From the Artistic Director, Rick Fortney -- Welcome to Next To Normal! --

This has been a special couple of months here at TrueNorth. In April we presented Falling written by Deanna Jent. Falling is about how a family lives, suffers and loves when affected by autism. The blue lights illuminating our front courtyard are in honor of Autism Awareness Month, and even though April has come and gone, we continue to celebrate and grow from what Falling taught us. May is Mental Health Awareness Month, and in recognition we present Next to Normal. This is a powerful musical – one I have grown to love. Tonight you may feel uneasy. You will hear strong language and sexual overtones. You will witness recreational and prescription drug use. You will see controversial psycho-pharmacological treatment. As uncomfortable as the subject matter of this show may be, I hope you will open your minds and hearts to the Goodman Family, and challenge yourself to reconsider how to love, care for, and accept those struggling in our lives. I also hope we cultivate mental health awareness and the resources available to help those in need. I would like to thank The Nord Center, NAMI, The Lorain County Board of Mental Health, Firelands Counseling & Recovery Services and Bellefaire JCB for assisting us with the post-show talkbacks; please join us immediately following the performance to continue the conversation.

From the Artistic Director, Rick Fortney This summer we will be tremendously busy! Theatre Camps run June 13th through August 16th, registration is currently taking place. We are proud to be presenting the Family Life Series Production of Really Rosie next month, South Pacific on our Mainstage in July, and Bye Bye Birdie performed by the students of our Center Stage Summer Theatre Camp in August. Additionally, the TrueNorth Chorale and Chamber Orchestra will be performing Disney’s greatest hits on June 12th, their annual Patriotic Concerts on June 25th & 30th, and the TrueNorth Big Band will perform on August 14th as part of the Music Under the Stars Concert Series at Lakeview Park. Needless to say, an exciting summer lies ahead. We hope you join us throughout. Please refer to this playbill and TNCArts.org for more information. I hope you will be our guest again and again as together we celebrate the arts throughout Northeast Ohio. Enjoy the show!

Rick Fortney, Artistic Director, TrueNorth Theatre / French Creek Nature and Arts Center

My thanks to our director Fred Sternfeld, music director Anthony Trifiletti, stage manager Julie Billinghurst and the entire Production Team, crew and staff. This has been a labor of love; please know how much I appreciate each of you. We are blessed and humbled by the great team of directors and designers here at TrueNorth. To our cast … thank you! The process of learning the music and lines is one thing, but the journey of identifying, understanding and becoming these characters is yet another. I am so proud of each of you: congratulations and thanks. Many of you will recognize actors from previous TrueNorth productions, but we also welcome Justin and Robert, both making their TrueNorth debuts.
