressed in your thoughts and prayers. Fraternally, John M. Hoffman W.M.

Serenity in Expectancy New life is created daily that will definitely unify our aims and moods. To live expectantly is a way of living that makes motion equal emotion, and gives courage to cringing doubt — eliminating is the answer to most of our minor troubles that can be completely erased from mind and heart. Of course, anyone can plant radishes, but it takes courage, application to plant acorns and wait for the oaks to grow! This means living in expectancy with an eagerness for new conceptions of life that awakens new hopes and dreams. Immortality is to be gained by slow self conquest. Immortality is to be gained by establishing the fact that you are immortal now. With that expectancy your life grows richer every day; brings new interests, new evaluations, new appreciations, by acknowledgement of the continuity of God, and cultivating expectancy of good — then one becomes aware of the ever operative law of God. Rejoice and be glad that we have the ability to have a glimpse of at least a part of eternity, a continuity in the great adventure called LIFE. —Exchange

Oliver H. Perry community. Last year, we won the 2015 Gift of Lights Christmas tree decoration contest put on by the Port Clinton Chamber. Our tree received the most votes! As the winner, we got to choose the charity to receive the proceeds this year. We chose Now I Lay Me Down To Sleep, which is a local group that provides beds to needy people in Ottawa County. Make sure to check out our tree and VOTE!!! It’s the one with the large blue square and compasses! Wednesday, December 7, will be our Festive Board featuring Right Worshipful Brother Steve Hessler, a District Deputy Grand Master of the 16th District. He will present a program on the symbolism of the Holy Saints John during our lodge meeting, and we will have a dinner preceding that includes cannonfire toasts. Reservations must be made so we can know how much food to prepare. Please call or text me at (419) 5739291 or contact the Lodge Secretary. This is our fourth annual Festive Board and it is a wonderful start to the Christmas season. The second meeting of December will be on the 21st and we will handle all business that comes before the lodge. A fellowship dinner will be at 6:00 p.m. Enjoy this most wonderful of seasons and be thankful for all of the gifts we have been given. I wish all a MERRY CHRISTMAS! I hope to see you Lodge soon! Oak Harbor Lodge I hope that all of you are in the Christmas spirit, as the holiday is rapidly approaching. This is my first communication to you after being elected as Worshipful Master of the lodge. I am both humbled and honored at the confidence that you have placed in me. I give my pledge that I will faithfully lead and serve to the best of my ability! I also know that the line of officers is excited and ready to get to work as well. We have two stated meetings in December. Please note that the first one has a theme. Be prepared to share. We have pretty good attendance at our meetings, but there is always room for more. Extend an invitation to a brother who you haven’t seen for a while. As an added incentive, assure them that they will be fed and watered! I am looking forward to the work we have ahead. Our inspection is scheduled for April 5, and we will begin practicing after the new year. When warm weather comes, we will renew our commitment to our community by caring for the shelter house at Veterans Park. I also have a few special events planned that I will share in the future. Please remember in your prayers our brothers who are ill or in distress. I wish you safe travels throughout this holiday season and sincerely hope that the peace that Christmas brings will be yours, not just on Christmas Day, but all throughout the year! Randall S. REMARKS Brethren, It is hard to believe that we are coming to the end of another year. As we prepare for the upcoming holiday season, let us remember the real reason of Christmas, the birth of our Lord and Savior, Jesus Christ. It seems that in today’s world of political correctness and all, we tend to forget His birth. Also, as we head into a new year and the inauguration, let us all keep our nation in our prayers for peace and cooperation. Also, as we turn the corner into a new year, we are now preparing for our annual inspection coming up on February 2. Our inspection this year will be in the Master Mason Degree. Take a look at the calendar, and all the special meetings that you see will at least be practice nights if we are not doing degree work.

REMARKS Wow! What an honor to be elected as Worshipful Master, and I can’t be any more grateful for the officers you have chosen for the various stations. We’re going to be in good shape here for quite some time! Thank you all who attended our installation and awards night. The whole thing is kind of a blur, and I didn’t get a solid count, but I’m told there were about 100 people in attendance. I hope you enjoyed the Spanakopita! Congrats to all who received service awards, and thank you for paving the way for the next generation. I will be using the Grand Lodge Communicator to keep you posted with week to week events and plans. If you have not yet received this type of communication, please contact our secretary, WB Howell, with your current email address, because it means we do not have it. December is going to fly by. We have a lot going on, so please get involved. We need your help! You can find us on Facebook, Instagram, Tumblr and our Google Calendar is available on our website at www.dc643.com along with tickets to all of our upcoming events. On the afternoon of Friday, Dec ember 9, we will be helping with the Noel Project, assembling around 1,500 bikes for needy area families, at the Seagate Center downtown. We will go until

Barton Smith At this time, we are not sure if we will have a candidate for inspection, so now is the time to get that friend or neighbor who you think would make a good Mason involved with our great fraternity. Let me know ASAP if you have someone in mind. We made a lot of progress in the right direction over the last year, and I would love to see us continue that this year. I have been told that at one time it was not uncommon to see 40 or more brethren at stated meetings. I would love to see that again. It is up to us. What is keeping you from lodge? Hope to see you all soon at a meeting. Merry Christmas to all, WM Gary

I would like to make this year about improving ourselves in Masonry, working in and for our community, and most of all having fun while laboring in the quarries of life. Together we can have a great year!!!! We had a great time with our Canadian brothers for our installation weekend. We are looking forward to visiting with Corinthian Lodge in Canada in June for their installation. The Frankenmuth bus trip was a fantastic time had by all, fellowship, shopping and good food. REMARKS Companions, Our first meeting in December is York Rite Night on the 7th and chapter is the first body to open that night. As such, please remember that dinner reservations are a must and to contact Companion Tom Abner at (419) 346-5913 or email ftmeigschapter29 @gmail.com. The dinner cost is $10.00. As we move into the holiday season, let’s all remember the birth of our Savior Jesus Christ. Also remember our Jewish brethren and their celebration of Hanukkah. Companions, please take time to, praise God for all the bountiful blessings He has bestowed on all of us. As we count our blessings, we all do so with thoughts and prayers for our sick and distressed companions and their family members, as well as those who serve vigilantly in the military, and are unable to be with their loved ones, so that we can safely enjoy our time with those we love. Companions, our annual inspection will be in the Mark Master Degree this year and will be on Wednesday, January 18, with dinner, at Sylvania Pyramid Lodge. Please contact the Cast Director, Greg Zook at (419) 536-6122 or email Greg at gzook@aol.com to be part of this degree. Fort Meigs Chapter is looking for new candidates. Companions, please go to your Blue Lodges and see

REMARKS Companions, Somehow, we have once again reached the end of another wonderful year. As with any year there are events that just seem to make them different from any other. Just recently we experienced the Chicago Cubs ending a 108 year drought to win the World Series in dramatic fashion. Then, to eclipse that, the underdog in the U.S. presidential election won an historic political battle to be remembered for some time. By the time you read this article in The Bulletin, Thanksgiving will have taken place and thoughts will be turning to Christmas and the start of a new calendar year. Yes, we must start to make plans to forge ahead with another new and exciting year: 2017. So before 2016 is finished, give some serious thought to come out and attend your chapter. Come and join in the fun and fellowship. As with all great and important undertakings you will only get out what you are willing to put in. The December meeting will start with dinner and fellowship at 6:00 p.m. Our stated meeting will be at 7:00 p.m. Please plan to join your fellow companions for the Friday, December 9, meeting. We welcome your attendance. Remember, this is your chapter, and without you it will be hard to make it a great one. Of course, visiting compan-

11th District good men and outstanding Masons and brothers. When I started my Masonic journey I was not seeking this honor or office. I just wanted to be a Mason who goes out and makes a difference in our great fraternity. There as so many good men and Masons more deserving to lead our district, and you choose me to be that leader. From one Mason to another, I feel truly blessed to be able to work and represent our district and will always have an open ear to listen to good counsel and guidance during this time as President. Many of the outstanding brothers who have served long before me know one does not seek this position. With the support of good Masons you are sought out to serve and I thank you all from the bottom of my heart for that. By the time you read this, most if not all lodges in the district will have had their election and installation of officers completed. Our sincere congratulations to all newly elected Worshipful Masters Wardens and officers. Worshipfuls, enjoy your year in the East and officers, enjoy your Master and support your respective lodges in all that you do. District Table Lodge is only few days away and our Grand Master, MWB Douglas N. Kaylor, will be here, so please get your reservations in ASAP. This event is going to be one you truly want to attend. Inspection season is beginning, so be sure to get out and make your lodge (Continued in Column 2)

Light of World Freemasonry always has been a power for good wherever exerted. Let us prove that we are that power. Let us forget that we belong to one jurisdiction or another and remember only that we are Freemasons, abiding by the same obligations, actuated by the same impulses, striving for the same goal and present ourselves a solid phalanx of friends and brothers matching determinedly against sloth and apathy, corruption in high places and other evils which encompass us; spreading the gospel of Freemasonry which in all ages has been the Light of the World. - Exchange

The program was well planned and our guest speakers enlightened us with Masonic traditions, including ways to improve interest in the craft. Thank you to all who attended and planned the event. A special thank you to John and Mary Tansey and others who assisted in providing the wonderful refreshments. Great job! On Saturday, November 26, at 6:00, the Temple bodies are working together to have a Christmas Party. Try to attend if your schedule permits. In December, we will have our stated meeting and a Past Master Degree practice on Saturday, December 17, at 11:00 a.m. With the inspection and holiday season fast approaching, it’s important to start preparing in advance. I have tentatively set a date of Friday, February 10, at 7:30 p.m., for the Widow’s Degree. Dinner to proceed at 6:00. Let’s not forget to talk to brethren who have not joined chapter. The lifeblood of our chapter rests in our hands. To seek out new members should be something we must all think about. Please take it to heart. In closing, I would like to wish all our companions and families a safe and joyous holiday season. Spend time with your family and friends to strengthen relationships. THE ZENOBIA HADJI A Record Of The News, Tidings & Events of the Zenobia Shriners, Whose Members Are A Part Of

“THE WORLD’S GREATEST PHILANTHROPY” The Pote’s Notes

PERRYSBURG, OHIO

THINK OUTSIDE THE BOX

Greetings Nobles: As we move into the winter months we realize we can’t always count on the weather, but one thing of which we can be certain, is that the warmth of our fraternity will always be there for us when we need it. Zenobia Shriners have had a very busy month since the last Hadji was printed, and we have a lot for which to be thankful. We kicked off the season with a “Safe Halloween” event, and the response was phenomenal. Thank you to all the units and clubs for their participation and support of this new event. It was so well received that plans already are being made for a repeat performance next year! The following week, the Findlay Shrine Club and the Knights of Columbus celebrated their 75th annual get-together by co-hosting a dinner dance celebration with the ladies. This event is the longestrunning of its kind anywhere, and the Shriners came out in force to show their support to these two fine organizations. Keep up the great work Nobles; the next 25 years will pass before you know it! At our stated meeting, we instituted a new ceremony which may become a tradition, as we honored our military veterans. We had a new lapel pin struck—unique to Zenobia—and presented one to every military veteran in attendance. It was a beautiful sight, seeing all these heroes in one place at one time. We often become so busy with our daily lives that we don’t stop to realize how much we take for granted in this country. Undoubtedly, the United States is still the best place in the world to live, and we owe our way of life to our military personnel who selflessly gave to their country so that we may live freely. Then at our Ceremonial on November 12, we invited the brethren from the Valley of Toledo to join us, and we worked together toward the advancement of Freemasonry in Northwest Ohio. Thank you to those leaders of AASR who embraced this concept. The result of this busy day is that we welcomed 15 new Nobles to Zenobia! These new Shriners are all very enthusiastic and talented men who will be a huge asset to our beloved fraternity. They are excited to be able to wear the red fez, and look forward to sharing in our fun, hospitality and philanthropy. Please make an effort to welcome them when you see them. Continued on page 10

THINK OUTSIDE THE BOX Continued from page 9 Nobles, we should always pause to count our blessings, but this time of year more than others, we’re reminded of the many blessings that surround us. Please take some time to look around, and remember that nothing is possible without a commitment to do what’s right, to support others, to love all those around us, and to place ourselves in the hands of the Supreme Architect of the Universe. After all, any challenges we face are just God’s way of making us appreciate all the good things he’s given us. As always Nobles, we thank you for your commitment to a positive and enthusiastic Zenobia. Remember that the strength of our organization derives from Freemasonry and Shrine working together, and thinking a little outside the box. Potentate Charlie

Dear Noble: Grace and peace to you and yours in the name of the Great Creator God. Can you believe it? December is here and the holidays are in full chaos. The weather has once more given us a taste of winter and the cold has settled in. And while the season seems hectic with all sorts of running here and there, some things remain the same. Aside from parties and families gathering, your Shrine/ Mason brothers are still meeting. No doubt you will be going to a lodge party. No matter what your faith doctrine may be, one cannot help but sense a friendlier, more congenial atmosphere. The song “Silver Bells” tells us,

Circus tickets make great gifts. Got those ‘hard to buy for’ people? This could be your solution. Present them with vouchers that can be redeemed later. They will have a wonderful time at this terrific family fun event. Tickets at 1-800 GO CIRCUS

“people passing, children laugh ing, greeting, smile after smile” seems to be the Christmas feeling we can all share in. This is a season of giving. Too often our giving comes down to what I can give? What can I buy for Uncle Max or Aunt Bessie? But I have just the right thing you can give. You can’t buy it at Kohl’s or Macy’s or order it from the Sears catalogue. Strange, if I can’t buy it what could it be? Brothers, it is the gift of self. It won’t cost you a dime. You won’t have to stand in a long line. What you will have to do is let the world around you know that what you really do is to let your life express “Joy to the World.” To whom can you go and be a friend? To whom can you offer your best self? If we all smiled a little more, laughed a little louder and hugged a little harder, this would be the best season of your life. Peace and Joy for a Blessed Christmas Hugh W. Bowland, D. Min Chaplain, Zenobia Shrine PS: What day is it?

SHRINERS HOSPITALS FOR CHILDREN CARLISLE FUNDRAISER Ever feel that you want to make a difference for the Shrine Hospitals for Children (SHC), but not sure how? Zenobia Noble Mark Foster was able to make this happen because of his belief in the hospital system. Recently Mark’s headquarters, Carlisle Fluid Technologies (CFT), relocated to Scottsdale, Arizona, where it was decided to hold a golf outing fundraiser. The Shrine hospital system was selected as the recipient by their distributor’s board, which surprised and pleased Mark very much. The private fundraiser, which involved the company’s suppliers and distributors, was held in late October. Troy Hawkins, Keith Tuttle PP, and Dennis Gable PP, as SHC board members, were invited to “tell the Shrine hospital story” to the participants. The potentate and hospital chairman from the El Zaribah Shrine,

Phoenix, were also present. The interaction happened at the evening registration and morning golf outing. A Shrine patient, Katie, from Phoenix was present to tell her story. All of this was coordinated by Beth Sikorski (Folio) who was instrumental in the promotional success. With the suppliers and distributors coming from all parts of the U.S., as well as Canada, Mexico, England, Germany and Brazil, to name a few, the story of the Shrine hospitals was new to many of them. This event provided terrific exposure of the SHC, which will carry back to their communities and their local Shrine Temples. The SHC was well received by the many participants. The first annual event was a success from the stand point of business development. But, as a fundraiser for the SHC, it was an overwhelming success. This can

be measured by the comments, questions and stories from the participants and their enthusiasm to help the hospitals. With the ini-

tial thought of raising $30,000, all were pleased to see an end result of $70,000 to go and support our hospitals.

A big ‘thank you’ to Mark and the CFT Company for choosing SHC and providing such a strong show of support!

Zenobia’s 1st Annual Safe Halloween was a huge success! Well over 200 folks enjoyed a great time trick or treating in a safe environment while painting pumpkins, decorating cookies and jumping in the inflatable bounce house! Thanks to all those who helped make this such a success. Next year will be even bigger and better for our friends, families, and children. See you soon!

The Zenobia Legion of Honor again made the annual trip to the LOH National Convention in DC on November 3 to 6. As always, it was a great time to visit with fellow LOH’s and see the sites of the nation’s capital. The weather cooperated so all enjoyed the

many tours and events of the weekend. The ceremony involving the laying of the wreath at the Tomb of the Unknown was another moving experience. The LOH invites Zenobia members and friends to participate in the trip. This year there

were eight ‘first-timers’ who were part of the 40 on this trip. Tadmor Shrine also was represented on the bus. Stopping for lunch at Hoss’s Restaurant has become a tradition and where the group posed for the picture. Make plans now to join us next year!

HIGHLANDERS What a great time at Zenobia’s first Kids Halloween party! Despite threatening weather, the turnout of kids and adults was great, with many units having displays there. Seen there: Bob Barkhimer, Bob Brewitt (I think), Eric Anderson, Dick Reder, Johnny Mac, and Kim Corado. Good job, Guys! Dan Hannon, Chris Malhoit and I went to the Piping and Drumming seminar in Troy, hosted by David Nagy, Pipe Major of Cabar Feidh Pipe Band, and it was very much worthwhile. Recognized were several folks from the Black Swamp P. D

Hello Roadrunners, Well, we’ve been busy all year traveling to the hospitals. Thanks to all the drivers for all the trips they’ve driven. Thanks to all the drivers that retired this year, for their continued support too. Our meeting on November 19, was well attended and our officers were properly installed. We’re looking forward to next year and continuing our philanthropy, helping children by transporting them to the different Shrine Hospitals. I’m told that a number of them graduated and no longer have to return for treatment. They have

expressed their gratitude for everything we’ve done for them through the years. One patient told me that she will never forget everything we’ve done for her and asked that I thank the other drivers, too. After returning from a long day, their smiles and conversation will make your day worth while too. We’re looking for a number of Masons to join our team, to drive our special children to the hospitals. Even if you could only take one or two trips a year, we’ll welcome you to our team. Call the Shrine office for details to get started. Keep safe, enjoy the holidays, Page 15

CLOWNS Hidey-Ho Nobles, The Clowns continue to be a busy group, even as the weather turns cold. Parades and ballooning events continued all November and yet we have several more scheduled before the end of the year. The Clown/Findlay Shrine Club Christmas Banquet is Sunday, December 4, at the Findlay Country Club. Hopefully you have made a reservation and if not, call right away and join us for a great evening with other Nobles and our ladies. Our officers will be sworn in that evening, sometime between eating and the entertainment, the rest of the time will just be fun. Your Clown Unit is dedicated to entertaining and drawing attention to our great philanthropy, while having as much fun as possible. Consider joining us on the wonderful ride. We enjoy having fellow Nobles join us at our meetings for a good time with food, fun and fellowship, just call so we have a count for meals. We meet on the third Thursday of each month at the Clown Building, 1545 Payne Avenue, Findlay. Doors open by 5:30 p.m. and we eat at 6:30 p.m., business meeting follows. All are welcome to attend, please let us know if you’re coming so we have enough food. Call Steve / 419422-9222, Jim / 419-894-6347 or Chuck / 419-293-3485.

CABIRI Zenobia held its first safe Halloween on October 30, and it was a huge success. A tip of the fez to Troy Hawkins, Membership Chairman, and all those units and clubs that helped out. Illustrious Sirs Gable, Issacson and Welniak and their wives went on the annual Legion of Honor bus trip to Washington D.C. We have been there several times to watch the Changing of the Guard and wreath laying at the Tomb of the Unknown Soldier; however, the stillness and respect shown is very emotional. Team 1000 Circus Ad sellers were recognized by Circus Chairman Dennis Gable for their efforts in 2016. All ad sales proceeds are straight profit for Zenobia. If every Noble could sell just one ad, we could have a terrific year in 2017. The Scottish Rite Degrees and Zenobia Ceremonial was held on November 12. Following the downtown parade all activities were held at the Stranahan Center. Thanks to those who participated. Membership is our life line and once again if each Noble could bring in just one new member Zenobia would reap the benefits. If you receive this issue before November 29, and have not made a reservation for our Christmas party at Mancy’s Italian, call Illustrious Sir George Seney today. Rumor has it that Barb Foster had foot surgery and Illustrious Sir Ted is thinking that Barb may have scheduled it to get out of helping with the leaves. Get well wishes to the Secoys and Eakes, as well as Imperial Sir Bernie Lemieux. Bernie Welniak P.P., 330

FINDLAY SHRINE CLUB Greetings All, The Findlay Shrine Club and the Knights of Columbus had their 75th annual banquet, this being the longest running such joint gathering of its kind in the nation. It was a great success and thanks to all who joined us on that special evening of food, fun and fellowship. Whether you made that event or not, you will not want to miss the Findlay Shrine Club/Clown Christmas Party at the Findlay Country Club on Sunday, the 4th of December. This will be another fine evening of excellent food, entertainment, swearing in of the upcoming year’s officers, fun and fellowship in the company of our ladies. If you’ve not made your reservation, contact an officer of the club right away. Last but not least, the Findlay Shrine Club wishes all Nobles, near and far, a very Merry Christmas with a special prayer for our hospitals and our kids. May you and your families enjoy the blessings of the holiday and continue to support our great philanthropy for our kids.

ZENOBIA BAND

All Nobles are invited to join us at an upcoming Findlay Shrine Club meeting on the first Saturday of each month at 9 a.m., after the Blue Lodge breakfast in the Findlay Masonic Complex, 303 Osborn Avenue. Call Boyd / 419-422-9222, Jim / 419-894-6347 or Chuck / 419293-3485.

HILLBILLY NOTES Howdy Cuzzins and Flatlanders, As you read this, Thanksgiving will probably be past, Christmas and the New Year will be in the future. I hope the holidays are good to all. The election is over, we have a new president elect and I wish them well in their undertakings. 2016 was not a good year for the Hillbillies. We had a net loss of membership. The Black Camel wasn’t kind to us. We can only hope for a better 2017. Remember, if you ain’t a Hillbilly you oughta be. ‘Til next time take care of yourself and each other. Honor the Cob … Catfish

ARAB PATROL Welcome to Tom Binder as a new Patrol member. Tom is the Assistant Rabban in Zenobia’s Divan. He and his Lady Chris are coming to the Patrol’s Christmas party at the Carranor Club in Perrysburg on Saturday, December 3. Get your reservations in to Bud Crary. As always, it will be a fun time to start off the Christmas festivities. The Patrol meeting at Michael’s on November 3, went well; however, the Treasurer Bud (Donnie) Crary was in upper Minnesota and the Secretary Bernie (Dorothy) Welniak was with Zenobia’s Legion of Honor in Washington D.C. A tip of the fez to Harold Mucci for stepping in as Secretary. Don Steele, who was recently in town, went back to Arizona and had to have his gall bladder removed. Must have been too much partying while here. Bill and Joan Marsh’s daughter is working with special needs children. A very needed and gratifying position. Marilyn Hanthorne’s daughter, Vickie, spent a few days with Marilyn on her way back from Vegas. It’s amazing what you learn at the Maumee Elks the first Wednesday of the month. The joint Scottish Rite and Zenobia Reunion was held on November 12. It started with a parade in downtown Toledo with the Rite degrees and Shrine Ceremonial being held at the Stranahan. Hopefully, you were there. Get well wishes to Fred Fether at the Bowling Green Care Center and George and Sheri Stucker at the Perrysburg Manor. Bernie Welniak P.P., 330

OTTAWA COUNTY MERRY CHRISTMAS from all of the Nobles and their ladies of the Ottawa County Shrine Club—A WHALE OF A CLUB! I know this a little early, but it is the December article, and the next article will most likely be right after Christmas, so “Merry Christmas to ALL!” I thought that our October meeting would be a good one, BUT, it surpassed even my expectations! On Wednesday, October 26, we met at Inspiration Inn Bloom, just south of Oak Harbor. We were met with a beautifully decorated room, and the dining table was all set up, and it too— was beautiful! Our Divan representative, Boyd Durain and his Lady, Georgia, were in attendance, as well as our Potentate, Illustrious Sir Charles Murphy, and his Lady, Zoellen! Illustrious Murphy told me that he has been to many dinners all over, and that this one

ranked near the top of the list! There were a total of 24 in attendance. The food was excellent, and the many servers were prompt and pleasant. After the apple pie and ice cream, we were entertained by “Strings of Glory,” a husband and wife team, and their stringed instruments (dulcimer and another instrument). Our meeting followed. We discussed the normal business, as well as electing new officers for 2017. We had no meeting in November, as our Annual Christmas Party will be held at the Catawba Island Club on Thursday, December 8. This also will be our installation of officers. In closing, please say a prayer for all of of the sick and shut ins, as well as anyone who serves our country in any way. Until next month, enjoy Ottawa County!! Rod

Our first meeting in December is York Rite Nite on the 7th and chapter is the first body to open that night. As such, please remember to make your dinner reservations via Fort Meigs 29. In addition, Toledo Council 33 would like to invite all of our companions to join us Wednesday, December 14, at our inspection in the Select Master Degree. I would encourage the companions to circle that day and make it as special for our candidates as the degree is to us. REMARKS Greetings Companions, Autumn is here in full blast, and before we know it, the holidays will be in full swing. This does not mean, “Time to stay home, it’s cold,” but a time to support our fellow companions and councils as inspection season arrives. I encourage all companions to try to make it out to at least two inspections beyond our own. Participation at arch events will help us to earn points, and solidify our ownership of the First Arch gavels. Additionally, the holidays mark the First Arch’s annual sale of peanut brittle. The brittle was made in Defiance on October 26 through 28. Each council has received an allotment to sell. Bowling Green’s is available at Wood County Lodge. If you would like a few bags, please notify Illustrious Companion Sharninghouse or myself; we would gladly meet you at the lodge to pick some up. Each one-pound bag is $5.00, with $2.00 staying with our council. On to business. Although I was not in attendance at our last meeting, PIM Arnold presided. A discussion was had about dues. During our October meeting, we voted on and approved an increase in total annual dues to $30.00, from $25.00. This will be effective beginning with the dues’ mailing in May 2017. As a reminder, an announcement was placed in the Bulletin prior to the discussion. If any companions have any concerns regarding this, please feel free to email or call me. I impress upon companions: this is your council. In order to take ownership, you must participate. If you are homebound, contact another companion or myself and voice your opinion. If you can, attend a meeting. Our next regularly stated meeting will be on Thursday, December 8. Fraternally yours, Kenneth J. Rutski Illustrious Master

MEETINGS AND EVENTS Thursday, December 1, 7:30 p.m. – Stated Meeting: Annual Inspection REMARKS Companions: Our December meeting is back to our normal day and time. This is our inspection. Our inspection degree this year is the Royal Master Degree. We still need companions to come out and be Giblites: no talking, just walking. We have not had a real candidate for the past two years. We desperately need a candidate. If you know of anyone who is already a Royal Arch Mason and who is looking for a council to join, let him know we are looking for good men to join us. I want to thank all of the companions of Grafton Acklin Council who have taken speaking parts and I am looking forward to a successful inspection. Please keep our sick and distressed companions in your prayers. Also let us remember our service personnel serving at home and abroad. I urge every companion of this council to remember those less fortunate and practice that truly Masonic virtue of relief. Officers, if you cannot make a meeting, please let the Illustrious Master or Deputy Master know either by phone or e-mail. Fraternally, Eugene Gray Jr., IM

Toledo Council not, champagne day. So as we enjoy day after day of food celebrations this holiday season, we should remember to count our blessings and to do so with thoughts and prayers for our sick and distressed companions and their family members, as well as those who are serving vigilantly in the military and are unable to be with their loved ones, so that we can safely enjoy our time with those we love while we celebrate a special month for so many. What Masonry Has Done It has led men to aim at a higher and purer life. It has made men appreciate a higher and nobler manhood. It has made men understand better the problems of living. It has taught men how to die. It has permeated the whole world with its principles. It has raised the fallen and rescued the depraved. It has clothed the naked and fed the hungry. It has built homes for the sick. It has educated the ignorant and sheltered the fatherless. It has helped the church to ameliorate the conditions of unhappy humanity. Its influence has benefitted government in establishing justice and destroying despotism. -From the Ohio Mason

REMARKS Greetings Companions, Our stated meeting is on Monday, December 12, at 7:30 p.m. It is our inspection in the Royal Master Degree. We will be having a chili dinner at 6:30 p.m. And we will have fellowship and refreshments following the inspection. We have candidates, so let’s have a large turn out to make this an awesome experience for them. At the time of writing my remarks, we are planning on doing the Select Master Degree at our meeting in January, if the candidates are available. Just a reminder: let’s get out there and sell that peanut brittle for the Diabetic Kids Fund. And join us in carpooling to the inspections in the First Arch. I would like to invite our companions who have not attended in a while to come spend an evening with us. And as always, I encourage everyone to get out and travel, make new friends and see what you've been missing. Fraternally, Rodney V. Fowler Illustrious Master

That Kind of Men If we are the sort of men we have prided ourselves upon being, the sort who seek each other’s welfare and happiness equally with our own, we will help one another to know what our Freemasonry means — do this by admonition, discussion. Here is where our study clubs, our research societies and our service associations come in. But above all else we must help, each other to live the life in the shop and the market place, in the office and the factory, in the home and on the streets, so that the blessed influence of “good men and true” may be met with everywhere. - Exchange

As you can see, I have called several practices so that we can prepare. We will be inspected in the Order of Malta, however, we will be portraying the Full Form Opening of the Order of the Temple. We need as many of you as possible to lend your support. On the 16th, we will have a Christmas potluck with the other bodies meeting in the temple. Please bring you own table service and a dish to pass. Don’t forget a canned item for donation to the holiday food drive for the children at Edgewater School. Our stated is on the 21st, with dinner at Rudy’s at 6:30, so come out and enjoy a “turkey dog” with us. Finally, we all know that Christmas is here. This time of year means something different to each of us, but a common theme abounds: love. Love for family, friends, neighbors, our service members, those less fortunate than ourselves … Love for all mankind. That’s what it is all about. Remember to show love to those around you! Merry Christmas to all! David Webb, EC

Toledo Commandery Knights come to any of the practices to practice the entire degree and full form opening. Please consider coming out and supporting the commandery, even if you are not currently an officer, so that we can properly prepare for the upcoming inspection on January 21. We need your assistance to make this possible. Please remember our sick and distressed as well as those who serve our country in the military in your prayers. Fraternally yours, Tom Blansett EC

St. Omer Commandery ness, we’ll have our holiday program. Especially important! Let us keep in our thoughts and prayers our sick and distressed knights. It only takes a moment of your time to give them a call, letting them know you’re thinking of them. Happy Holidays everyone, John Tansey

Wednesday, December 14, 7:00 p.m. – Christmas Party at the home of Jeremy Sharninghouse. REMARKS It’s December and once again Christmas will soon be upon us. Keeping with Greenwood’s theme of ‘Set Your Spirit Soaring with Song,’ we sing “Joy to the World” to lift our spirits and celebrate this time of year. To share with those in our community, Greenwood will be collecting donations for the Cocoon Shelter in Bowling Green. This shelter is committed to ending domestic violence. Donations should be brought to the December stated meeting. We hope to help them “Deck the Halls” to celebrate the season and start transitions to a new life. We will travel “Over the River and Through the Woods” to visit our local shut-ins. Those who are too far away for us to visit we send “Angels from the Realm of Glory” with blessings. To celebrate the holidays, the Moonlighters group will be meeting at the new home of Jeremy Sharninghouse, in North Baltimore, on Wednesday, December 14, at 7:00 p.m. Everyone will bring a dessert to share and play some games. There will be a fun ‘Ugly Sweater Contest,’ so wear your best ugly sweater because “Baby, It’s Cold Outside”! The officers wish all our members a most joyous holiday season and hope everyone can say “I’ll Be Home for Christmas” to share it with family and friends. “We Wish You a Merry Christmas” because “It’s the Most Wonderful Time of the Year”!

REMARKS Port Clinton Chapter thanks the Installing Officers Gail Walsh PGM, Virginia Dunn, Jan Foy and Jack Worchester for an awesome evening at our installation of officers on November 10. We would like to thank the prompters, pages and aides, greeters, refreshment committee and all the Sisters and Brothers who assisted behind the scenes. Also a heartfelt appreciation is given to all the members who have dedicated themselves to serving for 2017. Congratulations to our newest member of Port Clinton Chapter and Worshipful Master Aaron Moraca of Oliver H. Perry Lodge #341. He and his officers were installed on November 5. We will have a potluck with entertainment starting at 6:00 before the Tuesday, December 13, meeting. Hope you can attend. A committee will be visiting the shut-ins over the holidays. REMARKS The holidays are upon us. Everyone is busy, but I know you will make time in your schedule for chapter. The first meeting in December will be an important one as we will be having a mock initiation and landmarks. We also will renew our obligation and Barbara will give her lecture inside the door. Refreshments will be by Kay Hough. The second meeting will be a night of fun. We will be having our Christmas cookie exchange and Christmas card exchange, with postage money going to an OES charity (to be decided). I have not yet heard of a toy collection or secret Santa. It will probably be announced at the first meeting. Come and have Christmas fun with your sisters and brothers. Refreshments by Jeannine and Jack Hardy. Don’t forget our bus trip to the Vera Bradley outlet. My sisters have now gotten me hooked, so yes, I will be joining you. Contact Pat Davis to get a seat on the bus. I am sure there will be tons of fun.

Hold Againsters Perhaps the most unhappy person in the world is the one who forever holds something against another. It may be something handed down from one family feud to another, and the present “holders” know little of what it was all about. It is a heavy load to keep a thing which has for its only purpose the means of getting even for some real or imaginary thing that happened years ago, or yesterday. And while real or imaginary, the load is still as heavy. We hear a person say: “I have been waiting for a long time for this moment,” and he means that, day after day, the ugly thought of revenge has been carried around with him. Love can move in graciously and easily to take the place of the thirst for paying back. Love is so much more conducive to one’s own welfare. Like Faith, Love can remove the rubbish of accumulated hate and establish the only real “hold” that we should desire — the hold on another’s love, his friendship, and his respect. Masonry has in its Ancient Charges the positive and direct measures that make it impossible for one Mason to be a Holder-Againster. The abundant flow of love from one open heart to another, the ever presence of the Holy Bible and the other Great Lights of Masonry, the natural concern of one Brother for the good and welfare of the other, the eternal teachings of the other, the eternal teachings of Reverence, of Charity, of Personal Integrity, forever repeated— and no true Mason can be a HolderAgainster. —Exchange

REMARKS Dear Members of Triune, At our November 1 meeting we held our “Spooktacular” evening, and a contest for the most creative costumes. There were some very creative entries and we had such fun! Rubicon’s installation was Saturday, November 19, and there was a good turnout for the new Master, John Hoffman. Triune officers helped by serving dinner before the installation, where all present enjoyed the delicious meal. Join us for our meeting on Tuesday, December 6, where we will once again honor our “Super Star” and have “Star Facts.” We also will honor our December birthdays. On Friday, December 9, we will be at the Anderson’s store in Maumee from 10:00 a.m. until 4:00 p.m., to “ring our bells” again as we help out the Salvation Army and “man a bucket.” Last year was so much fun we decided to do it again this year. We hope you can join us and have some fun singing Christmas carols. On Tuesday, December 20, we will have our traditional “White Elephant” Christmas meeting. Be sure to join us and bring a gift for the “White Elephant” exchange. We hope everyone has a warm and joyful Holiday Season and a Happy New Year! Yondota OES We hope everyone stays in good health over the holidays and let us not forget our shut-ins. We are hoping you all enjoy time spent with friends and family. I know of some who will be spending time with new grandbabies and great-grandbabies. What an exciting time. In the busy season, we need to take time to remember why we are celebrating. God gave us an incredible gift on that first Holy Night when a baby was born to Mary. No ordinary baby, but our Savior, the Lord Jesus Christ. We wish you all the happiest of Christmases. Tom Logan and Kay Hough

Port Clinton OES welcome a get well card. Call Mary Evans or Vicky Gresh … phone numbers are listed above. Please phone someone you have not heard from lately. Invite them to chapter … better yet, invite them to come along with you to the next meeting. The officers’ homework over Christmas break is to learn and memorize the initiatory work. Inspection is just around the corner. We wish all of you a Merry Christmas and Happy New Year. Safe travels for all that will be visiting friends and family. Until next time, remember: “Years from now, when you talk about this, and you will, be kind” (Tea and Sympathy). Vicky and Rod

The Little Things In the pursuit of happiness most often it is the simple things that provide lasting pleasure. As we rush through the complexities of life striving to attain the goal or that goal — one that glitters or one that lies in distant realms, we lose sight of and pass over those pleasures that lie close to us. We overlook their sterling qualities and practical values in building our house of happiness. Such things, accepted but too often underestimated, are the goodwill of our friends and neighbors — and the peace and security of our homes. They make up the back drop against which the drama of our daily lives unfold. These are the things which we need to leaven our busy days in a world filled with promise, anxiety and insecurity. Men must learn, in their search of happiness, to look near at hand for those things that will give them the greatest pleasure. -From the Ohio Mason FOR THE FINEST In Rug, Carpet & Furniture CLEANING CALL 419-478-0581

Lotus OES first meeting. One of our service projects this year is helping the Perrysburg Food Bank. Beth Wesley, Pam Taylor and I went and helped pack boxes for Thanksgiving that were given out to seniors in Perrysburg Township on Wednesday, November 9. It feels great to help others and it even counts towards our volunteer hours. We will be helping the Perrysburg Food Bank on the second Wednesday of each month throughout the year. As a Ways and Means project, we can help work a concession stand at the Huntington Center when they have different events, such as hockey games and concerts. Check with Linda Hendricks for dates and times, if you are available to work. The Rainbow Girls participated in a craft show on November 5. They did well and even got a few possible prospects for new members. If you know of any girl that would like to join, please contact Becky Henderly, Mother Advisor. And remember to save your bottle tabs for the girls. Take time to enjoy the Christmas season with family and friends. Remember our sick and shut-ins, and our service members. Let your beacon shine brightly, Thelma and Ray

To be courageous requires no exceptional qualifications, no magic formula, no special combination of time, place, and circumstance. It is an opportunity that sooner or later is presented to us all. Politics merely furnish one arena which imposes special tests of courage. In whatever arena of life one may meet the challenge of courage, whatever may be the sacrifices he faces if he follows his conscience—the loss of his friends, his fortune, his contentment, ever the esteem of his fellow men—each man must decide for himself the course he will follow. The stories of past courage can define that ingredient—they can teach, they can offer hope, they can provide inspiration. But they can not supply courage itself. For this each man must look into his own soul.” – John F. Kennedy

True Meaning of Christmas Just a week before Christmas I had a visitor. This is how it happened. I just finished the household chores for the night and was preparing to go to bed, when I heard a noise in the front of the house. I opened the door to the front room and to my surprise, Santa himself stepped out next to the fireplace. “What are you doing?” I started to ask. The words choked up in my throat and I saw he had tears in his eyes. His usual jolly manner was gone. Gone was the eager, boisterous soul we all know. He then answered me with a sim-

Lodge Number One, The North Pole ‘Twas the Night before Christmas, and down at the lodge Not a gavel was stirring, and in the hodge-podge Of aprons and jewels and chairs East and West You could savor the silence, most gladly divest All metal and mineral, it mattered not, Since Christmas was nigh and the coals were still hot. In the hearth of your homeplace, all Masons abed, As visions of trestleboards danced in their head; When up on the roof there arose such a clatter Our Tyler jumped up to see what was the matter! He picked up his sword and ran fast to the door, Three knocks shook the panels— he wondered ‘What for?’ He answered the knocking with raps of his own, And once the door opened he saw, with a moan Of delight it was Santa, all jolly and red Except for one notable feature instead! Upon his large finger he wore what we knew Was compass and square on a background of blue! ‘Why Santa!’ he shouted and lowered his blade ‘I see you’re a Mason!’ the Tyler relayed He looked tow’rd the Master’s most dignified chair And said, voice near trembling, ‘Most Worshipful Sir There’s a Gentleman properly clothed at the gate!’ The Master replied, ‘Let’s allow him—but wait! You tell me a Gentleman, but I don’t see His Apron beneath that red suit, YOU ARE WELCOME At the Three HIGH TWELVE CLUBS in the Toledo Area All Master Masons are invited to attend WEDNESDAYS WEST TOLEDO #165 HIGH TWELVE CLUB Zacharia’s 3455 West Alexis Every Wednesday at noon President . . . . . . . . . can it be Our visitor hasn’t been properly raised? Must we offer a test that is suitably phrased? ‘I do beg your pardon,’ ol’ Santa said quick As he pulled up his coat and displayed not a stick But a cane with engraving, two balls did appear And oh, what an apron, he wore and held dear! Adorned like the Master’s, complete with a sign Of “Lodge Number One, the North Pole” on one line! “Now let this man enter,” the Master declared, And once in the Lodge room, the Brethren all stared, For Santa was wearing a jewel not seen For many a century—there in between The fur of his coat and the splendid red collar Gleamed two golden reindeer that shone like a dollar! “It’s Donner and Blitzen, who I must confess “Are actually images brought from the West By my Warden, a craftsman like none in the world!” And with a great laugh from his bag he unfurled An ear of fine corn, and some oil from the East, “My friend I have plenty, tonight we will feast On all that is good! We are Masons, kind sir!” A murmur went throughout the Lodge, quite a stir, As presents and promises flew from his sack! This Santa, a Mason, showed he had a knack For making this Christmas the best you could glean, And soon even Deacons were laughing, they’d seen On this very night only happiness reigned! This jolly Saint Nicholas quickly explained That only a Mason could be so inclined To make all kids happy, make all people find A Christmas so special, yes, Santa was right! Merry Christmas to all, and to all a good night! - Author Unknown

ple statement, “TEACH THE CHILDREN!” I was puzzled. What did he mean? He anticipated my question and with one quick movement brought forth a miniature toy bag from behind the tree. As I stood bewildered, Santa said, “Teach the children! Teach them the old meaning of Christmas. The meaning that now-a-days Christmas has forgotten.” Santa then reached in his bag and pulled out a FIR TREE and placed it before the mantle. “Teach the children that the pure green color of the stately fir tree remains green all year round, depicting the everlasting hope of mankind, all the needles point heavenward, making it a symbol of man’s thoughts turning toward heaven.” He again reached into his bag and pulled out a brilliant STAR. “Teach the children that the star was the heavenly sign of promises long ago. God promised a Savior for the world, and the star was the sign of fulfillment of His promise.” He then reached into his bag and pulled out a CANDLE. “Teach the children that the candle symbolizes that Christ is the light of the world, and when we see this great light we are reminded of He who displaces the darkness.” Once again he reached into his bag and removed a WREATH and placed it on the tree. “Teach the children that the wreath symbolizes the real nature of love. Real love never ceases. Love is one continuous round of affection.” He then pulled from his bag an ORNAMENT of himself. “Teach the children that I, Santa Claus, symbolize the generosity and good will we feel during the month of December.” He then brought out a HOLLY LEAF. “Teach the children that the holly plant represents immortality. It represents the crown of thorns worn by our Savior. The red holly berries represent the blood shed by Him. Next he pulled from his bag a GIFT and said, “Teach the children that God so loved the world that He gave his only begotten son.” Thanks be to God for his unspeakable gift. Santa then reached in his bag and pulled out a CANDY CANE and hung it on the tree. “Teach the children that the candy cane represents the shepherds’ crook. The crook on the staff helps to bring back strayed sheep to the flock. The candy cane is the symbol that we are our brother’s keeper.” He reached in again and pulled out an ANGEL. “Teach the children that it was the angels that heralded in the glorious news of the Savior’s birth. The angels sang Glory to God in the highest, on earth peace and good will toward men.” Suddenly I beard a soft twinkling sound, and from his bag be pulled out a BELL. “Teach the children that as the lost sheep are found by the sound of the bell, it should ring mankind to the fold. The bell symbolizes guidance and return. Santa looked back and was pleased. He looked back at me and I saw that the twinkle was back in his eyes. He said, “Remember, teach the children the true meaning of Christmas and do not put me in the center, for I am but a humble servant of the One that is, and I bow down to worship him, our LORD, our GOD.”

What Is Light? What is light? The basic dictionary will describe it in two ways: one being the object to which an object can become visible. The other being subjective in which a thought, idea, perspective or state of mind can be obtained or transmitted. Light is often used as a metaphor, especially when it comes to knowledge: “The light finally came on for the student,” “The light is on but nobody is home.” Somewhere along the way we forgot what the simplest meanings could mean by our many symbols within our organization. Granted, we have many symbols that are brought up by our LEOs to try to give a basic understanding to our newer members who haven’t had the opportunity to research the many volumes of knowledge of what our organization is. Throughout the lectures of the first three degrees the candidate is shown symbols that have meaning in both operative and speculative Masonry, but when the candidate is told the speculative side, a thought process starts to elude that there are many symbols in Freemasonry and each has its own meaning or meanings. That is, except for “light.” We have all sought light when we entered a lodge for the first time and we ask for light in our degrees, but has anyone asked for the meaning of light? Or is it just another figure of speech? Light is something both physical and nonphysical; in speculative Masonry it can mean both the warmth of fellowship and the radiance of knowledge. How does one seek light in Freemasonry in the 21st century? Or more importantly what is the meaning of light in the 21st century? Again we turn back to the dictionary to “light” the way. “Light” as defined in scientific terms is nothing more than radiant energy, to which light is an agent of illumination. “Light is also the root word in “enlighten;” which is to describe instruction or education, as well as in spiritual or religious terms which the word “enlightenment” comes into play. To the Hindu’s and Buddhists “Enlightenment” means pure and unqualified knowledge, but is this not one of the many goals of men who join our organization? Not so much in religious terms but a true knowledge brought forth by illuminating our path on our journey of life. Light comes in many forms; it comes from the literally meaning from the sun, candle, incandescent light, or any other form of radiant illumination. To the figurative meaning of awareness, education, revelation and self-realization. However in the lodge it needs to become something more than just another symbol in the lecture, it needs to become something tangible. The light both a candidate and brother seeks, needs to be the cement to create a strong bond between brethren. In the centuries that our organization has existed we have seen terrible and challenging times, this is by no means as severe as in the past but these are challenging times nonetheless. We may have elder brethren who may have lost pensions in the wake of mergers or bankruptcies. We may have brethren who may have seen the loss of employment due to outsourcing or company relocation. We may have brethren who may have seen the loss of dear family members and are coping with that loss of personal stability. In these times the outlook looks bleak and dim, however there is a light, a great and brilliant light waiting to be lit. The light in question is our own brethren, we all come from different backgrounds and

occupations. Knowledge is one of the greatest strengths we as humans have, and the sharing of that knowledge in difficult times will make good men greater. For is it not written: “Give a man a fish and he’ll eat for a day, teach a man to fish and he’ll eat for a lifetime.” Many young men join our fraternity to become better and they need help, they need to see the light. When a young man joins a lodge and he knows so very few members and all he gets out of the meetings are lectures or the general business of the lodge, he becomes bored and disenfranchised, and eventually quits. My brothers, it is time to turn on the lights, ignite the fires within, illuminate the true path of righteousness in the forest of moral degeneration. We need to become the cement to build our lodges to make them strong once again. To use the immortal words on John F. Kennedy “And so, my fellow Freemasons, ask not what your lodge can do for you; ask what you can do for your lodge.” We need to rebuild ourselves, we need to reinvent ourselves, we need to see what and who we are with new eyes and in a new light. To do so we need to look at the bricks and mortar of a lodge and see what they are. In operative masonry if bricks are too dry you give them water so they do not dry out the cement when building a wall. Also if the cement is too fine you add sand to tighten the mix. Such as the case with speculative Masonry, if a candidate needs to learn the degree work a brother will step in and help him along. Or in the case an elderly brother needs his sidewalk shoveled or a ride to the lodge meeting another brother steps in. But what about when a brother needs to fix a hole in his house? Certainly there must be a brother somewhere with that knowledge. What about a brother who needs to purchase a good suit or tuxedo? Many new brethren never wore a good suit before and don’t know where to look. What about a new/younger brother who needs to start investing in a retirement fund? Like many people his age his parents had pension plans in their workplaces, now pension plans are left up to the employee. So where does a brother in our lodge turn to find the proper plans? Even our elder members could use help, technology is such a part of our lives and is getting more complex every day. Where would one of our senior members go to learn how to use basic e-mail features or to create documents on the computer? Our younger members have that knowledge and think nothing of it like its always been there. It is up to us to help each other to rebuild our lodges to create a stronghold of knowledge and a beacon to others who are in search of light. We need to be carriers of the torch in the darkness, and the lodge needs to be that safe house in the storm, only then will good men become better men.

How Bro. Brian Habegger’s unique idea is helping familes in their time of need Brian Habegger’s Masonic roots run deep. His father, Doug Habegger, has been active in many Masonic bodies, including serving as Illustrious Grand Master of Royal and Select Masons of Ohio. So when Brian’s grandmother called him after been told her $8000 savings wasn’t enough for a pre-arranged funeral, he decided to do something about the burden funeral expenses can place on a family. The result was Habegger Funeral Services, an innovative 501(c)3 non-profit organization offering economical funeral alternatives to help families in their time of need without creating financial hardships.

The key to this is the relationships he has built with nearly 100 churches in the Toledo area to conduct sameday visitation and services at the church, thereby allowing him to avoid the facility expenses of a traditional funeral home. This unique approach enables him to offer a comprehensive package… including removal and care of the deceased, embalming and dressing for viewing, a 20-guage steel casket, a full funeral service, transportation to the grave, committal service, preparation of an obituary and death certificate, and the services of a funeral director and staff… for less than $3000.

They also offer a cremation package for $795. Now operating out of a funeral home on Consaul St. in East Toledo, Bro. Habegger formerly managed the Wright-Habegger funeral home in Grand Rapids, and is a member of Grand Rapids Lodge #289, where he will be installed as Worshipful Master this month.

BIRCH RUN RUN FUN

Page 23

“We’re gonna need a bigger bus...” Actually, there was plenty of room on the bus for the ladies on the Scottish Rite’s Birch Run Run shopping trip. However, as the center picture shows, it was necessary to utilize the luggage storage space under the bus for the return trip. This was due in no small part to the sustained efforts of Angie Dominique (above right), who captured the

coveted crown of Shopping Queen (with the able assistance of Shopping Queen-in-Training Ashton). Meanwhile, Kay Winnie’s frugality earned her the Penny Pincher Award. One thing that all seemed to agree on was that the ladies enjoyed a day filled with fun and friendship as they worked feverishly to empty their husband’s bank accounts.

You’re Invited to the Scottish Rite Ladies Auxiliary Christmas Party and Auction The Scottish Rite Ladies Auxiliary will have its annual Christmas Party and Auction at its regular meeting on December 13th at noon at the Holiday Inn French Quarter in Perrysburg, and you’re invited! Please bring a gift worth at least $10.00. The big thing is the wrapping. The fancier the better. The proceeds will be donated to Scottish Rite Charities. Mike Shobe has graciously accepted the role of Auctioneer. So bring yourself, a beautifully wrapped gift and a guest who will enjoy the day. The meal is $16.00 and reservations are needed. Reservations can be made to Anita Giles (agiles@dendorah.org), and all reservations made must be paid for. Sincerely, Margaret Wuwert, Vice President

Secretary’s Report

What a great day we had travelling to Birch Run and Frankenmuth. The ladies were a hoot! I believe that they all had a good time. I had to go into several stores and drag them out to arrive home in Mike Shobe, 33o time.

Just kidding. The winner of the “Shopping Queen Tiara” was Angela Dominique. She and Ashton literally melted her credit card. Again, kidding. Let me know if you want me to set another trip up next fall. I’ll bring more mimosas…..

“Breathtaking!”

I thought that the reunion and banquet was as breathtaking as

promised. I want to thank those who braved the elements and marched in the Holiday Parade. Great degree work, a nice prime rib dinner and a live band to complete the evening. Your Valley added 38 new candidates that day! We want to welcome them into our fold. It is our goal now to keep you active and enjoy the events and festivities that we have to offer. I have a limited number

of the commemorative jewels left at the office for sale. I have to return whatever I don’t sell by January.

Family Holiday

The Family Holiday Gathering will again be held at the Al-Mars Bowling Lanes in Bowling Green, Ohio. The times are 1:00-4:00 p.m. Just $5.00 per person will get you and your family 3 hours

of bowling, including shoes, a pizza lunch and a visit from St. Nick. Last year was a “ball” and it promises to be again this year. I hope that all of you have a great Holiday Season. And as always, take care of yourself and I wish a speedy recovery for our shut-ins. Mike

Each of the 38 members of the Fall Reunion Class was presented with a special commemorative medal, as a lasting symbol of his introduction to the Scottish Rite on this very impressive occasion.
