Strawberry Fields at Owego VFW During Strawberry Festival - June 17 Veterans of Foreign Wars Auxiliary Post 1371, 207 Main Street in Owego, will sponsor a Craft/Vendor Fair during the Strawberry Festival on June 17 from 9:00 am to 4:00 pm. This will include a variety of shopping and food all located inside. Both the front porch and side doors will be open for this event. Proceeds will benefit some of the many programs that the Auxiliary supports including the VFW National Home for Children where the families left behind by war can remain together, and The Cancer Program that provides grants to Auxiliary members afflicted by
this dreaded disease. Also included are the USO, Wounded Warriors, Paralyzed and Homeless Veterans, Scholarships, Americanism, Legislation and Hospital/ Nursing Home Support. Veterans of Foreign Wars Comrades will have items for sale to benefit their building fund. Eligible men and women are invited to join the Auxiliary to assist in helping as we strive to serve our Veterans of today and yesterday. Information on how you can sign up with this great organization will be available.
Free Ice Cream Social - June 22 June 22 is officially the first day of summer and a great opportunity to enjoy ice cream and each other’s company. Everyone is invited to a free ice cream social on Thursday, June 22, at 6:30 pm, Owego Free Academy YES LEADer Grace Oddo (center) helps the students with the Who to Believe activity, which demonstrates the influence that peer pressure can have on the decisions we make. Fourteen YES LEADers from Owego Free Academy last month presented a program on the dangers of drugs and alcohol to Owego Elementary School and Owego Apalachin Middle School students. YES LEADS is a peer-to-peer substance abuse prevention program run by YES Safe Choices, sponsored by Senator Akshar and Lourdes Hospital. YES trains high school and middle school LEADers, like those from Owego, to stand out as role models for younger students. Earlier this year, YES LEADers attended two days of leadership training where they learned effective methods to engage younger students in relatable ways. Since many YES LEADers are leaders in their schools and local communities, younger students see them as
role models and emulate the positive choices these students make to be drug and alcohol free. At their presentations, YES LEADers demonstrate the dangers of drugs and alcohol and the importance of positive self-esteem by using hands-on activities to help younger students understand the impact the decisions they’ve made can have on everyday life. These activities are designed to teach students important skills to resist peer pressure and make safe choices. Owego’s YES LEADers are also committed to helping their community. In addition to visiting classrooms, they participate in a variety of outreach activities, including hosting a Free Family Movie Night in the spring.
