Hello from Mayflower Sanctuary, we hope you are all enjoying the holiday break and taking your much loved dogs for long walks on the beach. We have had some beautiful sunny days and hope everyone is remembering not to leave dogs and cats in hot cars, its surprising how hot a car can get in 10 minutes.

In the Sanctuary at the moment we have a really pretty German Shepherd his name is Theo he is really stressed in kennels and needs a foster home urgently. It would be ideal if you had experience with this breed, however even if you haven’t come along and speak to us anyway.

Flynn and Bailey are two lovable little dogs that can do no wrong. Bailey has an undershot jaw and is so funny and cute a really adorable puppy we think he is about 4/5 months old and both came from Cyprus for a better life. The situation there is really horrible for some dogs and cats, so we like to help when we can. Flynn is a bit of an escape artist again really cute with one ear up and one down. Both are small dogs with beautiful temperaments. These dogs are both in foster at the moment and have fit in really well with other dogs in the household. But permanent home are required.

Molly is a pretty little girl that came from Romania she was a street dog, bless her she has at some point broken her foot and it has healed in a strange way, obviously she wasn’t in a position to have a vet present ! Poor little thing is frightened of everything so she will need a lot of love and patience to make her into a sociable little dog. With the right home and loving people i am sure she will shine.

Would you believe there has been 2 cases of kittens dumped over the last few weeks. One was in a box in a wood

Finding a forever home and another was left at our gates.

We didn’t have any room however our cattery manager Penny has taken them home and they are all doing well.

Realistically they were left where they could be found. But really that isn’t the point. If people don’t want their cats to have kittens there is financial help from various organisations including cat protection also some vets carry out neutering schemes. So check it out before your cat is pregnant again.

We have for sale a lovely Poetry Book it’s called Poetry Book For Little Paws, printed

by AKS Print & Design. Members of the public contributed to the poetry book including Lisa Turner and Helen Slater.

Why, Why, Why Delilah?? I loved my Dad and I loved my home. Its not my fault that he couldn’t breathe !!!! ………………………………….

Delilah has had to come into care because her owner was allergic to her. Medication wasn’t helping and his asthma was getting really bad.

She is a lovable little girl but is a little confused by the situation that she finds herself in at the minute.

Once she gets to know you, her true personality will come shining through and you will be rewarded with purrs, head-bumps and the loudest meow in the Cattery.

Life Saver Tesco bring us a home delivery of dog and cat food every week which is amazing so many thanks.

Has anyone got a few spare hours to spare, we need a gardener/handyman.

There is also may be an opening for a live in Caretaker. Please call the Sanctuary and ask for Jennie regarding either of these roles 01302 711330 - leave a message if it is answer phone.

Last but not least we have another wish list if anyone would like to pick anything up when they do their weekly shop there is a list below.

Good with cats: Pepper Lived with children: Yes Candy and her sister, Pepper, came into care when their owner became ill and was unable to care for them anymore. Unable to be returned to the Rescue that they were adopted from, these stunning girls were homeless until Mayflower stepped in.

Both girls are extremely sociable although Candy is usually the one that makes the first move.

A home together is essential for this pair as they’re very close and Pepper relies heavily on her sister.

With the start of the Autumn term comes our busiest time of the year, all our classes will be starting new sessions and this is an excellent time to enrol and learn something new. Be it an IT, Computer or tablet class, a new exercise class or maybe an art or antiques workshop; I feel sure you will find something to interest you in our timetable. Of particular interest is our New Rock Project , which offers the opportunity for 7-18 year olds to get involve in creating music, be it Singing, Guitar, Bass or drum lessons; and get involved in playing in a band, this is a very exciting project.

Shona will be expanding her very popular range of Yoga classes to include an additional evening to cater for those of you who cannot make her daytime classes, and Judith will start a new term of Baby bright sparks for preschool children. There will also be a new term of Bullseye dog training; we aim to offer something for every member of the family even your pets.

If its exercise you are after we have 3 Zumba classes, a fitness and diet class (and weight watchers), tae kwon do, adult ballet, Childrens dance classes and a gentle exercise class for those of us for whom childhood is a distant memory. There are always new classes becoming available so please pop in and discuss your need I sure we will be able to help.

Rosemary Shrager added to Clumber Park’s Festival of Food and Drink menu.

Top chef and cookery teacher Rosemary Shrager is the latest celebrity chef to be added to the delicious Cookery Theatre menu at this year’s Festival of Food and Drink, held at Clumber Park on Saturday 17th and Sunday 18th September 2016.

Reunited with her ITV Chopping Block onscreen partner John Whaite, Rosemary will be appearing on Sunday 18th September, with a demonstration in the Cookery Theatre, a VIP meet and greet, and book signing.

Rosemary endeared herself to the nation when she took part in ‘I’m a Celebrity, Get Me Out Of Here’ where she proved she could cook just about anything, anywhere.

She is best known for appearing on many TV cookery programmes including; ‘Ladette to Lady’, ‘Rosemary Shrager’s School for Cooks’, ‘This Morning’, ‘The Alan Titchmarsh Show’ and more recently, The Real Marigold Hotel and The Chopping Block.

community Recipe Zuvu Salmon & Leek Parcels

method

(serves 2) 1

ingredients 250g leek (about 3 small ones) thinly sliced 85g

mascarpone

1tbsp chopped dill, plus 1 tsp 2

skinless salmon fillets

½

lemon, grated zest of ¼ plus a good squeeze of juice

2-3tsp capers Baby potatoes and wilted spinach to serve (optional)

Heat oven to 200C/180C fan/ gas 6. Place two sheets of baking parchment (large enough to wrap up each salmon fillet) on your work surface.

Put the leeks in a pan with 6tbsp water, cover and bring to the boil. Cook for 5 mins until the water has been absorbed and the leeks almost tender.

Stir in mascarpone, 1 tbsp dill and some seasoning.

Spoon half the creamy leeks into the middle of one sheet of parchment and place a salmon fillet on top, then repeat to make a second parcel.

Sprinkle over the lemon zest with a squeeze of juice, then scatter over the capers and the remaining 1 tsp dill.

Bring the parchment up over the fish and join the two edges together by folding them over several times down the middle.

Do the same with the ends and place the parcels, spaced apart on a baking sheet.

Bake for 12-15mins, depending on how well done you like your fish, then carefully tear open the parcel. Serve with lemon wedges for squeezing over, baby potatoes and wilted spinach or your choice of accompaniments.
