From the Artistic Director, Rick Fortney -- Welcome to Falling! --

Thank you for joining us this weekend as we recognize and honor those with autism. I included Falling in the Family Life Series because it is about family, and I believe it’s important for audiences to discuss difficult subjects and experience journeys and relationships outside of their own. Sometimes the Family Life Series is stereotyped as strictly for preschoolers. These past two seasons, however, I have included works that stretch beyond children’s theatre, works for youth and adults, as they are part of the family structure as well. Falling is a play filled with love; it is a journey of hope. It is my wish that by experiencing Falling, conversations will continue long after the play is over. I hope as a community we will be less judgmental when we witness others whose actions we do not understand. I hope we will be more loving of all families who need the extra support because of their struggles. I hope we can identify resources throughout the area that provide expertise and support for autism. I hope all of us become more aware. Walking into our theatre today you may have noticed the blue light display we have illuminating our building and courtyard. Light It Up Blue is an international event aimed at spreading awareness and honoring the unique talents of those with autism. While April 2nd is the official date recognized the world over for lighting up landmarks blue, TrueNorth is proud to be celebrating Light It Up Blue for the entire month. Outside in the lobby we have students from Lorain County JVS selling autism awareness bracelets. All proceeds go to the Children’s Developmental Center in Amherst. The Children’s Developmental Center has been providing therapy services to special needs children, including children with autism, and their families since 1954. The Center is the only facility in Lorain County dedicated to serving only children. The Center provides speech and language therapy, as well as physical and occupational therapy and psychological counseling to children and families affected by autism and other developmental disorders and delays. The Center also provides a variety of summer camps and programs for children that build social and communication skills, as well as sensory-motor and cognitive skills. Developing these skills helps to boost confidence and self-esteem in children, and provides them with profound skills for day to day life. Falling continues through April 24th (Fridays & Saturdays @ 7:00pm and Sundays @ 3:00pm). You are our voice in the community; please encourage others to come to one of our upcoming performances of Falling.

From the Artistic Director, Rick Fortney I would like to thank this tremendous cast led by our director Melissa Crum. Melissa is new to TrueNorth. She is a colleague of Brian McNally, our Youth Outreach Coordinator and Lorain County Metro Park’s Cultural Arts Programmer. I am so thankful that Brian has introduced Melissa to TrueNorth and hope she will be part of our team for years to come! I would also like to thank Théodore Pavlich, our stage manager, and the entire Production Team and Staff. This piece has surely been a gift of love, thanks to all. The Print on Canvas, in the Martin’s Dining Room, is from our TrueNorth Gallery; Artist Lora Mosier, it is entitled On the Edge. After our production it goes back into the Gallery for sale … if interested, please see me! Next month we focus on mental illness with Next to Normal (May 6th - May 22nd). Emotionally charged and unabashed, this 2010 Pulitzer Prize winner for Drama will once again leave audiences breathless. Diana, her husband Dan and their two children enjoy the idyllic, suburban lifestyle despite one major problem: Diana’s manic depression. When their ordinary, day to day routine comes crashing down due to Diana’s unpredictable mood swings, they embark on a journey to keep their intertwined lives from careening off and apart forever. Injected with a rocking score and complex characters, this unflinching musical will resonate with anyone who’s ever dealt with mental illness. Switching gears, our TrueNorth Big Band is being featured twice in the coming weeks. On Sunday, May 1st at 3:00pm, we will be performing Sinatra at the Sands at the new Emerald Event Center in Avon. On Sunday, May 8th we will once again be at The Emerald for our Big Band Mother’s Day Brunch, 11:00am – 2:00pm. All additional information can be found at www.TNCArts.org. Thank you for coming to our performance, and thank you for your ongoing support of the arts. I hope you will be our guest again and again, through education and performance, as together we celebrate the arts.

Rick Fortney, Artistic Director, TrueNorth Theatre / French Creek Nature and Arts Center

Director’s Note

P

laywright Deanna Jent has been quoted saying this play revolves around the central question “How do you love someone who is difficult to love?” In this play we are looking at one families journey to answer that question. Much of this play exists through the tension of trying to find a solution to a seemingly impossible situation. No one is right, and no one is wrong. It is in within the walls of this very real tension that we are able to explore the complexities of this family’s reality. On the verge of everything falling apart this family struggles with finding strength, having hope, and keeping faith. It examines what it takes to find the courage to actively embrace your own personal truth and in doing so grow and change in unimaginable ways.

-Melissa Crum, Director
