Warm heart, cold head?

A

fter supporting Shave for a Cure, Leukaemia and Blood Cancer (LBC) New Zealand’s signature fundraising event, there may be a few students of Matamata College sporting extra warm beanies over coming weeks!

Organised by the Wellness Committee, around a dozen students put their locks up for auction last week with winning bidders having the opportunity to shave the head of their prize. Wendy Ross and Natalie Clothier, stylists at UBU, also donated their time and expertise for those a little more discerning!

“We were stoked with the number of students putting their hand up to participate” says Leader, Patrick Roskam. “Many of us know people living with cancer and when you put it into perspective, shaving our hair is a small price to pay when the money we raise can be of such significant help to the organisation. Collectively we have raised around $2,000 and offer our appreciation to everyone who has contributed.”

LBC is the national charity dedicated to supporting patients and their families living with a blood cancer or a related blood condition. They don’t receive government funding, but with your help, can continue to fund core services which include patient support programmes, research, information, awareness, and advocacy. Caron Stewart.

Katie Fountain was one of around a dozen Matamata College students who shaved their hair to benefit Leukaemia and Blood Cancer New Zealand this week. Her beautiful long locks were carefully cut by UBU owner/operator, Wendy Ross, and will be donated to Freedom of Wigs, an organisation benefitting cancer patients who have lost their hair.

Dear Matamata, This Friday will mark one year since our beautiful Ellie passed away unexpectedly at school. Even though the circumstances were traumatic, we are so thankful that we were there as a family and school community to be with her as she left.

She had an infectious spirit and was an incredibly loving daughter and sister and we’ll forever miss her and wonder why this has had to happen to our family.

This year has been indescribably difficult and an absolute challenge to live through, however we’ve done so with the tremendous support of all of you - our community. From meals being dropped off to people checking in on us at all hours of the day and night to just hearing people use her name when we chatted all helped

As National Volunteer Week ends we are thrilled to shout out to the hundreds of volunteers who support Dementia Waikato. The Waikato community donated over $31,000 during the Dementia Waikato Fundraising Appeal in May. What amazing people we have in this region!

Every cent will go directly to providing services to the hundreds of individuals and

families we support in the Waikato to live well with dementia. On behalf our Clients and Trustees, we say a massive thank you to everyone who donated, and to the more than 150 volunteers and local coordinators who stood – often cold – outside supermarkets and other stores to collect for the cause. Dementia Waikato is the only organisation providing local dementia wellbeing services in the greater Waikato.

We are all about keeping it local; local staff making local visits to people at home, local donations used in local services. Thanks again to the thousands who gave to help people to live well, with dementia, at home. Thank you for supporting your community. We are humbled.

Best present ever!

Matamata resident Mary Smith had a wonderful time celebrating her 104th birthday with a family luncheon.

B

orn on June 19, 1914, Mary Smith may possibly be the most grown up person in Matamata! She celebrated her 104th birthday with friends and family recently and, as pretty as a picture, enjoyed every second of it.

Mary started her life in Hautapu and had three brothers which included a set of twins always known as curly and straighty by the many that couldn’t tell them apart except for their hair! It was in 1939 she married Fred in Te Aroha and together they farmed at Ngarua. The couple had five children over a period of 18 years and after retiring, moved to Tauranga. Later they re-retired and built a home in Mata-

mata which, they felt, was conveniently central to all their family and brought them closer to old friends.

After Fred passed away, Mary continued to be involved in Friendship Circle and the local Catholic Church. Incredibly, even with almost ten and a half decades under her belt, Mary still lives independently, enjoys exceptionally good health with her only niggles being a little hard of hearing and sight. Her family have always been her world and, as described by her daughter, Mary was a great mum through and through. Home has always been her castle and she loves nothing more than pottering about – although these days, she does accept help with her garden, housework and

personal care and daily, enjoys a wee afternoon siesta!

In explaining her secret to good, healthy longevity, Mary grins when she says she is probably just lucky to have the good genes of her Swiss heritage. “Maybe a wee glass of port in the evening contributes too” laugh her family!

Having managed to get to 104 years of age without ever holding a drivers licence, Mary is the first to acknowledge everyone who has been so kind over the years, especially after losing Fred. “I have been blessed with a wonderful family” she says, “and feel pretty good for my age!”

Celebrating 60 years since lodge build began

A

fter the restoration of the Chateau in 1948, attempts were made to hire out less pretentious accommodation by upgrading some of the old Whakapapa village huts and providing the basic necessities of a camping ground – and later, a caravan park. This wasn’t particularly appealing to the Matamata skiing community who wanted a little more ‘pleasure with their leisure’.

Frequently gathering at the Manly Milk bar to vent and share their protest, it was in 1955 over milkshakes a decision would be made that would shape the lives for years to come of many sports-minded enthusiasts from the region. The original ‘think tank’ group was made up of Don Stanley, Nowell Jagger, Tony Trower and Robin (Bu) Dunnet and together, they decided to form a club and build a hut on Ruapehu.

Chaired by Nowell, a public meeting was held on June 26, 1957. An interim committee was elected and a fortnight later on July 10, the Matamata Ski Club was formed with the first officers elected. They were Don Stanley - President, Nowell Jagger -

Secretary, Eric Noble - Treasurer, and Tony Trower - Club Captain. Committee members were Brian Hickson, Jack Stanley, John Arnold, Ross Carmichael, Jackie Tapper, Max Brown and Roy Hemsley.

Think big (before that of a later New Zealand government), had become the order of the day and the initial hut idea was superseded with visionary thoughts of a ski lodge more befitting of Matamata at the Top o’ the Bruce road in the Iwikau Village on the Whakapapa side of Mt Ruapehu. A final design was accepted and presented to a general meeting of members on March 19, 1958. This plan was subsequently adopted along with the estimated four thousand pounds required for materials and furnishing. There was no question that all work would be done by voluntary labour, with many fundraising initiatives that included everything from street produce stalls to Pig in the Barrow raffles “game” evenings and dances to pay for materials.

Then, although application to the Tongariro National Park board for a site had been approved, the plans were not. After

considerable redesigning, they were again submitted and accepted in September 1958. Nowell, Tony and Don had selected Lot 5 at Iwikau Village from a limited number of options. Their prime criteria was the relatively easy 250m walk on a Friday night, peace and quiet away from the road and a good weather truck access route.

Just weeks later over labour Weekend, the first work party was underway. Along with core committee members, the time came where skill diversity was required and before long, new and non members found their niche supporting working parties, fund raising, meal provision and the organisation of social activities. At the end of 1959 the end was in sight and with the target opening scheduled for July 2, 1960, renewed vigour saw this goal achieved.

Seven years later, the suggestion of a games room addition was made and again, with voluntary labour, this was underway in 1969. The extension added approximately 25% to the top floor area and added valuable space for a drying room, ski storage and maintenance area below.

In 1999 a room was built for the Custodian

who to this day, is on site seven days per week. As well as organising duty rosters, the custodian prepares weekly menus for guest’s breakfast and evening meals which are included within booking fees. Sleeping 22, the Matamata Ski Lodge is an incredibly unique experience and a fantastic way to meet new friends, enjoy a family getaway or take advantage of the all year round activities such as walking, tramping, mountain biking and of course, skiing.

With everything provided, all you’ll need is sheets or a sleeping bag, and your own pillowslip and towel. Then, after a day on the mountain and a short walk home, you can kick back and enjoy a home cooked meal, mulled wine and a roaring fire – who could want for more?!

Matamata Ski Club’s strong family foundation continues to grow and, with the dedication and commitment still very prevalent today, the future of the club is solid. A lil bitta country right on your doorstep W hen approached by the past committee to become involved with organising the New Zealand Country Music Star Awards, you could say the decision was literally tappin’ and tipping!

Kevin and Kay Tappin and Michael and Ashley Tipping have in fact, now been committee members for the past three years and respectively hold positions of Chair, assistant Treasurer, Convenor and Secretary. They have each in their own right, celebrated years of participation, awards and accolades within country music and collectively, have decided it’s time to give back. “It’s ironic how we all met to be honest” laughs Kevin! “I had been involved in Matamata Country Music Club for as long as I can remember and when Michael joined as a teenager, we became good friends. Later Ashley joined and after becoming close with Michael, the two organised our local spectacular. My daughter had to pull out so to take her place at short notice, Michael’s mum Kay agreed to fill in and travelled from Kaitaia. We were thrilled, particularly as she had been singing and performing very successfully at various awards throughout the country music scene.

With cupid’s arrow striking both couples, country music is now not only very much a family affair, but something they fully support each other with individually. Kevin is a member of ‘Cut Above’, a band backing many club and awards performers, has set up and runs most judging and scoring systems around the regions, is head scrutineer at awards he is not playing in, and is part of Tap ‘N’ Tyme; a duo act with his wife Kay. The pair have celebrated much success including winning the duo at Phoenix Awards in

Along with many competitive award successes, an absolute highlight for Kay was being selected for the Trans Tasman Entertainer of the Year Awards held at Norfolk Island in 2014. She is now a judge at most North Island Country Music Awards.

Michael is the elected president of the New Zealand Country Music Association, and alongside Kevin, a committee member, Ashley was co-opted on as Publicity Officer. The Tipping’s are also Convenor and Secretary of the Waikato Association.

Although the four have taken on considerable regional responsibility, Matamata Country Music remains the heart of their involvement and with the 2018 New Zealand Country Music Star Awards approaching, their latest fundraising initiative is a one day festival held right here in Matamata. Locals will have the opportunity to enjoy top class artists and performers who have offered their support to build the genre and support the vision of country music. “Country music certainly isn’t about tumbleweeds and lost dogs” laughs Kevin! “We’re out to provide an awesome festival with high calibre guests sure to entertain.

The festival has been confirmed for July 14th at the Matamata College hall and you can bet we’re gonna raise the roof! Guests include The Toner Sisters, Brendan Dugan, Joy Adams, Cooper’s Run and more – including the 2017 NZ Star Awards overall winners. Local lunatic celebrates alien recording

atamata teenager Hannah Allen had a taste of fame recently when the single ‘Aliens’ was released and made available for purchase via iTunes, Spotify and You Tube. The song, one of three written by The Lunatics – a band of which she is the drummer, was recorded over two days at a studio in Auckland.

The unique thing about this band however, is that not only do all four members have Tourette Syndrome, they also live in different parts of the country! With guitarist Ethan in Auckland, Hannah in Matamata, Analise in Christchurch and Ava in Invercargill, practices as you can imagine, are near on impossible. Add to that a confirmed performance at the recent We Are One concert in Auckland alongside infamous artists such as Dave Dobbyn and you

might begin to understand their challenge!

“We were selected by the Tourette’s Association of New Zealand” says Hannah, “after the Play it Strange Trust offered support to Tourette’s and other neuro-diverse disorder organisations with proceeds of the concert. We all have the syndrome, all love music and were extremely excited to have been given such a neat opportunity.

It was difficult learning the songs via skype but with my parents taking me to Auckland, I was able to get in a practice with Ethan which definitely helped. The four of us had our first practice together the morning of the concert and because Analise and Ava had written ‘Aliens’, the song we were recording, and Ethan had written ‘Sometimes it is hard to forget someone that you love’, it didn’t take long

before we nailed them. Unfortunately we ran out of time to perfect our third song, ‘Get outta here’ but while performing the other two, the audience were amazing and we were buzzing!”

Following the concert, The Lunatics thoroughly enjoyed the recording experience even though there was a lot of waiting laughs Hannah! “It was really interesting to learn how it’s all done, especially recording all our individual parts and then putting them all together for the finished single. Our song, Aliens, is basically about how we believe we are perceived by the world and we’re hoping people will listen to it, like it and buy it! As a band, we are currently fundraising to perform at the Canterbury Youth Awards in Christchurch at the end of August and the 2018 Camp Twitch, an annual event for New Zealand kids living with Tourette’s.”

Pohlen bringing back the locals

n behalf of Pohlen Foundation, fundraising administrator Charlene Conner was delighted to welcome guests to the annual Ladies Luncheon held on Friday. She acknowledged everyone who purchased tickets supporting the event with particular thanks to major sponsors, Life Pharmacy and The Red Barn, before introducing Pohlen Foundation Trustee, Sue Bruce followed by deputy Chair of Pohlen Hospital Board, Leonie Tisch. After a sumptuous lunch, Foundation Trustee, Liz Atherton introduced a well known ex-Walton girl who describes herself as “a small town girl that lives in Auckland!” This is a small part of her story.

While teaching at Hinuera School some years ago, Liz Blackwell can remember a phone call that left her absolutely sobbing.

Her tears were of shock, confusion and joy all at the same time. It was however, a call that changed her life.

Liz and her husband Paul had made the decision not to have children given the likelihood of passing on Muscular Dystrophy (MD), a hereditary condition suffered by her mum. They had recently sold Paul’s store, Barry & Hastings, and although initially looking at a PaperPlus franchise, had confirmed their purchase of New World Matamata. It was also around the time the couple had been advised that MD gene

testing had become accessible and Liz decided to proceed. Four months later, she got the call that she did not carry the gene - so of course, couldn’t pass it on! Paul and Liz were ecstatic and a few months later, began to plan their family.

After the arrival of their first child James, the couple then welcomed their second son, Tom, 22 months later. Life was busy – and it was about to escalate! The opportunity of buying Albany Pac‘n’Save had arisen and the Blackwell’s decided, successfully, to go for it. Then, after selling New World, managing a complete relocation, opening New Zealand’s largest and busiest supermarket that peaked at around 500 staff, and already parenting two children, Kate and Matthew were welcomed to the family just 14 months apart!

As the children grew, so did their interests and with James very keen to join the basketball league, Paul and Liz took the opportunity of getting to know the game.

Their involvement as a family soon grew to watching the national basketball league from a corporate box, then contributing to sponsorship and ultimately, taking up the opportunity of purchasing a share in the New Zealand Breakers with the hope of making a difference. Sadly however, with the team near the bottom of the NBL ladder, the co-owners opting out and various

It was in February this year, a consortium headed by former NBA player Matt Walsh became the majority shareholders with Paul and Liz retaining a 5% share.

Although incredibly media shy and not one for recognition, the couple since selling the Breakers, continue with a myriad of philanthropic opportunities and feel extremely humble regarding their success.

“We love our life - albeit busy, and feel so blessed. Thank you all for having me and I hope you’ve enjoyed a little of my story from here to there!”

Liz was a compelling speaker and while sharing personal and family anecdotes and experiences, captured the attention of all fortunate enough to have been in attendance. The 12th annual Pohlen Foundation Ladies Luncheon was indeed, another resounding success!

A roar for local lioness

hen Cambridge Lion, Peter Knox welcomed Carol Curtis to the stage, it was with a grin he said he hoped her fate wouldn’t equal that of Kura and Amira, the two Auckland Zoo lions that had to be euthanized recently! Of course raucous laughter erupted but, in all seriousness, Carol’s investiture as the 2018/19 president of Matamata Lions is a huge milestone for the local service club who, this year, also celebrates its 60 year anniversary.

For Carol, the first female president of Matamata Lions, it is a position she is very proud of and she has full confidence that with such a great team alongside her, an exciting year will follow. “Like the ethos of Lions, I strongly believe in our community” says Carol, “and relish the opportunity to give back. Since my induction eight years ago, I have been involved in various Lions initiatives and have the utmost respect for what we can all achieve together. Everything we make goes back into our community and its incredibly rewarding to have

been able to help so many people along the way. Matamata Lions is a real team effort and regardless of age, gender or circumstances, everyone just rolls up their sleeves and gets things done.”

Having married and raised their family here in Matamata, Carol and her husband Kevin are no strangers to voluntary assistance. Along with her involvement in Lions, Carol is also the Liaison Officer for the St John Area Committee, the Shoot Secretary at Matamata Gun Club, and on various committee’s including the Art Society and Mid-year Christmas festival for Pohlen. She is employed locally at Blandford Lodge and in her “spare” time, creates special occasion cakes and cards. Kevin is the Chief Fire Officer at the Matamata Volunteer Fire Brigade.

Peter worked for the Ministry of Transport and Vehicle Testing New Zealand from November 1977 to August 2008 – almost 30 years and, during this time, became highly respected personally, and as a vehicle inspector. He joined the Lions Club of Matamata in January 1997, was vice President for four years and President in the 2005/06 year. Peter has also chaired the Health and Welfare committee, the Youth and Slinks committee twice, and the Projects committee for six years. In his 21 years of membership so far, Peter has always been one of the club’s most enthusiastic and productive members, and has seldom missed a working bee or any club project.

Peter and his wife Pauline are legends in their work with the casualty calf collection and have looked after the phones and rosters for many years. Apart from his huge commitment to Lions, Peter has also been very involved with the Matamata Memorial RSA, contributing endless hours in supporting the organisation.

In recognition of Peter’s outstanding service to Lions, and to the Matamata Community, the Board resolved that he be awarded the Lloyd Morgan Trust Honoured recognition. The framed certificate and Honoured Recognition pin was presented, on behalf of Matamata Lions, by immediate past President, Garry Stanley.In recognition of her incredible support to Peter, President Carol Curtis also presented Pauline with a beautiful bouquet of flowers.

Celebrating Matariki cuisine

aking the opportunity to enter the Waikato Matariki Dish Challenge for 2018, Cherie Nathan, Head Chef at Redoubt Bar & Eatery was excited about planning a meal that would celebrate traditional Maori cuisine.

Basically the rules were simple. The competition dish had to include a minimum of three ingredients sourced within a small local radius and fit within one of two categories, one for restaurants and the other for cafes.

Cherie was keen to create a dish that was in keeping with Matariki, the celebration of the Maori New Year. “Matariki is a time where families gather and reflect on the past and the future” says Cherie. “So in deciding on a dish, I was keen to keep it traditional and celebrate the earthy, natural flavours provided with hunted and gathered foods and edible plants. My husband is of Maori/Tongan descent and I remember one year, a family Christmas celebration with a lot of traditional food left me thinking, one day I’m going to recreate that.”

If you don’t count water laughs Cherie, the three locally sourced ingredients contributing to her challenge dish are pork bones, watercress and pikopiko, the tip of a fern plant. These ingredients along with moimoi potatoes and doughboys are the basis of her challenge dish, Pork Duo

Boilup. As well as pulled pork, roasted pork belly with crunchy crackle floats in a flavoursome reduced broth.

Feedback since releasing the dish on June 9 has been really positive says Cherie. “Many have complimented the strong, peppery flavours and earthy feel to the dish which is what I was hoping to achieve. Obviously we don’t know when the judges will sneak in and try it but with my team nailing preparation and plating, I am confident that every serving will be consistent with my vision, and a real “Matariki” dining experience.”

Available for lunch or dinner, Pork Duo Boilup will be served until July 14 when the competition closes. It really is something different and if you haven’t previously had the opportunity to try traditional Maori cuisine, there’s no better reason to drop in and do it – take it from me, its delicious!

Coinciding also with the new winter menu at Redoubt, Cherie promises that within coming weeks, fresh ideas and revamped favourites are sure to tempt the most discerning diner - including braised Beef Cheeks that after 12 hours of roasting are sure to whet the appetite!

As the gun goes, Matamata’s Dale Ertel is out of the starting gates during the 500TT at the World Masters Games at Avantidrome, Cambridge last year. As an avid cyclist – particularly with sprint events, Dale is looking forward to competing in the Cambridge Drone Masters Two Day Track Cycling Carnival over the weekend of September 8 and 9. A microchip identification tag is a small computer chip containing information linking you to your cat. The chip is inserted under the skin and takes only a few minutes. It will not cause your cat discomfort or allergic reactions. Because the chip is skin deep you may be

With the most recent World Masters Games, Track Cycling event held in 2017 at the Avantidrome in Cambridge, a group of keen masters cyclists got together to discuss the merit of organising a competitive event that would attract masters riders from around the regions and the thrill of getting more people more involved more of the time! After throwing some ideas around, all agreed that a two day track carnival would be a great idea and as long as it didn’t clash with other cycling events, would be very likely to draw interest from both sprint and endurance enthusiasts. After publishing a ‘teaser’ post on social media, their assumption was right and enquiries came from as far as Christchurch up to Northland. With the UCI World Masters Championships to be held in Manchester England in October, it seemed September was the opportune time so the weekend of the 8th and 9th was confirmed at the Avantidrome.

“Masters are aged 35 years and over” says co-organiser, Dale Ertel, “and at many cycling events if you are knocked out in the heats, the rest of the event is generally as a spectator. So by designing a mixed program format, we can ensure all riders participate in four events which will see qualifying in the morning and finals in the

Matamata host Interschool shooting event

M

atamata Gun Club was pleased to host the annual Interschool Shoot recently with 15 school’s participating. Approximately 135 shooters travelled to Matamata and thankfully, were treated to awesome weather and fantastic organisation. Teams had 50 targets overall for single rise, points score and single barrel events. “There was noticeably more females taking part” said Matamata Gun Club Shoot Secretary Carol Curtis, “which was great to see. Parents did an outstand-

ing job helping out and manning the kitchen, and various school’s took care of umpiring and reffing. It was an extremely successful day.”

Rainbow Kidz celebrate Matariki

ainbow Kidz staff, children and families held a special thanks giving evening on Friday with singing and dancing, face painting, fun and a fabulous feed! The evening celebrated Matariki and gave families an understanding of what it is all about.

Matariki is the Māori name for the cluster of stars also known as the Pleiades. It rises in mid-winter and for many Māori, it heralds the start of a new year. Matariki literally means the ‘eyes of god’ (mata ariki) or ‘little eyes’ (mata riki). According to myth, when Ranginui, the sky father, and Papatūānuku, the earth mother, were separated by their children, the god of the winds, Tāwhirimātea, became so angry that he tore out his eyes and threw

them into the heavens.

Traditionally, Matariki was a time to remember those who had died in the last year. But it was also a happy event – crops had been harvested and seafood and birds had been collected. With plenty of food in the storehouses, Matariki was a time for singing, dancing and feasting.

Matariki, or Māori New Year celebrations were once popular, but stopped in the 1940s. In 2000, they were revived.

Only a few people took part at first, but in just a few years thousands were honouring the ‘New Zealand Thanksgiving’. A special feature of Matariki celebrations is the flying of kites – according to ancient custom they flutter close to the stars.

Celebrating Life Membership awards

S

o as not to draw too much attention to a plan secretly hatched by the committee of Matamata Croquet Club, President Allan Elliot personally rang two specific members just to make sure they would be in attendance at a recent club day. They were about to be awarded special acknowledgement and Allan had a sneaky suspicion they would be a little overwhelmed.

He was right. In fact Lyall and Pat Polglase were so surprised, they were literally

lost for words and needed a wee sit down!

“These two epitomise what a good member should be” said Allan. “They’re loyal, dedicated and supportive. They have always been positive and constructive particularly with the relocation project. They regularly appeared to check on progress and were always complimentary and appreciative of what was being done for the good of the club and our members.”

Family historians to celebrate 40 years

lizabeth Barlow placed an advertisement in one of the local newspapers in April 1978 calling for those interested in genealogy and family history to an evening meeting to be held in her home.

The inaugural meeting of the Matamata Group of Genealogists was held on 11th May with about 27 people attending. In the following September the group was officially affiliated to the New Zealand Society of Genealogists. Elizabeth was the first Convenor and continued in this role until 1984.

Meetings were initially held at the Matamata College Library and then at the Anglican Church Lounge, where the branch still has its meetings to this day.

The Matamata Public Library, with the cooperation of Patsy Harley, a former librarian, played a part in allowing the branch to deposit its vast book and microfiche resources and evening meetings were held there. Members and the public were able to access these resources during library opening hours. It is only over the last few years that these resources have been removed from the library owing to

space constraints.

Some of the local projects that the branch has conducted are headstone transcribing at the Matamata Cemetery, copying and indexing of school registers, indexing of funeral director’s records, a collection of local books, school jubilee and general, also indexed.

The internet and email play an important role in research today with results being achieved far quicker than forty years ago when post was the one of the means of communication and time of several weeks was involved between replies to correspondence.

DNA testing is one of the hottest topics today with many people finding new family members and connections.

The Branch is to celebrate this milestone with an anniversary luncheon function on Sunday 16th September 2018. Theme for this occasion is ‘Where Were You in 1978, What Were You Doing’. Pat started playing croquet first although it wasn’t long before Lyall also gave it a go. “I guess the two games are of a similar principle” says Lyall, “although with croquet, you don’t have to walk the miles between holes! Pat loved the game and once I went along, I too thought it was great fun.” Acknowledging Lyall’s eagle eye and astutely tactical brain, Allan says he and many others have learned a lot from him with his fair play and integrity. “He really is a joy to play with” said Allan, “and his sportsmanship is of the highest standard. Of course Pat with her impeccable attire never ceases to amaze us also! She leads the way on Melbourne Cup dress up day and, like Lyall, is always extremely supportive of our club and activities. Re-

gardless of the job at hand, Pat shows a keen interest and always with a smile.”

Consistently offering their fair share of assistance, particularly at the recent paspalum plucking working bee, Allan added that the couple’s honestly, loyalty, personality and determination certainly contributed to them becoming such popular and appreciated members of Matamata Croquet Club.

“There is absolutely no doubt that the club and its members owe you both a great deal, which is why we would like to show our respect and admiration with the presentation of this certificate acknowledging Life Membership of our club” said Allan. “It is indeed a very great pleasure for me, on behalf of all our members, to acknowledge two of the finest people you will ever meet.

Theatrical Thinking

Just had a very busy couple of weeks catching up on new productions in our area. First up was an interesting drama at Cambridge’s Gaslight Theatre called “Blind Eye”. This play opens with a policeman talking with an elderly man who has just been attacked and robbed in the street. The man lives with his blind wife and because of his injuries a home help is offered. As the play develops, slowly in Act 1 and much faster in Act 2, a new story unfolds involving possible incest and murder. As the policeman says things are not always what they seem and between right and wrong there are shades of grey. An excellent production with a stand out performance by the actress portraying the blind wife, she captured the body language and mannerisms of a blind person perfectly.

Working towards peace

I should think that President Donald Trump would agree with this statement after his efforts in Korea. At least he and the Korean leaders have taken the initiative to work towards peace instead of heading towards war.

If everyone cultivated a tendency towards peace, instead of allowing differences to build and exaggerate until friction and opposition become disruptive, the chances of world peace within us.

Next was our own Matamata Dramatic society’s “Radio Show”, an excellent home grown comedy production of an imaginary 60’s local radio broadcast, with lots of local references.

This show, along with the successful production of the musical “Dusty” by our Musical Theatre group, shows the amazing number of very talented people we have right here in Matamata.

It’s a shame so few of them venture further afield to show the rest of the Waikato and Bay of Plenty just what talent Matamata has. Sadly both of these productions have now finished.

Third production is “Dirty Dusting” at Tauranga repertory’s 16th Avenue Theatre. This very risque comedy is about a group of three older, soon to be redundant, office cleaners who decide to set up a telephone sex line. The play was previously produced by our own Matamata Dramatic Society about five years ago. Other productions to enjoy in the next couple of weeks are “Blithe Spirit” at Detour Theatre Tauranga, “Peter Pan” at Te Aroha, and the musical “Dreamgirls” opening at Rotorua Musical Theatre. Over in Morrinsville the play “Where There’s a Will There’s a Murder” also opens in July, while Hamilton Playbox opens their production of “Peter Pan” at Riverlea Theatre. Lots to see again next month.

i, since we last spoke the weather has been a very mixed bag – it is winter I suppose to be fair. The local streams are a bit discoloured but still fishable. Now, the other day a had a young guy come into the shop who had taken my advice and fished a couple of the small streams that run out off the Kaimais and into the Waihou. He caught three beautiful trout around the two to three pound mark.

In the Rotorua area a lot of people are having a last fling on the trophy lakes.

Yes they close at the end of June to boat fishing, but the good news is that they are still open around the shores to fly fishing and there has been some very nice fish caught.

Last week two I know of were over nine pound. Glen Skinner, local trout guide down there, tells me the streams that run into Lake Rotorua are fishing very well, in

To the Taupo region. My man down there tells me rivers are holding some very nice fish. The spawning rainbows have been moving in, in quite good numbers. When they are in the spawning mode they are not easy to catch. Be prepared to try different methods in the one pool because they will not always be feeding. Out on the lake there is some reasonable numbers of fish being caught deep trolling and jigging.

To the se. Out west Dwayde Pinny, charter skipper, tells me he is having some very happy crews out at the moment. This is a direct result of the snapper they are catching.

Dwayde has been fishing the worm beds in 55m off Albatross Point. Dwayde tells me they are also getting a good catch of big gurnard and kahawai as well.

To the Coromandel. This area is like the

gift that never stops giving. There is no doubt that if you were a gambling person, catching snapper up in the mussel farms would be a very safe bet I think. This week there is a full moon on Thursday so that means bigger tides. This is a good chance to fish the forms in close, like the ones in Mania Harbour. Darryll, charter skipper, tells me he has caught several snapper in the past week well into double figures.

Over the ranges to the Mercury Bay area there has been some good fishing too. The big tides this week will be beneficial to an evening strayline along the edges of the foul ground – in particular, along the southern end of Great Mercury.

Over the Kaimais to the Bay of Plenty it’s once again, a bit of a mixed bag. Some anglers I have spoken to have found it hard going over there – getting a feed but it’s

not easy. On a positive note there has been some nice snapper caught in the shallows off the knoll at Motiti Island. There is a large reef that runs from the knoll in towards Town Point. Straylining over this reef at the change of light can produce some nice snapper. Get plenty of burley going is the ticket.

Down in the eastern Bay of Plenty there is plenty of excitement. The blue fin tuna have arrived and over the weekend there were more than a dozen caught. This is a reasonable small window of opportunity as they come in fairly close to the coast on their migration north. A big congratulations to one of our local fishing club members, Arrum Ali, who caught himself one over the weekend.
