H

i there and welcome to another week! I couldn’t help thinking when my alarm started blaring this morning how the weather gods seem to know it’s a work day and turn on the sun. Most of us get to the weekend with a list of things we intend getting done and boom, Saturday morning comes… and so does the rain!

For many of the local kids around the district especially, the long, wet spring must have been particularly frustrating while they were doing their best to train and prepare their animals for ag-days. Regardless of the rain however, it was lovely to see the effort and turnout of so many kids that took part in their school events and of course, the Group Day held at Bedford Park recently.

Well on Sunday I had the pleasure of popping in to a very special birthday celebration and although you’ll read more about this lovely local on page three, I left thinking what an inspiring chap he is. Living unassisted, cooking and cleaning for yourself at 100 years old is pretty incredible, let alone still pottering about in the garden and digging the spuds. I have absolutely no doubt Vic will be totally spoiled by his family and friends and boy, he certainly deserves it.

Speaking of age, I’m feeling close to a hundred this week, but more in a nostalgic kind of way. As most of you are aware, I have three sons and when Scene first hit the streets nearly 13 years ago, they were six, 11 and 12 years old. Over the years you’ve sat through all the ups and downs of my rollercoaster ride in raising them – even when I was tearing my hair out while they “lived” through teenage times and gradually matured to become pretty reasonable adults! Like many parents, I was incredibly proud to see the oldest two qualify their respective trades, buy their

Then whammo… you turn around and they’re all grown up and absolutely cracking this whole adulty thing! My point I suppose, is when us old people look at you and your beautiful children and say things like “enjoy every second of it – they grow up way too fast”, we mean it. Regardless of how much you think they drive you nuts, the little tantrums, the terrors of teenagers, their first loves and all the wonderful little life experiences that come your way end all too quickly.

Celebrating a very special gentleman

I

n the words of Hon Maggie Barry, Minister for Seniors; “Beautiful young people are accidents of nature, but beautiful old people are works of art.”

One of our own local works of art, Vic Maffey, celebrated a very special birthday yesterday and as well as receiving a card from Ms Barry, was thrilled to be acknowledged by Her Majesty, Queen Elizabeth II and the Governor General, Dame Patsy Reddy. “You know, I only feel 10 years older than I was at 90” laughs Vic, “I’ve had a lovely time and a very special weekend.”

In honour of his 100th birthday, family members hosted a special luncheon for Vic at his home on Sunday where along with nieces and nephews, great – and great, great relatives joined to honour a remarkable man. His secret to long life is centred around the love of a wonderful family, good healthy living and lots of fresh, home grown fruit and vegetables.

Vic, a twin, was born in Wellington to parents who were farmers in the Manawatu. It was when he was four years old and following the depression, his family moved to the Waikato, taking up a sharemilking position at Okoroire. Vic started school at Hinuera and along with his twin sister, had three more sisters follow which meant at least one Maffey sibling attended the school for 18 years running!

There was however, a small recess of five years when they returned to the Manawatu for a short time. “Hinuera has always been home” says Vic, “and I had a wonderful childhood there. I was very involved in playing cricket and table tennis – both of which I did quite well with actually. In fact it was a real thrill when later I was bestowed the honour of being named a Life Member of Hinuera Cricket.” Too, on the 90th anniversary of his first day at Hinuera School, Vic donated $90 – one dollar

for each year that had passed! Of course the school was delighted, as was Vic when he received lovely letters of thanks from current students and an invitation to the school.

After leaving school, running the family farm and later purchasing his own farm in the Peria Hills, it was in 1952 for health reasons, Vic sold up, moved to town and took up an adult trade certificate with C & M McKenzie builders. Locals take out Australasian regional cup

f you’re new to the phenomenon of CrossFit but like the idea of high intensity, functional movement without the traditional feel of a gym, then giving Triple Eight a buzz might be a good idea!

More than just a local phone prefix, Triple Eight is Matamata’s only training facility specifically dedicated to what can only be described as one of the fastest growing sports worldwide. It’s the place where all kinds of people of all ages, shapes and sizes get together and with group training, focus on building a body more than body building. CrossFit is a strength and conditioning program often used in military or police training and, in contrast to individual gym sessions, has one daily workout for the entire group scaled to varying ability.

Initially introducing the regime in group sessions locally, it was when Fitzone on Arawa Street closed down that local woman Jodie Pryor decided to explore opportunities of opening a purpose built CrossFit training facility. With support from her family and friends, encouragement from members and the perfect premise becoming available, Triple Eight was born. Immediately, members that liked the discipline of structured Olympic lifting, cardio and gymnastics training enthusiastically joined the movement and before long, began investigating the competitive side of the sport.

Having previously entered Masters competitions for athletes over 35 years of age, Triple Eight members Kim Louch and Steve Langdon decided to enter the 2017 New Zealand/Australia competition recently. After achieving top 10 age and division status in the initial on-line competition, both were excited to learn they had made the cut for the Invitationals held in Auckland. “In our division we fin-

ished in the top two which meant we would represent Auckland in the regional competition against Wellington and Christchurch” says Kim. “There are between 30 and 40 competitors in each team and to learn that the event would be held in the Gold Coast, Australia, and for the first time, include five Australian State teams, was although a little daunting, hugely exciting. Alongside our own families, it was amazing to have Jodie travel with us as our coach, but when other members of the Triple Eight family jumped on board to support us, the thought of all being there together was awesome.”

tion, Kim and Steve were confident in strength and fitness levels, but could not have prepared for the extreme climate change! “We’ve had such a long, wet winter here in New Zealand” says Kim, “and to arrive in hot, humid 25+ degree heat, it was like some kind of mental barrier overtook physical capabilities! Simple trips on the skipping rope for example, was not only completely out of character but extremely frustrating. We were both so thankful to have Jodie on the side line screaming encouragement and getting us back on track – I don’t think we could have done it without her!”

Although Kim and Steve knew they had competed well - especially with Kim achieving a personal best with her weights, both couldn’t help feeling after their final event, that “a little more gas in the tank” may have improved their team’s standing. “Once we were done, you can’t imagine how incredibly stoked we were to hear our team had won the Regional Cup for a second year running” says Kim. “It

was a huge thrill, particularly given that we had outperformed not only our opposing New Zealand regions, but also three of the five Australian state teams! The entire competition was so much tougher than we could have imagined but honestly, coming in third overall behind NSW and Queensland was pretty overwhelming.”

With the top level regional success under their belt, the Triple Eight team are grateful they took the opportunity of competing on an international level and agree it was a huge learning experience. “We now have a clear idea of what we really need to work on as a team to take competition to the next level” says Steve. “We’re all extremely motivated to continue challenging each other and ensure as a group, we are also individually striving to be better than we were yesterday.”

A yarn with the sweet painted lady t might seem odd to buy a business and promptly close during what would normally be the busiest trading time of the year but for the Jacques family, that’s exactly what was needed to give them the best chance of success.

Matamata real estate agent, Neville Jacques, grew up with delicious home baking - not only with his mum Pat being an avid baker, but also having two sisters both pretty handy behind the oven mitts.

So, when a small Waharoa business was listed for sale almost seven years ago, he immediately saw potential and after discussion with his family, decided it was the perfect opportunity to revamp the premises and open a fresh new café on one of our busiest state highways.

“I remember when I first saw the cafe, thinking the monstrous corrugated iron lady that was perched on the roof had to go” laughs Pat, “but ironically, when Neville said it reminded him of Elton John’s song, Sweet Painted Lady, we all agreed that would be quite a nice theme to work around with the planned refurbishment. We went for that welcoming, musical kind of feel and the name – and the lady, just kind of stuck!”

In re-opening the business, Pat says they never intended to reinvent the wheel. “We simply wanted to share our passion for good food at good prices and deliver a menu that was made entirely on-site, from scratch, using real ingredients and tried and trusted recipes” she says. “Our focus was to create the sort of place we would like to go to ourselves - not just for excellent food, but for an experience where our customers felt appreciated and valued.”

As it happened, the Jacques seemed to get the recipe right immediately when, after spending close to two months cleaning, painting and refurbishing the premises, they opened with a range of sweet and savoury choices that literally “took customers home”. “We have never rested on our laurels” says Pat. “We constantly take on board new ideas or suggestions and enjoy nothing more than acting on feedback. Whether it’s a toasted sandwich on the run or a relaxed Sunday brunch, we strive to have our customers look forward to returning for fresh, tasty food and a great cuppa to enjoy with it.”

Growing quite a reputation, particularly by regular travellers, the Sweet Painted Lady team have been thrilled to be named as regional finalists in the annual Meadow Fresh New Zealand Café of the Year competition for the past two years running.

We are all extremely grateful for such wonderful ongoing support.”

Although initially the Sweet Painted Lady cafe was entirely family owned and operated, over the years the team has grown considerably and now employs up to 17 staff members on various rosters, seven days per week. “It’s lovely to be regularly working alongside two of my granddaughters” says Pat, “but honestly, the whole team is like one big family. As they say, when you love what you do, you’ll never work a day in your life and I am very fortunate that Neville saw, and took an opportunity that really does tick all the boxes.”

With indoor and outdoor dining area extensions complete, the kitchen has also recently been expanded to enable out catering with the same commitment to home-baked quality as available on-site.

Within coming weeks some exciting new additions will be on the menu so, if you haven’t already, pop out and enjoy a truly home-fresh café experience.

Rock and pop distinction

or year 13 Matamata College student Kimika Clements, it was when she started at Matamata Intermediate School she thought learning drums might be pretty cool so, under the guidance of music teacher Blair Stanbridge, she picked up the sticks and never looked back. The following year as a year 8 student, she joined Drumline; a creative style of drumming performed in a group and, with coaching from Brian Telfar, thoroughly enjoyed the alternative slant to solo drumming. A particular highlight that year she says, was at the opening of the new i-Site where as part of Drumline, Kimika performed in front of Prime Minister, John Key! Beginning Matamata College as a year 9 student, Kimika immediately took music and performance music, also keeping up drumming lessons with Brian. She continued with Trinity College examinations and over following years, progressed through

the grades. “Brian has always encouraged my personal style” says Kimika, “and although my passion is more rock and metal type genres, he has helped immensely with improvisation techniques including everything from Latin, Sumba and jazz influences. It’s been great to have the opportunity to continually challenge myself in areas outside my comfort zone.”

At the recent Te Awamutu music competitions, Kimika was over the moon to pass her final examination, the Grade 8 Trinity Rock and Pop exam, with distinction. “It’s taken a few years” she laughs, “but I’m really pleased. From here I’ll definitely continue drumming and hopefully at some point, join a band. I’m keen to master the double kick so hopefully while I decide my future with a gap year, Brian will keep working with me and, with no further exams to stress over, it’ll be all about having fun!” Caron Stewart.

here’s all kinds of reasons people attend their school reunion and of course, all kinds of reasons they don’t! In preparing for the 100th reunion of Matamata College, the organising committee have gone to great lengths to ensure past students, families and staff of all ages have a lot of fun, catch up and enjoy the nostalgia that formed an important part of their lives.

With everything from a high tea kicking off the weekend to live music and a party atmosphere on Friday and Saturday nights, other activities such as a Hobbiton visit and game of golf will ensure those travelling from outside the region are well entertained and catered for. “So far we have sold over 1,700 tickets to individual

events” says committee member, Darlene Thomas. “People are coming from all over the world and with registrations confirmed from Australia, Canada, Hong Kong, Japan, the UK and America, it’s fantastic to see how much value they put on their time, experience or memories of Matamata College.”

Given the school is celebrating 100 years, as you can imagine a lot has changed and regardless of what decade was attended, there are more than just technological or aesthetic differences. “We’ve had a lot of feedback from people who are now at the age they appreciate they still have the opportunity to meet up” says Darlene.

reminder that we’re not invincible. Life and friendship becomes so much more precious as we mature and to catch up on missed years, share photos of children, grandchildren and various life events, is a really neat way to reconnect.”

With online and postal registrations well underway, everyone is welcome to take part in as much or as little as they would like during the weekend of festivities. 100 years is something to celebrate and regardless of whether you remember your time there favourably or not, it’s a great way to realise life is not about job titles, waistlines or hairlines – its about people and trust me, you’re bound to catch up with some pretty special ones.

An ever present source of help

By Stephen Prebble, All Saints Anglican Church It is very easy to go through life being self-dependent – and as we go we sing, ‘I did it my way’! Depending on self-limits, each to our own resources and capabilities. And what happens when we repeatedly find ourselves in difficulties?

God looks on, wanting to help but cannot until sought.

Jesus says ‘behold, I stand at the door and knock. If anyone hears my voice and opens the door I will come in and dine with them’ (Rev. 3:20).

If we suffer an addiction or keep failing in our relationships – broken relationship after broken relationship? We become stuck and carry around a sense of failure. Much very good human help is available but sometimes, even that is of limited value. The deep inner change we desire eludes us. We repeat the same patterns, become angry and blame everyone else, and fail to experience deep peace and joy.

Prayer to Jesus with a plea for help opens up the spiritual resources of heaven. God gives us the will, and the resources, to do what we know is right, loving, and good. God feeds our soul with good things, enabling us to make changes that bring about our full potential, purpose and lasting joy.

Help is closer than we realise. God is an ever present source of help (Psalm 46). And an honest prayer for help will move Gods heart with compassion. Prayer is a sign we have come to an end of our own resources and are ready to tap into Gods unlimited Spiritual power.

If you are struggling with hopelessness and a sense of failure, know God loves you! God is available to help you know matter where you have been, what you have done or where you may be. Help is close at hand.

or Jane Pike, opening a retail fashion store was more than just a love of nice clothing. It was about helping women look and feel great with styling and accessories to suit their personality, lifestyle - and of course, that one-off special event! In the 15 months since opening her Arawa Street store however, the reasons for opening her doors everyday have increased in ways she never expected.

Prior to returning to retail, Jane, her husband and two sons were farmers and although general shopping, school and lifestyle meant she wasn’t exactly glued to the cowshed, it was when selling up and moving into town she became increasingly aware of just how supportive and innately cohesive our community really is. atamata College Gateway programme celebrated some huge achievements at the 2017 prize giving and Employers Night last week. With many senior students from year 11 to 13 experiencing all number of employment and vocational opportunities, huge thanks was extended to local businesses and organisations that continue to support the in-school programme.

Along with achieving substantial NCEA accreditation, work place experience and course completion, several students have successfully transitioned into further training or apprenticeships as a direct result of placements.

Combining her passion for fashion with commitment to community, it was in 2015 Jane had her first wave of inspiration! “It was while lovely new seasons ranges were arriving I suddenly thought how nice it would be to host an informal, fun fashion evening where women could see clothing and accessories matched up without having to try it all on themselves” says Jane. “At the same time I was very aware that Pohlen Hospital was fundraising for specialist equipment so thought why not combine the two. We organised the event and, including bubbles and nibbles, charged a small ticket price which was then entirely donated to Pohlen. The evening was so much fun and with incredibly positive feedback, was something we decided could be repeated.”

A second event was equally successful with funds this time, donated to Matamata St John’s. “Those that attended were thrilled to know they were supporting such worthwhile organisations and, at the same time, enjoying a fun night out” says Jane.

Having confirmed the third seasonal fundraising fashion evening, proceeds from the November event will benefit Matamata Volunteer Fire Brigade and tickets are now on sale. The Romans are coming! riends, Romans, countrymen… lend me your ears - or in the case of Matamata Musical’s latest production, Rome Sweet Rome, lend them a couple of hours of your time to enjoy a wonderful two course buffet and be entertained by a Roman romp of epic proportions.

Brought to the Musical Theatre by Morrinsvillians Deb May and Johanna Chase, Rome Sweet Rome has successfully regaled audiences in Morrinsville and is being recreated right here in Matamata, with local cast bringing the Roman themed show to life.

Johanna and Deb have been working together for the past 16 or so years, after Deb moved to Morrinsville from Rotorua. Having basically been born into theatre, Deb treaded the boards for her first time when she was a mere 10 years old in Auckland Playhouse Theatre Children’s Light Opera.

Since then she has been on stage in many singing leads, moving behind the scenes as musical director in the 90’s.

The gods, as they say, were smiling when she moved to Morrinsville and met Johanna Chase and the directing twosome was born. Johanna brings with her 22 years of experience doing everything from lighting and sound, wardrobe and all manner of things backstage. She has also has had her fair share of onstage roles, and worn everything from tutus to a Marge Simpson wig, comedy being her particular forte.

Being under the tutelage of this directorial experience are three relative newbies to the stage who play the sweet maidens of the story. For Holly Manton, this is her first ever experience in an out of school production. “I have always

been interested in theatre and dressing up” says Holly, “and the opportunity to get to know new people has been amazing.”

Alongside Holly, as the incorrigible “Honeypuff”, Helen Drysdale Dunn is wowing the directors with her divine singing, some of which she says has been very challenging, but is really enjoying the opportunity to extend her theatrical skillset in this show. “Costumes, singing, acting and having fun with audiences is what I love” says Helen, “and having a speaking role adds that bit more excitement.”

Local scouts host adventurers

n the Friday night of Labour weekend local scouts hosted three scouts from the All Saints Birkenhead Scout troop in Auckland. The three youths, James Doughty, Michael Oborn and Connor Foster-Nesbit were taking part in their Chief Scouts Award. The scouts had to use three different forms of transport and travel over 150km in four days.

After catching the ferry across the Auckland Harbour and bussing down from Auckland, the trio spent the night at Matamata Scout Den. The following morning

Pohlen Maternity ‘Baby friendly’ accredited

he Baby Friendly Hospital Initiative (BFHI) aims to improve exclusive breastfeeding rates and ensure evidenced-based best practice standards of care are offered by maternity services.

Baby friendly facilities work to see that all women, regardless of their feeding method, receive unbiased information, support and professional advice in their decision to feed their babies.

Breastfeeding lays the foundation for good health in infancy, childhood and adult life. Today more than 20,000 hospitals have been Baby Friendly Accredited in 156 countries worldwide. The BFHI programme encourages hospitals and health care facilities - particularly maternity wards - to adopt practices that fully protect, promote and support exclusive breastfeeding from birth.

The BFHI is an international programme launched in 1991 by the World Health Organisation (WHO) and the United Nations Children’s Fund (UNICEF) to ensure all maternity services become centres of breastfeeding support worldwide. In New Zealand, all maternity services are required to achieve and maintain BFHI accreditation.

The standards of care and services provided are audited by the New Zealand Breastfeeding Alliance (NZBA) every three years. Currently 99.85 percent of infants born in national maternity services are delivered in BFHI accredited facilities.

Pohlen Maternity and staff have shown a significant commitment to breastfeeding over the past nine years maintaining their standards and a breastfeeding rate at discharge from the Unit at around 85%.The presentation of the certificate recognizes the on-going commitment to breastfeeding and the baby friendly initiative. Pohlen Hospital Board Chair, David Gasquoine was pleased to attend the presentation by BFHI representatives to Pohlen Maternity.

The BFHI has had a positive impact on New Zealand’s maternity services, with annual breastfeeding rates showing more than 80 percent of babies are exclusively breastfed on discharge from Baby Friendly hospitals.

Breastfeeding is important and helps to optimize lifelong health outcomes for mothers and babies.

“Pete Petersen Fountain” – Resolution We accept that the decision to remove the ‘Pete Petersen’ Memorial Fountain from its site on Tainui Street is sensible. To all the friends, supporters and people of the district who rallied to keep the water feature earlier, we offer this resumé of events and reasons for our decision.

At a meeting to press our opinion that the fountain should be returned to good condition, council were able to give us copies of a recent engineer’s report outlining the condition of the fountain and what would be needed to make it workable again.

This report concludes that the concrete has deteriorated with age, internally as well as externally, to the point where permanent repair is not practical. Any repairs would be cosmetic, not adding appreciably to the life of the structure. After surface coating and sealing, the original appearance and aesthetics could not be retained.

hat a weekend of golf at Walton recently! It was great to have a third successive weekend of golf in fine weather with many of our finest players involved. Saturday was packed with tough and tight semi-finals for the club championships and flights. Then there was Sunday. After a shower before play, the Westpac Club Championship finals were battled out on the course at its absolute best of grassy fairways, punishing rough, the first real run, and impeccable and speedy greens. Hugh congratulations are due to the winners and proper appreciation to the beaten finalists. Getting to the final is a worthy achievement.

Waikato U18 selection for local rugby girls

lne Kloppers might have been basically forced into rugby but as it happens, she’s pretty glad she was. “My sister’s team needed a half back” she laughs, “so really put the pressure on. I had always played soccer and although rugby was all pretty new to me, it wasn’t long before I learned the game and loved it.”

Similarly for Madison Norman-Keenan and Talisha Taylor, their sport of choice hadn’t previously been rugby either. Madison was a keen hockey player and Talisha enjoyed netball and volleyball - although with her dad coaching rugby and brother playing, she was “strongly encouraged” to give it a go. The three joined the Matamata College girl’s team and over the past year, have gone from strength to strength.

“This year’s team has gelled well” says Alne, “and working hard on drills, skills and fitness has seen us enjoy a great season. We have continually improved and are proud to have given the two Hamilton Girl’s High School teams a good run for their money. These teams have traditionally dominated competition but, as well as giving us a constant challenge and something to really aspire to, have consistently

shown our newer players what great sportsmanship is. They play hard but are awesome competitors.”

Having recently been put forward by their coach for regional Waikato Under 18 trials held in Putaruru recently, Alne, Madison and Talisha were stoked to hear they had successfully made the cut from 60 girls trialling, to the final squad of 30.

“Over half of those selected were from the two Hamilton Girl’s teams” said Madison.

“We were fairly confident Alne would make the cut, but for Talisha and I as first year players, it was massive. We were really excited particularly given one of the coaches was Honey Hereme, a Black Fern, NZ 7’s Rep and NZ League rep!”

With bi-weekly training in Hamilton and games played in both Hamilton and Auckland against Taranaki, Bay of Plenty, Counties and North Harbour regions, the girls didn’t always get the result they wanted but thoroughly enjoyed the competition.

They would like to particularly acknowledge the incredible support of their families, but also Bevo Tuhakaraina and Shannon Johnson for their time, effort and awesome coaching. Caron Stewart.

College sports round-up

ver the holidays our Clay Target shooting team shot at the North Island and National Championships in Hamilton. There were over 300 students competing from Southland to Whangarei, and everywhere in between. The team representing Matamata College included Alex Colson, Sean Allen, Max Durning, Max Hunwick and Luke Palmore.

They all had their best performances of the season. Sean Allen moved into a shoot off for the Points Score event in the Nationals and Sean also got his 25 Long Run badge (which means he shot 25 targets in a row without missing), not an easy one to get! Alex Colson got his badge a couple of months ago at the Putaruru School shoot.

All the boys shot extremely well and represented our school proudly. Thanks go to Geoff Craig (teacher in charge) and Malcolm Morrison (coach) for being there with the boys, and also to the parents who supported them.

We also had three talented hockey players off to Timaru to play in the National U15 Girls’ Championship Tournament.

Shawna Stoner and Grace Hayward play for Waikato U15 team, after taking out all their pool games they finished top of their table and went into play-offs in which they finished seventh overall out of 21 teams.

Sophie Tarry, playing for the Thames Valley U15 team, had a tough run with both the winners and runners up from last year in their pool. They did well to come away with 12th overall.

Braedyn Henderson and Logan Webber travelled to Christchurch to play at the New Zealand Junior Squash Age Group Championships. Braedyn finished 12th out of 32 in the U15 age group, and Logan came away seventh in the U17 age group.

Well done boys.

We wrapped up term three with our sports prize giving held at the Matamata Racecourse. It was a fantastic evening of celebration as we were able to honour so many of the great athletes we have in our school. Michele Montague who represents New Zealand in both weightlifting and women’s rugby, Kelsie Wills who represents New Zealand in volleyball and Sam Weatherly, junior apprentice jockey of the year were the guest speakers.

Shaydene Begovich, Courtney Hawkings and Poihaere Wharawhara were clear favourites as they were each nominated in three of the major seven categories and came away with multiple awards. Shaydene Begovich took home a total of eight awards including Sportswoman of the Year, team of the year for New World College A Netball and National Honours for representing New Zealand in both volleyball and beach Volleyball. Courtney Hawkings took away six awards including National Honours for representing New Zealand in Lacrosse and Best All Round Sportsperson. Poihaere Wharawhara was awarded with seven awards which included Senior Maori Sportswoman of the year, Most Persevering Sportswoman of the year, and team of the year for both New World College A and Senior Girls volleyball. The talent among these girls is phenomenal and without a doubt they will continue onto amazing sporting achievements.

Other major awards were awarded to Jack Trower for Sportsman of the year, Kyle Fannin for Most Persevering Sportsman of the year, Te Aonui WharawharaMuriwai for Senior Maori Sportsman of the year, Waata Wharawhara for Junior Maori Sportsman of the year, Gina Witika for Junior Maori Sportswoman of the year, Olivia Goodwin for Junior Sportswoman of the

year and Brodie Connolly for Junior Sportsman of the year and National Honours for New Zealand Junior MotoX Champion. Kurtis Pertab was also Awarded National Honours for making the NZ Secondary Schools Rodeo Team.

Intermediate talent brings the house down

A

fter two weeks of auditions that attracted around 50 performances, Matamata Intermediate School hall was packed to capacity last Wednesday night with the finals of the annual talent quest. “It was an incredibly good representation of the emerging talent and confidence of our students” says HOD, Karen Raymond. “The specialist teaching team

have done an excellent job of encouraging students to shine both individually and in groups, and without exception every one of the finalists deserved to be there. It would have been an extremely difficult decision for our judges but regardless of placings, every contestant should feel very proud of their performance.”

Hannah Allen and Hannah Thomas took out the Best Instrumental award with a funky drumming duet that included a bit of freestyling.

Performing a beautiful lyrical dance, Georgia Rose Wightman won the Best Dance or Gymsport Performance award.

With their high energy performance, the Senior Rock Band was a popular choice for the Best Group Performance award.

With beautiful harmonising Archie Hazlett and Mereana Pearce won the award for Best Vocal Performance.

Thomas Pilmore-Evans won the Most Entertaining Performance award.

With what can only be described as an outstanding performance, Louisa Brice was named Supreme Winner.

A lot of extra practice and hard work paid off for Dem Kookie Beats who took out the Judges Choice award with their Hip Hop routine.

n conjunction with Nicholson United Auto’s, Pohlen Foundation Trust hosted their inaugural fundraising venture at Weallean’s Cup Race Day recently and were absolutely delighted with its success.

Held in the Epsom Lounge and veranda at Matamata Racing Club, local businesses and groups supported the event by purchasing one of 25 tables to entertain their colleagues and guests, also enjoying an informal address by cricket legends Brendon McCullum and Daniel Vettori, and appren-

tice jockey of the year, local lad, Sam Weatherley.

“We were extremely fortunate with the weather” says Pohlen Foundation Trust Fundraising Administrator, Charlene Conner. “After days of rain preceding the event, stunning spring conditions added atmosphere to a really great day. Our MC, Frank Vosper, kept everything flowing beautifully and as well as introducing our guest speakers with a light hearted interview type discussion, organised a most

successful Punters Club – which I’m told, returned a healthy profit for participants!

We also offer our thanks to Jaye Clark and the Matamata Racing Club who were extremely accommodating and helped ensure a fabulous day and a fun event.”

Dark realities and salvation

n Galations Ch.6 v. 7&8 we read, “You cannot fool God, so don’t make a fool of yourself. You will harvest what you plant. If you follow your selfish desires, you will harvest destruction but if you follow the spirit, you will harvest eternal life.” (CEV Bible for Today).

Jesus spoke often of the love and mercy of his father, but he also reminded his disciples of the dark realities of life – sin and evil, and its eventual fate. He said, “Depart from me all you evil doers!” He described

their fate as “wailing and grinding of teeth”.

We need to put our whole hearted trust in our loving father who sent his son to be our saviour. Jesus came to earth to save us from destruction and corruption caused by our sins.

We should ask forgiveness and put our trust in his gift of salvation so that we may someday attain eternal life. We need to walk our journey in life in the way that Jesus has shown us in the bible.

Fishing Report

i. Just another 100mls of rain or so in the past few days –yes, it’s been a wet spring and not so warm either.

This has made fishing the local streams and rivers a bit of a problem. The extra colour in the water is fine but the extra flow, and there’s been plenty of it, can be a hassle. This time of the year is an awesome time to get out after work and fish the change of light with the kids.

In the Rotorua area the Trophy lakes have now been open for a month. My reports from the anglers on the water every day are what you would call mixed.

Tarawera, normally an excellent lake for condition factor of the fish, has been a bit of a let down - plenty of fish, but a lot quite skinny. The best condition trout are coming off Okataina, then Rotoiti.

In the Taupo region the rivers are in great condition at the moment. This is now coming into the time when you get out the Fluro Carbon leaders, light lines and small dry imitive pattern flies. Yes, the insect hatch is starting. Out on the lake the early morning harling has been quite productive. You have to throw the blankies back quite early though and be on the water before the change of light. If you don’t have to use a torch to find your way around then you’re too late!

To the sea. Wow what a time of year this is for catching snapper on the west coast.

Since I last gave a report I have been lucky enough to get out on a charter with Dwayde Pinny. Fishing out of Kawhia on the charter boat, the Clansman, we had a great day. It was organised by local fisho, Steve Dench (Denchy) and we returned home with eight very nice snapper each.

The best of them tipped the scales at 23lb and was landed by Hugh Rhodes – very nice animal ah! While the limit out west is ten, a lot of them were in double figures and we certainly didn’t need that many!

www.sceneonline.co.nz story. I went out on Snapper Safaris barge last Wednesday – a charter boat with plenty of experience and it showed. We fished off Deadman’s Point at the entrance to Mania Harbour. We left there with four or five snapper each with the best one tipping the scales at 15lb 4oz and a few others in double figures. This week sees the tides getting bigger with full moon this Saturday. The low tides are mid to late morning and this is a good time to fish. The last hour going out and the first hour coming in has been very productive.

Up to the Mercury bay area John Ellwood tells me there are some nice snapper lurking around the shallows around the Mercury Islands. As I said before there is quite big tides this weekend so that will be ideal for moving a bit of burley around the shallows to try and drag out those big elusive moochers.

Over in the Bay of Plenty the results are a bit mixed to be honest. I had a very excited angler in the shop here the other day.

He was fishing just off Rabbit Island off the mount when he spotted a workup of Kahawai. With a bit of a quick change of gear, he dragged a lure through them and after a hook up and a ¾ hour fight, he landed a 27kg kingi less than 100m off Rabbit Island. On the snapper scene there has been a few nice ones caught off the knoll at Motiti lately but few and far between. Out at Mayor the weather hasn’t been great but there is a few nice fish around.
