NEWS AT THE NET May 2017 Edition

Hi everyone,

May 2017 Edition

Was it really over three months ago we had our ITF Perry NZ Open and Orbit One Futures events? The tennis scene has been steadily hitting balls over the summer with three tournaments held in the last quarter. The Rob Courtney Memorial Champs kicked off the Christmas summer period in Auckland with many of the local Auckland players turning out to support a tournament that Rob started and supported for many years. Also the Hamilton contingent went up and battled it out. Dave Venter won the final in a thrilling 3 set match against Punch Singh eventually winning 36 75 15/13 in a super tie break for the 3rd. Dave was very happy after waiting 18 years to win the tournament.

The Orbit One Futures held in Christchurch this time as a back to back with the Perry NZ Open was a great success and attracted some players from Australia. Great work by the Canterbury team led by Travis to stay on budget and complete an enjoyable tournament.

Next up was the NZ Open in January which went really well attracting 22 players, a bit down from previous years but some great tennis played. Japan reigned supreme in winning Men’s and Women’s singles titles. They are great supporters of our tournament and great to have some top-quality competition come to our shores and want to play in NZ. (More photos overleaf )

Following these highly successful events Tiffiney Perry and Sue Fookes are encouraging the committee to start looking for funding for our 2018 year. What would we do without these guys?? However, this is all hard yards for a few people so if there is just one job you can cover even if you are not on the committee please let us know. The “Get Involved” videos that were produced this year were fantastic and these can be passed on to people outside the wheelchair tennis community. The “Get Involved” slogan also includes all the Wheelchair players, so please help us raise our profile and get involved! Great to have Celia Patrick (TNZ Board Chair) supporting and interested in our organisation.
