We are one tonight and we breathing in the same air… So turn up the love, turn up the love, we’re turning up the love! Far East Movement -Turn Up The Love Ft Cover Drive

Yes, that was THE SONG for my 2013 kick –off! It made my nerve kept dancing all night long during the New Year Eve recently. Accompanied with the bunch of coolest friends I’ve ever had .Well here we are again at the new beginning of the year. It’s hard to believe but 2012 will soon become a distant memory. I am one of who ponders on the unexpected and unpredictable nature of life and wonders what is to come in the New Year. For many of us a new year allows us the opportunity to right perceived wrongs, a chance to change the things we want, repair broken relationships and reinforce strong friendships as we move into new horizons. I am sometimes aghast however, at those who approach a new year with the same negativity which they displayed in the previous one, completely oblivious to the golden opportunity for major change laid out in front of them. As for Today’s Choices, we begin this year with stunning women on our covers; Nadia Heng -Miss World Malaysia who talked about her next mission of career, and Mawarni Hassan who told us about her stories that ultimately inspiring. This year I hope we will bring you the stories that you want to read , the people you want to see and places that you want to visit. I hope that some stories impact in a positive way and introduce you to new subjects and new perspectives. Don’t forget to check on our new column - Must Read and February’s Love as we have hot and sizzling topics to share from now onwards. Let me wish all our readers a bright and enterprising new year and remember be kind to each other even in the most impossible moment because what you have today might be gone tomorrow. Thank you everyone! Happy Chinese New Year, Ciao!

ampung Kuantan Firefly Park in Kuala Selangor, Malaysia is the only place in this region where you can witness the sight of millions of fireflies flashing in synchrony, often referred to as the “Eighth Wonder of the World”. It is one of the must visit places of interest (POI) in Malaysia. You will be taken on a boat ride along the Selangor River where the fireflies inhibit around the branches of the “Berembang” trees along the riverbank. olymenorrhea is the medical term used to describe prolonged menstrual bleeding. The rise and fall of hormonal levels during the month control the menstrual cycle. The cycle is general between 21 and 35 days long and begins on the first day of the period, ending on the first day of the next period. Periods generally last between two and seven days. Doctors recommend that any woman over the age of 21 who is sexually active has yearly pelvic exams and Pap smears. Women who experience prolonged periods or bleeding after menopause should seek medical help.

InTRauTeRIne DevIce

A form of birth control that is inserted into the uterus by a physician, the intrauterine device is designed to cause irritation to the uterine wall so implantation of a fertilized egg is not possible. According to Dr. Mary Bovo, MD, board-certified obstetrician and gynaecologist, this device can cause so much irritation that the uterus cannot stop bleeding after the normal period has stopped. The woman may also experience cramping and heavy clotting.

BLeeDInG DISoRDeR

According to Dr. Bovo, blood clotting disorders, such as Von Willebrand disease, factor abnormalities or haemophilia can also cause prolonged menstrual bleeding each month.

Periods may be heavy and last longer than 10 days. Doctors may use family history, examination and blood testing to diagnose these issues.

HoRMonaL IMBaLance

Hormonal balance between progesterone and oestrogen will regulate the buildup of the uterine lining. This lining is shed during menstruation. According to Mayo Clinic physicians, when imbalances occur, they can prolong the length of the menstrual period and increase the amount of bleeding. Lack of ovulation can be one cause of hormonal imbalances that result in prolonged periods or heavy flow.

uTeRIne poLypS

Uterine polyps are small, benign growths in the lining of the uterus. According to physicians at Mayo Clinic, these growths can cause heavy or prolonged bleeding. The polyps commonly occur in younger women of reproductive age as a result of high hormone levels.

canceR

Although a rare occurrence, uterine, cervical or ovarian cancer can cause excessive menstrual bleeding. Menstrual periods may also be prolonged and occur between periods or after intercourse. Physicians will use examination and biopsy to determine the specific type of cancer and recommend appropriate treatment protocols.

MeDITeRRaNeaN DIeT pReveNTS HYpeRTeNSIoN The Mediterranean Diet is high in vegetables, fruit, legumes and grains, but also contains moderate amounts of white meat and fish. It is sparse in red meat, with most fat being unsaturated and coming from olive oil and nuts.

T

he addition of small-tomoderate amounts of (red) wine has been shown to enhance the healthy mix. In combination with moderate exercise and not smoking, the Mediterranean Diet offers a scientifically researched, affordable, balanced, and healthpromoting lifestyle choice. When we think of the Mediterranean diet, we picture Europeans leisurely dining on meals of fish, vegetables, fruits, olives, and crusty whole-grain bread dunked in olive oil. For thousands of years, residents of the Mediterranean coastal region have enjoyed this kind of delicious diet - high in plant foods and monounsaturated fats (like olive oil) - while getting plenty of regular physical activity. They don’t think of their eating habits as a diet plan; it's simply their way of life. And it's a way of life that apparently leads to long, healthy lives virtually free of chronic disease. 22 ● TODAY’S CHOICES | JAN - FEB 2013

LIfeSTyLe & RISK: The modern Western diet, increasing urbanisation, office working, daily stress and reliance on the car all appear to have contributed to a recipe for unhealthy living, as highlighted in the Ministry of Health Malaysia.

They don’t think of their eating habits as a diet plan; it's simply their way of life. caSe STuDy In euRope: The decades following World War II saw a rapid rise in the UK (and Western) death rate from coronary heart disease (CHD) that peaked in the 1970s. Since then, the UK coronary death rate has been falling due to improvements in treatment, such as clot-busting drugs, heart bypass and angioplasty, as well as

public health measures addressing smoking, high blood pressure and raised cholesterol. However, CHD is still the most common cause of death (and premature death) in the UK, accounting for 101,000 deaths each year with 1 in 5 men and 1 in 6 women dying from the condition. Among the more developed countries in Europe, only Ireland and Finland have higher rates of CHD than the UK. Unhealthy lifestyle, diet and obesity have been linked to other medical scourges of modern society, such as type 2 diabetes, raised cholesterol and high blood pressure, which can interact to make medical risks and problems more severe. Diet, lifestyle factors and obesity are also associated with an increased risk of certain cancers. And being substantially overweight can bring on or worsen osteoarthritis, sleep apnoea, high blood pressure and gallbladder disease.

Relief Is in the Stretch In deep tissue massage the therapist focuses on the inner layers of muscle tissue and applies pressure to specific muscles. The pressure is much more intense than in Swedish massage because the goal is therapeutic change to the muscle fibres, not just relaxation. When using deep tissue techniques the massage therapist does not use oil or lotion, so that there is more friction between the therapist's hands and the client's skin. This is so the therapist can grab and stretch the tissue to lengthen and separate individual muscle fibres. Go With the Flow Deep tissue massage increases the flow of blood and lymph in the muscle tissue, which helps flush away the toxins that build up during the normal course of cellular activity. This promotes the health of muscle tissue and aid in injury prevention. Deep tissue work relieves muscle tension that causes pain and stiffness. It is therapeutic for athletes whose muscles are subjected to frequent or prolonged workouts. Ease Trigger Tension Trigger point therapy is one of the uses of deep tissue massage. 24 TODAY’S CHOICES | JAN - FEB 2013

Deep Tissue Massage Is Detoxification Trigger points, knots of tension in a muscle, shorten the muscle causing restricted movement and pain. The massage therapist applies pressure to a trigger point until the tension releases and the muscle fibres lengthen. Massage therapists use this technique to address tension headaches and back pain that is muscular in origin.

Deep tissue work relieves muscle tension that causes pain and stiffness. Massage Away What Ails You According to researchers, deep tissue massage can lower blood pressure and slow the heart rate. Thus, some people with high blood

pressure and certain cardiovascular conditions might benefit from deep tissue massage as a therapeutic intervention. Therapists can also use it to break up scar tissue. Other conditions with a positive response to deep tissue massage include chronic pain, fluid retention, carpal tunnel syndrome and some neuromuscular problems. Make the Muscles Work Deep tissue massage is not a comfortable, relaxing experience, but in the long run it promotes comfort and relaxation. The pressure that the therapist applies can be quite intense and some people might find it too strong. You may feel some soreness afterwards, as if you had been through a workout, because deep tissue massage really makes the muscles work. Since it also flushes a lot of toxins from the muscle tissue it is important to drink plenty of water after a massage treatment. The increased fluid will help eliminate these wastes from the body.

hen I casually asked my married friend Lily about secret turnons for women, she didn't hesitate for a second. "Doing the dishes," she responded, as her husband looked at her in disbelief. "That's hot!"For many women, turn-ons aren't necessarily about traditional romantic gestures like getting roses on Valentine's Day or canoodling during candlelit dinners. Simple everyday rituals like pitching in with the dishes or having coffee together at sunrise can be downright sexy.

Helping to Unload the Groceries Noryn, a writer and stay-at-home mum in Selangor, says her husband not only helps out with the dishes, but also with household chores and taking care of their 2-year-old daughter. But what she appreciates most is when she comes home from the store, he will always come out to the car to help unload bags because he knows she's got a bad back."What makes it special," she says, "is that he never rubs any of what he does in my face or complains. He simply believes these things are what husbands are supposed to do. That to me is the biggest turn-on of all!" 26 TODAY’S CHOICES | JAN - FEB 2013

Simple everyday rituals like pitching in with the dishes or having coffee together at sunrise can be downright sexy.

A Cup of Joe at Sunrise Stephani Ching, Penang, has been married to artist and designer for 35 years and works side-by-side with him managing their art business."Of course, there are many reasons that our love has endured," she says. "But the one thing that I really love is that he brings me my first cup of coffee each morning."He rises much earlier than she does and brews coffee as he begins working on his art. When he sees her bedside light turn on, he brings her coffee over to her."We usually have a cup together on our veranda while watching the sun come up over our ranch," she says. "We like to give thanks and to plan our day."

Need a Ride, Baby After an especially long day at work, Yati, a psychotherapist in Kuala Lumpur, says her husband of five years knows exactly how to lift her spirits. He will surprise her by showing up at her workplace with

his tow truck and loading her car onto his flatbed. "I feel like I am always putting out fires at work, so at the end of the day, the last thing I want to do is one more thing, like drive home," she says. "So when I walk out of work and he is sitting in the parking lot patiently waiting for me, it always makes me smile! And I feel appreciated

Saying "I'm Sorry" Goes a Long Way Marina Mansor, writes via email that she is single. But what she loved most about her partner in a previous relationship was that he was quick to say, "I am sorry," when he was clearly at fault."A simple apology when deserved expresses a deep kind of respect for the other person," she writes. "Once you are with someone who is emotionally fair and considerate, I no longer care about dishes or who does what. And, for me, it's a definite turn-on."

ho says you can’t be stylish and sexy? Granted, that new mini trapeze dress may not be on your fashion horizon right now, but there are many other fashionable options for the “mature” fashionista. Please throw out the following:

over sixty like Meryl Streep, Diane Sawyer, Barbara Walters, and you will notice that they keep the patterns to a minimum, tending to focus more on wearing solid colours.

1. Floor-length floral printed dresses 2. Muumuus (unless they are for lounging around the house) 3. Long (ankle length), unstructured, a-line skirts 4. elastic-waisted pants that make everyone look like a balloon 5. Unstructured pants and suits 6. Large, oversized T-shirts 7. Khaki/mauve-coloured grandma flats 8. Unstylish jumper-type dresses (usually made of khaki or jean material) 9. Sweaters with embroidery, appliques, etc

One area that older women always seem to get wrong is in the accessories department. Don’t wear your entire jewellery box, but focus on one wearing one standout piece at a time. Also, don’t be afraid to wear trendy accessories. By keeping your wardrobe basic, you can add trendy accessories without looking like you’re trying to “be young”. Stores like Mango,Forever 21, H&M, are all great places to find accessories without going overboard with spending.

Then start re-building your wardrobe. The easiest first step is to go the monochromatic (ie wearing one, simple color like blue, black, white, khaki, etc) route, which will make you look slimmer and classic. Now monochromatic doesn’t mean boring or boxy, just means keeping it simple. Take a look at fabulous women

You may have noticed that YOU are not on your list of priorities. If you even remember to add yourself onto the list, you will no doubt find your name pretty far down, somewhere between “taking the kids to soccer practice” and “making spaghetti”. This is a sad state of affairs that affects most people in the world today. We simply don’t take care of ourselves the way we should. And let’s be honest: if you don’t take care of yourself, nobody else is going to. If you have a hard time reconciling yourself to taking minutes or hours out of a busy schedule for no other reason that pampering, remember that a vibrant, happy, alert version of you is a lot better than one that is tired and depressed, especially when it comes to taking care of the other priorities on your list. es, really! Does that shock you? No doubt you're a very nice person, so it probably does but, if you have bad breath, it may well be true. She might even think you're extremely handsome, but an ancient brain system, originally designed to identify rotten food, literally FORCED her to reject you! The moment it detected your bad breath, the decision not to have anything to do with you was made, probably without her even realizing it.

tenses muscles in our face called the levator labii. This produces the facial characteristics everybody recognizes as disgust (i.e. a scrunched nose and raised upper lip), which prevents foul odours or stray particles (from whatever caused the disgust) from entering the nose and mouth. Additionally, the brain creates an overwhelming urge to recoil or turn away from the source of disgust in an effort to further isolate the body from any possible contamination.

You see, bad breath contains a number of extremely smelly chemical compounds, including hydrogen sulfide, which smells like rotten eggs. It also contains methyl mercaptan and skatole, which smell like faeces, as well as cadaverine, which smells like corpses, and putrescine, which smells like rotten meat!

If you have bad breath, that reaction probably sounds familiar! That's why people turn away, step back or cover their nose and mouth when you're near them. They can't help it. It doesn't matter if they think you're the greatest person they ever met because, once their brain detects any of these smells, it recognizes them as a potential source of infection and literally FORCES their body to automatically recoil in disgust. In other words: Their brain recognizes your bad breath as a DANGEROUS THREAT to their health and well-being!

All of these smells have something in common: they evoke disgust, an extreme emotion designed to protect us from things that are unclean, inedible, or infectious. When we feel disgust, our brain

The antioxidants in colourful vegetables and fruits, such as leafy greens, deep red tomatoes, blueberries, and carrots, help stop unstable molecules from damaging healthy cells. You cannot feel it when some cells are damaged or dying, but you can see it in the signs of aging, such as wrinkles. So at each meal, fill about half your plate with fruits and vegetables. Your goal is five to nine servings a day. •

Three particular antioxidants, vitamin C, zinc, and betacarotene will help protect your vision from macular degeneration, the leading cause of blindness in adults 65 and older. If you already have macular degeneration, eating foods with these nutrients may slow its progress. Dark green leafy vegetables like spinach, kale, collard, and mustard greens will help the most. But you also help your eyes when you eat brightcolored produce, including corn, peppers, oranges, and cantaloupe.

A powerful antioxidant in grapes and red wine, called resveratrol, helps reduce your risk of cancer, heart disease, and premature aging.

Antioxidants like vitamin C can even keep your skin youngerlooking. A 2010 study showed that eating lots of yellow and green vegetables was linked to fewer wrinkles.

YEAST Boulangerie Bistro & Bar à Vin

he newest and most promising French boulangerie and casual dining outlet commenced operations on November last year. I first got wind of it when Chef Paul of The Cooking Studio hinted at an upcoming French bakery during my Rachel Allen session just a month back. Chef Paul, who knew about my obsession with breads and desserts, had confidently proclaimed that my woes of seeking good European breads here in KL are over. I very nearly jumped for joy to be told such promising news and when I received the invite for YEAST Boulangerie’s launch party, I replied enthusiastically that I’ll be in attendance for sure!

Boeuf Bourguignon

Pan-seared Salmon

"Our breads and pastries are not only fresh, but also longer lasting because of our natural yeast starter." Christophe Chatron-Michaud, YEAST Founder Gruyere Cheese and Smoked Duck Batard

Walnut Raisin Loaf

During the launch evening we were served morsels from their mains on the menu as well as some pastries and breads. The Gruyere Cheese and Smoked Duck Batard is a recommended choice for those seeking savoury loaves. The fragrant is strong from the cheese and the smoked duck took the boredom away from usual ham & cheese loaves. For a sweeter option, the raisin and nuts loaf was chockful of ingredients and very worth it’s’ price! I’m not a fan of raisins but I actually liked the raisins in this as it was plump and juicy; totally different from the usual raisin loaves in town that uses the cheaper, dark variety. On the Bistro side, YEAST will also feature signature dishes like Boeuf Bourguignon; tender braised beef short ribs with red wine with root vegetable puree, and crispy fried onions. We had sampling portions of it that evening and I can’t wait to be back for a full portion! It was fork tender and I could detect the faint aroma of wine it was braised in. Other samplings include the salmon, pumpkin soup and nicoise salad. Basket of breads came around for more of our sampling pleasure and we happily chewed on white chocolate loaf, cranberry and the L’Ancien, all satisfyingly crusty, yeasty and distinctively rustic. As the evening progressed, the much awaited repertoire of French desserts was served. The bitter sweet dark chocolate tart was wonderful while the zesty lemon tart wasn’t too sour so I actually enjoyed both. The only gripe we had was the hard crust. All feedback were channelled to Christophe Chatron-Michaud, Founder of YEAST and I’m sure we can expect due improvements. We took back in our goody bags some mushroom and ham & cheese puffs, both of which wasn’t as flaky and airy as I would have preferred. The cross sections halves showed a slight collapsed structure, and the puffs lacked distinctive even thin layers.

A session with Christophe Gros, Artisan Baker Personally for me, the highlight of the evening was a very educational session with Christophe Gros, Artisan Boulanger (Artisan Baker) from Lyon, France. Christophe is the head baker here at Yeast. Being a huge bread fan, I do know a thing or two about bread making in general and in view of my enthusiasm Chris was kind enough to share further about his bread making techniques, not just in theory but even bringing out a few of the flour he used for the breads in YEAST. He stated, “Our breads are made using home-grown, natural yeast which is almost impossible to find in bakeries and food outlets these days. It gives our breads a deeper flavour and the perfect crust and texture which are going to be unique to YEAST”. He added, “Our breads and pastries are not only fresh, but also longer lasting because of our natural yeast starter.” Christophe Chatron-Michaud, Founder of YEAST said, “We want to move away from the stereotypical perception of French food where it is rich and indulgent. YEAST offers “Simple French cuisine”, where we not only provide hearty breakfasts for the family, we also cater for quick business lunches, relaxing afternoon teas, and you can end your days with dinner and wine in the charm of our cozy ambience”. YEAST’s Bar à Vin, offers a lighter fare where one can enjoy small bites, while watching the chefs in action at the open kitchen. For vino, you can enjoy a selection of fine international wines both by bottles and by the glass together with your food. Last but not least, here’s a hot tip – all breads are sold at a 30% discount between 5 – 7 pm. While nothing beats freshly baked loaves in the morning, do hop in to grab some for tea if you’re in the vicinity! I know I will. For many Klang Valley folks, Serai is synonymous with casual dining and sophisticated dishes. With outlets in Subang, Petaling Jaya and Cyberjaya, Serai now brings its signature cuisine and inspired dining experience to Kuala Lumpur with the launch of its flagship outlet in Life Centre. Serai@Life Centre’s sprawling 4,600 sq ft space epitomises what downtown dining is all about. Classy elements partner clever use of space to make the most of its prime location. Floor to ceiling windows seem to invite the outdoors in, while a dramatic glass atrium area provides for a spectacular ambience. The menu at Serai@Life Centre remains true to that of its sister outlets. The Malay, Thai and Western cuisines reflect both the family’s flair for inspirational dishes and use of fresh, quality ingredients. The Malay cuisine showcases heritage dishes and antique eats, such as the traditional Serai Nasi Kerabu. Painstakingly prepared with bunga telang (butterfly pea flower) and valued both for its signature indigo hue and herbal benefits, the dish further evokes yesteryear’s palate with sides that include ulam, solok lada and kerisik.

Elsewhere, the Thai Steamed Fish with Lime Sauce is bursting with flavour, while the Western menu surprises with the boldness of beef rendang paired with penne, and the elegant grilled tenderloin with shallot sauce. Serai@Life Centre also takes its desserts seriously. Serai Group Pastry Chef, Annabelle Liau, gives classics the Serai twist for delectable creations such as Pistachio Creme Brulee, Nutella Ravioli and Pandan Banana Fritters. Her Berry Pavlova is Serai’s bestseller – a luscious meringue masterpiece dressed in whipped cream and copious amounts of fresh Summer fruits. Drinks too are given the Serai spin, where traditional favourites get updated for a more sophisticated feel. The Serai Ice Tea is a lemon sorbet drink with lemongrass extract and fresh mint, while the Milky Bandung gets its double kick of cool from crushed ice and soda mixed with rose syrup, fresh milk and pandan.

Serai@Life Centre caters to lunch, dinner and corporate functions, and makes an ideal place for private events, too. It opens daily, from 11am to 10pm. For reservations call 03-2181 6717 or visit www.seraigroup.com.my. JAN - FEB 2013 | TODAY’S CHOICES ● 47

id I say gossiping is an epidemic? Everyone talks and the next thing you know, people who don’t even know you - hate you. Last time I checked the facts of “dating rules”, I remember seeing men and women receiving very similar advice, which is to let the other party call them first, in another word, play hard to get. But then I also recall knowing two good looking people who fancy each other but never got the chance to go out with each other because of how vile our society is. If you’re smart and experienced enough, you’ll manage to read the other party’s signal just fine. On the other hand, if you lack of self-esteem , you would start asking around about the person you like and in the end, you end up hearing a rumour about him being a total jerk without even having the slightest chance to at least make out with each other. Well that’s the most common trend happening around town but we are not likely to give a damn about it for whatever reason. The same goes with a girl who caught a guy’s attention but he decides to not pursue her just because she has previously dated his good friend who dumped her because she allegedly has been a narcissistic sociopath. A pissed off and bitter ex boyfriend who has a mouth like Joan Rivers can make her life a living hell just by telling everyone and everything about their relationship. Knowing how cruel some people are ,

68 ● TODAY’S CHOICES | JAN - FEB 2013

this kind of fiasco would make the whole thing amazingly awkward. Everyone talks and the next thing you know, people who don’t even know you hate you. In a small city like ours, almost everyone inhales each and every information they hear about the other person because we are stupidly shallow like that. Everything we hear from a third party always sound scandalous. Didn’t I say gossiping is an epidemic? It doesn’t stop. We all want an Alexander Skarsgard-ish boyfriend, the most alluring girlfriend other people can only drool at and the best of friends that you can count on as your entourage when you paint the city red. The trick is no rocket science, pick the right people who deserve your dirty jokes, the ones who won’t mistake your obvious sex appeal for deliberate attention seeking, and those who deserve your leftover pizza when they crash at your place after a wild night out. Stay the hell away from the ones who purposely steal your limelight to make you less likeable and the witches who approach you to only bitch about others. Sometimes we can get so lucky to be with the person of our dream and the stars are aligned but it becomes a short lived happiness when you realize you share too much of information with unimportant people around us aka no lifers without even realizing it. That “he said, she said” vibe around you has got to go. Some people need to know that

no one is actually jealous of them, there are times where we just don’t like each other and that’s fine because we really don’t need to if we don’t want to or we can’t. Liking or disliking one another is our prerogative. At the end of the day, everything is about making ourselves feel good, so why don’t we talk about something that is worth having?

So what are we thinking?

Alright this is random but sometimes I think people don’t do certain things not because they’re not in their nature but simply because they’re so terrified of being judged. Some people want to have ‘amazing romance’ on their first date, but fend off the temptation because they don’t want their love interest to have a weird impression on them. I’m sure there’s a time where you get hit on a gobsmackingly handsome married man but you reluctantly turn him down because you don’t want to embarrass yourself and not because you don’t want to do it per se. You want, but you can’t or you’re not ready. You’d love to but your inner angel doesn’t quite agree with what you have in mind. Initiators always get the bad name and if things go wrong, get the blame too. The bottom line is, it is entirely your choice what you do with your body (and your life) for as long as you’re not popular in the city for all the wrong reasons. Reversed Opinion between Men & Women: ON BEAUTY

B

eing an international lady seeking universal love while secretly hoping that I might well, meet The One (a fulltime international boyfriend / husbandto-be), I found myself many male friends of all kinds of nationality – the romantic Italian, nosy French, loud American, pretty Korean, weird Russian… the list goes on as wide as the globe can be. Most men find it very interesting to learn that I write for a living. Being a fashion and lifestyle blogger, one topic I find extremely hard to avoid is the question about women’s relationship with beauty. Men do not seem to understand why there are so many shades of lipstick at a single cosmetic counter, or why do we need so many counters after all. Here I identified the most usual FAQs from the male gender.

To women in general:

Why wear makeup? I go out in a pair of jeans, two sprays of my favorite perfume, and *snaps fingers* go out to impress some girls. Easy! What’s with the heels? Are they even comfortable? (Ironically, this question usually comes from shorter guys who love to date long legs but complains about it all the time.)

To Asian* women in particular:

• • •

Why dye your hair? Why wear false lashes when you have real eyelashes? Why do Asian women wear colour contact lenses? That’s just so weird! Why change your natural state of beauty at the first place? I like to see you without makeup. “I like to see you without makeup”. I actually tested this out once to watch my date’s eyes running wild over this lady in a slutty red dress and strappy heels. That’s when I first learnt that a) Beauty is necessary. b) Men too, can be hypocrites.

70 ● TODAY’S CHOICES | JAN - FEB 2013

*On Caucasian VS Asian beauty First of all, on behalf of (most) Asian ladies out there, it is NOT that we don’t embrace the kind of ‘exotic beauty’ that God bless us with; but kindly look around and think twice to see if it is not that unarguable after all if I say Caucasians, both men and women, are blessed with a kaleidoscopic variety of sapphire blue / olive green / hazelnut brown eyes, laced with naturally curled and volumized eye lashes. Not to forget the variety of hair colors: strawberry pink blonde / chestnut brown / hot red hair. All this comes with a package that includes a sharp bridge nose to compliment the whole look. So be it a sexy Jolie or plain Jane, there is less work to be done to look gorgeous in no time. Here is an obvious statement. Choices for a typical Asian woman are: black eyes, black hair, small frame, big nose. I’m not even sure if those are options at all. I think that finds Asian women in a pretty confused state, as there is a constant struggle to strike a balance between highlighting their natural beauty and achieving what is perceived as ‘beauty’ by the mainstream society (you see this a lot in Japanese makeup trends or even anime). On the bright side, there is a lot of space to play around especially when makeup is such a fun art. On the downside, there is much to be done if you are running late for a dinner party.

Going back to our main topic, here is what She versus He thinks about “Women and Beauty”:

What she thinks?

I wear makeup / dress up for myself to feel great and confident.

What he thinks?

C’mmon! Women spend hours in front of the mirror to impress men. Due to the lack of sentimentality towards this issue, I hatched my own theory about:

What I really think (For her)

As far as the saying “the best thing to wear is your confidence” goes, I wonder: How does confidence transpire if you don’t have the right ‘tools’ to make it happen? Confidence alone is something so naked and intangible. In my opinion, such is a word to be dressed up with things that make you feel good about

MUST READ yourself – something as simple as a good mascara or a good workout regime practiced daily. Everything else will then fall into place unless of course, if you have self-esteem issues. So I asked a 40 years old friend about what HE thinks about this matter (just to make sure that this article remains unbiased), and here is a summarized version in my own words of what he has to say. The main reason for looking good is always and absolutely for yourself. You look in the mirror after you’re all dolled up and think, “I feel great in this dress, walking in this pair of heels make me feel sexy; I’m ready to go out!” However, the story does not end there. The second reason pops up the moment you step out in public. This is the time to get public approval and recognition. This does not necessarily mean that we get all made up to pick up guys; but for instance, you walk into a bar, look around, and realize that NO one notices you at all after all the effort you poured into dressing up all evening. You would probably be consciously wondering – did I paint one eye bigger? This is to say that wearing beauty does not only have to be for one party.

What I really think (For him)

I think men often say and think that women wear makeup to impress them not because they would love to solely believe that, but because they find it hard to relate to this very feminine word: beauty. To paint a simpler analogy for our male readers here, imagine if beauty was an object. Let’s just say beauty is your favourite racecar. In this case, I shall use a Porsche as an example.

you-name-it; and starts to seek approval for him and his new Porsche as a team. I believe we can all agree that both men AND women are easily impressed by a handsome car. Unfortunately, usually when a woman peeps into it, to her expected disgrace she either sees a very old, or fat man. The value of beauty drops there, just like how a man discovers for the very first time that the woman he is dating looks totally different sans makeup. So the question is, what happens when you do earn recognition? Before this article starts to sound more superficial, allow me to say that most relationships start and spark from ‘beauty’ and there is nothing to be ashamed of if your story admits that. After all, God gave us eyes to appreciate (nice) visuals. What’s more important here is to acknowledge that once you gain that recognition and slowly build that into what we call ‘love’ between two people, it is only love if you would still be with that person even when her face starts to crack with wrinkles, instead of looking for girls young enough to be your daughter; just like how you would want your wife to stay by your side and support you if the bank was to confiscate your car.

In the Nutshell

Men and women are really not that different. At the beginning, everyone does what it takes to feel great and confident about themselves. The moment they are placed on a platform surrounded by judging eyes of the society, beauty suddenly becomes something to be recognized as recognition.

At first the guy walks into the showroom, buys the car, goes out for his first few test-drives and says “Damn, I feel good about driving this car! Its design is consistent and unique, has précised gear changes, horsepower is smooth yet with sufficient power, plus responsive reaction of suspension for fantastic handling…“ Obviously he buys the car for no one but himself.

Men, you should be grateful if she asks your opinion about a dress; just as a woman should be happy if he asks your opinion about a car. Even if you have zero interest about a certain matter, it is important to respect your partner’s interest and to know that your opinion matters simply because you do. My take on this? – To embrace all kinds of beauty while they exist. ‘Beauty’ is only beautiful because it does not last forever. Instead of feeling sorry for the (short) life span of a given rose, it is wisest to admire its beauty to the fullest before it withers.

Two months later, he drives his car out everywhere – to fancy restaurants, clubs,

ARGUE Fairly With Your Partner A recent study found that while arguing helps women destress, it makes your guy's anxiety skyrocket. Unfortunately, fights are inevitable. We got experts to spill on how to avoid World War III and emerge from a spat more in love.

1. Take Five

Fighting can trigger the sympathetic nervous system, which shifts your body into fight or flight mode. Adrenaline courses through you at this time, making you less able to think logically. If you want to have an actual discussion (not a hell-raising blowout), your bod needs to be relaxed. Sometimes the only way to do this is to take a time out. Remember, if he needs to leave the situation, he's trying to calm down too. It's not about you.

2. Use "And" Instead of "But"

Once your bod is relaxed, start by acknowledging that you heard your guy and validate what he said. For example, "I understand that it may frustrate you when I spend too much money on clothes. I know we're saving up to move in together." When you validate his concern first, he'll be more likely to relax and listen to you. When sharing your side, it's better to start with an "and" instead of a "but." When people hear "but," they know they are about to be contradicted. Follow up with, "I hear your point, and I also feel that it's

important for me to be in control of how I spend my money. I needed new clothes to wear with my clients." Recap: Always acknowledge their stance first, then say "and" before stating your own.

3. Ditch the Bitchy Texts

We get it. If you've been stewing about the fact that he still hasn't asked his boss for that time off for the trip you've been planning, it's tempting to fire back with a scathing text or epic email. But it's best to put down your phone and take a walk before blindsiding him with a message you'll most likely regret later.

4. keep It Clean

Ban any NSFW language and sarcasm from the disagreement since it automatically puts you both on the defensive. Picking at his sensitive spots just creates more animosity, and it won't evoke any compassion from him.

5. Pick Your Battles

Do you really need to give him crap for catching Sunday night football with the guys instead of watching Chick Flick with you? Probably not. If every little

thing your bf does upsets you—like the way he brushes his teeth after breakfast instead of before— there might be a deeper issue. It's time to assess your feelings for him and look at your relationship as a whole. Nitpicking isn't the answer.

6. Give a Little

Compromise is key. If your guy feels like he's always giving in, he'll start to resent you. Think of what you actually "need" from him. If something you want is not really essential to your relationship happiness, learn to let it go. When he sees that you're willing to give in sometimes (especially if you don't typically do it), he'll be more likely to compromise too.

7. Show Some Appreciation

If you want something in your relationship to change, it's important to acknowledge what you appreciate about your man first. That will calm his anxiety and help him feel more receptive to what's bothering you. He stays calm. Your feelings are heard. It's a win-win situation.

Just Get Married

Yes, it's prime engagement season. Thinking about tying the knot, but aren't sure if it's right for you? There are ups and downs to putting a ring on it, but experts say these are the best reasons why people get married. 1. Making It Official Gives Your

Relationship More Substance Publicly declaring your love in front of friends and family in a formal ceremony, and then signing a marriage license that legally seals the deal can make your twosome feel meaningful in a way that simply living together long-term might not.

2. You're More Likely to Stick Out Tough Times A marriage contract puts a protective shell around your relationship that helps keep your bond strong when there are bumps in the road—it gives couples a sense of security that they'll stay together no matter what. Plus, it's harder to leave if everyone you know identifies you as being part of a married couple, as opposed to an individual person who happens to be dating so and so.

3. You'll Feel Like a Team

Using the terms "husband" and "wife" often causes people to think of each other in a more permanent, you're-apart-of-me/I'm-a-part-of-you way— you're technically a family now. Also, one interesting thing that happens when people get married is what theorists call "transformation of motivation": You start to work together to achieve the best outcomes for you both, as opposed to acting on your own to get the things that you each want. Essentially, you take on one another's dreams and form a new set of mutual goals.

5. You'll Become More Relaxed and Grounded

It's common for married couples to settle into a sense of rootedness and calm—whereas pre-wedding, they were more adrift, unsure of where they'd be living or what they'd be doing a year or two down the line. Because marriage is the ultimate level of commitment that our society recognizes, once you're hitched, you can sit back and feel content that you've reached that hope of a lifelong, satisfying, loving relationship

6. It Shows How Important Your Partner Is

You'll probably have lots of different relationships over the years, but you (hopefully) will only have one spouse. Singling out your man as the one you chose to marry says that he means more to you than any other dude you've dated: you've identified each other as your thisis-it, once-in-a-lifetime partner.

7. There Are Practical and Benefits,

Too Obviously, you shouldn't tie the knot for the tax breaks alone. But there are some useful advantages that couples who are just cohabitating don't have. For instance, if either of you ends up in the hospital, you can visit each other because you're related. You can also share benefits like health care and social security. And if you have kids, they'll be supported even if you do split up.

4. You'll Do It More ,If You Say "I Do"

Despite the stereotype of married people having boring sex lives, research has shown that they actually get it on way more than single people. JAN - FEB 2013 | TODAY’S CHOICES ● 73
