LIFELINE

“We thank you, heroic mothers, for your invincible love! We thank you for your intrepid trust in God and in his love. We thank you for the sacrifice of your life” (EV 86).

Dear Friends!

Today's readings urge us to discern carefully about the things which we falsely assume that they bring about long-lasting security and happiness. In the first reading, the author of Qoheleth who is often called a sceptic or a hedonist or a depressed melancholic declares that everything is vanity. The readers are exhorted not to accept anything as permanent or a sure path to success since everything will come to an end. In the second reading, Paul invites the Colossians to give up the things of the earth and to think about the things that are of above, i.e., heavenly blessings. The believers are called to stay away from their former life of vanity and sinfulness and to appreciate their new identity as the citizens of the heavenly kingdom. In the Gospel, through the parable of the rich fool, Jesus warns his followers against the danger of relying on earthly possessions for lasting happiness. They lead to godlessness where wealth becomes the alter of devotion of the love of God and of neighbor. May this Sunday help us to put our gifts and resources at the service of God and one another.

~ Father Augustine
