A

s a family we felt the need to put pen to paper and say a great big thank you. It has now been nearly three months since our wee man, seven year old Latham Begovich, was diagnosed with cancer. What a shock – the very word cancer runs a chill down your spine. It would be fair to say we were all in a state of shock as Hayden and Alesha headed off to Starship Children’s Hospital – Latham tucked under their very caring wing, and their whole life about to change for the gruelling weeks ahead of chemotherapy. This is where you, our community stepped in. The overwhelming support has been unbelievably humbling from the Give-a-Little page to people just walking into our shop and asking “how can we help your wee grandson?”

Last Saturday night the UMS Rugby Club who Latham plays for, hosted a Casino and Auction night. To single out anyone in particular would be unfair as so many stepped up to the plate to help make an extraordinary night. Local businesses, local people, Chief’s players, cricket players etc just gave their all. I know the word ‘love’ can be thrown around a bit loosely at times but on Saturday night it was like the whole town just wanted to put their arms out, embrace Latham, and help him through this challenging time for him and his family. That was so powerful and couldn’t be underestimated as far as how much it helps everybody going forward.

I must say this is something very special about country towns like Matamata – people know people and really do care about each other. So once again, from our family to you all, thank you from the bottom of our hearts. Latham is a wee trooper and I’m sure we will all get him through this. As a family and a community we can look forward to him growing up amongst us.

Also studying towards a Bachelor of Management Studies at the University of Waikato, majoring in accounting and minoring in Japanese and Human Resources, Rebecca Brosnan recently won the regional Checker of the Year competition representing New World Matamata.

F

or the second year running New World Matamata was the top scoring team at the recent Waikato Regional Checker of the Year Competition. This year however, team member Rebecca Brosnan had extra reason to celebrate after taking out the top spot!

Having been employed with the locally owned and operated Matamata store for the past four and a half years, Rebecca says when she was announced the winner, she was so surprised she couldn’t close her mouth! “I couldn’t believe it, I was

shocked” she laughs! “There were 78 checkout operators competing from New World and Pak ‘n’ Save stores and although we all do our best and have a lot of fun, it’s crazy to think we were also the top scoring team throughout the entire Waikato region!”

With a team of seven, competing checkers are judged on presentation, customer service sills and time – or scan rates. Given she placed fourth overall at the 2017 competition, Rebecca was once again nominated for this year’s event by the

Matamata crew and with her success, will now go on to compete with nine other regional winners at the national final which will be held in Auckland in November.

“The whole night was so much fun” says Rebecca, people get up and dance and it’s neat to have that friendly rivalry with others from throughout the region. Everyone was so happy for me and, because ours was also the top scoring team, there was a lot of celebrating!”

2018 Gwynne Shield victory!

hen you consider it’s been 33 years since Matamata took ownership of the infamous Gwynne Shield - with several of the players (including the two coaches) from the early and mid-80s now on the side lines supporting their own sons, you can understand why there was just a little bit more ‘mongrel’ stirring among the 2018 squad!

Held at Cambridge during the first week of the holidays, 23 local boys literally put their heart on the field during every match.

The team continued to gain momentum as the week progressed, delivering some fantastic rugby after the hard yards of training and two close losses early in the tournament.

By the time they had made last Sunday’s final, dads were pinching themselves to

make sure it was real, mums were shedding tears of pride, coaches Adrein Wharawhara and Tony Brown were beaming, and the manager – well, she was almost sick! “We were all so incredibly proud they had got this far” says Justine Crabb “and honestly, win or lose – every one of them deserved to be there. The ‘all for one, one for all’ attitude was evident moments after the squad had been announced and then, from the get go, the team were very aware success would not be handed on a plate. They wanted it and they wanted it bad!”

“The Wasps were the only team in the tournament who had straight wins all week” says Tony. “In the final however, our boys had an outstanding first half, scoring three dominant tries. The Wasps

come back and scored right on half time and then again early in the second half. We knew we would need huge heart, mana and belief to win this final. We scored in the final minutes to regain the lead and then had to withstand huge pressure with the game ending with Wasps being held up on the line.”

The emotion both on and off the field after that try was incredible – Matamata had been blown away by the number of gumboot clad locals who travelled to support them in such terrible weather, but to have won the tournament – even by such a tight 20-17 margin, was overwhelming. In 97 years since the shield was donated by RJ Gwynne for play between Waikato schools, this is just the 11th time Matamata has brought it home.

Following an enthusiastic “wetting of the head” with shaken grape juice flowing back in the changing rooms, the boys were given a heroes chant as they took possession of a well -deserved prize – the 2018 Gwynne Shield! “To be there and witness the significance of triumphantly holding the Shield up has been mind-blowing” agree Tony and Adrein.

Of note, congratulations also went to Marokopa Herewini who was named the overall Gwynne Shield Tournament Most Valuable Player. He, along with Ben Story, Billy Crabb, Xavier Bell, Hohepa Wilson, Otis Burt and Haku Marsh, was also selected to trial for the 2018 Waikato Roller Mills Squad – the first of which was held on Sunday. Special mention also goes to Zayden Bradley who, as a year 6 student, is the youngest member of the 2018 squad. With Gwynne Shield players generally selected at year 7 and 8 level, Zayden clearly has a great future ahead of him!

A community collaboration our Matamata Guide Rangers have twofold motivation to complete a community project set to benefit many local families. Their idea was initially to come up with something that would fit with achieving the Queen’s Guide award – the highest award in Girl Guiding but, as it happens, the resulting reward has been so much more!

“We basically stumbled across an idea and went from there” says Megan Cody. “Our project is a little library where community members bring along a book and exchange it for another. It works on the ‘Take a book, return a book’ philosophy and we hope, offers the perfect solution of providing free and easy access to books for everyone.”

After discussion with Matamata Club, management has generously allowed the girls to erect the little library on their land next to the Guide Hall. “The location will offer good parking and easy access” says Madelynn Gill, “and it’s a safe area if children want to have a look too.

We really appreciate their offer.”

With the little library exchange project building internationally and it seems, becoming really popular, team member Jade Thomas says they have been told there are around 70,000 little exchange libraries around the world. “It’s such a great idea and if people use it correctly, is such a neat way to have access to a good variety of reading material.”

During the first week of the school holidays, Megan, Madelynn, Jade and Wiki Horne were thrilled to have members of Matamata Menz Shed not only teach them some great skills, but assist in building the little library. “It’s so nice of them to help us” says Wiki. “It’s turned out a bit bigger than we initially thought, but looks so cool. We’ve still got heaps to do but once the building and painting is completed over the next few weeks, we hope it inspires community families to read more and make good use of it.”

Time to train the pinky finger

lthough this time of year is inclined to make us all wish we were bears feasting through the autumn and sleeping through the winter, spring will soon be here and with that, one of Dalton’s Daisies favourite annual events!

Shaving for a mate

A

fter hearing the daughter of family friends had been diagnosed with leukemia at just 15 years old, Matamata teenager Adam Thompson, just one year older, wanted to help. “Our families have been friends for years” says Adam, “so I decided I’d like to raise some money for them and show my support. They’re also a farming family so whether the funds would be used to get a relief milker during her treatment, or provide something a bit extra for her and her siblings – it didn’t matter, I just felt compelled to do something.”

Although Adam and his family live locally, he attends Bethleham College and after some of his friends suggested shaving a mullet, they were also really happy to support his fundraising. “Another mate who owns a Honda shop in Rotorua offered to donate $100 if I’d have the Honda logo shaved onto the side of my head” laughed Adam, “so I wasn’t about to turn him down!”

Adam decided he could still take the shave a step further with the hope of raising more money. “Everyone was just so generous” he says, “and I was quite shocked at how quickly the funds were building so I decided to shave the whole lot off. So far we’ve raised over $2,500 and although now having no hair feels a bit funny, I’m glad I’ve done it!”

“Adam had quite a mop of hair” laughs his mum Vicki, “but we’re all really proud of him for stepping up to help. Cancer really is a terrible disease and, as a family, we all want to help however we can. They are so humbled by the donation and extremely grateful. Obviously we would also like to offer our thanks and appreciation to everyone who supported Adam on their behalf.”

By Murray Lambert (minister St Andrew’s Presbyterian) Have you ever wondered, or even prayed, “God if you are real, please show me”?

As a lad growing up in England, Shane Taylor got in with the wrong crowd. Things went from bad to worse with his life spiralling out of control, and he ended up in prison for two attempted murders.

He was kept under maximum security after stabbing a prison guard, but even then, his life continued to slip from bad to worse. Shane went from prison to prison until finally coming to Long Lartin in Worcestershire.

Prison authorities sent Shane to an ALPHA Course

with ALPHA courses.

Initially he just argued with the course leaders, but after being encouraged to pray himself, said, “God if you’re real, come into my life because I hate who I am.” Shane had this “energy feeling in his stomach and it started to raise up and raise up” until he broke out in uncontrollable tears. He knew God was real. Shane’s life was finally turned around and he’s since been released. It was moving to hear him express his gratitude to God for the changes that have come in his life since. He goes back into prisons now to help others find God

Musical opportunity not to be missed

H

aving promised the community a spectacular show featuring some of the most infamous musicals of all time, Matamata College music teacher Laura Atkins is confident she can deliver!

Nylon, a performance by over a dozen year 10 to 13 Matamata College students, is a cabaret style show that includes Broadway musicals ranging from Phantom of the Opera through to Mary Poppins, Grease and Mamma Mia - and, while representations of some of them could be considered a little liberal, all are incredibly polished and very well choreographed.

“The cabaret showcases some of the incredibly talented performers we currently have at the school” says Laura, “and has provided a unique opportunity for them to share their passion for the arts. A few in fact, have taken leadership roles helping students unleash talents they never knew they had – particularly with dance and movement.”

Although vocal performance and delivery has been a focus since mid-way through term one, recent practice sessions have included choreography, dance and stage presence which, says Laura, has really brought Nylon to life. “The past week has been particularly rewarding as far as students giving up their time to come in over the school holidays. We’re only a couple of weeks out from opening night now and, although practices have con-

For the students, being part of a major stage show performed to their friends, families and community started out a little daunting laughs Chloe Lowe, but with each week, our confidence has grown immensely she says. “We’re all pretty much at the stage where we can’t wait for opening night now! We’ve all learned so much and can honestly say all the hard work has been totally worth it.

Miss Atkins is so patient and has taught us all so much that we want to be amazing for her as much as ourselves!”

From a performance perspective, students also acknowledge Nylon has offered a taste of future aspirations in the ‘grown-up’ world. Helen Drysdale Dunn for example, dreams of treading the musical boards professionally and says some of the numbers included in this cabaret are what have inspired her love of musical theatre and stage productions. “Who knows what opportunities will be presented as we get older” she says. “Life is about taking those you are offered at the time and doing the best you can with them. I’m proud of what we are creating and have no doubt audiences will thoroughly enjoy the Nylon experience.”

Extra special help for local residents

en years ago five ordinary people moved into their beautiful new home in Kaimai Drive and although this might not seem all that extraordinary, for them, it was better than Christmas!

In conjunction with IHC property coordinators, Waikato South IDEA Services began the process of planning a new Matamata home that would suit the changing and future needs of people using the services. They consulted with those that would be residing there and their families, and before long an architect was collating this information to design a suitable dwelling.

In September 2007 Peter Vossen Builders began constructing the new home which, as well as single rooms for the residents, included a bedroom for an overnight support worker. The five residents-to-be were fully involved in the build from start to finish, with personal spaces individual and unique to each of them. They are free to come and go as they please, but with the security and peace of mind that assistance is available if they need it.

“Using the ‘do it with me, not for me’ philosophy, and wherever possible encouraging independence, Kaimai Drive encompasses everything we as an organisation could possibly want for our residents” says support worker, Teri Grindley.

“It is their home, and their rules and we respect that” she says.

Recently, Trevor Potter, publicity officer for Hinuera/Te Poi Lions contacted the residents asking if there were any specific things they might require help with. “They were really thrilled to hear from him” says Teri, “especially as they have recently been having trouble with their television.

Trevor told them he would take the request back to his fellow Lions and see what

could be done to help source a replacement.”

“Initially we approached Tony Schuts at Tonezone who had a reasonable second hand TV available” says Trevor, “so our president, John Hoebergen agreed to pop in and pick it up. When he got there and explained what we were doing however, Tony decided to take it a step further and offered us a brand new Panasonic 40”television for the residents at no extra cost. Of course we were absolutely delighted and couldn’t wait to have it delivered!”

“Our girls were absolutely over the moon” says Teri, “and really appreciated the assistance of Hinuera/Te Poi Lions and of course, Tony’s generosity. With Chrome cast capability, the new TV certainly offers much more fun especially through the winter months when it’s harder to get outside” she says! Caron Stewart.

Going wacky for Westpac

or many students of Te Poi School, living in remote rural areas can mean significant delays should an emergency situation arise – especially if that situation could result in a life or death scenario. “Sadly we are all too aware of incidents that can happen so quickly and unexpectedly, that lives could be at risk” says Principal, Linda Larsen. “It is absolutely imperative that services such as the Westpac Air Ambulance are available which simply can’t happen without ongoing support. As a school community we are pleased to have an annual fundraising “Wacky hair day for Westpac’ and our families continue to support it with enthusiasm!” Held on Friday, the last day of the school term, students arrived at school full of wackiness! Later, thanks to the generous assistance of Miranda and the Matamata Branch of Westpac, students also enjoyed a fundraising sausage sizzle.

The annual Sir Peter Blake Leadership Awards have been taking place since 2005 and recognise outstanding New Zealand leaders who follow in the footsteps of Sir Peter and continue to exemplify his extraordinary kiwi ‘can do’ spirit. Sir Peter Blake is widely recognised as one of New Zealand’s greatest leaders - not only because of what he achieved as a yachtsman and environmentalist, but more importantly, from the way he went about doing things. “Sir Peter Blake believed in the incredible potential of young kiwis to achieve great things” said Miranda. He knew that inspiring leaders of any age could be found in every corner of New Zealand, and showed all of us there are leaders and there are dreamers. It’s an opportunity to make new friends, learn new skills and have a whole lot of fun in a safe and fully supervised environment. Hannah Wood, a Matamata College student who has attended the programme since she was just six years old, is now one of the volunteers and thoroughly enjoys the opportunity to ‘give

back’ now she’s a teenager. “I always really looked forward to coming” laughs Hannah, “and had so much fun. Every school holidays the activities were different and honestly, I made some really neat things over the years! Now, being available to come back and help support the kids with their activities and learning is really cool.”

With the theme ‘Favourites’, the recent holiday programme included a variety of challenges and games that, as it suggests, earned a wee sweet treat! “As well as

College sports round-up

number of events were locally hosted last term including Thames Valley Squash at the United Matamata Squash Club, Thames Valley Netball at the Netball Centre, and a Clay Target Shoot at the Matamata Gun Club. At these events we were very lucky to have volunteers from the local clubs to support our players, parents and coaches to deliver successful experiences for other competitors.

At the squash there was an individual competition for A to D graders and a team’s competition. Logan Webber and Braedyn Henderson placed second and third in the boys’ competition and Jack Reynolds was the plate winner. Stacey Willison and Aimee Burnell also placed second and third in the girls’ competition.

Andre Burnell, Daniel Willison and Brodie Cleaver were second in the boys’ team competition. New World College A finished third in their section and beat Waihi College to finish fifth overall. Thames High School were the winners and will host the tournament next year. The Matamata College shoot attracted a good number of other schools and teams. Our top shooter

for the day was Jackson Diprose.

At the Waikato Secondary Schools Squash teams’ competition our boys Logan, Braedyn and Josh Adamson placed second from 26 teams. Brodie, Daniel and Jack won the consolation plate (seventh place).

The Lacrosse Girls have had an awesome start to their third season in the Waikato Lacrosse competition. To date they haven’t dropped a game and have had some high scoring wins. A number of the girls have been selected for the Waikato U15 teams, Mia Roberts, Mary Crabb, Paige Weatherley, Madelyn Gill and Maddie Edwards.

Other representative honours to Lauren Hawkings and Sophie Tarry who have made Waikato U18 Hockey, and to Jess Allen and Alana Sankey for selection to Thames Valley U18 Hockey.

For the first time in many years we sent a team to Thames Valley Badminton, team captain Jess Lowe did a fantastic job of organising the team and organising her mum to drive them to Te Aroha. The team had mixed results and thoroughly enjoyed their day. Well done Jess, Jaedyn, Cassidy, Reiko Sato and Edward Roskam.

Theatrical Thinking

recently had the pleasure of seeing a couple of school and youth productions. The school production was mainly performed by year 12 teenagers, and they did a very good job while clearly enjoying themselves. One or two actors did stand out with almost professional standard performances, and showed the ability to make a career in performing arts if they wish. The youth production included some much younger children maybe only seven or eight years of age.

They came on as a group in a crowd scene, looking a little confused but appropriately costumed.

They did a song with a few simple dance moves then were ushered offstage by an older cast member. While the amateurish childishness of their performance may not have thrilled hardened theatregoers I’m sure they brought joy to the hearts of their parents and family in the audience. This is where theatre starts, youngsters getting their first experience onstage. Some may

hate it and never do it again, while others may love it and continue with theatre as a hobby and interest for the rest of their life. A few may even make a career of it. Theatre is much like sport, a team activity where you all have to work together to achieve a good result, but where there is opportunity for the very talented to shine.

Watching these two productions made me think that all children should be encouraged to try both theatre and sport as part of their growing up. A few productions to see in the next few weeks, “The Vicar of Dibley” opens at Rotorua Little Theatre’s Shambles Theatre for a two week season. The musical “Heathers” opens at Tauranga Musical Theatre’s Westside Theatre for a two week season. At Te Awamutu’s Woolshed Theatre the musical “Once Upon a Mattress”, based on the fairy story of the Princess and the Pea, with music written by Mary Rogers the daughter of composer Richard Rogers.

As that final whistle blew my heart swelled with pride and I let out a WAHOO, clapping loudly as the Matamata Gwynne Shield boys of 2018 ran around the field hugging each other with elation.

A 33 year old drought had been broken and little old Matamata where the winners of the inaugural and legendary competition. As I looked around, I was surprised to see an overwhelming amount of supporters who, like myself, did not have a child or direct connection to the team, but made it out on the cold, wet and blustery day to support OUR team, OUR community.

So what an opportunity this has created for our community to think about the future of rugby in this town. Surely this is a prime example of the talent our town has amongst it and what we can achieve on a Waikato wide platform when we are one - Matamata.

Another example is our current U21 team, sitting top of the table in the Waikato competition, looking ahead to a Waikato wide final. Although this team is under a club umbrella they are a mixed team of young men from various backgrounds wanting to play rugby together with their mates, for their town - Matamata.

Isn’t this where everyone started out?? The life members and stalwarts of our past and current district clubs will have some amazing stories and memories from years gone by and these will always be honoured and respected. But it is time now for the young men of our town to start making their own memories. It shouldn’t matter what club you support or where you are from, it’s about our national game – rugby, and potentially being the best we can be for our town Matamata.

Imagine the potential of one rugby club in our town. The recent events of our Gwynne Shield boys should inspire every one of us to make this happen. It doesn’t matter what our fathers, uncles, cousins and grandfathers did. This is about the here and now, and the future. These boys will go on to spend the next six years of college playing together, they should be able to envisage a united team to aspire to in the future. Town or country we are Matamata district and we are a force to be reckoned with on the rugby field when we are one - Matamata.

The town would reap many more benefits with this outcome. There would be less financial demand on local sponsors, eventuating in more sponsors for one club. The pool of volunteers would double, and we all know the strain on volunteers is real and will only become more so in future years. It would mean stronger teams at competition level, therefore attracting coaches and management more easily. Waikato selectors at all levels would be forced out of Hamilton to come and take a look at the talent in our town, if we pool our talent, they are less likely to be picked off or attracted to more renowned clubs to enable their pathways to higher levels. In accommodating more competitive teams, it also allows us to have a greater group of likeminded people who may just want to play socially.

It is time for the people of this town to put their own egos aside and consider the future of our local youth and the game that we all love in the town that we call ours - Matamata.

inter bites and so do the fish. That is an important theme to remember at this time. Stream levels are high and frown lines deep as calving gets into full swing. Fishing is a great release if you can get a day off the farm, or whatever your trade is.

You will notice that most of the rivers and streams around the district are carrying a lot of water and colour. Now this can be a good thing as the extra colour helps with deception making those wile old trout a bit easier to fool.

In the Rotorua area Glen Skinner tells me he is having a lot of success on Lake Rotorua.

Glen is most impressed with the results from harling off the Airport area and down along the edge of the weed bank towards the Ohau Channel. Glen also comments that the stream mouth fishing on Lake Rotorua is very good.

Down to the Taupo region and its good news on the rivers. Ken Duncan, my guide in the area, tells me there are quite good numbers of fresh run fish in the Tauranga Taupo and the Waituanui. Ken also comments that the river mouth fishing has been quite good.

Out on the lake the down rigging and deep trolling has been reasonable effective.

To the sea. The west coast has been good when Mother Nature allows you to cross the bars. Being a west coast charter fisherman, like Dwayde Pinny, can be a challenging job at this time of the year. Not because you can’t catch fish, it’s because you can’t get out there often enough. On the good news side of things, when you can cross the bar and get out, there is good snapper fishing to be had. Dwayde says to head out to about 60m. If nothing’s

doing there, try about 55m he says.

Up to the Coromandel area. Still Mr Consistency for a reliable place to catch a feed of snapper. Like all other areas its winter fishing and you need to approach things a bit differently. With the cold water temperatures, the fish go into a bit of a slow mode so this requires a bit more patience. Set up in your spot and sit it out – they may take a while but you are better to do that than finance the fuel companies by charging all over the place. If the sea conditions allow head out into the deeper water and look for a kahawai workup.

This is another good option as the snapper will often feed under them and you can target them with the various metal slow jigs available.

Over the ranges to the Mercury Bay area it’s a similar story of course. The snapper fishing

has been more productive in the deeper water during the day. Then, as the day comes to a close, head to the edges of the foul and more shallow conditions. Once again arm yourself with plenty of burley and be patient. For those wanting to target the blue fin tuna, they have headed north from Waihou Bay and it would be worth a look out wide from the tip of Red Merc.

Over the Kaimais to the Bay of Plenty. I have had a few reports of quite good snapper fishing over the sand in close. Productive areas are off Matakana, and down off Papamoa.

Local well-known fisho Matty Dalton has been catching some nice snapper over the patches of foul on the western side of Motiti. Shoot out for a load of garden mix for your spring vegies and he might tell you where!
