Memories of Matamata College in the 1950s and 60s

Abridged from the archives of David Stanley, Geography teacher at Matamata College 1954 – 1970; Deputy Principal 1970 - 1985 hen I came to the school in 1954 the Principal was G McB Salt. A product of Auckland Grammar, where he had been Head of Science, he was used to the traditional dictatorial style of headmastership, where the Principal ruled and everyone else knew their place, including pupils, staff, Boards of Governors and parents.

Mr Salt, or “Potty” as he was known to all, was very supportive of staff in the abstract, was active in the PPTA and served as President for some years. But for staff on the ground it was a different story.

Asked for advice, he would lean back in his chair, narrow his eyes, and come out with something like “So what?” or “Over to you, boy” – very helpful. But it did make you rely on your own resources. Then there was the matter of chalk. When you wanted a supply of chalk (remember chalk?) you had to go to the Principal and ask for it. Or was this just a way on making sure that he made contact with every staff member at least once a week? Yeah, right. Potty seldom left his office, where he was reputed to spend his time reading Popular Mechanics magazine or staring out of the window.

The first week of the year was “barracks week” when the place was turned into a military camp, the staff dressed up as officers and the boys did drill, shooting and other military arts. The Officer Commanding, Percy Stone, asked if I would like to be part of the action. I must have seemed a bit unenthusiastic, so he fixed me with a stony stare and said, “Why not?” I couldn’t think of any real reason why not, so I agreed; provided that an Air Training Corps unit was established, having been an

undistinguished member of the ATC while at New Plymouth Boys’ High School. Almost instantaneously I found myself commissioned as a Pilot Officer in the RNZAF and officer commanding No 73 School Unit, Air Training Corps. While all this was going on the girls followed more ladylike pursuits under the guidance of the women staff. Meanwhile administration proceeded at a leisurely pace. Work on the timetable was not started until the first day of term and the First Assistant spent barracks week working on it. Sometimes it was not finished when classes started and we had to manage on a temporary timetable until it was done.

What a contrast when Arthur Lucas became Principal in 1959. He had a military background, having been a staff officer in the Western Desert in WW2. It was often said that he ran the place like a military operation. He was efficient himself and expected others to be the same, stood no nonsense, was seldom in his office, and strode round the school at a pace that had others running to keep up.

His was a different style of leadership.

He described himself as “first among equals”. He had no time for non-essentials and red tape. He quickly started work on an ambitious development programme including the Gymnasium and Baths project, the renovation and up-grading of many subject teaching areas, and a new staff room. The timetable was expected to be completed well in advance of the start of classes.

The school had a strong sporting tradition, but the definition of ‘sport’ was rugby, cricket and basketball (later netball). If you had said the word “soccer” you would have been told to go home and wash your mouth out with soapy water. Hockey was reluctantly admitted to the pantheon after the arrival of Peter Dibble in 1955, but soccer had to wait for Hugh Grant, who joined

the staff in 1959, and these concessions were not achieved without a major effort on the part of their proponents.

There were some characters on the staff.

Joy Tompkins, the First Assistant Mistress, had just taken over from the redoubtable Vi Bell (about whom many still speak in hushed tones). Joy ruled the girls, and the staff, with a rod of iron. Like Vi Bell she was cast in the mould of the legendary hospital matrons of those days. Every school should have one.

Percy Stone, the First Assistant, also new in the post, was a keen sportsman (cricket and rugby, of course), officer commanding the cadet battalion, and a volunteer fireman liable to rush off at any moment in response to the siren’s call. One day he left his class and hurried to the fire station only to find that the source of the alarm was Matamata College. He was a good disciplinarian, never used the cane, and saw something good in everyone. I never heard him make a disparaging remark about anyone, not even the most wayward pupil.

Then there was Elizabeth Cranswick, a tiny woman who never raised her voice but could effortlessly control a class of adolescent boys, and could quell a Principal with a quietly spoken comment, an enviable talent indeed.

The school was nominally co-educational, but in effect was two single-sex schools on the same site. Boys and girls were not allowed to ‘fraternize’ on pain of punishment. Ensuring that ‘never the twain should meet’ was a major pre-occupation for the staff. Classes were single sex at least to the 5th form. I once had a 5th form geography class of twenty or so boys and a single girl, assigned to the class because of some quirk of the timetable.

These are a few random thoughts about the College of half a century ago.

The sponsorship and support by Nicholson Nissan also marks a real boost with the launch of a significant crowd funding campaign for the new Wingspan Centre to be completed and opened to visitors. Step Up offers a hand up

fter being postponed in September 2017 due to adverse weather, the Matamata College outdoor movie night was held on school grounds recently and provided a unique experience for many local families. The event, featuring the family friendly screening of Step Up Revolution, was preceded with entertainment from local musicians, dancers, Matamata Brass and of course, carnival style food and fun.

A fundraiser organised by art teacher Jolene Rogerson and her senior students, all funds raised at the event will contribute to expenses associated with a special opportunity later this year. Starting in London and heading on to Paris, Rome and Hong Kong, a trip has been organised that will be an excellent opportunity to see timeless architecture, art galleries, product design and film production for senior art students at Matamata College.

“Many of our seniors are passionate about art history and architecture” says Jolene, “and we believe it’s so important to encourage such fine appreciation. Some

of the timeless masterpieces by Michelangelo or Rodin, the Mona Lisa and Picasso for example, are things we have talked about in class, but to see them first hand will be absolutely fascinating, and something these students will never forget.”

Jolene and her students taking part in the European art experience would like to offer their thanks to everyone who partic-

Matamata Cafe, at home in Paris! fter heading to the final of the Rugby World Cup in 2015 Andrew and Lynne Arts fulfilled a promise they had made to their daughter Danielle several years earlier. Having studied French at Matamata College, Danni was disappointed when the school trip of her year was cancelled. Her parents promised her however, that “one day” they would take the opportunity of visiting France – more particularly Paris, the country’s capital.

They took this opportunity to fly Danni and her brother Kerry over to meet them and enjoy the experience as a family.

Having pre-Googled all the best tourist spots, the kids were keen to visit Matamata Café, a nine minute walk from their hotel in central Paris. “Of course we got horribly lost and an hour or so later when we eventually found the cafe, we had definitely earned a decent cup of coffee” says Lynne.

“I don’t think we’ve ever been so pleased to find what we were looking for!”

On arrival, Andrew was pretty keen for the traditional ‘big’ breakfast. “The café was extremely busy and as it happened, had run out of eggs” laughs Lynne. “The

host apologised profusely and after promising one of the staff would duck out to get some more, offered us the VIP area which was a small intimate space beautifully decorated. Of course with a private toilet and free Wifi, we were all very happy with the delay!”

Once inside, there were a couple of deja vu moments, not only for Lynne, but also Danni. “The café was kind of Kiwi styled we thought, but, almost at the same time, we noticed a symbol of décor that immediately reminded us of my late sister” says Lynne. “Danni then noticed the book on the coffee table was about an artist she had only just studied and one that she had based a whole university assignment on.

We had just said what a coincidence that was, so you can imagine my shock when in the bathroom, there was a framed letter bearing the Matamata Piako District Council letterhead! It was a congratulatory message to Gaël and Leigh from Mayor Jan Barnes - obviously I needed to know more!”

for the café, Lynne was told that the owner had married and settled in Paris, but was originally a Barron, from Matamata. “Not a daughter of Gibson and Val” asked Lynne?

“Yes, yes, that’s her parents” said the woman, “and in fact, they’ll be here within the next half hour.” As it happened, the Art’s family had made prior plans so couldn’t stay, but did think it was rather ironic to learn of this local connection while on the other side of the world!”

Just this week, Lynne had the opportunity to meet Matamata Café owners, Gaël and Leigh Soucasse – and funnily enough, right here in Matamata… over a cup of coffee! Lynne was interested to learn that Leigh, after attending Hinuera School, Matamata Intermediate and College, trained to be a teacher. She decided in 2002 to experience her OE, landing a job in London. It was in 2006 while taking a break from teaching, Leigh met Gaël through mutual friends and the rest as they say, is history. The couple married in 2008 in Matamata, returning to Paris where they have now made their home.

Both Gaël, previously working in HR and his best man Gerald had always had a dream to open a café, and it was in 2014, this was realised. “We were trying to come up with a name that was personal and, in some way, told a story” says Leigh. “Matamata totally fitted the bill as, not only was it a key part of our story together, but is also a place Gaël and Gerald loved - and of course, it’s my home. “Over the last few years we have had several locals visit the café in Paris and it’s always such a thrill. In fact I even had the opportunity to reconnect with school and Uni friends from New Zealand that came purely because of our café’s name – I don’t think I could feel more connected to home, from home so coincidentally!”

The idea was to get people out of their comfort zone and take on the challenge to follow the big guys – they called it “The Big Fish Tournament” and over the years since its inception, has become hotly contested!

Challenge Matamata, Plumb.Co (2004) Ltd, Matamata Marine, Matamata Veterinary Services and King Electrical representatives have seen a good number of big fish hit the scales on the Sunday evening weigh-in, and they have also seen years where with poor weather conditions, the top prizes haven’t been struck. “Of course it’s always a thrill to see a marlin or similar large variety fish” says Matamata Marine’s Ken Watkinson, “but there have been some very big snapper or kingfish also take it out over the years. This year as it happens, snapper took out first, second and third prizes.”

In addressing Neil Dalton, Club Patron and his wife Jude, committee and the Matamata Fishing Club members at Sunday’s competition weigh-in, Dave Harris (Challenge Matamata owner/operator), congratulated everyone who took the opportunity of getting out on the water over the weekend, even though for many, it was tough going with high seas and windy conditions. “Sponsoring this competition each year is something we all enjoy” said Dave. “The Matamata Fishing Club is in great shape and it’s fantastic to see the huge emphasis put on whole family enjoyment. Glen and Sharon Clothier from Waharoa Transport sponsor the junior competition alongside us this month and next, so obviously whether it’s mum, dad or the kids, everyone does their best to take out some pretty awesome prizes. A present help in times of trouble

By Mata Waqanituinayau, Peria Assembly of God. In the Bible there is a story of a woman accused of committing adultery (John 8:1-11). In reading the story it troubles me the way religious men, who could bring hope to the woman, instead dragged her using her as a point of argument. There is no indication in the story as what type adultery she committed. As we know from the Bible, there are a few types of adultery, but they all have something in common.

Adultery always involves a woman and a man, and this group of men who brought the woman already came up with a verdict of guilt to the woman

and that she deserved to die by being stoned to death. I ask the question that if the woman is guilty of committing adultery, where is the man that committed the act with her? In the hands of the officials, the woman was helpless and even families and friends could not help her, or come to her defence. She hasn’t been proven guilty in the court of law of whether she is really guilty as they claimed. She was publicly humiliated, dragged and accused in front of the people, and it doesn’t look right for a group of men to be doing that to one helpless woman.

Jesus could see the injustice among them and told them “Let any one of you who is without sin be the first to throw a stone at her”. They all left without any harm to the woman. Jesus said to the woman “Woman, where are they? Has no one condemned you?”

The woman said “no sir” Jesus said “neither do I condemn you, go and sin no more.” I would imagine the feeling that she was able to avoid death in such an environment that is so cruel like that.

story but if you feel you have no way out, I have good news for you. You can avoid death, you can avoid anything that is troubling you right now. Jesus wants to intervene in your situation, and if you allow him to help you, just ask him, He is nearer to you than anyone you know. As the Bible says (Psalms 46:1), God is our refuge and strength, a very present help in times of trouble. Psalms 50:15, Call on me in the day of trouble; I will deliver you.

God’s promise will never fail - it stands forever, and it will make a difference in your life today.

A perfect afternoon of entertainment ocal Rotarians couldn’t have asked for a more perfect day at their annual Concert by the Lake event held on Sunday. With a gorgeous sunny day, a light breeze and close to 600 people in attendance, it could only be described as wonderfully successful!

Huge thanks were extended to Peter and Ineka Thissen, for once again allowing use of their gorgeous property, and to Rotary members and supporters that had worked tirelessly over recent months to ensure the Concert by the Lake didn’t disappoint.

Alongside popular and seasoned regular Jamie McDell, headliner Bic Runga and funky jazz band, Two Many Chiefs provided almost five hours of incredibly talented performances – with concert goers enjoying every second!

“With an extra boost of gate sales, we were delighted with the support” says committee member, Leo Kingston. “There were quite a few people that had left their decision to the last minute waiting to see what the day would bring and obviously, with perfect weather, a fantastic venue and great company, all the right boxes were ticked!”

Matamata Rotary work extremely hard to enhance the Concert by the Lake experience and with everything from acoustic and technical sound improvements, working bees to ensure everything is looking its best, to selection of artists, strive to provide an exceptional afternoon and something fresh for those that continue to support the event.

Hunters and gatherers A great week of men’s bowling T encouraged ow in its third year, the infamous Matamata Club Inc. annual Fish and Game competition is approaching and Club Manager, David Oliver, is encouraging all local hunting and fishing enthusiasts to get out there and have a crack! “We had some great results to celebrate last year” says David, “including one little girl that landed a pretty impressive eel in a local stream that weighed over 4kg! It’s always great to see families heading out together for an enjoyable day and these experiences often ignite a passion that continues as the kids grow up and eventually have their own families. A good example of this is young Sean McKillop who, in 2017, took the opportunity of giving it all he had and returned with significant entries in both the fish and game categories!”

Graham Hornsey also continues to offer support after a weekends fishing by bringing his home kill truck down for the heavier beasts. “For us as a family, it’s never about the prizes” says Graham, “but rather, a great opportunity to get out on the water and do what we love – and that’s fish!” Half the fun in our opinion is getting back to weigh-in and hearing all the tall stories about the one that got away or helping celebrate the success of a fisherman or hunter that went out there, did their best and came home with a trophy species. he Matamata Men’s Combined Bowling Clubs 56th Tournament, played from February 19 to 23, was able to be completed despite the weather forecasts. Forty six teams from all over the North Island competed using the greens at Hinuera, Morrinsville, Morrinsville RSA and Rewa. The first three days were played in four sections and the results of these determined which of the three flights the teams went into on the Thursday. The flights were sudden death leaving the semi-finalists and finalists to battle it out.

Only 11 teams made Flight B, so the semi-final was played on the Thursday at Hinuera and the semi-finalist winners were Dave Selby – Hillcrest, and Kevin

Smith – Hinuera. On Friday play started at Rewa with the semi-finals of Flight C, which were won by John McConnell – Pauanui and Ian McMurchy – Maungatapere, and Flight A, which were won by Bruce Phillips – West End and Gerrard Slattery – Hinuera. All three finals were exciting games to watch and came down to the final ends for the winners. We congratulate all our winners and offer our thanks to all clubs that took part. Unfortunately the final Matamata Men’s Combined Bowling Clubs tournament will be held in 2019. Appreciation is also offered to Matamata Club Inc. and all sponsors that contributed to the tournament.

Pohlen hits gold

his Saturday, March 10, will be a red-letter day for Matamata’s Pohlen Hospital as it marks 50 years since its foundation stone was laid.

It was entirely appropriate that benefactor Joseph (Joe) Pohlen did the honours as, a year earlier, he had donated brewery shares worth $161,224 (around $2million in today’s terms) for the cause – the funding providing the springboard for the campus which has become the envy of many similar-sized towns throughout New Zealand.

Pohlen – as it is simply and popularly known – was built on two acres of farmland donated by farmers Tom and Jean Grant, the project driven by the founding Pohlen Hospital Charitable Trust (1967).

The Trust comprised lawyer Basil Bell, surgeon Frank Hall and accountant John Christophers and, by the time the foundation stone was laid, had grown to include Dr Neil Albert Algar, John (Jack) Douglas Kirkwood and Hugh McCarvill.

Building a hospital from scratch is a monumental business and it is a credit to all concerned that the project took just over two years from the Trust being formed to Pohlen opening its doors for business. Sadly, Joe did not see the Stanley Construction-built hospital reach completion as he died on January 28, 1969, 10 months before its opening; however, he did have the satisfaction of seeing the roof go on. Joe Pohlen would have had no inkling of how his legacy to Matamata would keep on growing and developing to become the comprehensive community care facility it is today.

However, with an astute eye to the future, trustees ensured the original build lent itself to growth and expansion and, this, of course, has proved the case. The main building was planned as a long

building running north from the entry and office with a central service core and having a corridor on each side with bedrooms on the outsides. To the south on the east side was the kitchen and then the operating theatre suite while, in the middle, was the X-ray and laboratory collecting room. There was space to the west for the addition of GP consulting rooms which the Trust hoped to add later.

Today, Pohlen is not only a happy and stimulating permanent home for a number of aged-care residents, but also has District Health Board-funded medical beds for GP referrals. Convalescent and respite care/carer support beds are also available, while an up-to-date four- single roomed maternity annexe, complete with birthing pool, draws mums-to-be from around the district. Pohlen’s refurbished kitchen is also the base for meals on wheels. A number of visiting consultants provide clinics at Pohlen, which also offers some minor procedures such as endoscopy.

As well as nine GPs and related professionals working from the medical centre, the Rawhiti Avenue complex also boasts dental services, laboratory services, pharmacy, x-ray and ultra-sound facilities, and an outdoor rehabilitation and exercise area. Physiotherapy is also available on the compact campus. The six-bed Kaimai Wing was opened in May 2016, further complementing the medical care provided at Pohlen. Joe Pohlen, who loved his town, would be delighted.

Pohlen Hospital’s first 50 years is the subject of a book to be launched in November 2019. The book is being researched and compiled by Sandra Hunter, with the enthusiastic assistance of a cast of hundreds.

Thief robbed of major prize in Matamata Breeders

S

mart local filly She’s A Thief will get the opportunity to chase an even bigger prize this campaign after being narrowly denied a win in her hometown feature last Saturday week.

The well-named She’s A Thief (by Showcasing from Steal) went down the barest of margins in the Group Two $100,000 J. Swap Contractors Matamata Breeders Stakes after an intense tussle with the South Auckland raider, Spanish Whisper, over the final 200 metres. And now she is being set for the Group One $225,000 Courtesy Ford Manawatu Sires’ Produce Stakes (1400m) at Awapuni on March 31.

“She’s just had a quiet week and the Sires’ Produce Stakes looks the best option,” said Pam. “After that she will probably go out for a spell. She’s been up for a while.”

Fresh from a meritorious fourth in the Karaka Million 2YO at Ellerslie, She’s A Thief had to be used up by rider Jake Bayliss to be put on the pace from her outside draw in the Breeders Stakes, and just when she looked likely to succeed, Spanish Whisper, ridden by former Matamata jockey Vinnie Colgan, came back at her hard and the two set down to fight right to the finish. In one of the most thrilling finishes to the big local event, Spanish Whisper got the nod by a mere nose, but a half-stride past the winning post and She’s A Thief was back in front.

Another local, The Real Beal (trained by Stephen Autridge and Jaime Richards) fought on for third, two and three-quarters lengths behind the runner-up, while

Valalie and first-starter Lady Lira, a couple of promising fillies from the stable of top trainers Murray Baker and Andrew Forsman, filled the next two placings.

While She’s A Thief’s senior co-trainer Mike Moroney had already tasted success in the Breeders, having won it twice (with Conquistar and Katana), his training partner Pam Gerrard was chasing her first win in the two-year-old fillies’ feature. “She didn’t win but she tried so hard,” said Pam. “She never gave up and did us proud. She came through it well. Sure she was a bit tired, but after a couple of days she was bouncing around and squealing in her paddock.”

She’s A Thief missed the $62,500 first prizemoney at the Matamata meeting, but she picked up $20,000 for second and took her stake earnings to more than $80,000 in five starts, which have resulted in two wins and three placings.

No matter what She’s A Thief does in her farewell start for the season, she has stamped herself as a leading candidate for the three-year-old fillies races next term.

Mike and Pam are planning to still have a representative in the next big test for the two-year-olds, the Group One $200,000 Sistema Diamond Stakes (1200m) at Ellerslie on Saturday, with Bocce likely to take his place.

his record when eighth of 10 in the Group Three Reid & Harrison Ltd Slipper at Matamata last Saturday week. “He scrambled out of the gates and that was it for him,” said Pam. “He jumped with them then seemed to lose his footing. It may be that he jumped out too quickly. Anyway, from then on he was out the back and never had a race. He has come through it super and all going well he’ll be at Ellerslie for the Group One then he’ll go out for a spell.”

While a local stable came agonisingly close to winning the Matamata Breeders Stakes, nothing could be taken away from the winner, Spanish Whisper, who is trained at Byerley Park by Peter and Dawn Williams. She was having just her third start and earned her place in the field with a debut win at Ellerslie then a second to subsequent Karaka Million 2YO winner Avantage on the same track.

Spanish Whisper, a daughter of Lope De Vega, is owned by her breeders, Daniel Nakhle and his father, Elias, and Darren Brady. The Nakhles established and own the Byerley Park racehorse training centre in Karaka. “We bought her mother, Cutting Remark, from a Patinack Farm dispersal sale in Australia,” recalled Daniel. “She was carrying Spanish Whisper at the time. We then left her over there to be served by Foxwedge and she produced a colt. She then slipped to Makfi last year and she’s in foal to Super Easy.”

An unraced daughter of proven sire Encosta de Lago, Cutting Remark cost $A22,000 and she has now left three winners with Spanish Whisper being the best.

The other two winners have each won three races apiece in Australia.

with Richfield Lass, who flashed home for third behind Super Natural and Snow Reason.

There were celebrations galore on the local front after the other juvenile feature, the Group Three Reid & Harrison Slipper, with the Stephen Autridge and Jamie Richards-trained Sword Of Osman beating the locally owned Thomas Aquinas and the winner’s stablemate Handsome Rebel.

Sword Of Osman, an attractive son of Waikato Stud’s champion sire Savabeel, was bred by Waikato breeder Joan Egan and looks headed for further major honours the way he left his rivals standing in the home straight. Ridden by Opie Bosson, he seemed to slip into another gear when asked to quicken early in the run home and within a twinkling of an eye he was lengths clear and doing it so easily. Bosson let him cruise to the winning post five and three-quarter lengths clear of Thomas Aquinas, who fought on bravely. Both Sword Of Osman and Thomas Aquinas had contested the Karaka Million 2YO with the placings reversed in the $1 million Ellerslie event. Sword Of Osman finished eighth and Thomas Aquinas a couple of lengths ahead in sixth placing.

Sword Of Osman had been brilliant in his only other start, when winning his debut at Awapuni last December by three lengths from Platinum Mamselle, who contested the Matamata Breeders Stakes.

With both his wins on left-handed tracks, Sword Of Osman will get another opportunity to improve his right-handed record when he heads back to Ellerslie this weekend for the Sistema Diamond. “He’s a bit more professional now and I think he’ll be all right,” said Jamie. “He’s an exciting horse.”

ost of us know that feeling where your ears block or need equalizing; especially if you are travelling, or at altitude. Generally it’s easily fixed by pinching your nostrils shut and breathing air outwards or sucking on sweets for example, but sometimes that feeling just doesn’t go away. Local woman Sheryl Ertel knows the feeling all too well and even though she experiences this condition regularly – and has done since childhood, she never expected it would be part of a hearing issue.

“I’ve also suffered tinnitus for a number of years” says Sheryl, “which is a little odd given I’ve never really been subjected to loud noise or trauma which I have always assumed, is the leading cause of this condition. I had noticed that I had to really concentrate when listening – particularly to men with low toned voices, and had learned to almost lip read in situations that were crowded or louder than usual. There were times I guessed what people had said and let me tell you, that’s not always the best!”

Sheryl’s husband Dale was also a bit concerned that an impairment of some level was evident – especially when he could hear the television approaching the couple’s house from outside! “I had asked Sheryl if she had trouble hearing” says Dale, “and it was interesting when we had one of our regular workplace hearing tests, that her results showed a bit of an anomaly. As soon as we learned of this, we contacted the Matamata Hearing Association for further advice.”

Working in conjunction with Triton Hearing, test referrals were organised immediately for Sheryl and she was fitted with a small hearing aid to try for the week. “I was very surprised at just how unobtrusive it was” says Sheryl. “No one even noticed I was wearing it, yet it made such

a huge difference – especially in social or multi conversational situations. I would totally recommend people visit Matamata Hearing Association a lot sooner than I did – they are incredibly helpful and it’s not a big deal at all.”

World Hearing Day has always been acknowledged on March 3 but this year, has been extended into a week of awareness with the intention of raising the public profile to include noise induced hearing loss.

Noise-induced hearing loss is caused by exposure to excessive sound levels. It commonly occurs due to repeated noise exposure over a long period of time (many years) in the workplace, or can arise recreationally from attendance at loud concerts or use of loud power tools at home. A single event such as an explosion can cause noise-induced hearing loss if the intensity is loud enough.

Sound pressure caused by noise destroys the delicate nerve cells in the inner ear that transmit sound messages to the brain. The nerve cells are replaced by scar tissue which does not respond to sound.

The damage is painless but permanent.

Hearing aids can be helpful but cannot restore normal hearing.

Excessive exposure to noise is a known cause of one third of hearing loss in New Zealanders. The higher the noise level and the longer your exposure, the greater the damage done – but the good news is that you can start preventing any further damage now. There are three key things you can do to prevent noise-induced hearing loss: Wear hearing protection when you are exposed to loud noise, limit the amount of time you are exposed to loud noise, and turn down the volume on personal music players - Headphones are preferable to earbuds, which play the music close to your eardrum.

This silent disability is not funded in any way by the government, and during March Matamata Hearing Association, which has become a district “Hearing Hub” due to other smaller association closing down, is running a funding drive. Five records tumbled at athletics. Ollie broke the junior boys shot putt record at prelims on Wednesday and then broke that 2-day old record at finals on Friday, he also smashed the discus record by some 11 metres (a record he held from 2017). Ethan broke the int boys 100m record which was held by three former students’ B Stevens (2011), B Watkins (1996) and B Wallace (1993). B Wallace being Ethans dad!

here wouldn’t be many young teenagers that get the opportunity to perform alongside professional musicians such as Dave Dobbyn, Debbie Harwood, Suzanne Lynch or Peter Urlich, but one young local has, and she absolutely can’t wait!

The drummer in newly established band, LunaTICS, Hannah Allen has played drums for the past four years but has more recently taken up extra lessons to help prepare for the ‘We are One’ concert presented by Play it Strange in conjunction with Newmarket Rotary. “Three of our band members are from the South Island and two of us are in the North Island” says Hannah. “We were selected by the Tourette’s Association of NZ to participate in the concert which aims to create awareness and empathy for those with Tourette’s or Autism. Basically it’s an event celebrating diversity, but also gives us an

opportunity to perform on stage with professional musicians.”

With band practices having to be conducted online for the moment, Hannah has yet to meet the other band members who will be performing their three original songs on April 14. They hope to have their song recorded while in Auckland and individually, are fundraising for the benefit of the band. “I’m hoping to raise money to contribute to travel and recording costs” says Hannah, “so am selling MPDC rubbish bags. They are $10 for five bags and you can text or phone 027 693 6774 if you would like some. They are also listed on the Matamata Buy & Sell page on Facebook.”

The all ages concert will raise funds for the Play It Strange Trust, with contributions to Tourette’s Association of NZ and Autism NZ. Caron Stewart.

Thirty swimmers went to Thames Valley Swimming Champs and were successful defenders of the Combined Points Shield.

Ollie Morton-Farrelly won the junior boys 50m freestyle and you will never guess, he broke the record! We won the final event of the day, the Mixed 6x25m freestyle relay, made up of one girl and one boy from each age group. Ollie Morton Farrelly, Kaysha Bradley, Sam Hills, Mollie Allison,

Teri Bennett and Ben Mason made up the team. Other first placings went to Caleb Lawrence (3), Sam Hills, Ben Mason (2), Stanley Allison, Ben Clow, Haydn Muter, junior boys medley relay team (Allison, Storey, Lawrence, Morton-Farrelly), int boys medley relay team (Clow, PilmoreEvans, Hills, Tompsett), senior girls medley relay team (Williams, Keenan, Bennett, Fountain) and senior boys medley relay team (Allison, Mason, Muter, Jones).

These three beautiful kittens are still waiting for their forever homes.

They've seen all their siblings and friends leave so surely it must be their turn? Two males and one female are available at $60 each or two for $100. This includes desexing, vaccination, flea and worm treatments, and they are litter box trained and vet checked.

Desperately seeking Jack ne local family won’t forget the horrendous weather on the night of Thursday January 25, 2018. It was the night their beloved dog Jack went missing. They believe the thunder and lightning frightened him enough to run off and are devastated that so far, they have had no luck in retrieving him. From the Hinuera/Te Poi area, Jack is described as a friendly and beautiful natured purebred Border Collie and, at the time he went missing, was wearing a red fabric collar. There have been a couple of sightings of a dog resembling Jack around the Taihoa North Road and Te Poi areas around three weeks ago, but nothing since. His family are urging locals to check their properties, especially farm buildings or sheds where Jack may have sought shelter. As you can imagine, even if he has passed away or been injured, his family are desperate to know his whereabouts. Theatrical Thinking arch is upon us and with it the first crop of this year’s shows.

Tauranga Repertory Theatre opens their production of the Peter James dark comedy “The Perfect Murder”, a play about marital disharmony and murder, at 16th avenue Theatre Tauranga.

The Gaslight Theatre Cambridge Repertory Theatre opens the Reginald Rose play “12 Angry Men”, a 1954 play that started out as a teleplay and was subsequently produced for the Theatre.

I saw a production of this drama, about the deliberations and arguments in the jury room as 12 jurymen try to reach a

Rotorua Musical Theatre opens their production of the musical “Mary Poppins” at the Energy Events Centre Rotorua. This is a consortium show using the same set and costumes as the previous productions at Hamilton, Tauranga, and New Plymouth. Some of us from the Tauranga production are going to see the Rotorua show as a

group, Musical Theatre is a very sociable activity like that.

Next up, Te Aroha Theatre opens their production of the Alan Ayckbourn suspense thriller “Snake in the Grass” for a short season, and in Tauranga, Detour Theatre opens their world Premiere production of Devon Williamson’s new comedy “Jailhouse Frocks”.

That should fill March nicely, more about April productions, including the musicals “Into the Woods” and “Catch Me If You Can”, and “Biggles Flies Undone” with our own Dramatic Society, next time.

Fishing Report Hi, I hope all is good with you. Over the weekend the Matamata Fishing Club held another fabulous family filled fishing comp. We had an excellent turnout and congrats to those who took out the prizes.

The March comp was called The Big Fish tournament and was sponsored by an excellent team of Challenge, MVS, Plumb.Co, King Electrical, Matamata Marine and Waharoa Transport. Thank you all for supporting our club and community.

So where top catch the fish or, more to the point, where are they being caught?

The local streams are a joy to fish at the moment. They are a bit tough during the day but after work in the evening, well work a look.

In the Rotorua area local trout guide Glenn Skinner tells me that Lake Tarawera is producing some very nice fish. Glen says the number one method is jigging and he knows of two fish in the past week tipping the scales at 10lb – not that’s a trout. Glenn also made particular mention of the stream mouths that flow into Lake Rotorua – well worth a look he says.

To the south to Lake Taupo region. Good news on the rivers down there. There are some early spawners heading into the rivers and these fresh fish are in great condition. According to locals I’ve talked to , the Tauranga/Taupo is well worth a look.

Ken, local trout guru down there, tells me the Kayak fisho’s fishing around the shore line early in the mornings are doing well.

To the sea fishing and lets have a look out west first. It would be fair to say that the coast has not really slowed down.

Dwayde Pinny, charter boat owner/operator, tells me the fishing has been, and continues to be very good. Dwayde tells me there are snapper being caught in anything from 6-60m of water. Dwayde is getting his best catches however, slightly south of Albatross Point, in about 54m of water. For those looking for a game fish the west is

probably your best bet if you have the boat that can handle it. It would be fair to say for marlin per miles trolled, the west would be up, hands down.

To the Coromandel next. Yep you said it!

Number one all-rounder. When it comes to sheltered waters, fish numbers, convenience, the Coro heads everywhere else off! There are, and have been big tides up there over the past few days. This has made fishing the close in mussel farms very productive. The extra water flow allows you to get the burley flowing and brings the snapper on the bite.

Up around the Mercs the snapper fishing has been a bit patchy. John Ellwood, charter boat skipper, tells me he has had better results to the north around the outside of the Barrier. Out wide there has been some nice marlin caught and John suggests the Mercury Bay area could go well for game fish over the next week or so.

Over in the Bay of Plenty the snapper fishing has been a bit patchy. On the game fish front it has improved a bit and over the next couple of weeks it should get better. Congratulations to some local fishing gurus - Charlene Dalton caught a marlin at Mayor Island, Sue Baker caught one at the Alderman’s and Brett Hodge (Matamata Post & Rails) took out a comp with a very nice 17kg Albacore. Great work and congrats to you all. For those wanting to catch a bit of bait, there are reasonable numbers of bonito over in the Bay at the moment – some in as close as 25m of water.
