Quality Meats at Wholesale Prices My name is Bradley Botterill and I am the owner of locally based meat supplier Farmhouse Choice. When I left school at 16, I got a job as an apprentice butcher and to my surprise I picked it up very quickly. By the time I turned 21 I’d bought my own market stall at Doncaster selling a wide range of cooked meats, pies, bacon and sausages.

“ h 5lb Bacon £7.99

5lb Sausage £8.99

Now aged 24 I recently entered my first pork pie competition at the British Pork Executive, It was one of the biggest in the country with 341 entries I came away with champion pork pie maker! Also last month I entered the sausage competition at the Notts County show and was awarded a gold certificate for my Lincolnshire style sausage. We are classed as a wholesaler but have recently opened to the public to offer quality meat at wholesale prices.

30 Eggs £3 BBQ packs 10 beefburgers, 10 sausages, 10 chinese pork steaks, 10 minted lamb steaks

However, it was only three days a week, so I asked Farmhouse Choice my supplier at the time whether they needed a hand at their factory. Luckily for me a position was vacant. Within three weeks of me being there they asked me if I wanted to buy into the business and become a partner. At the time it was a big jump from a small stall holder to factory owner, it also required a small fortune to buy into the business. But I went for it, I got accepted by the bank for a loan and within 18 months I had gone from working for somebody to owning a factory.

Welcome to the June

2015 edition

“The human brain is amazing. It functions 24 hours a day from the time we were born, and only stops when we take an exam!” Exam season is upon us! Schools and colleges up and down the country have been preparing students for the exams that form part of school life from SATs in primary onwards. I have 2 children studying this year, although at the time of writing this my sons AS levels have all already been completed and he has 2 weeks off school ahead of him, much to the disgust of his sister who has barely started her GCSEs and will be spending most of half term in school and has over 2 weeks of exams ahead of her after that, including 3 on one day, which seems particularly harsh! Good luck to all readers who have exams this summer and to their families dealing with keeping them studying, fed and happy! As we move into the summer months there are sure to be plenty of summer fairs, galas, family fun days and outdoor fundraising activities happening across Doncaster in the weeks to come. If you know of any that you would like to see promoted within these pages, then please do let me know or pass my details on to the organisers. Community events are free to advertise, so please take the opportunity to spread the word. The July issue will be delivered to you late June. If you would like to have something included in this, please make sure details are with me by Friday 12th June

Enjoy June and I will be back in a months’ time with your July magazine.

The Group held their latest meeting on Tuesday 5 May. The Treasurer reported that they now have a healthy financial account which will enable them to put on the usual activities and trips that we have enjoyed in the past. The Pay Back Team had been observed hard at work clearing rubbish from the corner of Arundel Walk and Brookside, even in pouring rain and sleet. They are to be congratulated. The trips to Whitby and Bakewell are now full, and a waiting list is being held in case of cancellations. There are a few seats left for the trip to Beamish on 27 May. Concern was expressed at the dangerous situation on Grange Road when youngsters are emerging after playing football on the Tommy Simpson field. Bassetlaw District Council are to be approached to see if they would consider scrapping the fee for removing items of rubbish, as it was felt it was costing them more to go round picking up discarded items, due to people not wishing to pay, or even being unable to pay the heavy cost. The next meeting will be held on Tuesday 2 June, at 10.30 am at the Devonshire Road Community Centre.

Archery Open Day On 30th May anyone over 8 years of age can come along and have a go at shooting a few arrows for free. Harworth Archers Open day takes place at Harworth & Bircotes Sports & Social Club between 10am and 3pm. No experience is necessary and all equipment is provided. Apologies to anyone reading this after the Open Day which falls just as these magazines are due to start being distributed. Harworth Archers & Bircotes Junior Archers opened in 2011 starting with about 10 members. There are now about 30 members, and about half of those are under 18. We meet 3 times a week, Tuesdays and Thursday evenings and Saturday mornings. We offer beginners courses covering

Harworth Colliery Football Club June 2015 Update Hello and welcome all of you to what is really our end of Season Review. As ever it has been a very busy time for the club, for all our teams and we are delighted to announce that our Under 13’s finished as League Winners which is a great acheivement for all involved. As a club we are not measured in terms of Trophies but to have a team that has won the League is something we are all very proud of and with a bit of luck we could and probably should have had a bit more silverware in the cabinet

next season which we are all over the moon with. This will be managed by Mark Latham and Steve Wibberley who both know the club inside and out and if anyone is interested then please contact the club. They will play in the North Midlands Development league with some very stong teams, so will be challenging to say the least.

This takes us onto the Juniors and they have been the true highlight for us all, as mentioned above theUnder 13’s under the management of David Guy won their League on the last game of the season. It has been a real team effort and so well done to all involved. The way both our Junior sides have approached each game is a Our 1st team finished the season in 8th position after a tribute to their parents and coaches and the feedback we disappointing run of results in the last few months, but have had from referees and opposing teams is delightful this really was down to numerous injuries to key players. But 8th is a fair reflection of where we have been as whole to hear. this term. Our start and was poor but the middle part saw Graham Ellis’s under 14’s finished 3rd in the league and us go on a great run and found ourselves top in January nearly won the Under 14’s cup. Just getting to the final although we had played quite a few games more then our rivals. We got through to the final of the Floodlit Cup was a massive acheivement beating a team from the top division who was previously unbeaten gave them which if we had taken our chances we could have won and as a management group we know where we have to great hope in the final but they was defeated 2-1 by strengthen and already have plans in place for pre-season Scawthorpe. We have great hopes for4 both sides again next year; no pressure then! so we are looking to go into next year in a lot stronger position then we began this one One for the diarys - coming up is a Sportsams evening we have arranged for the 18th of July and we are proud The reserves finished mid table and semi finalists in the to announce that Howard Webb, World Cup final referee League cup. In October we were unable to fulfil a fixture will be our speaker with Gary Marshall as Compere and due to lack of players which was incredibly disapointing Comedian. Tickets are just £20 and it should be a great for me personally, but a change in management saw an upturn in results and interest in the team. Again the team evening. We hope the Village can get behind it. finished poorly and that is something as a club we need to address but the fact we turned it round from a position where we could have folded was a positive one. The Colts finished in the Top 4 and were finalists in their League Cup losing 2-1 when it could easily have been the other way round. The team hasn’t achieved what we set out to do which was to get younger players playing senior football but the team has had an excellent year and we wait to see if they will have another season or not as it is an ageing side and whether we can continue with three teams is one for discussion. Because of the situation we have found ourselves in with young players not coming through as we had hoped this has been addressed by having an Under 19’s again for 8

DO YOU KNOW WHO OWNS THIS PIECE OF LAND? WHO IS DUMPING WASTE HERE? Bassetlaw District Council is trying to find the owner of this piece of land, behind 5 Grosvenor Road, Harworth.

or removes the waste does so correctly. Always make sure that they have a Waste Carriers Licence. If they don’t or can’t show it to you, you will be liable for any fly tipped waste. A fine could come your way. You could save yourself time and MONEY.

DO YOU KNOW WHO OWNS IT? Despite our enquiries, we are unable find out who owns this strip of land. In cases like this, local knowledge can be more useful and lead us to the owners. If you know who owns it or have a suggestion, please come forward and let us know. Telephone 01909 533219 with your information or e-mail environmental.health@bassetlaw.gov.uk

If you have any information that can help us solve this flytipping problem or any other fly-tipping issues, please call Environmental Health and we will follow up all information received. All we need is the following information:-

We receive regular complaints that this piece of land is a frequent fly-tipping area. We want to inform the owner that there is a problem, and that we may install cameras in order to catch the fly-tippers.

Date and time of incident

The Council use cameras regularly to identify people who fly-tip items and we will and do take them to court or issue Fixed Penalty Notices. Fly-tipping encourages more dumping, makes the area look unsightly and it costs YOU, the Council Tax Payer a lot of money to clear it up. Recently fridges and freezers have been dumped on this land with the motors removed. If we are to take any action then we need the public’s help in identifying those responsible. Have you seen anybody dumping waste on this piece of land, or any other pieces of land? A vehicle must have been used to dispose of the waste. Did you see anything? We are also particularly interested in areas on Common Lane, Serlby Road, Snape Lane and the wooded area on Styrrup Lane. Even if you are not certain whether wrong doing was taking place, please come forward with any information and we will follow it up wherever possible.

A photograph of the incident happening is not essential, although it would help.

Where fly-tip has taken place

Make, colour and registration of vehicle Name/Description of person involved

Help us to keep Harworth & Bircotes clean and tidy and swot that Fly-tipper!

It is illegal to Fly-tip waste anywhere in Bassetlaw. All waste must be disposed of correctly. This also applies if you have paid somebody to take the waste away and they dump it illegally. YOU are responsible to ensure that whoever disposes

Building on a successful 2013 Art Take Over, Rossington based artists Caroline and Adam Ogden, in collaboration with seven artists have brought a poignant exhibition titled ‘What’s Left?’ exploring the legacy of the South Yorkshire Mining industry to South Yorkshire. The exhibition features, painting, drawing, photography and sculpture and will be available to see at the Club until 5th June. Thanks to the generosity of the Labour Club the events are free and anyone will be welcome to attend. Martin Pick comments: “It offers a real opportunity for contemporary art lovers and those with an interest in social history to meet share ideas and build creative collaborations.” The ‘What’s Left?’ exhibition includes work produced during the 1984 miners strike, work produced in the post strike period and most recently during 2013 and 2014. People effected by the strike, both old and young, have been interviewed and their comments collected and presented as unattributed “quotations” throughout the exhibition. The interviewees are ex-miners, police officers who served during the strike, miners wives, friends and family and perhaps most importantly young people who have grown up with its legacy. Participating artists who are all members of Doncaster’s New Fringe are: Steve Bates, Adam Berry, Rachel Horne, Adam Ogden, Madeline Pick, Martin Pick, Cheryll Kinsley Potter and Evan Wood. The New Fringe is an inclusive Doncaster based arts group. With 150 active members it exists to provide support and encouragement as individuals develop their talent and artistic practice. Its approach is to encourage artists to ‘do it for themselves’ with other members of the group providing support if needed. Anyone serious about the arts and developing the arts scene in Doncaster is welcome to join the New Fringe, it’s easy to do online and costs only £5 per year: http://doncasternewfringe.wordpress.com Rossington Labour Club Gattison Lane, Rossington, DN11 0NR, 01302 868491 T

community Well, Spring is here, the grass is getting greener the trees are waking and the sun is in the sky. However it is still a little cool so the heating will stay on in our kennels for the evening to keep our residents warm and cosy. The dogs and cats get quite giddy as soon as the sun appears, maybe the start of a new season to hope for their forever home!

Finding a forever home

As well as taking care of the dogs and cats we have also been busy staining benches, splitting plants and re planting, spraying and cleaning flags and generally tiding up after the dark winter months. We were hoping to rent a shop in Worksop but unfortunately it didn’t happen, but we are still looking. So if you would like to add your name to the list of volunteers that can maybe help when we eventually find a shop please let us know. It would be better to make sure we have enough volunteers to man the shop before we embarked on actually finding one. Worksop or any surrounding area would be acceptable, if anyone has an empty shop that they would like to donate to us for a short period initially please let us know We are seeing many dogs and cats coming to us from families that are going through difficult times and can no longer keep their treasured pet. Family breakups, moving into rented accommodation, financial problems, we help when we can, we are full to overflowing but sometimes we have to bend our own rules for people with genuine problems. In the office at the moment is Oscar a beautiful pointer cross and such a lovely boy but frightened of his own shadow. However when he gets to know you he is such a loving dog. As he is nervous it was decided that he should be around people more so he has been upgraded (5 star) to the office where he can have company and people around him most of the day. He is coming on in leaps and bounds. Our lovely old staff y Jess who also lived with our volunteers has at last found a home and has settled in well.

Mayflower Animal Sanctuary, Narrow Lane, Bawtry.

Tel: 01302 711330

If you would like to support us by completing a direct debit for £2 per month please call us or visit our website bank details are on there. Also a gift in your Will would mean so much to dogs and cats that may need our help and the long term future of the Sanctuary. Please call Jennie on 01302 711330 if you would like any further information on how to do this. These gifts are crucial to our long term future. We are recruiting for a Trainee Kennel Carer age 16/18 No previous experience necessary but must be prepared to work weekends. Please call our Sanctuary 01302 711330 and leave a message or come up and see us in opening hours 1-3 weekdays and 1-4 at weekends. Bring your CV and ask to speak to Jennie.

Unfortunately Little Jack the Jack Russell is still with us, it would be lovely to see him go to his forever home. We have about 8 or 9 long term residents and it is such a shame that they are still spending their days in kennels when they could be having some special time running on a beach or in a wood with new owners to take care of them. So if you are wanting a dog that is a little more mature please don’t walk past them they have a lot of love to give. If you would like to get close to any of our dogs we also have a paddock area that is ideal for just that. We also have some beautiful black kittens that are full of fun, so if you are looking for an older lap cat or a full of fun kitten please come and see us. We have also just recently taken in kittens that were found in a box under a hedge, they are just settling in at the moment and may not as yet be ready for rehoming.

me ow!

If you have any fund raising idea’s with enough bodies to carry them out please let us know. We are only a small group and need more volunteers to fund raise for us. 11th July is our Doncaster Street collection come over and say hello, this is one of our favourite days. 12th July we will be at Tithes Lane Tickhill enjoying our Scrufts Dog Show. There will be a BBQ and cake stalls etc. We will look forward to seeing all of the dogs that we have rehomed with their new owners it is a really magical day. Let’s hope the weather is good to us. We will look forward to seeing you at the Sanctuary or come and say hello on any of our fund raising events. Bye for now

TIME FOR MY FUNDRAISING MISSION TO START... As most of you will be aware I'm training to become a community first responder working alongside the ambulance service when a 999 call is made. I have always had a passion to do this but losing my beautiful friend last month has given me the inspiration and told me now is the time to follow my dreams. I will be trained in all aspects of CPR and de-fibrillation. All community first responders do this totally voluntary all equipment including defibrillators are bought with donations. I will be on call from home covering an 8 mile radius. My fantastic friends and family have agreed to raise money for this cause; Heath Wilson, Mark Pearson Panch, Ian Cook, Stuart Moden and my daughter Sapphir Knighton will be skydiving from 15,000ft on the 28th of June. If anyone would like to donate or sponsor them you can contact any of them of go to http://www.gofundme.com/sj8rt4 Everyone who makes a donation or sponsors one of the above people will be entered into a draw to win a product hamper donated by The Vanilla Rooms of Bawtry. I’m so proud of these people and the efforts people put in to help our community.... Thanks again

Arts Review

& what’s going on - JUNE 2015 HILARY

T Fest 26 September… which is a fortnight after the St Leger. Posters are now up in the local shops… and already a fantastic array of bands are booked to play, this will be a different event from the first one in 2013, it will be much more compact with only two venues in Tickhill hosting the music and many and much more besides. So put it in your diary. Become a sponsor. Snap up your early bird tickets - a snip - a ridiculous snip at £10 a pop. www.t-fest.co.uk Travellers alighting at the train station in Doncaster must be prepared for a serious feeling of disorientation. They will be forgiven for thinking that they have arrived in Manhattan… just look at what has happened at that end of the Frenchgate! Yorkshire Contemporary This is Doncaster’s newest gallery space, showing work by more than a dozen artists living in the Doncaster area, to one of the biggest audiences possible. I have always been a fan of art being in non-gallery places, and the Frenchgate thoroughfare, the route from the station into the shopping centre has to be one of these. This large space has been transformed with an initiative from the curator/ artist Neil Rands aka Rama Ramski ( showing this month in Art at the Deli) and a group of artists from the New Fringe into a lively and exciting space with bright and often large scale works. This large space has a daily audience in the thousands. So a great place for artists to hang their work. https:// yorkshirecontemporary.wordpress.com Doncaster Museum and Art Gallery Wed to Fri 10.00 – 16.30, Sat & Sun 10.30 – 4.15 Exhibition: Yorkshire Photographic Union until 5th July. Each lecture costs £5 to be paid at the museum reception and includes refreshments. Growth and Maturity Dear Friends,

On Friday 26th June we are holding a “Summer Bash 2015” in a marquee behind the Scarbrough Arms, featuring live music, good food and real ales served in a private bar. An evening for music lovers not to miss. Tickets will be available at Fenton’s Butchers, Juicy Fruits, The Carpenters Arms and The Scarbrough Arms, costing £20 with all proceeds to be donated to the Doncaster Cancer Detection Trust. Tables for 10 may be reserved through The Scarbrough Arms.

As a person who hails from a warm climate, I love the spring and summer seasons. I love it when the sun shines through my office and brings in the warmth that I had been craving for. I also love it when I can plant flowers and vegetables and see them grow in my garden. Thinking of planting and growth, I am reminded of Jesus’ words in John 12:24 which says, “Very truly, I tell you, unless a grain of wheat falls into the earth and dies, it remains just a single grain; but if it dies, it bears much fruit”. Jesus was reminding his followers that life is not always what we want. Hence, we may feel powerless and vulnerable in some of our experiences. We must realise that in most of these experiences, we cannot always control them no matter how hard we try. The seed must be broken in the soil before growth starts and finally leading to fruits. We must therefore listen to our pain and accept that life is a balance of joy and sorrows. This will help us to grow into maturity, as God wants us to. On the other hand, I wonder if I can also remind friends that accepting the challenge of growth is part of the process but living with it and moving on is sometimes very difficult. Just like a plant growing into maturity, we need to be watered, pruned and fed. These processes will eventually lead to fruiting. I wonder whether you may be encountering some struggles in your life. They could be finances, family issues, work-related issues, retirement issues, bereavement or the loss of a pet or an item, and so on. Sometimes, we cannot mend the issues but we can see the bright side of it and move on to the future. God is encouraging us to depend on him in these times of our lives. He says in Hebrews 13:5, “I will never leave you nor forsake you”. My prayer for you is that God will carry you through your season of growth and maturity so that you may come out a more matured person yielding hundreds and even thousands of fruits that will benefit those you encounter in your life.

We can be contacted through the following :

Have a blessed summer time.

Last months report highlighted the work of Lions Club International Foundation (LCIF) providing finance and practical help whenever tragedies occur around the world, and since then the reserves of cash contributed by Lions Clubs have been utilised in providing fresh water purification units to stricken areas of Nepal, almost before the dust had settled, and certainly before many countries had started to raise funding. Locally we donated £450 last month to the Phoenix Explorer Scouts towards the purchase of suitable tents and rucksacks for overnight stops during treks and challenges which form part of the qualification for Duke of Edinburgh Bronze, Silver and Gold Awards.

garden view

By Rachel Leverton

Never too late…

Gardening is an ongoing affair and though timing is important, we often become overwhelmed by a sense of being ‘too late to plant’ by some arbitrary date. Often we bandy dates around as though they were written in stone. My granddad insisted all potatoes and spring beans had to be sown by Good Friday, and the gooseberry bush had to be in leaf before the runner beans were sown. But in fact each season is different and garden planting dates are more flexible than traditional wisdom would have us believe! The good news is that it’s not too late to plant a great garden, even in June and July. While it is true that fruiting plants like tomatoes and peppers really need to be set out now, many other summer producers will grow even more quickly from seeds planted in early summer, when the soil is already well warmed. You’ll be surprised how fast seeds will come up and explode with growth: cucumbers, beans and winter squashes, pumpkins, beets, carrots, chard and scallions, are all suitable for June planting. It’s a great time to start a crop of ‘cut and come again’ salad mix and mild mustards. You can also plant heat-and-sun-loving herbs like basil, marjoram, chives, oregano, thyme and sage. Just keep the seed beds well moistened. 22

HARWORTH & BIRCOTES TODAY

And even if you were super-efficient and your earlyplanted beans, squash, chard, carrots and basil plants are growing well, June is a terrific time to start a second crop to have ready for a late summer harvest, when the first crops of these staples have finished up. I usually start seeds every month, finishing sowing summer-producing vegetables in late June. In July and August, I move on to seeds for autumn crops like spinach, radishes, kale, leeks, peas, broccoli, more mild mustards and some pak choi. June is not too late for flowers either. I’ve planted marigolds, sunflowers, cosmos, zinnias and nasturtiums at this time of year. That way when the first annuals have burned out by late summer I have a lovely smaller flush of blooms to enjoy. If you really want to get ahead, June and July are also good times to start seeds for perennials and biennials to bloom next spring. Sow seeds in a protected seed bed, and then transplant seedlings in the autumn to overwinter. Next spring you’ll be rewarded handsomely with garden full of glorious colour.

Enjoy your garden.

Quad Bikes in the area We continue to receive an increase of incidents involving quad bikes and off road bikes that are being used in and around the area. This is an on-going problem and we have been made aware that it is becoming increasingly difficult to walk through some of the wooded areas due to danger these vehicles present. Throughout January to May 2015 the Neighbourhood policing team, have seized 5 off road bikes and 3 quad bikes that were being used in the Harworth and Bircotes area. Some of these bikes seized have been examined and confirmed stolen property where enquiries are ongoing. Some of these vehicles will be destroyed as the riders had no insurance and the bikes were not road legal. Following a Police operation a quad bike and trailer were seized by officers in April both were reported to be stolen. Once again we are urging anyone who has any information as to where the quads are being stored and/or who is riding them to report this either directly to us on the non emergency 101 telephone number. Or if you prefer to report this anonymously you can ring Crimestoppers on 0800 555 111.

Burglaries and Shed Breaks in the Area Our advice remains the same in terms of burglaries and shed breaks and that is for people to remain vigilant and check that they have adequate locks on all windows and doors. Also, check

that security lights where fitted are operational. If you are due to be going away on holiday ask neighbours, family or friends to keep checking on your property and to report anything that seems suspicious to the Police. Also ensure that you check that all windows, doors and outbuildings are closed and locked securely prior leaving your property. Once again we strongly urge people to ensure that all lawnmowers and other garden equipment are stored securely inside your sheds and garages. Please also ensure that a good heavy duty lock and shed alarm are fitted to try and prevent the contents from being stolen. We continue to offer free property marking by using Cre Mark where we will come out and visibly mark property to also help deter thieves. If you would like more information on this or to arrange for one of the local PCSO’s to call round to mark your property please make contact with them on their numbers shown below.

News from the courts over the past few months 3 males from the Harworth and Bircotes area have been sentenced to various custodial sentences after being found guilty of being involved in Burglary offences in Lincolnshire. 1 male received 2 years, 1 male received 18m months, and the other male received 12 months. A male from the Harworth and Bircotes area is still remanded in custody until June 2015 to appear at Nottingham Crown Court for a trial in relation to witness intimidation and perverting the course of justice.

A Male from the Harworth and Bircotes area has been sentenced to five years in prison for Burglary in neighbouring forces. 2 Males have been charged with Witness intimidation and Section 4 public order in relation to an incident in Harworth and Bircotes in March 2015. A Female also involved in the incident has been charged with criminal damage and section 4 public order. All 3 are due to appear in court in June 2015. A female from the Bassetlaw area has received a suspended prison sentence after Nottinghamshire Police and Bassetlaw District Council teamed up to bring a successful prosecution for fraudulent benefit claims totalling £13,000. The female appeared before Mansfield Magistrates Court charged with: 1. Fraud by false representation – Fraud Act 2006 2. Make a false instrument with intent it be accepted as genuine – Forgery and Counterfeiting Act 1981. 3. Use a false instrument with intent it to be accepted as genuine – Forgery and Counterfeiting Act 1981. She was found guilty and sentenced to 26 weeks in prison, suspended for a year and was order to pay £85 costs and £80 victim surcharge. Ross Theakstone, Director of Corporate Resources at Bassetlaw District Council said “Benefit fraud is a crime and people need to appreciate that where appropriate the Police can and will get involved. I am delighted that we have been able to work with Notts Police in bringing this prosecution and this sentence sends a clear message to the public that benefit cheats will get caught”.

community Speeding Vehicles At the recent Priority Setting meeting the issue of speeding vehicles has been raised as one of the three main priorities in the area. The Neighbourhood Policing Team will be continuing to work with pupils and staff from the local schools on active speed detection in the area. The Neighbourhood policing team are arranging some more active speed detection dates with school in June 2015. The project is aimed at educating motorists however if circumstances meet the criteria prosecutions will also take place. The project has already shown benefit to the area, between January and April 2015 approximately 1600 vehicles have been monitored with around 10 warnings issued for motorists exceeding the speed limit. This equates to around 0.65% of vehicles monitored were shown speeding in the area.

Harworth & Bircotes Town Council - MAY 2015 ITS OVER! No more elections for 4 years, so life (and television programmes) can return to normal for everyone. I have to thank everyone who voted for me, Anita Smith and Dave Challinor to be your District Councillors, and all those of you who helped voluntarily with the campaign. But there have been other things to think about, too…….

trial period. IF there is enough interest and people do use this, then we would hopefully be looking at a permanent arrangement.

• Citizens Advice Bureau have visited Harworth and discussed the possibility of introducing their service, especially as we now have a video-conferencing facility – this means that you or I could talk directly to a specialist advisor in Worksop, if need ITS OVER! be. C.A.B. tell me 70% of No more elections for 4 their work is concerned with years, so life (and television benefits and welfare issues, programmes) can return to and this would be their focus normal for everyone. I have here. I understand that in to thank everyone who voted Ollerton the C.A.B. work for me, Anita Smith and Dave in partnership with local Challinor to be your District solicitors, thus a very wide Councillors, and all those of you range of issues are covered, who helped voluntarily with the and that is a model of practice campaign. But there have been I would like to see working other things to think about, here. too……. POSSIBLE DEVELOPMENTS IN HARWORTH AND BIRCOTES Over the last month I have had discussions with several organisations about a number of developments that could be of benefit to the people of Harworth and Bircotes. • A firm of solicitors are interested in offering a free, weekly advice session for a 28

• A FREE Community Minibus Service will be launched on 18th June. The wheelchair accessible bus will operate every Thursday from 10am to

2pm for a 3 month trial period. It is aimed at those who have difficulty accessing the Town facilities and the service will cover Harworth and Bircotes with the drop off/collection point at Harworth Town Hall car park. To use the service you must register as ‘Friends of Harworth and Bircotes Town Council’; you can do this by ringing 07444 538430. This is also the number to use to book your journey. If successful and it is supported by residents, the service will be extended. N.B. The minibus will not be using established bus routes, nor will it deliver you to a location other than the Town Hall – it will not be competing with established bus or taxi services. Council has worked to bring these services into the community – it’s now up to you to show your support for them if we are to keep them.

Harworth & Bircotes Town Council - CONTINUED V.E. DAY SERVICE AND CELEBRATIONS A church service was held in recognition of the end of World War Two, followed by a gathering at the cenotaph in memory of those who died in the conflict. Thanks go to Brian Letherland for his involvement and planning, and also to Roger Smith who rang the church bell 70 times. IN MEMORY OF HARWORTH COLLIERY MINERS Mr and Mrs Stanyard accompanied me on a recent visit to the stone mason who is making the memorial stone; I felt it important to involve them in the decisions for the final design because it was Mr Stanyard who originally approached Council with this proposal. The work has been on hold for some time, although we have now acquired extra funding from Harworth Estates. Another delay was Planning Permission; I never imagined we would need permission for a headstone (another lesson learned!) Now that the drawings have been passed, we wait to hear when the stone will be ready to be sited on the small piece of land between Colliery Row and Asda. Harworth Estates have provided me with a comprehensive list

of the 79 men who died as a result of working at Harworth Colliery, and the details make for very sombre reading. The time span is from 1925 to 1991, the age at death ranges from 14 to 60 years old, and the most common causes of death are roof fall, followed by crush injuries. I was shocked when I read the report; the simple statistical data it contains illustrated to me the stark reality of the dangers encountered when working underground. No wonder men didn’t want their sons to follow them ‘down the pit’. PROBLEMS • The Cemetery: The theft of small metal containers on older graves has been ongoing. The size of the containers means they are easily hidden, but if you do see anyone acting suspiciously, please report it to Council. I have to ask: how low can you get, robbing a cemetery? • Garden Ornaments are also disappearing, usually in the night; no doubt they will reappear at some car boot sale. GOOD CITIZENS AND THE FLY TIPPER: A couple noticed a man tipping rubbish over his garden fence

into a field. They approached him and asked him to stop; despite his attitude they were persistent and stuck to their guns. Council intends taking action, and thank you to these Good Citizens for caring about our environment and being willing to do something about it. TAKEAWAYS I know some people are concerned about yet more takeaways appearing, so I thought I would ask what the current planning legislation has to say. As ever, nothing is straightforward, so I have asked Beverley Alderton-Sambrook, Head of Planning at B.D.C. to visit our community this month and give Council her opinion. Beverley is very experienced and I know she will give a balanced, honest assessment. BROADBAND AND WI-FI. Although Harworth and Bircotes is already fibreenabled, as part of the Notts. County initiative in bringing faster Broadband to more rural communities, work has been completed to improve the speed in H&B – something local business especially has been asking for. To find out more, ring 01909 533444, or look at www.northnotts.net. Wi-Fi is now available at the Town Hall.

community TOWN COUNCIL BUSINESS Friday 15th May saw the retirement of Steve Bowman as Town Clerk. Steve has served this community for 6 years, during which time he has been involved in the many changes we have seen in our community. We wish him an enjoyable retirement and no doubt he will find new challenges that will keep him fully occupied. TO MAKE YOU SMILE After a somewhat intensive campaign my home is now my own again after being used for 6 weeks as the election base camp. I can visit the bathroom without locking the door, my dining room table –and chairs – are free of papers, and I can now access the study and use my computer during the day. However, during the lead up to voting day I was appalled to discover that a local ‘agitator’ was telling people that I was under Police protection, which was news to me - and to the Police! And no, you won’t see me driving around in my car with my Mother riding shotgun!
