The December magazine already and the last magazine of the decade! I am no more organised for Christmas than I ever am at this point, but I am sure that as always, everything essential will eventually get done. I am looking forward to relaxing for a few days between Christmas and New Year and I know that I am very lucky to be able to do this. There will be many people working hard throughout the Christmas period keeping all our essential services running, caring for others, serving in our armed forces and providing services that are available 365 days a year – 366 next year! The January issue will be delivered to you between Christmas and New Year. If you would like to have something included in this, please make sure details are with me by Friday 6th December. We do work to a slightly different time scale with this issue as they have to be printed and delivered back to me, sorted and delivered to my team of distributors before Christmas, so as always, your assistance in getting everything to me on time would be much appreciated.

Arts Society Dukeries T
If you have an interest in the arts and would like to learn more, please come along to one of our meetings. We have monthly Lecture meetings (on the first Wednesday of the month, except for summer and winter breaks) and two extra, Special Interest days. We also have trips out to places of interest and a holiday for Members. Our Wednesday, 4th December Lecture is about the Ballet Russes, with speaker Sandy Burnett best known as a BBC radio 3 presenter Shaken by an earthquake: Igor Stravinsky, the Ballet Russes and the astonishing 1913 premiere of the rite of Spring. This is the story of one of the greatest creative collaborations of all: Serge Diaghilev’s Ballet Russes, whose team of dancers, choreographers and costume/set designers transform the expectations of what a night at the theatre could be and the circumstances behind its most notorious stage work of all. We also have another extra, Christmas themed Lecture, followed by a Lunch on 13th December is titled ‘ Gold, Frankincense and Myrrh - why these gifts? ‘ Tom Duncan will talk about when the ‘ Three Wise Men ‘came to do homage to the newly born Jesus, what did they bring as gifts and why? Gold is perhaps not too difficult to comprehend – a gesture of honour made at great cost. But, why Frankincense and Myrrh? These are actually more exotic items, though the purpose of which is less understood. This is an extra meeting - Tickets are being sold, Members and guests to pay for either the Lecture alone ( £ 6 ) or the Lecture and Lunch ( £ 14 ) We meet at the Civic Centre, Long Lane, Carlton-inLindrick S8219AP. On Saturday 26th October the Phoenix Theatre in Bawtry staged a Variety Show for the benefit of Residents who reside at Bennfield House Nursing Home in Thorne. The proceeds are to purchase Christmas presents to ensure that they have a lovely time. The evening was spectacular and the house was full. Our grateful thanks go to the compere for the evening Mr Bob Geeson and the ladies and gents, girls and boys who performed. Myself, along with staff and some of the residents attended and were seated on the front row. We had a great evening. Thank you so very much for the hard work that was put into this show for us. The stars of the show were: Colin Grace – Ukulele Tony Jones – Storyteller Kim Kendal – Singer Charlotte Fricker – Singer Jonah Thompson – Singer Reach for the stars – Dance class. Bawtry Young Players: Hannah Laszkowicz, Martha Atkinson, Sally Shaw, Oakley Knighton, Naomi Wormald, Jacob Crofts, Iris Bagilhole, Millie Rhodes, Tom Proctor, Amelia McMillan, Bryony Dale, Oliver Willis, Caitlin Deakin and Bethan Carter – Singers. There was an anonymous benefactor who matched the money raised giving a total of almost £800. Thank you so much to that lady or gentleman. Everyone has been so kind and generous. Bawtry Garden Club T
At our November meeting, Harold Leach, from Lincolnshire, showed us how we could transform our gardens in the winter. He showed us numerous slides of various plants, shrubs and trees that were perfect for providing much needed colour in our gardens over the winter period. Certainly food for thought! At our meeting on 3rd December, James Wood is joining us to demonstrate making a Christmas flower arrangement. This will be followed with ‘festive’ refreshments. We continue to meet the first Tuesday of the month in the Methodist Church Hall at 7 pm. BAWTRY Our October meeting told us the story of Arbella Stuart- one of political intrigue and tragedy. My first mistake was thinking she was called Arabella but I now know better! The speaker was David Templeman,a local historian from Sheffield, who volunteers at Manor Lodge where Mary, Queen of Scots was held for a while. Arbella, a descendant of Henry V11 was born of royal blood into the Stuart family in 1575. She was orphaned by the age of six and was then brought up by her grandmother Bess of Hardwick in the belief that she was to be the future Queen of England. However Arbella fell out of favour at the court of Queen Elizabeth and was sent back to Hardwick where she remained a virtual prisoner for several years. During these years she became involved in various Catholic plots to restore the monarchy into the Catholic faith.

When James 1 became King he was concerned that if Arbella was allowed to marry any of her children could threaten his dynasty but at the age of 35 she secretly married William Seymour. This union united the blood lines of both of Henry VIII’s sisters and any child would have had a very strong claim to the throne. William was imprisioned in the Tower and Arbella banished to Durham. After a failed escape attempt Arbella was also sent to the tower where she sadly starved herself to death. David set the scene of the tumultuous timeswhere it was not a good time to be a woman with a claim to the throne! I started swimming as a baby with my mum and kept working hard at it, getting all my stages and then going onto to join Club swimming.

Next May I will have been a competitive swimmer for 6 years. My favourite part about swimming is the competitions we attend together: not only is it a day to race against your own times and get amazing personal bests, it’s also about being able to spend time with friends you have met through swimming, who will be there for you no matter what. A few weeks ago, Bircotes Swimming Club attended the Peter Jervis meet in Retford; all the athletes who took part in the competition had been training hard in sessions so they could go in with the best possible chance of getting a personal best. That hard work payed off since 60% of all the swimmers got personal bests and came away very pleased with themselves. Over the October half term our Head Coach arranged three extra training sessions, to improve the stamina and speed of the athletes ready for the Remembrance meet in Scunthorpe, on the 10th of November (pictured). We had 30 plus swimmers at this meet, three of them achieving above and beyond! Leon and Jake achieved County times for next year (50m freestyle for Leon, and 50m backstroke for Jake) and Liam managed to achieve a sub-30 s time in his 50m freestyle. What great achievements! Our Club did so well that every single athlete walked out with either a personal best or a medal. Massive well done to all the swimmers. On the 16th of November, Bircotes Swimming Club are holding two events, a Sponsored Swimathon and a Triathlon to raise money for The St Giles school in Retford and for our Club. The Swimathon will take place over 3 hours and the swimmers will have to swim as far as they can in that time. We are estimating that the top swimmers will do around 5-6 miles. The triathlon is also taking place at the same time. This event entails a 600m swim (30 lengths), a 6km bike ride using the gym bikes and then a 2.4km run around the sports hall. These events are for having a bit of fun whilst doing the sports we love and raising money for great causes. Doncaster Cancer Detection Trust T
December is usually a time of reflection (in between the hectic preparations for Christmas!) and we look back on a very busy year. With your help we were able to inform DRI at the beginning of the year that we had the money for another CT scanner. The new CT unit should be operational by March 2020 and we will keep you updated. In April we launched our prostate cancer appeal for a £150,000 biopsy machine, which at the time of writing (beginning of November) had reached £40,000. We are very fortunate to have the continuing support of so many groups, organisations and individuals who fundraise and offer help in many ways. Also our lovely friendly volunteers (we have no paid staff) who do so much during the year, without whose unstinting loyalty we would not be able to function. Our annual Memory Tree event in the Frenchgate Centre continues during December until Friday, 20th December. We are downstairs outside Boots from 10am to 3pm Monday to Saturday. Please come along and see us, have a chat and buy a token in memory of your loved one. Charity Seeks Volunteer Engineers/Craftsmen

WANTED: Practically Minded People With A Flair For Simple Ingenuity Remap is a very special charity, working through a nationwide network of dedicated volunteers. These inspiring people use their ingenuity and skills to enable people with disabilities to achieve much-desired independence in some aspect of their lives, or to enjoy leisure opportunities previously closed to them. Although charities have problems raising funds, and REMAP is not alone in this, Doncaster REMAP panel is looking for volunteer engineers/craftsmen to design, manufacture and commission aids for clients.

Ten per cent of us will have a disability at some stage. It may come on with the onset of old age, it may be congenital or it may be the result of an accident. There are many products on the market designed to make life easier for people with disabilities but if these don’t provide the solution, REMAP can step in and make a gadget or a special piece of equipment, sometimes proprietary equipment, tailored to the individual person’s specific needs. Some are very simple, others are more elaborate, but each one is unique, and all are given free to the people who need them. Each year in Doncaster and Bassetlaw areas
our volunteers make approx. 50 items. REMAP needs engineers/ craftsmen with their own workshops where the devices are made. Our engineers need to be able to solve problems, design and manufacture their designs and commission them to the satisfaction of the client and where appropriate the Occupational therapist. Our engineers really enjoy making things well, whether it involves welding a joint, turning a piece of wood, putting together a toy car, upholstering a chair or helping with administration. Expenses are paid to the engineers for any travelling or for any materials purchased.

As we approach the season of Christmas surrounded as we are by the distractions of sparkly decorations, late night shopping, and the latest Christmas ‘must haves’ (last year a pre-lit tree, before that a Christmas jumper) and the pressure of endless to-do lists, relentless ‘special Christmas offers’, the reality of spiralling costs and smaller family budgets, and longer and longer present lists, it is hard to hold on to - in fact in some quarters we have lost sight of - what has become known as the real meaning of Christmas. Sadly, Christmas no longer means angel and Mary, stable and baby, shepherd and star. I am reminded of the old, favourite hymn: ‘Who is He, in yonder stall, at whose feet the shepherds fall?’ I genuinely believe that we are becoming increasingly unable to answer this question. All the preparations for, and the celebration of, the mainstream, marketing- led Christmas (which seem to start earlier and earlier every year) are now so far removed from real reason for the season that the story of Jesus has become practically invisible and perhaps to most, irrelevant. Replaced by a trashy, tinselly commerce driven nothing, a no-thing. But Christmas is not just stable, baby, and star: it is much more. As the hymn writer says: ‘’Tis the Lord! O wondrous story! ‘Tis the Lord! The King of Glory! ‘At his feet we humbly fall; crown Him, crown Him Lord of all.’

Christmas celebrates the coming of God amongst us, the beginning of the path to our Salvation and our eternal destiny in the heavenly kingdom and the nearer presence of God. And this has to be worth celebrating. But could I suggest a radically different, alternative way, with carol singing, nativity plays, Christingles, midnight Mass? All of which put the Christ back into Christmas. We cannot go on allowing ourselves to be manipulated by marketing. It is time to stop the shopping (does granny really want a two-foot high panettone?) And it is time to change our focus and priorities from getting to giving, from me to my community and from commerce to Christ Jesus. May the joy of the angels, the wonder of the shepherds, the richness of the wise men, the love of Mary and Joseph, the peace of the Christ Child be yours this Christmas. Every blessing

Hello from Mayflower
This is the story of our dog Kimmy that we rescued at the beginning of the year. I am 6 years old and lived in Romania for most of my life. My owners were very cruel to me and my life was dreadful and harsh. I was made to live outside on the concrete with no shelter or bedding in all weathers sun, rain and snow. The people I lived with would not let me indoors and would hurt me by kicking and beating me if I tried to get past them into the warm dry house. A very kind lady witnessed their cruelty to me on a regular basis and asked my owners if she could have me. Luckily they agreed and my saviour fostered me until a place became available at Mayflower Sanctuary in England. When I arrived at Mayflower I was scared of everything and everybody. Jennie the owner decided I was too stressed to be put into the Sanctuary so I stayed with her and her dogs. She said I needed to learn to trust people but this took a long time. I had never had a bed of my own and now I was allowed on Jennies bed, so I felt I was in heaven. I didn’t move far from this bed for a long time though, I think I was frightened my new friends would steal my spot. Eventually Jennie went on holiday and some other people moved in to take care of us all. They were very nice to me and I felt safe and a little more confident. When Jennie came home they asked if I could go to stay with them and their dog and cats for a little while to see how we all got on together. From that day my life began, I now have a forever home with my new mum, dad and sister called Heart she was a street dog in Cyprus (we did struggle with the language barrier at first but we now get along fine together) I also have great fun with the cats Tizzy, Cleo and Milly they like to lick my face to say hello. My mum takes us both for walks which we love, but we both hate the cold and rain so our mum makes us wear a warm jacket, we probably have
bad memories of another harsh life. We also have lots of treats from people we meet on our walks as well as treats at home, but our nice vet said we are both getting a little podgy, (I am not sure what that means ) but mum says we need to walk more and cut down on the treats for a while.. I now have a bed of my own which is very cosy (but mum and dad’s bed is even better). I have my own food bowl and toys and lots of love. I am loving my cosy new life, however it will take a long time to forget and trust completely again. I am looking forward to my first Christmas curled up on the sofa in the warm with my new mum, dad, sister and furry friends. I am hoping Santa will visit me for the first time in my life too. Happy Christmas and love from Kimmy. I hope you all enjoyed Kimmy’s story which is not unlike many of the dogs we bring in from Romania. Jennie the Sanctuary manager was there to rehabilitated her when she first arrived and without that one to one help Kimmy would not have grown into the dog she is today.
Pacha was rehomed from Mayflower as a youngster and has spent 2 wonderful years in her home. During this time she has shared her home with another cat. Unfortunately, several months ago, he was involved in a car accident and had to spend a couple of weeks in the hospital. Fortunately he recovered and returned but this wasn’t good news for Pacha as he started to attack her at every opportunity. Things got so bad that Pacha was afraid to come into the house and her owner was having to feed her outside and ‘sneak’ her indoors Pacha was becoming depressed so, although her owner loved her deeply, it was arranged for her to back into our care. She has settled well and, although still a little nervous, she is a treasure to have around. Pacha was able to go outside in her former home so a secure garden to explore away from busy roads is required for her new home.
There are lots of dogs that have nowhere to call home that need our help, the lucky ones are in our rescue centres and will hopefully be given a second chance of a family life. We shall continue to do our utmost and rescue as many dogs as possible both locally and further afield. The Sanctuary need more home visitors to check potential new homes for families that have chosen a dog, making sure that the dog and family are a good match, training will be given and petrol paid if required. All I need is a little time and patience for my true personality to come shining through. The wait will be worth it. My carer says that there’s a cuddle cat hiding in here somewhere, it just needs a little persuasion to come out. In the meantime I’ll just sit here and wait. Please don’t make me wait too long.

Dazzle this Christmas There’s nothing like glittering sequins, sparkling diamantes and shiny precious metals to give you instant glamour and brighten your spirits through the winter nights. The party season is fast approaching so it’s SEQUINS of course! “Sequin” originated from the Arabic word sikka, meaning “coin,” later becoming the Venetian word zecchino. In the late 16th century, it morphed into the French word ‘sequin’ as we know today. In 1922, archaeologists opened the tomb of Egyptian pharaoh Tutankhamun, revealing splendid garments embellished in gold metal discs. Western fashion later reflected the dazzling artefacts in King Tut’s tomb and 1920’s Flappers’ dresses were often embellished with hundreds of metal sequins. Christmas Party Dresses fall in to a number of categories: 50’s and 60’s retro style for those who love to look lady like; 70’s Disco Queen for those who want to sparkle; minimalist for those who love that understated look; and of course, not forgetting the Little Black Dress. The Little Black Dress is hard to resist, but is it really flattering? For decades the LBD has been

the failsafe garment of choice for women everywhere. It’s simple, slimming, chic and above all a ‘safe bet’ - but the colour black does not flatter most people. The majority of British women will not look young and healthy with black worn close to their faces. In fact, it can be dramatically ageing. Many women have relied on their trusty LBD for years, but before you buy the new black dress, here’s a useful tip to tell if black really suits you: Hold black up against your face, stand in front of the mirror and look for dark lines under the chin, shadows around the eyes or lines on the face that are highlighted. If there are no dark areas or shadows, you can probably wear black close to your face and look great. Another sign that black suits you is if you have dark “crypts” or “spokes” in the iris of your eyes. Those who fit into that category will be able to wear their LBD to their hearts’ content, but the rest of you take care!

Misson Community Association

St John The Baptist Church,
Misson was the venue for the fabulous Abbeydale Singers during the evening of 19th October, which was a resounding success with the church full of an appreciative audience. The singers are one of Yorkshire’s foremost and well-respected mixed voice chamber choirs - musical treats included some classical, modern and choral pieces with amongst others, a memorable rendition of the Battle of Jericho. As well as appearing in the UK, they are in great demand in other countries too. The choir also has a strong commitment to the development of young musicians in the region, and through these concerts has provided a platform to young soloists, many of whom have gone onto successful musical careers. With refreshments in the interval, it made for a delightful musical evening in our lovely church, and proceeds being shared between the church and Misson Community Association. Many thanks to David Hobson for securing the choir, and everyone else who helped in various ways to make the concert a great success. Also in October, Janette Walker who is an Environmental Education and Awareness officer from Bassetlaw District Council, came along to explain to residents how and what to recycle properly, not just paper, yogurt pots, cans and various plastics, but where to take clothing and shoes etc. One example is Salvation Army clothing banks in various car parks around the county and of course their charity shops - some waste and recycle centres also have clothing banks. Nottinghamshire County Council do not send anything to landfill sites…everything is recycled in one way or another. Bawtry Town Council - DECEMBER 2019 New Hall
Recreational Matters
The Council are responsible for running The New Hall in Bawtry. All hire forms are available on the Council’s website. The bookings clerk, Claire Mills can be contacted on 07398 279574 or by email at newhallbookings@gmail.com A big thank you is given to the New Hall Management Committee who ran the hall prior to May this year. They have kindly agreed to fund significant costs in restoring the flooring areas at the hall. This will mean a short closure for a week from around the 29th December to enable the work to be undertaken.
Earlier this year new government legislation came into force banning the use of drones within 5km of UK airport runways, the enlarged no fly zone is designed to better protect airports from those misusing drones. The government has said “the law is clear that flying a drone near an airport is now a serious criminal act”. In light of the above, to ensure users of our facilities don’t inadvertently fall foul of the law, the Council has agreed to install signs at Wharf Street play area and the Memorial Sports Ground noting these areas are in the “No-Drone Zone”
Market Hill
Events
The fruit & vegetable stall is now up and running! Les & Helen Cairns, the new tenants, have run a stall on Doncaster Market for many years and are now operating on Market Hill from 8am- Late Tuesday – Saturday. We encourage residents to support the stall to ensure it will be a success for many years to come. The Councils Pay & Display contract with Excel Parking comes to an end in May 2021 and members are therefore considering how to deliver this service in the future. An Invitation to Tender was approved at the November meeting and will be advertised on the Government Contract Finder website. Details are also available from the Clerk to the Council. Interested parties should submit a tender by the closing date of 17th January 2020. Members have additionally agreed that, from May 2021, charges for Sundays & Bank Holidays will be removed and there will be an initial ½hr free parking for users. A review of these changes will then be made after 6 months of operation with the Council consulting with the public on their preferred options at that time.
The Senior Residents Lunch is to be held at Bawtry Hall on the 3rd December. 195 people applied for a ticket with 157 places being available. The criteria agreed by members has been applied to allocate places. Those who have been successful will be contacted on or around Friday 22nd November. Please note if you have not been contacted, unfortunately we have not been able to allocate you a place this year.
Meetings
The next Council Meeting is on Tuesday 10th December at 7.00pm at the New Hall. Residents & Businesses are welcome to attend BTC meetings. There is a 15-minute public discussion period for specific questions to be put to Council during the meeting. Please come along & get involved.
War Memorial Relocation of the War Memorial is now planned in the near future. Despite some delay members welcome the completion of this project and look forward to the memorial being more accessible to residents and visitors in the very near future.

Bawtry Residents Group On behalf of the Bawtry Residents Group, I would like to congratulate Mr Iain Hill in raising over £1000 for Bluebell Wood charity. Iain was out in all
weathers selling the tickets to support this worthwhile charity. I had the pleasure of assisting Iain with drawing the winning tickets, there were a variety of prizes which I now believe have been delivered by Iain.
It is good to see a fresh fruit and vegetable stall in Bawtry again located on Market Hill. It’s over 4 years since the last stall closed down and something that the local residents have been asking for via Bawtry Town Council, the Bawtry Residents Group and the Bawtry Retail Association. Bawtry Town Council have been working on this project for over a year and it finally came to fruition on Tuesday the 5th November when Les and Helen Cairns opened the stall for business. I have heard many local residents saying how good it is to see its return and that the standard of the

fruit and vegetables on the stall is excellent. Hopefully in the future we can look forward to a full market happening in Bawtry as it has been missed for many years. As we all can see from news posted on the Neighbourhood Watch facebook page, crime and other activities are still occurring in Bawtry. The most worrying crime occurred on wharf Street where a person exposed himself to a local resident’s daughter on two occasions. If anyone has information relating to this matter can they contact the NHW coordinator or the Police asap. Once again the subject of the 40 MPH speed limit on Doncaster Road has raised its head again. Hopefully, some of you will be aware that the BRG have been canvasing DMBC over the past 3 years to re-designate this stretch of the road to 30 MPH. Representatives from the DMBC highways department have been to BRG meetings to discuss this and other issues such as the turning into Sainsburys. A petition carried out by the BRG was presented to DMBC late last year but unfortunately they were not interested in what the residents of Bawtry wanted regards speed limits on their roads. However, DMBC did undertake a traffic monitoring survey the results of which they stated did not warrant the reduction of speed to 30mph and therefore
they would not be reducing the speed limit. Our efforts to get this change implemented are continuing and if anyone is interested in getting actively involved with our campaign please contact me. The next meeting of the BRG will be on the 28th of November where this issue will be discussed and it is hoped to appoint a residents champion to take this issue forward with DMBC. I am pleased to be able to report that the Trick and Treat Halloween event at the Memorial Sports Ground on Saturday the 2nd of November coordinated by the Bawtry Town Council Events Group with support from the Mayflower PTA and the Trustees of BARS was a great success. The BRG would like to thank Angela Lawton (chair of the PTA) and her husband Dean for dressing the hall prior to the children’s arrival. The £2 entrance fee covered both the fee for the DJ and the hotdogs supplied by Jaysters catering of Bawtry, the children attending the event absolutely loved it as it would appear so did the parents. It is hoped to make this an annual event for the children of Bawtry and tentative plans have already been drawn up for the 31st October 2020. The applications for the Bawtry Town Council Christmas dinner to held at Bawtry Hall has now closed and those residents who have been successful will be notified in the near future.

A big thank you to the BRA for organising the wine donations for the event, donated from local retailers. A shorter update this month due to the magazine being a bumper edition for Christmas. We have provided brief updates on the work we have been involved in to make Bawtry and Austerfield even better but do get in touch for more information. New Bins – it was great to see the new bins in place around the town after requesting them. Bins were put in to replace recently damaged ones on Station Road and in the lay-by on Tickhill Road; replace the old bin on the corner of Oak Tree and a new bin on Argosy. Rachael met with a resident to discuss the best place for the new bin which had been requested by residents to reduce the amount of littering and dog fouling taking place in the area. We have been told it has made a difference up to now so long may it continue. Dropped kerbs – these are now in on Martin Lane. Please don’t struggle crossing the road and get in touch if a dropped kerb would help you getting around Visit to Mayflower school – it was a joy to go
into Mayflower school to talk in assembly about litter and how the pupils can help to keep the town tidy. The pupils were keen to get involved and litter champions are being recruited as well as all children designing posters to go onto our bins to encourage everyone to use the bins
Trees around Kingswood estate - In October
as part of Mayor Ros Jones’s visit to the ward we took her around the town and village to look at some ongoing problems. One area was the trees that are at the back of Ivatt Close that are affecting neighbouring gardens. Unfortunately, these trees don’t belong to anyone so after weeks of exchanges of emails with senior managers at DMBC Rachael’s request for common sense to prevail it did and the trees were cut back.
Kingswood Close- Work has continued to make
the estate better for residents. It would be good to hear from residents about these improvements

40mph on Doncaster Road – we have mentioned over the last 4 years our liaising with DMBC Highways officers to reduce the 40mph limit on Doncaster Road. Rachael has arranged a meeting for a resident to meet with Highways officers after he contacted her, and Rachael has involved the Cabinet Member for Highways in these demands. Our efforts to get the speed limit reduced continues. Heritage group – talking about Bawtry’s past – the third session will take place on Tuesday December 10th from 230 – 4pm. Everyone who has a story to tell is very welcome to attend. Refreshments provided. Post office – Despite the involvement of
Caroline Flint working with Bawtry Town Council and our efforts to include Business Doncaster haven’t had any impact on the Post Office who are sticking to their plans that a post office has to be located in an existing shop and currently no retailers are able to take on this role – like many things we are trying to change, our work will continue.
Litter pick – this had to be re-organised in
November due to the weather and the World Cup but was postponed to 16th November so we can get the town looking good for Illuminate and Bawtry Christmas. We will be having the December one on 7th December – weather permitting.

Misson and Springs W.I. And so another year draws to a close and here in Misson we are preparing to celebrate Christmas - early, as usual, to clear the decks before family and work commitments prevent our meeting as a group to paint the town red.
the buzz of chatter, the clinking of glasses and the clattering of cups and saucers ensured a lively atmosphere and a most convivial evening. We don’t need special occasions to enjoy ourselves and we would like to welcome you to join us at any of our regular

meetings; just turn up at the Community Centre, Vicar Lane in Misson at 7:30 p.m. or call our secretary, Lynda Redfern on 07796 975578. We meet on the last Wednesday of every month, except December. You will be assured of a warm reception and our legendary refreshments all evening.
I must confess, however, that ‘paint the town red’ will probably be a bit of an exaggeration as we tuck into our Eaton’s pie and peas, our antidote to an excess of Christmas fare. Our programme for 2020 has been drawn up, calendars printed and we will all be ready to start the new year with a talk in January from Tim Mulroy. Tim comes highly recommended with his account of The British Schindler. Our October meeting also heralded an early start to festivities as members made various Christmas crafts Suffolk puffs for those handy with a sewing needle, which are being collated to form a Christmas tree; for those of us less dexterous, we had the opportunity to make and decorate paper angels. As usual in October, Anita Love was present with her Christmas range of Flamingo Paperie cards and stationery, and as always on members’ evenings

Who Gives a Hoot? A Catch-Up from Wise Owl Warm greetings to all Humans preparing to celebrate at this time of year! I sense excitement in the air, see twinkly lights and hear carols on my travels. Good to know you sing too. Another reason to be cheerful is the moritorium on fracking. Had to look that one up. Basically means a pause - not a ban. Follows the lead taken by Scotland, Wales and Ireland. So interesting days once the election is over. I was happy to see the latest Government poll in November showed a massive drop to only 11% support for this habitat and life threatening industry. That’s your habitat and health too, by the way. So the campaign continues. Leaflet drops, meetings, talks. A great team at work on this so if you have a spare hour to help do get in touch. Meetings are open, friendly and informal. Nottinghamshire Wildlife Trust are close friends to us owls. Misson Carr SSSI is my home and home to so many rare species. NWT monitoring and care lifts my heart on days when I feel overwhelmed in the face of these giant companies and their ‘vision’ of multiple wells ravaging this area. Looking back and looking forward: Are you interested in looking back to your ancestors? Did you know that you could order a DNA testing kit for under £50? One company said
that over the past 16 years, they have helped millions of people find new family members and discover their ethnic origins. This can be fun to explore but there can be serious consequences. There may be unwelcome surprises – as we see in the TV show “Who do you think you are?” Another company says “The cells in your body have 23 pairs of chromosomes. Your chromosomes are made of DNA, which can tell you a lot about you.”
Justin Welby, had a surprise. A DNA test was arranged by a newspaper – with his permission. He discovered that his father was not who he had thought. The Archbishop’s response amazed journalists and the watching world: “It is a testimony to the grace and power of Christ to liberate and redeem us, ... I know that I find who I am in Jesus Christ, not in genetics, and my identity in Him never changes.” How liberating to find our identity in God and not in ourselves, our parents or our circumstances.
Science is discovering more and more about how God’s creation works. In Psalm 139, David said: “For you created my inmost being; you knit me together in my mother’s womb. I praise you because I am fearfully and wonderfully made; …”
Then, as we look forward, we want to plan. But will we be fit enough to fulfil those plans? The government hopes that genetics could be used to develop “predictive and personalised health care” for all. To make a start the Health Secretary announced, in November, that the NHS were planning to sequence the DNA of every baby born in the UK, starting with a pilot scheme of 20,000 children.
We are all made by God and in his image yet each of us is unique. Sin can, and does, distort that image, but God has no surprises. In April 2016, the Archbishop of Canterbury,

sequencing their entire set of genes? But there are significant ethical considerations. Not all potential conditions identified can be treated. People often prefer not to know about these risks before it is necessary – so what should happen to this health information on the new-borns when they reach 18? Frances Elmslie of the British Society for Genetic Medicine comments, “We have endless discussions about testing children for conditions that don’t manifest until later life.” In any case our health and our future can never be totally predictable. Jesus told a story (in Luke 12) about a rich, successful farmer who thought differently! He built a bigger place to store all his goods and expected to relax, “eat, drink and be merry”. But God said that he would die that very night. The story ends with a warning “… a person is a fool to store up earthly wealth but not have a rich relationship with God.” In our uncertain world let us review our priorities and seek to develop a richer relationship with our creator God?

“All we have are memories” We welcomed several newcomers to Tickhill Music Society’s piano recital by the Lithuanian, Ugnius Pauliukonis - and what a treat we were all in for! Performing since being six years young, he filmed this performance as part of working towards his International Artist Diploma. A lengthy pause before he started the first piece, well-articulated Haydn, heightened expectations. Before continuing with the more romantic repertoire of Chopin, Debussy and Dvarionas, he informed us of his theme for the first half: water. As if we hadn’t seen enough of the wet stuff lately! The Haydn coda was based on water; Chopin’s Etude is known as “waterfall” (descending chords of the right hand over the river’s arpeggios of the left); Debussy’s Reflections in the Water (ending on both banks at the furthest stretches of the keyboard); the Lithuanian composer’s The First Snowflakes perhaps stretching the point a little but worthy for the sheer virtuosity required. So were we looking forward to the second half? Well, it was all Chopin - but proved to be delightfully varied. Ugnius introduced us to the dance motif, starting with a Ballade of gentle lilt - though with great dynamics to come. Ugnius explained that while Mazurkas are Polish folk dances, they are really leaves from Chopin’s past and, as he claimed, “all we have are memories”. Four Mazurkas followed with a real spring in their steps. Introducing the Etudes, Ugnius kindly explained that no.5 was

nicknamed “wrong note” so we were prepared, this time the left hand taking the melody and the right expansive arpeggios, reversing “waterfall”. He invited us to try the octaves in both hands demanded by no.10! We are not all blessed with Rachmaninov’s hands, unlike this remarkable pianist. Finally the Scherzo, “like a summary of the second half” and an apt conclusion to this exceptional recital as Ugnius gazed towards the heavens, transporting us all to a place where indeed memories are made.
