AGRICULTURE / HORTICULTURE Rural Studies is an introduction to agriculture, horticulture and things rural in general. During the school year, a range of units are covered from Agriculture and Horticulture. Some of the activities carried out include: Horticulture: Growing plants, garden design, plant propagation, beekeeping, forestry, hydroponics and environmental impact.

Agriculture: Different farming systems, agrodome visit, sheep farming, possums, small/exotic farming types, dairy farming, fencing, safety and environmental impact.

The emphasis of this course is practical experience so is a good lead-in to Year 11 Agriculture which is a Unit Standard based course for those with a genuine interest in a career in agriculture.

ART Where your creativity grows! ‌ an exciting full year course in a specialist Art room, with special materials, acquiring and extending techniques, thinking, & creating in a relaxed, social and inspiring environment.

During this full year course you will: -

extend your drawing skills using shadow, tone and mixed media

experience a range of art making techniques including printing, sculpture, photography and design.

BUSINESS STUDIES The Year 10 Business Studies course gives the students an introduction to accounting for a small business, being enterprising, running a small business and managing personal finances. This is a hands-on, skills based course where students learn through personal experience.

Term 1: Accounting for a Small Business Accounting is the study of gathering and reporting on financial information. During Term 1 students will examine the basic ideas of accounting for a small business.

They will learn about the different components of the accounting equation (assets, liabilities, income, expenses and equity). They will learn to use these to produce Income Statements and Balance Sheets for a small business.

Term 2: Being Enterprising Enterprising skills are those skills revolving around the creation of a business. In Term 2 students learn the process of taking an idea from development stage through to production and sale of a finished product. They learn to recognise risk and methods of dealing with risk. They learn the importance of organisational skills, independent and cooperative learning.

Term 3: Running a Small Business In Term 3 students get the opportunity to put into practice the skills and knowledge learned in Term 2. Students form small “companies” in which they set up and run their own small business. This involves developing and marketing a product, market research and advertising. This year there is an emphasis on production so all companies are expected to make their own physical product to a marketable level.

Note: Students will be expected to provide a small amount of capital to purchase the resources needed to make their initial product for sale.

Term 4: Managing Your Personal Finances In Term 4 students will look at the different forms of income they can earn, reasons why some jobs pay more than others and current rates of pay for different jobs. They will also look at different ways of using their money – spending, saving and investing.

Finally, they will look at the benefits and costs of buying on credit and borrowing. By the end of the term students should have a good understanding of how they can best manage their personal finances.

Design and Visual Communication (DVC) Description In Year 10 Design and Visual Communication you will explore concept design and gain knowledge in spatial design, product design and graphic design.

You will complete four Projects throughout the Year. Movie Marketing Design Campaign, Set Design for NZ Music Awards, Designing a Sleepout and Designing and Making a Bluetooth Speaker.

Units of work will be undertaken that have emphasis on particular skills such as:       

Design Process Technical Drawing Model Making using traditional methods and 3D Printer Advertising, Packaging and Development (Using Photoshop) Architectural Design Product Design Introduction to Sketch Up and Archicad (Computer Aided Drawing)

Assessment will be evenly spread and project folders, models, and class work will be used to determine report grades.

Commitment to work consistently and have the necessary drawing and sketching equipment is provided. This subject continues to Year 13. Students who have not had previous experience may select this option however should talk to the DVC teacher prior to subject selection.

Subject Fees: A PVC A3 folder to hold work is essential. This can be purchased from school for $12.

DRAMA Drama studied at Year 10 is a continuation and extension of the introductory course compulsory in Year 9. Students will further develop their performance skills as well as learn about Dramatic Theory central to all styles of performance. The year concludes with a class production performed for the public.

The topics covered include: - Theatre Sports - Solo Performance - Devising Drama - Greek Theatre and Mask Making - Performance for live audience The emphasis of this course is developing confidence and practical experience through performance. It leads on to further study of Drama at NCEA levels 1, 2 and 3.

FASHION AND DESIGN This full year course is designed to develop students practical and literacy skills in preparation for the Level 1 NCEA Fashion and Design Technology course.

The units covered include:     

The effect of colour and design on shape.

Fabric Knowledge and Know how Sewing skills and garment construction (2 garments) Something new from something old. (Recycling) Interior design/ gift making

Students must be prepared to organise materials for projects.

FOOD TECHNOLOGY This subject, at Year 10, continues to develop the content covered in the 10 week Year 9 course. The units of work covered are:    

Kiwi Kai Eat Wisely Making Good Choices Why is that in my Food?

Students will have one period practical each week and two theory periods Subject Fees: - $70.00. Students will also be occasionally required to bring some ingredients for practical classes, such as meat, from home.

FRENCH French studied at Year 10, carries on the communicative approach begun in Year 9. Students continue to develop their listening, speaking, reading and writing skills while studying a variety of themes, which for Year 10 include:    

Going shopping Eating at home Life at college Finding your way around town

Year 10 French is a full-year course with three periods per cycle, and lessons include role-plays, computer-assisted learning and information on French Life and Customs.

INFORMATION & DIGITAL TECHNOLOGY In Year 10 students focus on three areas, Computer science, Technology and Information Management.

Students cover some of the more popular programmes in Microsoft Office 2016 as well as web site creation and basic HTML, Programming, Robotics, Design and Electronics.

This course leads students to take up either Digital Computer Science or Digital Computing Practical. Many students choose both these subjects to study at Year 11.

It is ideal that students wishing to take either or both courses in Year 11 should have successfully completed either 9DT or 10IDT. Subject Fees: - Nil

LEARNING SUPPORT Support is offered to Year 9-10 students who are struggling in the area of Literacy. The intention is to develop student confidence and engagement in their curriculum subjects and to improve reading and reading comprehension levels. This is managed through a direct focus on strengthening and extending students’ current literacy levels.

Student progress is monitored through quality standardised assessments and with referrals made to specialists where required.

Open communication is seen as an integral part of supporting students’ learning with parents welcomed and encouraged.

MAORI This second year course is a continuation of the previous year's course along lines of language, traditions and customs. An awareness of things Maori is expected. The course will build on the concepts and skills developed in Year 9 Maori.

The aims of this course are: to enable students to understand and acknowledge Tikanga Maori  to enable students to grow in their ability to understand and speak Maori  to provide opportunities to read and write Maori Our Language is about our lives and students will learn Maori in a communicative way – to exchange real information for authentic reasons.

Learning is assisted by use of videos, CD Roms, and the opportunity to produce art and crafts to support Tikanga Maori.

TIKANGA MAORI This Tikanga course can be described as general behaviour guidelines for daily life and interaction in Māori culture. Tikanga is commonly based on experience, learning handed down through generations and is based on logic and common sense associated with a Māori world view. Learning about tikanga will enrich your experiences with the culture and improve your ability to participate fully. We will be actively involved in excursions that include our community ie, marae, rest homes, animal shelters, environment etc that highlight tikanga concepts. This will strengthen our understanding of tikanga, the importance of our role and relationships with each other within society.

These are the topics for the year that include various aspects of tikanga Māori.  Whanaungatanga/Tuakana Teina – importance of relationships  Manaakitanga/Kaitiakitanga – Guardianship/Self care and for others  Rangatiratanga – self governance (discipline/control)  Wairua/Mauri/Kotahitanga – Spiritual well being and oneness  Whakapapa – Role and importance of geneology  Atuatanga – understanding the roles of the gods in our

Metal Technology This option suits those students who wish to carry on with Engineering at Level 1 and 2. This is a practical project based course where students make projects that give them as wide an experience base as possible.

Some of the skill areas included are sand moulding and casting of aluminium, lathe work and the use of other machine tools, welding and fabrication, accurate fitting of parts, and hand tools. This work will all be assessed and used as the basis for report grades and comments.

Students will be required to pay for all materials used in the construction of their projects before practical work commences.

Subject Fees: An initial charge of $25 will be made for materials.

Music Course Objectives The Year 10 Music course is constructed as a continuation of Year 9 Music and focuses on further developing creativity, instrumental skills and techniques on students respective instrument, performance ability, aural perception, compositional skills and musical literacy through performing and studying a vast range of musical styles. The course continues to foster confidence and self-efficacy as students participate and contribute in a safe and enjoyable atmosphere.

Students can choose this option as well as Performance Music.

Course Overview This course is designed specifically for those students who may be thinking about pursuing music as a pathway through into NCEA Music. Students will have the opportunity to perform pieces of music, as soloists and in groups. Computer software will be used to compose music. To complement their practical work students will continue to gain background knowledge of musical styles as well as develop aural skills and further understanding of theoretical concepts.

The course content will include:  Performance  Theory and Aural Training  Composition (e.g. Song Writing; Instrumental Writing)  Study of Musical Styles and Works (e.g. Film Music; Music in Popular Culture; Traditional Western Music; Non-Western Music; Blues and Jazz Music; Musical Inquire; Careers in Music….)

Pre-requisite It is preferable for students to have completed the Year 9 Music course. Students who are intending to take this course are expected to have previous tuition and a basic level of skill on their chosen instrument. Students who enrol in Music are expected to participate fully in musical activities offered at Matamata College (e.g. the School Production; Talent Quest; Showcase; Choirs; Orchestras; Concert Band; Rock Bands; Jazz Band…). Students in this course must receive musical tuition in their chosen instrument (this includes voice), either privately or through the itinerant lessons offered at Matamata College. Students must have their own or be able to hire their performance instrument.

PERFORMANCE MUSIC Course Objectives

The year 10 Performance Music course is constructed as a continuation of Year 9 Performance Music and focuses on further developing instrumental skills and techniques, on student’s respective instrument through performing a vast range of musical styles as soloists and as a member of a group. The course also fosters confidence and self-efficacy as students participate and contribute in a safe and enjoyable atmosphere.

Students can choose this option as well as Music.

Course Overview

Students will have the opportunity to perform pieces of music as soloists and in groups, in front of an audience. To complement their practical work students will gain an understanding of the background and performance styles that are appropriate to the pieces they are performing as they also further their reading and aural skills.

Students will have the opportunity to perform as a member of one of the following groups:   

Vocal group Instrumental Ensemble/s (Orchestra; Concert Band; Jazz Band etc. depending on the makeup of the class Drum Line

Pre-requisite It is preferable for students to have completed Year 9 Music or Performance Music course. Students who are intending to take this course are expected to have previous tuition and a basic level of skill on their chosen instrument.

Physical Education Physical Education is a course which has been developed to introduce students to topics based around physical activity, the science of movement and leadership. It is a course which is made up of both theory and practical lessons. The majority of theory is taught in a practical setting.

Focus is also placed on participation and leadership. Students are expected to conduct themselves as leaders around the school.

This course will enhance a students’ understanding of:         

Team Sports Individual Sports Circus Arts – Skill Learning Sports Psychology Methods of Training Leadership Anatomy – the body and how it works Basic Biomechanics Sport in Society

This course is suitable for students who are interested in physical activity and for those who may like to study Physical Education in senior school.

WOOD TECHNOLOGY This subject is a full year course. Previous experience at Year 9 is desirable for students who choose this option.

The course consists of three parts.

Design:

Students plan their projects within set guidelines.

Assistance is given by the teacher. Students will have the opportunity to make a security box, cabinet and use the wood lathe.

Technological Studies: Students must find information relevant to the project being constructed. The focus is on materials, tools, processes and environmental considerations. A wider, more general field of study is also covered in lessons and demonstrations by staff.

Practical:

Most time is spent in this area. Students should build on the skills and processes used in Year 9

Subject Fees: Dependent on projects undertaken. Starter materials $30.

All materials must be paid for by students. Payment must be made before the project is started. Experience in three Year 11 Furniture Industry Unit Standards will be part of the Year 10 course of study.

This course leads on to Year 11 to Year 13 Unit Standard Courses in Furniture and Building.
