wo Matamata College students were absolutely over the moon at a recent school assembly thanks to the generosity of local businesses Stanley Group and Matamata Veterinary Services.

For around 12 years the two companies have proudly rewarded excellence at the school by donating significant prizes in the ACE (Achieving and Celebrating Excellence) Club draws.

Every student that achieves excellence in three or more subjects automatically gets an entry and with 977 senior and 1135 junior entries, respective company representatives Craig Davison and Lisa Burch commended the students on their consistent efforts. “We are very proud to be involved in such an initiative” says Craig, “and it’s great to see such a significant number of students making the prize draw list.”

The mystery of the old school bell lthough it was dusty and a little dirty, the original Matamata College school bell has been retrieved from the depths of an old storage shed and the Centenary committee couldn’t be happier. “It’s really quite special that the bell has been found and we can utilise it with our weekend of 100 year celebrations” says Lynne Jobe. “We would be thrilled to hear from anyone that has any information about the bell, or early photographs, anecdotes or memories etc.” Although they’re yet to decide what to do with it after the centenary, the committee would also be interested in hearing from anyone that might be keen to restore it to its former glory or has any ideas of appropriate long term placement. Hobbiton supporting local emergency services hether it was hairy feet or happy hobbits locals were hoping to see, their travels recently were of huge help to two of our communities most essential services.

“It’s great to give our locals the opportunity to take a tour of Hobbiton Movie Set, see what it’s all about and hopefully come away feeling proud to have such an iconic piece of Middle-Earth in our community” says Russell Alexander. “By charging just $10 which is then donated to local charities, it’s a great way for us to share the facility but also support our town together.”

With “an awful lot of time and planning” Russell offers his appreciation to Sue Whiting and the Matamata Public Relations As-

sociation who not only coordinated bookings and arrangements, but also very generously donated all ticketing commissions to the charities of choice.

“In contrast to previous years where we choose the recipient, we gave our guests the opportunity to vote for organisations that would benefit from proceeds of the charity event” says Russell. “We were delighted that Matamata St John and Matamata Volunteer Fire Brigade were this year’s respective recipients and thrilled to help support such crucial services.”

Representing St John Matamata, Area Committee Chair Ian Manton and Station Manager, Lisa Newman not only acknowledged those who voted for their organisa-

tion, but explained what a significant help the $3,250 was – particularly as they are currently fundraising for the purchase of specialised mannequins that will provide exceptional training opportunities. “Technological advancements mean instant feedback is provided with various procedures and techniques taught using the mannequins” says Lisa. “They will be invaluable for individual and group training within St John but also with other first responder training such as our fire fighters” she says. “We are very, very grateful for such a significant donation.”

Also extremely grateful, was Chief Fire Officer, Kevin Curtis, on behalf of Matamata Volunteer Fire Brigade. The second Hobbiton Movie Set tour saw the brigade win the vote of guests with an eventual donation of $8,280.

“There are a lot of things that wouldn’t happen without the specialised gear and equipment Matamata has obtained” says Kevin. “The New Zealand Fire Service obviously funds the essentials but, as a community volunteer based station, we are extremely fortunate to have continued support which enables the purchase of further resources. Recently, it was students of Matamata College that joined Matamata Lions for the 2017 Fertilizer Drive and as a result of their efforts, they were thrilled this week to receive $6,000 from the local service group.

“We were delighted to present the proceeds to two Matamata College groups who will be experiencing some great international opportunities” said Garry. “The Maori Cultural group are heading to Rarotonga next month - capping off an exceptional year, where I believe, they have continually performed above expectation.”

Starting in London and heading on to Paris, Rome and Hong Kong, the experience will be an excellent opportunity to see timeless architecture, art galleries, product design and film production. “Many of our seniors are passionate about art history and architecture” says their teacher, Jolene Rogerson. “Some of the timeless masterpieces by Michelangelo or Rodin, the Mona Lisa and Picasso for example, are things we have talked about in class, but to see them first hand will be absolutely fascinating, and something these students will never forget.”

Working extremely hard to raise funds for their respective trips, students passed on their appreciation to Garry and Project Chairman John Bonenkamp acknowledging the awesome support from Lions. “To

be working alongside these guys bagging up the fertilizer for a couple of evenings, then selling it around town to the locals was a lot of fun” says Caleb Schwabauer.

“They were genuinely interested in what we are aiming for and to give up their own time to help us achieve it is incredibly generous. We’re going to be really proud to come back and share the experience with them at one of their meetings following our return.”

Senior boys get crafty for reunion reparing to welcome hundreds of visitors to school in March 2018, the Matamata College Centenary Reunion committee had an idea planter boxes might brighten up the main entrance and provide a spectacular show of colour on arrival.

“Investigating the most cost effective options, we had a discussion with technology teacher Ben Allen” says committee member Lynne Jobe. “We were looking at six rectangular planter boxes that could be potted with bright flowers in school colours and placed outside the library, main entrance and staff room. We were absolutely delighted with Ben’s enthusiasm and, with the assistance of his senior students, more than thrilled with the end result.”

After looking at the committee’s ideas, Ben along with senior students Reinhardt Morkel and Harrison Fountain, designed and constructed the boxes using decking

timber and treated ply. They took the brief one step further however, and using the recently acquired computer numeric cutting machine, created wooden plaques incorporating both the school and centenary logos that would be fixed to the front of the planters. “It was a really neat project to be involved in” says Reinhardt. “As year 12 students, both Harrison and I are returning to school next year so will be helping out at various reunion activities as needed.

We’ll be proud to see the boxes all planted up knowing we had a hand in creating them.”

In preparation for planting the completed boxes, Lynne also offers huge thanks to the woman she describes as incredibly green fingered! “Anne-Marie Lucie-Smith has raised nearly 2,000 plants from seed and once they’ve been thinned out, planted and get established, are going to make an incredible show” says Lynne.

“Anne-Marie has worked so hard and we really appreciate her! We’d also like to offer huge appreciation to Dalton’s who have supplied all the seed raising and potting mix required for this project.”

Two conductors for choir atamata Christmas choir will be conducted by two conductors in their annual concerts this year, due to David Qualrough having health problems.

Clare Hitchcock has been involved with the Christmas choir for over 20 years, in fact attending them for most of her life. She still has vivid memories of guest artists who sang or played at those concerts when she was a child. In the past she has helped train the choir leading up to concerts, and has shared conducting roles occasionally.

Clare has also been part of the music ensemble accompanying the choir. She has spent many years as a music teacher at Matamata Primary and Matamata Intermediate Schools. Clare has trained many of the children’s choirs or instru-

mental groups that have been guests at these concerts. This year Clare looks forward to the challenge of sharing the conductor’s role with Dave Brookes, commenting that it has been a lot of fun working with the enthusiastic singers who form the choir.

David Brookes, a relative newcomer to the district, has been involved in both church and community music for many years in New Zealand and England. He conducted combined choirs in the local Schools Music Festival in Putaruru in 1967-69, and was Music Director for the Putaruru Operatic Society production of Salad Days, The Boyfriend, and a chamber choir for a Christmas Tableaux during that time. During his time as chapel organist at Dilworth School, Auckland he directed the

Royal School of Church Music annual Junior Choirs Training weekends for ten years, each concluding with a festival service of music. David has recently reformed a choir at All Saints Church, Matamata. David is looking forward to conducting some rousing carols from Matamata Christmas Choir and audience during the concerts, and providing organ music and accompaniment. The concerts will also include guest artists Jeri Rose and Jenny Landman who will sing duets. St Joseph’s school choir will present two arrangements of carols, conducted by Yvonne Marshall. A student from Firth Primary School will present a secular reading at each concert on the theme of Christmas.

Who is to be master?

By Father Leonard Danvers, Holy Angels Matamata In the midst of a discussion on the meaning of words in Through the looking glass, Humpty Dumpty says “The question is, which is to be master – that’s all.” Humpty Dumpty claimed that words meant what he chose them to mean because he was their master. Whether Humpty was right about words and Lewis Carroll was satisfying many an academic argument about language and meaning, there is a great truth at the heart of our lives. The question is, who is to be master?

We may not be comfortable today with the idea of having a master but there is always something which governs our choices and actions – none of us acts without reason. Most often it is our desires, what we seek, that

decides what governs us and controls our actions.

Ao a question I have to ask myself is “what rules my life?” Do I desire physical pleasure and are most of my actions ordered towards getting it – then there is my master. Do I value and desire most of all physical possessions, gadgets and the like? Well there is my master.

The problem with all of these masters is that they are much too limited in what they give us for our service. As Jesus says; Life is more than food and drink and clothing (Luke 12:23).

These are all good things – we need them, but we need more than them. If they are our masters we will probably get them but they are all we get, and we swiftly discover its not

enough. We may then seek more of them – a vast quantity even, but 20 cupboards full of shoes will not, in the end, fulfil us.

We are limited mortal beings living in a limited physical world yet, at our core, is the amazing fact that we are made in the image and likeness of God who transcends all these things. So it is no surprise that no quantity of these things can possibly satisfy us. We can only be fulfilled by something which transcends both them and us. So we can see the truth of St Augustine’s great profession: “Our hearts are restless Lord until they rest in you.” If God is the only thing that will truly fulfil us then he is what we must seek. He must be our master because nothing else will do.

fter learning a foreign language each week for almost a year, seven Matamata Intermediate students had the opportunity to put their skill to test recently heading to Noumea for a seven day adventure - somewhat out of their comfort zone!

“Learning a language is part of providing enriching experiences for our young people” says Matamata Intermediate School Language and International Opportunities leader, Robyn Wilson. “These students have shown outstanding commitment, focusing particularly on introductory French with everyday phrase fluency. We first introduced the Noumea opportunity in 2016

and it was such a fantastic extension to learning for the students, we were pleased to successfully coordinate a second trip.”

With decreasing amounts of nickel, the main source of industry in Noumea, there has been an increased focus on tourism which, says Robyn, “provides exceptional service and care for visitors. “The people are so welcoming and fully support our various challenges and activities planned with our students which, at times, must be challenging” she laughs! “As part of the Waikato Combined School’s trip, we had around 30 students from Matamata, Morrinsville, Barclay Normal and Maeroa Intermediate take part and if you can

imagine them all lining up and – in their best French, asking for their ice-cream of choice, a bus ticket to a particular destination or even grocery items at the supermarket, you can probably understand comprehension wouldn’t always be easy!”

As well as speaking in French wherever possible, reading timetables, navigating maps and planning, shopping and preparing a three course dinner from their hotel rooms, students also took in many of the beautiful sights in Noumea and surrounding islands. Along with snorkelling and swimming in incredibly clear blue water, they swam with turtles after a boat cruise

ith his wife Rachel growing up in Matamata, Robert Gregory didn’t have much choice but to relocate and, as it happens, it has been an extremely positive decision.

“As a qualified builder originally from Whitianga, I was fortunate to secure work immediately” says Robert, “so as well as joining a great team, I quickly got to know many of the local tradies and suppliers. It was great to become part of a community which is so supportive of each other and right from the start, I really have felt quite at home.”

After working for Begovich Builders for a few years, a significant opportunity came up for Robert that he felt was too good to pass up. He discussed it with his employer and with no hard feelings, decided the time was right to

take the leap into self-employment. “The project – a significant renovation, was an incredible opportunity to put everything I love about building into practice” says Robert. “It was a large house at Lake Tarawera built with Douglas fir timber throughout, exposed beams and beautiful natural features, which was the kind of challenge we were ready to tackle. The initial project then grew to include a full re-clad with added extras. This gave the existing home a stunning new lease on life, and once completed, was something I will always be very proud of.”

Following the Tarawera renovation, Robert soon began his next challenge – also a large extension of a beach property – this time on the waterfront in Papamoa. The Matamata owners

to Amedee Island, enjoyed Halloween festivities in the village, took in the history and culture of the people and even saw bugs as big as your hand! “We all had the most amazing time” says Robyn. “The kids were incredibly supportive of each other and worked so well as a group - I was very proud of them especially given that at just 12 years old, they were so enthusiastic about taking in every opportunity presented to them. I have absolutely no doubt they all returned home with a new appreciation of what’s beyond their own backyard.”

He can also offer suggestions where maximising space and efficiency is required and once you’ve ticked the boxes, organise the entire project leaving you to enjoy the best kind of R&R – rest and relaxation!

November fishing better than average! lthough typically we should expect ok weather this time of year, there would be few that could argue October and November have been nothing short of wet and miserable. Conditions weren’t completely hideous last weekend although many reported swells and pretty rough conditions on the water overall.

Having said that however, for many members the November competition at Matamata Fishing Club was well worth the effort. A total of 83 anglers weighed in 367 fish averaging 1.573kg. Keen fishermen Leyland Mangi and Vincent Alloway brought home more than an entrée of trout for the November Matamata Fishing Club competition. They were fishing “all over the place” from Awapuni to a pretty decent puddle in Tok!

Grinners are winners! Murray Morris and Robbie Reid might have been battling but it was certainly worth the effort. Fishing up north at Hohora, the pair were pretty stoked to take out some of the top spots including 1st heaviest snapper, catch of the month and landbase saltwater for Robbie and 2nd heaviest for Murray. The snapper weighed 8.640kg and 7.400kg respectively.

“None of us expect to be in a situation where we cant afford to feed our families” she says, “but on occasion, situations arise that are simply beyond our control such as redundancy, illness or - as another example, major house or car repairs. It can be very difficult to recover from unexpected financial pressure which is why our service is such an essential part of our community.”

“Over the years we have had some really wonderful community members donate gifts for girls and boys, teenagers and parents or caregivers” says Raewyn. “Most people appreciate that even in the toughest of times it’s nice to have something to unwrap on Christmas morning and its lovely that they think of those less fortunate. I have already had enquiries from people about donating for this Christmas so, should you like to, we would really appreciate these gifts from now on. If you

Extremely grateful for all donations received, Raewyn says, particularly with the end of the year approaching, a real need for non-perishable food items continues.

“2017 has been a difficult year for many” she says, “and it is often accentuated during significant holiday periods. If anyone can spare a couple of tins, a bag of flour or sugar, or even cleaning and personal hygiene products it will always be appreciated.”

As well as donations of non perishable food and other items, monetary donations are also very welcome and hugely appreciated. When an emergency food parcel is packed there is often the need to purchase necessary staple items such as milk, vegetables or fruit that doesn’t have a very long shelf life. “Matamata Foodbank is a not for profit organization that simply couldn’t continue without the generous support of our community” says Raewyn, “and I assure you, we operate in the most cost effective and efficient way possible.

The items we include in a food parcel are essential food items with an emphasis on good family nutrition and wholesome food that will see the family through a tough time.”

Theatrical Thinking

hey’re off and the end of year productions have started hitting the boards, in fact two of them have already finished. “Arsenic and Old lace” at Matamata Dramatic Society was a superb production, I was lucky enough to make it to the final night on the day I returned from an overseas trip to Thailand and Cambodia.

With an excellent single set and a large cast, all of whom were perfect in their parts, this was a play not to miss.

An older play, and a bit wordy, it’s hard to pick any one of the cast for praise they were all so good. But I did like the crazy brother Teddy who thought he

was Teddy Roosevelt, definitely the plum part.

Sadly, being overseas, I missed Te Aroha’s “Remain in Light” but I am told it too was an excellent production.

Matamata Musical Theatre’s “Rome Sweet Rome” is like a traditional Christmas pantomime but set in Rome. Again with a simple but excellent set and costumes, and a cast who play it up to the hilt, this Roman romp is just what you need for a fun night out before Christmas.

The whole cast do an excellent job camping it up as Gladiators, Temple Maidens, soothsayers, cupid, and

Boadicea with her tribeswomen, not to mention a newsreader to keep you up to date on the plot. The dinner was pretty good too.

Fishing Report

mixed bag over the weekend weather wise but if you got out and about on Sunday it was very pleasant. Last week we had a significant drop of rain that saw our rivers and streams rise and become a bit discoloured. This has now settled down and they are very fishable. The forecast all this week looks excellent to get out after work and wet a line or two, take the kids or grandkids out, it’s very rewarding.

In the Taupo region it was a blowy old weekend most of the time. This week however, looks very settled and I would consider it well worth a venture down there.

Local trout gurus Bernie and Colleen Montague have left a few in the lake for you after being down there on the last Matamata Fishing Club comp. They got some nice fish on the troll. Bernie tells us getting on the water early is the ticket, and he would know!

In the Rotorua area there has been some nice fish caught in the Ohau Channel. Local trout guide and expert Glen Skinner tells me the lakes are also producing some nice fish at the change of light in the morning with harling gear. Glen also comments that the jigging is just starting to perform quite well on Rotoiti. On the salt water the spring fever season continues in earnest.

If you get a chance to head out west this spring, don’t miss it. Dwayde Pinny who runs charter boats off Kawhia has been having a ball lately. On many occasions returning to port by lunchtime with the crews chilly bins bulging with big snapper.

Dwayde has been fishing mainly slightly north of Kawhia harbour entrance and in about 55 to 58m of water.

Up to the Coromandel and it’s a similar story. Many crews have fished their limits within two or three hours of hitting the water. Last weekend our very own Lippy and her friends ventured out with Eric Carter. Leaving the Waikaau boat ramp

www.sceneonline.co.nz they were back at port two hours later with limit bags. Her son Dylan taking out the heaviest snapper caught by a junior at the Matamata Fishing Club comp. Darryll, who skippers the Snapper Safaris boat, tells me his crews are catching more and more double figured fish - the best one in the past week being 16lb. Very nice ah!

Over the ranges to the Mercury Bay area and my man on the water, John Ellwood skipper of The Whai, tells me the soft bait fishing behind the commercial scallop boats has been exceptional. They are dredging along outside of the black jacks just around the corner from Opito Bay. John says wait until they turn to pick up and cast in where they leave a wash behind them.

Over in the Bay of Plenty there has been some nice kingis caught around the Alderman’s. Glen Clothier cleaned up at last weekend’s comp with a few beauties. Out around Mayor and Motiti it’s still a bit patchy. Local snapper guru Graham “the butcher on Firth” Hornsey got the best one from the island at 14lb. It would be fair to say the rest of the boats struggled a bit. We got a reasonable bin in the end but mostly after the change of light.

Congratulations to all the fishos at last weekend’s Matamata Fishing Club comp. A great event was had with about 200 in attendance. The really cool thing was that about 40 were kids – good to see the family side of the club thriving. We had a huge amount of sponsors, the major one J Swap Contractor’s, many thanks to you all. I must say congratulations to Robbie Reid for catching his first snapper over 20lb. It was caught off the rocks in the far north under the guidance of Muzza Morris – nice work guys.
