This magazine is being delivered to 4500 homes in November and a further 4500 homes in December making it the highest distribution community magazine serving this area of Doncaster.

Today Publications have been producing local community magazines since 2005 and there are 4 other targeted magazines established and serving Tickhill, Bawtry, Rossington and Harworth & Bircotes. We have received many requests over the years to bring this type of magazine to this neighbourhood– so here it is!

This magazine is very much for the community and we invite all Schools, Groups, Charities, Churches, Scouts, Guides etc. to get in touch if they would like to promote themselves in their local community. Inclusion in our community pages comes free of charge and we hope to grow the number of these community pages issue by issue.

Do get in touch if your group would like to be in the next issue which will start to be distributed early in the New Year.

The magazine also supports local businesses and tradespeople. Christmas Carols

Christmas Carol Singing at Kilham Hall on Wednesday 11 December 2013 at 6.30pm.

Could you be one of our growing number of fantastic volunteers ?

Have you a calm patient nature and are you looking for something to do that will help people?

Do you like sharing stories and reminiscences with people and are you a good listener?

Do you have a few hours to spare once or twice a month in the afternoons?

We are looking for volunteers to help at our services for people with dementia and their carers.

We need volunteers at our café at Conisbrough, (monthly on a Wednesday afternoon) Singing for the Brain session in Armthorpe (monthly on a Thursday afternoon) and support group at Forest Gate Day Hospital in Balby ( monthly on a Wednesday afternoon).

We need people to help set up meet and greet visitors, serve refreshments and just sit and chat. No special qualifications or experience are needed, just a caring nature, and a willingness to learn a little bit about dementia and its impact on people. At some of our activities, we also need you to be happy to move chairs and tables.

The annual Christmas carol singing will again take place at Kilham Hall (Kilham Lane, Branton), with songs from St Wilfrid’s School Jubilate choir and accompaniment by a local organist. Refreshments provided by the WI will be available for purchase and there will be a raffle with proceeds to a local charity. T

Rock Choir Rock Choir is the largest contemporary choir in the UK with over 16,000 members across the country and there is a thriving Rock Choir in Doncaster!

The choir is doing brilliantly and since starting in September 2011 with just a handful of members we have now approximately 60 members in total. But there must be more people who love

music and who would really benefit from being part of Rock Choir. It is open to anyone of any age and ability who just loves music and singing. Members include teachers, solicitors, doctors and nurses through to students so it’s a brilliant way of bringing the community together through song.

We meet once a week and learn songs ranging from Abba to Adele and we have so much fun. We don’t take ourselves too seriously and everyone just enjoys coming along and having a good old sing to blow the cobwebs away!

We are currently running taster sessions every Monday at Hall Cross Lower School from 8pm – 9.30pm during term time for anyone interested in joining us.

community Here at the Sanctuary we are becoming very concerned about the number of dogs being affected by the seasonal disease that is prevalent in most of our woods and forests at the moment. We cancelled our own sponsored dog walk in Bawtry forest which was a big disappointment but obviously necessary as we did not want to be responsible for putting dogs in danger.

Hopefully as the winter continues this problem will disappear and we will once again able to enjoy walking in the countryside with our beloved dogs.

We were recently invited to the stables in Misterton to host a dog show which was very entertaining. It was a beautiful day and our hosts enjoyed showing everyone their dogs agility skills. We had a brilliant day and a big thank you to the stables and everyone that came along to support us.

We are joining a Sponsored Santa Dash on the 8th December at Sandal Park in Doncaster.

You can run, walk, jog whatever takes your fancy . It is £8 per person and they have family tickets available. You are even given a Santa outfit. This will be a wonderful fun morning and a good way to start the giving process of Christmas.

The sight of hundreds of Santa’s doing their own thing around the park will be amazing. So why not come along and join us. Give us a call and we will give you the info you need.

We will also be doing our usual street collection in Doncaster the week before Christmas so please come along and say hello.

Rather than leaving everything to each other, you and your spouse (or partner) leave your respective share of your home to the children in Trust but say that they cannot have it whilst the surviving spouse/ partner is still alive. This half would then NOT be included in any future means test calculations. The surviving spouse is free to sell their share of the home, raise cash or move house. Your children are powerless to intervene but simply have to wait for their inheritance, as they would have done under your old ‘Mirror Will’.

Do you Qualify? Property Trust Wills must be written whilst you are both still alive and in good mental health. Unfortunately, these are unsuitable if you are single or a surviving spouse who now owns the property outright. It is therefore important for couples to act now.

These are known as ‘Mirror Wills’. Sounds reassuring enough doesn’t it! But your children could in fact end up with very little or even nothing at all. The main reason for this is your surviving spouse requiring residential care when you are no longer here to look after them.

Although the possibility of care may seem a long way off, there are steps your should take now to protect your home.

Care Costs - If your surviving spouse has to go into care, they will have to use all their assets to pay for their care until they get down to their last £14,250. It is therefore not a good idea to leave your half share of the home in your Will to your surviving partner. The answer is to make new Property Trust Wills. You may be unaware that legislation is already in place for you to take advantage of these types of Wills.

In the recent case of Superstrike -v-Rodrigues the court of Appeal gave a decision that could have wide reaching consequences for Landlords and Tenants.

Tenancy Deposits - don’t get caught out!

The case concerned a tenant’s deposit taken before the Tenancy Deposit Regulations came into force in April 2007 but where the fixed term ended after that date and the tenant remained. The court held that the periodic tenancy arising in these circumstances was a new tenancy so the Landlord should have protected the deposit and served the prescribed information. As a result the Landlord’s claim for possession failed.

We hope that the decision will be appealed to the Supreme Court to clear up the uncertainty about whether the case also affects deposits taken after April 2007.

NOTE:

This cake can be made two weeks in advance and stored in an airtight plastic container.. You can slowly feed the cake with the syrup over the two weeks before Christmas in the same way as a traditional cake. Use other fruits such as dates, apricots and figs with a handful of nuts for crunch and texture.

Decorate your cake with dried or crystallised fruit, chocolate curls or any other decoration of your choice.

ingredients

(SERVES 4) • 150g mixed dried fruits • 1 orange, zest and juice • 1 tsp cinnamon • 1 tsp nutmeg • 1 tsp ginger • 225g self-raising flour • 400g dark muscovado sugar • 150g cocoa powder • 220g salted butter • 4 free-range eggs • 300ml warm water • 300ml evaporated milk or double cream

For the drizzle • 100g dark muscovado sugar • 125ml water • 75g dark 72% chocolate, such as Tobago • 2 Tablespoons of whiskey - or whichever spirit you like best 14 14

11. Pre-heat the oven to 175°C, fan 165°C, hot Aga oven, gas mark 4.

2 2. In a bowl mix together the fruits, orange zest and juice, alcohol and spices, and allow to soak for one hour.

33. In another larger bowl mix together the flour, sugar, cocoa powder and salt. Add the butter and rub together until the mixture resembles breadcrumbs.

4. Whisk the eggs, then add the 4 water and evaporated milk and mix well. Pour onto the dry mixture and whisk until smooth.

Add the soaked fruits and spices and stir through thoroughly.

saucepan mix the sugar and water, then heat until the sugar has fully dissolved and the liquid has just come to the simmer.

Pour onto the chocolate whisking well, then add the whiskey.

8 8. While the cake is still warm spoon the syrup over it slowly so the cake absorbs it. It’s best to do this on the cake stand or plate you will be presenting the cake on as the syrup will drizzle down the sides of the cake.

9 9. Serve the cake warm or cold with brandy cream or ice cream.

5 5. Pour into your parchment paper lined high sided 8” round cake tin and bake for 1 and a half hours.

6 6. Once the cake has come out of the oven allow to sit for a few minutes and then remove from the tin.

7. In the meantime, 7 you can make the drizzle.

A host of hidden eBay secrets

WIS MARTIN LE The ubiquitous giant online auction site eBay may seem a relatively simple beast. Yet beneath the shiny shop front there are a host of hidden secrets enabling you to pay less.

It all stems from the fact eBay’s a mammoth marketplace with millions of goods and hordes of buyers competing for the same items. It’s all too easy to get sucked into bidding wars, with your finger quivering on the mouse, and then just overpaying at the last minute.

Yet a host of hidden tools and websites allow you to hone in on hidden uber-deals overlooked by rival bidders.

Here are my top eBay buyer’s tricks…

EXPLOIT SPELLING MISTAKES Typos and eeroars on eBay are incredibubbly common. Of course, that meanz fewer people searching for things, so the prices you get are rocc bottom. A host of mistake spotters, such as www.fatfingers.co.uk, www. goofbid.com and www.bargainchecker. com trawl eBay for all possible spelling mishtake combinations which have lower prices. While we’re on it, if you’re selling remember to use spell check.

FIND COLLECTION ONLY BARGAINS NEAR YOU From designer sofas to skis and scooters, sellers often specify items are ‘collection only’. This

eBay means fewer competing bidders and serious local bargains.

You can’t yet search for this on eBay, but if you go to my eBay Local Deals Mapper tool www. moneysavingexpert.com/localebay it finds these bargains for you and maps how close they are. There’s also an Android and iPhone app version.

Results can be powerful, such as this from my site user Jen_Jen1985: “Had been looking for a double buggy, but most ended up selling for around £40.

I found one via the Local Deals tool and ended up winning it for £1.24!”

BAG NO-BID 99P ITEMS Often sellers start auctions at 99p or less, hoping a tug of war will break out between buyers. Many items go unspotted and stay at these superlow prices. It’s possible to scour eBay just for these with 99p spotter www.lastminute-auction.com.

Double-check delivery charges, as some sellers hope to recoup costs by charging a little extra. Though eBay has now set maximum delivery charges for many categories.

DO YOU NEED IT? Before I go to much further with this, just a quick word of warning about not getting carried away with bargains.

It’s worth following my money mantra before you spend cash. If you’re skint, first ask yourself “Do I need it?, Can I afford it? Have I checked whether it’s available cheaper elsewhere?!” If the answer to any of those is no, don’t buy it.

BUY STOLEN GOODS ON THE CHEAP Well, nearly, but great headline, you must admit. This one isn’t actually eBay, but is worth checking - it’s legal via police auction site www. bumblebeeauctions.co.uk. Forces in England and Wales use this eBay-style site to sell lost property or goods seized from criminals when they can’t find the rightful owner. It’s cracking for bicycles,

among other things—for example a high-spec specialized bike went for £50 (similar ones were £200 on eBay). Most larger items needs to be collected in person from local nicks. Some smaller items can be delivered, though check postage prices before buying.

FIND AUCTIONS CLOSING IN THE DEAD OF NIGHT Listings that finish at anti-social times often get fewer bids (a warning for sellers there too). Pick a time slot and a www.baycrazy. com’s Night Time Bargain Searcher cruises for these vampiric bargains.

If you don’t fancy burning the midnight oil, combine this trick with auto-bidding tools below, which can bid on your behalf while you’re deep in the land of nod.

DON’T ASSUME IT’S CHEAPEST BECAUSE IT’S ON EBAY Never assume it’s a bargain until you’ve checked prices elsewhere first. Use shopbots (shopping robots), that whizz to scores of internet retailers to find the cheapest price. My MegaShopBot.com tool auto-searches the best of these for each category.

Garden View

Winter Sun It was back in August this year when I was walking around Parc de La Tamarita, a beautiful green public space in Barcelona, when I stopped to rest from the heat and to look at a selection of ornately arranged planting beds. It occurred to me that although intensely beautiful, lush, calm and extremely relaxing, this garden had a distinct lack of something we try and cram our gardens full of back at home - flowers. In fact, in this garden there wasn’t a single one. It was a wonderful view that made me think to myself ‘must a garden have flowers in order to be beautiful?’

The dead heading, staking, pruning, feeding and general titivating we have to do to keep our blooms in peak perfection is time consuming and expensive, but to some I know, a garden without flowers is like a bride and groom without a wedding cake.

At this time of year it can be tricky to find a garden with flowers, and as we progress into winter we will find the quest increasingly difficult, which is why we rely on evergreens and the skeletons of structural shrubs within our gardens to provide colour.

Providing structure and form in key positions with elements such as clipped spheres, hedges and cones can look wonderful, and for those to whom these plants are a little too contrived, structure is provided by late flowering grasses such as Stipa gigantea and the wonderful upright group of Miscanthus ... both of course look wonderful when in flower too! T
