A Magnificent Event

I wish to thank the many volunteers, sponsors, staff, parents and community members who commit so much to provide sporting opportunities for our students. We simply could not offer what we do without your support - so thank you. To co-ordinate this prize giving is a huge exercise and it is important that we acknowledge those responsible. In particular I acknowledge the efforts of Head of Physical Education, Wendy Davidson and our wonderful Sports Co-ordinating team of Kim Lawrence and new addition, Kirstin Atkinson, for their efforts to make this evening the success it was.

WINTER TOURNAMENT WEEK 3—7 SEPTEMBER UNISS 2018 (Upper North Island Secondary Schools’) New World College A played in the A Grade of Upper North Island Secondary Schools (UNISS) Netball Tournament. We went into the tournament knowing it was going to be a tough week and we were reminded of just how tough in our first game, against last year’s winners, St Kentigens! Despite the shock of the big loss the girls came back fighting in the afternoon game to topple Sacred Heart Girls’ College. The next game against another powerhouse of Auckland netball, Westlake Girls’ High, ended in defeat for us. This left us with one win from our first pool and into a new pool in the bottom 16 of the 32 teams in A Grade. After wins against Auckland Girls’ Grammar and Kaitaia, our third game in the new pool was against Rotorua Girls’ High School. This was possibly the most exciting game of the week. We trailed by two at the first break, four at half-time, and six at the third quarter break. In the final seconds of the game we intercepted a pass which we scored from to draw the game. RGHS had also beaten AGGS and Kaitaia but we finished top of the pool with a slightly better goal average. We were now safe from the relegation zone guaranteed a placing from 17th-24th. We got a win against Carmel and then had a loss against a tough side from Massey. On day five we had two losses to Maclean’s and St Dominic’s, finishing the tournament in 20th place out of 120 teams. It was wonderful to play this tournament at Harbourside Netball Centre at the Mount and it felt like a ‘home venue’ for us. We stayed in units right on Marine Parade and although the weather could have been kinder we couldn’t complain about the views on the sunny occasions. Thanks Noeline Cleland! Our parents spoiled us with amazing home cooked meals they delivered each day. Shannon and I gave out points for each game and our MVP for the week went to Oceanna Paul, the Players Player of the tournament (voted by the girls) went to Katie Fountain. Mandy Williams was an inspirational leader for the team. Mereana Paul was our UNISS umpire. Vicky d’Abo and Elna Muller took over bench duties for us from Wednesday. A big thanks to our wonderful sponsors Matthew and Sheree Hart of New World Matamata. Thanks also to the Kiwanis Club of Matamata who gave us financial support to attend UNISS. We love this game and will be excited all over again to compete at UNISS 2019 on the North Shore. Kim Lawrence (Coach) & Shannon Johnson (Manager)

1st X1 Boys’ Hockey 2018 – Woolaston Trophy Tournament in Levin It was fitting that the 1st X1 Boys Hockey season concluded with a tournament at the Woolaston Cup in Levin. The team won two out of their five games at the tournament. The results did not tell the story of how well the team played throughout the week however. It will be remembered as an exciting and successful Tournament with excellent hockey being played by all players and results close and games tight. Reuben Jones (Captain) was voted best player for Matamata College at the conclusion of the games. Playing for the College for the last time in 2018 were Year 13 students Reuben Jones, Flynn Drysdale-Dunn (in the team for five years), Patrick Roskam, Matthew Lansdaal (in the team for four years) Owen Veltman and Year 12 student Luke Pilmore-Evans.

1st X1 Girls’ Hockey 2018 at Winter Tournament The 1st XI Hockey Girls have had a fantastic 2018 season. The new additions to the team who replaced the five senior girls from last year, had a strong training ethic and collectively brought with them a determined positive attitude and a drive to succeed. The team had an overall goal to be competitive and do themselves proud which was instilled in them right from the word go from Coach, Murray Hawkings. Every single team member worked hard and gave their full commitment to each and every game, which saw the girls achieve some great success. This year they played in the A Grade of the Waikato competition for the second year running. They also competed in the Intercity competition which comprised of 20 A Grade teams from the Midlands area split into two divisions. The girls played in Division 2 and their grit and determination saw them come 4th place overall. Heading into tournament, Eveline Hankers Memorial Cup held in Taupo, the girls had been focusing on ball carrying, stick skills, using width and softening and weighted passes. In addition an emphasis was placed on ensuring they remained mentally tough, confident and trusted each other, exhibiting the strong team work ethos they had carried all season. The girls played some outstanding hockey and came 3rd place out of 17 teams.
