ncredibly it is this very day, March 20, one year ago that Stanley Group had the official handover of the Matamata Memorial site after successfully tendering for the demolition and rebuild of one of our community’s most essential assets.

After the Matamata Piako District Council decision to upgrade facilities, it was in 2016 Stanley Group successfully tendered for the rebuild of a new complex to include new council chambers, library and a Civic and Memorial Centre for the benefit of the Matamata community. In submitting tender documents, much thought and planning was given to retaining historical components of the existing building including the salvage of timber flooring, joists, bearers, rafters and trusses for example, that could be retained and presented back to council for re-use. “Working with heritage specialists and conforming to various conditions of resource consent was a time consuming and arduous process” said Stanley Construction Manager, Jason Hill, “but an imperative part of the overall project. It is extremely important that wherever possible, heritage and historical items could be preserved.”

Exactly one year ago, disconnection of services preceded the removal of asbestos before demolition could begin. As most are aware, removal of asbestos required a stringent process with thorough testing. With additional asbestos not previously identified onsite, demolition was delayed until successful removal and compliance was completed. Soon after, the arrival of two diggers and a large number of trucks began the demolition process. Scrap metal and anything that could be burned was sorted, items for recycling or reuse were removed and endless trips to landfill followed! A portion of the library was retained which, given its sound structure, was revamped and transitioned into the new building.

Absolutely thrilled with the final result, the entire Stanley team, their staff and sub-contractors are looking forward to the community opening gala event on April 14. It’s going to be an incredibly exciting time and we’ll look forward to catching up with the team once they’ve caught their breath! Until then, drive past, have a gizz and mark the date on your calendar.

Celebrating 3rd Dan success raeme Catlin, 5th Dan Black Belt, was excited to see two of his “more mature” students gain special recognition recently having both achieved their 3rd Dan Black Belt. Gavin Fisher and David Young have been practicing the art of Jiu Jitsu for 35 and 20 years respectively and, as well as constantly improving their own standing, are also committed to teaching the skill to locals at both junior and senior level.

Having practiced the martial art for over 45 years and instigating the formation of a local club, Graeme has enjoyed much success at many national competitions, even qualifying for world championship entry.

He also had the honour of being inducted into the New Zealand Martial Arts Hall of Fame in November 2009. “With Jiu Jitsu” Graeme says, “You just never stop learning. The art itself is a combination of sev-

eral martial arts including judo, aikido, karate, wrestling and boxing, and not only teaches people self-defence, but also helps develop self-confidence” he says. “I have personally trained hundreds of students and it has always been extremely satisfying to see them achieve their goals with each higher grade belt. Gavin and David have worked extremely hard over the years and it was an honour to see them achieve their 3rd Dan Black Belt recently.”

With weekly training and encouragement, people aged from just five years to 65 years are learning excellent self-defence, discipline and control techniques that will stand them in good stead for the rest of their lives says David, a NZMAI registered instructor. “Our juniors especially, enjoy tournaments as a way to test their skills in a competitive and safe environment. Of course taking home medals and

certificates is always pretty neat for them too!”

David ensures members are learning from the best and says that Jiu Jitsu is very much a martial art that teaches self-defence rather than aggression. “Learning the right techniques enable you to overpower attackers that may be stronger and bigger than you” he says, “It is a great selfesteem and confidence builder, and so much more about technique. You certainly don’t have to be the size of a wrestler to keep yourself safe.”

Encouraging more adults to take a look at the sport, David adds that Jiu Jitsu is an excellent way to keep fit and get a whole body workout. “I’m not one of those people that can spend hours in the gym lifting weights or going for a run up the road” he laughs! “But spending a couple of hours every week training does pretty much the same job without my brain registering its hard work or exercise!”

Jiu Jitsu is fantastic for agility and movement and suits any size, shape, age and gender. All training sessions are held at the Firth School multi-purpose room with the first two sessions free to give prospective members an introduction to the sport. “We really like to welcome new members” says David, “don’t ever feel intimidated in just turning up. We really support each other and have a great time learning ways to avoid people’s aggression and improve and perfect skills at our own pace.”

Revamping Rapurapu Reserve

ith a mission to protect our awa, our whenua (river and land), Friends of Local Community, the Rapurapu Reserve Committee, held their first working bee on Saturday and were thrilled with the turnout. “We particularly appreciate the generosity of J Swap Contractor’s Ltd who not only lent us portaloo facilities but also a truck for clean-up disposal” says Nick Evans, Project Manager.

Centennial Drive acknowledge long service

A

fter seeing a bunch of people working at Centennial Drive, local bloke Jim Paton decided to make a few enquiries about offering an extra pair of hands. “It was great to see these people tidying up, trimming, weeding and basically just taking pride in our community” says Jim. “I was pretty keen to help and after speaking to the president of the time, Arnold Phillips, was welcomed in by the team.”

Acknowledging his long standing service, current president of the Centennial Drive Development Society, Dave Dawson, was thrilled to present Jim with a Life Membership award recently. “Jim has been an invaluable member of the team over the past 23 years” said Dave, “and it’s with a great deal of pleasure we would like to officially recognise this. He is the type of bloke that gets things done and whether that’s his commitment to ensuring everyone is health and safety conscious or assisting the planning committee with maintenance schedules for the next working bee, we’ve come to rely on his expertise and dedication.”

In accepting his award, Jim was extremely humbled - and he laughs, quite chuffed! “It’s pretty neat to be recognised” he said, “but doing what we do in the drive is a huge team effort. The friendship and community camaraderie is something I really enjoy and over the past 23 years, I guess I’ve become pretty familiar with almost every plant in there. I don’t really have a favourite – to be honest I love the entire place from one end right to the other! We are a pretty good team and it’s great to work alongside people that see what needs doing and just do it.”

Of course that includes trimming and pruning regularly which requires the use of chainsaws or larger equipment. Obviously health and safety policies are essential and we very strictly adhere to them.”

he general public is invited to attend the official opening of the Matamata College Centenary on Saturday 24 March at 11am. All those who have registered will be present as well as the official party and invited guests.

Parking for the public will be available on the rugby field behind the college using the Station Road entrance. It will be available in the surrounding streets too but not Firth Street which the organisers wish to keep free of cars. Members of Matamata Rotary will be directing the traffic there. Please tell them if you want the disabled parking area which is near the entry to the marquees and also near a pathway leading to the College Library.

Disabled parking is also located behind the old bus sheds in the school grounds. Entry to this is from Firth Street and will be marked by a sign.

The official proceedings will take place in front of the College Administration and Hall Block. Seating will be reserved for se-

nior citizens who need to sit down.

The College Library is the information centre for the Jubilee. Registered guests need to go there to collect their registration pack containing information, a key ring and a lanyard which is their name tag and shows entry to paid functions in the marquees and their copy of the Jubilee Book if it has been ordered. It is also the gathering place to start booked guided tours of the school. The Library is open Friday and Saturday 8am - 8pm.

A map is available which shows some of these important places including the disabled parking areas and disabled toilet facilities. Two of the latter are the first in the Administration Block in the sick bay area and the second is behind the Bradley Gym, and will be the nearest to the marquees where paid functions are being held.

The Hall of Memorabilia, which depicts the history of the school with photographs, articles, etc is open free to the public who will be welcome 8am - 8pm Friday and

Saturday and 10am - 2pm on Sunday. Tea will be available here.

Food stalls will be located around the campus and their wares will be available for purchase by the public on Saturday.

Coffee and ice cream will also be available on Friday.

The final official occasion is a non denominational church service held at the Matamata Intermediate School in Smith Street at 10.30am on Sunday 25 March.

Extra activities organised by individuals who welcome people to either participate or watch. These are Lisa’s Run, Hockey, Netball, and Golf. There will also be a rugby game at Bedford Park 12.30pm on Saturday. Touring team West Vancouver High School will be playing a 1st and 2nd XV Matamata College team.

Remember to read the signs which will give directions to guests and visitors and tell you if any changes have been made to arrangements.

Kiwanis and CAB helping our community hane recently started his first job and thinks he’s being paid less than what was agreed to – but there wasn’t anything in writing. Mira’s landlord just put her rent up and it’s only been five months since the last rent rise. Morgan’s neighbour likes holding loud parties on week nights. Vinod and Geeta recently migrated to New Zealand and want to find schools for their children.

“These are the sorts of issues people bring every day to the CAB” says Linda Hodge, Chairperson of Matamata CAB. “We sit down with them and help them work through what their options are. We have volunteers who undergo intensive training, as well as regular ongoing learning sessions so they are up to date with legislation and policy changes” she says. “We have access to an enormous wealth of information online, which complements our volunteers’ knowledge and skills.”

With online information crucial to the service provided at the Citizen’s Advice Bureau, Linda and the team were thrilled to receive an extremely generous donation from the Kiwanis Club of Matamata recently. Not only were they able to replace one of the computers that had previously been donated, they were also able to purchase a new laptop computer. “The laptop particularly, is an excellent investment in ongoing training opportunities given it is compatible with projectors etc” says Linda.

“We are extremely grateful to the Kiwanis Club.”

Charity golf for fire station hen Matthew Hart, owner/operator of New World Matamata approached Matamata Golf Club looking to sponsor a charity tournament just over two years ago, Manager Graeme Reid and the club committee had no hesitation in accepting his generous offer - immediately with local benefactors and/or organisations in mind.

“Having previously hosted fundraising tournaments for Ronald McDonald House, we were thrilled to accept Matthew’s offer to further enable financial support to local initiatives” said Graeme. The first two were extremely successful and currently being organized, the third Charity Golf tournament sponsored by Matthew along with Lion, Fonterra, Nestle and BNZ, will benefit the Matamata Volunteer Fire Brigade.”

In previous years we have been overwhelmed with the generosity of so many, and are extremely confident the day will once again be a lot of fun and a very successful fundraiser.”

Matamata FENZ (Fire Emergency New Zealand), Chief Fire Officer Kevin Curtis is extremely grateful to Matamata Golf Club tournament organisers. “There are always training initiatives or emergency equipment items on our wish list that will further enhance the service we can provide to our community” he says. “Obviously we work closely with St John and Police for example and there are instances where as first responders, having more specialised equipment would be extremely advantageous.”

With entries still open, Matamata Golf Club is hoping the 2018 event will be well supported and welcomes enquiry from anyone interested in getting involved. “It’s a lot of fun and an ideal opportunity to enjoy a relaxed day with friends, work colleagues or as an individual” says Heather.

With the support of our suppliers, we were able to run the very successful Challenge Challenge 2018 Golf Series at Walton Golf Course in February this year.

Community games for Pohlen hen Pohlen Foundation Trustee Jacob Henderson had the idea of hosting a Paper, Scissors, Rock tournament there may have been a few that thought he was mad! As it happened however, the community wide tournament was a whole lot of fun, built on hugely positive ‘Pohlen awareness’ – and made a tidy pile of cash!

Around 500 participants from local business to service clubs and other organisations pitted their skill against their colleagues until one winner emerged who was then invited to the grand final held at Redoubt Bar & Eatery last Sunday.

Success with fish and game tournament

W

ith an enjoyable prize giving afternoon at Matamata Club Inc. on Sunday, the fourth annual Fishing and Game competition was another great success despite windy conditions on the water.

With 59 adults and 16 children registered for the weekend competition, organisers Steve and Linda Dench and Selena Gage were thrilled with the turnout. “We had an extra women’s category added this year for the heaviest kingfish and/or snapper” says Linda, “which was sponsored by Nicky Telford and Eileen Ward. It was great to see the ladies out there and when you look at some of their results, obviously they had a pretty successful weekend!”

Another new category added this year, was the teams event where up to four could enter with prizes for the heaviest kingfish or snapper, and pig or deer. “I was actually pretty excited about that” laughs Denchy. “We were in the bush on Friday evening and saw over a dozen wild pigs so were amped to get back up there on Saturday once competition started. You wouldn’t bloody credit it though” he laughs, “when we got back there we didn’t see a single one so that sort of blew that idea!

Our second choice hunting spot – one where we’re almost always lucky, was also skint of any decent hunting with a Moto-X event up there obviously sending anything worth chasing far into the hills!

Needless to say we returned home with clean bullets and an empty bin!”

As far as the fishing over the weekend went, Coromandel it seems was the destination of choice with conditions everywhere else pretty average according to many who ventured out. High winds and rough seas made fishing hard work. On behalf of Matamata Club and all the sponsors however, Steve and Linda passed on their appreciation to everyone who took part in the 2018 tournament.

College sports round-up ith provisional results through from Thames Valley its looks we have successfully defended the Combined Points Shield for 2018. Our team of 70 athletes performed well with Ethan Wallace and Ollie Morton-Farrelly up to their record-breaking ways again!

Ethan broke both the intermediate boys 100m and 200m sprints, with times of 11.32 and 23.13. Ollie broke the junior boys shot put record with a 13.77m throw,

Other first places went to Te Aorere Wharawhara (2), Rochelle Lind, Nikisha Todd, Ollie Morton-Farrelly, Ben Mason, Levi Webber, Reagen Powell, Haydn Muter and Mollie Allison for field events. Three of our teams were successful at the Thames Valley Touch Tournament.

The senior mixed, junior boys and junior girls’ teams all made semi-finals but didn’t get the win to move onto finals. The junior girls grade, which was smaller than the others had time for a 3rd/4th play-off match which our girls won. Matt O’Brien spent the day as team referee, at one stage officiating 6 games in a row! Without much build-up in terms of trainings these teams relied on each other to work out plays and communicate them on the field during the day. Stand-out individuals were George Samuels, Lyric Davis, Kadaphi King, Waata Wharawhara, Connor Goodwin, Trinity Sdeoung and Alex Thompson.

Two squads travelled to Pukekohe to attend the Pukekohe High School, Waiuku College, Kings College hosted shoot at Auckland Metropolitan Gun Club. 105 shooters from 10 schools attended.

Our top shooter for the day was Sean Allen with a score of 83 out of a possible 90. Shaun Colson was our top Junior Shooter with a score of 78. Shaun was in the shoot off for 2nd and 3rd place in the Junior shooter grade. He dropped one shot to be placed in 3rd place, a top effort by Shaun! Our top five shooters were Sean Allen, 83 points; Jackson Diprose, 81 points; Shaun Colson, 78 points and his 25 clay badge as well (that means 25 clays taken consecutively); Bryn Allen, 76 points and Alex Colson, 74 points. A great day with some excellent shooting.

A small team of tennis players attended the Waikato Secondary Schools tennis championships. The players will benefit from the experience of the competition.

This is it, my 100th theatre column for Scene, and I would like to thank Caron for giving me the opportunity to share my passion for local theatre with you all.

I hope you have found what I have written interesting and enjoyed some of the productions I have mentioned.

A couple of weeks ago I went to the world premiere of Devon Williamson’s “The Jailhouse Frocks”, a comedy about three very different women who find themselves sharing a cell in America guarded by a very inept jailer with a passion for Carmen Miranda. For anyone contemplating subdividing with the intention of doing a new build in Matamata, here is the scenario I went through. I realise every situation would not replicate mine but this is my experience. I paid the first invoice from the surveyor on October 7, 2015 and finally got to the stage of receiving the title in May 2017 – over 18 months later and found this time frame unacceptable. Power and phone companies required payment upfront – not a deposit but the full Monty! The power company gave me a timeline of six weeks to do the job, but took well over two months. The phone company took between three and four months.

By comparison, the actual build went well!

Fishing Report

i all, I hope all is good with you. Have you noticed a bit of a change in the weather? Yes, autumn is on our doorstep, particularly with this south-easterly breeze we have had over the last few days. On the fishing front though, autumn is a great time of the year.

On the local trout scene, the streams are looking a picture and flowing quite low and clear. I have had some excellent reports of nice trout being caught in the evenings. If you are fly fishing use small weighted nymphs and drop them into some of the deeper pools. The fish are lying in them because they are a bit cooler.

In the Rotorua area local trout guide, Glen Skinner, tells me the fishing is excellent. Glen in particular, made mention of the stream mouths running into Lake Ro-

www.sceneonline.co.nz torua. A great example of that is the Ngongataha. I know of a guy the other day who landed three brownies over five pound there. Now they are nice fish. Glen also mentioned the jigging on Rotoiti and Tarawera was very productive.

In the Taupo region the rainbows are starting to move into the rivers to spawn.

This makes for very good fishing as they are in very good condition being fresh run fish. Ex local, Bob Bevege (smooth hound) now lives down there and he has been getting some beauties on the Tauranga/Taupo.

To the sea now and lets have a look at the west coast first – and for variety, you can’t go past it. Recently Mother Nature has been kind and produced quite a lot of easterlies. This of course keeps the west

coast bars calm and workable. Charter skipper, Dwayde Pinny tells me he has been working the 50 to 55m depth out off Albatross Point. They have been returning most days with good numbers of snapper, gurnard, kahawai and some nice kingis.

Also out west at the moment are good numbers of game fish. A friend of mine has tagged four marlin out off the Manukau in the past week.

The good old number one though everything considered – especially safety, would be the Coromandel. Autumn is the very best time of the year for fishing up there.

For every half a degree of drop in the water temperature, the fish feed up more.

This means longer bite times as the fish put on condition for the winter months ahead of them. This week there are quite

big tides so try fishing some of the close in forms as they will have more current running through them.

Over the ranges to the Mercury Bay and the Bay of Plenty, while the easterlies have been kind to the west coast fisho’s, it’s not so on the eastern side of the island. The weekend, while sunny overhead, was very scruffy out at sea – wind warnings and big swells. This week by Wednesday it looks to be settling down a bit. For those looking for a marlin, you could take a leaf out of Matt Dalton’s book and head to the western side of Mayor. Matt, Charlene and the kids headed out there last week and caught their third marlin for the season.
