i and welcome to this issue of Scene. It’s been a wonderful fortnight for many locals and their families, especially those that reunited with old friends and acquaintances at various events during the Matamata College centenary weekend.

Alongside Principal Alan Munro, the organising committee and Event Manager, Darlene Thomas, did an outstanding job of coordinating an event that will no doubt be talked about and remembered for many years to come. There were an awful lot of people responsible for its success of course, but one person that probably got little, or at least, very quiet recognition, was the school caretaker and his assistants. Fine weather obviously contributed to the overall look of the school but I have to say, everything really looked amazing. Even the plaque on the front gate looked like it had been freshened up! I also overheard several past students acknowledge how nice the school environment was – and in fact, admit that while attending the school, they hadn’t really appreciated that!

With the reunion now done and dusted, I hope you have had the opportunity to view Steve and Alex May’s photos online – they’re awesome and really reflect the mood of the entire event. For those of you that don’t have computer access, enjoy a selection of them on pages 10 and 11.

So looking ahead, obviously a really significant occasion is Anzac Day which will be acknowledged in just three weeks. I don’t think there would be any form of media in the country that doesn’t promote this as one of New Zealand’s most important public holidays – and rightly so. April 25th remembers the sacrifices of those who died, those who were injured and

those who lost loved ones. We also on this day, remember and acknowledge those who devoted so many years of their lives after wars were over, looking after relatives and friends whose wartime experiences left them permanently sick, disabled, or psychologically damaged. The suffering and the cost of war to individual men and women can never be reversed, and it must never be forgotten.

The actual reality of this significant event hit me personally quite some years ago and sadly, I was never able to share that with the one that mattered most. It was my grandfather’s funeral and being a very small family, we didn’t have enough pallbearers. I contacted the Matamata RSA and they were only too happy to supply a ‘stand in’ family - six returned servicemen.

My grandfather (Pop) had the honour of the New Zealand flag laid over his coffin and of course, a wreath pinned with poppies in pride of place on top. As these men

carried Pop to the hearse, a seventh returned serviceman played the Last Post by bugle and all of a sudden I realized that these men, all eight of them as frail and old as they had become, were once fine young strapping lads who defended our country, our freedom and our people. It was an emotional time for so many reasons, and as those men saluted him and laid their poppy, I cried for my Pop - for another one of our heroes who obviously had so many stories about the years he endured and yet, had always remained silent. I wish I could have told him how much he, particularly at that moment, really mattered not just as my Pop, but as a New Zealand and Australian hero. I have always thought of Anzac day as ‘Pop’s day’ since.

Well I guess on that note, that’s about me so be good, be kind and be careful and until next time, I’ll see you round like a poppy wreath.

Kiwanis provide relief for Pohlen

fter learning of a specialised need at Pohlen Hospital, members of the Kiwanis Club of Matamata were pleased to present Pohlen Foundation Administrator Charlene Conner and Pohlen Clinical Nurse Manager, Loraine Jecentho with the funds to purchase an Aeria 5 dynamic alternating mattress overlay system. Although this sounds extremely high tech, in layman’s terms the mattress is simply a collection of cells that cyclically inflate and deflate in an alternating pattern. It is used to prevent and treat skin breakdown and pressure injuries in

high need patients.

“The cyclic alternation helps redistribute pressure, maintaining and stimulating the flow of blood and lymphatic fluids through the tissue to provide essential oxygen and remove metabolic waste products” says Clinical Nurse Manager, Loraine Jecentho.

“Pressure points can be extremely painful for our elderly or frail patients that are laying down for prolonged periods. Having the technology of these specialised mattresses means a lot less discomfort and of course, much happier patients and residents.”

Extremely appreciative of the donation, Pohlen Foundation Fundraising Administrator Charlene Conner offers her thanks once again to the Kiwanis service group. “I believe this is about the 11th consecutive year they have contributed to Pohlen” says Charlene. “Obviously being a community owned asset that caters from the cradle to the grave, we are constantly striving to exceed expectation of the level of care provided within our community. We are extremely fortunate to be often thought of as the local charity of choice.”

Sharing the message of hope with New Zealand kids xplaining that he was bullied at school and had low selfesteem, (possibly due to his “really” big head he joked), had students of Firth School giggling – not in an unkind way, but because of the humorous, interactive and very real way Mike King presented his address as part of the ‘I am Hope’ tour last Tuesday.

Having set off on March 5 at Bluff, Mike and his team will be visiting 48 towns and delivering 70 talks over a period of 25 days.

They will be riding what can only be described as works of art delivering a message of hope to schools up and down the country finishing at Cape Reinga this Friday.

As one of the artists who decorated the Suzuki 50cc scooters, Lester Hall from Kerikeri has joined the ‘I am Hope’ crew on the entire journey. “Mike contacted me after seeing my art” says Lester, “and when he told me what he was thinking of doing, I was right behind the idea. What we see and hear is what we think, and what we think is what we speak – so, with a theme of unity, hope and aroha (love), I was

proud to paint his scooter and become part of the support crew travelling with, and helping them deliver the program to youth around the country.” Three scooter riders including Mike, his right hand man and member of the Key to Life Trust, Dallas Gopi, and a friend and neighbour Steve Grey travelled the entire trip from Bluff to Cape Reinga, with several others joining for portions of the trip.

Not only doing their best to change the way people feel, think, talk and behave in relation to mental health, the I am Hope tour’s mission is to create a societal change in attitudes towards it.

“We are encouraging openness and listening without judgement” says Mike. “So, obviously in age appropriate context, aim to shed the stigma around youth suicide and empower others to connect with those who are struggling. We have to change attitudes and show our youth it’s OK to feel down, lonely and sad, but that there’s a light at the end of tunnel - there is hope.”

cesses such as anxious thoughts or the negative “inner voice” we all experience at times, Mike had students engaged and responsive throughout this address. “There are ways we can practice dealing with our feelings” he said to the students. “For example; if I feel I am about to say something angry or mean, I tap my lips and walk away. Then, by talking to people I trust, I can open up and connect emotionally.”

Having had long-standing depression and addiction issues personally, Mike has become an outspoken advocate for change regarding mental health. He believes young people especially only want two things – to be loved, and to have their thoughts and opinions valued by significant people in their lives. “They want, and need, to know they matter” he says. “It is essential we start to be real and honest with our kids about our own struggles, and stop teaching them to keep secrets. We expect our kids to open up to us about things that are troubling them, but do we model that behaviour?”

An incredible honour for local teacher hen you realise personal aspirations and are confident you have the skills, passion and desire to attain them, the only tick remaining is to find the perfect place you’ll fit. For senior teacher Debbie Currie, there was absolutely no question that Matamata Intermediate School was that place.

“I can unreservedly say that our school strives to provide challenging, relevant, engaging and future focussed education” says Debbie. “Year 7 and 8 students are unique in that they are at a wonderful age to experience and try new things with very specific social and emotional needs. It is

extremely rewarding knowing that, at such a formative time of their transition to becoming young adults, our motto of ‘Inspired learners empowered to succeed’ is setting them up to be the best version of themselves possible. I thoroughly enjoy teaching this age group.”

Having taught locally for almost two decades, it was ironic that Debbie cemented her decision to become a principal just prior to the resignation of Matamata Intermediate School’s, Daryl Gibbs. “Under Daryl’s leadership, with the support of a fantastic board of trustees and team of staff and supporters, the school’s strategic

direction really is strengthening relationships between students, teachers, family and whanau, and our community.”

When the principal’s role recently became available Debbie had no hesitation in putting herself forward for the position.

“With my husband Brentleigh and our daughters Aleisha (Y12) and Anna (Y8) as immersed and invested in this community as I am, there was no question of just how proud I would be to be considered” she says. “Of course after a thorough application process, I was absolutely ecstatic to hear from BoT Chair, Tracy Brown that I had been successful. It is such an incredible honour to be appointed to lead a school I am so proud of and of course, be fully supported by a team of people I respect and admire.

Too, the reaction of the kids has been just so positive and its neat to feel immediately accepted and appreciated.”

Although her new role will predominately finding solutions to all number of duties, Debbie laughs when she says it’s unlikely she’ll be able to keep her nose completely out of the classroom! “I’m so humbled and honoured to have taken on this new role” she says, “but I doubt I’ll ever lose that personal approach with the kids. Teaching has always been my passion and I genuinely care about all our student’s progress and success. College sports round-up n extremely busy fortnight for sport at the College. Let’s start with equestrian. Six girls attended Thames Valley Show Jumping, where Sarah West won the total points for her ring. Nicole Weatherly, Alannah Reid and Faith Spice also had good results and the team placed second overall. At the Waikato Secondary Schools show jumping the girls had a fantastic day, riding well and being super supportive of each other.

As a team they finished fifth overall which is a great result considering there were 125 riders competing and our girls were one rider down. Sarah West and Nicole Weatherly had the best individual performances.

A small group of athletes attended the Waikato Bay of Plenty Athletics Champs at the Tauranga Domain. Ethan Wallace and Ollie Morton-Farrelly had more fabulous results. Ethan placing 1st in the 200m final and 2nd in the 100m final; Ollie took out 1st in both the discus and shotput and 2nd

in the 100m final. Rochelle Lind place 2nd in the javelin; Khan Todd, 2nd in 1500m and 3rd in the 800m; Harrison Fountain 3rd in the 1500m. These athletes have qualified for a place in the WBOP team to attend North Island Secondary Schools Athletic Champs coming up in April.

We took a team to the Waikato Regional Ki-o-rahi Tournament, they were a real mix of youth and experience. After suffering a major loss in the first round to Rakaumangamanga the team pulled together and improved in each of the next three games.

The MotoX team competed in competition in Rotorua. Results as follows: Liam Fernyhough 25th place in the 15-18 250f class. This was the first time Liam had ridden his new bike in the bigger class. Considering the class was full of national title riders this was a great effort from Liam.

Dylan Story 11th place in the 13-16 85cc class. This was the first time Dylan has ridden for the school team and he showed some real talent. Again, another big class

with some national title holders in it. Ollie Fernyhough 20th and Brooke Daisley 23rd place in the Novice 85cc class. This was their first ride for the college as Yr9 students and the first time on a large National MX track. Both boys showed improved confidence in each of their three races and were both tired at the end of the day.

Our senior girls volleyball team competed at the NZSS Volleyball Champs over five days at Stadium Manawatu in Palmerston North. The girls were plagued by injury and illness but showed true Matamata College spirit to finish the week with some very close matches against big volleyball schools.

Too early for rugby you say? Not for Canadians! We recently hosted Lord Byng College and West Vancouver High School.

The rugby games went well however, the special part of these tours was our school community opening their homes to take billets, giving the boys a real ‘kiwi’ experience.

What is the meaning of Easter?

Easter is the day when we celebrate Jesus Christ rising from the dead. Jesus is the son of God and heroically gave his life to die for our sins. On the third day after he died - the day we now celebrate as Easter Sunday - his friends went to his grave, and found that he had risen from the dead. They saw an angel who told them, "Don't be afraid!

I know you are looking for Jesus, who was crucified. He isn't here! He has been raised from the dead, just as he said it would happen."

Jesus rose from the dead on Easter Sunday; now he offers to you the gift of eternal life and forgiveness of sins.

This is the true story of Easter, and how it can change your life God Loves You! The Bible says, "God so loved the world that he gave his one and only son, that whoever believes in him shall not perish, but have eternal life". The problem is that all of us have done, said or thought things that are wrong. This is called sin, and our sins have separated us from God. The Bible says “All have sinned and fall short of the glory of God.” God is perfect and holy, and our sins separate us from God forever. The Bible says “The wages of sin is death.”

The good news is that, about 2,000

years ago, God sent his only son Jesus Christ to die for our sins. Jesus is the son of God. He lived a sinless life and then died on the cross to pay the penalty for our sins. “God demonstrates his own love for us in that while we were yet sinners Christ died for us.”

Jesus rose from the dead and now he lives in heaven with God his father. He offers us the gift of eternal life - of living forever with him in heaven if we accept him as our Lord and saviour.

Jesus said "I am the way, the truth, and the life. No one comes to the father except by me." God reaches out in love to you and wants you to be his child.

Matamata hosts TV Secondary Schools Pairs

M

atamata Bowling Club was pleased to host the Thames Valley Secondary Schools Pairs Championships for boys and girls this week with almost perfect weather and a great turnout. With teams fielded from Hauraki, Thames, Hauraki Plains and Matamata, competitive play saw the district teams challenged with an enjoyable tournament. Tamati Sydney and Liam Shelley won the Boys Y10 and under title. In second place were Matamata’s Nico Concha and Oliver Nicholls. Huge congratulations were extended to the four boys who have been selected for the training group from which a Waikato team to play Auckland will be chosen.

Fishing Report i, I hope you all enjoyed the long weekend – yes I know we don’t all get time off but I hope a lot of you managed to cast a line or two.

On the local rivers and streams it’s a good time of the year to check out the small streams and where they run into the rivers. This time of the spawning cycle the trout start heading into these small streams – you will be quite surprised at how little water flow they need.

In the Rotorua area it’s a similar story.

The stream mouths running into Lake Rotorua are well worth a look. Glen Skinner, trout guide, tells me he has had fish topping the 8lb plus out of the mouth of the Ngongataha stream – one just on that magical 10lb mark. Generally the conditions over the weekend were very good for jigging. Glen tells me all the trophy lakes performed quite well with the pick of them being Rotiti.

In the Taupo region the rivers are in summer mode really – low and clear. This requires a stealthy approach to the rivers edge, light lines, fluro carbon leaders and good polarised glasses to spot the fish be-

The other day local fisho Raymond King landed himself a beautiful 16lb snapper while fishing off Waikawau with charter guide, Eric Carter. Nice fish, well done Kingo!

Up in the Mercury Bay area the late evening high tides were very favourable for change of light stray lining. John Ellwood, charter boat The Whai’s skipper, tells me they did very nicely along the southern end of Great Merc.

Over in the Bay of Plenty it continues to be a bit patchy. The snapper fishing has been quite good in the Tauranga Harbour particularly down the Bowentown end.

Another local snapper guru, Vaughan Mitchell, has been making the most of having the beloved Leander back in the water.

He has caught some nice snapper around Mayor and, out on the eastern knols, gem fish and bluenose.

fore they see you! The good news on that front is that there are plenty of nice fresh run trout in there to target.

Out on the lake the deep trolling has been producing some nice fish – in particular off the river mouths.

To the sea and the west coast has been generally quite calm and allowed for some very good fishing. The snapper are on the worm beds at the moment, feeding up before the colder months ahead. Dwayde Pinny, charter boat skipper, has been heading south of Kawhia off Albatross Point to about 45m of water. Dwayde tells me there are good numbers of snapper there and quite a few of them are up in double figures. On the game fishing scene out west, there is still marlin about. The other day a stripey of 192kg was caught off the Manukau – now that’s a magnificent stripey!

Up to the Coromandel and over the weekend there were big tides with the full moon being on Sunday. The tides were good for fishing the bottom of the tide at around midday and just after. Reports from up there suggested that this has been

Matamata College - Celebrating 100 years 1918 - 2018

f course there has been a number of national and international representatives through sport, politics, the arts, education and many other fields of interest but over the past 100 years, there has been literally thousands of success stories that are attributed in no small way, to time spent at Matamata College.

Generations of families have passed through the college and have grown up to raise their own families, complete almost every trade you can think of, start local businesses, teach and employ our children, nurse our elderly and contribute to the continued success of the place we all call home. Every one of these successes deserve recognition and over the past 18 months plus, a dedicated team of drivers have worked together to ensure every individual that attended the school or centenary celebrations felt warmly welcomed and acknowledged on their return.

Having recently ticked over his 17th year at Matamata College, Principal Alan Munro has witnessed considerable change not only to the refurbishment and improvement of the school’s physical environment, but the ever changing New Zealand education system. “It is an honour to lead our school which, thanks to proactive leadership and the ongoing support we receive from an incredibly passionate board of trustees and community, is extremely well placed to take on the future and whatever the next hundred years throws our way” he said at official opening formalities last Saturday. “I can only imagine how special the reconnecting of friendships, reminiscing and a literal walk down memory lane will be for many attending this weekend’s program of events.”

porter Lynette Stanley at the helm, an extremely enthusiastic centenary organising committee has worked at an increasing tempo to produce a reunion where past students and staff can gather together to renew acquaintances and reminisce over their school years. Lynette, as a third generation ex pupil of Matamata College also served the school and Board of Trustees for a number of years with her two sons also completing their education at Matamata College. In addressing attendees of the official opening, Lynette reflected on those unable to attend centenary celebrations, but also acknowledged the dedicated and high calibre staff and supporters who have contributed to developing the school community over the past century.

“As an organising committee we have enjoyed working together to make this reunion possible and I thank each of the members for their support, especially Darlene Thomas who we recruited as our event manager. She has worked through the minefield of health and safety, publicity, registration, catering… an endless list to ensure the success of this function.”

Along with Hinuera Rugby & Sports Club and Good George Brewery during the evening functions, Darlene offers appreciation to the many partners who helped deliver the weekend of celebrations and ensure everything ran smoothly. “There are many individuals who stepped up and assisted for no other reason than ‘because they could’ she says. “People like Sheelah Lamb and her incredible research skills, Lynne Jobe for coordinating the memorabilia items and marquee decoration, the Matamata College senior students who helped with everything from registrations to waitressing and our local service groups

for assistance with parking, marshalling and security.”

Interesting centenary snippets‌

A painting within the painting being painted by the painter who painted the painting where he is painting! Inspired by artist Michael Sheppard, ex Matamata College student (1974-1978) Hansen Ihle donated his self-portrait to Matamata College recognising the 100 year centenary event.

Mr Buck Pound was the eldest past student attending the Matamata College centenary event, and is just five months older than Miss Joan Quinlan. The pair were in the same year at school and are pictured with Zachariah Kingston, the youngest student currently enrolled at Matamata College.

Pictured with Dame Catherine Tizard (nee Maclean) is Angela Jones and Phillipa Nisbet. The twin’s mother, the late Lesley Wills (nee Mapp) was a very good friend of Dame Cath’s when the two attended Matamata College. Dame Cath gained a University Bursary in her final year at Matamata College in 1948 and enrolled at Auckland University College (Zoology) the following year.

So faithfulness in our Lord is our safeguard in life. Close and loving communication with him saves us from the effects of evil. With faith in our heart we can look at life in a more positive way.

went over to Tauranga the other day to see 16th Avenue Theatre’s production of “The Perfect Murder” by Peter James. The cast and crew of this murder-mystery play did a good job but I did feel the story was a bit far-fetched.

One of the characters was a diabetic murdered by putting sugar in his insulin injection, then being bashed over the head with a hammer, after which he was tied up, wrapped in plastic bin bags and put in a chest freezer. He survived, to return later to watch his wife die by eating biscuits he had poisoned with arsenic. He then took off with his new girlfriend, and the proceeds of his wife’s

life insurance policy, although how he claimed this, already being reported to the police as dead, was not explained. I think this took Dramatic Licence a bit too far!

A couple of new theatre groups are starting up in our area, one in Hamilton and one in Tauranga. Stage Right Theatre Trust in Tauranga already have one successful production, the musical, “Blood Brothers” under their belt, and are now auditioning for “Shrek The Musical” for production at Baycourt Theatre in September. In Hamilton, Bold Theatre are auditioning for their first production, the musical “Urinetown”,
