From the Artistic Director, Rick Fortney -- Welcome to The Odd Couple! -Neil Simon is a favorite, and I am so pleased to host his work again on the TrueNorth stage as we celebrate The Odd Couple’s 50th anniversary. The Odd Couple premiered on the Broadway Stage in 1965 with Art Carney and Walter Matthau, then became a film with Walter Matthau and Jack Lemmon, and then the wonderful TV sitcom with Tony Randall and Jack Klugman. It was our director’s goal to not mimic any of the above but develop the wonderful words and writing of Neil Simon and make it our own. This piece is about relationships, one that each of us can connect and relate to. It’s filled with emotion, but within filled with comedy. I am excited for us to bring this great piece to life. My thanks to our director Greg Violand! It’s wonderful having him back as he has directed Miracle on 34th Street and The Secret Garden in past seasons at TrueNorth. Thanks is also extended to our Production Team, Crew, Staff and our Actors … I have enjoyed the poker games, the bologna sandwiches, and even the linguine! We are in rehearsals for The Three Little Wolves and the Big Bad Pig (2.5-14) in the Family Life Theatre and Godspell to be performed on this very stage (2.26-3.13). Our Chorale will be performing The Holocaust Cantata: Songs from the Camps on The International Day of Peace, A Day of Remembrance, Wednesday, January 27th. This powerful piece is a beautiful work by Donald McCullough and features the Chorale, and solo cello. Also on the concert will be works by Bartok for trumpet and piano. Our Big Band will be in concert for the inaugural event of The Emerald Event Center, the last Sunday of January. Come ready to eat, hear

Director’s Note

T

he Odd Couple; The first thing I told the cast when we gathered was…”this is not the TV Sitcom, don’t try to imitate what they did!” This piece is funny but poignant. Neil Simon wrote to tell a story in a unique and funny way and of course we laugh at the foibles and misfortune of the people who could and in some cases are ourselves. Comedy is funniest when it hits close to home. Each character has their own peccadillos, Speed with his impatience, Vinnie with his subservience, Murray with his methodicalness, Roy with his breathing compulsion, the pigeon sisters with their quirkiness and of course Felix with his obsessive compulsive neurosis and Oscar’s sloppiness. But the bottom line of Neil Simon’s story as with all good storytelling is in telling the truth. If the actors tell the truth then the story will be clear and the laughs will come where they will. “Don’t try to be somebody, be yourselves, tell the story, the truth will out and the laughs will come” This is I think what makes Mr. Simon’s writing stand the test of time. It ain’t Shakespear but it does hit close to home and as we laugh at Felix and Oscar we can chuckle a little at ourselves.

-Greg Violand, Director
