“The best thing about memories is making them” At the time of writing last month I was about to fly to the Greek island of Zante, for a holiday with not just my immediate family but also 10 other family members. A great time was had by all, my children spent lots of quality time with their cousins, with lots of beach, pool and splash park fun, sea swimming, turtle spotting, ice cream eating! We all made full use of the hotel’s entertainment programme with several T-shirts won in poolside quizzes and certificates for participation in all sorts of activities! My youngest Hannah, came so very close to achieving a Guinness World Record and Charlotte was invited to join the entertainment team on the stage and sing one evening. A great family holiday with many memories created. The school term is well under way and I am very pleased to report that so far 6th form and secondary are being enjoyed by my eldest and youngest children respectively – long may that last! Last month I forgot to note that the September issue was in fact the 100th issue of Rossington Today! Rossington Today was the 2nd magazine I launched back in 2006. Having failed to celebrate this landmark issue, I have now turned my attention to how to celebrate 10 years of Today Publications early next year. Ideas appreciated! The November issues will be delivered to you late October. If you would like to have something included in this, please make sure details are with me by Friday 10th October.

Enjoy October and I will be back in a months’ time with your November magazine!

Best wishes, Paula x

Here at the Sanctuary we have been busy all summer. We have been hand rearing some beautiful kittens that had been abandoned, this takes such time and patience but to see them get a little stronger each day is so rewarding. They are all thriving thanks to a lovely foster carer and hope they will be ready for their new homes in a few weeks. Whilst out walking someone’s dog found a litter of kittens in a sack next to a river (maybe someone intended drowning them and then their conscience got the better of them, who knows) The dogs owner couldn’t believe her eye’s when the sack was moving and was totally shocked at finding kittens waiting to die in a sack. Well, it’s a happy ending they are all fit and well and waiting for their new homes. We have lots of very special cats young and old. We have young twin marmalade tabbies that are an absolute dream, also lots of a little older cats that just need a knee to curl up on. An older cat makes a wonderful companion and would prefer maybe a quieter life with an elderly person which would be ideal. All our cats are neutered, vaccinated, flea’d and wormed before they go to their new home. If you would like any further information on our re-homing process please let us know. Our Sanctuary is full to overflowing and we have a waiting list of dogs that need to come to us. We have some really lovely dogs in at the moment, large, medium, small, pedigree and cross breeds all waiting for that special person to come along and take them home. There is a beautiful Labrador whose owner passed away and the family were not in a position to take care of him, he’s settled in well but it would be lovely to find him another perfect home to end his days.

Finding a forever home Our kennel staff and volunteers are the best people you could wish for to take care of our dogs and cats. They are a very special bunch of people that make our Sanctuary what it is. They take care of our dogs and cats individual needs and nothing is too much trouble for them. This is a stop gap for most of our residents but it is such a shame when a dog is still with us month after month. So please if you are considering giving a cat or dog a home come along and see us. We will be happy to chat about what dog or cat would be suitable and fit in with your lifestyle. We have some wonderful dog listener volunteers that have a meeting on a Saturday morning before you take one of our dogs home. They will give you some really good sound advise, particularly if you are a first time pet owner. Don’t forget we have a lovely charity shop on Retford Road in Manton with lovely gifts so please if you are in the area and looking for that special something you never know it could be waiting for you there. We will be in Doncaster doing a street collection on the 6th December which seems a long way away but I know it will be here before you know it. If anyone has any time to spend that day and is happy to smile and hold a collecting tin please call me, the more the merrier. If you would like any further information about our Sanctuary please call us and leave a message we will always call you back. 01302 711330 .

Lucky Female APRIL 2014 8 Year No No No

Hello I’m Lucky, And I came to Mayflower as my owner could no longer look after me. I am a loving girl and even though I am a bit older I still absolutely love to play fetch and have lots of life in me yet! I am good in the car and my recall off the lead is good. I would love more than anything to find a new home quickly as I’m missing a sofa to curl up on so please don’t hesitate to ask one of my carers and you can meet me properly!

Hello I’m Bodie, I came to Mayflower from the local dog pound. When I first arrived at Mayflower the bones in my front legs were not growing properly and were bowed outwards....hence the name Bodie! They have now corrected themselves through good nutrition and gentle exercise. I am a very playful, loving, giddy Young lad that needs all the usual puppy training, for example toilet training, socialising and basic commands. I need a home that has plenty of time to spend with me as I’m always on the go and I love to play, with the right loving home I will grow into a beautiful young dog. If you would like to know anymore about me please don’t hesitate to talk to one of my carers.

Tickhill & District Lions Club We have been busy as usual over the last few weeks with amongst other things the excellent Lions Fun and Sports Day for the Disabled being held at Sandal Park, Doncaster which was as usual well supported and attended with 26 Lions Clubs facilitating the days activities. More recently we were in place with a BBQ at the Tickhill Velo another tremendous local event and your local Lions provided a £500 donation for presentation to the Yorkshire Air Ambulance a most worthy cause that has assisted many people and requires massive funding to continue it's work. We continue to put the monies raised from you and your generous neighbours to good use locally too but at times we must keep detail discreet for the privacy of those we help but be assured our welfare committee works tirelessly to ensure funds are spent appropriately. It seems autumn is upon us and for your local Lions that can only mean one thing, Bonfire Night won't be too far away! This year we are pleased to announce that once again the event will take place in the grounds of the Tickhill Cricket Club and it is to be staged on Saturday 8th November so book us into your diary for what I'm sure will be a spectacular family orientated evening. More details will follow in the next issue but I'm getting excited already..... Can I leave you this month with a gentle friendly reminder. My elderly Mum who lives alone reminded me that during the summer she spends time outside chatting to her neighbours in the garden but soon however the nights will draw in and the weather become colder (and wetter) and she will see people less and less as she stays in where it's warm. Please give a thought for those less mobile and more elderly residents of your lovely village. We all lead such busy lives but it only takes a minute to pick up the phone or drop in on someone you haven't heard from for a while. The Lions motto is 'We Serve' and we endeavour to do so where we can but you can help too by being that good neighbour.

Expressions that make us smile “That’s about as useful as a chocolate teapot!” is a term we might say when something is completely impractical or helpful; such as when I’ve used some 99p tools I have bought trying to save money. Recently a tv reporter questioned the impossibility of a teapot made out of chocolate and set about seeing if such an item would be possible. The answer was yes – you can make a usable teapot out of chocolate, as long as you use very thick chocolate. They also found the tea tasted delicious and instead of washing up, you get to eat the crockery. I was hoping that the reporter would next check the validity of a similar saying; “as useful as a cat flap on a submarine”, but he didn’t. These expressions make us smile, unless they’re directed at an individual, especially us, in which case they cause pain and isolation. We can be very quick to say things that we know will hurt the person we’re speaking with,

So the next time someone likens you to a chocolate teapot; remember, you have probably said hurtful things to people and also a chocolate teapot might not be such a bad thing after all.

Initial Public Meeting

Reason for Group/ Purpose

Residents have an important, and powerful, role to play in shaping and improving their own areas. By working together, Bawtry residents can engender a greater sense of community and have a stronger voice in influencing any change that they want to see in the town. The purpose of BRG would be to work alongside the Town Council, and actively engage with local residents. Also, when considered appropriate, to lobby and campaign about issues of mutual interest. The interaction could be with the Town Council, Doncaster Borough Council, local MP’s, Retailers Association, or any other appropriate organisation, or individual, when it is thought that issues of concern are not being dealt with in a satisfactory manner. Bawtry is currently felt to have many issues that are of concern to the local community. Such issues include traffic, parking, general highway condition, bus services, the vitality and changing nature of the town i.e. the number of empty retail units, and the balance

Dear Friends, This year marks the 100th year anniversary of the start of the First World War. My heart goes out to those who sacrificed their lives to make us safe. As we continue to honour and remember their heroisms, I wonder if the generations that have come after them have learnt their lessons. As at the time of writing this piece, I was trying to count the wars that are currently being fought in parts of the world – Libya, Syria, Iraq, Palestine, South Sudan, Central African Republic, Ukraine, and so on. I also find it difficult to recount the violence that is spotted all over the five or six continents in this world. As a Christian, one of the things that have become the basis of my reflections is the assurance that the Lord Jesus gives us peace. After Jesus had risen from the dead, he appeared to his disciples in the locked upper room, and breathed his peace unto them. After engaging with them for a while, he said, “Peace be with you! As the Father has sent me, I am sending you.” And with that he breathed on them and said, “Receive the Holy Spirit. If you forgive anyone’s sins, their sins are forgiven...” (John 20: 21-23) (New International Version (NIV)). I imagine that if each of us were willing to pursue peace and forgiveness these wars and violent skirmishes that are now frequent in almost every continent would not be in place. I want to draw your attention to the fact that the Apostle Paul, writing to the church in Colossae, reminded them to ‘let the peace of Christ rule in your hearts, since as members of one body you were called to peace’ (Colossians 3: 15) (NIV).

May I suggest that we become agents of peace by expressing our non-violent feelings, opinions, and actions that can go a long way to help the victims of war. One of the ways is to continue to remind the politicians of the need to act in ways of bringing peace to the world. I wonder if you have also considered giving to the charities that are working around the clock in dangerous situations to help overcome the human sufferings in these war-torn areas. What about writing a note to one of the perpetrators if you are in a position of influence. As you celebrate harvest and remember the heroes of wars this autumn, my prayer is that ‘the peace of God, which transcends all understanding, will guard your hearts and your minds in Christ Jesus.’ (Philippians 4:7) (NIV). I wonder if I can conclude with a quote from Jesus of Nazareth, which says, “Blessed are the peacemakers, for they will be called children of God”.(Matthew 5:9) (NIV) God bless you. Frank [Methodist Minister (Adwick, Auckley, Bawtry, Harworth, Rossington, Sprotbrough, Sprotbrough Road and Tickhill)] T: 01302 857952 E: frank.okai-sam@methodist.org.uk T

Being called to peace is a responsibility. I don’t suppose that each of us need to be members of unions or the United Nation’s committees or become politicians in order to be agents of peace. I remember having a conversation with a friend who was blaming one faction for starting a war and justifying the other faction’s response. My reaction was, ‘wait till the missile falls in your bedroom or hall before you consider who to blame’. Let’s remind ourselves that there are no winners in a war, however justifiable we may think it is. 20

TROUBLESOME TENDONS

There are many tendons in the body that are prone to becoming problematic – the Achilles in the ankle, the rotator cuff in the shoulder, the patella in the knee and the extensor tendon in the elbow to name but a few. Historically, it was thought that these problems were caused by inflammation and were thus labelled as tendon – itis (itis meaning inflammation) with subsequent treatment aimed at reducing inflammation with anti-inflammatory medication and steroid injections. Treatment outcomes were somewhat inconsistent and rarely satisfactory. Recent medical advances mean we now know that the predominant factor in these problems tends to be degeneration of the tendon tissue (tendonosis) with inflammation only occasionally having a minor part to play. Commonly, these problems are now referred to as tendonopathies – a more general term meaning tendon dysfunction. Tendon degeneration occurs when the tendon is under excessive stress and strain which may be as a result of performing a new activity, increasing the frequency of a pre-existing activity or performing an activity during which the body is moving with altered biomechanics (e.g. the Achilles is under excessive strain in the foot with a fallen arch, the patella tendon is under altered load in someone walking or running with a stiff hip). As a result, the tendon becomes painful, thickened, tight, tender and weak. As Physiotherapists, we are in an ideal position to treat tendonopathies successfully. Movement patterns and biomechanics can be assessed and corrected to minimise ongoing strain on the tissue. Manual therapy techniques can reduce the thickening and tightness in the tendon whilst very specific training techniques help to strengthen the tendon tissue. Tendon problems can be stubborn problems but will get better with skilled and thoughtful treatment.

On the water in Croatia & Montenegro Lee Jackson Report from

Croatia is a very popular choice for sailing holidays, its crystal clear seas, idyllic islands and fashionable ports make it an attractive proposition for a summer break on the water. With this in mind our first visit to the country since the breakup of the former Yugoslavia was well and truly centred around the water and water related activities. Our base for the week was Cavtat (pronounced “Savtat”), just 10 minutes’ drive from Dubrovnik airport and a popular overnight stop for many yachts and cruisers. The small resort has two bays and our hotel offered stunning views of the harbour and town, and easy access to the rock based beach areas. Our hotel, named exactly as the country “The Croatia” had been described in trip advisor reports as more deserving of four star status than five, functional in design and lacking in pool space for such a large residence. With these views in mind we were generally pleased with our accommodation, clean and spacious rooms, attentive service, great beach access and good food choice in the restaurants. Its functional design born from its former Yugoslavian heritage is not necessarily unpleasant and as a child of the seventies reminded me of how we thought all buildings would look by the 21st century. Also on the agenda for the stay was to gain some insight into the Croatian identity. Having spent recent summers in Spain, Italy and Greece where the characteristics of our hosts were much understood, we had no real experience of the Croatian character and were keen to gain some insight into life in the region given Croatia’s relatively short time of independence. 28

of Bliss Travel

The summer temperatures in Cavtat literally force an association with the water and in the first few days we use kayaks to explore the coast and the nearby islands of Supetar and Bobara. Whilst Bobara looks inviting its jagged rocks limit the visit to viewing from the kayak, whereas a more hospitable Supetar allows tender of the kayaks and a simple but delicious lunch of local chargrilled Sardines and Mackerel with salad and grilled vegetables. As we work hard to make our way back to the Cavtat harbour in the afternoon sun we watch the stream of yachts and cruisers heading for the Marina for the evening and are suitably inspired to make arrangements for our own sailing experience later in the week. That evening we gain our first insight into the Croatian mood as we talk to our waiter “Tony” about how life has changed under the Croatian Flag. Surprisingly, Tony tells us that life in the new country is far more challenging than under the Yugoslavian regime where he personally enjoyed a good income and the freedom to travel to the west. While he acknowledged that the Croatian independence and freedom was both important and hard fought he also made clear the struggles of a making a living as part of the new democracy. Our day under the power of sail required a taxi to Dubrovnik from where the charter had been arranged. We elected to take the road transfer having visited Dubrovnik earlier in the stay through one of the many

local boat services which offer a more relaxed and scenic journey but take an hour versus thirty minutes. Dubrovnik is a perfectly preserved medieval city with completely preserved stone ramparts surrounding the Venetian architecture of its interior. We had been forewarned of the level of visitor numbers in high season and in the extreme heat the stroll around the walls and streets was far from relaxing! That said it should be noted that the historic centre really is a magnificent spectacle and we’ll worth closer attention outside of peak season. For our sailing day we join the boat and skipper “Niko” at the Sailing Dubrovnik base in Lapad Bay. As we set sail from the Marina we head past the P&O Ventura cruise ship which would be contributing much to that days visitor numbers in the city. We move beyond the confines of the city and into the bay first under motor power, and then as some breeze emerges under the power of sail. After discussion with Niko we agree to a day’s itinerary to include swimming and snorkelling stops and a visit to the Elafiti Islands for lunch. Where necessary we lend a hand in hoisting and adjusting the sails to steer our course through the winds and manage to do in ten seconds what a sailing crew would do in one!

EVERTON VILLAGE PLAYERS

“IT’S ON - IT’S OFF!” Local Sheffield playwright Ray Lawrence brings his fabulous comedy “It’s On - It’s Off” to the area this October. This brilliant comedy will be performed by Everton Village Players and the Director, Barry Nicholls, is particularly proud, because Ray was one of his Creative Writing students on his Abbeydale Writers course. When he read the script, Barry knew he would love to direct it, and Everton Village Players said “It’s On!” A former Chartered Secretary in the Engineering Industry, Ray Lawrence has written many plays which have been performed across the UK, North America and Australia and so it’s a real treat to see one of his plays so close to home. 38

What a load of rhubarb! Cast your mind back to the fabulous sunny months of April, May and June, when the rhubarb plants were producing delicious stems of juicy fruit, perfectly ripe for crumble. Each of the stems (so technically not a fruit at all) which blushed with the colour of pink champagne or deep raspberry sorbet depending on the variety, could easily be torn from the plant, topped and tailed and then either used immediately or blanched and frozen for later. Rhubarb freezes very well, and lasts for around a year, in fact I made a crumble in April this year using last years frozen harvest. Chopped into 1cm pieces, it can be placed directly into freezer bags, but to retain its colour should be blanched for around 1 minute in boiling water. Allow to cool and dry before freezing. To revive, boil in a little fresh orange juice, a teaspoon of cinnamon powder and sugar to taste before allowing to cool. It’s a versatile crop and makes great jam, compote and crumble, and tastes delicious when made as above and served with crème fraîche. Rhubarb originates from the colder parts of China and its popularity is fairly recent in historical terms, becoming more widely eaten as sugar became less expensive. The 40

BAWTRY TODAY

leaves are toxic and so too are the stems later on in the year, because the toxic acids move down the stems from the leaves and into the crown as the winter temperatures cool. October is the perfect time to plant rhubarb if you haven’t got any at the moment and would like a patch of your own. It’s quite unfussy and will grow in sun or part shade as long as the soil is moisture retentive. Add well-rotted manure to the planting hole and mulch the plant with a ‘doughnut’ shape of manure about 50cm deep in spring. Give the plant a feed with ‘blood, fish and bone’ in March and watch it grow! It’s an easy perennial plant, which produces giant leaves and is pretty resistant to pests, although hungry mammals might feast on the crowns in early spring when food is scarce. Early rhubarb can be ‘forced’ inside up-turned dust bins, but only do this with established plants. Place a black bin (or terracotta rhubarb forcing jar if you’re a pro) over the plant in early spring, and then enjoy the small, tender and sweet stems as they develop and search for the light. Grown commercially in large dark sheds in the Yorkshire rhubarb triangle - between Wakefield,

Leeds and Morley - this wonderful vegetable (classed as a fruit for tax reasons) can also be divided up this month if you have a large overgrown patch. Happy Gardening

Until next time, happy gardening ,

Lee .

Misson & Springs WI Music Live at the Phoenix After our summer break, we had a members’ evening on Wednesday 27th August, which gave us an excellent opportunity to catch up on each others’ news and also to hear about the proposed fracking plans for Misson Village. We also had a lot to discuss as we made final preparations for the Leger Group Rally when eight WI branches were entertained to Afternoon Tea and Talk in Misson Primary School on Saturday 13th September Everyone had worked hard to make it a special afternoon; vintage tea sets, cake stands, rarely-used pastry forks were brought out and carefully washed to provide beautiful table settings, with linen napkins made by Liz Rowe and perfectly folded and tied with a ribbon decorated with a Suffolk puff. (For those not in the know, this is a circle of material drawn up with a thread to make a lovely fabric flower) Liz was helped by Thimbles of Misson, who all collaborated to design and make an original quilt which provided a raffle prize. Sandwiches from Feast of Bawtry and cakes made by our members provided a splendid tea, and the talk was given by Dr Melanie Keene of Homerton College, Cambridge who gave us a fascinating glimpse into how education in Victorian England – especially in science, was centred on everyday objects. Other WI branches supported the afternoon with a tombola stall, a bottle stall and home-made preserves and cakes were also on sale. On 24th September we will welcome George Buchanan to talk to us about Growing Up at Hodsock Priory, and looking ahead to October, we are having a members’ evening and another chance for us to taste and swap our favourite recipes. We are already planning next year’s calendar and have some more interesting evening planned; we look forward to your joining us, either as a member for the whole year or as a guest at individual meetings. Please contact our President, Joanna Phillips on 07747443374 for more information, or turn up on the last Wednesday of every month, at the Community Centre, Vicar Lane, Misson, where you will be very welcome. We always make sure that we have time for a chat and our excellent catering team provides an endless supply of refreshments, which includes home-made cake. T 46

It was in 2009 when John last came to the Phoenix as part of a trio with Mark Addison and Phil Biggs. The trio was then named "Better late than Naked", they are now "Between the Lines". Phil plays guitar and mandola (occasionally flute!) John guitar and mandolin and Mark bass and mandolin and they all contribute vocals and harmonies. Their repertoire is wide ranging with some self penned songs from Mark and Phil. "Change for Two Tenors" will be hosting the evening and have added some new gems to their repertoire. The concert is on Friday October 3rd starting at 7.45 pm with doors open at 7 pm for preconcert drinks and chat. The Party Austerfield Study Centre On the 12th July this year the Austerfield Study centre hosted 'The Party', an event to celebrate their first successful year as a social enterprise. After the near closure of the centre in 2013 the centre has survived through the hard work of volunteers and financial funders and the passion of the community. Much work has been undertaken to refresh and refurbish the building bringing it up to modern standards, to enable it to continue providing valuable environmental education to school children and community groups alike. The threat of closure clearly touched the hearts of the public as many of them had attended the centre as children as did their children in the years to follow. This has been shown through the tireless support of many. Equipment, money and time has been so generously given this year and now the centre is a real focal point, a meeting place, a community centre and an ever stronger environmental education centre as it was for 40 years previous. The Party marked this achievement and even though it was not primarily a fund raiser, the heartwarming generosity of the public still saw donations exceeding 700 pounds on the day. The sun shone brightly and the gates opened to around 350 people. The children were able to enjoy

crafts with Susan Forbes, a Falconry experience with Hawks of Steel, an Archaeological dig with Louise Elliot, a bouncy castle provided by The Mayflower School and games galore made possible by the community. Organic veg and honey from Pollybell Organics was on offer and Deli 21 of Tickhill provided delightful tasters for all. The Ship Inn at Newington put on an amazing BBQ and kept everyone was well fed all afternoon. Entertainment was provided by local Austerfield band 'Roote' and The Hayfield School choir, in particular a young soloist that stole the hearts of the public with her rendition of 'I Dreamed a Dream'. 16 year old Emma Spencer silenced the crowed with her beautiful voice. Her song seemed perfectly apt for the day as a year ago the future of the centre seemed like such a dream to many but this year has turned those dreams into reality and with the continued support of the public there is a bright future ahead. When people come together they can achieve great things and the Austerfield Study Centre is a wonderful example of this. Thank you to all who came to 'The Party' and all who have made this possible. Let’s keep going! T

Tickhill and Bawtry Probus Club Our membership has now risen to 79, a record high. We are very pleased to welcome all those who have joined in recent months and hope that they will enjoy friendship and fellowship with us for many years to come. We are probably best known as the retired businessmen’s club which meets every 2nd and 4th Thursday at 10.00am at the Millstone, but from time to time we do more than that.

ROSSINGTON MALE VOICE CHOIR.......

On 11th August members, partners and friends set off for Scotland for a very full three days of activities. On the second day, a morning visit to Stirling Castle was followed by a ‘sailing’ on the Falkirk Wheel and, in the evening, by the highlight of the trip, the Royal Edinburgh Military Tattoo. On our final morning, we explored the Royal Yacht before returning home. Add in a very comfortable hotel and some splendid meals, and a very enjoyable time was had by all. Congratulations and thanks to David Green for a masterpiece of organisation.

Men and boys from eight to eighty are very welcome and a warm and convivial reception is assured.

But back to the 2nd and 4th Thursday meetings. Our programme for the rest of the year is as follows; th Oct. 23rd Oct. 13th Nov. 27th Nov. 11th Dec. 25th Dec.

“Dunkirk/Battle of Britain” R. Wimpenny “TICKHILL, discover its past” Carol Hill “Remembrance” Evan Anderson Members Lunch at the Millstone Hodsock Priory G. Buchanan NO MEETING !

are again appealing for new members to join us. We meet each Wednesday in the Ragusa Drive Community Centre on Radburn Road, Rossington at 7.30.p.m.

An interest in singing and enjoyment of social appreciation is more important than actual singing talent. Please come along and listen to our practice, then join in if you wish to. It could be the start of an interesting and stimulating hobby. Please contact Allan Robson on 01302 860623 for more details if necessary. T

If you are not already a member but would like to see what goes on you will be very welcome as a guest at any meeting other than the members’ lunch on 27th November. After the meeting you may enjoy a drink in the bar with new friends or perhaps even stay for lunch. See if you can resist the temptation to join – most can’t! T

Scoot Safely I am one of many mobility scooter drivers in South Yorkshire. A friend of mine who is an Officer in the Doncaster 50Plus was recently severely injured by a Scooter like mine. She is listed as one of the statistics below. We have persuaded the South Yorkshire Partnership and Parkgate Mobility to put on their excellent two hour course which has the support of the Police, in Rossington at the Holmescarr Community Centre on Friday 21st November 2014 beginning at 1pm. The course is free of charge. Scooters are being provided for Participants by Parkgate Mobility. There has been a lot of adverse publicity aimed at poor scooter drivers. This course will encourage drivers to drive with more consideration for pedestrians and other road users; the Law and third party insurance will be explained. We will be told what type and size can be accommodated on trains, buses and coaches Over the last seven years, in South Yorkshire, there have been six fatal accidents and 57 serious / life changing accidents involving scooters and powered wheelchairs. DON’T MAKE THESE STATISTICS. WORSE! The course is free for people of any age. DO NOT bring your own scooter or wheelchair. They will be provided. There is time for your group to organise transport to get you to the Holmescarr Community Centre in Grange Lane Rossington DN11 0LP and back. If you have difficulties, please let us know at the contact points below. Bawtry Town Council - SEPTEMBER 2014 The Bawtry Town Councillors have become aware that the people of Bawtry are being misled by petitions and items posted on social media, mainly in relation to the Market Hill car park and the revenue from it. Most people have forgotten, and those who were not here at the time do not believe what they are told, but the fact is that the parking charges were introduced in 2014 to clear the car park of cars parked all day by people who would, for example, come in four cars, leave three in the car park and all go in the fourth to Doncaster or Sheffield, thus depriving genuine visitors to Bawtry of a parking space. The parking charges have generated income for the council and this has been a bonus. The income is shared with Excel parking but the Council receives no income from fines. This income has allowed the Council to keep the precept (the part of the council tax which comes to Bawtry council) unchanged for the past ten years despite frequent increases in the overall council tax. The recent changes in the parking charges were approved by the council because it was unfair to the businesses opening in Bawtry

during the day that their customers would have to pay parking charges while those patronising night time businesses did not. It would be helpful to explain how the council tax paid by Bawtry residents is calculated as it seems that there are people in Bawtry who think that the Town Council receives it all. The tax for this year is made up by: South Yorkshire Fire & Rescue 4.9% South Yorkshire police 10.7% Doncaster Metropolitan borough Council 83% Bawtry Town Council (Precept) 1.4% As the precept has remained unchanged the overall council tax bill for Bawtry residents is 2% lower than if it had gone up in proportion to the other taxes. This reduction cannot be continued without the income from the car park. The businesses in Bawtry do not pay council tax. They pay business rates which go directly to the government at Westminster (Chancellor of the Exchequer) and not the local community. The businesses do not benefit from the income from the car park and will not be penalised if it is not available.

Community Dementia Friends Support Caring for someone with dementia can be a long, stressful, and intensely emotional journey. But you're not alone. In the UK, there are about 800,000 people living with dementia, and millions of others around the world. As a caregiving you can make the biggest difference to your loved one's quality of life. That is a remarkable gift. However, caregiving can also become overwhelming. As your loved one's cognitive, physical, and functional abilities diminish over a period of years, it's easy to neglect your own health and well-being. The burden of caregiving can put you at increased risk for significant health problems you could experience depression, stress, and as a caregiver you may at some time experience sadness, anxiety, loneliness, and exhaustion Seeking help and support along the way is not a luxury for caregivers; it's a necessity. However, there are strategies that can help make the caregiving journey as rewarding as it is challenging. Learning all you can about what is happening and what to expect on the dementia journey will not only help your loved one, but is also the first step towards protecting your own physical health. Benefits of attending one of the Community Dementia Friends Support groups below maybe:-

• an opportunity to share information • a chance to meet other people with dementia and their carers • sharing experiences and resolutions to problems • emotional and practical support • information and sign posting about local services • an opportunity of joining in activities
