Another school year is coming to an end and another set up young people are heading towards leaving behind a nursery, school or college. Hopefully although sad about leaving they will be looking forward to the challenges ahead as they enter the next phase of their education or move into the workplace.

Just like in June you can find a summer fair, gala or other outdoor event to go to most weekends through July. You will find details of many such events throughout this magazine.

Annual Village Show and Scarecrow Festival on Saturday 7th & Sunday 8th September.

This was a new initiative in our village in 2018 which was a huge success, therefore in conjunction with the village show, there will be another scarecrow weekend. Last year saw well over 50 entries around the village, let’s see if this year that number can be doubled!

Our Wednesday, 3rd July lecture is on ' Women in the Mauritshuis ' as displayed at The Hague Gallery, Netherlands.

The Mauritshuis Art Museum is home to the very best of Dutch golden age painting. This compact, world renowned collection includes Vermeer's ' Girl with a Pearl earring ' plus several paintings

by Rembrandt and other famous Dutch painters.

Using some of the masterpieces in the exhibition, the lecture will explore not only the roles played by women but also introduce you to some of the artists and the kind of works they produced and the styles they used.

If you have an interest in the arts and would like to learn more, please come along to one of our meetings. We have monthly Lecture meetings (on the first Wednesday of the month, except for summer and winter breaks) and two extra, Special Interest days. We also have trips out to places of interest and a holiday for Members.

Holiday Time It’s that time of year again when boutique window displays are tempting us with beautiful swimwear … the realisation hits that summer holidays are almost here and we’re going to have to wear a swimsuit again! Yes, all the parts that we have managed to ignore all year by hiding under clothes will now be exposed for all to see.

Generally, if you have a tummy that you prefer to keep hidden then a swimsuit is going to make you feel more confident. Look out for designs with a concealed panel that helps sculpt the body and hold everything in. Also the Tankini is a great in-betweener for the days when you want a bit more cover from your bikini, or alternatively want a bit of a change from your one-piece.

There are a variety of combinations: plain, patterned, cropped, and under wired; with bottoms that are low-slung, sidetied, shorts….

Plain or patterned is down to taste but remember if you have a straight body, the geometric patterns will flatter you more than the more rounded, floral patterns, which will compete with your lines. Those are far more suited to curvier figures.

When it comes to colour, the same rules apply. Look for colours and shades that flatter your skin tone rather than contrast with it and it will knock pounds off.

String tied bottoms are good for drawing the eye away from challenging areas and have the added benefit that you don’t tend to get tan marks. Be warned though, itsy-bitsy-teeny-weeny bikini bottoms are designed for itsy-bitsy-teeny-weeny bottoms.

Those with a larger posterior will feel less exposed in a fuller style brief, or the short styles. Steer clear of patterns on any part of your body that you do not want attention drawn to, e.g. eyecatching designs on the cups of a bikini or tankini draw the eye directly to the bust.

Finally, the classic string bikini.

If you have an athletic or neat hourglass figure then go for it!

Have fun with colour and patterns.

It may be raining in Britain when you buy it but look forward to blue skies, warm sunshine and sipping that cocktail …

Don’t forget that your beachwear pretty much takes the place of your underwear whilst you are

on holiday. If you usually need to wear a bra with a lot of support then your bikini needs to do the same. Many swimwear ranges are now available in a variety of cup sizes. Why it has taken so long to do something so obvious goodness only knows!

Be a real beach babe: wear a hat to protect your hair and face in the midday sun. Simply pack your hat inside a suitcase by filling the crown with small items, such as underwear; place hat the right way up in the centre on the bottom of an empty suitcase; pack in remaining items around the hat to securely hold its shape.

In our last article we wrote that we were planning for more galas that were scheduled in our calendar of events. The galas come thick and fast, and we

no sooner complete entries for 1, then we are preparing for entries into the next. We would like to acknowledge the hard work put in by Tamsin Watkins and Janice Wilkie who keep us in check with gala entries and payments.

Swimming galas, despite the stifling heat, are great events with a wonderful atmosphere both poolside and in the spectator area. Our swimmers continue to do themselves and the Club proud: congratulations to one of our Club swimmers and Bassetlaw A-Squad members, Dominic, who recently competed in the East Midlands Regional Championships with a fabulous performance in his events; many of our swimmers also enjoyed success at the 2-day Rotherham Metro gala in May with a 93% success rate in achieving Personal Bests; and we have recently taken our younger swimmers aged 9 and under to a friendly meet with Retford Swimming Club in June where they had a chance to practise their gala technique without the pressure of the “real deal”! As you can see from the photo, we had lots of smiling faces, and they all did really well. Finally (at least for the

time being) we have another 3 galas between now (at the time of writing) and the end of July. Busy, busy… #nonstopswimming Now for something slightly different… in the coming weeks, when the weather warms up (so I am being told), we will again be participating in “open water” swimming at Hatfield. This was a great event which the Club (both swimmers and parents) enjoyed last year and I am reliably told that the water is “quite inviting”. This has not convinced me sufficiently to join in, so I will watch enthusiastically from the lake-side as everyone else dons their wetsuits and braves the pondweed.

I would like to end this newsletter by conveying our thanks to the Tickhill & District Lions association - we are delighted that we have just received some funding from the group which will enable us to further develop as a Club. This is very much appreciated and a BIG Thank You to them.

CHESTERFIELD CANAL WALKING FESTIVAL

T

Taking in three counties and 46 miles of tow paths over nine days, the Chesterfield Canal Walking Festival is billed as the biggest canal walking event in the country.

Organised by the Chesterfield Canal Trust, the festival will run from Saturday 14th to Sunday 22nd September with a total of 53 guided walks - the majority of which are free - ranging from a children’s walk of just two miles to the full 46-mile length of the canal in three days.

The Trust’s Walks Officer, David Blackburn, who has been researching and leading walks for over 20 years, said: “The canal is an absolute delight at any time of year, but early Autumn possibly sees it at its best. There are walks for all ages and abilities, including specialist interest walks and combined walks and boat trips for people who would like a more relaxing day out.

“We are very grateful to everyone who has helped us to put this festival together and to our sponsors Bassetlaw District Council and the Canal & River Trust.”

There are special interest walks, e.g. Nature, History, Architecture, Restoration, Bird spotting, Bat spotting and Geocaching. Some walks will explore the attractive towns and villages in North Nottinghamshire.

There are opportunities to combine a walk from two miles up to seven miles, with a cruise on one of the Trust’s trip boats.

Several walks will investigate the section of the Chesterfield Canal that has not yet been restored and will reveal plans on how this will take place.

CANCER DETECTION TRUST T Hopefully the sun will be shining by the time you read this after a wet start to June! We haven’t a final figure yet

for the Midsummer Walk donations as Christine from Thorne Rural Lions has been on holiday. Will report back as soon as possible. In the meantime our sincere thanks to everyone who took part (and their sponsors) – we had almost 200 walkers and thankfully it was a dry day. Our grateful thanks also to Lions International, particularly Thorne Rural Lions, for all their hard work.

A reminder that we have a stall at Bentley Gala on Sunday, 14th July where we will be selling jewellery and other goodies. The Gala will be in Bentley Park from 1-5pm with lots to do and see for all the family. Come along and join in the fun.

Also Optima International on Askern Road at Toll Bar will be holding their annual Open Day on Friday, 26th July from 12-5pm. Entry is £5 on the day, but £4 if bought from the company beforehand. All rides are free and unlimited.

A bar and refreshments are available. This is another popular event and money raised goes to charities (including DCDT).

A reminder that we will also have a stall at Auckley Show on Saturday, 17th August. Details will be in next publication. Let’s hope the sun shines for all these events as there is a lot of hard work behind the scenes in organising them.

DONCASTER HF RAMBLING CLUB T

Doncaster HF Rambling Club is an independent, non-profit-making walking club founded in 1948 which strives to provide opportunities for the healthy enjoyment of the countryside, in a spirit of friendship and fun.

With many members from Doncaster and beyond, we organise walks to take place every two weeks on alternate Sundays, visiting a wide range of locations in the Peak District, the Yorkshire Dales, North Yorkshire Moors and coast, the Yorkshire Wolds, Lincolnshire Wolds, the South Pennines, and Staffordshire. Our web-site www. doncasterhframblingclub.org.uk gives a pictorial record of our walks which can be accessed from the drop-down menu under ‘Recent Walks’ and ‘Where We Go’. At each location we offer a choice of three guided walks of varying degrees of distance and difficulty, an example of which can be found in the menu under ‘Next Walk’. We also organise residential visits to more distant areas such as the Lake District, South Derbyshire and Northumberland.

We provide transport to all our walk locations by private coach, with members boarding and being dropped off at a number of points in and around Doncaster, listed in the drop-down menu under ‘Booking Walks’.

We welcome prospective new members by encouraging them to participate in a couple of walks before asking them to pay our annual membership subscription. However we do ask that they pay the coach fare which is currently set at £10 for the entire journey.

Kip Combes (1924-2013) was a prominent figure on the local art scene and a president of the Worksop Society of Artists, while his son Richard is a highly respected New York-based artist who has exhibited internationally and has work in major private collections worldwide. During the early stages of World War II, Kip Combes was evacuated to Retford with his family and, apart from a period of living in Manchester, he remained in the town for the rest of his life. Richard was brought up in Retford and worked as an architect in the UK before moving to New York City. There he earned Master’s degree in painting at the New York Academy of Art and his remarkable skills and mastery of techniques have earned him multiple awards and a full membership of the Royal Institute of Oil Painters. Although many of Richard’s works are realistic representations of people and objects, they are not just skilful depictions of subjects. His art transports viewers into the middle of an intriguing,

unfinished story and makes them wonder about how it continues. This exceptional artistry transforms everyday spaces and objects into extraordinary images that are both absorbing and haunting. www.bassetlaw.museum.gov.uk Yorkshire Sculpture Park DAMIAN HURST has arrived and his enormous eye-sores cannot be missed as you make your way hot foot from the main carpark to the new and wonderful Weston Gallery. The Weston is a small addition to YSP, and mainly an eatery, but the gallery itself is a lovely airy light space with a really interesting and beautiful exhibition by Punjabi artists THUKRAL & TAGRA whose work discusses the problems faced by subsistence farmers in the Punjab.

It may not sound artistically interesting stuff, but the show is beautiful and intriguing and enjoyable and we had an engaging visit.

When in doubt, ask the gallery staff. At YSP in particular they are always friendly and helpful. Until 5 Jan 2020 DAVID SMITH will be found in the Underground Gallery and surrounding area. David Smith (1906-65) is the American artist who took sculpture off the plinth and made it in steel and stainless steel. We are so used to seeing what he developed that it perhaps sounds rather obvious. HMP Lindholme is close to Hatfield Woodhouse and Doncaster, a Category C training prison, with around 1,000 prisoners. We perform

vital roles for Ministers and the public providing an unbiased oversight of the prison.

Members are unpaid but do claim costs for travel and financial loss. Duties include; monitoring fairness and humanity, the range and adequacy of programmes, taking prisoner applications, raising concerns with the Governor and reporting annually to the Minister.

Applicants must be over 18 with a very mature outlook on life and live within 30 miles of the prison. We welcome all who are interested and strive to achieve a balanced Board. Applicants must possess the interest and time, about 5 days a month, to make a full contribution, which can include callouts to the prison (at any time) for incidents, so full training is given. Members are open minded, committed to diversity, equality and human rights, able to challenge, with the ability to maintain confidentiality, we are good team players and have the willingness to take responsibility.

DONCASTER RAMBLER’S A local walk to Blaxton and back T

It continues to amaze me how many little gem footpaths there are around Doncaster. When I read “a leisurely walk to Blaxton and back to Finningley” I thought, “is it worth it, we’ve walked this area a thousand times?” But you know what, Hilda our walk leader, pulled it out of the bag, and took us places new and unexplored.

Starting at the village green Hilda took us a short circuit round Finningly past the church and playing fields, over the railway and north to the eastern edge of Blaxton. We then continued north to High Common wood, then turning right and right again heading south to the west of Blaxton and back to Finningley where we made a final wider circuit of the village back to the green.

Yet this walk wasn’t just about the direction, or even the changing landscape, it was about the atmosphere, standing in the village green surrounded by ducks, or lost in a wood with bird song. Or diving through a tunnel of gorse as your mates disappear, then dancing around the edge of a puddle hoping not to fall in.

This walk took us from field edge to forest and back to field edge, winding through the environs of Blaxton and Finningley, in some cases no more than 100 meters from houses, yet could be in the middle of nowhere! Places where memories of childhood adventures come back to life. That’s what a walk like this is all about. Brilliant Hilda thank you.

Would you want to be the Prime Minister?

As we have gone through the process of watching, initially, 11 men and women jostling and manoeuvring for position; making great promises and exalting themselves as the best candidate available; time and time again I’ve found myself wondering why on earth anyone would want that job. I understand the desire for status, for glory, for the chance to change history; but do you really, honestly, think you would want to be responsible for sorting out Brexit? That’s quite apart from all the “ordinary” stresses and strains of leading the country.

I don’t think I would mind being the leader of the opposition quite as much; that would involve being able to criticise everything the government does without having to try and implement my own ideas. Though, like being the Prime Minister, you would get a constant barrage of criticism, no matter what you said or did; and I don’t think I have skin thick enough to put up with it for very long.

Most of us need a lot of encouragement and praise, just in order to keep going. We take negative criticism seriously, but are quick to play down any praise. Psychologists tells us that, in order to function well, people need seven positive comments before being given a negative one. Knowing that, however, means that when

someone starts telling me I did something well or that I had helped them, the cynic in me reacts thinking; “I’m only being told these nice things because what they are leading up to say is going to be hard to hear” and so I find myself automatically filtering out the positive. When watching politicians being hammered by other politicians, journalists, etc; part of me wonders how on earth they manage to keep going. In my mind, it did Theresa May no harm at all to be seen crying when she resigned – I was reassured by her feeling… what? Hurt? Rejected? Let down? That she had failed?

Biblical Christians take great comfort from the socalled heroes in the Bible. Jesus of Nazareth aside, every man and woman used by God was flawed in one way or another: King David succumbed to his lust; the disciple Peter felt threatened by a servant girl and blasphemed his way out of an awkward situation; Rahab was incredibly brave and exercised great faith when she helped God’s people escape their enemies, yet she was a prostitute. I could go on. I love the Bible verse where St Paul says; “But The Lord said to me, ‘My grace is sufficient for you, for my power is made perfect in weakness.’.” (2 Corinthians 12v9) because it tells us that my weaknesses are no problem for God, in fact; they’re a strength.

I wonder what we, the public, would think of our politicians if they were honest about their failings, their lack of confidence, their confusion, etc. I don’t think we would think any less of them; we might even respect them for it.

PRINCE CHARMING T

Prince is one of the long stay rescue dogs at the RSPCA South Yorkshire Animal Centre. He is a handsome boy, full of

energy and life when outside, who loves running around the paddock with his favourite toy - he is also partial to a good snooze in his kennel. Prince has been at the Centre for many months and his successful re-homing into a loving home is a priority.

Caring for animals like Prince, who are in the Animal Centre through no fault of their own requires considerable funding. With rehabilitation high on the list of priorities for the Branch, time and resources are central to achieving our aim and these need funding.

One way RSPCA Doncaster, Rotherham and District Branch achieves this is through events that offer supporters a chance to enjoy quality time with friends and family and raise funds to support vital welfare work with animals such as Prince.

2019 has already seen some fantastic events: the Easter Egg Puzzle Hunt was hugely successful and drew in over twice the number of people than it did last year; Big Walkies around the beautiful Thrybergh was a great event, giving folk time to share their love of dogs and dog walking and the Pea ‘n’ Pie Supper and Pub Quiz was a sell-out success, which raised vital funds, and as always our annual Fun Dog Show was a huge success. All of the money raised is used to support the animal welfare work at the RSPCA South Yorkshire Animal Centre and so far this year over 330 dogs, cats, rabbits and small animals have been successfully rehabilitated and re-homed With even more exciting events coming soon, such as the Zip Line Challenge and Glitter Disco we will be able to support even more animals like Prince, who depend on us for that second chance. So please come and join us at our events.

MISSON & SPRINGS WI T Bonnie Tyler proclaimed in her 1984 hit song that she was holding out for a hero. Well, in her talk to us this week Victoria

Howard, from the Romantic Novelists’ Association, went into great detail about the various heroes that some of us may still be ‘holding out for’, those which inspire her stories and those which her readers love to read about. Her talk, entitled ‘I Need a Hero’ explained how she puts together the characters of the heroes of her books and that they are not all necessarily ‘hunks’. As an author of romantic suspense novels, Victoria explained that not only does the story have to be engrossing, but the characters also need to be compelling today’s readers are a little more discerning than in the early days of romantic novels. She had copies of her books available for sale and our ladies and guests very much enjoyed her interesting talk and the delights of our ever-generous refreshments.

In June our speaker will be Jeff Jacklin who will tell us all about life in the NHS. His talk is entitled ‘It Only Hurts When I Laugh’, so if you would like to be tickled pink do come along and join us for what promises to be a very entertaining evening; you will be most welcome at our warm and friendly group. Indeed, our speaker from April took the trouble to write to the Federation office “to particularly commend the ladies of Misson and Springs on how they ‘look after’ their guests…. they are a great crowd.”

COMMUNITY On Thursday 6th June 2019 a bowls knockout competition was held on the ‘green’, to commemorate the 100th anniversary of the formation of the club. Prior to the start of

the competition, snippets of information, extracted from the minute book, were read out to the competitors.

These snippets included:On 6th June 1919 a number of bowling enthusiasts met on the cricket field and formed this bowling club. A committee comprising 8 members was formed and Mr Taylor was appointed Chairman.

It is recorded that it was decided that soldiers would be allowed to join (were they a different breed in 1919 !!!).

It was decided to hire a man to mow the grass and Mr Hogbin’s offer to supply a mowing machine and horse was accepted.

In February 1920 subscriptions

BAWTRY BOWLS CLUB CENTENARY YEAR T

were raised from 5 shillings to 10 shillings and sixpence and ladies were to admitted at a cost of 5 shillings.

An official opening day of both the Bowling and Tennis Clubs took place on 22nd May 1920 and was opened by Mr and Mrs Peake. They bowled the first jack and woods and hit the first tennis ball over the net.

Also in May it was decided that players must wear the proper shoes and use a mat. Visitors were to be charged sixpence.

There would also be no play on Sundays.

In January 1921 it was agreed to write to Crowle, Adwick le Street, Doncaster Plant Works, Retford, Dinnington, Rossington and Worksop to arrange matches for the coming season. (Obviously transport was no problem !!).

In July 1922 Mr Peacock’s offer of donating a live pig, to be bowled for, was accepted.

In December 1922 an Xmas raffle was held, the main prizes being a live pig, a turkey, geese, pheasants, rabbits, hare and whiskey (the good old days !!).

BAWTRY GARDEN CLUB The speaker at our June meeting was Sandra Bright, who was runner-up of the BBC 'Allotment Challenge' in 2014. What an amazing lady! She told of her journey from being allocated her piece of land, planning and growing her vegetables, fruit, flowers and salad items. She travelled from North Lincolnshire to the Reading area to tend her allotment 3 days a week over an 18 weeks period. All this before the actual competition began! She came across as a very inspirational lady with a great deal of determination to succeed. Her

main passion these days is growing flowers, and Sandra demonstrated putting together a beautiful simple bouquet using solely English flowers and greenery, which she kindly donated as a raffle prize.

The Club are looking forward to their weekend trip to Wisley and Kew Gardens at the end of June.

At our meeting on Tuesday 2nd July at 7.00pm, the talk is about 'Hostas' by Sue Proctor. Guests are assured of a warm welcome, so please come along if this topic is of interest to you.

Tickets cost sixpence each.

In January 1923 a dance followed by a whist drive was held and the Town Cryer was paid one shillings and sixpence to go round advertising the event (slightly different from advertising in ‘Bawtry Today’).

After reading out these snippets the competition commenced.

18 members participated, the eventual winner being Paddy Moyles who defeated Hazel Cuthbert in the final.

Health and Safety regulations wouldn’t allow the club to give a live pig, so in addition to receiving a trophy Paddy was presented with a ‘pack of bacon’.

All members who attended, appeared to enjoy the competition, but sadly none of us will be around for the next centenary celebrations!!

Perched on my favourite branch last evening I did some thinking.

It was quiet, you see. The flurry of feeding is slowing. The young are nearly fledged. Not so successful this year, I'm afraid. To be expected.

Ahh, the bliss of quiet. Just the breeze, birdsong and me. The air is better, too. That awful time of diesel fumes and constant clanking, generators and HGVs. What on earth are you Humans thinking of? How long until they come back? So unsettling. So offensive.

Talking of offensive, what's with all this litter I'm seeing? Road verges filling with take-away cartons. Hedge bottoms filling with cans and bottles. Shameful fly-tipping.

So irresponsible.

To lift my spirits I caught up with events on the top of Mam Tor. Lots of hearty Humans gathered there in June to Stand Up For the Planet. Two observations if I may: flying is easier and more efficient than climbing judging by the red-faced breathlessness.

More importantly, the fun, singing and sentiments convinced me Humans do love nature. Respect nature. Fight to save nature from abuse.

So, the time to act is now. Do everything you can to keep our clean air, clean soil and clean water.

Enjoy the summer days. Keep safe and stay safe.

BAWTRY RESIDENTS GROUP

At the last Bawtry Town Council meeting Cllr Alan Claypole was re-elected as the Town Mayor for a further year and Cllr D Cartwright also re-elected as Deputy Mayor for a further year. It is the belief of the Bawtry Residents Group that under the continued stewardship of Alan and Doug the town will continue to move forward.

Sadly, we have received reports that our town is being blighted by anti-social behaviour taking place in the cemetery. It would be appear that some people find it acceptable to use the cemetery as a meeting place for taking drugs. Residents are advised to contact the police if they see this type of behaviour taking place in and around Bawtry.

I cannot stress enough the necessity for all that read this magazine to join the neighbourhood watch scheme, the scheme is growing in strength, but the more members we have, the more chance we have of rooting out the problems of anti-social behaviour, anyone wishing to join the scheme please contact this email:- bedford@btconnect. com. On no account will names or contact details be passed on by any of the administrators of the scheme, we all must look after our town.

The last Bawtry Residents Group meeting was held on the

30/05/2019 at the Crown Hotel, the guest speaker was our local ward councillor Rachael Blake, who spoke about the new Health and Well Being initiative recently launched.

Following two awareness sessions held earlier in the year Rachael has set up a Bawtry Health and Wellbeing Group. It is hoped that many of the ideas suggested by residents at the awareness sessions will soon begin (chair based exercises at peaks croft, Physical Activity sessions with luncheon at the Austerfield study centre, Dementia Awareness sessions) being just a few of the ideas.

Rachael will be attending the Sports day at the MSG should you want any more information or if you want to get involved with the group, please go along and have tea and a chat with Rachael.

Another event to be held this year is a Fancy dress for the youngsters of the town, it will be held at the Memorial Sports Ground on the 2nd of November, further details will be in this magazine as the event draws closer.

Anyone wishing to attend the next meeting of the wellbeing group, please come along to the New Hall on Station Road on the 18th of June at 7pm.

Just a quick update from the last couple of BTC meetings, the moving of the War Memorial, it was confirmed at the latest BTC meeting that there was a problem getting a start date from the contractor who will be moving the memorial due to a delay in the trees being pruned before work can start.

The BTC project of replacing the footpath along Market Hill will hopefully be starting in April 2020, the seat that was recently destroyed outside the library will be replaced and finally DMBC have now granted planning permission for BTC to erect a fruit and vegetable stall on Market Hill although disappointingly DMBC have initially only granted BTC planning consent for 3 years.

I am pleased to report that Bawtry Town Council are organising a Christmas Lunch for our elderly residents, as last year it will be held in Bawtry Hall on the 3rd December. As last year, places are limited and residents will need to complete an application form if they wish to be considered for a place, more details of where and when the forms can be obtained will be publicised in September.

Thank you to all those residents who recently responded to the BTC question regarding what improvements residents like to see in the town. Hopefully, both DMBC via Rachael Blake and BTC will action as many of the suggestions as possible and

Finally, we have received numerous complaints about dog owners not picking up theirs dog faeces when walking through the Wharf Street play area. A big thank you to the Scouts for placing modified bottles full of dog waste bags on the entrance to the grassed area of the park and on Church Street, hopefully dog owners will start using them. DMBC wardens will be undertaking random checks in and around the park and will issue fines to any dog owners caught not picking up theirs dog faeces.

Plans are well underway for the Visit Bawtry Cup on Sunday 14th of July. The event will take place at Bawtry polo Club Misson Springs which opened earlier this year. Our Annual Concert, entitled “It’s Showtime” took place on Saturday 1st June at Tickhill Methodist Church. The concert was extremely well attended and we received excellent feedback on the content and the production. The choir sang items from the shows and there was some audience participation, which seemed to go down well. The choir now continues with rehearsals in preparation for the rest of our summer programme.

We are looking for new members to join our group of mixed skilled artists. We are a lively bunch of people with different skill sets, so if you are like many of us who had never painted before, join us and give it a go, we are sure you will enjoy it.

Austerfield Parish Council News: JULY 2019

Chairman’s Report 2019 Another year has zipped by, the continuing issue of speeding in the village is a problem, the speed enforcement team camera has been present as differing times over the year, and we can only hope that this will have a positive effect. After a number of speed related accidents we have been left without two lampposts and considerable damage to resident’s properties.

The village show was not as well supported as hoped although, those that entered and attended the show enjoyed the day. The proceeds from the show were donated to Austerfield Study Centre, Mayflower Animal Sanctuary and Juvenile Diabetes Research Foundation. The Christmas lunch arranged for the senior residents was again well supported and enjoyed by all who attended. Bawtry Carbon International provided the village with a Christmas tree and lights and a small event was held to mark the start of the festive period.

Work in the memorial garden is underway to make this a space for all residents to enjoy, I would like to thank all those involved with the project. We now have another noticeboard in Austerfield and thank you to Barrie Crawford for building and fitting this.

This year we introduced a community grant scheme and are hopeful that it will be used by residents.

We have also employed a handyman to carry out maintenance work in the village and have had adult exercise equipment installed on the recreation field.

On another positive note we are once again able to fund the grass cutting in St Helena’s churchyard.

I would like to thank my fellow Councillors for their hard work and support over the year, thanks also to our new handyman and as ever to Sarah for her commitment, support and hard work.

UPDATE FROM COUNCILLORS RACHAEL BLAKE AND MICK COOPER Your DMBC Councillors

I have often commented on these updates about how organisations in Bawtry and Austerfield work so well together and the work we will be doing in response to a post on the Bawtry Residents Group facebook page on behalf of Bawtry Town Council asking people what improvements they would like to see demonstrates this partnership working. I realise that not everyone uses Facebook so we are going to be talking about doing something similar so everyone can give their views – more about the work that has been undertaken so far is included in this update. If you are not yet a member of the Neighbourhood Watch group, please do consider joining. It really is a good way to find out what is happening and it is reassuring to know that we are all looking out for each other and by working together we will make it harder for those people intent on committing burglary and anti-social behaviour.

Updates on some of the Issues raised on the Residents Group Facebook Page Doncaster Road dropped kerbs – a request for these has been made and a reply received that these will be put in – please do let me know if there are other areas that you feel would benefit from dropped kerbs Trees needing cutting back - I have reported a number of areas where there are overhanging trees – some are the responsibility of Doncaster Council – others are private landowners.

I will be working with Bawtry Town Council and the Residents Group to address all the issues raised and we will be providing updates over the next few months Argosy Close/Martin Lane and litter and dog fouling across the Town As reported in previous updates I have asked Doncaster Council’s enforcement team to regularly patrol Bawtry and Austerfield to deter dog fouling, littering and parking infringements. To date they haven’t been successful in catching any irresponsible dog owners or people dropping litter but they have issued parking notices 15 times where there are parking infringements. I am aware as well that there are particular problems on Argosy/Martin Lane. I am aware that many people walk up to Bawtry Forest but there isn’t a bin in the area which I have now requested. The enforcement team will be continuing across the ward.

Closure of Gainsborough Road An overnight closure of Gainsborough Road due to work on the railway bridge will be happening on 22 July from 11pm until 5am on 23 July. There is the usual diversion along Great North Road, and Ranskill Road and Main Street onto Everton.

Bawtry Hall – verges I am aware that this doesn’t look good and a more permanent solution is needed. This isn’t the responsibility of Bawtry Town Council – all of the verges, paths and roads (other than Market

Hill) are the responsibility of Doncaster Council hence my involvement. I am pleased that it has been cut again in early June but it still doesn’t look good enough and I have asked for either permanent wild flowers that seem to be very popular or an arrangement that doesn’t need regular maintenance.

Heritage – volunteers wanted to talk!

The heritage group, thanks to the Phoenix Theatre now has the facilities to record people’s conversations talking about their memories of Bawtry. It’s not too late to get involved so please do contact Rachael if you would like to be involved. All you need to do is come along to the Theatre for a coffee and cake and have a chat with others about your memories. The session will last about 2 hours.

Future Litter picks – 6 July and 19 July Our last litter pick which started on the High street saw us splitting into small groups and covering all of Station Road, Thorne Road, over to Kingswood Close as well as North and South, Doncaster Road and the cemetery. We managed to separate the recyclable waste and had one very large bag of tins and bottles which DMBCs street scene team are ensuring is recycled. The next Saturday morning litter pick will take place at 10am on 6 July starting off from the Hope Centre and 18 July at 7pm – again starting at the Hope Centre. Everyone is very welcome – no experience necessary just a desire to keep our town clean, Contacting Us Paula who produces Bawtry Today kindly contacted Rachael to let her know that a resident had been trying to contact her without any luck but hadn’t left a message. Rachael explained that the phone number she provides is used not just for her councillor work so if you contact Rachael, please do leave a message and she will call you back usually within 24 hours.

Next surgery Rachael will be at the next Library coffee morning on 12 July from 10am – 12pm so do pop in for a chat. Also Rachael attends the Austerfield Parish Council meeting which is usually the 3rd Monday of every month at 7pm in the Study Centre. Also from September we will be holding surgeries on a Saturday morning – location is being decided at the moment as we realise that many people are working so weekdays are not a good time to call into the surgery.

TILL WE MEET AGAIN DEAR FRIENDS,

As the wisdom saying in Ecclesiastes states, “There is a time for everything…”. It continues as, “What do workers gain from their toil? I have seen the burden God has laid on the human race. He has made everything beautiful in its time. He has also set eternity in the human heart; yet no one can fathom what God has done from beginning to end”.

I came to the Doncaster Circuit of the Methodist Church as a Probationer Minister almost 11 years ago. Before that, my family had lived in Bradford and had become accustomed to the cosmopolitan city in West Yorkshire. We were therefore a bit anxious in moving to Doncaster, a town which we had heard of as having many prisons and secured units. In the year we moved to Doncaster, I read from the newspapers about the council and a mayor that had made a bad name for Doncaster.

However, we were taken aback when in our first week in Doncaster, some people stopped to say hello to us on the streets. Some even went further to have great conversations with us. These made us felt at home because it was almost like living in a Ghanaian community.

As a Minister, I have had a fantastic time in Doncaster. I started looking after two churches and finished with five. However, I had great support from my Ministerial colleagues, members of the church and the communities in which I have ministered. I wondered initially whether being a black Minister would have a detrimental effect in my Ministry. I would say that at the start, there were issues of some people understanding my African accent and I understanding a broad Yorkshire accent from some communities. However, as time went on there was a mutual understanding from both sides.

nity called for a particular way of life. I also realised that just like Ghana, most of the communities in which I ministered were close-knit, so I had to be careful of my conduct and conversations.

As a Minister, my vision in Doncaster was for people to know God better and engage with him in the common things they do every day. I remember that at the start of my Ministry in Doncaster, I was interviewed by a representative of a church magazine about my plans for the church in Doncaster.

My response was that I did not come to make people Christians but to help them know who God is and understand their purpose in live because God has set eternity in every human heart. I wonder if the communities that I served can relate to this vision. I believe that God had used me to help some people to realise what great potential they have in knowing God and understanding the purposes of God in their lives. However, I may have to confess that some of my actions and words may have confused some people in understanding who God is.

For those people, I wonder if you can forgive me.

To conclude, my family and I leave Doncaster and Yorkshire with good memories of a county where most people are warm hearted and look out for each other. We move to Southwick in West Sussex hoping never to forget the great memories of Yorkshire puddings, fish and chips, great landscapes, affordable shops and people with great faith in God. By the way, I wonder if I can use this opportunity to invite you to the leaving service at Tickhill Methodist Church on Wednesday 10th July at 7.30 p.m.

This will help me to formally say goodbye to you.
