WELL-ROASTED RIGHTWORSHIPFUL

“In just a couple of weeks, Right Worshipful Brother Mark Bowlick will conclude his third and final year as a District Deputy Grand Master, and we have gathered together here tonight to celebrate that fact.” With these words, Master of Ceremonies Bill Markin kicked off nearly two hours of stories, insults and embarrassing recollections of the life and Masonic Career of RWB Bowlick. Among the more than a dozen Masons and dignitaries who rose to the occasion were his brother, Past Potentate Joe Bublick (above left), and Valley of Toledo Secretary Mike Shobe (right), who paid tribute to RWB Bowlick’s alter ego of Ramone the Cabana Boy by presenting him with an appropriate steward’s apron.

District Clay Shoot Is On Target

In case you’re wondering what the posters on the podium are all about (or even if you’re not wondering), they’re promoting the Shrine Safe Halloween event, on October 31st from 1-3 p.m. There will be various units, clubs, lodges and other Masonic organizations on hand passing out candy to the kids, and the public is welcome. Why not spread the word among your family and friends with small children?

A beautiful day just added to the fun at the 11th District’s Annual Clay Shoot, held Saturday, September 24 at the WR Hunt Club in Clyde. Congrats go to the winning team from Toledo Fort Industry and high shooter Jim Krispin.

Tyle a While?

There are still openings for volunteers to serve as Tylers for the Grand Lodge in Sandusky October 14-15th. Any Master Mason not carrying a proxy or a voting member of Grand Lodge is eligible to serve. If you’d like to take a shift, contact Grand Tyler Robert G. Sickelbaugh at rgsickelbaugh@bex.net.

With Grand Lodge Officers of Michigan performing the EA Degree, and the Grand Lodge Officers of Ohio putting on the Fellowcraft Degree, Ohio Michigan Friendship Day not only offered the chance to see some excellent degree work, but also to tour and enjoy the beautiful Detroit Masonic Temple.

We have already started out the fall reading three new petitions, so it seems that we will continue to remain busy with degree work for the remainder of my tenure as Master. It’s a good problem to have! It was good to see so many of you on the sidelines for our first meeting in September and I hope to continue to see good turn outs moving forward. Our picnic at the end of August was successful! Thank you all who came to it. We got a little rain and wind, but it cleared up nicely and didn’t appear to dampen any spirits. Unfortunately, there was some confusion as to the date and time of the picnic, since some thought that it wasn’t until the following day (Sunday). Hopefully, communications will be better in the future. Fraternally, Rick Crow, WM

We now only meet once a month for stated meetings and therefore the time commitment for our officers has been reduced significantly. REMARKS October is commonly associated with the season of autumn in the Northern hemisphere and spring in the Southern hemisphere, where it is the seasonal equivalent to April in the northern hemisphere and vice versa. In the western world, October also is commonly associated with Halloween. The Past Master Degree is an honorary degree usually conferred on the newly-elected master of a lodge prior to his installation into office. In this degree, necessary instructions are conferred respecting the various ceremonies of the order and the overall requirements of a master. The Past Master Degree, as conferred by a lodge of Past Masters, has many similarities to the Past Master Degree as conferred by a chapter of Royal Arch Masons. However, when conferred by a RAM Chapter, the candidate is a “virtual” Past Master and is not entitled to the any of the rights and privileges of brethren who have actually been installed and presided over a symbolic lodge. On October 19, Oliver H. Perry Lodge will be privileged to honor its Past Masters. There will be special refreshments following the stated meeting. At 6:00 p.m., on October 19, weather permitting, we will gather by the Catawba Island Cemetery gravesite of Ira S. Dutcher, the lodge’s first Master, to honor our Past Masters who have been called from labor to eternal rest. (Continued on Page 6, Column 3)

Genoa Lodge yourself and your officers, Genoa Lodge wouldn’t be who we are today! I thank you for making my job as Master of your lodge, and serving you, such an enjoyable and enlightening experience. As the year has progressed, we have not only set a plan, but we have followed through to secure the future and welfare of our lodge. Communication, enlightenment through education, and transparency has been the theme this year, and I want to thank each and every one of you for being part of that. We have increased in membership, and fiscally we have operated the year in the black, all while making much needed renovations (including air-conditioning, and club room as well as bathroom renovations). We have contributed financially to the community, and if it wasn’t for the dedicated work from our Stewards, we wouldn’t have been able to provide complimentary meals before almost every meeting. Our trestle board continues to be full brothers, as we have degree work and guest speakers scheduled throughout the next few months. Please mark your calendars for the upcoming events in October, which are listed at the end of this article. Keep an eye out in your emails for our weekly updates, our website www.GenoaLodge433.com to see what’s next on our agenda, or listen to our recorded weekly updates at (419) 836-0500. Brethren, once again it has been a true honor to be part of Genoa Lodge, and serve you as the 2016 Worshipful Master. I am not only excited, but I also look forward to what the future holds for OUR Lodge! That’s all, brethren. Please keep our distressed brothers and military personnel in your thoughts and prayers! Rubicon Lodge Thursday, November 3, 7:00 p.m. – 11th Masonic District Meeting and Election of Officers at Zenobia Shrine. Saturday, November 19, 5:00 p.m. – Dinner. Saturday, November 19, 6:00 p.m. – Installation of Officers, followed by refreshments in Harmony Hall. REMARKS Here I am writing this column with mixed emotions. The end of the year is near and the light at the end of the tunnel is bright and clear. The light is green to proceed on a clear track and as Mason’s following the sun, the moon and the stars in the heavens on that journey we take each and every day of our lives. We need to remember our obligation(s) and always give thanks to our great creator. The time is now and we need to be strong and act boldly, walking upright through our stations of life. Brethren, there are so many wonderful things I have experienced since you all have elected me Master of our lodge. This journey would not be the same if it were not for all of you and I want to thank you for this amazing journey. When writing this article, the experiences will continue with a visitation to my home lodge of Laurel Lodge #237 F&AM in Laurel Springs, New Jersey. How I wanted so much for you all to take this journey with me. I am sure it will be nothing less than spectacular, along with attending a special dinner reception for the district officers in New Jersey. Upon returning, I go right to Atlanta, Georgia, on business, with the expectations of visiting two and possibly three Blue Lodges in the Atlanta area, time permitting, returning just in time for R.W.B. Bowlick’s reception. Rubicon members, you all need to be commended for your support of your lodge, the 11th Masonic District, the Grand Lodge, our Grand Master and last, but not least, to RWB Mark E. Bowlick for his dedication to the 11th Masonic District. RWB Mark, thank you so much for what you have given to this great fraternity and the support you have given me and the officers for the past year. Here we are in October (can you believe it?), and you all know what that means: Yep, Ohio GRAND LODGE and the election of a new Grand Master. Dates to mark your calendars are October 14, 15 and 16. Where? Kalahari in (Continued in Column 5)

Rubicon Lodge Sandusky. For reservations call (877) 525-2427 or (419) 433-7200. Being October, dues are coming due and with that our Grand Lodge has adopted a new dues card. It will be PLASTIC like the Scottish Rite and will be issued once. Your name and Masonic number will be on the card with a scanner bar that can be electronically scanned, when necessary. So do not be alarmed and remember we will only get this card to use year after year. Dues can be paid at the lodge prior to regular stated meetings or mailed to our lodge secretary Rubicon’s election of officers will be next month. Brethren, please remember and keep in your prayers our sick and distress, Never forget 9/11 and those who gave their all, pray that our country gets through these most stressful times. Fraternally, Eric

Damascus/Collingwood is as close to home as it gets for the next eight years. Please note: you must have a new valid dues card to attend the session. Many Masonic merchandise vendors will be on hand as well. Saturday things clear out around noon, so consider reserving a room for Saturday night and bring the family in for a great time together. On Saturday, October 22, we’ll have a Potluck/Family Game Night. Bring the family and kids, your favorite games, and a dish to share. This is not only a great night for the kids and wives to interact, but also a great follow up event for our open house. Tuesday, November 1, is our annual meeting, and election of officers. DUES are due on November 1! Please fold up and save this fine publication, then log on to www.dc643.com and view your options. You do not need to have a Paypal account, if you click the link that says “pay with debit or credit card. You will find the link to online payment in the “contact us section. If you need help, give the Secretary or myself a ring. Stated meetings will include educational presentations and streamlined business. We don’t read minutes anymore, we post them, so get there early. We don’t come to lodge to do business, we do business so that we can come to lodge. Doors typically open at 5:30 for fellowship. Our Senior Deacon suggested we’d look back at this point in our lodge history as a golden age, but a lodge “golden age can last six months or 60 years. Come to lodge, meet some new brothers and get involved. Let’s make this the Masonic experience we all signed up for, together.

Oliver H. Perry Since most of us have probably gone trick or treating (albeit a few years ago) at Halloween time, the following will hopefully bring some fond memories. The Goblin There’s a goblin as green as a goblin can be. Who is sitting outside and is waiting for me. When he knocked on my door and said softly, Can THE WOLF PACK come and play, I answered, "No thank you. Now please go away!" But the goblin, as green as a goblin can be, Is still sitting outside and is waiting for me. Trick or treat, trick or treat, Give us something good to eat. Give us candy, give us cake, Give us something sweet to take. Give us cookies, fruit and gum, Hurry up and give us some. You had better do it quick, Or we’ll surely play a trick. Trick or treat, trick or treat, Give us something good to eat. The Wolf Pack and I want to wish all brethren a safe and happy October. Don’t forget October fest, and watch out for bikers as I am a biker also. So Mote It Be, Ryan C Orosz Worshipful Master

Barton Smith We have several events coming up, so check the calendar for activities. Notice that on December 1, we are bringing back our annual Christmas party. If you have kids or grandkids that you would like to bring to the party, please let either myself or John Tansey know by Thanksgiving how many, so that we can have some presents for them. Remember that Grand Lodge is the weekend of October 13 through 15 in Sandusky. Why not plan on coming over for a day, as they are looking for Tylers for the weekend? Have a wonderful fall and plan to attend lodge and see what is going on WM Gary

REMARKS Greetings Companions, The first stated meeting for the month of October is the 5th and is “York Rite Night,” with a steak dinner. Please remember that reservations must be made in for this dinner. Companions need to contact Companion Tom Abner at (419) 346-5913 or by email at ftmeigschapter29@gmail.com by October 4, if you would like to join us for dinner. The cost is $10.00. Companions, the officers are looking forward to continued fellowship with all companions in month of October, so please come out and join us at our two stated meetings of October 5 and 19. As a reminder, the Grand Chapter Convocation is slated for October 5 through 8, at Kalahari in Sandusky. Also, remember to mark your calendars early as Ft. Meigs’ inspection will take place January 18, in the Mark Master Degree, with dinner. Now that summer activities are winding down, the time is right to once again attend your Blue Lodge and be active in your chapter. Lastly, keep our sick and distressed companions and their family members in your thoughts and prayers, as well as those who serve vigilantly to protect our freedoms each day. Remember, it is not what your chapter can do for you, companions, but what each and every one of the companions can do for your chapter. God bless all and keep you safe. REMARKS Companions, Given the timing of the submission of articles for the Masonic Bulletin, I was not able to report some of the following until the October issue. The Michigan York Rite Grand Sessions took place from August 17 through August 20, in beautiful Bay City, Michigan, for the second year in a row. I attended and participated in the One Hundred Sixty-Eighth Annual Convocation of the Grand Chapter of Michigan Royal Arch Masons on Wednesday, August 17. Mt. Vernon Chapter No. 37 is once again well represented in the Michigan Grand Chapter, as our own Howard Duke was elected and installed as the Most Excellent Grand High Priest, Grand Chapter Royal Arch Masons of Michigan, Eldin Miller was elected and installed as the Right Excellent Grand Royal Arch Captain of the State of Michigan and Robert B. Powers, Sr. was appointed Royal Arch DDI at Large for the State of Michigan. Congratulations one and all—may this next year be a great one because of your many efforts. Mt. Vernon Chapter No. 37 will support you in any way that we can. The raffle drawing for the winning ticket for the Henry Golden Boy LeverAction .22 Rifle, our most recent fund raiser, was made by my wife Sue, on Wednesday August 24, just prior to the lodge temple board meeting with several companions witnessing and officiating. The reward you get from the officers of your lodge by putting in the time and labor yourself only to be returned tenfold. Paragon Lodge values. I just hope that all the Past Masters can feel the same way that I do and want to come to lodge and help and teach the younger generation about everything that has gotten us to this point. I know that we are all so very busy, but I feel it’s very important that we take the time to meet and enjoy the fellowship that Masonry offers. When a new member joins, he needs to see there are lots of brothers looking forward to his success during the journey that he is about to take. These are lifelong lessons that only a Freemason will understand. With that said, thank you for allowing me to sit in that chair.

I think that made Halloween seem preferable. The idea of having pumpkins and costumes and parties seemed much more appealing than burning down your neighborhood. – Lisa Morton

PERRYSBURG, OHIO

THINK OUTSIDE THE BOX

Greetings Nobles: It’s hard to believe the Autumn months are upon us, and soon we’ll be experiencing the beauties of the colorful leaves, crisp air and holiday preparations. October also signals in a very busy month for Zenobia Shrine Masons, and in fact all Freemasons in Ohio. This is the time of year when all of the Grand Masonic Bodies hold their annual meetings, and those involved in the York Rite will be on the move much of the month. As if that weren’t enough, there also are numerous District Deputy Grand Master and District Education Officer installations scheduled throughout our area as well. We wish each and every one of these brothers safe travels, and offer our congratulations and best wishes to all the new officers throughout Ohio. Other events to put in your calendars are the Ladies’ Style Show on Saturday, October 1, at the U.T. Radisson, and the Children’s Safe Halloween event on Sunday, October 30, at Zenobia. The style show promises to be a banner event, and the Safe Halloween will be a “must attend experience” for all kids. Not only will it offer a safe venue in which they’ll be able to trick or treat, but it also will be a great way for the units and clubs to participate together to support this fun family activity. The stated meeting on October 13 will be considered an Officer Move-Up Night. Due to the Grand Lodge of Ohio Annual Communication occurring at the same time, many of us will be out of town that evening. As a result, the stated meeting will be run by a “skeleton crew” of officers. Please Nobles, if you’re in town, make it a point to attend the meeting that evening and support Noble Brian Ramsey and the other officers who are able to be there. Finally, the results of the special election are in. We offer our most sincere congratulations to the following new officers, who were installed at the stated meeting: High Priest and Prophet: Noble Dan E. Slavin Oriental Guide: Noble Boyd E. Durain 1st Ceremonial Master: Noble Isaac D. Demarest 2nd Ceremonial Master: Noble Ty J. Stout Please make it a point to congratulate these Nobles the next time you see them. They do a lot of great things for Zenobia, and their knowledge, enthusiasm, dedication and commitment is sure to benefit Zenobia Shrine for many years to come. As always Nobles, we thank you for your commitment to a positive and enthusiastic Zenobia. Remember, that the strength of our organization derives from Freemasonry and Shrine working together, and thinking a little outside the box. Potentate Charlie

CHAPLAIN’S H A T

Dear Nobles: Grace and peace to you and yours in the name of the Great Creator. How majestic is our Creator God. Each season moves into the other and each has a distinctive flavor all its own. Here we are in October.

The leaves are starting to change and soon the landscape will display the colors of fall. The nights will cool and we will begin to feel a change in the weather. Such is the eternal plan of He who created us. And while the seasons come and go, the work of our Shrine/Mason obligations continues. All around us, like the beauty of the changing seasons, are beautiful children who have been broken by accidents or physical challenges. Our Creator God has given us the opportunity to be the means whereby these little ones can

MEET YOUR NEW SECOND CEREMONIAL MASTER In May, 2003, Ty J. Stout joined Brainard Lodge #336 as well as Zenobia Shriners. Twelve years later in 2015, he also joined Genoa Lodge #433 as a Plural Member, and is a proud member of all three organizations. Since joining Zenobia, Ty has been active in many clubs and units. He is a member of Fremont Shrine Club, and served the Club as its President for two years. Additionally, as an active member of Hillbilly Clan #75, he also served for one year as Raban of the Clan. Widely recognized for his abilities and willingness to contribute, Ty has served on various Potentates’ A-Teams on five occasions, and as Chief Aide for two years. Furthermore he serves as Ambassador to the Findlay Shrine Club, and

is an active member of the Clowns as “Lumbear”. He is a regular and active participant in the Circus and parades, and always enjoys delighting kids with balloon tying. Ty and his lady Alisha have been married 13 years, and reside in Fremont, with their beloved Labradors, Duke and Dutch. In his professional life, Ty has worked for the City of Fremont Parks Department as a heavy equipment operator since 2001. Noble Ty Stout’s blood runs deep with Zenobia, as he has been mentored by his grandfather, his father and his uncle. In his spare time, Ty enjoys hunting, fishing, riding his motorcycle and tinkering in his garage. He looks forward to serving the Nobility of Zenobia, and to helping our temple flourish.

Safe Halloween at Zenobia on October 30. Contact Noble Troy Hawkins to have a spot to participate at troy@hawkinslaw.us We will look for you at the stated meeting on October 13. Dues notices were sent out in September. Everyone who has a balance for 2017, should have received a statement. If you have prepaid or are a Total Life member, you will not receive a notice. Dues are payable by the end of the year. This year you will be receiving a 2017 sticker to place on your dues card and you will not receive a new dues card. If you have any questions concerning dues, please call the find solace. He has placed in our hands the tool of healing. He has called men and women to the healing task and He has called us to support those whose hands claim the healing touch. As you look around you, there are those to whom the care of Shrine/Masonry can be extended. Like the withered leaves of trees we have the opportunity to paint the bright color of hope upon each life we touch. Peace, Hugh W. Bowland, D. Min. Chaplain Zenobia Shrine PS: What day is it?

OBIA CAMPERS N ZE

Greetings from all of your Zenobia Campers! Only three more months until the new year! Scary, isn’t it! But our camping season goes on. Our last Camp-out took place on August 11 thru 13. Our Wagon Masters (Dave and Pat) led us to Sauder Village campground near Archbold. We enjoyed the village, had the use of their pool and their meeting room at the inn. Yes, some of the rain showers sent us rushing for shelter, but as quickly as they poped up, they went away! AND of course, we did visit their Barn Resturant!! I believe we had 22 campers in attendance, two couples stayed at the inn, and nine units. Our next Camp-out was at Sonny’s Camp Ground, September 8 through 11. It is near Sauders. I am sure that Steve and Diane had an exciting event planned! We welcome any Shriners with a camping unit to join us. We are a growing unit and would like for you to give us a try! We do meet year around. Until next month, keep the CAMPFIRES burning! Rod

On way to Catawba, we stopped by Foster Body Shop in Fremont. We swapped stories and walked down memory lane with Barb. We had a lot of fun times and met a lot of nice Shrine Masons along the way. For those newer members, you are experiencing “fun” and building memories that you, too, will look back on, so enjoy the ride. Could you imagine a strong Ohio State fan singing the Michigan fight song? Ask Illustrious Sir Keith Tuttle why he was forced to do so. The Pote’s bus trip to Cincinnati was a huge success. Thanks to Illustrious Sir Jack Storey for making his specialty beverage. We took a river boat cruise and toured the Shrine Hospital. If you have never visited one of our 22 hospitals, please do so. It is truly a very rewarding experience and makes you feel proud to be a Shriner. A tip of the fez to those who transport our children, as well as those who sit on the hospital boards. Your dedication is

CHICAGO HOSPITAL SHRINELINES Green Bay Packers Celebrate ‘Shrine Night’ For the 66th year, the Green Bay Packers have presented an annual major gift to Shriners Hospitals for Children - Chicago. This year’s gift was given at Midwest Shrine Night at Lambeau Field, Green Bay, Wisconsin. Members of Tripoli and Beja Shrines received the gift of $38,500, bringing the Green Bay Packers’ total giving to our hospital over the years to $3,896,000. Midwest Shrine Night, scheduled during the Packers’ first pre-season home opener, is a celebration of the historic association between the Green Bay Packer franchise and SHC - Chicago, which began in 1950, as an annual Shrine game between the Chicago Bears and Packers, sponsored by Tripoli and Medinah Temples in Milwaukee. The Packers have maintained their association with our hospital annually since that first game and are nearing the $4-million mark in giving to our hospital. A franchise owned by the citizens of the Green Bay com-

munity, the Packer organization stands as one of the great charitable enterprises of the National Football League, and we are delighted to be partners with so noble an establishment. We extend our appreciation to Medinah and Tripoli Temples for launching this long-running event, so important to our hospital. And we thank Tripoli and Beja Temples, who maintain strong links with the Packers, nurtured annually through this Shrine game. But, most of all, we salute Mark Murphy and the Green Bay Packers for their generous philanthropic vision, which touches the lives of thousands of children, from Wisconsin, across the midwest, and throughout the country, who benefit from their generosity through care at our hospital. The celebration included a tailgate party, hosted by Beja Shrine. Nobles released dozens of balloons following the National Anthem. The Packers defeated the Cleveland Browns in the home opener, 17-11.

POTENTATE’S TRIP TO CINCINNATI HOSPITAL

Fifty-five Nobles, Ladies and guests supported Zenobia at the Cincinnati Shriners Children’s Hospital Open House during the Potentate’s trip.

All “decked” out to enjoy the scenery on the riverboat cruise.

The paddleboat dinner cruise on the Ohio River was a much anticipated event.

Inside or outside, everyone had a great time.

Visiting the New Riff Distillery was a hit.

Rumor has it that Joyce Fries had the best time ever.

The musical entertainment played to a full house.

Dinner on the paddleboat cruise was a real treat.

Hillbilly Notes

Page 14 Kilee wanted to do something for Cincinnati Shriners because of everything they do. That is when she started a foundation called Kilee Give Back. All of the money raised goes to the hospital. The first year the foundation raised over $70,000.

The Roadrunners had a good turnout for their Annual Appreciation Picnic.

Roadrunners Last year we drove 76 trips to the hospitals, and so far this year we’ve driven 34 trips to the Shrine Hospitals. Twenty-three drivers have volunteered to drive our patients this year.

We’ve welcomed four new drivers, too. We had a few drivers retire from driving. They will be missed. Some of them had been driving for over 10 years, while others over 15 years. They all say they have seen miracles performed by the Shrine hospitals during the years, watching our children grow up and doing things like other children. If you see any of our Road-

Greetings All, Findlay SC wants to make certain that all area Shriners are kept informed of what is taking place in and around their club and Zenobia. In an effort to do so, we will be sending our newsletter out via e-mail. Those who do not have e-mail will still receive their newsletter via USPS. We encourage membership with the club, but it is not required. We intend to implement this by year’s end. If I do not have your e-mail address, please get it to me. The Findlay SC / K of C Banquet is coming soon and is OPEN to ALL Shriners. This is the longest running such event between these two organizations in the United States. It will be held in St. Michael’s East on November 5. This is the 75th Anniversary. There will be dancing, entertainment and a night to remember. The Bistro will be catering, a cash bar and cost is $40 per person. Tickets are available now. All Nobles are invited to join us at an upcoming Findlay Shrine Club meeting on the first Saturday of each month at 9 a.m., after the Blue Lodge breakfast in the Findlay Masonic Complex, 303 Osborn Avenue. Call Boyd / 419-422-9222, Jim / 419-8946347 or Chuck / 419-293-3485.

October 2016

CLOWNS Hidey-Ho Nobles, What a great season it has been. We have had parades, ballooning and hours of spending time just being silly, as we have had fun with kids, adults and everyone in between. The Clowns have traveled many miles and have averaged eight Clowns per parade. Not that many years ago we were lucky to have four. That shows you just how much fun and satisfaction you can have with such a great group of men, Masons and Nobles. Our August meeting was a picnic with the Ladies Shrine joining us. This was well attended and fun was had by all. Many more events are on the schedule and we look forward to promoting the Shrine’s philanthropy. We enjoy having fellow Nobles join us at our meetings for a good time of fun and fellowship, just call so we have a count for meals. We meet on the third Thursday of each month at the Clown building, 1545 Payne Avenue, Findlay. Doors open by 5:30 p.m. and we eat at 6:30 p.m., business meeting follows. All are welcome to attend, please let us know if you’re coming so we have enough food. Call Steve / 419-422-9222, Jim / 419-8946347 or Chuck / 419-293-3485.

WHAT’S NEW IN ERIE! Erie Gives— Syria and Osiris Top Donors For the second year in a row, the largest donation made to any non-profit during Erie Gives Day was from Syria Shriners in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania, in the amount of $103,000. This generous gift, along with others including a $52,000 donation from Osiris Shriners in Wheeling, West Virginia, helped us finish second among the nonprofit participants again this year. Shriners Hospitals for Children - Erie received it’s match from the Erie Community Foundation on Friday, August 26. The

total amount raised was $241,173. Thank you to Syria, Osiris

and all of our affiliated temples for helping to make Erie Gives Day such a great success!

Rain Didn’t Stop the Ride and Rally On Saturday, August 13, Lake Erie Freedom Chapter, Victory Motorcycle Club along with OffRoad Express hosted the 7th Annual Ride and Rally poker run and party. The poker run registration was held at the medical center where the bikers assembled to begin their ride. There was no shortage of bikes and there were riders from both the Zem Zem Cycle Corps and the Syria Cycle Corps. The ride was followed by a rally at Zem Zem Shriners that included five bands and lots of good food from Odis 12. For additional information, contact: Greg Hall (814) 875-8782.

Wednesday, October 5, 7:30 p.m. – Stated Meeting. Wednesday, October 12, 7:30 p.m. – Stated Meeting: Inspection Practice. REMARKS Greetings Companions, As we begin the 10th month of the year, which has a prefix meaning the number “8” (October was the eighth month in the old Roman calendar), our first stated meeting of October is the 5th, and is York Rite Night with a steak dinner beginning at 6:00. Please remember that dinner reservations ($10.00) are needed, so contact Tom Abner at twabner65@gmail.com (419) 346-5913 or myself at tommydyr@hotmail.com (480) 231-5270. The second stated meeting in October will be on the 12th, at 7:30, and will focus on getting ready for our Arch inspection (SM) in December. Interestingly enough, the following day will be the 224th anniversary of the laying of the cornerstone for the White House, which took place October 13, 1792. While George Washington didn’t live to see its completion, John and Abigail Adams were able to move in eight years later. Now that summer activities are winding down, the time is right to once again attend your Blue Lodge and be active in your council, while putting the word out to our Royal Arch companions that Cryptic Masonry offers yet more light. Lastly, keep our sick and distressed companions and their family members in your thoughts and prayers, as well as those who serve vigilantly to protect our freedoms each day. God bless each of you and yours, Tom Dewire, IM

We anticipate anywhere between five and six candidates this year, one of our largest increases in a while. Once chapter brings them through, we will be very busy. Also, as we prepare for Rite Illustrious Companion Hill’s year, we encourage companions to think of ways that we may support him exclusively through our council. All ideas are welcome. Additionally, mentioned in our past meeting was a consideration of amending our bylaws to reflect an increase in dues. Please note, no companion made a formal motion; however, conversation ensued pertaining to finances. This topic does necessitate future further discussion. Lastly, I remind companions that if they have not submitted their dues yet, to please do so. Even if you cannot afford to make the payment, or you are out of the area, please contact the secretary. In other news, we are preparing for Grand Council, as the annual convocation is quickly approaching. Business will transact on October 3, at the Kalahari Resort in Sandusky, Ohio. I plan to attend Monday only. If any other companion wishes to ride along, please contact me. The next stated meeting of Bowling Green Council will be on October 13, at 8:30 p.m. Fraternally yours, Kenneth J. Rutski Illustrious Master

Royal Arch Eighth District REMARKS Companions, It was great to see a full house for our September dinner meeting at the Black Pearl. My thanks to everyone for taking time to come out. October seems to be just as busy with Grand Chapter at Kalahari Sandusky, Ohio, October 5 and 6, and our first Royal Arch School on October 27 at Oak Harbor. Hope to see you there. John

MEETINGS AND EVENTS Saturday, October 22, 9:00 a.m. – Special Meeting: Breakfast. Saturday, October 22, 10:30 a.m. – Stated Meeting: Business and Open Book Practice. REMARKS Companions: Please note the change of date of the October meeting. As I am a Deputy Division Commander for the 6th Division, Knights Templar of Ohio, I am required to attend the Grand Conclave which falls on our stated meeting date. Therefore, I have requested a dispensation to change the meeting date. I am trying a Saturday meeting, to see if we can get more participation in our meeting. I plan on changing the meeting date for the November meeting to a Saturday also. The October meeting will be proceeded by a breakfast at the temple. Breakfast will be scrambled eggs, sausage, pancakes, juice, coffee and milk. There will be no charge for the breakfast, but a free-will collection can will be available. Please come out and have breakfast and attend the meeting. We also will have an open book practice at this meeting. If you have a part, bring your ritual and plan on a practice. Giblites are still needed and should attend for a walk through. I plan on the same for the November meeting. Our inspection this year will be in the Royal Master Degree. It will be on December 1. This is a stated meeting and will be on a Thursday, our regular meeting night. Parts were assigned at the September meeting, but we still need help. There are a few speaking parts not filled and available to any companion who would like to demonstrate his thespian skills and learn one. I know it is short notice, but it can be done. There also is a need for Giblites. No speaking, but you will need to learn the floor work and walking routes. Basically, just follow the person in front of you. I want to thank all of the companions of Grafton Acklin Council who have taken speaking parts and I am looking forward to a successful inspection. Please do not forget we are still around and will be looking for members for next year. September would be a great time to bring some new companions of the Royal Arch. We have not had an actual candidate for the last two years. We desperately need one this year. Please keep our sick and distressed companions in your prayers. Also, let us remember our service personnel serving at home and abroad. I urge every companion of this council to remember those less fortunate and practice that truly Masonic virtue of relief. Officers, if you cannot make a meeting, please let the Illustrious Master or Deputy Master know either by phone or e-mail. Fraternally, Eugene Gray Jr. IM

“We were a family that made our Halloween costumes. Or, more accurately, my mother made them. She took no suggestions or advice. Halloween costumes were her territory. She was the brain behind my brother’s winning girl costume, stuffing her own bra with newspapers for him to wear under a cashmere sweater and smearing red lipstick on his lips.” – Ann Hood

Oldie but Goodie The manager of a large office noticed a new man one day and told him to come into his office. “What is your name?” was the first thing the manager asked the new guy. “John,” the new guy replied. The manager scowled, “Look, I don’t know what kind of a nambypamby place you worked at before, but I don’t call anyone by their first name. It breeds familiarity and that leads to a breakdown in authority. I refer to my employees by their last name only — Smith, Jones, Baker — that’s all. I am to be referred to only as Mr. Robertson. Now that we got that straight, what is your last name?” The new guy sighed and said, “Darling. My name is John Darling.” “Okay, John, the next thing I want to tell you is...”

Lessons of History In these worrisome times it might be helpful for us to take another long look at the wisdom of Charles A. Beard, the famous historian, distilled from a lifetime of study. When he was asked if could summarize lessons of history in a single volume, he declared he could do it in four sentences: 1. Whom the gods would destroy, they first make mad with power. 2. The mills of the gods grind slowly, but they grind exceedingly small. 3. The bee fertilizes the flower it robs. 4. When it is dark enough, you can see the stars. The Little Gazette

Toledo Commandery came out and participated. Our next practice will be October 1 (Saturday) at 8:30 a.m., and I will have some light fare of bagels, juice and coffee to help us get started. Please come out and support the commandery and enjoy the fun of doing the degree work. Who doesn’t enjoy playing with swords and marching around? Don’t hesitate to come out if you don’t have a uniform, as the commandery is attempting to assist in that by providing most of the items necessary. Our inspection will be January 21 and will consist of the Order of the Temple as well as Full Form opening, which requires many to make it look impressive as it should. We will practice twice a month until inspection is over and the practices are scheduled for the first Saturday of each month and the fourth Wednesday of each month. 8:30 a.m. on the Saturday and 7:30 p.m. on the Wednesday. Please remember our sick and distressed in your thoughts and prayers, as well as those who serve to protect us— both military and civil service. Fraternally yours, Tom Blansett EC

We have returned from Grand Chapter having taken part in the drill for our new Worthy Grand Matron, Michelle Howell and Worthy Grand Patron William Cox. We look forward to seeing many of our chapter members, as well as visitors from many chapters on October 21, at 7:30 p.m., for our 2016-2017 installation of officers of Toledo Chapter. I am excited to get this new year started; hopefully things will be going smoother for Rollie and me both at home and at chapter. I thank the members of Toledo for all the help and support you have given to us. I also extend thanks to the members of District 6 for all the support, love, encouragement that so many have also extended to us. You give us both reason to say, “I am proud to be a member of the Order of Eastern Star,” especially in the State of Ohio. If you didn’t get to see Maria and Andrew on the 17th, come to our installation. They will be with us that night, too. We congratulate Miss Kaitlyn Richardson, member of Sylvania Assembly #82, who was elected and installed as Grand Charity of Ohio Grand Assembly. (Continued in Column 4)

THANK YOU to everyone who helped make this possible. It takes EVERYONE to earn this award. Many of the items require a certain number or percentage of members to participate or attend. We are very proud to be part of such a caring and active chapter! Special thanks to PM Debi Huffman for compiling the report and being the official photographer of events. She also has been invaluable in posting items on line, on Facebook and on our website. One of our major fund-raisers is the food booth at the Grand Rapids Apple Butter Festival. This is a joint venture with Grand Rapids Masonic Lodge. You may help by working at the booth, making apple crisp, donating money or other items, and stopping by to eat lunch. Please contact the WM at (419) 8554094. All journeys must come to an end and the final destination of the 2016 “See the USA” caravan is in sight. Jimmie and I wish to thank you for the privilege of serving our chapter and for your love and support. On October 8, we will turn over the leadership of Triune Chapter to Denise and Gary. Please come and support them as they begin their year in the East. May God bless us all. Farewell, Jimmie and Joan

REMARKS This will be the last time I write a message for the Toledo Masonic Bulletin. This year has gone by so quickly. As I write this, we haven’t had Grand Chapter yet, but I am sure it was great. We had lots of great moments and many great memories this year. There isn’t enough space in this column to list them all. On the 9th we would like to see you at the EOP#1. It is from 2:00 to 4:00 p.m. We will hear at this meeting about all the things that happened at Grand Chapter and messages from the new WGM. Our own DGM, Jennifer Garringer will be leading this informative discussion. The 20th we will all meet again in Perrysburg (busy place) for the District 6 Fall Meeting. Call our secretary for more information, after all she is the district secretary, too. Jack and my final meeting for this year will be on the 25th. We will have a memorial service for all the members we lost this year. Then, I will turn the ‘keys to the kingdom’ over to Thelma Boos for her use next year. Please join us on November 4, for Thelma Boos and Ray Curtis and a new corps of officers as they are installed. If you had any part in this last year,

REMARKS Thanks to all who helped with and attended the 6th Annual Hobo Dinner and Hayride. It’s always a fun time. Many thanks also to Dick and Margi Buhrow for being such gracious hosts. We have been asked by Triune Chapter to help with their installation on Saturday, October 8. Please be there, if you can. So far, no other requests that I know of, but please contact me if you need our help and I will send out an email. Also, we have been asked to assist with Grand Chapter 2017 at Kalahari in Sandusky. There are many details being worked out at this time, but it sounds like we may be helping set up and take down the meeting room and hosting the men’s breakfast on Saturday morning. Our help will be needed for the whole weekend, but I’m hoping that duties can be spread out so that each of us will not have to work the whole time. This is a big undertaking, but I think our group is up to the task!!! I will be posting more information here as it becomes available. Don’t forget to put Saturday, March 4, 2017 on your calendar for our annual dinner/dance at the French Quarter in Perrysburg. Please note the change of dates, as it usually occurs on the second Saturday but needed to be moved up a week due to a scheduling conflict at the French Quarter. Until next month, safe travels to your lodge and Star meetings.

Let us all remember to keep the 2017 WGM and WGP in our prayers for safety in their travels across Ohio and to other grand jurisdictions across our country. Let your Light Shine, Shari and Rollie

District 2 Rainbow Girls Report By Brenda Roadarmel, M.A. Genoa Assembly #107 A wonderful time was had by District 2 Rainbow girls at Grand Assembly this year! With several new members witnessing it for the first time, it was enjoyable to watch their reactions to all the sessions and events. We were proud to watch our own Shelby Laughlin from Fremont Assembly serve as Grand Service Pro Tem! She also received a first Honorable Mention for her Grand Representative Flag for Arkansas and fourth place for her Grand Representative Report.

Lotus OES Jack and I want to thank you for being there and helping to make lasting memories for us. It was our pleasure to serve you and our wonderful order. Visit, send a card or call a shut-in today. It will make their day and make you feel better, too. The more we get together, the happier we’ll be. Diane and Jack

Ft. Miami-Calumet REMARKS Greetings Companions, October has plenty of activities to fill your calendar. This month, the Grand Chapter of Ohio will celebrate 200 years of existence. Established October 24, 1816. We can be proud of those before us who laid the foundation of our great Fraternity and carry on the teachings and ritualistic work we hold dear to us to the best of our abilities. The Grand Chapter Annual Convocation will be on Wednesday, October 5 and Thursday, October 6, at the Kalahari Resort in Sandusky. I would like to encourage you to attend the Religious Reaffirmation service we are hosting at 2:00 p.m., on Sunday, October 23. A representative of the Ohio Masonic Home will be in attendance and I’ve heard he’s a great speaker. A chance to see some great degree work can be observed on Saturday, October 29, at the Cleveland Masonic Auditorium, when the Grand Chapter will portray all four degrees starting at 9:00 a.m. The end of the day will be highlighted by the Grand High Priest’s Reception with a social hour at 6:00 p.m. As you can see, October is going to be a busy month with grand body annual meetings and the start of a new Masonic year. Keep a positive attitude, be proud to be a Mason, and don’t shy away from the opportunity to talk to a brother about becoming a Royal Arch Mason. Together, we can build our ranks, if we’re enthusiastic and want to show new members our best work. Think of our ill and shut-in companions in your prayers. Lotus Assembly was awarded a certificate for No Loss of Membership and Genoa received a trophy for No Suspensions. Lotus Assembly’s Madison Henderly, who served this year on the Grand Honor Court, took second place in the Friday Night Party Costume contest—she really nailed the Hippie Style and Pose! Genoa Assembly also took first place, yet again, in the Grand Assembly Door Decorating Contest for Creative Use of Materials. Grand Assembly concluded with the Grand Installation and we were proud to watch Shelby Laughlin, from Fremont Assembly, installed as the new Grand Chaplain for the coming year.

One Good Mason Saved, Another Good Mason Dead by Dean S. Clatterbuck, 32° It is Wednesday, November 1, 1950, one hundred fifty years to the day since John Adams became the first president to occupy The White House. Harry S. Truman is the 33rd president, and extensive repairs to The White House have forced the Truman family to move across Pennsylvania Avenue to the Blair House, usually reserved for visiting dignitaries. It was the home for President Truman and his family for almost his entire presidency and was quickly dubbed “The Truman White House.” Harry Truman’s schedule for the first of November is a bit lighter than usual, but the next 30 minutes will make that Wednesday a day that Harry Truman would remember for the rest of his life. It would not be forgotten because of an attempted assassination that day by two Puerto Rican nationalists, Griselio Torresola and Oscar Collazo. On October 30, 1950, an attempt at a coup in San Juan, Puerto Rico, collapsed in a bloody barrage of shots in which Griselio’s sister was wounded and captured. The nationalist cause had become personal as well as political for Griselio. He decided it was time to act, and the deed should be something big—like assassinating the President of the United States. On October 31, 1950, Oscar and Griselio registered at the Hotel Harris

Palestine OES Robert Briggs, Worthy Patron Elect. Also in October is Toledo Chapter installation on Friday, October 21. District meeting dinner reservations can be made through Darla, as chapter secretary, with a $13.00 check payable to Palestine Chapter. This check will be cashed! The reservation deadline is October 13. Our own Sister Carolyn Shelt is the District President. Keep our sick and shut-ins in your prayers.

Woodbine OES We are changing this date to avoid a long evening with all the activities at the first meeting. Refreshments for our birthday night will be served by Margie Buhrow. Woodbine Chapter has been asked to do a couple of dinners, so when you are called upon to assist with them, we hope that you will respond with a “yes”. Remember that we need people to help behind the scenes baking as well as preparing and serving these dinners. Your talents are always appreciated. We are once again selling Elder Beerman Community Day booklets. The cost is still $5.00 a booklet with our chapter retaining the entire $5.00 donation. There are many wonderful coupons in this book; please see any officer to purchase your book (s) or you can use the following site assigned specifically to Woodbine Chapter to order and the books will be mailed to you by Elder Beerman at no extra cost bit.ly/2c4517M. The sale runs from Wednesday, November 9 through Saturday, November 12. The pre-sale begins on November 2. Many bargains are being offered again this year with a $10.00 coupon and 30 percent coupon available in the book. These books can be used at all their affiliates throughout the area. Why not get yours today and help out our chapter at the same time. We also are still taking orders for Carruth items. See our Associate Conductress, Roberta, for an order. These are great Christmas gifts. Please continue to pray for our members who are homebound and our service members who are striving to keep us safe from harm. May God provide comfort and protection each day. May God keep you in His care, Dottie and Bob

under assumed names. The next day they ate lunch, and Griselio gave Oscar some hurried instructions on the weapon Griselio had purchased for him, a Walther P38. Hailing a cab, the men asked to be taken to the White House to see where the president lived. But the cab driver corrected them, telling them that Truman was living across the street at the Blair House. Upon arriving in the area of the Blair House, Griselio and Oscar surveyed the situation and formulated an improvised plan, not having known about Blair House until minutes before. As they looked over the scene, they could see two White House police officers in their guard houses, one at either end of the Blair House. One of them was 40-year-old Leslie Coffelt, a native Virginian who had begun his law enforcement career with the Metropolitan Police Department. After eight years, he transferred to the White House Police, the Uniformed Division of the Secret Service, where he now had seven years of service as a private, except for a break to serve in the Army during World War II. In an ironic twist of fate, he was scheduled to be off that day, but a fellow officer, one of his best friends, needed some time off to paint his house, so Les offered to work in his place. Les was an active Mason and a member of Potomac Lodge No. 5, having been raised on September 28, 1945. Les was faithful in his attendance, so far as his rotating shift work at Blair House allowed and had hoped that he might serve as lodge officer in 1951. It would be an unrealized hope. The two guard houses on either side of the Blair House were on the sidewalk, one at the west end and the other at the east. At 2:00 p.m., Leslie Coffelt was in the west end guard house and Officer Joe Davidson was on duty in the east end booth. White House Police Officer Donald Birdzell was guarding the front door to Blair House. At about 2:20 p.m., Griselio and Oscar approached Blair House from opposite directions. Secret Service Agent Floyd Boring had just stepped outside of Blair House for a routine check with his detail. He spoke with Les, then moved to the east booth and was talking with Joe in the booth when Oscar Collazo walked by. Officer Birdzell was facing the Blair House when he suddenly heard a sharp “click.” He recognized the sound as one associated with a firearm and pivoted on the spot. Oscar’s gun had misfired as he attempted to shoot Birdzell from point-blank range. Now, in extreme frustration, Oscar was pounding the Walther P38 with his left fist, which caused the weapon to fire, striking Birdzell in the right knee. In agonizing pain, Birdzell limped out onto Pennsylvania Avenue, turning to return fire at Oscar, who had started up the now unguarded steps. Officer Davidson began firing at Oscar from the east guard booth area, and Agent Boring also began firing. Oscar sat down on the second step and fired a clip of bullets at the officers, but failed to hit either of them. Agent Stewart Stout, inside the Blair House, heard the unmistakable sound of gunfire, grabbed a submachine gun, and took up a position inside the house at the door. Agent Vince Mroz emerged from the basement door behind Boring and Davidson and took one shot at Oscar. He then raced back into the basement to guard against any threat at the basement door at the other end of the building. Simultaneously, Griselio Torresola had been approaching from the west and arrived at the western guardhouse just as the first gunfire erupted. He was directly behind White House Police Officer Joe Downs, who was returning to Blair House after making a run to get lunch for the shift. Accustomed to

being frequently approached by tourists seeking information, Coffelt was taken completely by surprise as Griselio walked up. Griselio fired three rounds, hitting Coffelt in the chest, abdomen and legs. Les sank into his chair, mortally wounded, but still managed to remain conscious and draw his gun. Downs, standing in the doorway, attempted to draw his pistol, but Griselio, an excellent marksman, shot him three times. Then, seeing Birdzell trying to shoot Oscar from the street, Griselio fired at Birdzell, hitting him in his left knee and disabling him. It appeared that only Agent Mroz and Secret Service Agent Stout remained to guard the president, but Leslie Coffelt, mustering what must have been a monumental effort before passing out, aimed his weapon and fired. His aim was true. His shot struck Griselio in the head, killing him instantly. At the same time, Boring took a shot at Oscar, hit him in the chest, and put him out of action. It was over! All of the action had happened in a flash (later estimates ranged from 40 seconds to three minutes). The sound of gunfire roused Harry Truman from his nap. Arising from his bed, he walked to the front window to see what was going on. He looked out before Les Coffelt fired his fatal shot, but Griselio had emptied his German 9 mm Luger and was in the process of reloading. The assassin’s target was suddenly in plain view at the window. Secret Service Agent Floyd Boring saw Truman and called for him to get out of view. Whether or not Griselio ever saw Truman is unknown, but in any event, Les Coffelt’s final act made the question moot. U.E. Baughman, Chief of the Secret Service, was now on the scene, and uncertain if this was an isolated action or part of a larger plot, advised Truman to cancel his 2:50 trip to Arlington National Cemetery. Truman declined this advice and elected to go ahead, under a quadrupled Secret Service guard. Agent Birdzell’s wounds were not life threatening; Downs was seriously wounded, but survived. Officer Leslie Coffelt died in the hospital less than four hours after being shot. He was the first member of the Uniformed Secret Service to lose his life in the line of duty. Oscar Collazo also recovered from his wounds and was subsequently tried and sentenced to death. President Truman, not wanting to see him become a martyr, commuted his sentence to life imprisonment. President Jimmy Carter later ordered a now aged Collazo released, and he returned to Puerto Rico, where he died of natural causes in 1994. Three days after the assassination attempt, Harry Truman again returned to Arlington National Cemetery. This time, it was not to make a speech or help dedicate a statue. It was to attend the burial of Officer Leslie Coffelt. A religious service was held in the Fort Myer Chapel, conducted by Dean John W. Suter of the Washington National Cathedral. Brother Coffelt was accorded last military honors, and the last observance was a Masonic funeral by Potomac Lodge. The seven active pall hearers were fellow officers of the White House Police, and all were Masons. Two each were from Anacostia Lodge No. 21 and Potomac Lodge No. 5, one from Petworth Lodge No. 47, and two from other jurisdictions.
