1 Thank you to the many parents and whanau who attended the recent Student Achievement and Subject Specific Parent Teacher Nights. Communication about student achievement has improved considerably through use of technology, emails and the Parent Portal and our teachers really enjoyed the opportunity to talk with you face to face. With just eight weeks to go for senior students sitting NCEA qualifications, the next two months are crucial. If you were unable to attend the above meetings and have some concerns, it is not too late to make contact with either Deans and/or subject teachers. My thanks to our Careers Staff Mrs Hancock and Gateway Co-ordinator, Ms Bolton - Hampton for their efforts in co-ordinating the highly successful Pathways Careers evening last Thursday. This was a tremendous event with around fifty external providers on site for students and their whanau, to touch base with and explore options and pathways beyond school. To over-see this is no small feat and once again our Careers staff have gone above and beyond to provide opportunities for our students. Disappointingly attendance was slightly

down on previous years but those who did attend certainly could not be disappointed. As part of our ongoing curriculum review we have decided to make a change to our Year 10 Option Structure for 2019 with the introduction of half year options. This year’s Year 9 students will now have greater flexibility and be able to keep their subject pathways open by being able to take between five and six half year subjects next year. The purpose of this is to allow students greater choice and try other subjects out before they become more specialised in the senior school. Please see the new Year 10 option subject selection guidelines below. Although it may seem complicated please note that this week the Year 9 students will be guided through the process and given information about the subjects at an assembly slot this Thursday. I hope you enjoy reading this newsletter which highlights some of the many positive things happening in our school. Of particular significance is the efforts of our amazing Head Students who completed their fundraising 172km Coast to Coast Cycle. Please see the article about this on page 3.

28 August 2018 AMAZING ART

Reid & Harrison Art Awards With the help and support of Kodak and Black, the annual Reid and Harrison Art Awards were held in Matamata and will be on display to the public until Thursday 30th August. I would like to acknowledge the crowd of friends and family that took the time to support the students on the night and were there to see the winners announced. There was a record fifty pieces entered from students aged fifteen to eighteen from Matamata College all based on the theme ‘A Day in the Life’. It was amazing to see the unusual, unique and classical interpretation of this idea in the student’s work.

support and generosity with the Arts at Matamata College. They are a pleasure to work with. I would also like to thank Kodak and Black for their help in framing the students’ art work and allowing us to use their space for display. Please take this opportunity to view the work and add your vote to viewer’s choice. These are also available for purchase. I am extremely proud of the work the students have done and would like to congratulate all of them on their efforts. Jolene Rogerson TIC Art

Keith Cooke from Reid & Harrison along with Daron Parton, a Local and International Illustrator had the task of judging the Mixed Media. Keith Cooke and Paul Sutherland, a Local and International Photographer judged the photos. This was no easy task and one I would not like to undertake. They both noted that the theme was not an easy one and took a lot of thought and creativity to think of an idea that was a little out of the norm and unexpected. There were three categories this year. The first was Mixed Media. This section was filled with some amazingly detailed work in a range of styles. Jessica Lowe in Year 11 was the Supreme Winner closely followed by Ally-Jane McDonald from Year 13. Helen DrysdaleDunn, Year 12 was runner up. The second category was Photography and top spot was tightly contested. Mikayla Williams, Year 12 received the Supreme Award followed by April Baritos Year 13 and Karmen Benson Year 12. The Emerging Artist Award went to Year 12 student Gareth Watkins, with his outstanding painting. There was a new category this year with an anonymous sponsor dedicated to Sculpture. These included Created Characters by the Year 11 class. Supreme Award went to Sacha Deas. Jessica Lowe and Caitlin Crozier were awarded Runners up. I would like to thank Reid & Harrison for their continued www.matamatacollege.school.nz www.matamatacollege.school.nz

Coast to Coast Challenge As Head Students of Matamata College, we decided to do a fundraiser to support our local community. Our aim for this fundraiser was to support Youth Mental Health in our community by raising money for our local Starfish organisation. Starfish Social Services is a community based non-profit organisation that provides a service to struggling youth and their families in the MatamataPiako District. It was started, to fill a need in the community, where the youth had a lack of support and needed a place that provided help and care. Protecting the mental health of these youth is a big part of Starfish's work. There are proven benefits of exercise on mental health and this is what sparked the idea of completing the challenge of biking from Coast to Coast (Raglan to Waihi Beach) to raise awareness and funds for our local Starfish, as well as the importance of exercise on mental health. We were successful in our ride, completing 172km of biking in less than 10 hours. We were very grateful to be well supported by the community, where funds were raised from a give-a-little page and donations from local businesses, trusts and organisations. As a group, we managed to pedal on through flat tyres, 10km of wrong turns, crashes and cramps, keeping in mind that there are youth in the community who face far more difficult mental challenges every day. It was such a humbling experience to have completed all of this, together. - Student Leaders; Brooke, Kate, Reuben & Harrison

EUROPEAN ART TOUR The July holidays was an adventurous experience for 17 Design, Art and Media Students. Along with Mrs Rogerson, Mrs Osborne and 5 parent helpers, we ventured across the other side of the world to Europe. First stop was London. Enduring the searing heat, we experienced all the local sights. Checking out where the Queen resides, Cathedrals, Towers and learning the history of London as we toured around. Students had free time to enjoy shopping and the London Eye, learning how to navigate the Underground. One of the highlights was visiting the Harry Potter Studios and touring all the sets, costumes and special effects.

We left London via the Eurostar, travelling under the sea to France. We arrived to a wave of celebrations in Paris from winning the semi-final in the Football World cup. The Louvre was an experience as we battled to the front of a dense crowd to view the Mona Lisa. Crowds continued as students patiently waited for their turn up the Eiffel Tower to stunning views of Paris. The highlight of Paris, was everyone participating in a Graffiti workshop. We made our mark on Paris by designing and spray painting a mural on a wall! The following day we experienced the magical world of Disneyland before catching a flight to Rome. The Ancient Rome walking tour enriched our history knowledge as we appreciated all the buildings, incredible stories and ruins throughout the city. Italian Pizza and Pasta was the best of all meals for the 2 week trip. After a tour through Vatican City and the incredibly moving Sistine Chapel we headed on the long flight back to Hong Kong for a 2 day whirlwind sightseeing tour and shopping of the markets. Needless to say it was a whirlwind trip of a lifetime for all of us. Thank you to all that helped make it happen.

NYLON

After months of practice and rehearsing, 14 talented students from Years 10 – 13 performed their hearts out on stage for the school production Nylon. Nylon was a cabaret style show featuring well known musicals from Broadway and the West End. Four-part harmony, dance and beautiful costumes wowed audiences as they were treated to a 2 hour spectacular of songs from Mamma Mia, Les MisÊrables and The Lion King, just to name a few. Special thanks go out to all those who helped to put on this show, in particular Glenn Rowsell for his countless hours doing the lighting. Laura Atkins - TIC Music & Arts Coordinator

NZSS Squash Team member, Braedyn Henderson has had success. Braedyn Henderson has just returned from Sydney with the NZ Secondary Schools Squash, where NZ took out the Trans Tasman series against NSW & Queensland and convincingly won the test against Australia. Braedyn had 10 games over 4 days, winning 6 out of his 7 singles games and all 3 of his doubles games. He had a great time experiencing some international competition.
