n 50 years of living on his Springs Road property, Bill Storey has never seen anything quite like what he came across recently.

Two paddocks on his farm looked like they had been dusted with a decent load of fertiliser from a distance, but up close it was far more obvious that thousands and thousands of little spiders had had an extremely busy morning! According to his

son, the paddocks were clear around 9.30am last Monday morning. However just a few hours later, Bill couldn’t quite believe his eyes! “The spiders were little bigger than an ant” said Bill, “and what attracted them to these two paddocks in particular, I have no idea. It may be something to do with the clover but I was absolutely astounded. It is literally one of those wonders of nature!”

ting their green fingers against each other to find a winner in the novel competition where spuds are grown inside a plastic bucket.

Rotary Matamata director Mike Farrell says it is amazing to see the efforts of the leading entrants. “Peter Thissen, who has won this event three times (2013, 2014 and 2017), consistently produces more than 6kg of potatoes from his bucket – and he does not give away too many growing secrets either,” Mike says.

Two-time winner Tom Troughton is another who performs well each year. “It is all about having some fun, a bit of friendly banter and a lot of laughs,” Mike says. “Noone takes it too seriously. There are some rules though. The most important is that only potatoes still attached to the plant and in the bucket when produced for weigh-in will count,” he says. Mike says growing conditions during this year’s competition period, which runs from Labour Weekend, have been different to previous years. “It will be very interesting to see what the combination of hot, humid conditions and plenty of summer rain has done to the crops which are produced this year.”

will be happening at Railside by the Green, from 5.30pm on Tuesday March 6. Contestants are reminded to cut the greenery off the top of their entry prior to arriving at the weigh-in. The potatoes grown in the event will be donated to the Matamata Foodbank.

Stevenson Trust for Pohlen When the idea of a charitable trust solely to raise funds for capital expenditure at Pohlen Hospital was mooted nearly 13 years ago, Lindsay Tisch was one of the first to put his hand up for the Pohlen Foundation. He fully supported the Pohlen Hospital Board using their operational budget for day to day running of the facilities and clinical care expenditure, but believed the concept of creating an independent fundraising arm for capital purchases and improvement had expediential. Hence, the formation of the Pohlen Foundation was established.

“It was very apparent that to continue providing exceptional care and facilities to a growing community, steps needed to be taken to ensure the complex would continue in coming years” says Lindsay. “Obviously with a community owned asset like Pohlen Hospital, providing facilities to complement our tenants such as Matamata Medical Centre and pharmacy, Med Lab and visiting specialists and consultants, it was imperative we met the needs of our health professionals and the community.”

In 2005 the Pohlen Foundation Trust began appealing to various funding organisations and trusts, utilising personal contacts and networking opportunities, and introducing a variety community events to raise funds for necessary improvements, refurbishments and capital investments to ensure long term longevity.

“In just over 12 years we have enabled significant improvement to hospital infrastructure” says Lindsay, “and although initial improvements are not always obviously apparent to the community, refurbishment to water reticulation, fire alarm systems and even the carpark were essen-

Pohlen Foundation applying to the Stevenson Village Trust Board based in Auckland for funding towards the purchase of a van to transport Pohlen Hospital residents – particularly those that are wheelchair bound. They were delighted to hear the application was successful and thanks to this Foundation’s generosity, were able to purchase the new vehicle which can accommodate three wheelchairs along with seating for carers.

Beefing up Pohlen

ocal couple Terry and Anna Allison feel extremely fortunate to live in a community that boasts their own community owned hospital that literally caters from the cradle to the grave. They also realise how lucky they are that all of their experiences with Pohlen so far, have been those of excitement and/or complete appreciation.

“Our three children, now aged 16, 14 and 12 were all born at Pohlen” says Anna, “and as a result, we had the most incredible introduction to parenthood. The care and support we received during those first few days after having each child will never be underestimated or forgotten. Thankfully the only other experience we have had is with short respite care for our elderly grandmother who, like us, has always been made to feel secure, cared for and quite at home during her stays.”

With consultancy room upgrades, it is hoped more specialists will be enticed to have regular clinics at Pohlen which will alleviate the need for local residents to travel to main centres. “We are proud to offer our support for a second year” says Anna, “especially with our kids, parents and grandparents getting older. You never know when you might require various services provided at Pohlen, so you could say we’re actually future proofing or succession planning” she laughs! “Everyone has busy lives so it’s great that the Board and Foundation are constantly looking at ways of further supporting our community.”

Because of their own experiences and in appreciation of such a fantastic community asset, it was when reading a story about the Beefing up Pohlen initiative two years ago that the couple decided to support the idea. “Farming is as much a business as any other in a rural community like ours” says Terry, “so as a way to give something back, we decided to contact the Foundation and offer our support. The initiative was an easy way for us to contribute without the need to find cold hard cash” he says, “and it’s all so easily sorted.”

Having raised in excess of $90,000 over the past six years, the Beefing up Pohlen proceeds significantly helped with the End of Life wing which opened in May 2016 and are now earmarked for the refurbishment of consultant rooms. “I would love to see more rural people join the initiative”

Putting the left feet right

here’s something pretty awesome about a man that knows his way round a dancefloor and thanks to local bloke, Troy Smith, the opportunity for everyone to learn some pretty suave moves is coming to Matamata.

Now before all you blokey blokes start fading away into a dazed oblivion, these classes are designed for the absolute beginner – even those with self-proclaimed, double left feet. Of course the classes are not just for men but with a reasonable number of women keen to learn, a definite shortage of male partners is already apparent.

For Troy, probably better known locally as the manager of Repco with a passion for all things automotive, learning to dance was something that started as a child. “I would have only been seven or eight when, as the younger brother, I was almost forced into partnering my two older sisters” he laughs. “We were taught by the late Faye Harbottle and ironically, by the time I was old enough to make my own choice, I continued with it and became pretty competitive.

Sure there were a few years I copped a bit of flack particularly as a teenager but, by the time I was in my late teens and early 20s, I was achieving significant national and international success. A real highlight was placing first in Ballroom and fourth in Latin American at the Hong Kong Open in 1999.”

Although Troy hasn’t competed so much in recent years, he has thoroughly enjoyed continued involvement with events such as the Harcourts Dancing with the Stars for Hospice in Rotorua, and teaching private lessons to couples for weddings or other special occasions. “After increased enquiry, my wife Amy suggested public lessons might be worth considering” says Troy, “so we put the suggestion out on Facebook and have honestly been blown away by the enthusiasm.”

With the idea of using modern, well known music to teach a couple of popular dance styles in just six weeks, Troy is confident people will really enjoy themselves. “Latin American particularly, is high energy, fast and a lot of fun when you become confident with the steps” he says. “There are a lot of people that see these dances performed – especially with the resurgence of televised Dancing with the Stars type programmes, that quietly wish they could have a crack at it. This is your chance and if nothing else, will definitely give you a bit of confidence next time you’re put on the spot at your father’s uncle’s nephew’s son’s wedding!

Hip hooray for Harry!

big congratulations goes out to local resident and former top jockey Noel Harris as one of the latest inductees into the New Zealand Racing Hall Of

Fame.

Noel, or “Harry,” as he is known by friends and family, was a popular inductee with the audience of around 300 racing enthusiasts gathered at Skycity Hamilton last Friday week applauding his entry into the New Zealand Racing Hall Of Fame (NZRHOF). Another local, deceased champion sire O’Reilly, who stood at Waikato Stud after a Group One-winning career from the local stable of Dave and Paul O’Sullivan, was also inducted, as were a couple of champion trainers, Chris Waller and Murray Baker.

Others in the latest round of nine inductees were the durable and great weight-carrying jumper Brookby Song, Sir Woolf Fisher (founder of Ra Ora Stud and co-founder of Fisher and Paykel), the top galloper Veandercross, the champion free-running stayer Might And Power and Tod Hewitt, one of the greatest New Zealand jockeys of alltime and a revolutionary who introduced the crouch riding style to this country. “It’s such an honour to be among so many greats,” said Noel, acknowledging not only the latest inductees but also the other legendary names among the 75 Hall of Famers. Past inductees include Dave and Lance O’Sullivan, Jim Gibbs, Garry Chittick, great gallopers Mr Tiz and Horlicks and the much-travelled former local, Shane Dye. Noel’s award was sponsored by Majestic Horsefloats with John Kenny making the presentation to a jockey whom he watched ride so many great races and win so many major events.

Noel was humble when accepting his award, but, sparked up by one of the two MC’s, Steve Davis, with some in-depth questions, he soon had the crowd in raptures, particularly when queried over his success, despite his well-known lack of trackwork riding as a senior jockey.

Steve pointed out the fact Noel had won so many races for Baker yet, when living in Palmerston North and Murray was training in Woodville, he didn’t frequent trackwork to ride his Baker mounts. “We had an understanding,” said Noel with a grin. “Murray didn’t have to say anything, I knew what he was thinking and it worked out well. Besides I didn’t want to stuff them up. The trackwork riders were doing the job well.”

Sir Vigilant in 1985 in the Group One NZ St Leger and Group Two Wellington Derby and other top gallopers he rode for the astute trainer over the years included Eagle Eye (Gr.1 Bayer Classic), Let’s Sgor, Kate’s Myth, Staring and Palliser. Noel also recalled helping put Chris, a son of a Foxton dairy farmer, on his way to a career in training after working then being stable foreman for top trainer Paddy Busuttin. “I remember riding Chris’ first winner when he went out on his own,” said Noel. “Chris wrote a letter to thank me and I’ve still got the letter. It’s great to see him go on to do so well.”

Chris has established himself as the champion trainer in Sydney and has the privilege of training arguably the best mare in the world, Winx, who is unbeaten in her last 22 starts and winner of the last three Cox Plates in Melbourne. Both Murray and Chris applauded Noel’s induction into the NZRHOF, knowing so well the uncanny sense of timing he had in his races and his mastery in the saddle.

Noel was twice leading apprentice jockey and won an NZ Jockeys Premiership and a Singapore/Malaysia Jockeys Premiership during his younger days. His riding career spanned 45 years and he is in the top four jockeys of all-time with 2163 wins to his credit in New Zealand, including 34 Group One wins in this country. He is the equal record-holder with another Hall of Famer, the late Bob Skelton, for the most 3200-metre Cup wins—four New Zealand Cups, three Wellington Cups and three Auckland Cups. He was also the regular rider of the mighty Castletown, who was inducted in the NZRHOF in 2014, Poetic Prince and Kingdom Bay. Noel’s last ride was aboard Pondarosa Miss when she finished fifth in the Gr.1 Fiber Fresh NZ Thoroughbred Breeders Stakes at Te Aroha on April 4, 2015. The previous start he had finished third on her in the Auckland Cup. Talk of Noel’s retirement had been discussed often after his autobiography “Harry, The Ride Of My Life” was released in August 2012, but each season he continued to ride good horses, a few promising to be the next star performer, prolonging his farewell. “I’ve got nothing to prove and now I’m looking forward to my next challenge,” was Noel’s parting comment. And since his retirement he has been influential in the success of apprentice jockeys, excelling in the role of a mentor. And, yes Steve Davis, he has been on hand on more trackwork mornings than during

his riding days. The racing industry applauds Noel’s work with the apprentices and he says it’s more than a job. “It’s good to be able to put something back into the industry,” he said. “If I can help the apprentices in any way I will.”

Noel is respected by the young riders and goes beyond just the raceday and apprentice school dealings with the apprentices. They’re like an extended family to him and it makes him proud to see them succeed. Proud is what his many, many long-time friends felt earlier this month when he became a Hall of Famer. And it wouldn’t have been “Harry” if he didn’t end his time behind the microphone without a quip. “Chris, if you’re stuck for a rider for Winx, give me a call and I’ll make a comeback, “he said looking at him as the crowd erupted into laughter.

Whenever the Olympic Games are on, I stay up way too late watching them on TV. It’s been the same with these Winter Olympics. I’m amazed at the skill and balance of the ice dancers and the sheer nerve of the downhill ski racers and the lugers.

They do it all for the honour of representing their country and hopefully to win a medal. They

train, and sacrifice, and work, to be their best, and if possible to win a medal. We applaud their effort.

Some of us even wish we could do the same.

a trophy that gathers dust over time. Life through faith in Jesus Christ is a forever kind of thing. It never dulls with time and goes on beyond this earthly existence.

The Bible understands this desire to win the prize, but instead of aiming for a cup, or a title, or a medal, the goal is to find real life through faith in Jesus Christ. This is so much more precious than a title that needs defending next year, or

Thanks to the generosity of the late Bruce Stanley and his wife Lesley, Council land that includes part of the Stanley’s farm now connects a walkway from Peria Road to Dawson Street.

The establishment of Stanley Farm Lane began in 2017 and as a fairly straight forward project, Rotary were extremely appreciative of such positive cooperation from Matamata Piako District Council. They were also grateful for the generous support of J Swap Contractor’s Ltd, John Fernyhough, David Thrupp, Neil Bell and Paul Jones who donated time, expertise and materials to complete the 300m walkway.

Led by Rotarian Kevin Sing, the walkway project will continue to be improved with planned planting continuing over time. Four native trees were planted at the opening, each acknowledging the contribution from significant groups. The first by Rotary President Peter Vossen and Rotary District 9930 Governor, Leonie Tisch, the second by MPDC Councillors Brian Hunter and Kevin Tappin, the third by Lesley Stanley on behalf of her late husband and Rotarian, Bruce Stanley and family, and finally, the fourth tree was planted by Ngati Hinerangi Kaumatua Casey Douglas, Kuia and fellow Hapu wahine who also presented an opening karakia and waiata.

Invited guests, Rotarians and supporters then took the opportunity of enjoying the walkway before a BBQ and refreshments were provided at the conclusion.

Proving she’s a long way from finished K iwi music legend Bic Runga is excited about the chance to perform on a pontoon in Matamata, two things she has not done in her career to date.

Bic will headline the fourth annual Rotary Matamata Concert by the Lake on March 4 and shares the pontoon with Auckland-based funky jazz band Two Many Chiefs and Kiwi singer/songwriter Jamie McDell, who has performed at the three previous shows.

The New Zealand Music Hall of Famer is certain she has never performed a solo gig in Matamata and playing a charity show on a floating pontoon on a lake is definitely a first for her. “I am really looking forward to it. I guess there is a little bit of nervous apprehension but there always is when you do something new – it is hard to visualise anything ahead of time when you

have not done a venue before.” Bic says charity events have a completely different feel to other concerts. “It’s not really high stress at all, like when you are trying to promote your own tour – it is kind of nice, and the fact that it is for charity feels like the whole thing has a good vibe.”

After more than two decades in the music business, Bic is still a household name in New Zealand and it can be argued that it is a longevity that is not often seen in today’s commercially driven music scene. But Bic puts her career longevity down to something much simpler – “I can’t do anything else,” she laughs. “I think that it has taken this long to get good at what I do and there is something to be said for people that stick to one thing – I often flirt with the idea of starting something new and reinventing myself like some kind of Martha Stewart, but that is just not me. I think when I am really old, I will look back and find that this is the right thing for me to do – just putting one foot in front of the other and sticking to what I know.”

Currently Bic is juggling motherhood and a career in an industry which she acknowledges is one of the most self-centred and selfish ones possible. “It is a totally selfish job whereas motherhood is quite the opposite, so there is a bit of a contradiction going on right now,” she laughs.

Last year saw the 20th anniversary tour of her debut album Drive, a work that Bic is proud to see has stood the test of time. “I think it is funny to hear stuff 20 years on.

All those live shows we did last year, we played the full Drive album. I think it is cool because some of it has held up quite well and some of it sounds like I was only 19 or 20. But I think it was quite cool to look back and honour that work for what it is and to kind of put it behind me. I think sometimes you can get too attached to what you were and not be able to move on - so it was cool to do that – let it go so I can go forward,” Bic says.

Musically however, Bic feels like she is still to do her best work yet. “I feel like I am going to get to it soon, it’s just the kids are quite young, one of them is only two, one is four and the other is 10, so it is just about trying not to put too much pressure on yourself.” The Matamata show and one other charity performance in Christchurch are likely to be Bic’s only live gigs for 2018 as she concentrates on writing a new album and being a mum while Kody is touring with his own musical projects. “I am literally going to be left holding the baby,” Bic jokes, “and I will try to write an album while doing that. Bic says her music has never been “in the commercial lane” and that she just got lucky 20 years ago and that luck has continued. “Commercial music is electronic or hip hop now and I don’t make that kind of music … I guess I could try to be in that playing field but I don’t think it would be very dignified at my age to try and sound like I am youth-orientated or try to change my sound dramatically. I think you just have to make the record you can make,” Bic says. “I do have a lot of songs on the go at the moment – it’s a bit like a whole lot of pots on the stove and I really just have to do that last bit of getting songs finished and ready to record.”

Bic was also recognised with the New Zealand Music Legacy Award for her contribution to Kiwi music. “It was nice to feel like what I did matters but it also felt a little premature – I am only 42 and you should really be getting those when you are 60. It felt a little like they were assuming that I had finished, which was never the case. “If I want to prove to people that I am not finished, I’d better get a babysitter and do some work.”

She’s gonna be a rockin’ reunion

A

bsolutely pumped about performing at the upcoming Matamata College 100 year reunion, four local good ole boys are looking forward to providing a real good ole time at the Saturday night party function on March 24.

All with personal connections to the school, it’s definitely not ‘just another gig’ for the four musicians - particularly as much of their passion for music was fostered and encouraged during their high school years. And, although almost a couple of decades apart, two of the band members, Murray Wills and Jon Burnside both attended the school, with the remaining members, Peter Mair and Greg Stitchbury also having had close involvement with their respective children completing their secondary education at Matamata College.

“It’s going to be fantastic not only to catch up with old friends and classmates” says Murray, “but also to provide an awesome evening of entertainment that will no doubt have everyone up there dancing and enjoying themselves. I don’t think there is any better reward as a band when you know your audience and can have a bit of fun and banter at the same time.”

Sadie Swap (nee Lewis) January 29, 1914 - December 12, 2017

C

S Lewis once said “You are never too old to set another goal or dream another dream” and as the matriarch of Matamata’s largest business, Sadie Swap certainly achieved her goals and realized her dreams.

The second of five children, Sadie Lewis was born in Wellington on January 29, 1914, moving north with her family in 1916. Her parents Andrew and Emily Lewis, then farmed at Waharoa and she remembered a wonderful childhood with wide open spaces, plenty of interests on the farm and later, dances and sport taking much of her spare time. “Everyone knew each other and the simplicity of life was something we took for granted” Sadie said on the occasion of her 100th birthday.

It was while watching local sport, the young Sadie met Joe Swap, the man who in

1936 became her husband at the All Saints Anglican Church in Matamata. After their honeymoon, the newly married couple moved to Joe’s parents, Bill and Annie Swap’s farm at Te Poi where, along with milking cows, Joe was also shoveling shingle out of the Waiomou stream supplying it to builders and other farmers in the district.

Soon demand increased and Joe delivered the shingle by truck. Sadie had resisted driving the truck for a long time but after Joe put chains on the tyres, it didn’t take long for her to realize how easy it was to drive through streams - and she was away!

Sadie always maintained it was good to help out where she could and take care of the administration work to save a bit of money while the couple initially got their business started.” Funnily enough on that farm in Te Poi, was an old Macrocarpa tree where Joe and Sadie’s sons, David and Lewis, did an awful lot of earthmoving underneath it with their toys!

Joe and Sadie continued to expand the shingle supply business going to other rivers in the area. It was in the early 1950s they purchased the first drag line to extract shingle out of the river. This also led Joe into drainage, and later contracting. After landing a contract in Whakatane, Joe and Sadie then spent three years there with Sadie taking a job at a local jewelers. In 1955 they returned to settle in Matamata where David, Lewis and their extended families still base themselves today running one of New Zealand’s largest family owned and operated contracting businesses.

Although Sadie lived through 103 summers, she always said it would be difficult to pinpoint particular highlights throughout these years. “I’ve had so many” she said. “I am very, very lucky to have such a wonderful family” she said. “My sons have provided me with beautiful daughter-in-laws, lovely grandchildren and great grandchildren. On reflection, I truly believe if you have clean air to breathe, a good family and all of your marbles in-tact, then life is going to be great. I have lived a life with all three so must be doing alright!”

Sadie always believed it’s not the number in your life as much as the life in your number. She once said having a good family makes it easy to grow old. “Just keep an active interest and love in your friends and family, and always remember nothing is ever beyond you if you want it.” Words from a woman who has left an incredibly beautiful legacy in the lives of a family who adored her.

am Gerard is looking to achieve a milestone or two in the local twoyear-old features on Saturday.

Pam has dealt with some top-class horseflesh since shifting north from Ashburton to Matamata in October 2011 and this year, in her role as training partner with Mike Moroney, she has strong chances in both the $100,000 Matamata Breeders Stakes and the $70,000 Reid & Harrison Slipper. She’s A Thief will represent the stable in the Breeders Stakes and the colt Bocce will carry Pam and Mike’s hopes in the Slipper.

Mike has won the Breeders Stakes on two occasions and is well overdue for another victory in his hometown feature.

When in partnership with Andrew Scott, he won the 2000 Breeders with Conquistar and repeated the success three years later with Katana with both being ridden

Now 15 years later She’s A Thief has emerged as a huge hope to put Mike’s name back on the Matamata Breeders’ Stakes honours board and Pam has full confidence in the strengthening grey filly. “She’s a very talented filly and we’ve always liked her,” said Pam. “She probably deserves to have won black-type before now, but it’s just the path we’ve taken with her. Hopefully she can get it on Saturday.”

The Showcasing filly created a huge impression when winning her debut at Te Rapa last November by almost five lengths, then she won again on the same track the following month before gaining a blacktype placing when third to the exciting Melt in the Group Three Barneswood Farm Eclipse Stakes at Ellerslie on New Year’s Day. With those three runs under her belt, she headed to Ellerslie for the Karaka Million 2YO and produced a good effort for fourth to impressive local galloper Avan-

tage. “If she got out a bit earlier it could have been a different story,” said Pam. “She had a few easy days after it and has come through the race really well. She’s nominated for the Manawatu Sires Produce Stakes, but we’re not sure where we’ll go until after Saturday. There are a lot of doors open to her in Melbourne or Sydney if Mike thinks she’s the right type to take over there to his stable.”

Pam and Mike did exceptionally well to have three runners in this year’s Karaka Million and pick up a couple of placings.

Bocce finished a fine third while the other runner, Scorch, was unplaced and is now enjoying a break. “Mike bought four twoyear-olds and got three into a $1 million race so that was huge,” said Pam. “It’s been a real team effort with all the staff. I was rapt in She’s A Thief’s run and Bocce went huge. He worked the whole way and did so much in the mid-stages. He’s a colt who thrives on work and has done well since.”

The Australian-bred son of Foxwedge has looked smart from the outset. He won his debut at Otaki with the exciting Xpression third, then finished a handy fourth at Ellerslie before the Karaka Million. With two strong chances in black-type races on Saturday, Pam has a fine opportunity to almost double her stakes-winning record as a trainer. She pottered around with a horse or two in Methven when taking out a trainers’ licence in 1996 and three seasons later enjoyed her first win. But the first break for her came when she was given Narousa to pre-train then train.

Narousa won the 2002 Kumara Nuggets and was placed in the Wellington Cup (fourth) and Dunedin Gold Cup (second), then in 2003 he gave Pam her first two black-type wins when he completed the Waikato and Great Northern Hurdles double with her partner, Tommy Hazlett,

aboard. Pam enjoyed increased success training from Ashburton, taking her tally to 81 wins before she and Tommy and their family shifted to Matamata to work for Te Akau Racing Stables.

Having relinquished her trainers’ licence, Pam concentrated on her role initially as assistant trainer to Jason Bridgman, but it all changed when Chad Ormsby decided to step down from his training partnership with Mike and spend time on the rodeo circuit. “I never thought I’d go back training, but Mike approached me and I’m glad I took the job,” said Pam. “I’m very lucky. Mike is brilliant to work for and it’s working out well.”

Pam and Mike teamed up in April 2016 and their first win as a partnership came with Sororia at Te Aroha that month.

When Keep On Coming won for the stable the following August it was Pam’s 100th training success and, appropriately, it came on her birthday. Now with 13 wins this season matching the stable’s whole tally last term, Pam has 115 wins to her credit, highlighted by a couple more blacktype wins. On The Rocks won the Listed Trevor Eagle Memorial at Ellerslie on December 2 and remains in contention for the $1 million Vodafone NZ Derby (2400m) at Ellerslie on March 3, while Savile Row gave Pam her fourth and latest black-type win when taking the Listed Hallmark Stud Handicap at Ellerslie on Boxing Day. With Tommy employed as the manager of pre-training and breaking-in at Valachi Downs’ Parkvale property and Pam immersed in her role as Mike’s training partner, it’s all working out nicely for the couple, though a win by either She’s A Thief or Bocce this weekend would top it off even better.

Mum cheering on her namesake

W

ayne Hillis’s mother, Imelda, is cheering him on more than usual this season and she will be at it again when he attempts to win the local feature, the Matamata Breeders Stakes, for the first time with her namesake.

The former top jumps jockey has enjoyed his share of major success as a trainer and he would love to see his stable colours painted on the jockey statue in the Matamata birdcage in recognition of winning the Breeders Stakes. “I don’t have many two-year-olds going and I don’t think I’ve had many runners at all in the Breeders,” he said. “I can remember Dragon Maiden running in it and I saddled up another one (The Pipi Pincher) for Sabin Kirkland, but they went no good.”

Wayne also produced the unplaced Kate in the 2012 version and his best result came with Pretty Vegas finishing seventh in 2007.

This year his hopes rest with Imelda Mary, named after his mother who likes in South Auckland. “Mum is 81 and has slowed down a lot and it’s quicker for her to get around in a wheelchair these days, but she has got to see Imelda Mary race,” he said. “Obviously she didn’t get down to Wellington, but she’s been to most others.

She’s getting a kick out of watching her going round so it would be great to see her go well in the Breeders.”

Wayne bought Imelda Mary, a daughter of the ill-fated young sire Ferlax, at last year’s Festival Yearling Sale at Karaka by default. “I hadn’t planned to go to the sales, but a few of the guys were going so I jumped in the car and went with them,” he said. “I didn’t intend to buy anything and was out watching them in the back parade ring. I had a bid on a couple and missed out then I saw this filly. I bid on her and got her for $3500, then paid about the same to have her in the Karaka Million series.”

That extra payment proved well worth it when, unlike many two-year-olds, she did in fact make it to the $1 million two-yearold race at Ellerslie last month. She earned her crack at the Karaka Million with two seconds and a third in her four lead-up starts, the latter placing being on debut behind She’s A Thief, a rival in the $1 million race and again in Saturday’s Matamata Breeders Stakes. “I looked at it this way. It was like a $1 million raffle and there were only 14 tickets and we had one of them,” said Wayne. “She finished ninth and didn’t disgrace herself. She got a bit of interference and could have finished a shade closer. She still picked up $14,000 for ninth and it cost $9500 to have a go.”

Wayne races Imelda Mary with Ross Robertson, of Tauranga, and Chris Delamore (his mother’s partner) and the filly has now earned almost $19,000 – not bad for an initial $3500 purchase. Imelda Mary was an outsider in the Karaka Million and Wayne warns punters not to overlook her this weekend. “She takes a bit to get up and going but she’s got the ability,” he said.

“From an early stage I thought she’d be a better three-year-old so she’s surprised

me a bit. She’s done well since the Karaka Million and if she goes well on Saturday we’ll carry on to the (Group One) Manawatu Sires’ Produce Stakes next month.”

Imelda Mary has the breeding to suggest she could be a big player in both the Matamata Breeders Stakes and the Awapuni feature. Her grandmother is a sister to Fashions Afield, a champion Australian 2yo filly who won four races as a two-yearold including the Group 1 Sires Produce Stakes and Group 2 Reisling Slipper Trial and was runner-up in the big ones, the Golden Slipper and Champagne Stakes.

Wayne will also have the talented gallopers Livin’ On A Prayer (an impressive winner two starts ago in the $80,000 Dunstan Feeds 1500 Championship Final at Ellerslie for local part-owner and cobreeder Jim Marks) and Taupo Cup winner Nothing Trivial running on Breeders’ Stakes day, but unfortunately will be missing one of the stable’s latest stars, Bit Lippy.

After valuable stakes placings in his first three starts, Bit Lippy provided first-time owner Danielle Evans with a great result when winning the $70,000 Phoenix Park 2YO Classic at New Plymouth earlier this month and on the strength of that Group Three win, he was being prepared for Saturday’s Reid & Harrison Slipper, but suffered a major setback. “I gave him a couple of days off after New Plymouth and on that Wednesday he worked and wasn’t right,” said Wayne. “I had him x-rayed and it was found he needed a chip taken off his near front knee. He had the operation and is confined to his box for a month and will be out for about three months, maybe more.

It’s a real shame, but hopefully he’ll come back all right. I thought he’d be a big chance here and especially when he got to the 1400 metres of the Sires Produce Stakes.” Wally O’Hearn.

Special filly brings tears of joy

Getting a foot in the door

I

t was always apparent that Brad Stevens had a genuine interest in becoming a farrier – especially to his late grandad Pat, who copped a whack on the shin with a rasp after his foot had been tied up ready to be shod. In Brad’s defence however – he was only two or three years old and really didn’t know better!

Now 22, Brad inherited a passion for the equine industry from his trainer dad, Phil.

He ‘lived’ at the stables as a youngster and loved to be involved in every possible experience. “I can’t remember a time where I wanted to do anything else” says Brad.

“I’ve always loved horses but was too bloody big to be a jockey! I was however, always keen on watching the horses being shod and used to bang around with the old shoes. I was fortunate that my parents both encouraged me to follow my dreams and even when it was suggested at school that I might be better suited to a trade like building, they backed my decision.”

After approaching local farrier Grant Atkinson, Brad was over the moon to be offered an apprenticeship just a few months after initial contact. He spent the first three years under his guidance before finishing his final year with Les Dwyer. “Completing a farrier’s apprenticeship is pretty intense” says Brad. “There’s a lot more to it than I ever expected, particularly when it came to anatomy and biomechanics etc. Block courses were held annually in Wellington and boy, the last one where I had to sit my final exams was daunting – if I failed, it would mean another 12 months before I could resit. Between you and I, if I had failed, I very may well have ended up flipping burgers – it’s hard out and a long wait for a second shot! Thankfully I was well prepared and passed fairly confidently.”

Soon taking the opportunity of self-employment, Brad has absolutely no regrets and thoroughly enjoys his work. “It’s

hugely rewarding” he says, “especially when you start with a young horse and watch it progress. Every horse is individual and, whether it’s around four weekly for racing or six weekly for sport horses, you get to know them pretty well while shoeing them. Most are fairly relaxed with the whole process, although when working with a new horse or one that may be a little anxious, I do spend time ensuring they’re happy and not showing any signs of stress. There are always alternatives such as shoeing them in their box, leaving it til the next day or in extreme circumstances, gentle sedation. It’s extremely important to me to ensure my client and their horses receive consistently high standards and excellent results.

M

ac Robinson believes a touch of divine intervention has been helping Dijon Bleu toward her goal of NZ Bloodstock Filly of the Year.

“Mac the Milkman” as he is so well known around Matamata, co-bred Dijon Bleu, the country’s leading three-year-old filly, and says it’s all down to his late wife, Joy, who was tragically killed in a car accident in June 2014. Joy had so much faith in Dijon Bleu’s dam, Pristino, but she only got to see her first three foals, which she had co-bred with Mac under the Robinson Family Trust banner. Dijon Bleu was born four months after her death.

Mac, as Joy would have wished, has kept breeding from Pristino, along with fellow part-owner Craig Grammer. And he has been experiencing highlights galore through Dijon Bleu, the latest at Te Rapa this month when she was too classy in the Group Two $100,000 Cambridge Stud Sir Tristram Fillies Classic, her final appearance for the season.

It was a proud moment for Mac as he accepted the breeders’ trophy from race sponsor Sir Patrick Hogan (who stands Dijon Bleu’s sire, Burgundy) and making the occasion even more memorable was having his Melbourne-based daughter, Melissa, on hand for the big win. Melissa had also joined Mac to watch Dijon Bleu score a dominant win in her previous start, Trentham’s Group Three Desert Gold Stakes.

It was an emotional day for Mac and Melissa with the thrill of winning being mixed with some sadness. “The sad part is Joy not being here to enjoy it,” said Mac. “She would have loved it. She would been doing cartwheels!” In relaying her thoughts on Facebook, Melissa wrote of her Mum: “She would be so proud of her exceptional little filly Dijon Bleu.”

Those of us who knew Joy appreciated her love of horses and racing. Her passion was infectious and, as Mac says, she loved her role as long-time personal assistant for trainer Roger James and the racing people she met through it. “It wasn’t a job for her.

It was a passion, like going to the races on Saturday, even though she wasn’t working,” said Mac. A daughter of Ian Signal, who owned and trained the good galloper Johnny Cash, Joy raced several horses over the years with the best being Elevenses, whose major wins came in the 2000 Riccarton Group One NZ 1000 Guineas and Trentham’s 2002 Group One Captain Cook Stakes, in which she deadheated with the top-class performer Tit For Taat.

Mac has been more involved with standardbreds over the years, with one of his best investments being President Tomado (eight wins). But he, too, has experienced success at the top level in galloping, as part-owner of Pasta Post, whose eight wins from just 19 starts included the 2008 Easter Handicap at Ellerslie.

Joy fell in love with Pristino after Roger James had bought her as a yearling for $75,000 in 2008. An inoperable growth in her nose prevented Pristino going no further on the racetrack than a couple of unplaced trials. When she was offered at the 2010 Mixed Bloodstock Sale at Karaka, Joy bought her for $14,500 along with Craig, one of Roger’s clients who soon became a close friend of the Robinsons.

From her first two matings Pristino produced two winners, Readywhenyouare (two wins) and Prosecco (three wins) and since Dijon Bleu she has a colt by Shocking who was sold for $140,000 at last year’s Ready To Run sale at Karaka and last month her colt by Proisir was passed in at Karaka with a reserve of $100,000. “We bought a share in Proisir and she’s got a filly foal by him, too,” said Mac. “She’s back in foal to Burgundy and if it’s a filly we might keep her.”

Dijon Bleu was bought by Awapuni trainer Lisa Latta at the 2016 Karaka Yearling Sales for $26,000 and the “pocket battleship” has now won over $300,000 in prizemoney.

In his travels following the fortunes of Dijon Bleu, Mac has struck up a friendship with her owners and is made to feel part of the team. “The owners are a fantastic bunch to be with,” he said. “It was a big day for them at Te Rapa as they also own the two-year-old winner, Secret Allure.”

Dijon Bleu has six wins and three placings from 11 starts and all bar two of her races have been in important Listed or Group races. She has proved a marvel, being up for her first three-year-old start in mid-August when third at Taupo and still going strong six months later, right up to a well-earned holiday after the prized Te Rapa win.

She appears to have sewn up the coveted NZ Bloodstock Filly of the Year title and, if so, there will be another emotional occasion for Mac at the NZ Thoroughbred Horse of the Year Awards in September when receiving the trophy as co-breeder of the country’s best filly.

Mac knows it will be an awards’ night belonging to Joy and yes, she will be there in spirit as her legacy lives on.

A glimpse into the life of a trainer n old and wise friend once said “show me the horse and I’ll tell you about the man” and for local horse trainer Phil Stevens, it’s a quote that completely resonates.

Owner and operator of Northwood Farm, there is nothing more important to Phil and his team than the happiness, care and progression of his horses. It hasn’t been an easy road getting there, but the well respected and experienced trainer says every bit of his journey has been incredibly rewarding.

Having tried his hand at a variety of opportunities from show jumping through to becoming a fencing contractor, Phil’s passion always came back to the horses. He inherited this from his father and although there were some pretty hard times, setting and achieving goals instilled patience and determination that eventually paid off. “I applied for a job locally breaking in and pre training thoroughbreds” says Phil, “and boy, it was one heck of a learning curve. I was fortunate to learn from one of the best and almost immediately, set a goal to have my own training facility.”

As it happened it wasn’t long before a Station Road property came up for lease, (and later for sale), and even with no boxes, facilities or horses, Phil was eager to take up the opportunity. “I guess one of the best

things dad instilled was hard work and perseverance” says Phil. “I had an almost oneeyed direction to make it and, as well as working over 100 horses to save for the deposit to buy the farm, took on tractor work and even packing shelves at the supermarket. I worked basically from dusk until dawn and was extremely thankful when local renowned trainer, Jimmy Gibbs gave me my

first horse. As it turned out, now 25 years later, Jimmy is still one of my valued clients along with Pencarrow Stud, Valachi Downs, and local trainers Graham Richardson, Ken Kelso, Lance O’Sullivan and Andrew Scott.

Breaking in young horses, generally after yearling sales, Phil says most can be led in a halter and have learned basic manners.

“Once we have assessed their character or

temperament, teaching a horse takes a bit of patience, but is imperative to a good solid start” says Phil. “They can then progress to long reins and short periods on the walker.

No horse is the same and, like children, some learn quickly and others need a little more time and patience. There is no point pushing them – confidence comes with calm, consistent and very clear lessons.”

As the horse becomes comfortable with a rider, it is introduced first to an arena before training on the track begins. “I have my own regime of breaking in” says Phil, “which generally takes six to eight weeks. A period of agistment then follows before pre-training begins so they don’t forget their lessons and throughout, remain happy and confident. Successful training is extremely rewarding and I am fortunate to have Charlie, Nikita and Zane working alongside me with the same love and passion for the industry.”

Although breaking in and training is an extremely demanding choice of career with 4.10am starts seven days per week, Phil says he couldn’t imagine doing anything else. “I can honestly say if I was to win lotto, I wouldn’t change a thing. When you have such an input into the long term success of a horse – particularly a thoroughbred, there really is no better thrill or achievement.”

Heading for the BIG ones! hey say when you get as much out of celebrating others success as you do your own, you know you’re in the right place - and for five local business people, that place happens to be miles away from work!

Although management has changed for two of the five businesses involved, support for the Matamata Fishing Club’s annual Big Fish tournament has remained and it’s the one weekend each year they all make a concerted effort to head down to weigh-in hoping to celebrate the big one.

“Apart from Clarkie (Derek Clark, co-director of Plumb.Co) who tends to celebrate snaring the odd chocolate fish, we have all had the thrill and excitement of catching a marlin” laughs Challenge owner Dave Harris. “Sure for some of us, it might have been a few moons ago but you never forget that feeling of huge accomplishment as it gets hoisted up by the weighmaster.”

Obviously for most local fisho’s the lure of game fish this time of year keeps one eye on the prize but it’s also important to remember that it’s not always the biggest variety that scoops the pool. “A lot of people naturally think Marlin when it comes to a big fish Tournament” says Matamata Marine owner/operator, Ken Watkinson.

“If I remember rightly Michael Autridge won the 2016 competition with a Yellow Fin Tuna that tipped the scales at about 17 or 18kg and behind him, it was a Kingy caught by Paul Baker. Big fish can be any type and for us as sponsors, it’s just fantastic to see everyone getting out there and having a crack.”

With the only stipulation of entry being that competitors must be current financial members of Matamata Fishing Club, sponsors are encouraging all local fisho’s to get out there and have a go. “As locally owned and operated businesses we are

all very proud to get in behind the Big Fish tournament” adds Clarkey, “and obviously, are looking forward to hearing all the tall tales that come with a great weekend on the water. We’d all like to wish our locals the best of luck out there – it’d be great to see the prize pool well and truly drained!”

Caught on the goodship Leander, Hayden Begovich was stoked to hook a Striped Marlin weighing in at 98.8kg that saw him win the annual Big Fish Tournament in 2017. 37 miles north of the Mount at Alderman Rise in 1000m of water, it took just over an hour to bring in. Skippers Chris Bungard and Vaughan Mitchell described it as a bit of an acrobatic bugger but a good fight.

Connections to past generations

W

hen Stephen Viggers asked his wife, who was a keen genealogist, to do some family history research on his Great Grandfather he never imagined he would get much more than birth, marriage and death dates and hopefully a date he arrived in New Zealand.

“I was quite stunned when she came up with twenty three documented facts about William’s life and movements even through to hospital records from a road accident which gave his height, weight and hair and eye colour” said Stephen. “William John Rodgers suddenly became a real person rather than just a name.”

“Our family had always known he came from Ireland via England to New Zealand but to see a census showing all the family’s names ages and occupations and a street address in Manchester was just fantastic“ said Stephen, who then proceeded to look up the address on Google Earth to see if the house was still standing. Sadly it is now a motorway intersection.

Oral family history confirmed the exact location of his first farm at Netherton but the location of a subsequent property at Ohinewai was unable to be confirmed. The census records showed his address as Ohinewai with no road details. His grandson believed the property to be on the southern side of the road; but his grand-daughter was confident it was on the northern side of the road. “We were able to find details through PapersPast of a road accident he had later in life and a trip to National Archives actually produced all the medical reports in his medical file relating to the accident but we still had the gap of the exact farm location at Ohinewai and as a farmer myself this was something I was really keen to find out” said Stephen.

Land Information New Zealand can produce details of properties but a legal description is needed to locate which title.

They are not resourced to search the numerous titles in an area in the hope of finding the right one. With no title the trail went dead for about six months.

“Then, through Ancestry, my wife found that another of his great grandsons living in Queensland was also researching William” said Stephen. “This opened up an entire new resource because he had the oral history and family papers from his grandfather and I had access to my grandfather’s oral history and photos and papers” said Stephen. “It was interesting to hear the common oral history and swap different photos and documents. One of the things the cousin in Australia was also stuck on was the location of the farm at Ohinewai as he said he only had the legal descriptions from the sale and purchase agreement in his grandfathers papers!

“Eureka we were in business! This was the one item we needed to locate the property ” said Stephen. A quick trip to Lands Information the next day was planned and within minutes of providing the legal descriptions to what turned out to be 13 separate titles, the Viggers had a map in front of them of the exact locations of the properties. “Having travelled the road many times when going north I immediately could visualise the property and both his grandson and granddaughter were right about which side of the road it was on, as it was on both sides!” said Stephen.

“The next generation settled in Te Aroha and Matamata but now, when I travel through either Netherton or Ohinewai, I feel a real connection to the life of my great grandfather and the trials and tribulations he would have met in his farming life” said Stephen.

our local women have established the Kate Diprose Fundraising Team in a bid to help their friend Jackie and her husband Marc cope with some of the necessary costs associated with treatment for their bubbly little 10 year old.

Kate was originally diagnosed will ALL (Acute lymphoblastic leukaemia) when she was three. She underwent two and a half years of chemotherapy treatment which left her clear of cancer for 14 months. Sadly just before her seventh birthday, Kate relapsed and had to undergo another two and a half years of chemotherapy treatment.

This was completed in November 2017. Unfortunately Kate’s remission was short lived and she has relapsed again and now requires a bone marrow transplant. Kate will be in Starship Children’s Hospital in Auckland for the next six to nine months

Mum and I also attended bi-weekly training sessions at Argos Gymnasium in Tauranga which surprisingly quickly, restored my ability in beam and bar work. I guess I had underestimated the power of muscle memory and even though I wasn’t quite as confident as I may have been as a teenager, my technique and ability did seem to return – I guess your body really doesn’t forget!

sible, Rochelle headed to Dunedin early in February with her sons and parents. “I didn’t put too much pressure on myself” she says. “I just wanted to complete my routines and be happy with my performance. I actually already felt like I had won just regaining enough skill to be there!”

As it happened after two floor, one bar and a beam routine, Rochelle was absolutely stunned, excited and even a bit emotional to take out the first overall position!

“It was almost surreal” she says. “Everything had come together and even my nervousness seemed to help me focus and remain positive. It was an incredible moment, especially to have my boys there with me and of course, my mum and dad. I really couldn’t have done it without their support – mum especially, was my “plus one equals two” person and fully deserved to share in my achievement.”

hen she saw a photo of a lady that used to coach her, memories of flick flacking, flipping and flying around the mat came flooding back for local woman, Rochelle Richardson. It was a bit of a “eureka” moment and immediately, goals and aspirations of a fearless 14 year old competitive gymnast resurfaced.

“At that moment - even though I have the body of a 41 year old, I had the mind of a 14 year old” laughs Rochelle, “and I just couldn’t shake that feeling of wanting to get back into it - and I guess, prove to myself I still could!”

At first I expect, my mum Janice (Howland) may have thought I was completely mad, but with all her years as my number one coach and supporter, I wouldn’t have even considered getting back into competitive gymnastics without her. After all, it had been over quarter of a century since I last competed and I needed that ‘you can do

Typical is “Upstage”, to upstage someone is to overshadow, displace, or go one better than them. The term actually comes from an actors trick to make another actor turn his back to the audience and thus become less noticable than themselves. The

actor positions his-self further back on the stage than the person they are talking to so that actor has to turn their back on the audience to face them and reply. This is called upstaging because the stage is raked, that is angled to be higher at the back than the front to give the audience a better view, so the actor playing the trick is up the stage or further back up the slope.

Restoring Rapurapu… can you help? ou will remember in late January reading about the efforts Rapurapu Reserve Committee are going to hoping to restore the area to its former glory. A working bee has been planned for Saturday March 17 and your help would be appreciated!

“We had contact from interested community members after our story was published” says Nick Evans, “and if they, or any other community members would now like to jump in and give us a hand at the working bee, we’d really appreciate it. Many hands make light work as they say and although it’s all voluntary, we’re looking at putting on a bit of a BBQ afterwards to reward everyone’s efforts.”
