Welcome to the

December 2019 edition

Today

The December magazine already and the last magazine of the decade!

Deli 28 - for those unique bespoke gifts

I am no more organised for Christmas than I ever am at this point, but I am sure that as always, everything essential will eventually get done. December marks 39 years since I first moved to Tickhill, and became a pupil at St Marys School - the day after their Christmas party. I’ve never forgotten that it was decided that starting on the day of the party wasn’t a good idea, so I missed out on a school Christmas party that year! Tickhill remained my home until I moved to Birmingham to attend University, before work took me to Cambridgeshire, Guernsey and the Isle of Man, and it is now 15 years since I returned to live in Tickhill to bring my family up here. It means that it is also getting close to 15 years since Tickhill Today began, and we will be celebrating that milestone with the March 2020 issue.

The January issue will be delivered to you between Christmas and New Year. If you would like to have something included in this, please make sure details are with me by Friday 6th December. We do work to a slightly different time scale with this issue as they have to be printed and delivered back to me, sorted and delivered to my team of distributors before Christmas, so as always, your assistance in getting everything to me on time would be much appreciated. Wishing you and your family and friends a very happy Christmas. Enjoy the Christmas festivities and I will be back in a months’ time with your first magazine of 2020!

a Best wishes,Paul

My name is Holly and I am the Vice Club Captain for Bircotes swimming club. I love swimming, it’s my hobby, my passion and it’s basically been my life for as long as I can remember. I started swimming as a baby with my mum and kept working hard at it, getting all my stages and then going onto to join Club swimming.

Invite you to join us for an

Wednesday 4th December 2019 At 7 pm In Tickhill Methodist Church 8

Next May I will have been a competitive swimmer for 6 years. My favourite part about swimming is the competitions we attend together: not only is it a day to race against your own times and get amazing personal bests, it’s also about being able to spend time with friends you have met through swimming, who will be there for you no matter what. A few weeks ago, Bircotes Swimming Club attended the Peter Jervis meet in Retford; all the athletes who took part in the competition had been training hard in sessions so they could go in with the best possible chance of getting a personal best. That hard work payed off since 60% of all the swimmers got personal bests and came away very pleased with themselves. Over the October half term our Head Coach arranged three extra training sessions, to improve the stamina and speed of the athletes ready for the Remembrance meet in Scunthorpe, on the 10th of November (pictured). We had 30 plus swimmers at this meet, three of them achieving above and beyond! Leon and Jake achieved County times for next year (50m freestyle for Leon, and 50m backstroke for Jake) and Liam managed to achieve a sub-30 s time in his 50m freestyle. What great achievements! Our Club did so well that every single athlete walked out with either a personal best or a medal. Massive well done to all the swimmers. On the 16th of November, Bircotes Swimming Club are holding two events, a Sponsored Swimathon and a Triathlon to raise money for The St Giles school in Retford and for our Club. The Swimathon will take place over 3 hours and the swimmers will have to swim as far as they can in that time. We are estimating that the top swimmers will do around 5-6 miles. The triathlon is also taking place at the same time. This event entails a 600m swim (30 lengths), a 6km bike ride using the gym bikes and then a 2.4km run around the sports hall. These events are for having a bit of fun whilst doing the sports we love and raising money for great causes. If you would like more information about the Club and would like to attend for a trial please email our Club Secretary on bircotesswimclub@gmail.com

If you have an interest in the arts and would like to learn more, please come along to one of our meetings. We have monthly Lecture meetings (on the first Wednesday of the month, except for summer and winter breaks) and two extra, Special Interest days. We also have trips out to places of interest and a holiday for Members. Our Wednesday, 4th December Lecture is about the Ballet Russes, with speaker Sandy Burnett best known as a BBC radio 3 presenter Shaken by an earthquake: Igor Stravinsky, the Ballet Russes and the astonishing 1913 premiere of the rite of Spring. This is the story of one of the greatest creative collaborations of all: Serge Diaghilev’s Ballet Russes, whose team of dancers, choreographers and costume/set designers transform the expectations of what a night at the theatre could be and the circumstances behind its most notorious stage work of all. We also have another extra, Christmas themed Lecture, followed by a Lunch on 13th December is titled ‘ Gold, Frankincense and Myrrh - why these gifts? ‘ Tom Duncan will talk about when the ‘ Three Wise Men ‘came to do homage to the newly born Jesus, what did they bring as gifts and why? Gold is perhaps not too difficult to comprehend – a gesture of honour made at great cost. But, why Frankincense and Myrrh? These are actually more exotic items, though the purpose of which is less understood. This is an extra meeting - Tickets are being sold, Members and guests to pay for either the Lecture alone ( £ 6 ) or the Lecture and Lunch ( £ 14 )

Doncaster Cancer Detection Trust T

December is usually a time of reflection (in between the hectic preparations for Christmas!) and we look back on a very busy year. With your help we were able to inform DRI at the beginning of the year that we had the money for another CT scanner. The new CT unit should be operational by March 2020 and we will keep you updated. In April we launched our prostate cancer appeal for a £150,000 biopsy machine, which at the time of writing (beginning of November) had reached £40,000. We are very fortunate to have the continuing support of so many groups, organisations and individuals who fundraise and offer help in many ways. Also our lovely friendly volunteers (we have no paid staff) who do so much during the year, without whose unstinting loyalty we would not be able to function. Our annual Memory Tree event in the Frenchgate Centre continues during December until Friday, 20th December. We are downstairs outside Boots from 10am to 3pm Monday to Saturday. Please come along and see us, have a chat and buy a token in memory of your loved one. If you would like to get in touch with us our contact details are: 22 Wood Street, Doncaster DN1 3LW (entrance by the side of Kerry Gough Florists), second floor (lift available), Room 209. Tel. 01302 325029. Email: info@dcdt.co.uk. Website: dcdt.co.uk. Thank you all so much for your generosity, friendship and help. Our charity strives to raise funds to help faster detection and improve cancer treatment for local people. We wish you all a very happy Christmas and hopefully a healthy New Year.

We meet at the Civic Centre, Long Lane, Carlton-inLindrick S8219AP. Coffee is served from 10am and the Lecture is from 11 am to 12 noon approx. Free car parking.

EVACUATED!

Year 3 have had a fun-filled term at school as we imagined life as one of Robin Hood’s merry men during our overnight residential trip to the historical landmark, Sherwood Forest. On our first day in Sherwood we walked, ran and galloped for hours in search for the legendary Robin Hood, visited the incredible Major Oak, and dared to climb the tallest trees in the forest. In the evening, we embarked on a night walk through the forest and hid from the

Evil Sheriff of Nottingham, and his men. The following day was spent building and testing out dens that we would be able to live and survive in… a real challenge in Strong Gareth’s strong winds! Overall, we thoroughly enjoyed our first residential trip to Sherwood Forest. It really brought the tale of Robin Hood to life, and gave us memories that will last a lifetime.

POTTERIC CARR Year One went to Potteric Carr on Thursday 12th September. We had a fantastic time completing a range of activities such as pond

Remembrance Day at Estfeld Primary School 2019

Each year we commemorate Remembrance Day in school with a special assembly. In the weeks leading up to the assembly our pupils learn about those who have served and who continue to serve our country, and of the sacrifices that they have made to ensure that we live in safety and peace. Our assembly is timed so that we can observe the two minutes’ silence at 11 o clock; this is followed by a celebration of the work that they have produced. This year our school has created a Remembrance Garden as a year-round reminder. The garden project was led by Mrs Welborn and Mrs Collier who worked with our pupils and our caretaker Mr Perkins to create the garden. The garden is planted with the many plants, bulbs and seeds that our families generously donated. The colour scheme of red and white was chosen as red represents Remembrance, whilst white represents Peace; the plants have also been selected so that they should flower throughout the year.

18

The garden is next to the main entrance so that not only are our staff, pupils and their families able to see and enjoy the garden, but our many visitors too. Maybe they will also be able to spend a moment or two to reflect on its significance. It is wonderful to see the respect, understanding and empathy that our pupils display, not only when observing the silence but also and when talking about their work and listening to the thoughts of others in class and in assembly. We are proud to be teaching our pupils values for life. Likewise, we were very proud of those pupils who represented both schools in Tickhill at the Remembrance Service at St. Mary’s Church on the Sunday morning. Thank you to all involved in creating the garden and to those who will maintain it in the months to come.

Dear Friends

T

As we approach the season of Christmas surrounded as we are by the distractions of sparkly decorations, late night shopping, and the latest Christmas ‘must haves’ (last year a pre-lit tree, before that a Christmas jumper) and the pressure of endless to-do lists, relentless ‘special Christmas offers’, the reality of spiralling costs and smaller family budgets, and longer and longer present lists, it is hard to hold on to - in fact in some quarters we have lost sight of - what has become known as the real meaning of Christmas. Sadly, Christmas no longer means angel and Mary, stable and baby, shepherd and star. I am reminded of the old, favourite hymn: ‘Who is He, in yonder stall, at whose feet the shepherds fall?’ I genuinely believe that we are becoming increasingly unable to answer this question. All the preparations for, and the celebration of, the mainstream, marketing- led Christmas (which seem to start earlier and earlier every year) are now so far removed from real reason for the season that the story of Jesus has become practically invisible and perhaps to most, irrelevant. Replaced by a trashy, tinselly commerce driven nothing, a no-thing. But Christmas is not just stable, baby, and star: it is much more. As the hymn writer says: ‘’Tis the Lord! O wondrous story! ‘Tis the Lord! The King of Glory! ‘At his feet we humbly fall; crown Him, crown Him Lord of all.’ Christmas celebrates the coming of God amongst us, the beginning of the path to our Salvation and our eternal destiny in the heavenly kingdom and the nearer presence of God. And this has to be worth celebrating. But could I suggest a radically different, alternative way, with carol singing, nativity plays, Christingles, midnight Mass? All of which put the Christ back into Christmas. We cannot go on allowing ourselves to be manipulated by marketing. It is time to stop the shopping (does granny really want a two-foot high panettone?) And it is time to change our focus and priorities from getting to giving, from me to my community and from commerce to Christ Jesus. May the joy of the angels, the wonder of the shepherds, the richness of the wise men, the love of Mary and Joseph, the peace of the Christ Child be yours this Christmas.

Pastor of Tickhill, Harworth and Bawtry Methodist Churches

KEEPING FIT IS GOOD FOR YOUR MIND AS WELL AS YOUR BODY! There is plenty of information around at the moment about mental health and how it is good to talk but we here at Blizard Physiotherapy really believe that keeping fit is vitally important for your general mental well-being. Daily physical activity helps us to feel good about ourselves and gives us a sense of achievement even if it is only a brisk ten minute daily walk.

Participation in regular physical activity can increase our self-esteem and can reduce stress and anxiety. The main things to consider when choosing a form of physical activity is making time daily for exercise, is it the right type of fun activity that is going to be manageable moving forward and is it the right type of exercise for you? Our best advice is choosing something you like doing, start slowly and make it part of your daily lifestyle and consider making some short term goals that you can try to work towards. Break it into three sections of exercise you can do at home, at work and when out and about and you will soon start working on a program! Good luck

LIFESTYLE

Dazzle this Christmas There’s nothing like glittering sequins, sparkling diamantes and shiny precious metals to give you instant glamour and brighten your spirits through the winter nights. The party season is fast approaching so it’s SEQUINS of course! “Sequin” originated from the Arabic word sikka, meaning “coin,” later becoming the Venetian word zecchino. In the late 16th century, it morphed into the French word ‘sequin’ as we know today. In 1922, archaeologists opened the tomb of Egyptian pharaoh Tutankhamun, revealing splendid garments embellished in gold metal discs. Western fashion later reflected the dazzling artefacts in King Tut’s tomb and 1920’s Flappers’ dresses were often embellished with hundreds of metal sequins. Christmas Party Dresses fall in to a number of categories: 50’s and 60’s retro style for those who love to look lady like; 70’s Disco Queen for those who want to sparkle; minimalist for those who love that understated look; and of course, not forgetting the Little Black Dress. The Little Black Dress is hard to resist, but is it really flattering? For decades the LBD has been

28

the failsafe garment of choice for women everywhere. It’s simple, slimming, chic and above all a ‘safe bet’ - but the colour black does not flatter most people. The majority of British women will not look young and healthy with black worn close to their faces. In fact, it can be dramatically ageing. Many women have relied on their trusty LBD for years, but before you buy the new black dress, here’s a useful tip to tell if black really suits you: Hold black up against your face, stand in front of the mirror and look for dark lines under the chin, shadows around the eyes or lines on the face that are highlighted. If there are no dark areas or shadows, you can probably wear black close to your face and look great. Another sign that black suits you is if you have dark “crypts” or “spokes” in the iris of your eyes. Those who fit into that category will be able to wear their LBD to their hearts’ content, but the rest of you take care!

in anything else - particularly with the party season approaching the LBD will once again dominate the scene. But finding a dress in YOUR right colour is the most flattering thing you could do for yourself this season. The Christmas party season is perfect for a dazzling dress and a great alternative to black. If a sparkly dress is not for you then you could try interesting accessories which are the easiest way to add sparkle to winter outfits whether for daytime or evening. Attractive accessories can really set off a very simple outfit. The sequin clutch bag is still a popular choice for Christmas and there are lots more new designs to enjoy this year.

Black is a highly controversial subject. It gives the illusion of Sue Burton making women look slimmer. Designers will have us believe Award-winning Stylist & Image that it’s THE colour of this Consultant season and you mustn’t be seen www.colourstyleanalysis.com

Tickhill & District Male Voice Choir Tickhill & District Male Voice Choir is available to perform concerts for any occasion – please contact Martin on 07588 887771 or Phillip on 01302 743468, all enquiries and bookings would be welcomed. Our concert on Friday 1st November at Bawtry Methodist Church was enjoyed by a decent sized audience. The choir gave a mixed programme which was well appreciated. Three solos were also rendered, sang by Martin Lord, Phillip Randall and Chris Buley. The performance was led as usual by our Music Director, Gwynneth Platts and accompaniment was by Janet Skinner and Stephen Bilton, assisted by Ann Gray. Members of Bawtry Methodist Church provided refreshments to complete a good evening. On Saturday 30th November we are hosting a Choral Workshop, led by Steven Roberts, from 10.00 am to 4.00 pm at the Village Hall, Wadworth, DN11 9BW with some members of other male voice choirs joining us. The event is open to anyone wishing to attend at a cost of £15.00 per person. Tea or coffee will be provided during registration from 9.30 am onwards and a buffet lunch can be pre-ordered at an additional cost of £5.00. If this event is anywhere near as good as the previous one we hosted then it should not be missed! Anyone wishing to attend should contact our secretary, Phillip Randall – telephone 01302 743468. We then commence our very busy Christmas programme during December with a visit to HMP Doncaster on the afternoon of Thursday 5th and on the afternoon of Wednesday 11th we will be bringing some Christmas cheer to patients at St. John’s Hospice, Tickhill Road, Balby. Our Annual Christmas Concert at Tickhill Methodist Church, Northgate, Tickhill, entitled “A Christmas Box of Songs” commences at 7.30 pm on Saturday

T

14th,– tickets are priced at £7.00 each inclusive of refreshments (to reserve yours please call Phillip on 01302 743468 or Martin on 01302 851455). DO NOT MISS this wonderful occasion. We look forward to seeing you all there. Following that we will as usual be singing at the Lessons and Carols service in the Chapel at Bassetlaw Hospital, which is streamed out on the hospital radio station Trust AM, on Monday 16th, commencing at 7.00 pm. Finally we will be singing Christmas Carols at Morrison’s, Watervole Way (near White Rose Way Park & Ride) from 11.00 am to 1.00 pm collecting towards our charity donation. By this time we will all be ready for a good rest before resuming rehearsals on Monday 6th January 2020. Due to a gradual reduction in our membership over the past year, despite having recruited three new members, recruitment is on our minds. We are always eager to welcome new members and invite men of any age to come and join us - so do come along and enjoy the camaraderie of singing in a four part choir (Bass, Baritone & two Tenor parts). It has been proven that singing regularly can improve one’s health and wellbeing. All prospective new members are most welcome to attend our rehearsals which are held each Monday evening in the Schoolroom to the rear of the Methodist Church, Northgate, Tickhill from 7.30 to 9.30 pm. Remember, it is not necessary to have the ability to read music or to have any previous experience, but we would be pleased to welcome anyone who does have experience in singing with other choirs. If you require any further information please do not hesitate to contact our secretary, Phillip Randall – telephone 01302 743468 or our chairman, Martin Lord – telephone 07588 887771 or just come along to one of our weekly rehearsals. We look forward to seeing you there!!

Tickhill and District Male Voice Choir wish you all a very Happy and Peaceful Christmas.

Hello from Mayflower

This is the story of our dog Kimmy that we rescued at the beginning of the year. I am 6 years old and lived in Romania for most of my life. My owners were very cruel to me and my life was dreadful and harsh. I was made to live outside on the concrete with no shelter or bedding in all weathers sun, rain and snow. The people I lived with would not let me indoors and would hurt me by kicking and beating me if I tried to get past them into the warm dry house. A very kind lady witnessed their cruelty to me on a regular basis and asked my owners if she could have me. Luckily they agreed and my saviour fostered me until a place became available at Mayflower Sanctuary in England. When I arrived at Mayflower I was scared of everything and everybody. Jennie the owner decided I was too stressed to be put into the Sanctuary so I stayed with her and her dogs. She said I needed to learn to trust people but this took a long time. I had never had a bed of my own and now I was allowed on Jennies bed, so I felt I was in heaven. I didn’t move far from this bed for a long time though, I think I was frightened my new friends would steal my spot. Eventually Jennie went on holiday and some other people moved in to take care of us all. They were very nice to me and I felt safe and a little more confident. When Jennie came home they asked if I could go to stay with them and their dog and cats for a little while to see how we all got on together. From that day my life began, I now have a forever home with my new mum, dad and sister called Heart she was a street dog in Cyprus (we did struggle with the language barrier at first but we now get along fine together) I also have great fun with the cats Tizzy, Cleo and Milly they like to lick my face to say hello. My mum takes us both for walks which we love, but we both hate the cold and rain so our mum makes us wear a warm jacket, we probably have

bad memories of another harsh life. We also have lots of treats from people we meet on our walks as well as treats at home, but our nice vet said we are both getting a little podgy, (I am not sure what that means ) but mum says we need to walk more and cut down on the treats for a while.. I now have a bed of my own which is very cosy (but mum and dad’s bed is even better). I have my own food bowl and toys and lots of love. I am loving my cosy new life, however it will take a long time to forget and trust completely again. I am looking forward to my first Christmas curled up on the sofa in the warm with my new mum, dad, sister and furry friends. I am hoping Santa will visit me for the first time in my life too. Happy Christmas and love from Kimmy. I hope you all enjoyed Kimmy’s story which is not unlike many of the dogs we bring in from Romania. Jennie the Sanctuary manager was there to rehabilitated her when she first arrived and without that one to one help Kimmy would not have grown into the dog she is today.

Pacha was rehomed from Mayflower as a youngster and has spent 2 wonderful years in her home. During this time she has shared her home with another cat. Unfortunately, several months ago, he was involved in a car accident and had to spend a couple of weeks in the hospital. Fortunately he recovered and returned but this wasn’t good news for Pacha as he started to attack her at every opportunity. Things got so bad that Pacha was afraid to come into the house and her owner was having to feed her outside and ‘sneak’ her indoors Pacha was becoming depressed so, although her owner loved her deeply, it was arranged for her to back into our care. She has settled well and, although still a little nervous, she is a treasure to have around. Pacha was able to go outside in her former home so a secure garden to explore away from busy roads is required for her new home.

There are lots of dogs that have nowhere to call home that need our help, the lucky ones are in our rescue centres and will hopefully be given a second chance of a family life. We shall continue to do our utmost and rescue as many dogs as possible both locally and further afield. The Sanctuary need more home visitors to check potential new homes for families that have chosen a dog, making sure that the dog and family are a good match, training will be given and petrol paid if required. Interested ? Please call us on 01302 711330 for a chat. A huge thank you to everyone that has supported us throughout the year, both staff, kennel carers and the many volunteers. Best Wishes for a Merry Christmas and a Peaceful New Year

We didn’t get along so it wasn’t an option for me to move with her. I have found it difficult to settle here and preferred to hide away in my bed. It was all so scarey but its not so bad now. I quite like to sit on my chair and watch the world go by – especially when the sun is shining. Perhaps I could do the same from your windowsills. All I need is a little time and patience for my true personality to come shining through. The wait will be worth it. My carer says that there’s a cuddle cat hiding in here somewhere, it just needs a little persuasion to come out. In the meantime I’ll just sit here and wait. Please don’t make me wait too long.

“All we have are memories” We welcomed several newcomers to Tickhill Music Society’s piano recital by the Lithuanian, Ugnius Pauliukonis - and what a treat we were all in for! Performing since being six years young, he filmed this performance as part of working towards his International Artist Diploma. A lengthy pause before he started the first piece, well-articulated Haydn, heightened expectations. Before continuing with the more romantic repertoire of Chopin, Debussy and Dvarionas, he informed us of his theme for the first half: water. As if we hadn’t seen enough of the wet stuff lately! The Haydn coda was based on water; Chopin’s Etude is known as “waterfall” (descending chords of the right hand over the river’s arpeggios of the left); Debussy’s Reflections in the Water (ending on both banks at the furthest stretches of the keyboard); the Lithuanian composer’s The First Snowflakes perhaps stretching the point a little but worthy for the sheer virtuosity required. So were we looking forward to the second half? Well, it was all Chopin - but proved to be delightfully varied. Ugnius introduced us to the dance motif, starting with a Ballade of gentle lilt - though with great dynamics to come. Ugnius explained that while Mazurkas are Polish folk dances, they are really leaves from Chopin’s past and, as he claimed, “all we have are memories”. Four Mazurkas followed with a real spring in their steps. Introducing the Etudes, Ugnius kindly explained that no.5 was

nicknamed “wrong note” so we were prepared, this time the left hand taking the melody and the right expansive arpeggios, reversing “waterfall”. He invited us to try the octaves in both hands demanded by no.10! We are not all blessed with Rachmaninov’s hands, unlike this remarkable pianist. Finally the Scherzo, “like a summary of the second half” and an apt conclusion to this exceptional recital as Ugnius gazed towards the heavens, transporting us all to a place where indeed memories are made.

Tickhill Horticultural Society

T

Where did the summer go? The clocks have gone back and it’s dark before the afternoon is over!

We are offering a pie and peas supper after the AGM business is concluded, so please let Pat know at the December meeting so we know how much to order.

Even so, the autumn and winter can have its beauty, albeit in a totally different way to the summer. I write this the day after Bonfire Night, spending a week in the Lakes. The leaves on the hillsides are a multitude of different shades of green, brown and red, with all colours in between, and there is a certain childish glee in kicking piles of leaves up as you walk along the paths!

I would to thank our membership of over a hundred for continuing to support the Horticultural Society throughout 2019 and hope that we will see you all again next year.

I set off on my journey the day after our October meeting, at which Don Witton gave us a terrific slideshow and talk on gardens and plants throughout the year. An extensive plant list gave us plenty for the shopping list next spring, as well as some good ideas for trips over the next twelve months. Never mind “where did the summer go” – where did the YEAR go? We now have only one meeting remaining this year – and as usual, the November meeting is delayed by a week due to the latenight shopping in Tickhill, which accompanies the switching on of the Christmas lights. We hope to see as many as possible on Thursday, 5th December, when John and Gail Summerfield will be our speakers. Their presentation is entitled “Winter Whys and a Quiz”, so it sounds as though you will be tasked with finding some answers! To get in the seasonal mood, there will be some warm mince pies provided, so it should be a very enjoyable evening. Looking a little further ahead, our AGM will take place on Thursday, 30th January, when we will be able to let you all know the list of speakers for 2020. Having had an exclusive preview of what is planned, there should be something to interest everyone. As I mentioned last time, the titles that don’t sound appealing turn out to be the most interesting of all!

52

Many of you will have met Rev Andy Earl at the Horticultural Show in September, when he accompanied Rev Ali, who opened the Show for us. Andy is a chaplain with the Army and based in Preston, where he provides pastoral care for the soldiers there, which includes a number who are suffering from post-combat stress and worries. There are a few of the soldiers who want to start up an allotment, and Andy has asked me if we can help them. They have drawn up a plan of what they want to do, and they are doing the manual labour, but Andy is wondering if we can help in supplying some plants for them to use, whether fruit and veg or flowers. If you’re tidying up and have a few plants you don’t want any more, or sow just a few too many seeds early next year, that’s exactly what we’re after! I have already received some offers of help, which proves what generous people we have here in Tickhill. If anyone else has anything they can give to this worthwhile cause, please let me know at any forthcoming meeting and I can arrange collection and forwarding them on to Preston. We keep being told that gardening is a therapeutic activity, and is good for the relief of stress, as well as being a bit of exercise, so it sounds like a great cause. We are approaching the season of peace and goodwill, so let’s see if we can give these lads the boost they need to recover. We wish you all best wishes for the Christmas and the New Year and hope to see you all again in January.

COMMUNITY

Newsletter

Tickhill Town Council - December 2019

As you read this December Newsletter you will probably be well into your Christmas plans and activities. We will be about to have the Christmas Lights switch on and the Late-Night shopping event which are firmly fixed on the Council Agenda. We are proud that businesses, residents and friends really show the true Christmas spirit and join in the festivities that put Tickhill to the forefront in the Doncaster Area. Council business carries on throughout the seasons but does slow down a little at this time of year. The first meeting in the New Year is our budget meeting at which we discuss finances and workloads for the year. Many thanks to my fellow Councillors and Clerk, for all their contribution to our community affairs. We have also a very strong Pavilion team, who are committed to serving the community, and our thanks to Margaret, Responsible Financial Officer, who is now semi-retired, keeping the accounts in order. We must also thank the hard work of Tickhill Together, the Tickhill in Bloom Group, and all the other groups and societies for their efforts that make Tickhill a wonderful place to live. During the year, in addition to our regular monthly Council and subcommittee meetings, we continually meet the Neighbourhood Team and Borough Councillors at the Partnership meetings and, of course, we are also indebted to all those who contribute to the bi-monthly Advisory Committee. The Council meetings always commence with a full fifteen minutes Public session entirely for the public to raise their issues. If you have any concerns please come along to the Council meetings, you will be made most welcome. There is also a meeting monthly, dedicated to planning matters. Please look at the notice board and Website for dates and times of all meetings. Although the Council try to keep the dates and times uniform, as in all matters, we have to adopt a shifting sands attitude and be prepared to fit in with the majority. We are looking forward to seeing you all at the Carol Service on the Buttercross, Christmas Eve, 7.00pm. The Council, Clerk and Pavilion team wish you all a very peaceful and contented Christmas and New Year.

HELP! Our leaders, all unpaid volunteers, would really appreciate some assistance. You don’t need to be Bear Grylls to join us. You don’t need to have been a Scout. You don’t even need to know how to put up a tent or tie a knot. Everyone is welcome to come along and join in making drinks, supervising crafts, running games or just being there to encourage and support. We will show you how. Volunteer today and help us prepare more young people with skills for life. The Cubs have been busy making poppies for Remembrance Day and painting stones with poppies for distribution around Tickhill. The poppies were fixed to lamp posts and telegraph poles close to St Mary’s Church and the stones were placed in the churchyard. The Cubs took part in a 10 pin bowling competition and, as a team, came third overall out of around 20 entrants. Our Beavers, Cubs and Scouts are all working to make a Christmas Tree for the Christmas

60

Tree festival. This will be a truly rustic creation. As well as being on display during the festival it will be part of the Scout and Guide annual carol service on December 9th in St Mary’s Church.

Long before people visit a Foodbank they stop buying toiletries T

Basic hygiene is about dignity. No-one should be left struggling to wash their hair, brush their teeth, change their baby’s nappy or afford sanitary protection because they are blighted by low wages, high housing costs, benefit cuts, illness or bereavement. Hygiene poverty is shaming, excluding and isolating and the work of The Hygiene Bank directly benefits those in crisis. Tickhill Community Library is an official drop off point for donations to The Hygiene Bank and items donated there will be distributed to those in need in the local Doncaster area. The work of the charity has been extended to help those in need due to flooding.

If you are in a position to do so please help give the gift of dignity this Christmas.
