Dog Sharing Our dogs, we love them but our life circumstances may change or our dogs may develop differently from what we expected. When these changes happen our dogs may not be enjoying life to the full. We may consider rehoming our dogs, instead how about considering ‘dog sharing’? Sharing is not for money it is about two people giving and receiving enjoyment from one dog.

home to study or joined the armed services but return home on leave. There are those who are now flatting/ renting and not permitted dogs at their premises. These are just a few reasons why dog lovers do not own dogs but would enjoy, in their spare time, interaction with dogs.
dog lovers could enjoy and share dogs. The February issue of Australian Women’s Weekly mentions Prime Minister Jacinda Ardern, dog sharing “…the family on the other side lets them borrow their dog when they need a pet to cuddle since the untimely death of their cat Paddles...”
The activities these dog lovers may wish to do with dogs will be just as varied. There may be the elderly person whose dog recently died. They have considered a new dog would out live them. They would still like the companionship of a dog from time to time to be nearby as they knit, watch TV or potter in the garden. A less active/retired dog may enjoy visiting. The energetic young may want a dog to run with not only for companionship but also security. A family may want to become more confident and learn about dogs - play in their back yard may suit them. A student studying animal behaviour may wish to take a dog to tricks or fitness classes to study that dog’s behaviour and use the information gained in assignments.
Dog lovers could inquire in their neighbourhoods, at dog clubs and veterinary clinics. Dog owners could also inquire in their neighbourhoods and at tertiary institutions. Then there are electronic avenues such as Neighbourly, FaceBook and the dogs share collective. Ideally sharing with someone locally would be best. Before handing over your dog though, do have a chat about what your dog can do, their commands; be sure the person is knowledgeable about the dog laws and understands dogs. On the first few occasions you may wish to accompany the person to be sure all is well. Dog sharing can be a great way to give a dog a full life.
