i there and welcome to February already! It’s funny talking to a lot of people that like me, can’t quite get their head around the fact that Christmas and New Year holidays are over. I guess with such incredibly hot weather and a couple of public holidays thrown into the mix, it still seems like we’re supposed to be in relax mode! I hope all of you that have had children start back at school – especially those moving on to intermediate and college, had a relatively painless transition and are now enjoying a bit of routine back into your week.

For me it’s been an odd kind of summer compared to other years. My boys of course are all grown up and I couldn’t help thinking last weekend, how quickly this whole adult thing happened. I was at home messing around in my garden (and loving every second of it) and my only company was Zeus the Rottie, Molly the Schnauzer and Ginga the fat cat. One son was tripping around Queenstown, Te Anau, Milford Sound and all the beautiful spots down South ready to finish his trip in Dunedin at the Roger Waters concert, another was in Whitianga rocking out to Alanis Morisette, ELO and Men at Work, and

I almost laughed out loud thinking about how a split second ago, that would have been my young self road tripping with my bestie, having a blast without a care in the world! Its unbelievable when you become a parent, how your own free time gets swallowed up organising life around your children and then boom – it’s over as fast as it began and you realise that all the things you enjoy most, revolve around stuff you remember your own parents doing and - at the same time, thinking they were soooo old and boring! Ahh… she says with a sigh…

Anyway, now completely back into work mode, there’s a lot starting to happen – especially with the arrival of February and of course, the build up to the annual J Swap Contractors Breeders Stakes. It sure is one of the best days of the year as far as locals getting out and enjoying all there is on offer at the Racing club with events and activities for all ages. If you haven’t already, get in touch with the team and book your spot for a corporate table, boot party or one of the fab packages they have available. You won’t want to mess about however, spots sell out

Another thing starting to create a fair bit of hype around the town, is the Matamata College reunion next month. Obviously if you’re planning on going, it’s crucial you get registered. If you haven’t already, jump online or skid down to the college registration office (round by student reception) and get it sorted. There are going to be a bunch of awesome events over the weekend and organisers obviously need numbers to ensure all goes to plan! Check out the advert on page 13 for all you need to know! Keeping our children “bus”safe s a rural school with a large percentage of students traveling daily by bus, Hinuera School is committed to ensuring there is no confusion with safety behaviours and routines amongst their children. “Our students are part of a large, caring and inclusive Hinny family” says principal, Dean McDonnell, “and their safety is paramount. It is crucial that we continually support our families and bus drivers by reinforcing these procedures.”

Annually, at the beginning of each school year, a bus safety module is held with clear instruction and demonstration regarding behaviour before getting on the bus, while on the bus and once exiting the bus. Parents are then actively encouraged to further discuss and practice these safety messages with their children.

Before getting on the bus it is not only important to stand clear of the road and in an easily visible spot, but also to ensure your school bag is over your shoulder so it

can be taken off easily, things like balls or other equipment is in your bag (or a shopping bag for example) and most importantly, that the bus has come to a complete stop before you approach. While on the bus you need to sit facing the front with your back against the seat, your bag under the seat, on the floor or on your knee and ensure you do not put your hands or any other body part out the window. Eating and drinking on the bus is not allowed and quiet “classroom” voices should be used.

Before you get up to exit the bus, it must be completely stationary.

After exiting the school bus, you must wait in a safe place for it to leave. If there is a need to cross the road, walk to the back and wait for the bus to drive far enough away for you to see clearly both ways before crossing. Look and listen carefully before crossing and, if you are not sure – WAIT! “Good behaviour on the bus is very im-

portant to us” says Dean. “We do all sorts of things to encourage this, but we also have appropriate actions to discourage bad behaviour. Initially this might be a word of warning from a teacher, but if the behaviour is particularly poor, parents will have a bus behaviour notification letter sent home. If a child receives three letters in a year they are not able to travel on the bus for a week, and any further trouble would lead to longer periods off the bus, perhaps even permanently. The Matamata District Bus Policy also reserves the right for principals to go straight to the step of removing students from the bus for short periods or permanently if there are strong grounds for this (usually the safety of the bus run or other students). Please be aware of these issues and make sure your children know that they need to behave appropriately on the buses.”

Thanks to bus driver Bruce Snook, students of Hinuera School were able to practice safe procedures when entering, riding and exiting the bus. It is extremely important too, for motorists to remember the lawful speed when passing a bus is 20km/hr and that children especially, can be unpredictable.

It’s such a neat way to show the public what talent is around and in fact, we signed up over a dozen new members!

She has just returned from competing in Tamworth, Australia where she was runner up in the Coke Cola Battle of the new artist’s competition so it was really something special to have her in attendance.” Matamata Country Music Club has their next club day on March 18 at the Matamata Primary School hall from 1pm to 4.30pm. Everyone is welcome and entry is $5 for non-members or $3 for members which includes afternoon tea. Why not go along and check it out!

A warm and welcoming change of pace

atamata College has welcomed six new teachers this year that bring a wealth of experience from all corners of the world. “We are extremely excited to welcome them to the team” says principal, Alan Munro, “especially given that, as most people are aware, there is a shortage of teachers around the country.

These teachers have chosen to join our school and bring a fantastic variety of skills and experience which will be of great benefit to our students.”

Teaching history, social studies and an English class, Yasmin recently taught in London and is now enjoying the more personal and interactive style of teaching at Matamata College. “With 18 classes and pre-planned curriculum lessons while in London, it’s fantastic to have the opportunity to be more self-directed with just six classes – teaching is so much more rewarding when you get to know your students and have the opportunity to find and encourage their strengths.

Paul, a self-confessed kiwi DIY’er, is thoroughly enjoying being “back at the bench” teaching woodwork and design visual communication (formally Tech Drawing!).

Although sometimes retired, he has taught for a number of years but also enjoyed various occupations including truck driving and line haul driving.

Taking on her very first teaching position, Larah-Jane is excited about her career at Matamata College and is overwhelmed at how welcoming and warm her new colleagues and community have been. “It’s a wonderful environment and fantastic place to be” she says. Larah-Jane is teaching geography and social studies.

For Matthew, starting the year at Matamata College as acting English Head of Learning, is like coming home given he taught at the school eight years ago. These amazing days

By Father Leonard C. Danvers Holy Angels Matamata Summer days bring people outdoors.

Visits to the beach or lake, bike riding, tennis, bush walks, cricket, skate boarding, golf and a variety of other pursuits exercise muscles and fill our lungs with fresh air. Gardeners rise early to weed, plant, prune and water before the heat of the day. Summer evenings mean barbecues and outdoor eating.

This special time of the year refreshes our bodies and spirits through rest and recreation. Its good to slow down and sense the pulse of creation. The world throbs with life around us, and within us.

Feel a gentle breeze or a chill wind, searing sunshine or a balmy night – touch, smell, watch. Let go of the stress

and tension within, and drink in the warmth or the freshness around you. As this amazing world gives life and growth to kauri, kiwi and kumara. It also gently holds us and renews us.

Think of people who cannot get outside these summer days. They miss out on creation’s refreshing gifts. Would the sick heal more quickly with outdoor walks as well as hospital wards? Would prisoners come to a change of heart with more immersion in creation and less in prison cells? Do office workers perform better with open windows and access to grass than in high rise buildings? We need access to creation and its extraordinary gifts to be refreshed.

Many people are aware of God when they watch a golden sunset or hear the morning song of a tui. The book of Genesis speaks of the Spirit of God hovering over the earth from its earliest moments. An artistic description of creation at work is found in the Book of Sirach (Ecclesiasticus 42:15-43:33) Hopefully you’ve praised God as you surfed a wave or sipped a wine in the cool of an evening. Hopefully you chat with God as you fly a kite, pick tomatoes from your garden or enjoy a morning walk.

This amazing world, which refreshes our bodies and our spirits because it immerses us in God’s work, is fragile. We humans polluting its environment as we

pump poisonous gases into its air, or pollute our waterways. In the process we are undermining our own health and safety. People of faith give praise to the Creator by showing respect and care for the Creator’s gift.

If we are feeling better for summer days, because we’ve been receiving life from our wonderful world and its Creator, let’s give our world something in return. Let’s do something to care for our environment, it may be planting a tree or walking a short trip instead of driving.

To glorify the Lord as much as we can means both to enjoy the gifts of the Creator, and to care for our world as God’s sacred work.

Personality in pencil or local woman Kitty Benaim, a happy life is about finding your strength and going with it. She laughs when she says she pretty much flopped at school academically so when the time came to apply herself to some sort of career, it was her creative flair that seemed to tick all the boxes.

“I never really saw myself as an artist” says Kitty, “but with an interest in different artistic mediums, I decided on a contemporary craft degree once I had finished high school. I was living in England at the time and learning techniques from glasswork to ceramics, and metalwork to sculpting, I got a pretty good grounding across the board. I didn’t have an obvious talent when it came to life drawing but I guess, through sketching plans and ideas

for various projects, scale and authenticity sort of naturally developed.”

Five years ago, Kitty migrated to New Zealand and with a good friend having a particular love for animals - in particular, a hand reared Pukeko, she was inspired to have a crack at creating a really special gift – a pencil drawing of the beloved bird.

“Once I was finished, I was actually quite surprised” laughs Kitty. “It turned out so much better than I had imagined and I realised that drawing from a photograph was something that not only came quite easily, but was something I really enjoyed.

I guess with such a special sentiment, an unexplained discipline sort of kicked in with the need to get it just right!”

friend’s dog, word seemed to ‘get around’ and before she knew it, Kitty had been commissioned to draw dogs, cats and even horses. “There is something truly special about people’s animals” she says. “Some of my clients had lost a pet and wanted a framed memory of them – others just loved the idea of a hand drawn portrait.

Everyone’s reasons are different of course, but being able to put personality into permanent pencil was something I very quickly became passionate about.”

After mastering animals, Kitty decided to have a go at drawing people using her young daughter Zoe as her guinea pig so to speak! “It was an interesting development with my art” says Kitty. “I thought being my own child, I would be too close to objectively draw her portrait, yet after capturing the beautiful expression in her eyes, the rest just seemed to flow. It sounds kind of cheesy but as they say, the eyes really

are the window of the soul and I think once you capture that emotive side of your subject, you seem to get into the zone and draw what you feel more than simply what you see.”

Although Kitty in recent weeks has concentrated more on home renovation and ‘nesting’ in preparation for the arrival of her second child, she is more than happy to take enquiry about commission work – even though turn around might be a little slower in the immediate future! “Obviously I can’t commit to tight deadlines for now” she says, “but drawing is my release and I love nothing more than to immerse myself in a project as time allows. e arrived in matamata last summer and found our way to Rapurapu Reserve when we were looking for somewhere new to give our dogs a change of scenery. We thought it was a great spot, especially when we had the added bonus of a swim, but we were disappointed to see all the rubbish left lying around.

It is even hotter this year and we have again taken the dogs for a swim only to find that some kind person had left their docked lambs tails as a calling card, which we referred to Council. This was not needed in a public reserve. The next time we went we saw the bollards and were glad to see that someone was at last taking an interest.

We would be only too happy to add our services to a working bee to help beautify this lovely spot but I have one suggestion to make. There is no enclosed dog exercise area in Matamata and it would be lovely if an area could be fully enclosed so that dog people could also enjoy this spot without worrying or endangering other users. Not all dogs are reliable in an unfenced area!

I trust that the working bee will be advised with plenty of time for interested people to build their help into their busy schedules, and that a portaloo or similar can be located there. We have seen several people using the bushes as a toilet - not good if there are young children around.

Families invited to step up

ith the incredibly warm evenings of late, there’s a group of Matamata College students that have crossed everything in the hope of the fine weather holding out for at least another three weeks. The Night Owl Cinema event held in conjunction with the school had been organised for September last year but, due to inclement weather, had to be postponed.

Eighteen Matamata College Art and DVC (Design Visual Communication) students will be traveling to London, Paris, Rome and Hong Kong for a once in a lifetime experience to see timeless architecture, art galleries, product design and film production accompanied by their teacher, Jolene Rogerson. Of course since the trip was first mooted, and realising there would be significant funding required, interested students were almost immediately dreaming up ideas that would not only help with ex-

penses, but provide something a bit different for locals and their families.

“We decided on a real family event that could offer a neat atmosphere and sort of carnival feel” says Jesse Jordan. “It’s awesome to have had loads of support from some really talented musicians, dancers and even drama performances. So right from when we start at 5.30pm, all ages will be catered for and really well entertained.”

As well as stage performers, everything

from face painting to food, and a bouncy castle to coffee will be available before the “Step up Revolution” movie screens at dusk. “I think one of the really neat things especially for families, will be laying out the blankets or beanbags and pillows and settling back on the field to watch a great movie in the dark” says Caleb Schwabauer.

“It’s something quite unique and with Step Up Revolution being a movie that suits all ages, we have no doubt it will be a night to Caron Stewart. remember.”

Quite a number of former teachers will be there and will enjoy meeting former pupils. Special disability/mobility parking areas have been arranged. The main one is off the Station Road entry to the area behind the college buildings where the marquees will be set up for all the main events. Signs will give directions to the mobility parking area as close to the entrance to the marquees as possible.

The second one is off Firth Street entered through the driveway by the school house and there will be parking around on the tar seal around behind the bus sheds.

This will give access to the side entry for the main administration block where displays will be set up. No other guests may use this. Wheel chairs will be available courtesy of Pohlen Hospital.

Organic growth at the lake!

erennial crowd favourite Jamie McDell is returning to Matamata for Rotary’s Concert by the Lake with new music that has been borne out of spending time in Nashville, reinventing her sound.

Following last year’s Matamata concert, Jamie flew to the States, looking to find inspiration and soon Kiwi audiences will get to hear the result of that trip – 12 new songs set to be released later this year.

While in Nashville, Jamie met Australian producer Nash Chambers and found his outlook on the music industry was very similar to her own. Quickly they decided to record an album with Nash as the producer and she returned to the States last September to lay down the tracks. “Nash is very similar to me in that we put song-writing and storytelling first and then the production is not overcooked,” Jamie explains. “We recorded 12 songs in two days which was pretty intense.”

For this year’s Rotary Matamata Concert by the Lake, Jamie will be sharing the stage with Two Many Chiefs who are returning after a successful debut in 2017 while the show will be headlined by New Zealand music icon and Hall of Famer Bic Runga.

Jamie is excited to be performing with Bic and this event will be the first time the two Kiwi songstresses have appeared on the same billing. “I love coming back to Matamata each year,” Jamie says. “It pushes me to come up with something new each time and I am so excited to have Bic Runga on the bill too – she is a voice of my childhood that I grew up listening to. She is a Kiwi legend and an inspiration for me.”

Jamie says her own musical odyssey to Nashville turned out to be enlightening in a number of ways which she has been able to translate into her new body of work. “These new songs are quite raw. It is probably the closest thing I would have done to a live

record. I have probably been more honest than I have ever been before and I have really taken a focus on telling a good story,” Jamie says. “I think the thing I noticed about a lot of the musicians in Nashville was that you didn’t necessarily have to be a great singer or guitar player but if your story was interesting enough that was what cut through and excited an audience.” Jamie says the experience has allowed her to get back writing with her heart without worrying about outside influences. “Really the new music is a lot of very straight-up and to the point songs about true life experiences,” she says.

Jamie is the only artist to have performed at all three previous Concert by the Lake shows and last year she was recognised with a special award from Rotary Matamata for what she has added to the fundraiser. “Concert by the Lake is a really special and unique event,” Jamie says. “There is really nowhere else that you get to perform on a floating pontoon on a lake so being able to be in that sort of environment as an artist is really special. I also really enjoy the community feel of Matamata – I love the audience and everyone is there to have a good time and enjoy the music. It is great that there is a group of people (from Rotary Matamata) who are passionate about putting on these sorts of music events to bring the community together.”

As an artist, Jamie says the event should continue to grow naturally. “The fact that we are on our fourth year now has shown how much it has developed organically and obviously getting a household name like Bic Runga involved this year means it can only get bigger from here. The event has everything going for it – a great location and music with a beautiful vibe from the audience – I am really looking forward to coming back again,” Jamie says.

Whisper features at the base ith a passion for all things artistic and creative, Matamata’s Robert Eagle introduced Whisper Art & Object in September 2014. The initial idea was to provide a gallery environment where people had the opportunity not only to view a unique range of artworks by leading New Zealand artists, but also encourage those with talent to take their skill to the next level.

“We are very fortunate to have an active and encouraging local art society” says Robert. “They play a pivotal role with emerging artists, right through to the more advanced providing a creative gateway for those that wish to be part of a group of likeminded people sharing ideas and techniques etc. A gallery where visitors could view various works at their leisure however, was definitely lacking. Events such as the annual Matamata Art Exhibition have always been an excellent platform for showing local talent of course, but with venue expenses, limited booking or availability and the need for constant volunteers to man these events, featuring noted regional and national artists and sculptors has been near on impossible. My partner Sandra and I decided a dedicated gallery that could be open during the weekend

and by appointment would be an excellent idea.”

Very quickly attracting all kinds of visitors, Whisper Art & Object has operated successfully for the past three years hosting many exhibitions and featuring everything from renowned painters to artists creating cast and blown glass, pottery, ceramics, unique bronze works, limited edition prints and a range of original indoor and outdoor sculptures. Robert thoroughly enjoyed the opportunity of talking to people about their styles, techniques and talents – especially when he was able to draw in various contacts around the country to further enhance their personal journey within the world of art. “I guess, even with over 20 years of experience behind me, being able to foster the growth of an artist or help them explore their next step has always been my passion and focus” says Robert. “It’s easy to become completely immersed in identifying talent and doing all you can to further it – particularly when someone may have no idea where to start.”

Recently, with the sale of their Burwood Road property, Robert and Sandra had the daunting prospect of having to shut shop and temporarily close the gallery. Come the 11th hour however, an opportunity

was presented that ticked all the boxes and, incredibly, offered more scope than previously available! “My good friends Tony Hartigan and Emma Gaunt opened their Matamata Flooring Design franchise at The Base on Rawhiti Ave and invited me to share their space” says Robert, “and as it happened, it has been an excellent marriage of creativity and, with someone onsite daily from Monday to Saturday, it

means people looking to have a browse around can do so whenever suits them best. Of course I am always available by appointment outside business hours if and when required also.”

Move it or lose it at your own pace! fter her husband Allan passed away 40 years ago, Charmaine Donaldson was left with an awful lot of questions that for years remained unanswered.

The most haunting one was how a relatively fit young father could have such a serious heart condition that saw him taken from his wife and three children that at the time were aged just six, 13 and 16 years of age. “It was an awful shock” says Charmaine, “and apart from later finding out that he had felt a little breathless in the days prior, I had absolutely no idea there were any issues with Allan’s heart, or his overall health. Access to information and education wasn’t anywhere near as available back then so basically, you had no choice but to accept what had happened and carry on the best way you could.”

Around 20 years ago, after resigning from a respiratory group she was involved in, Charmaine came across an article appealing for people that might be interested in starting a group in the area affiliated with the Heart Foundation. She had always wanted to know more about heart health and even though a couple of decades had almost passed, questions about her husband’s massive coronary still lingered. “I made contact with the Hamilton based heart health advocate who was extremely receptive and encouraging” says Charmaine. “I hadn’t personally experienced any issues with heart related illness but through Allan, had an empathy with those that had – or potentially could have. I have also always been extremely motivated to encourage good health through exercise so began a weekly group focussing on movement and activity. At that point there were around 10 members who became quite enthusiastic about improving their lifestyle and personal health.”

with Charmaine coordinating the group that had grown considerably since its inception. “Today we have around 40 members” she says, “which includes people with other issues such as diabetes or weight related issues – but also those who come along simply to enjoy the friendship and camaraderie, weekly exercise classes or periodic guest speakers. Classes are designed to cater for all ages and capabilities whether they are done standing or from a chair. Our focus is on continued movement with simple exercises designed for everyone.”

For Janice King, current president of HeartFit Matamata, her inspiration like Charmaine, came initially because of her husband Carl who suffered a minor stroke.

“My father had died after having a massive

heart attack” she says, “and although thankfully, Carl almost completely recovered, learning more about heart health became increasingly important to us both. He really enjoys the exercises since joining the group and has incorporated exercise into his daily routine.”

Always welcoming interested locals or new members, Charmaine and Janice encourage anyone over 60 to pop along to the Union Parish hall on a Thursday morning from 10.30am to 11.30am. “There is absolutely no need to feel intimidated” says Janice. “We will welcome you – and make you feel welcome and I promise you, there are no exercises beyond your capability! We’re all here to ensure we enjoy our lives the best way we can and move it before we lose it!”

Generation Homes Matamata’s financial pledge will help advance the rollout of Plunket’s parent education programmes in the area. Its contribution of more than $6,000 will positively impact the level of care babies and toddlers aged two years and under receive.

Spinnin’ a line with Matamata Fishing Club Leyland Mangi, fishing off the dam at Arapuni caught two rainbows and three brown trout including this fulla that weighed in at 2.065kg. He says trout fishing in the area is really starting to pick up with all the smelt.

ou could certainly say it was a mixed bag as far as local fisho’s were concerned over the weekend with the first Matamata Fishing Club tournament for 2018.

Those around Whangamata especially, agree there was definitely more people feeding the fish than catching them with swells commonly several metres high and extremely rough seas.

Proof was in the pudding as they say with around 580 entrants in the annual Nauti Girls competition hosted by the Whangamata Ocean Sports Club weighing in less than 500 fish. Thankfully not all locals fared quite so badly with some saying it was an absolute cracker of a weekend, particularly around the Coromandel region. Huge thanks this month go to the club’s valued February sponsors Begovich Builders, Sportsworld, Splice Construction, the Holmes family and Matamata Butchery. Four and a half year old Saxon Butcher was pretty proud of his haul which included a couple of good sized dinner snapper.

It was a family affair for the Bell’s with the kids outshining their parents. Pictured are Corey, Xavier and Charlotte, after fishing off the Bennett family’s boat, Lucy Rae at Te Kuma Harbour.

Fishing by the barge, they reckon fishing was “awesome” even if they did have to be on the water by 4.30am!

Very pleased with himself, Saxon’s little brother Chase Butcher, caught his very first fish and couldn’t wait to show it off! At almost two years old, I reckon the weighmaster had his work cut out there! Good job Chase.

This super smoochy female cat is only a year old and since arriving with her kittens, is now ready to find her own family.

She loves attention, pats and cuddles, gets along with other cats and is waiting patiently for a family to give her a second chance.

y first theatre column for the year and I have already seen three shows. These were all youth productions performed by young members of the performing arts groups and what excellent shows they were.

“Jack and the Beanstalk” at Tauranga Repertory Theatre was a traditional Pantomime complete with a panto cow and a dame, with key roles played by adults, and the rest of the cast members of the youth theatre. “Aladdin” at Musikmakers in Hamilton was the junior Disney production with all the famous Disney tunes and a recorded backing track. This was a very slick production with some very polished performances.

www.sceneonline.co.nz To see Tauranga Musical Theatre’s “The Wizard of Oz” you had to walk up the yellow brick road, the entrance drive to the Theatre being painted yellow. Once inside I was treated to another excellent production featuring some of the younger cast members from last year’s “Mary Poppins”. With some very polished dance moves, a recorded backing track, and excellent performances this show like the others thoroughly deserved the full houses they enjoyed.

February is a fairly quiet month for theatre though Tauranga open air theatre are putting on “The Importance of being Ernest” at “The Elms”. March is looking very busy though with at least

half a dozen productions due on stage, including the next production of “Mary Poppins” this time at Rotorua Musical Theatre. Interestingly the actress who played Mrs Banks in the Tauranga Musical Theatre production is playing Mary Poppins in the Rotorua production.

Some performers just can’t get enough, though she tells me that the Rotorua production is quite different to the Tauranga one. Closer to home Matamata Dramatic are auditioning “Biggles Flies Undone” for a late April production, and Matamata Musical Theatre are auditioning “Dusty the Original Pop Diva”, their replacement for the cancelled “Chicago”, for a May production.

i, wow what a great bit of rain we’ve had over the past week. No matter whether you’re farming or just want to wet the garden it was very nice. The rain has had a positive effect on the trout fishing as well, a bit more water and colour is always good. Head out in the evening is the thing to do, there are plenty of trout rising and make great targets with the dry flies or imitive spinners.

In the Rotorua area the mouths of the streams that run into Lake Rotorua are the place to head. Glen Skinner who is a well-known trout guide tells me there are heaps of fish lined up there at the moment.

Out on the lakes the fish are down quite deep so get out the jigging gear or the lead line. The pick of the lakes at the moment seems to be Rotoiti with the next best Tarawera and Okataina.

www.sceneonline.co.nz To the south a bit to Taupo. Heavy rain there during the week has really given the rivers and streams a flush out. This of course is a good thing and they should be a joy to fish over the next few days. My man down there, local fishing guide etc, tells me there are some very nice browns in the rivers at the moment and well worth a venture down there. Out on the lake once again it’s about the depth so get out the deep trolling gear or the jog rod.

Over to the west to the sea and the charter boys at Kawhia say January was one of the best they can remember. Dwayde also thinks this will continue into February. The snapper are being caught in and around the 45m mark. The big news out west at the moment is the good numbers of marlin. There has been more per hour of trolling caught out there than anywhere in the country. Last week there was a magnificent Striped Marlin

caught out the back of the 124. It tipped the scales at 187kg, now that’s a stripey!

Up to the Coromandel. This is another area that has fished quite well all the way through the summer. Darryll from Snapper Safaris tells me he has had the odd mixed day but generally his crews have all gone home with a good feed. There has been big tides up there in the past few days and that has allowed him to fish some of the close-in mussel farms with a bit more current running through them. He says the farms just around the corner from Te Kumau boat ramp have been good.

Over in the Mercury Bay area John Ellwood tells me of some very good snapper fishing off The Sisters out from Mercury Cove. Several of them up near that magical 20lb mark. Out wide there have been a few Marlin about but the numbers are not high yet. However the best two months are February and March so

get those lures and hooks ready. For those wanting to get some bait stocks for the freezer there are good numbers of skippies out there right from Red Merc all the way down to Motiti. Most of them are in the 70 to 100m depth.

Congratulations to all the anglers in the Matamata Fishing Club competition, some very nice fish weighed in and awesome prizes were won.
