Appreciated feedback from a real dummy

F

ollowing a serious car accident a substantial amount of money was offered to an ambulance officer and, although personally refused, the officer was pleased to have the donation placed in an account to purchase specialised equipment for the benefit of Matamata St John. As a trustee of the then established Parton account, and along with the secretary of the time, the officer recently released the funds and wound up the account to contribute towards the purchase of an incredibly valuable training mannequin.

“With this very generous donation and a bequeath from the estate of Dave Mann, we are delighted to have had the opportunity to purchase such a fantastic training device” says Station Manager, Lisa Newman. “We’ve seen them at various training courses but due to the significant cost involved, it’s really only the clinical development teams in the main centres that have previously had them. To have acquired one for Matamata is fantastic and will help immensely with training not only for St John but the Fire Brigade as co first responders, and the medical team at Pohlen Hospital.”

Connected to iPad technology, real time feedback on CPR technique measures the rate, depth and recoil applied. Not only does this establish effective administration, but ensures effective and consistent techniques are taught and mastered. “With such accurate data collection we are able to pin point exactly how our technique is working or where we need to improve” says Lisa. “This is invaluable in helping us to maintain the skills of all our team and some of our senior youth who are competing in competitions or looking to move up through the ranks.”

Although currently only suitable for adult feedback training, Lisa says advancements in technology will no doubt soon include infant or child mannequins. “Where it’s not in real time, we are currently able to perform infant resuscitation training using live defibrillators but we are extremely thankful to live in a community that puts so much value in ensuring our emergency services are supported. Any funds that are donated to Matamata St John stay within our community which of course, allows us to provide the best service possible.”

Matamata fours Australasian champions ell its official – Matamata has a clean sweep of the most coveted titles possible in not only national, but the entire Australasian Firefighter Championship competition!

After winning the New Zealand National Waterways championship in March at Kamo, the team gained automatic entry to the international championship that saw 22 teams competing from New Zealand, Australia and the South Pacific. It was a huge achievement and after deciding this would be the last year of competition for two of its members, the team were out to give it everything they had.

Heading to Carterton almost a fortnight ago, the team began the journey with a visit to Kerry McKinley’s grave – a man they say, had the brigade in his heart. “We always begin our competition journey with the Sherriff” says Lyndon Johns. “He’s not with us in person but will always be in spirit and it just seems right.”

After a run through the rules, events and demonstrations held on Friday, competition began on Saturday and from the onset, everything just seemed to go right for the Matamata boys. “We had put in some extremely intense training and were ‘on fire’ so to speak” laughs Eddy Baukema.

“By the end of the first day’s competition we were ahead of Rangiora, our nearest competitor, by eight points and feeling pretty good about heading into Sunday’s events.”

As it happened, the Matamata team was so well prepared, they blazed the Hose and Breaching run by a massive 16 seconds, breaking the Australasian record. “Having concentrated on equipment and handling skills, our technique held us in exceptional form throughout” says Lyndon. “Our wives and supporters later told us their hearts were in their throats throughout the final events, but honestly – we worked so incredibly well as a team and maintained such consistency that regardless if we had lost our lead, we knew we couldn’t have done any better. To get to the end of the weekend competition with two first placings, one second and three thirds was awesome but then to hear we were nine and a half points ahead of Carterton, the host club and only other New Zealand team that has ever won the competition, was absolutely overwhelming.”

In returning to Matamata with the honour of taking out the trans-Tasman Australasian Firefighter Championship challenge, the team would like to offer their grateful thanks to Baigent Motors, Waharoa Transport Mechanical, Matamata Bridge Club and Williams Jewellery for their generous sponsorship, but also the Matamata Volunteer Fire Brigade, their wives and families for the endless support and encouragement that has literally put them at the top of their game.

With a short break and the retirement of Lyndon Johns and David Vuglar, the Matamata Fours team will begin the new Waterways season with three new team members at their first competition in two weeks time.

A true labour of love hen a large Kahikatea blew over down the back of the farm, there was one Walton farmer that had better ideas for it than firewood. Before it rotted he decided to load it on the trailer and bring it home while he mulled over a few ideas.

As it happened, the thought of building a boat had crossed his mind once before and was something he hadn’t really ever dismissed. So, after making his own Alaskan chainsaw portable mill to fillet his log, Garth Fawcett started trawling the internet and came across the perfect project to utilise the timber. It was a 16’ open hull plan that would be ideal for a spot of fishing out on the lake or the sea, and comfortably fit four people. He was pretty keen on getting his grandkids out on the water so the stability and wide base of a catamaran suited him. “I bought the plans and got underway” says Garth. “I hadn’t had a crack at anything like this before but with a lot of thinking and visualising, it all seemed to come together well beyond my expectation” he says. “Once the framework was complete, dozens of sealed plastic bot-

tles along with expanding foam were laid under the marine ply and fibreglass which, I reckon, adds good buoyancy should we ever be in the situation where things go pear shaped – I’m not sure that’s a feature many modern boats could boast!”

The event is going to be a real highlight of the rugby calendar of course, but with the added excitement of FMX legend Levi Sherwood headlining the entertainment in 2018, I have no doubt there will be a lot more people pretty anxious to win themselves some tickets with remaining promotions. Creative Matamata pass on a legacy

or the past 30 years Creative Matamata (formally known as Matamata Community Arts Council) has organised touring exhibitions and events, coordinated fundraisers and provided funding grants to various groups extending a talent or interest in the arts.

With only two meetings per year however, attendances declined and reluctantly the decision was made to disestablish the group. After seeking approval from Creative New Zealand, it was decided that all remaining funds would be donated to Pohlen Foundation Trust and with the presentation held on Fri-

day, Chair Lindsay Tisch was delighted. “Constantly striving to improve facilities to meet the needs of an increasing and aging population is essential” said Lindsay. “It is our role as a Foundation to fund capital works and rather than spending, we see this as an investment in our community. We are extremely grateful to receive these funds and whether it is put towards the replacement of our van or the refurbishment of consultant’s rooms for example, you have shown significant generosity in choosing to support Pohlen Hospital.”

trade-staff have been extremely accommodating and although demand across the building industry is at an all-time high, we are fortunate to have experienced minimal delay and disruption on-site.” Without the efforts of all these people to date the situation could well be different.

The exterior of the building is starting to closely resemble concept drawings, Hinuera Stone cladding is almost complete, and landscaping is now underway. The interior is undergoing its internal services and fit-offs which mean up to 60 site staff are working around each other on a daily basis. Interior walls are being plastered and painted, light and power switches fit-

ted, toilets, hand basins and facilities installed.

“There are strict and comprehensive processes that need to be followed” says Jason, “and as the go-to guy, I am fortunate to have teams working alongside me that ensure everything ticks along as it should.

Even though we have had frustrations – particularly with the weather, the general vibe across the board has been exceptional and workmanship of an extremely high standard. It’s a huge relief to have had each stage progress exactly as anticipated. This is a testament to planning from the outset.”

hen a few local women got together for a chat recently, an idea was born that would benefit the community in more ways than one.

Three Arawa Street businesswomen each have something unique to celebrate and after hearing of the upcoming art and media trip to Europe organised by Matamata College teacher, Jolene Rogerson, decided that by combining their talents and pooling their resources, a fabulously fun event could help them all.

Celebrating her first year in business, Sonya Church owner/operator of shEd, decided a fashion show featuring the latest in surf, skate and streetwear might be a neat idea so after discussing it with Marnie Sutherland from black Photography and Framing and Angela Dean from Blades Hair Design, the three conspired and hatched a plan!

Coincidentally, Angela had just confirmed the sale of her business so such an event they decided, would be a great opportunity for the new salon owner, Natasha Hellyer to enjoy a meet and greet with the locals and, at the same time, showcase some fabulous hair styling.

With further discussion, and given a number of the models are Matamata College students taking part in the European art and media experience, the ladies thought the event could be an excellent opportunity to raise funds towards the trip, so set a ticket price of $15. “Sonya, Natasha and I have organised some fantastic spot prizes, giveaways and raffles which will add a real festive atmosphere to the evening” says Marnie. “There will also be some neat silent auctions underway and ‘one night only’ discount offers that will no doubt be of huge help to those struggling with their Christmas shopping!”

New to the Nicholson family

aving worked his way through the ranks of a large Wellington car dealership that employed over a hundred people, Hamish Evans – literally at the top of his game, woke up one morning to an epiphany.

“I can’t really explain it” he says. “I just woke up one day and decided I didn’t want to be that guy! I had lived and worked in the same place for 15 years, my job was basically satisfying, my fiancé Nicky and I were your typical suburban family with our 2.5 children living in an inner city apartment, and life was ok. For whatever reason however, I needed a new challenge – a change and, thankfully, Nicky felt the same way.”

Heading for the Waikato which was central to family in the Bay of Plenty and Auckland areas, it was through a friend a conversation was initiated with Dean Nicholson who had an opening at the Matamata branch of the well-known Holden and Suzuki dealership. “To be honest, I hadn’t previously even visited Matamata” laughs Hamish! “It’s not so much that I imagined tumbleweed blowing down the street, but I was pleasantly surprised to arrive in such a vibrant and busy community that immediately presented a really positive and progressive sort of atmosphere. Accepting a position with Nicholson Auto’s immediately felt right and although it’s only been a couple of weeks, I am really enjoying meeting so many new people and being part of such a great team with huge community spirit. It’s a far cry from windy old Wellington!”

To the Matamata community

am Bill Anderson. Jackie, my wife of over 38 years, was diagnosed about three and a half years ago with a very rare neurodegenerative disease called Multiple System Atrophy/Cerebella. Medical science doesn’t know the cause of this debilitating disease and has not found a cure. We need your help.

The cerebellum controls all muscles in the body. Jackie’s memory and cognitive ability are not affected but her balance, speech, eye focus and hand movements have progressively worsened. In the future her breathing, heartbeat, and blood pressure will be affected too. Neurologists say the end for her will come in three years, if not sooner.

Specialists think Jackie’s only hope of getting better is to try a new therapy. Since this therapy is very new and considered experimental, our private health insurance provider does not cover its treatments.

Therefore, we need financial donations from you.

Jackie will receive a total of three treatments intravenously every two months in Matamata, where we live. Initially Jackie’s blood serum samples, which have been collected over the past months and frozen, will be sent to a US lab for testing to be sure her body is able to accept treatment. If all continues to look good, then the first dose will be sent via special courier to Matamata. Over a five month period, three treatments will be couriered to New Zealand. She will have multiple tests before and after each treatment to determine their effectiveness. If the tests indicate that Jackie would not benefit from continued treatments, all remaining funds from your donations will be contributed to the brain bank in Auckland. We hope for good results from this therapy and a longer life for Jackie. otary Matamata’s Concert by the Lake has been confirmed for its fourth year and organisers have secured the services of one of New Zealand’s premier musicians.

In what is thought to be a first for Matamata, the show will be headlined by New Zealand Silver Scroll winner and international performer Bic Runga. She will be joined on the specially-built pontoon by returning acts Two Many Chiefs and Jamie McDell, who has been a stalwart of the event since its inception.

Event director Don Stanley says it is a huge coup to secure such a top line-up of performers and Rotary Matamata are hoping that will attract a large crowd to attend the show. “Bic is arguably one of New Zealand’s finest female performers and having her perform at our event is tremendous. Concert by the Lake is now in its fourth year and each year we have built on the strengths from the previous year and we are very hopeful that this time around the line-up we have will allow us to attract a much larger crowd than in previous years” Don says.

Last year’s concert, which was headlined by The Lady Killers, saw almost 500 concert-goers enjoy an afternoon’s entertainment at the event, which is held on private property at Jondor Road.

“We are also thrilled to see Two Many Chiefs wanting to return – many people enjoyed their performance last year and it is great that they wanted to do an encore performance,” Don says. “And Jamie has been such a strong supporter of our event and the concept since the beginning so it is neat that she is back again – she has returned from Nashville where she has been recording new music so those returning to our event are likely to hear a new sound from Jamie.” Proceeds from the charity show will go to Westpac Rescue Helicopter and various youth-related charities.

“We believe this show is an excellent afternoon’s entertainment for our community,” Don says “but we really need the public of Matamata and beyond to get in behind it and support it.” With the cancellation of the Winery Tour for 2018, Don says this is an excellent opportunity for people to see top-class performers right on their own back doorstep. “This calibre of performers do not often come to small town New Zealand so we need people to get out and support our event,” Don says.

Starfish celebrate exciting new opportunities

oincidentally just one day short of their eighth anniversary, Starfish Social Services celebrated a huge achievement recently with the official opening of their new premises.

Established on November 23, 2009, the Starfish Social Services trust was formed after a group of community professionals saw a critical need for the establishment of an organisation committed to addressing adolescent issues. They wanted to provide an environment where youth and families could turn in times of need secure in knowing they would be accepted no matter what, listened to without bias and where appropriate, be referred to various professional services.”

On welcoming guests to the celebration Trust Chair, Daryl Anderson acknowledged fantastic support from the community and various funding entities but especially, the perseverance and leadership shown by Starfish Social Services manager, Jo McNaughton and the team that have ensured its continued success. “We have gone from humble beginnings renting space above the Post Office in Arawa Street, to successfully implementing excellent support networks that include everything from mentoring and counselling services to leadership opportunities and holiday programmes” said Daryl. “To have a team so committed in the long term health and success of our youth is incredibly rewarding and I have no doubt, in coming years with such a fantastic facility, Starfish will be a community hub that will continue to develop.” Caron Stewart.

Held annually, the Matamata Community Christmas Luncheon will be held at St John Hall on Rawhiti Ave from noon on Christmas Day. All the traditional trimmings will be served complete with pudding, Christmas crackers, tons of fun and an afternoon of entertainment.

“There are lots of reasons people choose to come along” says volunteer Sally Jenkins. “Some have no family in the area and enjoy the company, others decide it’s a neat way to ensure the kids have a fun day and for others, it’s just a neat opportunity to remember the reason for the season while enjoying a meal together as a community. It doesn’t really matter what the reason is - we welcome everyone and ab-

solutely encourage all who would like to join in.”

With local business and individual generosity, much of the food and little extras are sponsored or donated and organisers once again, are very grateful.

“Matamata is an extremely giving community” says Sally, “but there really is just something a little more special around this time of year. We don’t want anyone feeling awkward or embarrassed about coming along – it really is a “more the merrier” kind of a day. Local antique wins Waikato awards cknowledging 30 years since the inception of Waikato Patchworkers, a challenge was presented to members with several local ladies taking part.

Each of the members was given a laminated page from a magazine which they had to replicate in fabric. Any number of techniques or embellishments could be added but the finished 12 x 12” piece needed to be submitted along with the page for judging.

For Shirley Frew, an original member of the Waikato club and founder of the Matamata group, receiving a page called ‘Antiques left on the shelf’ made her laugh and although initially she had little idea of how best she would represent that, it didn’t take long before she decided to make it personal!

“Having a poke around in my sewing room I came across a few wee trinkets inherited from an aunt” says Shirley, “so decided to incorporate them. These things included a piece of tatting that although unfinished, was something my aunt had taught me. I also had a giggle when I realised I’m a bit of an antique myself so decided to put myself in there too! As I went, I thought of extra little things such as pearls – symbolic to 30 years, a miniature patchwork on my knee and other things I felt were relevant.”

With around 40 entrants in the competition, Shirley and a few of her Matamata patchworking friends travelled to the exhibition in Hamilton and were absolutely delighted to see the range of interpretations on a similar theme. “It was an excellent exhibition” says Shirley, “and we all

took inspiration from such a wealth of creativity.”

While viewing the exhibition, it wasn’t until the very end Shirley became aware her piece had been judged in the top three earning her a merit award. “It never occurred to me I would place” she laughs, “but I really was quite chuffed! Of course then, to hear I had also won the Viewer’s Choice award, I was absolutely delighted.”

Acknowledging 30 years of Kiwanis These accounts have enabled our club to see clearly and concisely where our finances are, what reserves we have, and where our succeeding emphasis should be.

They have often been accompanied with suggestions and comments, ideas of benefit for our club showing the amount of time that Garry has actively spent contacting

arry King was inducted as a member of the Kiwanis Club of Matamata in October 1987 with his name given special prominence when he became Treasurer, in 1994. At that meeting Garry presented the first of what has become so familiar for us – his financial statements and accounts.

Lance Corporal Alfred Denson Gould

O

ne hundred years ago the Battle of Passchendaele in Belgium was fought in October 1917. It is remembered for the landscape of mud and barbed wire and the hundreds of soldiers killed, both Allies and Germans.

About twelve young men from the Matamata district were killed there. One of these was Lance Corporal Alfred Denson Gould from Taihoa. He was born near Timaru in the South Island on 23 April 1889 and educated there. In 1907 when he was 18 he came to Taihoa with his parents, Benjamin and Elizabeth Gould and their other children to take up a farm in the Mangawhero Settlement now called Taihoa. He worked as a farmer and joined the Piako Mounted Rifles and the Territorial Reserves.

When the First World War was declared he enrolled on 26 September 1916 in the 1st Battalion of the Auckland Regiment, New Zealand Expeditionary Force (NZEF) and was given the regimental number 38377. He was promoted to Lance Corporal in the following November and before he was sent overseas he married Emily Frances Brindle in 1916.Alf trained at Trentham and Featherstone and travelled on the troopship “Aparima” which left Wellington on 16 February 1917 and arrived in England on 2 May 1917. He did further training at Sling Camp.

In a letter to his sister Frances in New Zealand he wrote: “Things are very bad in England in regards to the food for it is getting scarce and the soldiers are the only ones that receive regular meals and they are not plentiful. We have rye bread for it is the only sort procurable but it is very wholesome and good.” In the same letter he asked his sisters: “If you have time you might knit me a pair of mittens for on a windy day it is very cold on the hands”.

Alf was sent to France in June and joined the 1st Battalion, Auckland Infantry Regiment. In October he fought in the battle of Broodseinde where they tried to seize the Gravenstafel Spur, a low ridge in front of the village of Passchendaele, Belgium. It was hoped that they would take the village in the next battle for their winter line. The soldiers had been training to overcome the numerous German concrete “pill-boxes’ in the sector. They attacked before dawn on the 4 October as part of a major advance.

Alfred Gould was fighting in this battle and lost his life at the age of 28 years. He is buried at Tyne Cot Cemetery, east of Ieper (formerly Ypres), Belgium. His British War Medal and Victory Star were sent to his wife in New Zealand. His name is remembered on the Matamata Cenotaph in front of the Matamata Memorial Centre and on the Taihoa Hall Roll of Honour.

groups, schools and organisations, initiating and seeking ways where the club can be of assistance. Garry has given outstanding service to Kiwanis over the past 30 years.

In the 1990s Garry planned and upgraded part of the Firth Primary playground, ran a computer evening, upgraded the Kiwanis Campomatic and its storage, and in 1999, made the first of our Web Pages. That same year he obtained and placed a mural in Country Lodge, and Heather Lea Home. Of particular significance was the introduction of “Books in Homes” where through Garry’s efforts and supported by our Club, he began a scheme at Firth Primary that gave a book to every student in the school – for some, the first book they had ever owned.

Over the years the stronger emphasis of our club has been giving funds to assist groups and individuals, with this money almost entirely raised from the sale of used batteries. Along with Arthur and Ken, Garry has offered huge amounts of time and organisation to developing and extending this project contacting firms, collecting the batteries, arranging cartage, printing certificates of appreciation and maintaining goodwill with suppliers; which has resulted in our club being in a sound financial position to assist so many community activities. Again, for these funds to be used effectively, there needs to be easy communication with our community, and through his initiatives Garry has established and extended our role in helping and assisting so many groups and individuals.

This includes the donation and naming of the Kiwanis Quiet Room, movable reclining chairs, shower chairs and a volumetric pump at Pohlen Hospital, a large timing clock at Swimzone, battery operated rescue lights for Matamata Volunteer Fire Brigade, updating our club brochure, bookmarks for schools and the library. Mata-

mata schools have also benefited with apparatus, play equipment, classroom supplies, cameras, outdoor requirements and amphitheatre. More recently, Caroline Mason appreciated the financial guidance that Garry provided with the Threads across the Pacific project, and the purchase of new sewing machines.

In 2010 and 2015 Garry was awarded Kiwanian of the Year in recognition of the many hours devoted to his community, particularly for his commitment to the Batteries Project. Garry has also received numerous Kiwanian of the Month Awards over the years, probably sufficient to paper his office walls!

The most important part of Kiwanis is the work we do in the community, and here too Garry has taken his full share, attending working bees, Tower Runs, assisting with raffle sales, wood chops and deliveries, promotions for organisations, and liaising with our PRA. Garry – you exemplify all that Kiwanis stands for, you have always given more than your share and what you have done has made a difference to so many people.

We really are fortunate that you have been a member of our club for thirty years, and you have fully earned your Legion of Honour acknowledgement. Supplied.

100g butter 2/3 cup (195g) caster sugar 1 tsp vanilla essence 2 eggs, lightly beaten 1 cup (150g) self-raising flour 1/3 cup cocoa, sifted 1/2 teaspoon bicarbonate soda 1/2 cup (125ml) milk

Chocolate buttercream frosting:

1/4 cup (60g) unsalted butter, softened 1 1/4 cups (195g) icing sugar, sifted 1 tbsp cocoa, sifted 1 tbsp milk

Method:

Preheat oven to 180°C (160°C fan-forced).

Line cupcake tins with cases.Using a mixer, cream butter, sugar and vanilla until creamy and fluffy. Gradually add eggs and mix until just combined.

Combine flour, cocoa and bicarbonate soda. Add to creamed mixture with milk.

Beat until just combined. Spoon mixture into liners until each case is one-third full.

Bake for 15-20 minutes. When cool decorate with chocolate buttercream frosting.

Salt dough or paint handprints

This is a gorgeous gift for grandparents, aunties and uncles or mums and dads and its really simple! To make dough prints just mix one cup of salt with one cup of flour and half a cup of water. Knead until mixed and smooth.

If it gets a bit sticky just add a little bit more flour. Roll out into a nice circle and press your hand (or foot) into it firmly. It’s a good idea to make a hole at the top (push a straw through) so once its baked you can thread some ribbon through for hanging on the wall. Lay on greaseproof paper and bake at 100°C for about two hours.

Theatrical Thinking

We’re fast racing towards the end of the year but there are still a few good productions to see including Tauranga’s Detour Theatre, in the Historic Village, the Paul Elliot comedy “Exit Laughing” about a group of ladies celebrating the life of their recently departed Bridge Partner.Also in Tauranga the Alan Ayckbourn comedy “Seasons Greetings” about a family gathering at Christmas, is on at 16th Avenue Theatre.

In Morrinsville the musical revue “Forbidden Broadway’s Greatest Hits”, a satirical re-write of some of Broadways best loved songs, is at Morrinsville Little Theatre as a dinner and show presentation. Over at Cambridge repertory’s Gaslight Theatre the comedy “Death and Taxes” is on, also as a dinner and show combination. In Hamilton, at Riverlea Theatre, the Christmas dinner theatre show is “Boobs the Musical, the World according to Ruth Wallis”, an R18 musical revue and celebration of the risque songs of 60’s jazz and cabaret singer Ruth Wallis. Plenty of scope for a pre-Christmas night out but

College sports round-up The Matamata College Junior Girls’ Volleyball team have enjoyed a strong season in the Waikato competition. The squad of eight players were quite young with only three Year 10 students in the group. From the early stages of the competition it was clear that Hamilton Girls’ High School, Te Awamutu College and Matamata were the three strongest teams. These three schools enjoyed regular close contests among themselves and none of the schools were able to go unbeaten throughout the competition.

Entering the final night, Matamata faced Te Awamutu in the semi-finals. The Matamata girls began strongly with solid passing allowing some strong early attacks from captain Olivia Goodwin. Excellent serving from the whole Matamata team also helped build a good lead which Matamata maintained through to the end of the set.

Roles were reversed in the second set as Te Awamutu started well and built some early pressure. They attacked strongly and took the set decisively. In the deciding third set, the Matamata girls fell behind early but fought hard to close the margin. The final few points were very tense with Te Awamutu taking out the match. The fight from the Matamata girls was most impressive against an older team who had played together last year. In the play-off match for 3rd place, Matamata comfortably defeated Hillcrest High School to earn the bronze medal.

Meanwhile the rest of the theatre world is still busy as this is the time of year when the younger members of the theatre clubs start rehearsing their youth productions, which usually rehearse and are performed during the school holidays.

Hamilton’s Riverlea Theatre is preparing Disney’s “Aladdin Jr.” for production in January. Over in Tauranga 16th Avenue Theatre is working on “Jack and the Beanstalk” while Tauranga Musical Theatre presents “The Wizard of Oz”.

In Rotorua the Little Theatre is presenting the panto/comedy “Robin Hood”, written by local author Steve English, for production at the Shambles Theatre in January.

At this time of the year all theatre groups are finalizing their programmes for next year, and audition notices are already appearing for their first production of next year.

So, if you are interested in getting involved, watch the newspapers for the audition notices and give it a go.

Fishing Report ow who would have thought three weeks ago we would be looking for a bit of rain come the end of November? Here we are though and the farmers would love a few mls.

The local streams and rivers are looking an absolute picture at the moment and are a joy to fish. How about getting the kids and/or hubby a spinning rod and reel for Christmas and get them out after work for a fish. Not only might they catch a feed but it will get them off the street and out for a bit of bonding!

Talking to Glenn Skinner, trout guide in Rotorua, he tells me there has been some very nice fish coming in off Rotoiti. The district is hosting a Clubs NZ comp and at the moment the winning fish is 3.75kg. That’s a beauty aye! Glenn also said to mention that the Ohau channel is producing some nice trout. On Lake Tarawera the quality of fish is still a bit patchy but improving each week.

Further to the south to Taupo and the rivers are looking a picture. It is now the time of year to get the lighter lines out and the imitive fly patterns. My info line from down there tells me the Tauranga/Taupo is the one to head to. Now here’s a story hot off the press – my man in Taupo, Ken Duncan, tells me last week a magnificent trout of 18lb was caught jigging on the lake. Now that’s a fish!

To the sea and it would have to be said that the fishing off the west coast at the moment is as good as it gets. Dwayde Pinny who runs three charter boats out of Kawhia tells me all three are fishing in and around the 45mtrs of water. Over the past few days they have been loading up with limit bags in quick time. Dwayde tells me many of the fish are in double figures and some up and over that magical 20lb mark.

Just ask the team that went out from the college, they had a great time.

Up to the Coromandel. Well at the moment the fishing is almost ridiculous. Many anglers are going out and returning in as little as two hours with a chilly bin of beautiful fat snapper. Now my info tells me the fishing is better down the Wilsons Bay end of the gulf than the Coromandel end. Some of the snapper are now starting to spawn so even be prepared to let the odd one go if they look a bit shabby. As our son Josh will tell you, there are some very big kingi’s in the forms at the moment. He was spoiled the other day by a beauty.

Over to the Mercury Bay area and John Ellwood has been getting some lovely snapper along the southern end of Great Mercury. John said it was also worth mentioning that if the commercial scallop boat boys are harvesting with their drags, follow them around and when they life to turn, drop a soft bait in behind them. Over in the Bay of Plenty there has been quite a few snapper in reasonably close. I have had reports of people having quite good results in about 20-22m of water. Out further at Mayor and Motiti it’s been a bit patchy. Some reasonable snapper being caught at the change of light along the edges of the foul ground.

This weekend sees our Matamata Fishing Club’s Christmas December comp – come along and win a Christmas ham and say hi to Santa while you’re there!
