ell hi and welcome to the last issue of 2017. I can almost see you clapping your hands thinking this is the last stuff with Caron blurb you’re poor brain is going to be subjected to for the year - sometimes it’s like those really bad movies where, as much as you want to turn the TV off, you don’t and kind of peep through your fingers every now and then to see if it’s still as bad! Sadly I can’t even apologise. For the past 12 and a half years I have shared the ups and the downs, the happy, sad, glad and bad of it all and honestly, it’s kind of who I am and I can promise with the New Year, it’ll be more of the same so hang on tight – or move your eyes faster!

Like pretty much everyone, I’ve started thinking about Christmas and even though my beautiful boys are all grown up, I can’t wait to have them come home to the smell of a real tree, Mary’s Boy Child by Boney M thundering through the house and so much food their eyeballs start swelling. I have to admit, as they’ve all got older (and so much bigger than me) I do miss the craziness of three little boys tearing around like mad things so excited they can’t sleep and ripping into a gazillion “quantity not quality” prezzies left overnight by the fat guy in red! Actually, we were talking about what they’d like the other day and honestly, I got that “Why, I think I might just cry” lump in my throat.

One started with “Nah mumma, it’s about presence, not presents” and the other two said “yep, we don’t see each other enough anymore. It’s going to be cool to just hang with the fam and chill.” It’s little moments like that that remind you how incredibly important time is so, first and foremost, remember those you love and appreciate that no amount of gift wrapping can ever replace it.

I do have to say though, that even though

my own are past Santa shopping, there is one little man that I can’t wait to spoil. My little nephew Millar! He was born in July and although he is highly unlikely to be impressed just yet, I can’t wait to give him his prezzie – it’s a project that Jono from AJS Engineering helped me with that although probably extremely unPC as far as health and safety regulations go, I’m hoping he’ll get enjoyment out of when he’s a wee bit bigger! Thanks once again Jono for your awesome welding skills… you have the patience of a god!

Workwise, I can’t believe another year is about to clock off. 2017 has literally flown and when I look back over various issues I’ve published this year, it’s been another 12 month’s worth of amazing achievements and awesome celebrations - of course, also hinged with sadness and change. I read a neat quote once that said “One day you’re going to be someone’s memory – make it a good one.” So, as we

head into Christmas, my thoughts are with all our local families that have experienced sadness and maybe will be missing someone they love at the dinner table this year.

I hope all your memories are good ones and remember sadness is only a reflection of love.

Ok so cheering it up a bit, I need to offer some thanks of my own! There’s a group of people that although most of you don’t see them often, they are such an essential part of my world here at Scene. Firstly of course, it’s Keith, Elaine and their gorgeous employee, Michaela. Over the past year poor ole Michaela has kind of (I think) got used to my crazy madness and I don’t think she looks at me with quite as much confusion now (?!) or at least, she hides it better! These guys are the design team behind Scene and layup the pages to make it the beautiful publication I am so incredibly proud of.

Next to these three, there are 15 locals I employ to deliver Scene and throughout the year, rain, hail or shine, they’re out there. Yes there is the odd time you might be missed, or you get your paper later than you’d like, but please appreciate that some of these kids are as young as 10 years of age and they do do their absolute best.

Scene is a priceless paper and more often than not, spare copies are available at the office, Paperplus or at Challenge. They certainly don’t miss anyone on purpose and I for one, am so thankful to have them – it’d be a looooong walk on my own!

Well with that said, there’s tons more I could be burbling on about but even I can see my space is filling up fast so had better wrap it up (ha ha… like that?). So until next year, be good, be kind and be careful and for the last time this year, I’ll see you round like macadamia mousse… That was actually a hint for my mummy… just saying!

Ideas for Christmas..

A final wave with the year 8s reviously employed as Deputy Principal at Berkley Normal Middle School in Hamilton, it was with excitement Daryl Gibbs was appointed the Principal role at Matamata Intermediate School three years ago. Of course he was a little nervous – he and his wife have three young children, they didn’t know anyone here in Matamata and the move to a small community meant he would definitely be under scrutiny!

As it happened however, there was no need for concern. The Gibbs family were immediately welcomed and it wasn’t long before Daryl began making his mark at Matamata Intermediate School. He was particularly focussed on the sustained success of the digital technology infrastruc-

ture, boy’s education and raising levels of engagement, and most importantly, encouraging effective and lifelong learning. “When deciding on my own career path, I remember my father telling me it doesn’t matter what you do, but aim to be the best you can be at it� Daryl says. “I’ve always kept that in the back of my mind and it’s definitely had an impact on my teaching career – and the way I encourage students with their choices.�

In being the best he can, Daryl says his philosophy is relatively simple. “It’s crucial to provide an environment where learners are at the heart of every considered aspect’ he says. “This starts of course, with creating strong and effective partnerships with home, school and community, and

keeping communication lines open and available. Students at intermediate school level are beginning to develop a strong sense of identity so creating a respectful and trusting culture is essential to increase commitment and engagement in school life.�

With the end of the final 2017 school term nearing, it’s not just the year 8 students that will wave fond goodbyes as they head into the next chapter of their education. Daryl also, will be beginning his next challenge in January having recently accepted the position of Principal at Cambridge Middle School. “I would like to take this opportunity on behalf of my family, to thank everyone for how we have been warmly received into the Matamata community over the past three years� says Daryl. “We have enjoyed our time in Matamata and will take many fond memories with us. Although I am excited about the opportunity to begin my new role, I will miss the parents and whanau, the staff and most of all, saying good morning to your children as they come in the gate each morning! Matamata intermediate School is in a strong position, with a very clear vision and direction. I know that with the committed Board of Trustees and staff, the school is set up well to continue to be successful in delivering high quality educational opportunities for our community. I have been exceptionally proud to have led our school over that past three years and wish the new principal every success. Have a safe and enjoyable holiday season. Nga mihi, Daryl Gibbs.�

Keeping eyes on the community

here’s nothing quite like a good news story and for volunteers of the Matamata Community Patrol, a win is particularly rewarding!

Recently while on patrol, duty volunteers noticed local police officers appeared to be looking for something in the area between the skatepark and McDonald’s carpark. They stopped to see if assistance was required and were advised a German tourist had just had his backpack stolen.

Obviously this was extremely distressing as not only were all his belongings in the backpack, so was his money and passport.

Given the incident had just happened, CPNZ volunteers decided to get straight into action and, as it happened, very quickly noticed a couple of bikes abandoned in an odd location. Pulling up and seeing entry had been gained to an empty building, the volunteers decided to further investigate. “It really was one of those incredibly satisfying moments for our patrollers” relayed Matamata Community Patrol Chair, Brian Hunter. “The backpack

was there and although it had been ransacked with contents spread about, the passport and other belongings were safe.

The only thing that was missing was the cash. Of course the fact that the burglary happened is extremely unfortunate but thanks to the quick response and assistance from our team, the situation resulted in a lot less trauma for the tourist than initially expected! We were very pleased with the outcome.”

Not to ever take the place of police, Matamata Community Patrol are simply extra eyes and ears in our community.

They scope all areas of town including the central business district, industrial area, residential and rural streets and roads and where necessary, have direct lines of communication to local police. Incident reports are filed on every shift and if there’s anything remotely suspicious, it’s also noted.

ficer for Matamata Community Patrol, Clive Williams. “Then, even a few days later, police have had an interest in the vehicle and have been pleased to go through our reports for further information. It’s great to hear that our systems and protocols can have a profound effect on helping them with a successful resolution.”

As well as increasing patrolling hours over the holiday season, on foot patrols have been initiated during the day in the central business district. “In the past, we have had excellent feedback from local businesses that our presence has provided a definite deterrent to would be offenders” says Clive. “Our job is not to catch offenders but to observe and, if necessary, call in any incidents. Having a police radio installed in the community patrol car has been invaluable in terms of immediate contact with local police and/or the control centre when necessary. It also allows live time updates on activities in the area.”

As well as patrolling residential, commercial and rural areas around the district, Matamata CPNZ Coordinator and Chair, Brian Hunter is happy to hear from community members that may require extra attention to their dwellings if it’s likely to be unoccupied for any length of time. “If and when we are in the area we are happy to pay a little more attention if we know to” he says. “Our mission is to keep our community safe from offenders and if we are aware of such plans, we will do our best to help.” You are welcome to contact Brian on 07 888 6557 or by email at matamatacp@gmail.com for further information.

hen Sonya Church, Natasha Hellyer and Marnie Sutherland put their heads together to hatch a plan that would not only provide a fun event but raise funds for a great cause, they had no idea just what an entertaining evening would ensue.

Featuring new seasons surf, skate and streetwear from shEd and funky, fresh hairstyles and “do’s” from Blades, over a dozen locals of all ages were conned into strutting their stuff and showcasing the latest summer styles and boy, they didn’t disappoint! Marnie’s husband Paul compeered the evening but of course, with initial nerves quickly subsiding, the models certainly added to the entertainment!

“They all started off a little nervous” laughs Sonya, “but once the first run was over with, they relaxed and had a lot of fun with it! Marnie had done a super job of coordinating everything so the evening just seemed to flow beautifully.”

Along with the fashion extravaganza, designs by textile students at Matamata College were displayed on mannequins outside and drew very favourable attention. “Gone are the days of throwing together an apron or pin cushion” laughed one guest! “These young students are showing exceptional talent and vision at such a young age – it’s great to see.”

Although the final figure hadn’t been confirmed at the time of print, it is esti-

mated that close to $3,000 was raised for the Matamata College senior student’s European art and media experience in 2018.

“These funds will help tremendously” said art teacher and trip coordinator, Jolene Rogerson. “We are very grateful and appreciate the huge effort Sonya, Natasha and Marnie have put into the event – it really was so much fun!”

International Inner Wheel award for our Gwen atamata can be justifiably proud of long-time resident Gwen Kirkwood, who was recently presented with a Margarette Golding Award for service to her community. Margarette Golding, a nurse, business woman and the wife of a Manchester Rotarian, founded the Inner Wheel movement in 1924, following thwarted attempts to join Rotary.

The international award was presented at a recent morning tea in Matamata, attended by the entire District NZ293 Executive, with President Carole Young at the helm; IWNZ President Christina King and IWNZ IPP Joanne Gaudin and, of course, a large number of IW Matamata members. Inner Wheel Matamata nominated Gwen for the award through District NZ293, with 2016-17 national president Joanne Gaudin (a past District NZ293 president) submitting it.

Gwen, who will be 90 next February, has worked tirelessly for a number of organisations since she came to Matamata as a young bride in 1950. A member of St Andrew’s Presbyterian Church, Gwen served on the church’s board of managers for over four decades and was an active member of Association of Presbyterian Women (APW) for over 60 years, serving as a committee member and treasurer.

Gwen has been an active member of the church’s Fireside group for over 40 years; a member of Friends of St Andrew’s whereby she visited the sick with flowers and a kind word for well over 40 years; and a member of the church choir for 30.

IHC has also benefited from Gwen’s energy and enthusiasm. She has served on the fundraising committee for over 40 years, organising the annual house-to house collection and, later, the street appeal. She also organises the staffing of the Op Shop each year on IHC’s behalf and, for many years previously organised the annual street stall caravan in the main street.

Gwen has been a willing and enthusiastic participant of Save the Children Fund’s annual appeals for many decades, again, staffing the Op Shop for this group.

Matamata’s Friendship Circle, which provides a weekly social outing for people who are on their own or ‘shut in’, also benefits from Gwen’s involvement. Gwen joined this committee over 40 years ago and still collects and delivers people from their homes, as well as baking for and serving afternoon tea. Gwen has delivered Meals on Wheels since 1965 when the service began in Matamata and, until the

Matamata Health Shuttle was founded nine years ago, transported patients to appointments at Waikato Hospital 60kms away through the Samaritans’ group.

A member of National Council of Women for many years, Gwen still serves on the Matamata Association of Social Services which, in the past, assisted in setting up Meals on Wheels and Food Bank. Gwen was on the Matamata Christmas Choir committee member for 30 years and sang at every concert until five years ago. She was asked to cut the cake at the event’s 50th jubilee concert in 2010; such is the respect in which she is held.

As well as taking an active involvement in these many facets of her community, Gwen also provided devoted care to her children and grandchildren and was late husband Jack’s staunchest supporter, not only in his demanding business, but also in his 34-year trustee involvement with Matamata’s Pohlen Hospital and his service club Matamata Lions’ projects.

Buddy the Elf

BY NATHAN GANN, PASTOR MATAMATA BAPTIST CHURCH The movie Elf is a great Christmas movie to watch every year. If you haven’t seen the movie, Buddy is a human raised in the North Pole. He follows the three elf rules: Number 1. "Treat every day like Christmas." 2. "There's room for everyone on the nice list." 3. "The best way to spread Christmas cheer is singing loud for all to hear." But Buddy is a human so he is a little bit different. His elf father tells him, “You're not a cotton-headed ninny muggins!

You're just...special.” And he tells Buddy that his biological dad lives in a “magical land called New York City.”

forgot what is “important in life.” He spends the rest of the movie bringing Christmas cheer, and helping people discover what’s important in life.

And despite his circumstances, Buddy also had joy no matter what happened.

The movie is a brilliant picture of what God did thru Christ. The Christmas story. Crazy circumstances, and yet we see a stable full joy. It’s tough

to be joyful when life doesn’t go as planned, but it is possible. We also forget what’s important in life, because periodically we all find ourselves on the naughty list. Christmas is about the one born in a manger, who brought joy to the world.

Christmas means that joy really can spread, not because of the presents we get, but by remembering what is important in life.

Growing a mo for a bro

t’s not just that he promotes sports, fishing, the outdoors and all things blokey – Chris Bungard, better known as Bungey to the locals, is worried. More particularly, worried for men; or at least the health of men. Prostate cancer is on the rise, testicular cancer rates have doubled over past decades, poor mental health leads to three quarters of the numbers of people taking their own lives being men and yet, people remain almost silent.

“Men’s health really is at crisis point” says Bungey. “We all have friends and ac-

quaintances that are dying far too young, before their time, and we need to take action. They were all keen to support the Foundation so along with contributing to a best mo prize of $1,000 worth of Sportsworld vouchers, this was matched for a lucky draw which gave all contributors, including women, a chance to win. “Movember is probably the only time of year when our wives, girlfriends or partners see facial hair as more than bristly and unruly follicles on our faces” laughs Bungey. “Our mo’s become a ribbon of respect that reminds everyone around us of the importance of men’s health.”

Overwhelmed at the support from locals, Bungey was proud to see Matamata significantly exceeded entries from participating Sportsworld stores. “Matamata is relatively small I guess” says Bungey, “So sadly, when one of the locals is diagnosed or perhaps is undergoing treatment, the chances are fairly high that we’ll all know each other.

To have so many men take part and then be supported by their mates and families at the judging and prize night was awesome and of course, meant a significant donation could be forwarded to the Movember Foundation. Even on the night, cash donations continued – it was incredibly heart-warming to see such support and camaraderie.

Cancer affects so many of us in so many ways and if together we can put our hand in our pockets to help research and eventually I hope, see the back of it – then I’ll grow a mo to my knees! I’d personally like to thank everyone who took part or donated – it was a lot of fun for a great cause.”

Nicholson’s making midwives mobile

ohlen Hospital midwives Val Walker and Annah Young were itching to hop in and check out the features of the new Suzuki S-Cross very generously sponsored by Nicholson Auto’s this week.

The brand new vehicle, sign-written to promote maternity services, replaces the original donated car and was unveiled at the Matamata branch on Thursday. Pohlen Board, Foundation and Hospital representatives of course, were ecstatic!

“As chair of the Pohlen Foundation I know I speak for all our trustees in offering our extreme thanks for such a significant and generous gift” said Lindsay Tisch. “The Foundation was established as a fundraising arm to provide funds for capital purchases and although a vehicle for hospital use is certainly considered

essential, as you would expect, there are often wish list items that need to take priority. Your generosity has alleviated pressure on available funds and we thank you for it.”

We’ll keep you rolling Country Lodge welcome monarch this Christmas W hen Matamata Country Lodge Head Gardener, Nicky Telford learned that resident Vernon Carter loved monarch butterflies, she decided to look at ways she could help him enjoy them more and, at the same time, foster his interest into a meaningful hobby.

Her first stop was a visit to Jack Poole, a local gentleman well known for his love of the monarch. From an extremely young age Jack learned how the beautiful creatures hitchhiked to our part of the world from the islands and has basically spent

the rest of his life marvelling at the transformation from caterpillars to chrysalis and into the beautiful specimens of nature they finally become. “Jack was incredibly helpful” says Nicky, “and as well as sharing valuable information and tips on how best to feed and nurture them, took a real interest in what I was hoping to achieve at Country Lodge.”

Armed with information and suggestions on record keeping, Nicky headed off to the garden centre to purchase some Swan plants - along with seeds she could germinate at home to feed the hungry caterpillars. “Anyone who has had a Swan plant will realise just how quickly these fat

little babies can strip the foliage” laughs Nicky. “It would be a real shame to encourage them to our garden and then not have enough to feed them as they grow.”

Arriving back at Country Lodge, Nicky and Vernon planned the garden around a pole designed to hold a platform where chrysalis could form and safely hang until hatching. Its placement means that everyone has the opportunity to enjoy it from the main building and ramps which says Nicky “is lovely for the less mobile residents.” Since the garden has been planted Vernon is there on a daily basis and quite a group of residents are taking a really keen interest also.”

“2017 has been an extremely busy year” says Chief Fire Officer Kevin Curtis. “As a brigade we have had over 250 callouts, many of which have been accident and/or medical related and the year is not yet over. This number of incidence demands the availability of a full crew almost constantly and along with work, family and personal commitments, puts pressure on our volunteers. It is important this service and dedication is recognised and by combining our awards evening with a thank you to our employers, it’s nice to acknowledge our volunteers who so freely give

their time.”

Particularly proud of his brigade, it was with a great deal of pride Kevin presented one of his younger members, Brandon Austin, with the CC Vincent Firefighter of the Year trophy. “Brandon has really stepped up and at just 19 years of age, has shown remarkable maturity, skill and passion for the job. He is a credit to the Matamata station.”

Another popular team member, Heather Coffey, was presented with the Bromell Team Player Trophy and keeping up the side, fellow female firefighter, Debbie Back was awarded the Feek Trophy for cleanliness of vehicles. Kieren Barclay won the Hunter trophy for training attendance.

A particularly prestigious award, voted by members of the brigade and recently

donated by past Deputy Chief Fire Officer Gary Olsen, was jointly awarded to Brandon, Kieran and senior Firefighter, Dane Lowe. “As the old boys of the brigade, its particularly rewarding to see such great teamwork and camaraderie amongst our volunteers coming through” says Kevin.

“The fact that the vote was split three ways is a great indication to myself and my Deputy, Warren Feek, that morale is strong and everyone values each others contribution.”

Following the presentation of awards, special thanks was extended to employers of the Matamata volunteers who without question, support their absence when on call and provide cover as necessary. “As a brigade we couldn’t possibly continue to offer 24 hour service without these people” said Kevin. “The employers, our volunteer’s wives and families – even their friend’s, play an important role in our ability to be available when required and it really is appreciated.”

A surreal moment for Rolling out the new heads K college dux earing her name called at the announcement of the 2017 Matamata College Dux was an almost surreal moment for year 13 student Talia Parker.

She is a young woman that has, at every opportunity, put her best foot forward, worked extremely hard and is absolutely elated to have had that recognised. “It really was an unreal moment” says Talia.

“There are so many incredibly academic students in my year and honestly, any one of us could have taken it – I would have been really proud of whoever was named to be honest!”

With a total of 402 credits, 104 of these were Level 3 excellence, some of which were achieved in year 12 having taken two extra subjects. “When I look at that number, it does seem quite a lot” laughs Talia, “but it wasn’t particularly that I set a plan.

My parents have always said you don’t have to be the best, you just have to be ‘your’ best so, when you take that kind of attitude and mix it with five years worth of amazing teachers that have honestly provided a world of chances and opportunities to succeed, you really do take a feeling of personal achievement from every individual excellence.”

Equally as excited for Proxime Accessit, Ben Lincoln, Talia says it’s taken her a wee while to get her head around not only the recognition of being named Dux, but that after five years, her college education is done! “I have had an incredibly rewarding

time at Matamata College and thank every one of my teachers that had a hand in my success” she says. “I’m now looking forward to winding down and being a teenager for the summer - just taking it easy before I head off to Auckland University next year where I will be studying law along with an arts degree.”

nowing you’re up for selection but waiting alongside a bunch of peers you know you’d be equally proud to see called up is a pretty nerve wracking feeling but for four year 12 students, the beads of sweat were absolutely worth it with the announcement of 2018 head students.

Reuben Jones, Kate Smitstra, Harrison Fountain and Brooke Dunbar were named Head Boy and Girl, and Deputy Boy and Girl respectively last week, and are honoured with the responsibility. “I guess we’ve all aspired to these positions since we walked in the gate for the first time at year 9 level” says Reuben. “Everything at that time seems so overwhelming and the year 13 students especially, were the people you couldn’t wait to be!”

Echoing Reuben’s thoughts, Kate is excited about representing the school as head girl, particularly with 2018 celebrat-

ing the centenary anniversary. “It’s going to be an exciting, challenging and rewarding year for us all” she says. “To be leading the students at such an auspicious time in the school’s history is something I’m sure we’ll remember for the rest of our lives.”

Along with official representative duties, Reuben and Kate will be supported by Harrison and Brooke who are looking forward to working as a team to enhance school spirit and do everything they can to ensure students of all levels are encouraged to fully engage in opportunities offered at the school. “We want to ensure inclusion across the board” says Harrison, “and have our peers from year 9 to 13 see their leaders as approachable and on their level. If every student was motivated to be the best they can be, we’d have an incredibly successful community of learners!”

Along with a commitment to the Student Support programme, Brooke believes the 2017 head students have set a great benchmark that together, the new heads and deputies can enhance and expand on. “We are so lucky to have an awesome bunch of seniors alongside us next year, and whether it’s in roles such as house captains, sports, cultural or academic leaders, decisions will be in the best interest of all students. Back in time with Aspire spire Arts Academy held their end of year show last weekend and what an incredible spectacular! Along with Tinkerbell and all her fairytale friends, a journey through the time machine saw highlights of the past ten annual shows come back to life. As well as the original classes, ballet, tap, acro, lyrical and contemporary dance, and even musical theatre have been introduced and, it seems, are becoming more popular every year! “Aspire is so much more than I could have dreamed” says Tammy. “My students that have become teachers and assistants over the past 10 years, the incredible support and encouragement of parents and families, and of course my wonderful students – it is the epitome of teamwork.

Every person, no matter how big or small their role, is an essential and integral part of what makes our academy work. We currently have around 280 students in approximately 350 various placements and coordinating this successfully couldn’t begin to happen without the passion, dedication and commitment of our amazing manager, Megan Carter, and her ability to just take everything in her stride. It might have started as my dream, but it’s certainly grown into a part of the beat that keeps a lot of hearts going.”

As with each of the past 10 years, a large proportion of the second term syllabus is dedicated to learning, perfecting and performing an end of year show which continues to be an extremely successful showcase of talent from preschool through to adult students. The 2017 show “Back in Time” was held last weekend and was a journey celebrating past shows narrated through Tinkerbell’s story with the help of a broken time machine. Following the Sunday performance, the annual Aspire prize giving was held with student’s individual achievement and successes celebrated.

Tammy got immense satisfaction in developing and sharing the success of her hip hop students, she had always had a dream of having her own studio where she could have the freedom to celebrate performing arts in a variety of genres including dance, drama and maybe even vocal training. She had no idea at that point, that returning to Matamata, her hometown, in 2008 would not only realise this dream, but provide more “happily ever after’s” than she could have ever imagined.

“Blessed really is the only word for it” says Tammy. “My studio, Aspire Arts Academy was born, I met the most incredible man who of course since, has become my husband and father of our children and, with my first group of enrolled students – I was so fortunate to meet a group of people that have since become my second family, some of my closest friends, and people that continually inspire me. I am just so very, very grateful for such amazing opportunities.”

“In loving memory of Ellie Marie Kurth 2009 – 2017”

n extremely special unveiling was held at Walton School almost a week ago that honoured a special little girl that will never be forgotten.

Ellie Kurth was one of those people that literally spread love, joy and happiness wherever she went. She hated to see anyone unhappy and if she came across someone she felt needed a friend, was always the first to jump up and invite them to play, talk or just sit. It was a quality her parents Jeremy and Anna and her big sister Brenna adored about her, so when several local businesses offered their support to create a special tribute to the school in her honour, the Kurth family thought it perfect.

“Ellie’s passing in June absolutely broke our hearts” says Anna. “and, although we continue to grieve for our daughter, the kindness and thoughts sent our way over recent months has been incredibly appreciated. Seeing local businesses from our community support the idea of a Friendship Seat and garden is overwhelming. It’s such a beautiful, generous gesture and something we know our Ellie would have loved. She loved rainbows and initially we were going to paint it in bright coloured stripes, however in the end we decided to go with her favourite colour, purple. We can’t thank everyone who has contributed to this gift enough, it really does mean the world to us, our daughter Brenna and the Walton school community.”

school last Wednesday, it was an emotional moment, particularly for Jeremy speaking on behalf of his family but also as the school principal. “If anyone is feeling a little sad or in need of a friend, this seat acknowledges that to other students who can then show their support by inviting them to play or have a chat” he said. “It’s also a place that students are welcome to enjoy time together, relax or just enjoy a quiet moment. We want you to enjoy it like Ellie would have.”

In blessing the seat and officially unveiling it, Dion Edgecombe summed it up by acknowledging the love and friendship

represented with this seat is not in spite of Ellie, but because of her. “We are so thankful to have had her, but we’re also incredibly thankful to all of you that continue to remember her.”

Over coming weeks a lovely garden area will be planted to further enhance Ellie’s spot. Celebrating cultural identity

apahaka is the term for Maori dance, kapa meaning to form a line and haka, to dance. It is an avenue to express and showcase heritage and cultural identity through song (waiata) and dance. At Matamata Primary School celebrating Maori performing arts is an important part of the culture and with the committed effort and dedication of instructors, they thought it would be great to extend an invitation to other local schools to share their skills and talent. Opening with a welcome from senior students Daniqua Savage Karanga and Makaila Pauro, Matamata Primary opened the afternoon and was followed with performances by Te Poi, Firth, Wairere and Matamata Intermediate schools. “It was a wonderful afternoon” said Deputy Principal, Peter Mair. “Students showed passion, conviction and talent in all of their performances and really enjoyed watching other schools in action. We’ve put the challenge out there for one of the other schools to host the event next year and would love to see it become an annual event. Following the performances it was a great opportunity for schools to mix and mingle together with a sausage sizzle and shared lunch.”

A perfect parade for PRA

atamata Public Relations Association Santa Parade Coordinator Hayley Horne fervently states “it never rains on her parade” – and she means it!

Hayley has coordinated the Christmas parade for the past 13 years; missing just one when welcoming the arrival of her daughter in 2011. Ironically that was the only year it rained which of course, she thinks is rather funny!

“There’s almost nothing that would keep me away from the parade” laughs Hayley.

“Organisation starts in September which, although that might seem pretty early, ensures we tick all the right boxes with things like road closures, traffic and people management and general logistics of

an event that seems to get bigger, brighter and better every year.”

Along with incredible support from local businesses, schools and community groups that enter floats annually, Hayley and Matamata Public Relations Association Manager Sue Whiting hugely appreciate continued assistance from many others including Kiwanis and Matamata Community Patrol who help with everything from ensuring public safety to curb and barrier control. “Our parade is definitely one of the best in the region I believe” says Sue. “In fact this year I had a more mature member of our community tell me that attending the parade genuinely put the joy back into Christmas for him. Seeing the faces of delighted,

happy children, community members of all ages taking part in float displays and of course, Santa and his sleigh being the tail end Charlie just made his day. It doesn’t get better than that!”

With the 2017 parade featuring almost 50 floats of all descriptions, appreciation is also extended to Edmonds Marshall, Bell & Graham and Jones Howden for supplying Santa’s lollies, Tainui Press for printed material and Matamata Business Association for providing the balloons. Ironically in the first round, Pam loved Caron Stewart. the course and played an exceptional game with seven birdies and a final score of 68 – five under the par 73! “I was over the moon” laughs Pam. “And particularly thrilled to hear I had broken the course record non placed (play the lie). Heading into the second round though, I basically had to erase the memory of my first so as not to put pressure on myself. I implemented the same game plan I started with and just hoped for the best.

Being the competitive player I am however, that was a pretty big test let me tell you!”

Completing what she describes as a fairly solid second round, Pam was overall very happy with her effort. “So much of that was due to the incredible support of my caddie, Sheelah Lamb” says Pam. “She was so much fun and Matamata Golf Club member, Pam Wright was elated to take out thanks to her knowl- the Waikato/King Country Ladies Champion of Champions touredge, experience and nament in Taumarunui recently. This success followed her win at foresight, I didn’t really her home club champs.

Centenary art on a stick ith a brief of creating a fun scene with cut outs for guests to pose for photographs, Matamata College art teacher Jolene Rogerson asked year 10 students Ella Veltman and Caitlin Crozier if they’d like to take up the challenge. It needed to be a life sized board that would suit indoor or outdoor placement depending on weather and be ready in time for the 2018 100 year centenary.

“We started by looking at all the really old photos in the corridors here at College, and researched the appropriate hair styles and stuff” says Ella. “We went for that happy la la land sort of theme with lots of grass and blue sky which made great use of painting techniques we have learned

After coming up with an idea of a boy and girl student in uniforms from the 1950s, the girls thought having them on a pogo stick would be a bit of light hearted fun. They sketched the drawing onto a two metre high board and are well on their way to completing it. “We’ve really enjoyed this project” says Caitlin. “It’s a huge privilege to be asked to show our skills with art and to have it featured at such an auspicious occasion will leave us feeling pretty proud! We really hope visitors to the school enjoy it.” Caron Stewart.

atamata Intermediate School art teacher, Karen Raymond offered her year 8 enrichment class a pretty special opportunity early this year.

They were asked to create a visual that they believed, best represented the school.

After discussion, the challenge was accepted and the first group agreed that a large outdoor mural would do the trick.

Having completed the project recently, a special unveiling was held at the school and both Karen and Daryl Gibbs, the principal, were delighted. “Students have incorporated elements that represent various aspects incredibly well” says

Hobbiton takes out floral trilogy

obbiton Movie Set has taken the trilogy and scooped three big awards at the New Zealand Flower and Garden Show in Auckland. ‘The Beekeeper’s Hobbit Hole, designed and built by the Hobbiton Movie Set team has won a gold medal, the Horticultural Excellence award and the Best in Show award.

The award winning garden references the village of Hobbiton and was created over a two week period especially for the New Zealand Flower and Garden Show.

Hobbiton is excited to give attendee’s a little glimpse of Middle-earth with an amazing garden exhibit that captures Tolkien’s naturally rambling style, with a profusion of plants co-existing without rigid lines or divisions. ‘Gardening without boarders’ best describes the Hobbit Hole garden’s

style. The Hobbiton Movie Set Garden creation is the home of the hardworking Beekeeper who plays an important role in the village gardens, crop fields and honey supply. Many of the flower species in the garden are favourites of bees, meaning the Beekeeper has a garden for both pleasure and produce. Bees appear in many of Tolkien’s works and at times, were outlandishly sized compared to modern bees.

In many of Tolkien’s imaginings, trees were part of the structural architecture. The ground becomes buildings roofs, and buildings are climbing frames for plants.

Our hope is to have the garden not appear as recently installed but well lived in, with the impression the beekeeper has just ‘ducked away’ from sitting in the sun. Most of all, we would like to engage visitors and fill them with the feeling of ‘I would just like sit in this garden for a while’’.

arlier this year, the IHC Waikato South Association applied to the IHC New Zealand Legacy fund for help with the purchase of a disability change table and monorail hoist costing around $20,000 for Matamata Swim Zone.

The Association has been very appreciative of being able to work in partnership with the Matamata Piako District Council on this Project which will enable people with a range of disabilities to enjoy the local community swimming pool year round.

Recently, the Association invited members of the community to attend a demonstration of this specialised equipment in action. This was facilitated by Arzeen Cooper, Occupational Therapist from Therapy Services, Community Living. Representatives from IHC, Matamata Swim Zone, Community groups, family members and caregivers from the local area were present at the demonstration, as well as people from Morrinsville and Hamilton.

Arzeen Cooper along with IDEA Services personnel showed how the new equipment made access from the Changing Room to the pool so much easier and safer for both the swimmer and the support person.

In addition to the hoist, the Association has also funded a range of ‘floaties’ and slings to be used in conjunction with the hoist, that will be available for the public and stored at the pool complex. A ‘Slippery Sam’ Slide Sheet which provides an easy way of manoeuvring people, simply by sliding rather than lifting, is also available.

he Matamata Community Resource Trust governs Railside by the Green where people can find many social service providers and local community organisations willing and able to assist you.

In September we had the Annual General Meeting where two new trustees, Joanne Aoake and David Johnston were appointed. With David Wheadon as Chairperson, Rae Mortimer, Secretary/ Treasurer and Mark Sutherland Trustee we look forward to the future with new people bringing different ideas and skills to the governance board. I am Alison Greenwell, the Centre Manager, and Angela Ruscoe was appointed in July to assist me on a part-time basis.

I take this time to thank all our many supporters of Railside by the Green - especially our tenants and regular service providers that visit Railside, also the services and organisations that choose to meet at rooms provided here. Often these people come from out of town and they

A special thank you also, goes to business people that have supported us throughout the year. As a Charitable Trust this kind of service, often donated or discounted is greatly appreciated. The trust annually makes applications for funding support to assist ongoing operating expenses or other projects which is required to sustain the services provided. This type of assistance is appreciated as it makes our job much easier to ensure these services can remain in the community. We are always looking at new initiatives or to collaborate with others to provide essential services that our district may be lacking and are always open to discussion. That being said, I am very happy to have been able to offer and assist the many services we have been able to provide this year.

We have been working towards updating a local Social Service Directory and if

your group or organisation wishes to be included, we welcome your enquiry as we are hoping to get it published early next year.

At this time of year it seems, like many, I am racing towards the excitement of Christmas but for many, it can be a time of anxiety and sadness. If you are feeling overwhelmed please talk to someone like an adult family member or a mature or understanding friend. Seek help from the many professional people in our community. Your local GP could be the first person. Railside also has professionals willing to assist. Some families may also need assistance from the local food bank - or you may like to contribute to the “Giving Tree”, the Citizens Advice Bureau can assist or I can also help.

I have been fortunate to attend two social services conferences this year, one in Hamilton and the other in Auckland. To at-

tend these type of conferences is a privilege as I feel I am representing our wider community and I look forward to bringing back ideas from other communities and people. It was good to meet up with Jo McNaughton at the Waikato Community Conference in Hamilton. Jo and her team at Starfish Social Services have just opened their new premises and it was a delight to be invited to the re-branded Starfish Community Hub opening. We wish them well.

One thing that I did bring back from the last conference was: Encourage your community to look after their environment and recycle. So please use the council bins, recycle and take your rubbish with you when on holiday. We must all do our part in the world in which we live, be good role models for our future generations, our children and families.

ia ora, Well, here we are in December already! The year has flown by and no doubt this month will be a hectic one too. It certainly will be for us, as Parliament sits for four weeks this month.

The election has come and gone; although we didn’t end up with a government that the vast majority of people in the Waikato wanted, we need to work with

what we have – I’ll be working hard to make sure we get the best result possible.

It certainly feels like summer and Christmas are here. Activities in and around Matamata have been fantastic this month.

I have been involved in Matamata Christmas Parade and enjoyed the festivities at the Matamata Churches’ Christmas at the Park event. I have been busy in the electorate; meeting with community leaders across emergency services, business groups, school leaders, and Matamata Piako District Mayor Jan Barnes. I have also met many constituents in the Matamata office.

I am always interested in hearing your views, concerns and recommendations to make our community stronger. If I can ever be of help please get in touch, myself and my great Electorate Agents will happily assist you where we can.

While many of us relish this time to relax and enjoy the company of family and friends, we share a thought of kindness for others in our community who are working through what can be the busiest time of year; those in the emergency services or in primary healthcare, those farmers or growers, those working in hospitality or retail.

College sports round-up

017 has been a very successful year for our MX Team, we have welcomed two new Year 9 riders to the team and they have proved a real force to be reckoned with. Brodie Connolly and Andre Burnell have joined Jake Collins, Liam Fernyhough and Matt Holmes to create a team of five very talented riders representing the college. Over the year the boys have competed in several events around the Waikato and continue to grow in skill and confidence with each race. Recently Jake Collings and Liam Fernyhough competed in the “Nailing the peat 5” Motocross competition hosted by Hauraki Plains College.

Jake Collings competed in the Aspiring 125cc category and came away with 4th Equal, while Liam Fernyhough entered the competitive 125cc category for the first time and placed in the top half of riders. Jake then went on to compete in the first ever New Zealand Secondary Schools National MX Event in November. He entered into the competitive 15-19 year old 125cc class for the first time and came away 13th in his category. This is an awesome effort and a great way to finish up the year. Brodie Connolly who joined the team this year as a Year 9 student is no stranger to the MX Scene as he is already one of the best riders in NZ in his age group. Brodie has been very busy this year on both the National and International Track and had the incredible achievement of being selected for the Junior Worlds Team.

We are very proud of the boys for their achievements on the track and wish them all the best for next year.

Three of our boys attended the New Zealand Secondary Schools Athletics Association Track and Field Championships last weekend. Harrison Fountain ran a strong race in the 3000m placing 6th in his heat. Ollie Morton Farrelly performed incredibly well placing 11th equal in shot put and 13th in discus. With two more years as a junior he has an exciting future. Ethan Wallace ran great races, winning his heats and prelims and qualifying in the semis for both the 100 and 200m finals. Competition was fierce in the finals and he managed to come 5th in both the 100 and 200m with personal best times.

Recently we took 14 Students to the Waikato Secondary Schools Junior Ki-O-Rahi Tournament organised by Sport Waikato. We achieved an impressive three wins in pool play against Te Kuiti, Otorohanga and Rakaumanga leaving us top of our table and heading into the semi-finals.

Our semi-final was the hardest game we had played in the tournament and although our team did well we unfortunately lost and went on to play off for 3rd and 4th against Te Kuiti. It was a very close game against Te Kuiti with only two points in it, but they managed to come out on top which left us with 4thplace overall. This is the best result we have achieved at a Junior Ki-O-Rahi Tournament and the team should be very proud as there were several players who only just learnt to play the game three weeks prior, well done guys.

Championships. Olivia Goodwin, Zyann Avergonzado, Grace Lee and Mollie Allison all played in the North Island Junior Beach Volleyball Championships at Mairangi Bay on Saturday. Playing in the Year 10 girls’ division, Olivia and Zyann played impressively to win the silver medal after a long day in the hot sun. Along the way they defeated the other Matamata pair in an excellent semi-final.

Mollie and Grace bounced back from the semi-final loss to win the bronze medal match. A Long Bay College pair played strongly to defeat Olivia and Zyann in the final.

Congratulations to all four girls on bringing home both indoor and beach medals from Auckland.

Fishing Report

I

f you noticed the hair on the back of your neck stand up last week, it was probably the super moon. I mentioned that because it does have a noticeable effect on the feeding habits of fish – and in a negative more than a positive way.

The local streams are looking a picture at the moment. The water level is down and the clarity is much better. This time of year start using your lures and flies that best imitate insects. For a bit more advice come in and see us.

In the Rotorua region the lake surface temperatures are climbing – now at times, up to 21 degrees. What this does is create a thermalcline level where the plankton

settles. This in turn attracts the smelt and in doing that, the trout follow. What this means is its time to get the jigging gear out.

Another good place to fish in these hot conditions is the stream mouths. As the lakes warm up the trout head for that cooler water.

Down to Taupo, Ken Duncan, local trout guide tells me its well worth dragging yourself out of bed early, setting up your harling gear and hitting the water before day break. Ken also tells me the river fishing is excellent at the moment. Get out the flies etc that imitate small insects and you’ll be away. Also the lighter fly line weights help. If you are shoreline fishing,

Mural unveiling celebrated at Firth Tower

The Mark Madill Shed houses the “From Horse to Tractor” exhibition so it was extremely fitting to have the commissioned murals created to enhance the exterior of the shed.

The second mural depicts horse and plough – standard practice before the introduction of tractors.

ver the past two years a visit to the home of Anne de Silva might have left you wondering what she was up to with various bits and pieces relating to ploughing practices from over 100 years ago strewn around her studio! More so when you think she lives in a beautifully kept house in town!

Commissioned by Matamata Historical Society to paint two large murals for the Mark Madill Shed that houses the “From Horse to Tractor” display, the murals have been in the pipeline for the past two years.

Anne has spent literally hours ensuring her representation is as authentic as possible and correctly portrays images that fit the era. “Creating the two large mural panels for Firth Tower has been a real honour” says Anne. “It’s a thrill to see them up particularly given I have memories of watching horse and plough work being done next door to where I lived as a child. It’s funny that even all these years later, I can literally smell the horses when I think back

to that time of my life. Also, I volunteer at Firth so to have my work featured there and see it every day is extra special.”

Theatrical Thinking Last theatre report for the year and almost all this year’s productions are completed. The exception is Riverlea Theatres revue “Boobs The Musical, the World According to Ruth Wallis” which finishes on Saturday. Time now to look forward to next year’s productions some of which have already auditioned and been cast. Over at Morrinsville Theatre auditions have been held for their April production of the Sondheim musical “Into The Woods”.

At Cambridge Repertory’s Gaslight Theatre “12 Angry Men” has been cast and is in rehearsal for a March production. This will be followed by the play “Blind Eye” in June and the comedy “Blackadder Goes Forth” in November. Matamata Dramatic Society recently announced their programme for 2018 starting with the play “Biggles Flies Undone” in April. This will be followed by “The Great Matamata Radio Show” in June and the Richard Prevett play “Family Trust” at the end of the year.

Over in Tauranga Devon Williamson’s new play “Jailhouse Frocks” is auditioning for a March production at Detour Theatre. This will be followed by “Blithe Spirit” in June, “Driving

Hamilton Playbox at the same Theatre has the already cast “Allegiance” opening in April, followed by “Peter Pan” in July, and “The Vicar of Dibley 2” in October. Here in Matamata the Musical Theatre group have unfortunately had to cancel their planned production of the musical “Chicago” due to a problem with the rights, they hope to announce a replacement production soon. Looks like another interesting and full year in 2018.
