Local couple, Norm and Dawn Dobson’s son and daughter-in-law are currently travelling and came across Mata Mata, a border crossing at Nambia. It boasts a comfortable resting camp for tired travellers and is situated on the banks of the Auob River on the western boundary of the Kgalagadi Transfrontier Park. The camp borders Namibia and is surrounded by thorny Kalahari dune bushveld. Giraffe, typically adapted to these arid conditions, are a favourite sight around Mata Mata Restcamp. Isn’t that interesting!

Will girl power sort the spuds from the duds? hen it comes to growing spuds, Caroline Keyte is giving away few secrets – but there can be little doubt she’ll be out to protect her title come March 2018!

Winning the 2016 10th annual Rotary Matamata Spud in a Bucket competition with a monstrous 7.65kg in her bucket, Caroline was just 0.03kg off breaking the competition record held by Sally Jenkins.

Her only comment when asked the secret to her success at last year’s prize giving, was “sheep poo and lots of it!”

Caroline’s efforts topped a very successful competition for the girl power brigade – with perennial achiever Tina Troughton (Matamata Kiwanis Club) coming in second (4.85kg) and Westpac Bank branch manager Miranda Thomson finishing fourth with 3.55kg. The annual fundraiser pits growers from Rotary, Lions, Kiwanis and a number of local businesses against each other for the bragging rights of being Matamata’s champion Spud in a Bucket grower. There is also a section for junior growers (15 and under) which becomes more popular each year and another part of the competition that Rotary is keen to grow.

When the underdogs master the tango f there was one sure way to test the strength of a relationship, some might suggest four weeks out from a wedding might not be the best option! For local couple Hamuera (Humz) Brooky and Gabrielle Gifford however, whatever doesn’t kill you definitely makes you stronger!

As past personal trainers at Fitzone the two are committed to results and that’s not just for their clients. They continually challenge themselves and with the CrossFit phenomenon that uses your own body weight for resistance revolutionising high-intensity interval training, the couple decided they’d like to give competition a crack and see how they went. “We were keen on entering the beginner’s class of Two 2 Tango” says Gabrielle. “This is the only annual CrossFit competition that covers all divisions with male and female couples in New Zealand so, regardless of how we got on, we thought it would be a great opportunity to take part and at the same time, see some of the best athletes in action across the different levels.”

With twice daily training and “martyr fitness guru” Nicole Bradley’s six week challenge under their belt, Humz and Gabrielle headed to the North Shore Events Centre where with 326 teams taking part, they were a little overwhelmed to find there were 83 teams competing in the beginner’s category! “Although we were as physically fit and as mentally prepared as we could have been, we definitely felt a bit like the underdogs” laughs Gabrielle. “We were one of about three couples in the entire competition that didn’t have all the professional CrossFit affiliation gear and with no CrossFit training facilities available in Matamata, our prep really was doing the best we could with what we had! We weren’t about to let that intimidate us though and with six workouts to smash over the two day competition, were ecstatic to finish our first in 8th place with both of us surpassing previous personal bests with our power lifts.”

Continuing through the remaining workout heats, Humz and Gabrielle had set the goal to finish in the top 10 and although the second to last event on the second day had competitors leaving the mat in tears due to the sheer physical demand on their bodies, they had entered for a reason and were not about to quit! “It was beyond hard” says Gabrielle, “and even though we felt our combined strength was optimal, we really had to just dig it in and get through. All CrossFit events are reliant on dual synchronicity and neither of us wanted to let the other down.

At that point we really had no idea where we were sitting compared to the other teams – honestly, all we could do was focus on finishing!”

With the final event, the partner run, offering a bit of relief and fun as the two took turns at carrying the other, finishing the competition really was all the reward they needed. “We had had an incredibly neat weekend” says Gabrielle, “with our wonderful Auntie Marg (and her partner Craig) spoiling us with her masseuse skills, nutritious meals and even coming down to support us - so, when it came to prize giving, we already felt like winners! To then get back there and hear our name called to the podium as overall class winners was surreal. We actually laughed when the organisers said “Well, I don’t know where they’re from but the winners are Hamuera Brooky and Gabrielle Gifford! They might not have known this year, but if Humz and I have anything to do with it, they’ll certainly remember us next year – we fully intend getting back there, stepping up a class and defending our title!”

With such an incredible achievement now done and dusted, the couple celebrate their wedding this coming weekend and we wish them all the very best for their future together, congratulations!

Richard’s family trust second only to one lmost 50 years ago a young man’s eyes were opened to the world of theatre and although these days, it might not be with quite such youthful vigour, the passion that developed has never waned.

As well as being a regular performer, Richard Prevett developed a love of writing and is well known for a variety of successful scripts including of course, Financial Affairs, the Matamata Dramatic Society’s 50th anniversary production.

Two further works, Peculiar Reasons and Vintage Cloudy Bay were presented at consecutive Festivals of New Zealand theatre in Hamilton, directed by Simon Coleman.

Richard was also responsible for introducing the Ten Minute play competition to Matamata around eight years ago which, as an added bonus, continues to attract new members to theatre. “Held every two years, this has been an extremely successful platform for creativity” he says, “and we’ve seen an extremely diverse range of works which is fantastic as far as live theatre longevity.”

Having taken the opportunity to enter the Playwrights Association of New Zealand (PANZ) Long Play competition this year, Richard wrote Family Trust which he explains, takes a light hearted approach to telling a story about a family in crisis. “Family conflict, especially where money is involved is all too prevalent” says Richard. “In modern society behaviour involving new partners, blended families and middle-class wealth, there can be challenging inheritance issues so taking a lighter approach was very enjoyable.”

was humbled by adjudicator, Dave Armstrong’s comments – particularly given the calibre of competition alongside him. “I was very pleased for *Robert Gilbert” says Richard. “He has quite a list of national and international accolades including having twice made the longlist for the British Theatre Challenge, and a previous honourable mention in the New Works of Merit playwriting competition in New York. His play, dedicated to the families of the 185 people who died in the 2011 Christchurch earthquake, was described as an unflinching story about crime, family and sacrifice. It displays, in bucket-loads, human compassion and the difficulty of everyday life that families in New Zealand today can face.”

In contrast, Dave wrote of Family Trust, “This comedy made me laugh and looks entirely possible to stage. The playwright is thinking in “three dimensions”. Family Trust has funny crisp dialogue, some nice visual action and potential for great costumes. It gives the actors a lot of scope for having fun and it is very well structured.”

Confirmed to take the stage at Matamata Dramatic Society in 2018 Family Trust will be directed by Hilton Woodroofe and promises to provide outstanding entertainment. In the meantime however, Richard is looking forward to a cameo role in the upcoming Arsenic & Old Lace that opens on October 28. Local scouts back in action fter two years of recession Matamata Scouts are celebrating a comeback with an influx of kids, a couple of great new leaders and some awesome fun and games ahead!

“It was difficult to find a new leader plus a lack of numbers that led to the temporary suspension” says Group Leader, Rob Donderwinkel, “but this year as it happens, we have a good number of Cubs graduating and ready to step up to the next level. With this, we have been really fortunate to have had Barry Allison, Glen Ashford and Ellen Ganley appointed as Scout leaders which is fantastic. All three have an interest in the outdoors and are excited about ensuring our new recruits have the opportunity through teamwork, to achieve everything they could hope for individually.”

With an emphasis on encouraging decision making, team building and understanding each other, the focus on nature will ensure Scout evenings will work on developing the all-important outdoor skills that underpin the global Scouting movement. “Getting outdoors is what it will be all about” says Rob. “There’ll be lots fun and games, and we have all kinds of ideas pencilled in that includes everything from camping to raft racing, and bush skills to mud slides. Obviously there are restrictions depending on volunteer assistance for example, but we would also like to encourage attendance to zonal or summer and winter Scout camps, and experiences that are going to really empower our kids. This a great age to explore challenges in safe and controlled environments with minimised risk – but at the same time, extend those comfort zones and try new things. We’re all really excited about the new opportunities ahead.”

Given the late start to 2017 and with just one school term remaining, the new Scout group will be presented with the challenge of designing and creating a float for the December Christmas parade. “It’s a neat way to get the kids reintroduced and working as a team to create something spectacular” says Rob. “They basically have a blank canvas and it’s going to be great to see what they can come up with. Obviously with the Scouting theme, there are endless ideas that can be incorporated but most importantly, it’s an opportunity to share ideas and get busy!

ocal teenager Keely Frearson has returned home – albeit briefly, after taking part in an international experience of a lifetime.

Along with the DeVisu dance crew representing Urban Dance Youth Trust, Keely recently travelled to Glascow, Scotland to compete in the finals of the UDO World Street Dance championships. With 6,000 dancers representing 42 nations, the New Zealand team was ecstatic to place third in the preliminary section of the competition, having competed with 100% commitment, passion and huge pride on the world stage.

"These competitions are not just about winning titles, but giving our dancers a huge confidence and morale boost” says Urban Dance Creative Director, Sarah Martin.

“The exposure to international choreographers and talent scouts definitely open doors for them which can really kick start incredibly successful careers."

While in Germany, De Visu members attended a training camp along with around 2200 students from all over the world, and many top international choreographers. They also spent time training with arguably America's best dance crew ‘The Kinjaz’ in Los Angeles, complete with a private Q & A session.

“It’s hard to put into words just how incredible this experience was” says Keely. “I have gained so much confidence in the way I can move and interpret music and the trip has definitely cemented that fact that I love everything about dancing – it is what I need to do! I can feel myself

getting better and better and although I still have so much to learn, I am focused on succeeding and making my family, my town and my country proud. This is not the end – it’s just the beginning.”

Since arriving back Keely has been given a huge opportunity to dance in an upcoming show in Auckland with an international choreographer/ dancer, Mecnan Giasar, who saw her dance at the Germany Urban Dance competition. Grounded – Battle of the Arts, is an invitation only competition which features New Zealand’s finest dance creators and poets in both adult (pro) and youth (next generation) divisions. It is a “one-of-a-kind spectacle in the world of performing arts – an ‘all styles’ dance competition, spoken word competition and theatre show all combined into one.

“My short term goal is to pass my NCEA, and make the most of any dance and choreography opportunities as they come” says Keely. “I have been chosen as a character in the Urban Dance end of year show so I have to choreograph my own part in this which is exciting as choreography is of great interest to me. I have my final year at Matamata College next year but following that, I aim to be travelling overseas to dance intensives, grow my skillset and with any luck, make the podium at the next World Street Dance competition!”

Wax on, wax off Nathan Gann, Pastor Matamata Baptist Church One tradition I remember for Halloween growing up in the US – other than wanting to dress up like the Karate Kid every year, was watching the cartoon, It’s the Great Pumpkin, Charlie Brown. It illustrates some brilliant ideas on faith, doubt, and disappointment.

The whole Peanuts Gang is in the movie, but the story focuses on Linus. He wants to see the “Great Pumpkin” rising from the pumpkin patch in town, but his friends mock him. Isn’t it admirable to see someone with principles in the face of adversity? As he says to Charlie Brown, “Next year, I’ll find a pumpkin

patch that is real sincere!’”

We could view Linus’ faith as naïve, but I think the creator Charles Schulz said something insightful. He said, “You can”t create humour out of happiness. I”m astonished at the number of people who write to me saying, “Why can”t you create happy stories for us? Why does Charlie Brown always have to lose? Why can't you let him kick the football?' Well, there is nothing funny about the person who gets to kick the football.”

Often we encounter disappointment, and unfortunately sincerity and honesty are not always rewarded. And yet hon-

esty, grit, and persistence in the midst of adversity are the very qualities we should teach our children. Halloween, a time to emulate super heroes, and yet our personal heroes are those without masks who can be themselves no matter what.

And just a heads up if you have children!

Check out the Light Party at Matamata Baptist Church from 5-7pm on 31 October. Our theme is “Movie Characters,” and there will be lots of games, candy, and fun for the whole family. I’ll be there with a couple of awesome prizes for any kids dressed like the Karate Kid!

The other local racer, Colin Meredith alias “old man racing” went to Raglan with no great expectations. Colin races a class 1 off roader (rear engine buggy). This is sometimes referred to as the “open class” as it has no engine restrictions, but must be two wheel drive.

To Colin’s surprise he found himself contesting second place for the day, but a thrown supercharger belt in the fourth race meant no points there and no podium on the day. However he goes to the National in Neslon in third position in Class 1.

wo local racers competed in the North Island Short Course Off Road racing championships recently. The event was organised by Waikato Off Road Racing Club at one of its tracks at Te Mata, Raglan and, sponsored by Dalton’s, J Swap Contractor’s Ltd, Mimico, On Site Auto Electrical and Repco, is known as the Dalton’s National final.

Conditions for racing on Saturday were perfect, no dust – no mud. Racing was in respective classes at five laps per race with accumulated points. Dion Edgecombe’s class, known as U class (a racing version of farm SXS utility vehicles), is very fiercely contested at the top end. These vehicles are very nimble and deceptively fast and receive a huge amount of preparation to make them “racing fit.”

The old and the new with Matamata Lions

ecently at Lions Matamata we had a rare occurrence, unique in any organisation, where we had Neil Algar - a Charter Member of 59 years service, induct our newest member Kym Bolton-Hampton. Two people completely different in their own right, having one common goal - to serve the community.

Kym moved to Matamata when she was five years old.

Schooled here, married here, raised her children here.

She is currently working at Matamata College, running the Gateway programme, as well as supporting students with careers decisions to transition them into their next phase of their lives beyond school. Also she is involved in Playcentre. This organisation supports parents in being the best they can and with their children, blending an adult learning and early childhood learning experience.

Kym is a life member of Te Poi Playcentre. She has another passion with theatre. She enjoys entertaining people, as well as being part of a team assisting with confidence building, skills building, to be creative, working with others members, aiding their sense of self. “Directing is particularly fulfilling and I always have much pride in the efforts of the actors as they create an audience-ready performance” she says.

So why did I join Lions? I have a belief that individuals have the opportunity to raise social capital in their communities simply by being involved in organisations that

support local groups, events and people. Lions is a service club that looks to benefit their own community first and they do this through providing funding for local causes as well as providing the man (woman) power to support community members and groups to achieve their goals. It is the sense of "doing good in your own backyard" that has drawn me to Lions and to be able to see the tangible results of Lions involvement is really rewarding. In the words of Mother Teresa "Never worry about numbers. Help one person at a time and always start with the one nearest to you". This is exactly what Lions does.

Neil Algar- of course everyone knows Neil! Why did I join Lions, and why am I still a Lion? I came to Matamata from Wellington as a GP in late 1957, knowing no-one but keen to make friends. Lions was virtually unknown when a meeting of local men in 1958 was introduced to the concept and decided to charter what was I think the ninth club in New Zealand. We were a varied group as a matter of principle, and Lions gave us the opportunity to meet socially and to be part of the community outside our professional contacts and commitments. Jack McAnnalley and I are the last of that group of Matamata Charter Lions, and I am sure Jack and Merle would agree with my comments.

Over the years Lions gave me so much more than I gave to the club and its projects. Eunice and I made lifelong friends and we appreciated so much more what Matamata provided than we could have done outside Lions.

We both became involved in other local and national organisations, but Matamata Lions remained very important in our lives and kept us in constant contact with people whose friendship and experience we valued.

In recent years it has become increasingly said that people now are too busy to devote their time to service club membership. I must confess that we didn’t have the time to consider if our lives were busy. I do know that there are now so many things available to make almost everything we do easier, faster and more efficient. Doesn’t that mean that we should in fact have more time available, not less, and isn’t membership of a service club a good way to contribute to those things we believe ‘they’ should provide to make life in our community more liveable? Paradoxical, isn’t it?

while I am sorry that the passage of time has made me an unintentional major contributor to the club’s rising average age I have enjoyed the ongoing companionship and particularly taking part in many physical on-the-spot projects. The club has significantly helped many local organisations and individuals, as well as contributing to national and sometimes international projects. It is easy and I hope excusable to be a bit smug, but what Lions have done, or built, is visible in many parts of Matamata. Several buildings at Firth Tower, the IHC building on Station Road and being part of major additions to the Centennial Pool were major construction works. If newer Lions get the same degree of pleasure and satisfaction out of Lions as I have, their membership is well worth while. I personally would encourage anyone interested to come along and let us enjoy your company at a dinner meeting. As you can see Lions - Service organisation- is rewarding and makes a difference to our community.

Will cancer affect you?

i, I ask the question because it seems it used to be I would wonder if someone I know would be inflicted with that hideous disease – now its seems to be more of a case of “when” will we be? In my line of work as a retailer I see and talk to a lot of people and its sadly, a regular thing to be talking to people who had had, got, or know someone living with the effects of cancer. The question is how do we stop it? I certainly don’t have the answer but it does raise the question of how we can help. As a sports store owner, we take an interest in people’s health and wellbeing so we have decided to try and raise funds for cancer research and have a bit of fun while doing it. We have put up $1,000 worth of sports gear of your choice, for the best mo grown during November, and a further $1,000 worth of sports gear for a lucky draw. There is a small donation of $10 to enter but all money raised will be donated to the cause. Great idea? I’m not sure but I feel a real need to try something so come on in, sign up and give your $10 to something very worthwhile.

A little bit of country, a lot of celebration

n afternoon of spectacular entertainment attracted capacity crowds at Matamata Primary School hall on Sunday.

Although the event was “the usual” for Matamata Country Music Club, two extra special guests and a bit of a celebration for one of the club favourites meant visitors had travelled far and wide to attend the monthly meet.

Almost 50 years since he was discovered on the New Faces televised competition, Brendan Dugan was very pleased to support the afternoon not only as a close friend of the Tappin and extended families, but also as a way to give back to those who have supported him over his exponential career. Brendan was just 16 years old when, thanks to his rich, baritone voice and his mother Coral sending in one of his records for television show auditions, he became a star virtually overnight. Prior to this, Brendan had won a string of talent quests - one of which, when he was 13, rewarded him with a recording session and a 45 release on Christchurch entrepreneur Hoghton Hughes’ Sailor-Boy label.

Equally welcomed to Matamata, was Dennis Marsh who started out with Christian music, then studied theology and lead a youth ministry! In 1984 he became involved with country

music and began performing around New Zealand. He won a number of local awards, and eventually released his debut album, For You, in 1989. Dennis regularly tours with Brendan so it was a huge thrill for local members and guests to have the opportunity to take in the pair’s talent and enjoy mingling afterwards.

During the afternoon, popular long-time member of Matamata Country Music Club, Cath McDonald was recognised with a break in proceedings to celebrate her 89th birthday. She was described as the one “always helping out” whether that was manning the kitchen, fundraising and sourcing sponsorship, organising various events from the Red Star Awards to the Annual Spectacular and rallying the volunteers for Op Shop week! After the audience and family members sung happy birthday, Cath was presented with a beautiful birthday cake and although overwhelmed, was absolutely delighted.

Open to all, Matamata Country Music Club welcomes visitors and completely family friendly, meets on the third Sunday of every month at Matamata primary School hall from 1pm.

are congratulated on achievements within the programme and given the opportunity to offer their thanks and a brief summary of their experience within Gateway. “On behalf of our students, I can’t offer enough appreciation to our local businesses that continue to step up and offer work placements for our young people,” says Kym. “Many have developed into trade apprenticeships, full or part time employment, or initiated directional choices where senior school or tertiary subject choices are concerned. There is nothing more rewarding than seeing a student become focussed and passionate about something they may not have otherwise had the opportunity to explore.”

As well as more traditional career choices such as building, plumbing hairdressing or hospitality for instance, Kym has seen increased interest in both the

farming and agricultural sector and more specialised areas such as sports, tourism and radio. “Industry training providers and tertiary institutions are pivotal in ensuring unit standards or short courses are available to students looking to further explore these options” she says. “And of course, First Aid, Health and Safety and skill training relevant to the industry are compulsory components of all students committing to the Gateway programme.

We aim to ensure students are “work place” ready and are transitioned into these environments as seamlessly as possible.”

Along with various holiday courses, Kym has appreciated the opportunity to liaise with business and community groups such as Women’s Club, local service groups and BNI, the weekly local business network group. “Our employers continue to be

extremely supportive” says Kym, “and through regular contact, are fully aware of the benefits helping shape our young people’s future and their career choices. It also gives them a unique opportunity to evaluate a student’s suitability within their business if they’re looking to take on staff or perhaps, prime new trainees or apprentices.”

Although placements have come to an end for 2017, Kym is available to discuss 2018 options with any businesses or personnel that may be new to Gateway, or looking to offer an opportunity to a senior student who meets the criteria of joining the Gateway programme. Committed to more than sales and service, the team at Phil’s Motorcycle Centre are working with New Zealand’s leading rider training company to ensure all local motorcycle riders get maximum enjoyment and performance from their passion for riding.

Through Pro Riders, bikes are available for use with the Basic Handling Skills course or you are welcome to bring your own as long as it is road legal – helmets however are not provided so you will need to bring your own. No need to suffer in silence he Hearing Association exists to aid the hearing impaired in all areas of their life. The Matamata Branch had their first meeting in August 1960. In those days it was run by a committee and a group of dedicated volunteers who raised funds and, with the assistance of the local Lions and Rotary Clubs, built and opened their own rooms in 1991.

After working with locals for 17 years it would be fair to assume Bridget Gill has literally heard everything! She’s built great relationships with all kinds of people over the years, many of whom are regular clients of the Meura Street facility, and has been able to refer hundreds of people to all areas of audiology services. The rooms have now become a one-stop-shop for all your hearing needs, ear cleaning services with Ear Care, and our Ear Nurse specialist, Eunice Redmayne.

“We are here to help people with any type of hearing problem” says Bridget, “and, as an incorporated society, are not

for profit. This also allows us to offer a broad range of free services to our community that includes advice and assistance with everything from specialist TV devices and telephones for example, to being able to take care of minor repairs, cleaning and the supply of consumable such as batteries etc.”

“Having such a great reciprocal relationship with Triton Hearing means that referrals are easy and available without having to travel out of town” Bridget says. “Brett Robertson, our Triton Senior Audiologist, is very well acquainted with our locals especially given he was instrumental in setting up an audiology clinic at the Matamata Hearing Association rooms 19 years ago the first in Matamata.”

“Hearing loss can have a huge impact on a person’s quality of life, both physically and emotionally” says Bridget, “and in some cases has been linked to stress, depression,

loneliness, reduced job performance – even reduced physical and mental health.

Glittering ceremony for Business Awards he winners of this year’s MatamataPiako Business Awards were announced at a glittering ceremony last Thursday night attended by 37 businesses from around the district.

torised funeral hearse in the 1920s (glass according to the founder’s son Graeme!), and how his father came up with the slogan, “Furnish with Waterson’s and Bank the Difference”.

The Bayleys Business Excellence Award for Matamata went to The Boltholder, while the Gull Customer Service Award went to Westpac. Morrinsville winners were Café Frock for the Bayleys Business Excellence Award and House of Travel for the Gull Customer Service Award. Te Aroha’s Fitzone NZ won the Bayleys Business Excellence Award while Gatman Glamour took out the Gull Customer Service Award.

Droppin’ a line with Matamata fishing club ith a strong contingent of junior members braving the weather, the second monthly tournament at Matamata Fishing Club celebrated some awesome fishing despite the rain. 54 anglers weighed in a total of 207 fish which, with an average weight of 1.591kg, was a great result said 2017/18 President, Chris Bungard.

“Our club goes from strength to strength and aside from the commitment and support of a terrific committee and hugely appreciated sponsors, it’s the family atmosphere and camaraderie that ensures every fishing experience is making memories that really are unequalled” he said.

“There is nothing more rewarding for us as a club, to see members roll in on a Sunday afternoon with the kids sporting huge smiles and, whether it’s an eel from down the back of the farm, a sprat off the wharf or a bin full of pannies, get excited to weigh in their treasure! In a district like ours, we are so fortunate to have the best of the outdoors right on our doorstep and it’s neat to see locals taking full advantage of all it has to offer.”

Following that in November, Matamata Musical Theatre present their dinner theatre production of the musical comedy “Rome Sweet Rome”. Also in November, at the Shambles Theatre, Rotorua Little Theatre presents the John Chapman comedy “Kindly Leave the Stage”, about the theatrical disasters that occur when an actor in a play forgets his line.

Over in Tauranga Detour Theatre, in the converted historic Baptist church building in the historic village, presents the Paul Elliot comedy “Exit Laughing”. season. Riverlea Theatre Hamilton opens the comedy musical revue “Boobs the Musical The World According to Ruth Wallis” for a three week season. This revue, directed by Dennis Ralph, is a collection of 23 songs that follow the career of Ruth Wallis and her struggle to perform her “naughty” songs, some of which were banned in Australia at the time.

Finally, Morrinsville Little Theatre presents the dinner show “Forbidden Broadway’s Greatest Hits”, a musical revue satirizing some of Broadways most memorable shows.

A lot of theatre and a lot of laughs to be had in our region between the end of October and early December, so no reason to be miserable, enjoy.

Fishing Report

i, as I put pen to paper the forecast for the next few days looks like a lot of sunshine – yes, I know we might need to look up a book to see what that is!

The local trout fishing scene has been a bit patchy mainly due to the extra water flow and colour in the streams due to the rain. The good news there is that weather this week is mainly fine and the fishing will get better and better as the flow drops.

In the Rotorua area the trophy lakes have now been open for two weeks and a pattern is starting to take shape. The best sized and conditioned fish are coming off Okataina and Rotoiti. Tarawera has reasonable numbers being caught but generally the condition of them is very poor. One area worth a mention on its own is the Ohau Channel. Trout guide down there, Glen Skinner, tells me there has been some very nice fish caught.

To the south to the Taupo area and the rivers and streams continue to fish well.

Wet flies have been producing the results but I think the time of year and conditions are fast approaching when the dry flies will come into their own. Another good news story in the area is that the lake is producing some nice fish as well. Not big fish but generally the condition factor of them is very good. However there are a few recovering fish so be prepared to let the odd one go.

To the sea – well, where do I start? This is a fabulous time of the year to catch fish.

Out on the west coast it is just snapper city! Two local fishing gurus, Chooky Conder and Phil Stevens, ventured out off Raglan on the Saturday of our last fishing club comp. The boys headed out to 55m of water and slayed them. The limit was soon in the bin and, get this, every snapper was in double figures and the biggest, 19lb, now that’s fishing! To the south a bit to Kawhia, it’s a similar story. Dwayde Pinny,

skipper of the Clansman, has been loading up most days with limit bags – many of them in double figures and the best last week, 25lb!

Up to the Coromandel. The snapper fishing there is just getting better and better at this time of the year. The water is warming up and the females are growing roe.

This makes them feed more which means better fishing for you, the angler. There are big tides this weekend so it’s a good thing to fish the inner forms – a bit more tide flow is good to move the burley and attract those better sized snapper. Local farmer, Dave Bennett and his family fished out under a kahawai workup last week and using kaburra’s, landed some beautiful snapper up to 13lb.

Over the ranges to the Mercury Bay area and John Ellwood is very pleased with the number of snapper around the Merc’s.

John has been finding it a bit tough during the day but very productive in the evening at the change of light.

Over the Kaimais to the Bay of Plenty.

We went out to Mayor Island last weekend and got a very nice bin of snapper. No monsters but the best was about 12lb. Just over from us was Owee, Snapper and his three girls and they also caught some very nice fish. Over at Motiti it was a different story, the fishing was very tough. Local fisho Graham Hornsey fished out there with not much reward and, if he cant catch them, then nobody can ah!
