ollowing in the footsteps of her brother Kaleb, Matamata College student Mikayla Reid entered the annual PowerTalk Matamata speech contest recently, with outstanding results. In accordance with PowerTalk guidelines, participating members deliver a speech that must be a minimum of five minutes and a maximum of eight minutes in duration.

Hinny pair celebrates another national title roudly flying the flag for Hinuera Bowling Club, Bev Corbett and Debbie White have once again ensured the black and gold strip is well remembered on the national circuit. The women recently secured their second New Zealand National Club Championships Pairs title in the recent National Finals of this event held at Brown’s Bay. “Playing alongside Bev for the past seven or eight years has been a privilege and without a doubt, lifted my game tremendously” says Debbie. “She is an iconic legend of the game and although fiercely competitive, is an incredibly team focussed player, mentor and a formidable talent on the green. I am always so proud to play with her” Having won the Waikato Open Pairs, Bev and Debbie then had to qualify for the NZ Championship Finals by winning the Zone playoffs against Bay of Plenty, Counties-Manukau and Thames Valley at Thames in March.

With the 2014 New Zealand title in this event in Dunedin already under their belt, Bev and Debbie were very aware they would be facing some of the top bowlers from around the country.

Several players in the field in fact, had either represented New Zealand at various levels or had been part of the Bowls New Zealand Development programme.

“We have learned over the years to go into any game with the attitude that we can only do our best and whatever’s to be, will be” says Debbie. “We are passionate about the sport and really enjoy each other’s company - we love to have fun. If we’re having fun, we’re doing alright!”

With day one of the competition bringing three good wins and reasonably good points differential, Bev and Debbie were very aware the first game of the second day really was the danger game.

“We didn’t start that game too well to be honest” says Debbie, “but thankfully, soon managed to get control of it. We were absolutely elated at the end of the five rounds to have amassed a 50 point nett shot differential. We were well ahead of the other five regions (North Harbour, Nelson, Whanganui, Dunedin and Hawkes Bay) in points, and were the only team to finish unbeaten.” The win rings up Bev’s 11th National Championship title, and is the 4th for Debbie.

Absolutely “blown away” by the congratulatory messages following their success, Bev and Debbie would like to particularly thank their families, friends and the community for their constant support and encouragement. “We also couldn’t do what we do without the support of the Hinuera Bowling Club – we are each other’s biggest critics, but we are also each other’s biggest advocates.

Success breeds success" says Debbie, “and Bowls Hinuera definitely has their fair share - we owe such a lot of ours to the incredible people we play with and are surrounded by!”

Bev and Debbie also won their Club Championship Pairs, and after having come through the first day of Champion of Champions played recently in Hamilton, will contest the final, against Tokoroa in Putaruru this weekend.

Perfect weather for the ducks atamata Clay Target Club in conjunction with Te Aroha Gun Club hosted the annual Duckshooter’s Shoot on Sunday amid horrendously wet weather and extremely soggy conditions underfoot.

“Regardless of the weather, this annual shoot gives recreational shooters the opportunity to hone their skills a week out from duck shooting opening morning” says President, Mike Buckman. “It was great to see so many hearty souls taking part, and really good to have almost a dozen younger members join us. We’re a relatively small club but with competitors travelling from as far as Auckland, obviously punch above our weight as far as

these events are concerned. It takes a lot of coordination to get set up and the committee particularly appreciate everyone’s effort on Saturday, given the inclement weather. We also offer a huge thanks to those who helped out on Sunday – especially Carol and her BBQ prowess cooking up the hot snarlers – they were really appreciated on such a miserable day!”

Set up in a simulated field format, the event uses a combination of DTL traps, skeet traps and static sporting traps. This provides a variety of target practice which includes incoming targets, cross targets and battue’s that roll in the air rather than flying flat.” Then, with each competitor shooting a total of 75 targets over three

fields, “he who shooteth the most, winneth Pongo’s Duck” laughs Mike. “It’s a great day and thanks to the generosity of Bungey (Chris Bungard) and the team at Sportsworld and Robert Harris Cafe, features some pretty fantastic prizes. Bungey has supported the Matamata Gun Club particularly this event for many years and we certainly appreciate that.”

The individual winner of the day also takes away the coveted Pongo’s Duck, a trophy commemorating Alan “Pongo” Reid who as a Life Member, was a stalwart supporter of the club and of course, a very keen hunter before he passed away.

atamata FENZ (Fire Emergency New Zealand), Chief Fire Officer Kevin Curtis was extremely grateful to be presented a cheque for $9,695 recently, proceeds of the 2018 New World Matamata Charity Golf Tournament.

Having selected the fire station as recipients of tournament proceeds, New World owner/operator Matthew Hart offered his appreciation to co-sponsors Lion, Fonterra, Nestle and BNZ, and almost 50 other local businesses and organisations that were only too happy to donate prizes and giveaways, silent auction items and hole sponsorship. “We all enjoyed another extremely successful event” said Matthew, “and largely that was due to the coordination by Matamata Golf Club Manager, Graeme Reid and his wife, Heather. We had some terrific sponsors alongside us that provided immense support, and to everyone that contributed in some way, we offer our thanks and appreciation.”

Working closely with St John and Police, Kevin on behalf of the fire station, acknowledged that as first responders, there are often instances where specialized equipment is extremely advantageous.

“Funding is always a challenge” he said, “and like many other voluntary groups, it’s often the generosity from our own com-

munity that enables the purchase of extras that make our job a little easier, or procedures more effective. We were extremely fortunate to have had a storage container donated by J Swap Contractor’s which has been invaluable for housing resources so now, with the extra funds donated from this charity golf event, intend to develop a small training facility on and around this.”

Nationally, the identity of the New Zealand Fire Service changed in 2017 and is now known as Fire and Emergency New Zealand (FENZ). As far as the general public is concerned there are no obvious changes to service provided - appliances are still manned and operated by the dedicated local volunteers attending to our community needs.

“We are increasingly attending incidents outside the basic realm of fire” says Kevin, “so incorporating the ‘emergency’ into the service correlates the reciprocal support we provide to ambulance and police. We are extremely fortunate in our district to have a range of fantastic volunteers within our respective organisations that support each other. We are all very proud of our role and happy to take enquiry from anyone wanting to become involved.” If you would like any further information about becoming a volunteer you are welcome to

Welcoming the little critters ith children taking an avid interest in the life cycle of a monarch butterfly, early childhood educators at Tower Road Christian Preschool took the opportunity to research and study the phenomenon, with incredibly positive results.

“Our kids were absolutely fascinated” says Sarah, one of the ECE teachers at the centre. “We created a poster showing how they begin as an egg around the size of a pinhead that hatches into a caterpillar in just three to five days. The kids were really surprised that they are fully grown in just three weeks! After spinning a web, the caterpillars then shed their skin, creating a beautiful chrysalis where inside, the butterfly starts to grow. Around two weeks later the butterfly will hatch and after its wings dry, will set off and fly! Looking at the process through the eyes of a child certainly reminds you how awesome the whole process is!”

says Sandy, “and feedback from our families has been great. One mum was telling us her son went to her with a cockroach in his hand wanting to save it for the bug hotel! “A praying Mantis is one thing” the mum laughed, “but I couldn’t quite bring myself to store the cockroach for him!”

Following the monarch focus, the preschool organised a bus trip to Butterfly Creek in Auckland where heading off in a 50 seater bus, staff, kids and supporters had a wonderful time! One of the most fascinating things for the children at the facility was a “Bug Hotel” and relieving teacher, Sandy, decided there was no reason the idea couldn’t be replicated.

“On our return, I contacted a range of people that might be able to donate some natural junk” laughs Sandy, “and was overwhelmed at the response. We were given all kinds of things which worked wonderfully well in constructing our own Bug Hotel. Three of our little regulars, Percy, Jack and Brooklyn were particularly excited and contributed a huge amount of

Let’s not forget

By Brian Bonnar, Matamata Bible Church Last week many ANZAC commemorations happened around the country where we remember the sacrifices made by many. In these service’s we remember both the depths of human cruelty through the oppression and brutality of war, along with the heights of human love shown by the women and men who sacrificed their lives for our freedom. Jesus tells us in the bible, “Greater love has no one than this: to lay down one’s life for one’s friends.” The people we remember on ANZAC day showed love for their friends and family, they

showed love for their country, and they believed in something that was bigger than their own lives. This is something for us to contemplate as we remember, ‘lest we forget’ what they fought for.

It was this belief in something bigger that gave them the courage to lay down their lives. Many will have sung the national anthem at the ANZAC services where God is acknowledged as the one who ultimately brings us through times of strife and war. As we look back to a dark time in our history, we are able to see God at work. Because of

this we can look forward and trust that God will bring us through whatever struggles we face today. As we face all the ups and downs in life we are not abandoned by God, for God reaches into our circumstances and shares in both our suffering and joy.

For God has experienced life as we do through Jesus, who freely gave up his life because he had something far greater planned for all of us. Through his sacrifice we were given the freedom to live in relationship with God. Let’s not forget what God has done for us.

Masters of the provinces Topping 14 provinces from Northland to Southland and everywhere in between has left one local women reeling after an experience she describes as exciting, heartbreaking and nerve wracking all in the space of five minutes!

Matamata golfer, Pam Wright - a member of the 2018 Waikato Masters team, recently returned home with the coveted Russell Grace Cup for top province in the New Zealand Masters Championship held in Inglewood, Taranaki.

“For those that aren’t familiar with golf, the provincials to us are likened to the NPC of rugby” laughs Pam! “It’s an event that features some of the best provincial players in the country and to be selected for your regional team is a huge honour. I was absolutely stoked to be selected and thrilled to have the best caddy in the world (and my number one sidekick), Sheelah Lamb supporting me throughout the tournament.

I couldn’t imagine playing such an incredible tournament without her and thankfully, she was just as excited!”

With four rounds to play, the three best gross stableford points were counted in each round, and says Pam, “thankfully each of us had our turn as the non-counting player! We all had a one round drop so later, to take the win together was incredibly rewarding.

Matamata golfer Pam Wright was a member of the Waikato team that recently won the New Zealand Masters Championship held in Inglewood, Taranaki. She is pictured with team mates Jill Morgan, Robyn Pellow and Julie Gee.

It was such a team effort and although we were just one point ahead after the first round, we were able to hold and exceed that to a five point lead into the final round. There, we gained another point which saw us finish with a six point victory. We were absolutely elated – especially as Waikato hasn’t had a win since the Inter-provincials at Fielding in 2013.”

With gross stableford, golfer’s handicaps are irrelevant. Scoring is hole by hole with three points for a birdie, two points for par and one point for a bogey. No points are scored for anything else and all start off at zero. “Thanks to Sheelah’s intuition and how well she knows my game, I averaged 29 points over the four rounds” says Pam, “and was really pleased with that.”

Two of Pam’s team mates, Jill Morgan and Robyn Pellow were recently selected to represent New Zealand in the 2018 Women’s Senior Trans Tasman Cup. This will be held in Adelaide and as you can imagine, the rest of the team and supporters will be watching with immense pride.”

A tribute to the original pop diva ell known musical director and professional musician, Leon Gray is excited to be working alongside Matamata Musical Theatre cast and crew for a second time with the season of Dusty, the original pop diva which had its opening performance last night. His last Matamata musical association was with the hugely successful “Best little whorehouse in Texas’ directed by Helen Snook in 2014.

“Having coordinated all the musical aspects of the show including teaching vocal technique and training up the singers, Leon also worked very closely with the band which contributed to a phenomenal show” says Kym Bolton Hampton, Director of this year’s show. “I had absolutely no hesitation in inviting him to work alongside me when confirming our performance of Dusty, the original pop diva.”

The show starts out in the 1950s where schoolgirl, Mary O’Brien, imagines she could become a glamorous singing idol.

Professing God’s natural order of things to be first attaining School Certificate and soon after, a marriage certificate, her parents tell her that her fantasies will never come true and not to dream the impossible dream.

Regardless however, Mary takes control of her own life, striving to find her ‘sound’, and transforming herself into the pop diva, Dusty Springfield. Her life is not without angst as she battles personal demons, lost love and her own perfectionism - but finding a sense of family and acceptance from those close to her gives her the solace and stability that the pop star lifestyle cannot.

In her early career, much of Dusty’s odd behaviour was seen as more or less in fun - including her food fights and hurling crockery down stairs. She enjoyed an extremely successful career and released many acclaimed albums and singles. Later however, Dusty’s alcoholism and drug addiction affected her musical career and, in a sad twist of fate, she was also diagnosed with breast cancer in 1994. She released her final album in 1995 while in remission, however the cancer returned and the legendary Dusty Springfield passed away in March 1999.

“Dusty, the original pop diva season runs until May 12” says Kym, “and truly is a show not to be missed. The cast and crew have worked tirelessly to perfect an authentic tribute to her life which of course,

includes many of her incredibly successful hits. We are all very proud to bring such a show to local audiences and hope you believe we have done it justice.”

Acknowledging the Anzacs lthough traditionally observed largely by returned servicemen and their families, Anzac Day has become an occasion for all New Zealanders and Australians to remember and commemorate men and women who lost their lives at war.

Marked on April 25 each year, this was the day in 1915 that New Zealand and Australian soldiers landed at Gallipoli as a part of the Allied Gallipoli Campaign. It was Australian soldiers that arrived just before dawn. The first New Zealand soldiers landed after 9am with most landing in the afternoon. So, while the dawn service has some timing significance, much of its importance comes as war veterans remember the routine dawn ‘stand-to’ before the engagement of war began.

Returned Servicemen were responsible for the very first Anzac Day on April 25th 1916 – the first anniversary of the Anzac landing at Gallipoli. It was through their organisation and commitment that the day was officially recognised as a holy day by the government in 1922.

The large loss of life suffered at Gallipoli sparked the commemorative day, but over time Anzac Day has grown into a day where servicemen

and women are remembered and honoured for fighting in wars right across the globe.

While different towns and communities all have their own Anzac Day commemorations, there are many traditions and rituals which are standard throughout. The Dawn Parade, or Dawn Service as it is sometimes called, is the most popular of the Anzac Day traditions. It begins with a parade by returned servicemen and women to the Cenotaph, where they are met by family and other members of the community. Uniformed servicemen form a guard of honour around the memorial.

The most universal reading is the Anzac dedication: At this hour, on this day, Anzac received its baptism of fire and became one of the immortal names in history. We who are gathered here think of the comrades who went out with us to battle but did not return. We feel them still near us in spirit. We wish to be worthy of their great sacrifice. Let us, therefore, once again dedicate ourselves to the service of the ideals of which they died. As the dawn is even now about to pierce the night, so let the memory inspire us to work for the coming of the new light into the

dark places of the world.

The dawn service is brought to an end with a lone bugler sounding the Last Post, and then the crowd observes a minute silence in memory of those who have passed away.

After the dawn service, the Returned Servicemen Association (RSA) hosts an Anzac breakfast. Mostly this is to give people a chance to talk and reminisce, and often a traditional ‘rum and coffee’ is served. The rum and coffee signifies a tot of rum, which was the traditional pre-battle ration.

In addition to the Dawn Service, which is primarily focussed on the returned servicemen and women, there is always a mid-morning service on Anzac Day. This service is often referred to as the citizen’s service, because it is designed for everybody in the community to participate in. It is during the midmorning service that community members are given the opportunity to lay wreaths in remembrance of those who have passed away.

He is pictured visiting the grave of his great grandfather ET (Edward Thomas) Stanley who was injured in the battle of Messines and confined to headquarters at Passchendaele. Due to his extensive shrapnel wounds, Mr Stanley was very fortunate to return home.

NZ Cyclists Corps in World War I

The New Zealand Cyclist Corps Memorial Trophy honours the World War 1 service of a group of soldiers who contributed to the war effort on bicycle. Presented to the winner of the U23 Mens Road Race at the Elite Road National Championships for the first time in 2018 - the centenary year of World War 1 - the NZCC Memorial Trophy honours both cycling and war history of a hundred years past. Built from a cobblestone taken from the Kemmelberg, a famed hill climb in the Gent Wevelgem Race, and a site where the NZCC contributed to war efforts on the Western Front, and mounted on a piece of timber taken from a World War 1 trench, the trophy has a strong connection to the battlefields of World War 1.

records show that he went to Egypt first and during his time overseas he was hospitalised twice with influenza. The London Gazette of 21 August 1917 stated that he was awarded the Military Medal “For bravery in the field, ((Ploegsteert).” Ploegsteert is in Belgium where fierce fighting took place during WWI. His name is recorded on the Tirau District Roll of Honour and that he was awarded a Military Medal.

Henry Edward Coats (known as Harry) No 10784 also fought in the NZ Cyclists Corps in Belgium and France. He was hospitalized with mumps and was recorded once as losing his cycle. Sergeant H E Coats of the NZ Cyclists Corps was recorded in the London Gazette 13 November 1918 with being awarded a Military Medal for “gallantry and devotion to duty. Owing to casualties early in the advance, this N.C.O was the only Sergt. left and he rendered valuable assistance to his officer (H Bloomfield) in conducting the advance and afterwards consolidating under the exceptionally heavy fire the unit was subjected to. As Lewis Gun N.C.O. he handled his gun with marked ability and success.”

Harry’s name with his Military Medal was also recorded on the Tirau District Roll of Honour. Both Okoroire soldiers re-

turned home.

The Wevelgem Spring Classic cycle race, Paris Roubaix, which is held in Belgium, covers roads where some of the battles took place in World War One. Especially difficult was the very steep Kemmelberg hill covered with cobblestones. In 2017 the organisers remembered the NZ Cyclists Corps and wished to commemorate it so the sacrifice of the nearly 60 New Zealanders who lost their lives here would be remembered. They decided to make a trophy from a cobblestone from the Kemmelberg hill, put a plaque on it and mount it on some wood from the trenches. This hill was where there were some of the most ferocious battles in the First World War. This trophy was to be taken back to New Zealand to present to the winner of the under 23 NZ Road Cycling Champion held in 2018. Auckland’s James Fouche who won the title of the best young rider under 23 at Napier in 2018 had the honour of becoming the first recipient of the New Zealand Cyclist Corps Memorial Trophy.

Over time their story has been forgotten, but thanks to this new trophy, the sacrifices the NZ Cyclists made, will once again be remembered.

This cycling corps was set up because it was the best way to get across the dreadful, bomb crater riddled terrain in northern France and Belgium.

Guiding a memorial clean up

group of Matamata Girl Guides certainly earned their service badge this week with an enormous effort in preparing for Anzac Day. Offering their services to the Matamata Memorial RSA once again, the Girl Guides and their leaders arrived at the cemetery on Sunday and worked alongside Morrinsville Cadets and members of the Matamata Memorial RSA raking leaves, mowing lawns and placing memorial crosses and poppies at the foot of each plaque.

“It’s always quite special to be involved in preparing for Anzac Day” says Guide Leader, Linda Sinclair. “Our Guides see tidying up the memorial section as something really respectful for all those soldiers remembered, and are very proud to do so each year.”

Too, RSA committee members

appreciated the Guides assistance and acknowledged their immense pride in young people understanding the importance of Anzac Day. “Committee members are obviously getting older, so to see enthusiastic young people prepared to come along and offer their services wherever needed is wonderful. These young ladies are a credit to our community and we really appreciate their efforts with our tidy up.”

On Anzac morning, Matamata Guides took part in the Dawn Parade march to the Cenotaph before meeting back at the RSA to help with clearing plates and assisting where they could after breakfast. They also attended the cemetery service laying a wreath to acknowledge our fallen soldiers.

Cedars in the Drive

opular choices for big trees in parks and large gardens are the cedars, imposing trees often reaching 40m in height with an attractive shape, grass green to blue-green needle leaves and scented pinkish-red wood. So it is not surprising that the cedars are well represented in the Drive – we have ten or so in all. There are three important species in the genus Cedrus, the Atlas (or Atlantic) Cedar (Cedrus atlantica), the Lebanon Cedar (Cedrus libani), and the Himalayan Cedar or Deodar (Cedrus deodara).

The Atlas Cedar is a native of the Atlas Mountains of Morocco and Algeria, where it forms mountain forests, the home of the Barbary macaque or Barbary ape, the same species that inhabits the Rock of Gibraltar just across the narrow strait. Legend has it that when the apes leave the Rock the British will go also. The pale bluegreen colour of the needles on many trees is the result of a white waxy layer on the needles which helps the tree to conserve water and prevents it from drying out.

(This feature is denoted by the term glauca in the botanical name). It has barrelshaped seed cones 6-12 cm long which contain winged seeds. The popular variety ‘pendula’ has branches which droop down giving a very attractive appearance. The largest Atlas Cedar in New Zealand is reputed to be one growing in the Arthur St Reserve near the centre of Dunedin.

Planted in 1870, it is 23m high with a spread of 25m.

The Lebanon Cedar (Cedrus libani), grows naturally in the mountains of Lebanon and south-west Turkey. Famed in history, its timber was used by the Phoenicians, the first sea-trading nation, for shipbuilding, and was the major source of timber used by the Assyrians, Babylonians and Persians. It was prized by the ancient Egyptians for boat building. King Solomon relied on his cedar forests for timber and had thousands of workers tending the trees. Today the Cedar of Lebanon appears on the flag of modern Lebanon. In botanical terms C. lebani and C. atlantica are almost indistinguishable and many botanists regard them as a single species.

The Himalayan Cedar, or Deodar, (Cedrus deodara), is native to the western Himalayas, western Afghanistan, northern Pakistan and India and southern Tibet, growing at altitudes of 1500 to 3000m. It is in demand as a building timber, noted for its durability and close grain. The wellknown houseboats of Srinagar in Kashmir are made of cedar. A feature of the Deodar is the drooping habit of the main branches.

In the Drive you can see a fine specimen of

Atlas (or Atlantic) cedar in the lawn of the Phillips Garden on Tamihana St, near some birch trees. This is quite a young tree, planted in 1989 by the Waterson family in memory of the late Rosa Waterson.

Nearby in the lawn is a rather spectacular dome shaped tree, also listed in the Drive catalogue as Cedrus altantica glauca pendula but very different in appearance to the Waterson tree. Left to itself it would sprawl on the ground; only an ingenious structure of poles and battens has trained it to its present appearance. “Hillier’s Manual of Trees and Shrubs”, that invaluable reference book for every plantsman, notes a prostrate form of the Himalayan Cedar, so it is probably not surprising that there should be a similar form in the Atlas Cedar as well. It was planted by the then president of the Drive Society, the late Arnold Phillips, who probably acquired it through his membership of the International Dendrology Society, always a good source of rare and unusual varieties. In its early days it looked very ungainly and there was a time when some committee members, and some of the neighbours, pressed for it to be removed. Arnold, backed by other committee members, was adamant that it should be retained and that it would come right, given a bit of time. Fortunately the latter view prevailed, and though for some years it was referred to as “Phillips’ folly”, we now have a very rare and very attractive specimen which fully justifies its prominent position. There are two lessons in this. The first is that with trees, as with cheese, good things take time, and the second is that given a bit of time, effort and ingenuity, a tree can be trained to do pretty much what you want. So don’t be too quick to reach for the chain saw!

Some you can find easily. In the Broadway Block there is a big Atlas Cedar right beside the road, on a bend, and about opposite across the road is a Himalayan Cedar or Deodar. See if you can spot the differences. Cedars are noted for their brittle timber, and a large specimen which was growing by the roadside near the Tawa St entrance developed a habit of shedding limbs without warning was declared dangerous and was removed. In the Magnolia Block, on the east side of the road adjacent to the Tamihana St entrance, is a goodsized Cedar and a little further along is another. One is a Himalayan Cedar and the other a Deodar; can you tell which is which (look at that growth habit of the branches).

Then he said to John, “She is now your mother.” From then on, that disciple took her into his own home.

Even in his last hour, Jesus was still compassionate and did not neglect to care for his mother. He knew she would need support and help after he was gone. As mother’s day approaches again we can dwell on the thought of young people’s attitude to their mothers today. Are we showing the love and consideration that we should to our mother?

Do we help when needed?

Jesus has set us a good example and we respect and love him for that.

ust like amateur sports clubs amateur drama and musical theatre groups have their own awards system to identify and recognise excellence and achievement.

As well as awards run by individual clubs for members there are currently three regional awards systems overseen by Music Theatre New Zealand, the organisation which represents and supports theatre clubs throughout the country.

Northern Area Performance Theatre Awards , or NAPTA’s, started in 2001 and are open to all amateur theatre groups in Zone 1 of MTNZ, the top end of the North Island, roughly from Pukekohe north. Otago

Southland Theatre Awards, OSTA’s, started in 2013 and cover all amateur theatre groups in MTNZ Zone 5, the bottom half of the South Island.

ZONY’s are for amateur drama and musical theatre groups, including schools, in MTNZ Zone 2, the Waikato and Bay of Plenty from just south of Pukekohe to Taupo and Taumaranui, and Hamilton to Tauranga, Whakatane and even Gisborne. A small group of about five judges see each production put up for judging by the society or school.

They then submit a report on the production to the convenor who tallies the reports. At the end of the year the judges meet to view the tallies and reports and select the nom-

inees and then winners in each category. Awards are then presented at an awards dinner attended by members of all the participating societies.

All nominees receive a certificate, and category winners receive a trophy. The evening is usually rounded off with a cabaret style show performed by members of the participating societies.

Productions opening soon include Rotorua Little Theatre’s presentation of Roger Hall’s comedy Glide Time, Musikmakers in Hamilton present Disney’s High School Musical and of course Matamata Musical Theatre presents “Dusty”, a musical about the life and career of singer Dusty Springfield.

Hobbiton going green obbitonTM Movie Set, nestled in the rolling green hills of the Alexander Farm, is making a commitment to sustainable development and reducing environmental impact with its new ‘Going Green’ initiative. As part of the initiative, the tourist attraction will add to its already successful actions including replacing takeaway packaging with compostable alternatives, sorting and composting general daily waste, and preserving the natural environment surrounding the movie set.

So far, the majority of non-compostable food packaging at The Shires RestÔ Café has already been swapped with alternatives made of materials such as bamboo fibre, paper, and Polylactic Acid (PLA), a material derived from sustainable plant resources with a carbon footprint of up to 75% less than traditional packaging materials. With 80,000 takeaway coffee cups sold from the Café each year, we have been able to replace these with biodegradable alternatives, making a significant difference to the amount of waste being sent to landfill.

Hobbiton Movie Set Food & Beverage Manager, Mitch King says “We are proud to have implemented our new compostable packaging at The Shires Rest Café,

as a great start to reducing our impact on general waste. We have a few items still to tick off our list and look forward to expanding these initiatives across the company.”

The Movie Set also have an on-site general waste processing plant where all waste collected in the rubbish bins at The Shires Rest and Green Dragon Inn is handsorted into organic waste, recycling and general refuse. Having adopted the same sorting principles as the Matamata Transfer Stations, Hobbiton have been able to streamline this process and start a composting heap for decomposable organic materials along with green waste from the gardens, which is then used to maintain

the gardens on the Movie Set. Even daily food waste and fresh vegetable cuttings are utilized and given to a local pig farmer to supplement their feed.

As well as reducing their footprint, Hobbiton are also working towards preserving the natural environment that makes it unique and attracts over half a million visitors to the area each year.

Hundreds of native seedlings are being planted around the riparian zone, with the hope to encourage more native birds to the area, as well as increasing water quality in the lake which is a centerpiece of the visitor experience.

NIWA scientists have been monitoring the lake’s water quality and biodiversity to

ensure it is up to a high standard.

Hobbiton Movie Set Chief Executive, Russell Alexander says “Our Going Green initiative is an integral part of our corporate responsibility and we believe it is extremely important to make the effort to minimize our impact on New Zealand’s precious environment.

Our aim is to become as self-sufficient and sustainable as reasonably practicable.

Our plan is to utilize our surrounding area and farming roots with a number of further steps to be taken over the next few years. We look forward to becoming even more environmentally friendly in the future and taking our visitors on this journey with us.”

As I am writing this I can look out the window and see the Waiumau has broken over its banks so it might be a while before the local streams are fishable again – best wait a few days I think!

In the Rotorua area the lakes are fishing particularly good at the moment, in particular, Lake Tarawera. At this time of the year the lake is just teaming with smelt, one of the trout’s favourite food sources. When trout feast on these they grow fast and become very fat. My friend Glen Skinner is a trout guide down there and has caught several over 3kg in the past week or so. Glen has also been doing well on Lake Rotoiti with his best fish there just tipping the 4kg mark. Very nice ah?

www.sceneonline.co.nz fishing show he was looking for a bit of rain. I haven’t had the heart to phone him and see if he has had enough! The good news though, is that when the river levels drop again there will be a fresh run of trout in them. The rainbows are heading upstream now to spawn offering you a great opportunity to catch some nice fish.

Out on the lake the deep trolling has been producing some nice fish, as too has the jigging.

On the sea scene the west coast has been performing very well. Dwayde Pinny on his charter boat, The Clansman, has been having some exceptional days on the snapper. He tells me the best results are being found fishing over the worm beds in 55m off Albatross Point.

At this time of the year so many people make the mistake of putting their fishing gear away in some dark corner of the shed – big mistake!

Dwayde will be the first to tell you May is one of his most productive times of the year. Many

snapper coming in are in double figures.

Up in the Coromandel it’s a similar story. As you can imagine the place has had a big stir up over the past few days – big seas, high winds and lots of rain. As things settle down this week though, it should fish well. With the full moon on Monday just gone, there are big tides at the moment. The big tides give you ideal conditions to fish the close in forms around Te Kumau. There will be extra water flow running through them so burley up and take advantage of it. Over the ranges to the Mercury Bay area and up to the Great Barrier, the snapper fishing has been exceptional. This is the word I am getting from Jon Ellwood, charter skipper of The Whai and fishes that area all the time. John said the change of light fishing around the edges of the foul ground has been very rewarding with snapper up to that magical 20lb mark.

Plenty the snapper fishing has been quite good.

Local snapper fisho Vaughan Mitchell has been doing well on the goodship Leander – in the past week Mitch has fished a couple of comps and done very well. He has fished both Motiti and Mayor and tells me the snapper are about in quite good numbers.

Another well-known fisho, Brett Hodge, found a day off from his Post & Rails depot was just the ticket. Brett headed out from the Mount and settled into a soft baiting session off the Papamoa area. Fishing in just 14 to 15m of water, he and the lads got a near limit bag.

Brett had to be content to net the biggest one of the day though – an absolute beauty of nearly 20lb, to his son Douglas. Great stuff guys, a proud day for all concerned. As I said earlier, don’t put your gear away at this time of the year – there is a lot more good fishing to be had. Happy fishing, Bungey.
