ell hello and welcome to 2018! It’s a little hard to believe the holiday period is over and already, local families are getting back into the swing of work, routine and dare I say it… preparing for the new school year!

For me it was the loveliest Christmas ever at my brother’s in Ngaruawahia with family just relaxing and catching up after a busy year. Of course my little nephew Millar at just five months old, made it extra special – even though he really had no idea what was going on! As you can imagine though, being the first baby in the family for quite a few years, he was absolutely spoiled and fussed over!

This past weekend I was lucky enough to attend a really special occasion with my best friend in the entire world celebrating her 50th birthday. It got me thinking, this whole half century thing – and just how fortunate I am actually. Life sure has a funny way of keeping things real… adding the wrinkles, the creaks and groans and all that of course, but it also provides the odd moment where you couldn’t be more thankful for every single tell-tale sign of “maturity”.

Gailene (my bestie) and I became friends in our late teens and boy, we smashed life back then! Everything was about a good time - not a long time, and as long as we were having fun, nothing else really seemed to matter. Of course gradually, and without even realising it… we grew up! Relationships, children, mortgages and real responsibility happened. Circumstances changed... and changed again… and although it was a different kind of life and friendship, she was the one that was always there through all the times – the happy, sad, bad and the glad! So, when I had my little nostalgic moment on the morning of her birthday, I realised just how incredibly short the last 30 odd years

have been and how lucky I am to have had her alongside me throughout. Maybe it’s another thing that happens as we age but I hope, like me, that if you have a bestie or the like in your life, that you appreciate them. Life really is short and while we still have a reasonable full bag of marbles up there in the swede, it’s good to be able to acknowledge that and more importantly, appreciate it.

Righty, so workwise…. Well goodness! It was a bit hard getting back into the groove of it this week I do have to admit! I was pretty excited to be back visiting all kinds of people doing all kinds of things but when it came to parking up and hitting the keyboard, every distraction possible seemed to hinder progress! Beautiful weather, pretty gardens… a good yarn with someone about their holiday… it just didn’t stop! Thankfully now however, with the first week sorted, I think my brain may just have caught up and joined me in the building!

This issue, obviously the first for the year, is always a bit relaxed – especially with many local families still away and enjoying the last week before the routine of school, work and life kicks back. It’s nice though to be able to feature some of the amazing memories made during the holiday break and share the fun they had while away – Lilly Lowe sets the scene on page 1 but check out pages 16 and 17 for more.

From here of course, I remain completely committed to producing an entirely local focussed publication and basically if you think its news, I’d love to hear about it. Scene is distributed throughout Matamata, Tirau and all surrounding rural areas so if it happens within that boundary, give me a yodel. I don’t accept advertising from outside our distribution area so when dealing with Scene, you can be assured the entire paper is as local as you

are. Wherever possible I encourage our community to get involved, shop locally, support our personally owned and operated businesses and ensure the town remains positive, vibrant and proactive. It’s so important to remember that even when you think you might be saving a dollar by purchasing online or in the city, that these are not the companies that are supporting your children, school and sporting events, and of course, the myriad of amazing services we have within our community. If we don’t support them – how do you imagine they can continue to support us?

aving joined the Nicholson’s team in 2017 Hamish Evans was very pleased to have the opportunity to head out to Waharoa Airfield this week to take a look at one of the initiatives the company has sponsored for more years than they can remember.

“When I learned of our involvement in the Walsh Memorial Scout Flying School I was really keen to get out there are see what it was all about” says Hamish. “I have a few friends involved in aviation and although I might be a year or two too old to enrol in the flying school, I have developed an interest and had no idea that such a large operation was right on our doorstep.”

Meeting with Walsh Director John Hamilton, Hamish was delighted to see first-hand just how valuable Nicholson’s assistance is during the two week experience. “To learn that around 70 students – over half of which have absolutely no experience, can learn, practice and potentially fly solo in such a short time is inspiring” he said. “From as young as 16 years old, they are involved in all aspects of aviation in the classroom, on the ground and in the air. 16 planes are on the line with around 25 instructors volunteering their time and expertise and of course, many other volunteers are there taking care of everything from catering to domestics and forecasting to air traffic control. Nicholson’s have, for many years, provided a vehicle for use at the annual school and boy, it’s very well utilised! The ability to tow fuel straight to the aircraft saves a lot of wasted time and alleviates the need for line ups to the pump! This means students can then more efficiently perform their necessary checks and inspections and get on with their lessons and learning.”

In showing Hamish around, John Hamilton also offered his grateful appreciation to New World Matamata, The Meat Co. and The Boltholder for their support and assistance, and of course, Nicholson Auto’s.

Of note, it was interesting to learn also that up to 40% of instructors also completed their first ever solo flight at the Walsh Memorial Scout Flying School! “The school is held in extremely high regard” says John, “and many of our instructors return year after year to remain involved.

They believe in the initiative and are proud of the results and achievements by their students. In many cases, taking this two week period as annual leave gives them the opportunity to give back to an organisation that frequently kick-starts goals, dreams, ambition and success – including their own.”

“Making handcrafted cards is something I have always been interested in” says Robyn. “I never seemed to be able to find just the right thing in a store and found it really rewarding to make personalised cards for people. Regardless of the occasion, it was a lovely way to individualise them and incorporate colours, themes or interests I knew my recipient would enjoy.”

After the local shop that supplied all Robyn’s necessary bits and bobs ceased trading, she began to investigate ways of getting her craft material for a reasonable price yet without compromising quality. “I did such a lot of research” she says, “and soon realised the sensible thing would be to source and supply things for myself. It opened up the perfect opportunity for a small home based business that meant I could stay at home yet keep busy while the kids were at school and continue with my hobby at the same time.

I began selling my cards on Trade-Me and at the local markets but also to various people who wanted something a little different, or for instance, a special one-off or custom card.”

Although she is predominately self-taught through what she describes as a lot of trial and error, Robyn has over the years learned a lot from You Tube craft videos and of course, storing away ideas she comes across! “I remember starting out making simple Christmas cards from plain folded card with felt embellishments” she laughs! “Thankfully I’ve learned a lot and come a long way since those days, and now enjoy using a huge variety of techniques, folding styles and beautiful materials. We all have to start somewhere though and where I can, I am always happy to share what I’ve learned with others new to the craft or help if I can.”

Although her paper craft supplies business is based online, Robyn does still welcome personal shoppers and also has a selection of her own all occasion cards available for purchase. “I’ve revamped the website and strived to source new and exciting products that offer something different” she says. “Anyone interested is welcome to check out my website or contact me for a more one on one appointment. There are always lovely new products and materials I come across so keep in touch!”

Admitting to being “a little slack of late” Robyn does intend to boost up her stocks and revisit the monthly Matamata Markets at the Primary School in the very near future. Restoring Rapurapu fter realising one of our districts most beautiful reserves seemed to have slipped under the radar and into somewhat a state of disrepair, a few locals decided it was time to step up and make a difference.

“Rapurapu Reserve is one of those places many of us have memories of as children” says local resident, Nick Evans. “I can remember my parents taking us there when we were kids and we’d have a great time.

It’s still a beautiful, natural and largely untouched piece of paradise on the outskirts of town and there is no reason why families can’t continue to enjoy its beauty - but it needs to be looked after.”

Nick’s dad, the late Algie Evans, had approached Council about restoring the reserve and ensuring its maintenance after the toilets were removed in 2009 due to continued vandalism. Late last year Nick

along with a few other locals, decided to follow through with what Algie had started and formed the Rapurapu Reserve Committee to share and discuss ideas - and perhaps, implement plans that would ensure its continued enjoyment. “As it happened, after consultation with Council, we learned there was a proposal in place; although funding wouldn’t be available until July this year” says Nick. “We were happy to hear that – especially to learn that it was on the list and considered important.”

After their meeting with Council, the Reserve Committee decided to get cracking and begin implementing at least some of the initiatives that didn’t require significant funding. “One of the biggest issues was rubbish dumping and closely following that, was evidence of 4WD vehicles driving into or up the river” says Nick. We cleaned that up and were extremely fortu-

sale nate that Brett Hodge and the team at Matamata Post & Rails donated timber bollards we could then install to stop this behaviour. Almost 150 were placed which blocked off access to the area where roading would later be removed. Sadly it didn’t take long before a couple of them were attacked and removed for access. Peter Thissen from The Boltholder then donated chain which unfortunately, was also cut and stolen. We’re not about to give up however and as a result of one or two mindless vandals, Scotty and the team at Garland Engineering are assisting us with steel bollards that can’t be removed. A keyed bar will allow council mower access but will also ensure the area remains safe.”

Although there is still a few months before the existing road can be removed, the Reserve Committee are very grateful to J Swap Contractors who will use a digger to redevelop part of the reserve area, and Council who will provide a new carpark area once funds are released. A public working bee day or weekend has been mooted by the committee where anyone interested would be welcome to roll up their sleeves and help with weed spraying and other light maintenance duties. here most children wish for the latest “must have” toy or game growing up, Tim Hampton only ever wanted one thing – and as many of it as he could get his hands on. Whether it was his birthday, Christmas or any special occasion, he dreamed about cords and couldn’t wait to connect them up around the house from the skirting boards to the ceiling. They didn’t serve any particular purpose but, as his mum Gill will tell you, he was born with an enquiring mind and technological dreams.

As Tim grew, so too did his interest in computers. For as long as he can remember, he’s had a fascination for fixing them and ensuring everything was running at optimal performance. If it wasn’t, he would spend literally hours investigating how software could be improved or what could be developed to enhance the result of digital performance for the end user.

Having completed a Bachelor of Science majoring in Computer Science after leaving the College, Tim returned to Matamata and opened his business, Mata Digital, which specialises in designing and building websites. “Our team provide up to the minute solutions that have the ability to change and grow as required” says Tim, “and, along with initial design, we manage and maintain an online presence to ensure your finger is on the pulse - giving you the ability to maximise profit and growth.

Where this is predominately used in business, it has also been an invaluable tool in helping streamline the upcoming Matamata College Centenary celebrations. I created a website that offers simple registration, ticketing and collation and have thoroughly enjoyed being part of a

team that is bringing such an important event to life.”

A student at Matamata College between 2009 and 2013, Tim is looking forward to centenary celebrations and urges anyone that is yet to register, to get on it! “There are some really great events planned” he says, “and regardless of which of those you choose to attend, the centenary is going to be a fabulous opportunity to renew friendships, catch up on each other’s lives and see just how far education has come over recent years. I’ve only been out of school for a few years and still live in the district, yet I’m getting pretty excited about it so I can only imagine how it will be for some of the older generation who have a lifetime of experiences to share. We’re not going to have the opportunity to experience this again so don’t miss it – check out the website and see me there!”

As you can imagine, by the time Tim started at Matamata College, the opportunities to become further immersed in technology escalated. He had barely learned his way around the school before he was elbows deep in everything from technical lighting and sound to computer installation. He significantly assisted with creating databases, compiling resources for the annual school magazine and of course, was constantly investigating ways to improve technological systems across the school. “I was extremely fortunate while at Matamata College to have teachers such as Estelle Claasen, Ian Marshall and Alison Chester encourage me” says Tim. “I’ve always believed that you have the ability to make your education exactly what you want it to be and honestly, my five years at the school set me up extremely well for my future. The fact that now, after graduating university and starting my own business,

Time to go against the flow!

By Nathan Gann, Matamata Baptist Church Martin Luther King Jr day was January 15th. MLK was really unpopular in the States when he was alive. We still have some courageous counter-cultural voices alive who speak to the unhealthy parts of our culture. For example; Russell Brand, Black Mirror, Bono, Maya Angelou, Chomsky, and Wendell Berry.

Maybe you would have a different list.

Culture is sort of the proverbial fish in the fish bowl. Culture just makes it easy to go with the flow. Culture can be good and beautiful. And yet often times its toxic. Racism. Consumerism. Greed.

Gluttony. Violence. Media addiction.

Selfishness. Poverty. But these just become part of our life. And to be a voice against these with any integrity? Whoa!

But what does it look like to have their influence be something more than an idea? How do their ideas actually mature and transform your soul, habits, and life? That seems to be the tricky part!

Ironically, I can look at years of being in ministry in the Church, and seeing how unhealthy I was. Or perhaps I should say, I still am. So it’s easy to throw the first stone at others. Focus on their specks instead of my own plank sort of

ideology. We moved here from the States six months ago. Maybe it took the cognitive distance of being immersed in another culture to see it so clearly in my own life. My body as a temple. My soul as a garden. Neither of them were doing so hot.

Jesus was the ultimate revolutionary voice. And he was the only one who spoke with total integrity. But somehow it's so easy to mould him into what is culturally comfortable. What would it look like this week to take one unhealthy thing in our life, and go against the flow?

Relay supporting lifesaving services

I

n October 2016 Jesse, an employee of Begovich Builder’s Ltd, sustained serious injuries while working onsite.

This included a spinal injury that left the young man paralysed from the waist down and subsequently, wheelchair bound.

Since the accident Jesse continues to amaze and inspire with his attitude and positive outlook. His injury has in no way slowed him down! Jesse has been actively trying his hand at any and all sports including basketball, wheelchair rugby, bodybuilding and even recently competing in a half marathon. Then, only last month, he completed the New York marathon.

As a business, Begovich Builders want to show Jesse their continued support and thought there was no better way to do this than put feet to pavement and earn some sponsorship for such a great individual. As a company and a team, Begovich Builders will be competing in the Lake Taupo Great Lake relay which will be held on February 17.

After discussing plans with Jesse, the humble young man

decided rather than benefiting from any raised funds personally, he would like to see any money raised split between the Auckland Spinal Rehabilitation unit and the Westpac Air Ambulance.

With 24 registered runners, the Begovich crew will make up three teams of eight who will each run a leg to complete the 67km distance. Shaun Begovich, co-Director with his brother Hayden, will also be attempting to complete the entire event individually.

Each of the runners will be asking friends, family and members of the community to support and sponsor them individually, but as a team, they would also appreciate your help.

Preserving the memory of Peria Hall

ince 1909, the building on the corner of Matai and Station Roads had served the Peria residents past and present, very well. However, in more recent years the use of the Peria Hills hall had declined and in 2014 the hall committee made the decision to have it decommissioned. The building was recently demolished and a portion of the hall grounds is to be kept as a reserve area.

The building began life on one and a half acres of Education Board land, set aside as part of the 1904 Matamata Settlement plan. Mati School opened there in 1909 with 15 pupils in the 18 feet by 12 feet schoolroom. Why the school name –Mati- was spelt differently to the Matai Road name is a mystery. Local residents remember the school being used for meetings and various social events and farewells to local boys about to leave for war service.

In 1946 the school name was changed to Peria Hills School and in February 1951 the school closed as there was no teacher available.

The local community held a public meeting in the schoolroom on 25 August 1955, to hear the local County Riding member explain that the school building and grounds had been vested in the County as a domain and that it was for Peria residents to develop as such. The residents were unanimous in their wish to retain the area for local use.

A few months later a committee was formed and under the guidance of local builder Stan Gardiner, the residents swung into action- with tidying the grounds, new fencing and alterations to the building. The building alterations involved the addition of a kitchen and toilet area and an extension of the length of the hall by approximately 12 feet with the timber being sourced from the Te Poi mill.

The cost of alterations was assessed at approximately £360 which was raised by canvassing the district for funds and in March 1957 the opening of the new hall extensions was held. However it was only 18 months later that there was a request by the Indoor Bowling Club to further extend the hall, this time by another 15 feet at a cost of £500. Ralph Vincent was employed as a builder and once again a team of local residents were involved in helping to complete the extension.

Voluntary custodians of the building for many years

were Harry and Ivy Lowe who lived opposite the Hall. In later years this role and that of keeping the Domain grounds in order, has been done by members of the Payze family and Henry de Haas.

The Indoor Bowling Club continued to have regular use of the hall until it went into recess in 2004. Other regular users of the hall were Country Women’s Institute 19552007 and Sunday school classes 1955- mid 1970s. The district was well served with sporting and cultural activities, with the following groups making good use of the facilities - darts club, table tennis club, dance classes, yoga, Jazzercise . The tennis club was granted use of the school courts in 1921 and in 1945 the school committee instigated the construction of new courts which were in regular use by the club until the late 1950s. Other happenings included film evenings, electioneering meetings, use as a

Polling Booth, meetings of Federated Farmers, Deer Stalkers, Matamata and Firth Pony Clubs; Harriers check point, 21st birthdays, kitchen teas and district welcome-in and farewells. Once the school had closed down, most of the local children had to travel to Matamata for their schooling and so the hall also became the venue for the bus stop for pupils in the area.

Since the meeting in 1955 at which the Peria residents took over the care of the building and land as a domain, many hours of voluntary labour have gone into the alterations and further renovations of the hall, painting and maintenance , provision of water supply, keeping the grounds mowed and tidy. Peria Hills Hall provided the district with the opportunity to add to the community spirit in creating a space to meet for social, cultural, sporting and educational events. Supplied.

77 years later and we’re nearly there! fter Matamata Piako District Council made the decision to upgrade the 77 year old Memorial Centre, it was in 2016 Stanley Group successfully tendered for the rebuild which would include new council chambers, the library and a Civic and Memorial Centre for the benefit of the Matamata community.

In submitting tender documents, much thought and planning was given to retaining historical components of the existing building including the salvage of timber flooring, joists, bearers, rafters and trusses for example, that could be retained and presented back to council for re-use.

“Working with heritage specialists and conforming to various conditions of resource consent was a time consuming and arduous process” said Stanley Construc-

Handed over to Stanley Group on March 20, 2017, disconnection of services preceded the removal of asbestos before demolition could begin. From there scrap metal and anything that could be burned was sorted, items for recycling or reuse were removed and endless trips to landfill followed! A portion of the library was retained which, given its sound structure, was successfully transitioned into the new building.

Hindered by an extremely wet winter – in fact during July, 29 days of rain in total, Jason is extremely positive as final weeks of the project approach. “We have been extremely fortunate to have had an excellent spell of good weather and have been able

to achieve a great deal of progress over the Christmas and New Year period” he says.

“Many of the tradies worked right through and huge appreciation is extended to them for their commitment and dedication. A lot of the high level components were completed, including the entry soffit and would you believe, 2,000 lineal metres of cedar was installed in just six days to ensure the landscaping crew wouldn’t experience delays. At this point too, I would like to personally acknowledge the generosity of the only residential occupant in the vicinity, Derek Cameron. With all number of machinery, trucks and equipment, concreting and various components being installed at all hours of the night and early morning, he has been extremely accommodating. This type of activity would tend to wear pretty thin after this length of time, yet he has been nothing but understanding and receptive. We all appreciate that and offer our thanks!”

Along with landscaping, painting and gardening to be completed outside, testing and commissioning inside, final internal fit-offs and quality assurance inspections are underway and expected to be completely finished mid-February. Foodbank offer appreciation ith 49 local families receiving gifts and essential food supplies just prior to Christmas, it’s no surprise that many were moved to tears as the boxes were delivered by volunteers of Matamata Foodbank.

“We are so incredibly grateful to every member of the community that donated food and essential household items, offered financial assistance or contributions, delivered gifts or helped in any way” says Raewyn, coordinator of Matamata Foodbank. “You literally changed the lives of these families that may otherwise have had a fairly dismal Christmas Day and holiday period.”

With local schools and community groups often raising awareness and collection for the local Foodbank, Raewyn says its overwhelming to see initiatives such as the Noble & Lee Chartered Accountants Trolley Run add to this generosity. “All people, of all walks of life can unexpectedly find themselves in dire situ-

ations” she says. “It’s not very often mismanagement of income, but rather, something like a redundancy or job loss, ill health – even something like unavoidable vehicle or house repairs that can completely turn a household budget on its head. Matamata Household Budgeting Service and the Foodbank are essential services in our community and we are so fortunate to have such loyal support from both New World and Countdown, local businesses and individuals and of course, the little extras that are coordinated at various times throughout the year by a range or groups. We simply could not continue to operate successfully without this assistance.”

With her small team of helpers packing the Christmas boxes in mid December last year, Raewyn said it was extremely humbling to see gifts being delivered right up until Christmas Eve. “We had families that had decided to pamper mums or dads with special toiletries or vouchers, others that

chose gifts and toys suitable for girls or boys of all ages, and even donations of goods the whole family could enjoy like cricket sets, swing ball and board games.

“It was wonderful to see that even though it’s a very busy and hectic time for many families, they took that little bit of time to think of those in less fortunate circumstances. Over and over it was very apparent that people appreciated that financial pressure can hit any of us at any time and that by helping in whatever small way we can, the result is beneficial in so many ways. This job certainly makes me appreciate what a kind and caring community we live in.”

Although supplies at Matamata Foodbank have been adequate over the holiday period, Raewyn and her team are always grateful of donations throughout the year – particularly meat and/or goods that can be frozen. If you are unsure of what is needed, supermarket vouchers of any value are a fantastic contribution – partic-

ularly when the need may arise to assist babies, elderly or those with specific dietary requirements due to allergies etc.

Bulk items (washing powder, toilet paper, cleaning products etc) are also appreciated as they often offer good value for money and can be portioned depending on need.

Matamata College in great shape ith overall NCEA exam results released recently, Matamata College Principal Alan Munro is expecting good things in 2018!

“Across the board our students have tracked pretty much at the level we expected” he says. “End of year exam results are generally a reflection of the effort and consistency displayed throughout the school year and the number of merit and excellence endorsements achieved this year further cements success in applied learning and teaching methods.”

leaving school to pursue apprenticeships, employment and paid training opportunities. “Its great to see” says Alan. “Although it’s often sad to see the students head out the gate for the last time, knowing they are going off to pursue meaningful careers or good job prospects means we have done our job in providing a successful transition to adulthood. On average around 90% of our senior students are in tertiary pathways which range from the Gateway program to carefully selected subject choices with university, Wintec or tertiary training organisation placements talked through with our careers staff.”

Proudly celebrating 50 years in business ... thanks for your loyal support 50 years and counting fter his father helped get his foot in the door, a young Ted Handley was pretty pleased to get a job even if it was just sweeping floors. He was one of those 15 year olds that basically went to school to eat his lunch and was pretty keen on signing out as soon as he was able!

A

Once he turned 16, Ted was offered an apprenticeship and having developed a keen interest in auto trimming and upholstery, he jumped at it – signing his life away for five years – or in those days, 10,000 hours. He soon became proficient

in car and furniture upholstery, boat covers, awnings – basically anything that could be crafted from fabrics and canvas.

It was in August 1967 his employer, Alan Beaver, moved to Gisborne which initially gave Ted the opportunity to buy the business and later, also the Hetana Street building.

“They were extremely busy days” remembers Ted. “Our work was predominately auto related and included a lot of things today’s generation would find rather unique – vinyl roofs, body moulds

Although times were changing, Ted was fortunate to have an enquiring mind which he says, naturally brought about change and innovation. “Taking chances and going the extra mile for a customer often created new opportunity” he says. “The Anlift cow lifter for example, was an innovative solution we invented which won international awards and over the years, has remained a lucrative product we export to England.”

Another significant opportunity arose when, after manufacturing a commercial awning for KFC, Matamata Motor Trimmers were then contracted to supply all KFC stores with awnings from the Bay of Islands to Invercargill! Pizza Hut soon followed suit and with each requiring the inclusion of logos, Ted and his wife Linda decided there was merit in introducing signwriting capabilities to their business.

In 1982 Ted won an innovations award at the Mystery Creek Fieldays for the Anlift Cattle Lifter he invented after a farmer friend asked for his help in finding a better way to care for “downer cows”. The award-winning Anlift Cattle Lifter designed by Ted fully supports a cow until she is able to stand unaided.

After fire ravaged their business in 1975, an emergency move the very next day to temporary premises in the building where Farmer’s is now, meant it was business as usual! As you can see, the event created quite a lot of interest judging by the spectators on the right.

Don’t miss Concert by the Lake headliners! wo Many Chiefs’ vocalist Lou’ana Whitney wowed audiences in Matamata last year with her amazing voice and she can’t wait to get back on the pontoon for an encore performance at Rotary Matamata’s Concert by the Lake on March 4.

The Auckland-based singer and her band will join headliner Bic Runga and Kiwi songstress Jamie McDell in the fourth annual addition of the concert, a fundraising event run by the local Rotary club.

“We loved the experience last year – it was so beautiful and we had an amazing time,” Lou’ana says. “It was unique because you don’t normally get to play on a pontoon and the crowd were really responsive.

“We had no hesitation in saying yes when we were asked to come back – in fact we are really happy to have been asked,” she says.

Two Many Chiefs consists of Lou’ana, her partner Dillon Riesterer (vocals/keys), Cam Sangster (drums), Cam McArthur (double bass) and Jason Herbert (vocals/guitar), who formed out of the larger 11-piece Auckland funk jazz band Hipstamatics about three and a half years ago.

Since last February’s gig, the band (minus Jason) have spent 18 weeks performing seven nights a week on a cruise ship travelling from Vancouver to Alaska, something which has seen them develop musically as a result.

“We definitely experimented musically in that time,” Lou’ana says. “We went on board with four sets of material which would cover two nights with no doubleups and we learned so many songs we could have no double-ups for six days.”

Lou’ana also learned the guitar on board and will be playing that on the pontoon in Matamata this year. She also has a debut EP ready for release later this year, titled 50s Love Tales.

So Matamata audiences can expect some of the cruise experience to transfer to Two Many Chiefs’ performance this year.

“We will be doing a mixture of wellknown classics which we have revamped in our own way which I would describe as blues/jazz/soul, with a few originals in there as well and some more 60s classics – it is an eclectic mix.

The 40-plus demographic attracted to the Matamata event is Lou’ana’s favourite to perform to.

“They were bought up with the best music and they appreciate it and don’t take it for granted.

“Usually when we perform at a bar it is the older patrons who will come up and express how much they loved it and felt it musically and wanted to be a part of it.

“Whereas the younger audiences have been deprived of it because the music scene is flooded with the same kind of pop music,” Lou’ana says.

Playing on the same bill as New Zealand music legend Bic Runga is a first for Lou’ana and the band.

“I have played at the same gig as her sister Boh but never alongside Bic – I am a big fan and it will be exciting to be playing with a New Zealand star who is a great songwriter,” she says.

“This concert is unique and it is an event that you can look forward to and I think it will grow every year because it is such a cool place.”

Matamata hosts annual swim meet

A

highlight of the summer calendar for many regional swimmers is the annual Matamata Sponsored Swim Meet. On Saturday, 240 swimmers enjoyed a fantastic programme of events with many shaving time off personal bests and improving individual standing.

This annual meet couldn’t be possible without the continued and appreciated support of local businesses and like previous years, the 2018 event was certainly a great success with fantastic competition, closely contended racing and some great results. Teams from all over the North Island continue to support what has become

one of the most noted events of the swimming season and as well as having a large contingent travelling, Matamata was very well represented with talented swimmers.

With competitors from North Shore, Greerton, Thames, Te Aroha, Fairfield, St Peter’s, St Paul’s and Liz van Welie Aquatics, it was a particular thrill to see two Matamata Swimming Club members celebrate overall success. Lucy Lawrence took out the girls 10 years and under 100SC Meter IM with a time of 1:28.13, the 100 SC Meter Freestyle in 1:14.59, and she placed second overall in the 100 SC Meter Butterfly. Jordan Rogers placed second in

the women’s 15 and over 100 SC Meter backstroke with a time of 1:14.99, and third in the 100 SC Meter freestyle with a time of 1:03.20.

After individual events including freestyle, backstroke, breaststroke and butterfly were completed, the very exciting Skinz events were held over two categories for boys and girls. Beginning with the eight fastest swimmers on the day, competitors swim a 50m length with the last swimmer being eliminated with each round held every two minutes. After swimming six lengths, the final two competitors go head to head in the final – which as you

can imagine, is extremely exciting and intense particularly as the athletes are beginning to tire! This year, North Shore Swimming Club took out the entire Skinz competition with Zoe Crawford winning the girls under 12 juniors, Daniel Zheng the boys under 12 juniors, Carina Doyle the over 13 senior girls and Wilrich Coetzee, the over 13 senior boys.

Particular thanks went to the many volunteers who assisted on the day including recorders, timekeepers and many who gave up their time freely to ensure organization and coordination went smoothly.

Walsh family fun day ince the inaugural school in 1967, the Walsh Memorial Scout Flying School has educated hundreds of students, most of which have flown solo by the end of the two week course. When you

consider that many of these young people don’t even have their drivers licence, this obviously, is a huge achievement. Around 25% of graduates then go on to pursue careers within the field of aviation.

There are many volunteers involved with each annual school that take personal satisfaction in seeing the transition in the students and for that reason alone, continue to offer their time, expertise and assistance year after year. Over a dozen owners lend their planes for student instruction and when you consider the value of these aircraft, they are certainly putting immense trust in the establishment. Walsh

Memorial Scout Flying School continues to attract many of the best instructors in the country and has earned a superior reputation in flying. It is an extremely intensive and concentrated experience and an excellent start for young pilots. Organisers are very grateful for the continued support in all aspects of the course from flying to feeding, and teaching to tenting.

After almost two weeks of intensive instruction and flying, Walsh Flying School students enjoyed the opportunity to invite their family and friends to campus for an insight into their experience.

Creating a lot of interest on Saturday at the Family fun day, this RNZAF NH90 Helicopter is one of eight purchased in 2011 and was one of the first to be delivered. Based at Ohakea, it is used for everything from battlefield support to transporting troops.

This beautiful one to two year old tortishell female was found with her kittens.

She now needs a loving family of her own.

Affectionate and loving she will make someone a gorgeous pet.

Members of Matamata Volunteer Fire Brigade are only too happy to assist the Walsh Flying School and as well as providing water for the swimming pool, are a huge part of the inter-flight challenges! Reuben Woolliams is pictured ready to fire up the water slide!

After nailing the water pong challenge and the slip ‘n’ slide, Flight 4 team members James Campbell, Noah Woolf and Jordan King had to consume dry Weetbix, a chilli and a sardine respectively to move onto the next challenge. Yum!

Memories in the rocks in the Drive rom time to time over the years the Centennial Drive Committee has seen a need to commemorate a significant person or event with a permanent feature of some kind. There are now four such memorial stone features in the Drive.

The Tainui St Entrance: In the early days of the Drive, much thought was given to providing an impressive entry at the Tainui St entrance. Massive wrought iron gates were suggested and rejected as being out of date and unoriginal. An attractive modern design by Jim Cotter, incorporating a seriously large rock as a central feature, a pool and a fountain, was adopted. The obvious answer for the central rock was Hinuera Stone, but what was needed was a naturally weathered stone, not a quarried block. Prospecting in the Hinuera Valley area located a suitable free-standing column. The next problem was to get it to the Drive. It was indeed large, fifteen tons as it turned out. Getting it on to a low loader was no easy task, but by the expenditure of much time, sweat, ingenuity, sheer hard work, the judicious use of explosives, the help of a crane (rated at 12 tons) and some risk to life and limb, the job was done.

Just as well there was no traffic officer about when this heavy load was on the road! Arriving in the Drive in the late afternoon, the truck was left overnight, and by morning the wheels had sunk deeply into the soft ground. More perspiration and the use of a block and tackle were required before a crane finally lifted the rock into its place and the construction of the pool and fountain could go ahead. All praise to the committee and volunteers of the time for a brilliant operation which gave us the very fine entry fea-

ture we have today, commemorating the pioneer settlers of the district, both Maori and European.

The Broadway Entrance: Many years later it was decided that the Broadway entrance to the Drive also deserved a striking feature, and the centennial of the Matamata township and district in 2004 seemed like a suitable occasion for the project. Again thoughts turned to Hinuera Stone.

A concept sketch by David Stanley incorporated a large, rounded, central rock flanked by two rocks of contrasting shape, one erect and one horizontal. Again naturally weathered stones were required. The Committee spent an enjoyable morning on Lachie Duncan’s farm in the Hinuera Valley and some suitable rocks were located, of a size which could be relatively easily transported to the Drive and placed according to the plan. Attractive plantings completed the project.

The Viola Bell memorial: After the death of Miss Viola Bell, long-time President of the Drive Society and initiator of many innovative projects, it was decided that a suitable memorial feature in the Viola Bell Magnolia Grove would be a fitting tribute. Someone on the committee had noticed a suitably large boulder on the side of the road near the Kaimai summit; but how to get it to the site? Then we remembered “No sweat to Swaps”, and in due course a Swap truck picked up the rock as a back load, delivered it to the Drive, and set it in place. A memorial plaque and appropriate plantings saw the project completed.

The John McCaw Memorial Cairn: A prominent early resident of Matamata was John McCaw, the last manager of the original Matamata Estate prior to the sub-division of 1904, overseer of the transition to over a hundred smaller farms and owner of the Tower Farm which he was allocated as a result of the Ballot. While she was living at the Tower John McCaw’s daughter Judy often noticed a handsome man on horseback passing by.

Moana. One day Judy said “That’s the man I’m going to marry”, and so it turned out. She became Judy Payze and went to live at Peria. We knew that on the Payze farm there were paddocks with numerous rocks of various sizes, the remnants of a lava flow or debris avalanche from the nearby Te Tapui volcano. The family connection made these an ideal source for material to make a memorial to John McCaw. These andesite boulders have a much higher bulk density than Hinuera Stone because of the iron and other heavy minerals they contain, so a piece of andesite is much heavier than a piece of Hinuera Stone of the same size, and a single large rock would have been much too heavy to handle. This suggested that a cairn would be the best option, Stones were collected and the cairn was built in the McCaw Native Block in the Drive. Incidentally, these four rock features are a pocket history of volcanism in the Matamata district. The Tainui St entrance rock is composed of Hinuera Stone, aka Ongatiti Ignimbrite, just over a million years old.

The Broadway entrance features rocks of the slightly younger Ahuroa Ignimbrite. Both of these were erupted from a source near Mangakino. The Viola Bell memorial is Waiteariki Ignimbrite, about two million years old, erupted from a centre a short distance north of the Kaimai road summit and the McCaw cairn is built of rocks of Kiwitahi andesite, erupted around five million years ago from Te Tapui.

In the Drive This Month There are only a few flowers to be seen in the Drive at present, mainly hydrangeas, including those fancy lace-cap varieties opposite the Magnolia Grove. Just now the Drive is all about shade, from the dappled shade of the birches and beeches to the deep shade of the conifers and other large trees, often with a cooling breeze that often comes with the trees. The shady Drive offers a welcome relief from the scorching heat of the streets, so pack the thermos and the biscuit tin and enjoy a cool afternoon tea under the trees. David Stanley Collection.

Fishing Report

i! Here we go off on the journey of another year of our lives! Let’s hope you can find a nice balance of work and pleasure. One of the nicest forms of recreation is fishing and if you are a fisho, you’ll know what I’m saying is true. If you’re not, then give yourself a treat and get out there and try it! This time of the year our local streams and rivers are a joy to fish. At this stage use small spinners or dry flies and if possible, fish the change of light in the evening.

In the Rotorua area, the lake temperatures are getting up – some areas recording as high as 23 degrees. Those high temps make the stream mouths running into Lake Rotorua very attractive. The trout will sit there in the cold water waiting for your fly or lure. For overall performance you cant beat Lake Rotoiti at the moment. They got a great haul of excellent trout by jigging Vercoe’s Reef. The best one was six pound caught by our grandson Latham – a very happy boy he was!

To the south to Taupo. The rivers down there have had a big flush out. Yes, they got a lot of rain last week that we missed. This means the rivers are now in great condition and are a joy to fish. According to my information, the first place I would try would be the Tauranga/Taupo. Out on the lake there is a few recovering fish that were flushed out with the heavy rain. However, there is still enough good ones to justify your efforts.

Local trout guru Gary Chittick caught a dozen nice ones last week using the down rigger.

To the sea and let’s look at the west coast first. Its been an excellent summer so far as Mother Nature goes out west – a lot of calm days and workable bars. Dwayde Pinny tells

me it has been one of his better ones on snapper and it continues to be that way. Last week the first marlin for the season was weighed in at Kawhia so the big boys have arrived too. Great ah?

Up to the Coromandel, and more good news. There have been a few patchy periods but generally the snapper fishing has continued to be good all the way through Christmas and New Year. Snapper Safaris skipper, Darryll, tells me that earlier on, the best fishing was off Waikawau and Wilson’s Bay, and a bit quiet down his end at Coromandel. However now he tells me the fishing at the Coromandel end has improved big time.

Over the ranges to the Mercury Bay area and Big John, skipper of The Whai, tells me the fishing has been quite good around the Merc’s. He went on to say though, that the best fishing has been on his trips to the Barrier. John has been fishing mainly on the

eastern, Arrid Island side and has had several snapper over that magical 20lb mark.

Out in the Bay of Plenty the blue water is in and the game fish are here. Friday night a boat from Tauranga weighed in a Blue Marlin at a magnificent 350.2kg (772lb). Basically, one of the local bulls with a tail on one end and a bill on the other! Another exciting thing is that there has been quite a few Yellowfin Tuna caught. In the Whakatane area there has been more weighed this season than the total for the past five years. Still not big numbers, but encouraging.

I would like to dedicate this report today to my good friend and fishing mate, Paul Baker (Motor). He lost the fight of his life to brain tumours last week. Motor has landed a lot of big ones in his day – sadly this one beat him. I am proud to have shared so many wonderful hours on the water with you mate.
