60TH OPENING DAY Owego Little League opens its 60th season on Saturday, May 7. Twenty-five teams will march at 8:30 a.m. from the Police Station to Hyde Park. Players will thank waiting motorists by a tip of the hat. Opening Ceremonies 9 a.m. on Nick Raftis Memorial Field. Ceremonial first pitches to open Tee Ball, Little League American, Modified and National Baseball and ASA Girls Softball. Games on five diamonds at 10:30 a.m., 1 p.m. and 3 p.m. OLL President Ken Winters says former players, sponsors and supporters may march or view the parade. At Hyde Park watch a game and when thirsty or hungry stop by the concession stand. Owego Elementary School Second Grade students will sing “Take Me Out to the Ball Game” and Fourth Grade Students will sing the National Anthem. They’re directed by OES Second Grade Teacher Suzanne Peacock. Owego Elks Exalted Ruler Harry Rogers presents a new American Flag to fly 24/7 and the VFW Post 1371 and Vietnam Veterans of America Veterans will raise the flag. President Winters welcomes all at the ball park and introduces his volunteer staff and directors. Special Appreciation and Dick Horton “I Do it for the Kids” awards will be given out. CALL FOR VOLUNTEERS President Winters reminds the OLL Family to volunteer. Key positions to be filled are Webmaster, Concession Stand Manager and Owego Invitational Tournament Director. New volunteers to the 2011 staff: Ed Walter as Game Scheduler…Chris Rieg as Deputy VP Baseball…Brandy Beach as Secretary and Uniform Manager… Andy Hafer as Assistant Equipment Manager. Share your talent and skills in other volunteer tasks such as umpire, uniforms, equipment, concessions, manager, coach, field parent, information parent, safety parent, scorekeeper parent, team parent and uniform parent and . other talent and skills to share. They were selected for induction into Owego Free Academy’s Wall of Fame. Both are OFA Class of 1973 graduates. Both are 30-plus years OLL volunteers The 2011 Class of five OFA Wall of Fame inductees will be honored at a dinner Wednesday, June 1, at the OFA Cafeteria. Others inductees include WWII US Navy Captain Robert R.V. Bassett Jr., Thomas Doty Sr. and Dr. John B. Shafer. Winters is an eight time president of OLL – 1998-2000 and 2006 to now – as well as Hyde Park Building and Grounds Manager, active manager and umpire. Franz is a former player, long time volunteer umpire, director, and pro bono attorney for OLL. Dad Dick Franz is a Wall of Fame member. YOUR IDEAS OLL welcomes your ideas to use during the 60th Anniversary Season. 60-YEAR HISTORY Write-ups (especially from the last 10 years) are encouraged from former players, managers, coaches and volunteer families for the 60-year OLL History. Email your “In Your Own Words” reports to jraftis2@stny.rr.com. What’s most important right now for the 60-year history. - Names of former players who currently are on duty or are veterans of Afghanistan, Iraq or Desert Storm so they can be honored and thanked. - Contact with former presidents or their families to obtain significant highlights of each year. Develop list of officers, directors, and staff by year. Write up of United Way, Fannie C. Hyde Charitable Estate, Mildred Faulkner Truman Foundation, John Cooper Family Foundation and all those who graciously donate their professional talent and services to OLL. Compile List of Team and Billboard Sponsors by year. - History. Add to Steve Lawrence’s history of Owego Girls Softball. Volunteer to develop a history of Tee Ball, Owego Invitational Baseball Tournament and Williamsport Little League Tournament teams. - Write-up recipients of the “Dick Horton I Did It For the Kids Award” started in 2003. List Concession Stand Managers, Assistants, long time Concession Stand volunteers, Volunteer Umpires and Umpires in Chief. - You may write “Afterthoughts” to cover items missed in the first 50 years.
