Impressive turnout to discuss End of Life Choice Bill T im van de Molen took to social media to thank attendees for their respectful engagement in the public meeting and debate he hosted on the End of Life Choice Bill in Matamata last week.

The meeting attracted a capacity crowd, with every seat taken in the Civic and Memorial Hall’s Tainui Room. The Bill, introduced by ACT MP for Epsom, David Seymour, had its First Reading in The House on 13 December 2017, passed by 76 votes to 44 and has attracted wide commentary.

Mr van de Molen voted for The Bill in its First Reading largely to enable members of the public to engage in greater discussion on both sides.

Mr Seymour, in support of The Bill, was accompanied by Ms Jan Gilby, the Co-Chair of End of Life Choice Waikato. Staunch advocate against The Bill, Hon Maggie Barry ONZM was accompanied by Dr Catherine Smallberger, a GP and Waipuna Hospice doctor based in the Bay of Plenty.

“I believe it's vital to engage with the community on such an important topic,” said Mr van de Molen. “It's an emotive topic and I'd particularly like to acknowl-

edge our guest panellists for having the courage and strength of conviction to portray their perspective to a room full of people who were not all in agreement.

When I was farming and over the time I spent as a volunteer for the St. John ambulance, I witnessed various difficult situations, which caused me to consider both the manner in which we treat animals compared to people, and what quality of life is. Voluntary euthanasia is a very complex issue. It is crucial to be as informed as

possible, and to hear and understand the pros and cons of this, as with any proposed legislation.”

The Select Committee is currently hearing submissions on The Bill. As this is a conscience vote for all Members of Parliament, Mr van de Molen will continue to seek feedback on both sides of the argument, and welcomes input from all members of the electorate, prior to forming his view in readiness for The Bill’s Second Reading.

Reeling in the end of the season

ven though it was cold, wet and windy, a good turnout resulted in the final tournament for the 2017/2018 season at Matamata Fishing Club. The prize giving and AGM will be held next month so if you’ve been thinking about becoming a member, have a chat to Bungey and the team at Sportsworld – or pop along to a competition weigh-in for a look.

A bit of a chilly start?

Making a noise for safety ive years ago after a NZTA survey, the State Highway area either side of Te Poi School on Stopford Road was considered a high risk crash area. The recommendation was to install ‘slow down’ signs and reduce the speed limit to 50km. Linda Larsen Principal of Te Poi School has been lobbying for the change ever since.

“Even though it was the recommendation of the NZTA, we were told it was too expensive” says Linda. “I couldn’t accept this, particularly as most town schools have signage. We are a smaller rural school yes, but our students are no less precious, and need to be protected.”

As it has been for years, students of Te Poi School don’t walk home along the footpath because it is simply too dangerous. As it is, parents pulling out onto the State Highway have to be extremely cautious given the speed motorists pass the T intersection.

After researching road safety, writing letters to NZTA, our local MP and the Mayor – even making signs and standing on the verge of the main highway for the past five years – Te Poi School have finally got what they wanted! A sign was erected last week and although all practical safety measures will remain in place, Linda, staff, students and their families are thrilled. “Highway traffic will now be aware there is a school here and hopefully reduce their speed - particularly during the critical drop off and pick up times.”

Putting the study in Business Studies ecently Matamata College held its annual year 10 business studies market which gives students the opportunity to design, make and market a product in small groups over the course of a school term. The aim is to make a profit at the market where every team’s products are displayed and marketed in the school hall.

Yvonne was in charge of the financing and budgeting, Ben was the communications director, also designing the logo and maintaining effective communication within the group, and Mikayla was the product and managing director. Yvonne and Ben shared the marketing directorship role.

“Mikayla and I have worked together before” said Yvonne, when asked if they were allowed to select their own group. “She (Yvonne) did all the budget last time, and she was good at it, so we kept her on the job!” laughed Mikayla. The team had the term to plan, design and make their product. They were ready a week before market night, and weren’t “stressing, like some of the other teams” said Ben. Other products featured at the market included yoghurt and facial cream, foot massage salt, scented candles, and soaps.

All items were packaged nicely, showing the effort these young teenagers put in to their products. Even with their business flare however, Yvonne hopes to pursue medicine or health science, Mikayla loves animals so would like to work within that field, and Ben wants to be a teacher.

Six years ago, when I also did business studies as one of my elections, our team tie-dyed white singlets and long woolen white socks. No one in our team had ever tie-dyed anything before, so it really was a hit and miss. Looking back, I’m not sure why we didn’t test dye on something else that was white. We sold each singlet for

Rotary rewards community service nn Duncan has been involved in many aspects of the Matamata community and her service over more than three decades has been recognised by Rotary Matamata.

Ann was recognised by the club as a community Paul Harris Fellow at the recent annual club changeover function. Club member and outgoing District 9930 governor Leonie Tisch was also recognised with a third sapphire pin to her Paul Harris Fellowship.

For more than 30 years, Ann has been involved with the Matamata Citizen’s Advice Bureau, five years as its chair and also served on the organisation’s regional committee for seven years. A real community-minded spirit has seen Ann also spend three decades on the National Council of Women (including a three-year term as President), six years on the Matamata College PTA committee and seven years involved with the Matamata Foodbank. Ann also has connections with St Andrews Presbyterian Church, Polocrosse, Pony Club, Daffodil Day and a number of other local community groups and events.

Ann, whose husband Lachie has been a Rotarian since 1988, says she was very surprised to be recognised. “Being recog-

nised as a Paul Harris Fellow is a very humbling experience,” Ann says, “especially when I think of the many people who have been recognised for their work in the community in the same way. I feel I have done very little compared to them. Nobody can do everything but everybody can do something. I just hope the small something I have been able to do has helped someone at some time.”

Leonie was also humbled by her recognition from her home Rotary club, following a three-year journey on the District leadership team, which culminated in her leading more than 1600 Rotarians from July 1, 2017 for 12 months. “I could not have done the role without the support of all the members of Rotary Matamata and I am very grateful to be recognised by the club in this manner. We have a fantastic club in Matamata and could be rightly proud of all that we achieve.”

Rotarian David Hulme was awarded the club’s 2017-18 Service Above Self Rotarian of the Year title for all that he has contributed. Outgoing President Peter Vossen says David was a deserved recipient of the award. “He does so much great club work behind the scenes and was also chair of the team that organised our District Conference this year.”

Locals host floral art area day atamata Floral Art Group hosted the Thames Valley Area Day at the Matamata Union Parish Hall recently where designers travelled from Te Awaumutu, Katikati, Hamilton, Bay of Plenty, Thames, Waihi, Morrinsville and even Papatoetoe to compete in novice, junior, intermediate, senior and premier classes. Each created a class specific design which included duets, baskets, bouquets and some beautiful designs based around various themes. A Club design was also displayed by each of the Floral Art groups with the collective theme of New York, New York.

President of Matamata Floral Art, Helen Williams, was thrilled with the turnout and said the judges had been most impressed with the standard of work. “It’s always tough on the judges in making placement decisions” she said, “I certainly don’t envy their position! It is particularly encouraging however, to see that our Matamata group placed very well throughout the different classes and that our artists continue to raise the bar competing well with some of the bigger clubs.”

Matamata Floral Art group was established 45 years ago and as well as competing in many regional competitions including the Area Day’s which are held three times per year, members enjoy monthly get-together’s where guest speakers and demonstrators are often invited, as well as providing the opportunity to share ideas and techniques.

Time waits for no man Matamata Union Parish It is true that we only live in the present. We can learn from the past and plan for the future but the only action we can take is right now – this instant! Of course we know that this is merely stating the obvious. However, memories are just recollections and unsubstantiated future expectations can be merely dreams or hopes in our mind.

Memories can be good or bad. Some we don’t want to remember, but at least try to avoid reliving. However, we can enjoy recalling the better happenings in our lives and use them as

future guidance as life progress, building blocks for our ongoing lives.

Hindsight maybe highlights the dangers of ineptitude, lethargy, laziness or no willpower.

On the other hand there are some who trust God to supply their every want and just wait for that to happen without making any effort to achieve it themselves. One wonders whether they are waiting for divine intervention. But consider, how much more should be achieved if they sought God’s direction in motivating them towards their goals.

“Seek and ye shall find.”

Planning for the future can be viewed in the light of either selfish or selfless objectives.

Love only yourself, or love God firstly, and then love your neighbour as well as yourself and family. Share the love by working with God towards extending his earthly kingdom. Join Jesus in worshipping God our Heavenly Father.

Think about it and pray about it. He always listens.

It’s later than you think! Trust him.

Success with POWERtalk OWERtalk Matamata is a club that helps people gain confidence and better their speaking skills that are needed in everyday life. Recently local member, Mary Cobham, won the Person of the Year, a national award at the annual POWERtalk conference in Nelson.

Mary has been involved with POWERtalk (previously named Toastmistress) since 1993 and, at the conference, was also awarded a 25 year of contribution certificate to the Matamata club and region. The Person of the Year Award acknowledged not only Mary’s commitment to her club but various community organisations. She serves on the committees of the Community Chest, Basketball Association, Matamata Historical Society, Matamata Genealogy branch NZSG and POWERtalk Matamata. This is an extraordinary achievement for Mary. Her friend and fellow POWERtalk club member Carolyn Hooton calls it a “fab achievement.”

Born and bred in Matamata, Mary previously worked in the Airforce as an aircraft finisher, a position that involved painting

the surface of the aircraft, and the safety equipment inside. Sometime later, she moved back to Matamata and joined POWERtalk to build her confidence with public speaking, particularly as her work as a herd tester involved giving presentations.

When asked how she felt about winning the Person of the Year Award, she was “gobsmacked” and “couldn’t believe that it happened”. Mary expected the winner to be someone higher up in the organisation - a humble statement from a woman that volunteers in various committees around Matamata as previously mentioned and brings a lot to the community.

“There are a lot of things I probably wouldn’t have done had it not been for POWERtalk,” says Mary, “and I encourage anyone that may lack confidence to join the club. POWERtalk has courses designed for different aspects of speaking, namely speeches and poetry reading.”

Another member of Matamata’s POWERtalk club, Mikayla Reid, recently won the club’s annual speech competition with her speech, Does Love at First Sight Exist.

She represented Matamata at the New Zealand speech competitions at the same Nelson POWERtalk conference. At 16 years of age, Mikayla was the youngest person competing and many people in the audience were impressed with her confidence.

When asked what interested her in joining POWERtalk, she cited her older brother Kaleb as an influence because of his increased confidence after he joined the club. “I was a very shy person,” said Mikayla. “But POWERtalk has increased my confidence within myself.”

Matamata club meetings are every third Monday and typically last around 90 minutes. You are given a speech topic to write in your own time, to perform during the session. Other members evaluate and give you constructive feedback. Mikayla finds this “very helpful” in building her confidence.

our years ago, after five years of planning and very careful analysis of his ABC strategy, our ex Matamata man Scott Donaldson set off on the remarkable journey attempting to become the first person to successfully cross the Tasman Sea in a solo kayak.

The ABC strategy was simple – “A was the master plan, B was the plan if A was compromised, and C… if plans A and B failed” laughed Scott when addressing Matamata Lions in 2014. “In all seriousness though, everything from training my mental and physical state to ensuring a completely adequate nutrition schedule was implemented to the enth degree” he continued. “Nothing was left to chance and every possible scenario was explored.

With intense training I had already encountered every condition I was likely to experience so, once in the water and on my way, the only thing out of my control was the weather.”

As it happened this, the weather, was the downfall of what should have been a successful Tasman kayak crossing. “You wouldn’t credit it; the worst storm in a 40 year history coupled with an unrepairable rudder - and with a team of absolute professionals behind me, there wasn’t any-

thing we could do” said Scott. “Making the decision to call the crossing off – even just 83km from land, was the only fit decision.”

His second attempt, again departing from Coffs Harbour on the coast of New South Wales on May 2 heading for the Taranaki Coast, covered 2200km, with around 3000km paddled. “This time round, it was more about that last 80km I fell short of with my first attempt” says Scott. “It’s about finishing the job and I set off hoping to paddle around 16 hours per day. You just waste energy if you’re paddling into wind of more than 20 knots, so the aim was to deploy the sea anchor, slow down the rate of drift and hopefully try hooking into a favourable current.”

62 days after setting off, Scott successfully arrived at New Plymouth's Ngāmotu Beach, inside Port Taranaki, last Monday night and couldn’t believe the crowd welcoming him home. “This journey has been epic, up and down, and a long story” he said wearily. “The last few hours were fantastic just seeing land and lights, and being able to come here right on target has been a perfect ending.”

Although Scott says every area of his challenge was difficult, he says that his first attempt was an adventure, this time it

was a race. “The last two days were a novelty because I hadn’t done it” he says. “I took my time coming in the gate because it was so special. It was very different to last time because basically, I was trying to improve in every area. The hardest part was not the distance, but the way the body of water works in the Tasman Sea. It’s so choppy and there weren’t many days that you couldn’t see three different waves coming at you from different directions.

That’s why the Tasman is hard – you end up with a washing machine effect!”

With design improvements to the original craft, Scott’s new vessel at 6.3m long and 0.76m wide, is half the weight and had a bigger cabin for extra comfort and shelter. When asked if he had fun, there was hesitation but the answer was yes. “Probably not as much as the first time because this was a race – but I do like to race” he said!

Beyond their expectations

ourteen Matamata Intermediate School students entered the Young New Zealand Writers competition recently, with an expectation of writing a 750 word story based on the theme, Beyond Expectations.

Selected as two of the top 20 entries submitted from around a thousand nationwide, Emerson Diprose and Marissa McGill were lucky enough to have their stories published in the 2018 Beyond Expectations anthology.

The story required students to incorporate elements of fantasy or science-fiction, so Marissa, a year 8 student, wrote her story about a Taniwha who hears about trouble from the land above from the mountain fairies. The Taniwha is troubled by what the land above has become since the last time he’d seen it. He is stunned by the change from the beautiful mountains he had previously seen to the pollution that he sees now. Emerson, a year 7 student, wrote hers about a town of the ‘Magical Potion’ where there was a magical stream that some people would drink from to obtain powers. The protagonist drank from this stream to get these powers, and one day the town was flooded. He decided to save everyone, but the magical stream was no longer there. In a dramatic irony twist, the flood was the magical liquid. The two girls are friends and are very supportive of each other’s successes.

Writing keeps Marissa and Emerson on their toes, as they both entered a zoological writing challenge straight after Beyond Expectations. Currently, they are working on the Elsie Locke writing challenge, another nationwide competition. Marissa hopes to continue her writing success and says she “loves entering writing competitions, mainly fantasy ones.” Last year,

Marissa’s story was also published in this competition. She hopes to become some kind of writer when she’s older, whilst Emerson is interested in pursuing beauty,

fashion, or the performing arts. Their success is shown in the work they put in and the opportunities they take.

Matariki in Matamata

L

ast Tuesday Matamata College hosted the first Matariki festival in Matamata.

Matariki is a celebration of the Maori New Year and an acknowledgement to the Maori King. For Maori ancestors, everything went by the stars, and Matariki is the Maori name for the cluster of stars that rises this time during the year. This is why the middle of the year is regarded as the beginning of the New Year for Maori. It is also the time ancestors gardened and planted seeds in preparation for the New Year.

Students from Te Poi and Firth school’s, Matamata Intermediate School and Matamata College had been practicing hard leading up to their performance at the celebration. They have also been learning about Matariki through the song and dance performances.

Beginning with a karakia, a Maori prayer used for spiritual guidance and protection, Te Poi School were the first to take the stage and delighted the crowd with their in sync kapa haka performance. “We practiced every Tuesday before lunch for half an hour,” said Mason, a year 6 Te Poi School student, “and have been practicing since the start of the year.”

how eager they are to learn and try new things, and adds Aaron, another Te Poi School student, “It was lots of fun!”

Next was Firth Primary School, who have also been working hard on their performance. Students were proudly wearing their Firth School shirts and matching piupius. They delivered performances that showed their dedication for Matariki, and inspired some of the Matamata Intermediate School boys to stand up and do the haka with them!

Matamata Intermediate School followed, and their songs involved hitting some high notes. The audience sang to the songs they were familiar with, and when Matamata College finally hit the stage, they too put on an impressive show that wowed the crowd.

The festival was a day of celebration through kapa haka. Parents and teachers were proud of their student’s achievements. Cameras and phones were snapping and recording left, right and centre.

The kingitanga (Maori King movement) was founded in 1858, and many thought that it wouldn’t last. 168 years later, the legacy of the Maori King continues and strengthens the Maori culture.

Fun at the EPro8 Challenge

he EPro8 Challenge is an inter-school science and technology competition and has been running in the Waikato/Bay of Plenty region for the past three years. Teams compete to build large structures and solve practical problems with electronics and practical maths. Each team of four had their own work station with a collection of parts and equipment to complete a number of challenges in a given booklet.

The challenges are of entertaining phys-

ical nature, and each challenge is worth different points. The competition goes for three hours which is not long enough to complete every challenge, so each team must pick which challenges they would like to do.

Each year, over 9,000 students from over 800 schools throughout New Zealand take part in EPro8. Matamata Intermediate School held the regional grand final for the Waikato and Bay of Plenty area last Wednesday and Thursday. The intermediate finals were held on Wednesday night, and primary school finals the following day.

“It’s about the teamwork between competitors,” said Andrew, the judge of the grand finals. The contestants were not allowed to talk to anyone outside of their group except Andrew, otherwise points would be deducted. The construction and engineering of these basic electronic experiments is certainly an achievement for these young students, with tasks many others of similar age may not be able to accomplish.

Rotary Matamata has donated more than $80,000 to local, national and international charities and projects in the past year.

The club held its annual changeover recently and outgoing President Peter Vossen says Rotary Matamata has been quick to support numerous different projects and individuals since July 1, 2017.

“We are a very proactive club and it is most rewarding to present various organisations with monetary support during the past year,” Peter says.

One of the largest donations - $30,000 – went to Leukaemia and Blood Cancer New Zealand from a Trust administered by the club for ongoing research. Rotary Matamata’s single largest local donation was $20,000 which went to local youth charity Starfish Social Services to assist with the renovation work on their new premises.

Following the hugely successful Doug Avery rural dinner, the club also made a presentation to the Waikato Rural Support Trust of $10,000 while $5000 was presented to the Westpac Rescue Helicopter following the 2018 Concert by the Lake event.

The club also donated significant monies to Rotary International charities including the organisation’s End Polio Now campaign, which is working towards the eradication of Polio from the world in the very near future. Other charities to receive support include Matamata College Interact Club, Christmas in the Park, Cure Kids, Days for Girls, the Matamata Hearing Association, Inner Wheel and a variety of young people within the local community.

“We have done a number of amazing projects in the past year and it is fantastic to see the hard work and dedication that members have put into them getting a payback with what we can contribute towards making our communities a better place,” Peter says.

Incoming Rotary Matamata President David Gasquoine was first introduced to Rotary through a funded six-week exchange programme in 1996 and said it is an honour to have been selected for the leadership role for the coming year. “The experience overseas was the beginning of my realising that we all have a responsibility to give back to society – be it in our local community or on a more national scale,” David says.

“Giving back to my local community is the real reason for my involvement with Rotary. In this community we can pretty much achieve or accomplish whatever we want to. Matamata is full of people who are generous with their time and money, people who will make things happen for the betterment of our community which is fortunate for all who call this town home,” Ending his term as President of Matamata Rotary, Peter Vossen welcomes and congratulates incoming President, David David says.

The team of Maddie Paterson, Lesleigh Gardiner, Lochie Buchanan and Alicia Rusk competed in the grand regional finals. Lesleigh subbed in for Otis Burt, who competed in the heats and semi-finals.

Matamata students enjoy Winter Olympics his week Totara Springs Christian Camp hosted the annual Intermediate Winter Olympics. Eight intermediate schools attended, traveling from as far as Blockhouse Bay in Auckland. Winter Olympics includes a variety of sports from football, volleyball, hockey and softball to chess, darts, and tag. It offers students the opportunity to compete in all kinds of sport.

Each game lasts for 25 minutes, and students rotate around for the day. Most sport is divided by gender, with some exceptions such as softball, which is mixed. The first three days of the event include heats, followed by semi-finals. Thursday and Friday are the finals of each sporting event.

In term four of last year, these students, then year 7, had the opportunity to trial to be selected as a member of the Winter Olympics team for 2018. “It was not only sporting abilities that qualified you, but also “good sportsmanship” said Matamata Intermediate competitor, Dylan. “Also, if you were not naughty” added Logan! College sports round-up

haven’t written a sport round up for a few weeks and as term two comes to an end there has certainly been a lot going on. We have had a successful cross-country season, Harrison Fountain competed at the New Zealand Secondary Schools Event and placed a credible 33rd out of 182 U20 boys over the 6km distance. At the Waikato Bay of Plenty event Khan Todd placed 5th, Edward Roskam 12th, Nikisha Todd 13th, Harrison Fountain 7th, Tom Allison 26th, Don Smitstra 27th, Cameron Jacobsen 30th and Liam Fernyhough 38th. We were able to maintain the Thames Valley Cross Country Shield, our teams (of 4 runners) won the intermediate girls, intermediate boys, and senior boys, we took 2nd in the senior girls, 3rd in the junior girls and 4th in the junior boys. Individually top 3 placings went Tom, Reuben Jones, Nikisha Todd, Liam Fernyhough, Edward Roskam and Khan Todd. It was awesome to see Harry win convincingly in the senior boys’ race, for his 5th and final appearance at this event, we will miss Harry not just as a super runner but a great leader and role model for our other runners. Our own school

cross country is not compulsory for our students and we were really pleased to have over 100 competitors participating in the 3,4 and 6km events this year. One of our Y11 PE option classes were tasked with running the event to work towards an achievement standard. To make the event successful the students were required to promote the event to the school, set out the course, marshal the runners, record results and times, then present certificate to place getters at assembly.

Netball is well underway and teams seem to be enjoying the change to Tuesday night games under the lights. We have eight teams playing at the Matamata Netball Centre, Senior Development, Junior Development 2, Junior A, Thunderstruck, Sweaty Betties, Junior B, Junior C and Hotshotz. New World College A and Junior Development 1 travel to the Harbourside Netball Centre to play in the Friday night Collegiate league. After the first round of play then promotion/relegation New World College A are in the Premier Div 1, with Junior Development in the Premier Div 3. Junior Development 1 and 2 also played in a

Thames Valley Secondary Schools Y10 competition on a Saturday. Both teams made the top four and played semifinals, Junior Development 1 went on the beat Hauraki 10A in the final to be the TV Y10 Champions for 2018.

Recycle and feed the birds this winter!

Rinse the milk carton or drink bottle with water and dry thoroughly. Have an adult help you cut out windows on each side of the carton. Mix your craft paints with a small amount of dish soap to keep them from peeling. Now, use the paint to decorate the carton. Set aside to dry.

Poke small holes through two opposite sides of the base. Insert a dowel or branch into each hole to serve as a perch. Punch a hole in the top of the milk carton.

Thread a pipe stem through the hole to use as a hanger. Fill the bottom of the carton with birdseed. Hang your feeder on a tree and watch the birds enjoy!

This has happened a couple of times recently when Cambridge Repertory society postponed a planned production of the play “Who’s Afraid of Virginia Woolf”, and Musikmakers in Hamilton cancelled a planned production of the musical “Catch Me if You Can”. Finding the right cast can be very difficult and frustrating for the Directors, and finding a play with a suitable part for them is sometimes difficult for actors. A case in point was the Detour Theatre produc-

tion of Noel Cowards “Blithe Spirit” that I saw a couple of weeks ago in Tauranga.

This was a very good production perfectly cast, each actor and actress looked right for the character they were playing from the suave Charles Condamine to the plump and rather scatty Madame Arcati. Several Theatre groups are now auditioning for their next productions but there are still a few production to enjoy this month. The musical “Dreamgirls” is on at Rotorua Musical Theatre’s Casa Blanca Theatre, while the murder mystery comedy “Where there’s a Will There’s a Murder” is on at Morrinsville’s theatre.

Chris Bungard i! Wow, another month has slipped by and here we are well into July already.

To all you farmers out there, good luck with calving – I hope it goes well and that you still get a chance to cast a line from time to time.

Many of the local streams are closed as of the first of July for spawning and don’t reopen until the first of October. The good news is that the most productive river in the region, the good old Waihou, stays open all year round.

Also two very productive lakes locally are Karapiro and Arapuni, also open all year round. If you are fishing these lakes try off the stream mouths. Trout are sitting there before they head upstream to spawn.

In the Rotorua region Lake Rotorua is fishing very well. The lake is quite shallow with an average depth of 6-10m. This means that you can be fishing very successfully with only 3-4 colours of lead line or harling gear. A very productive area is along the edge of the weed bank running from outside the airport and down towards the Ohau Channel.

Fishing Report To the Taupo region and it’s really all about the rivers at the moment. What you have down there, as in other areas, is the Rainbow trout heading into the rivers to spawn. This offers the anglers many opportunities. Firstly for the boat fishos, trolling off the stream mouths is very productive as the fish sit off them waiting to head in. Fly fishing in the stream mouths for land based anglers and this week, with very little moon, the conditions are good. Then of course, the fishos can follow them upstream and target them while they are in the pools actually spawning.

To the ocean. Let’s have a look at the west coast first. Dwayde Pinny, charter boat skipper, tells me the winter fishing continues to be reasonably good out west. Dwayde is fishing in 55 to 60m of water off Albatross Point south of the Kawhia entrance. In that area is large areas of worm beds and the snapper love them. The beds are actually in the mud rather than sand and with a good sounder you can tell by the bottom reading if it is sand or mud.

to say the fishing has become a bit hit and miss up there at the moment. The main reason for this is the cooler water temperature. The snapper become a bit lethargic and don’t feed as much. So what’s the answer – a bit of patience, burley up and be prepared to sit in one spot for a reasonable amount of time. The fish will come onto the bite at some stage and this usually proves to be more productive than running around all over the ocean. Later this week is the new moon and with that, bigger tides. This will create a lot more tidal flow that you can use to your advantage in the close in forms.

Over the ranges to the Merc’s and the Bay of Plenty. Once again its winter conditions, shorter and less aggressive bite times for the snapper. The most productive areas are along the edges of the foul and at the change of light.

For those who would like to head out and have a go at the southern blue fin tuna, they have now moved a bit north of Waihou Bay and are being caught out the back of Mayor Island.

For those chasing snapper there has been some reasonably good fish over the sand off Papmoa. The anglers I have been talking to are drifting with soft baits and slow jigs in about 20-22m of water. Another area going ok is along the edges of the foul ground off the western side of Motiti. A very well-known local fisho, Neil Dalton, bagged himself a beautiful snapper of 17lb there recently. Nice work Neil showing the young pups how to do it!
