hat’s your ‘why’?

After helping over a thousand people over fourteen years set, reach and maintain a healthy lifestyle, I’ve come to realise an important question most people looking to lose weight/improve their health don’t ask themselves ‘why am I overweight and out of shape’?

Now I don’t mean ‘because I over eat’ or ‘because I don’t exercise’ I mean, why have these answers remained the same for probably years. I’d say 90% of the people I help have a good idea of the foods they should be eating more and less of, and know that some exercise would help. Yet they continue to eat, drink and maintain an activity level that’s making them unhappy, frustrated and, more commonly nowadays, increasing their risk to many diseases and illnesses. So why continue to do this?

This in my opinion is the first thing you should ask yourself before undertaking a healthier lifestyle. Because if you are serious about getting and staying healthier, you must have a strategy that outlines and combats your own personal ‘why’s’.

Maybe you are in the 10% and simply need more knowledge on correct nutrition and exercise?

Maybe there is a confidence issue to be addressed in order for you to succeed? You may need exercise that can fit into a tight schedule? You might be lacking in motivation, so what goal would really inspire you? Or in some cases you may feel you are beyond help?

All these ‘whys’ and many more require a different approach, with a different strategy and plan in order to yield the results you want. So before reading another generic, unsuitable exercise plan or extreme fad diet, really think of your individual requirements and realistic solutions to them. That’s the key to your long term health and happiness.

A much loved fixture of Tickhill!

Autumn sees the Nursery celebrating 11 years of Sue and John Draper owning Wilsic Road Day Nursery. In that time the Nursery has grown to become a much loved fixture of Tickhill. The Nursery are regular participants in the Gala (coming 3rd this year!), the Scarecrow Festival, the Tickhill “All Things Nice and Christmas Spice� event in November as well as being a sponsor of the Cricket Club! All in all, Sue and John have worked really hard to make the Nursery a part of the town and a part of the community, supporting local businesses whenever possible.

They now employ 14 staff, some of whom have had children of their own but still come back on a part time basis!

This summer saw the Nursery holding its first full Graduation Evening. Parents and grandparents of the children leaving to go to big school were invited to a formal evening with each child presented with a scroll and a DVD of their development at the Nursery leaving many parents with a tear in their eye! Children were able to pose in a Graduation gown and have a photo taken as a momento of their time at Wilsic Road.

The Nursery takes children from the age of 3 months to 5 years. They pride themselves on the number of different activities and opportunities they offer to the children. This year saw the introduction of Mini Kicks with children learning co-ordination, team building and physical activities with a qualified football coach. They also had a tutor to teach them some basic Italian and a visit from Zoolab with their exotic insects & reptiles!

Zumba Fitness Dance Craze Expands!

Not content to stay static in developing their skill with the dynamic calorie-burning Zumba Class, local Tickhill fans of the latin-inspired dance fitness classes requested their instructor bring them the new Zumba Toning Workout. Deborah was only too pleased to take the training and the new body sculpting Toning classes start in Tickhill on 4th November. Deborah explains that you still get the high energy cardio work with Latin-infused Zumba moves but strength training is also added into the mix to target zones such as abs, gluteus, arms and thigh areas. Just in time for getting to grips with fitness, weight loss and health goals in the run up to Christmas, the 7 week course is already proving popular with Zumba fans.

Many want to take the toning class right after their current Zumba class but Deborah is hoping that those new to Zumba might want to give it a try.

Those who would enjoy the benefits of seeing results in a relatively short period of time can engage with the challenging workout that helps build coordination and muscle endurance. Tickhill Estfeld Doncaster Junior Civic Mayor Recently all Year 6 pupils in Doncaster schools were asked to write in no more than 300 words what they would do to improve Doncaster for the people living in the town. From those applying one would be chosen to become the Junior Civic Mayor and accompany Councillor Eva Hughes, the Civic Mayor, on some of her official duties throughout the year.

Over 250 applications were received.

The quality of the entries was extremely high and from those entries 16 finalists were selected including one of our pupils, Joseph Pollard.

The chosen finalists were invited to the Mansion House to meet the Civic Mayor and were presented with a certificate commemorating the event. Joseph was delighted to receive his award and we are all very proud of his achievement.

Despite not being chosen as the Junior Civic Mayor, Joseph was not too disappointed and said that he considered it a great achievement to have reached the final stages. We couldn’t agree more. Well done Joseph and to all who entered the competition.

Good luck to Cordie Freeman from Mexborough who was invested as the Junior Civic Mayor.

Gardening at Estfeld Following a successful first growing season in our new raised beds our young gardeners are keen to ensure that they continue gardening. During the Summer term our pupils enjoyed eating their fruit of their labours. At lunch times we added salads and vegetables to the school meals menu and served our “Estfeld Salad” at the Summer barbecue. At the end of September we sold the last of our chard, tomatoes, carrots and broccoli to our parents, raising £7.10. Thank you to those who purchased our produce - we have used the proceeds to buy bulbs that will brighten up the school grounds next Spring.

Our gardeners are currently tidying up the beds before winter arrives and preparing the ground in the poly tunnel so that we can sow some early crops as Spring approaches.

Prom Fayre 6 October 2011 Wow! Our first ever Prom Fayre was a resounding success. Tickets were sold out for a fantastic show where students modelled prom dresses and suits like professionals! An update from Tickhill & District Lions As winter draws closer and the days shorter we can all look forward to the upcoming events that will be sure to put a smile on your face in November and over the Festive season.

As reported last month, we kick things offthas usual with our Bonfire and Fireworks night at The Oak pub which this year is on Saturday 5 November. The bonfire will be lit at 5.30pm with two fireworks displays; one at 6pm and the grand finale at 6.45pm. Entrance is free but donations are encouraged!

As usual over the festive season we’ll also be selling raffle tickets for our Grand Christmas Draw with fantastic prizes; 1st th prize: Kindle 3G e-reader, 2ndthprize: Wilfreda city break for two, rd 3 prize: £100 Food Hamper, 4 prize: £100 fuel voucher, 5 prize: 15lb Turkey. Plus there are lots of other prizes too! Tickets will be on sale in many shops around the area (look out for the posters) and the draw will be made at 9pm on the 13th of December at The Travelers’ Rest pub in Tickhill. I had steadily put on weight over the last 3 years. Fitness classes had never appealed to me. When I saw the fat loss bootcamp advert I thought everyone there would have the same aim as me. The two most appealing things to me were that it was outside in the dark, much better than being in a well lit hall where everyone can see how unfit you are.

Every camp we do something different.

Following the eating system was so easy as it didn't restrict how much you ate, just what you ate. I found that so much easier than being allowed a little bit of everything as, for me, a little bit inevitably leads to a lot more than a little. Rossington Hall Riding for the Disabled

We are based at the Northern Racing College near Bawtry, Doncaster. We are a small group with 5 horses which are used to give Disabled adults and children riding lessons on a weekly basis. We have approx 60 clients riding every week with all forms of disabilities. We have approximately 20 volunteers and two riding instructors. All of the volunteers are unpaid and volunteer because we all think it is a worthwhile cause. We are self sufficient and receive no financial help from RDA national.

We have been robbed 4 times this year. This time they took our field cleaning tools, self watering water troughs and Hay out of the storage shelter. All in all over this year we have had over ÂŁ1,000 worth of equipment stolen which we have had to replace out of our funds which are either donated or we have to fundraise for. We are devastated that we have been targeted yet again and wonder if the people who are doing this realise that they are taking enjoyment away from disabled people who love to come and ride the horses on a weekly basis.

We always in need volunteers who have a few hours a week to spare. You do not necessarily have to have experience of horses as we also need people to help with admin, hat fitting and sidewalking. If you can assist us at all please contact Sharon on 01302 759129 44| Tickhill Today

Charities supported by Will Aid include Action Aid, Age UK, British Red Cross, Christian Aid, NSPCC, Save the Children, SCIAF, Sight Savers and Trocaire.

Many clients come into the office to make a will saying that they have been meaning to do it for years. November 2011 is a good time to sort your will out. We will prepare a basic will free of charge and you the client make a donation to charity via Will Aid. There are limited appointments available for this but hopefully it will be a successful fund raiser for good causes.

Tickhill St Mary’s and the Community Our school needs you!

As a school we like to get involved with the community we live in as much as possible.

We have designed posters for things that concern the village such as littering and dog fouling, we sing at the late night opening before Christmas and we visit Age UK to sing to the elderly amongst many other things.

We are now looking for members of The community to get involved with us!

You may be aware of the new garden area by St Mary’s Road and we are looking for your help to create the garden and make it really beautiful. We would be most grateful for any advice you can give or any practical help you can offer in the form of planting, weeding and so on. We would like to fill it with flowers, plants and vegetables and would dearly love to start a gardening club. You may be able to help just as a one off or maybe you could make a regular commitment to help with weeding and such like, or even set up the gardening club! If anyone has any plants they could donate, we would also be grateful for those. The turf has now grown and is cut by the council but everything else will have to be done by the school. Doncaster Junior Mayor

Our Y6 children entered a competition for becoming Doncaster’s Junior Mayor. They had to write a letter to explain what they would do to make Doncaster a better place to live. Many schools across the borough entered and out of hundreds of entries two of our girls were chosen finalists. Their suggestions for making Doncaster a better place included more bins for litter and dog waste with bags provided to pick

it up with. More CCTV cameras to catch people behaving badly, painting dull and boring looking flats in nice colours and planting more flowers.

They were invited to the Mansion House in town and treated like VIP’s with refreshments served by maids in black dresses and white aprons, had doors held open for them and were given goody bags including a commemorative badge.

The winner was announced by the Civic Mayor, Eva Hughes and we are extremely proud to say our girls were runners up. Not only are we very proud that they beat hundreds of other contestants to be finalists but also that they feel so strongly about making our community a better place to live.

ickhill Horticultural Society Our September speaker Clifford Cain’s subject was “Growing Apples in a Small Garden” and he actually provided us with excellent advice on the growing of all fruit trees with special emphasis on the cordons and espaliers which enable us to make best use of available space. We were treated to a display of more than 90 different apples grown in Yorkshire and we enjoyed a tasting session of a number of these. Overall, a very interesting evening.

Our last two meetings of the year will be held a week later than normal. In order to avoid clashing with Taylor’s wine tasting evening, the “October” meeting will be on Thursday 3rd November when Dr Sue Kholer’s theme is “The Restoration of Sheffield Botanical Gardens Landscape” With the Late Night Shopping and Christmas Lights evening on the 24th November west will finish our programme for 2011 on Thursday 1 December with Desmond Mossop’s practical evening of “Christmas Seasonal Baskets” when you will be able to either make your own or sit and enjoy watching the others. Wadworth raises money for Africa!

Last Friday Wadworth Primary School raised a staggering £ 354 for Farm Africa (give poverty the boot). Everyone in the school had to bring £1 to come in normal clothes and wellies. All the money that we raised went straight to farm Africa. Through-out the week every class had a wellie inside the classroom so everyone could bring in loose change, and everything that was in the wellies also went to the fabulous charity. Almost everyone in the school including all of the teachers made an effort.

Mrs Moseley one of the ‘HLTA’ says ‘She was absolutely thrilled with the contribution that everybody made on Friday. School council and other pupils did a fantastic job of organising and helping with the activities and games.’

Considering that the games were only 10p each we are all overwhelmed that we made an extra £40 that we can add to our money that we raised. Mrs Clements the organiser and year 1 teacher said she thought ‘everybody had a really good time and that she really liked how everybody brought in lots of money for their wellies.’

Floods!

Flooding in Tickhill is still an unpleasant memory and a present fear. Are we any better protected if there is exceptional rainfall again? The Tickhill Residents’ Association has arranged an open public meeting to be held on Thursday 8 December in the Parish Room at 7.30 p.m. when Richard Ward, a drainage engineer from Doncaster MBC, will be our guest and you will have the opportunity to investigate the problem. All are welcome.

Some personal observations may encourage thought about questions that you could ask at the meeting. I cannot claim any engineering expertise but a cloudburst (especially in summer) seems to threaten us with two different causes of flooding and alleviation for each is different.

One is the sheer inability of the drains in many streets to cope with a sudden downpour. No doubt some of our drains may be a century or old, others date from the construction of more recent housing estates. Major expenditure on them is unlikely but it would be interesting to know whether their capacity is adequate. Equally regular and efficient cleaning is necessary.

How can we ensure that no parked vehicles block that cleansing?

The other, obviously, is the Mill Stream. It is probably the case that planners in the past allowed building on its flood plain but that is history. The source of the stream is in Braithwell but it also carries water from the quarries and from Maltby Colliery. A lifelong Tickhill resident pointed out some time ago that there are two tunnels under the railway embankment before the stream comes into Tickhill alongside the Rotherham Road. It is then in a single confined channel, which cannot be enlarged, until it reaches Water Lane where surplus water can spread out across track and fields. It is obvious that two streams of water will not go into one channel; after a cloudburst too much water comes too quickly into Tickhill and it is too late once it is here. If one of those tunnels under the disused railway embankment were blocked, hopefully the one channel we have should be adequate for the water which would then come through.

Perhaps you have better ideas! Please book the date and come along to make your contribution at this important meeting.

Charity Calendar

In an effort to raise funds for St John’s Hospice, a 2012 calendar has been produced by members of the Northern Society of Botanical Art, some of whose members live in Doncaster including two from Tickhill. Each month has a painting beautifully reproduced on fine quality card and all profits go to the Hospice. Sponsors have generously contributed to the printing costs increasing the amount of profit on each calendar sold.

Michael Massarella Speaks to Italian Society about Ice Cream and Family History Michael Massarella, a 4th generation Yorkshire Italian, will describe his family history and the migration of Italian ice cream producers to England at a meeting of local Italian Society, Voglia d’Italia, on Friday 4th November, 7.15 pm in Tickhill Pavilion.

In 1860, Giovanni Massarella and his three brothers established a business in South Yorkshire that became one of the largest ice cream producers in Europe. Michael is currently the Food Development Director of the present day family business, the Massarella Catering Group, and he takes a great interest in his family’s history and their migration to South Yorkshire.

Guests are most welcome to attend the event and the entrance fee for non-members is £3.

Voglia d’Italia is an Italian Society, based in South Yorkshire and North Notts, for people interested in all aspects of Italian culture.

People have much to worry about these days. There was a time when we used to say ‘Mustn’t grumble’ but now there is much more moaning and groaning. In a recent survey of lifestyles of ten nations Britain came bottom, even below Poland. This is because there is gloomy economic news everywhere, Europe is in crisis, the cost of living is soaring, taxes rise, there is distrust of politicians, massive youth unemployment, large increases in University tuition fees, telephone hacking scandals affecting the press and the police, great inequalities in incomes and banks paying obscene bonuses while failing to give loans to businesses or mortgages to people wanting to buy houses. Also the recent summer has given plenty of excuses for our national pastime of moaning about the weather. We are not wildly enthused about the Olympics, libraries are under threat, the BBC is having to slash its budgets and cut programmes and there have been riots in the streets. The National Heath Service could possibly be part privatised, the Planning laws may be weakened and we are led by a Coalition Government with internal tensions. Old people aren’t looked after properly and the nation is getting fatter.

As we grumble and gripe about whichever of these concerns bother us it may perhaps be worthwhile to wonder whether such gloom is really justified. We could note, for instance, that we live in a reasonably civilised democracy, there is a rule of law and a Human Rights Act. The army is not employed to oppress the people. Women do not need to walk four miles to get a pitcher of water, no-one is stranded on a corrugated iron roof as flood waters surge around with no hope of rescue for days. We have electricity at the touch of a switch and clean water at the turn of a tap. We do not fear an earthquake or a devastating hurricane. Our young sons are not kidnapped by militias and forced to become boy soldiers with guns. People are not impelled to flee their homes carrying a pathetic bundle of precious possessions to live in refugee camps on meagre food dished out by Aid Agencies. Our average life expectancy is double that in the developing world. We may hold peaceful protests but do not have to face teargas, tanks and guns in a vicious struggle to overthrow a cruel dictatorship. Despite a few complaints we generally enjoy a pretty good Health Service.

Of course we still need to be vigilant, to demand more honesty, fairer shares, better behaviour, more efficient government, higher professional standards, less criminal and anti-social behaviour. But we might also just pause now and then in the middle of our grumbling to count a few of our blessings and acknowledge how privileged we are.

other's Union Last month's Usborne Book Sale was a great success and £160 was raised to sen to the MU Overseas Literacy Fund. Tickhill MU also regularly send money from monthly donations to the general Overseas Fund administered by the MU and used to support local initiatives and provide help in emergencies. It was heartening to see in the media photographs of MU members in Africa, dressed in their distinctive blue uniforms, meeting to support Archbishop Rowan Williams during his recent visit to African Countries.

Christmas lunch this year has been booked for Wednesday 7th December at the Millstone, meeting at 12,30 p.m. for 1.00 p.m.

ickhill and District Local History Society

It is with great sadness that we record the recent death of Chris Garritt who was one of our committee members. Chris was well known and well liked in Tickhill and it is not just in the History Society that he will be sorely missed. We extend our deepest sympathy to his wife Ann and to their family at this difficult time.

The closing date for the November magazine is before our October meeting so a report on that meeting will have to wait until next month. However there is much else to talk about. Hazel Moffat, our Publications Editor has been busy (as always) and her latest Occasional Paper is an engrossing story about ten generations of the Laughton Family, once owners of Eastfield farm.

The family experienced much success and were generous benefactors to Tickhill people, but also faced sadness and turbulence with infant mortality and marital breakdown. 'The Laughton Family of Tickhill' is now available from KSM Card Gallery, Castlegate, price £2.

We have also produced a Binder for your Occasional Papers which will make them easier to store and with the words “Tickhill and District Local History Society Occasional Papers” on the spine will be an asset on any bookshelf. Each binder will take approximately 8 papers with clamp fastening which means there is no need for any hole punching. Binders are available price £2.99 from KSM and from the Library (See our advert below).

Our next meeting will be on November 17th when Deborah Moretti will talk about “Excavations at Rotherham Minster”. As usual the meeting will be held in the Methodist Schoolroom, Northgate, starting at 7.30 PM and visitors will be welcome.

Finally, our Christmas Social will be on Thursday 15th December at the Millstone. Good company, a hot buffet and good entertainment are on offer for £10 per head but numbers are limited so please make your booking at our November meeting or direct by phone to Dorothy Bradley on 01302 752429.

ickhill Scouts As I sit here in my garden waiting for groups of scouts and cubs running around the village taking part in the annual Phoenix Challenge I begin to ponder on the meaning of scouting today and its relevance to our young people. Teams of 4 to 5 scouts or cubs are visiting various locations around Tickhill to be both physically and mentally challenged. We have about 30 youngsters, male and female, aged between 9 and 14 being challenged by a number of 14 to 18 year olds. These young people’s parents are quite willing to let this happen trusting us to look after their children. This is one of the strengths of scouting.

We encourage youngsters to be self-reliant. We encourage parents to allow their youngsters to be looked after by, what in any other circumstance, would be strangers.

All this takes place on a Saturday afternoon. As it is not on the usual meeting night everyone gives up yet another day to provide yet another exciting event.

Over the past month the cubs have been following a programme of activities ranging from a basketball competition to pumpkin sculpture for Hallowe’en. The Scouts and Explorers are spending a night out at Parkgate Shopping Centre as part of their awareness of the young homeless. This event is organised in conjunction with the young homeless charity – Safe@Last.

Tickhill Town Council

The Audit of the Council’s finances is usually completed about this time of year and those for 2010/11 have just been finalised and the Certificate posted in the Town Notice Boards as required by law. At Tickhill the Responsible Financial Officer is the Clerk to the Council and for each monthly Council Meeting she prepares and distributes to all Councillors an up to date Statement of Receipts and Payments for the financial year to date. She also produces a list of payments due that month. which are compared by Councillors against the budget estimates and, provided they are satisfied that payment is due, two of them sign the appropriate cheques.

The Clerk ensures that there are always sufficient funds on the Council’s current account to meet the cheques with the balance of monies kept in interest bearing accounts with secure approved deposit takers.

The Councils’ finances are also monitored on a quarterly basis at a meeting of its Finance Committee whose own procedures plus the actual transaction books and bank information are scrutinized by an independent “internal” auditor at the year end before documents are sent to Government appointed Auditors for final certification.

A summary of Receipts and Payments for 2010-11 against budget with comparative figures for 2009/10 is shown on the next page. There were a few changes this year which had not been anticipated when the budget was drawn up: Income: Receipt of further monies from the Tree Appeal exceeded all expectations as did income from use of The Pavilion. Payment from the Capital Reserve was used to pay for the resurfacing of the Tennis Courts. As originally intended, the use of General Fund balances was used to finance the annual payment for the Christmas Lights.

Payments: The recruitment of a new Town Clerk included 2 months additional pay during the training period and payment of a Gratuity to the retiring Clerk. There were also additional costs involved in the recruiting process which increased administration costs.

Payment of the 2011-12 Insurance premium and the Town’s annual subscription to the Yorkshire Local Council Association one month early abnormally increased expenditure (although there will be a saving in the current year when the budgeted amount will not be paid).

Goodbye to a Tickhill Character

Clifford Kendall Deakin passed away peacefully on Sunday 28 th August aged 88 years.

Cliff was born and bred in Tickhill. He was born with a disability to his legs and following a visit to Harley Street when he was 4 years old and a subsequent unsuccessful operation he was told he would never be able to walk. Cliff promptly made himself a walking frame and started to push himself around the village. Although he was never able to walk properly he managed to get about on a pushbike and later on his beloved Royal Enfield motorbike.

Although Cliff struggled at school he wasn’t “thick” as he said he was. He was very practical, learnt from experience and could hold a good argument with anyone.

Cliff delivered to customers for the local butcher and sold ice cream by horse drawn vehicle for the Masserella family who owned racehorses and gave Cliff excellent betting tips!

In 1958 Cliff started bicycle repairs and earned the name “The Midnight Mechanic” as he often worked into the early hours. He said “I eat when I want to; I drink when I want to, work and sleep when I want to”. Cliff’s constant companion for many years was his dog Ruffchops and he enjoyed a pint in the pubs around the village and meals at the Millstone.

Cliff overcame many setbacks in his life including the loss of both his parents at an early age, a fire at his home, a spell in prison for non payment of council tax, and the amputation of both legs. Despite all of this he often said “I’ve never worried in me life” and “I’ve had a wonderful life”. “Ay up smiler” was one of his common greetings His family and many friends feel it has been a privilege to know such a colourful character and give thanks for the life of Clifford Kendall Deakin (a Tickhill gentleman) who lived his life ‘HIS WAY’.
