Welcome to the New Year. I hope that 2016 is an enjoyable one for you all and wish you all good health and happiness for the year ahead. What a huge 4 months we have had here at The Pohlen Foundation Trust!

Please let me introduce myself, I am sure that many of you are aware of who I am, my name is Charlene Conner and I replaced Judith Challis – our wonderful Administrator of 7 years - at the beginning of October 2015. It is fair to say that I hit the ground running with both the Pohlen’s Monster Garage Sale & the Real Homes & Gardens Tour all within the 6 weeks of my starting. This was followed very closely by our Annual Audit and AGM. Phew, those are now out of the way, but we are not sitting back on our laurels here. We are now busily organising our second Prominent Person for Pohlen Dinner – this is to be held at Longlands Restaurant and Farm on Thursday, 03 March.

In the month of February, please support O’del’emz with their coffee for Pohlen – a donation for every coffee sold will go to The Pohlen Foundation Trust.

We are in the planning stages for another debate to be held in the second quarter of the year – date to be advised.

We would also like to introduce our 2 new Trustees – Mr Stuart Koch & Mrs Louise Trower. Stuart is the Branch Manager at Nicholson Motors here in Matamata & Louise is a local business woman who owns her own HR, Marketing & Web-design business.

UPCOMING EVENTS Buying coffee in February will support Pohlen Purchasing a coffee from Matamata coffee shop O’del’emz next month will benefit Pohlen Hospital.

Throughout the month of February, all 29 days of it, every coffee you buy at O’del’emz will see a donation given to the town’s hospital.

The promotion is open to any other businesses wanting to take part.

Prominent Person Dinner – Introducing Mr Martin Sneddon Martin Snedden is a currently the CEO of Duco Promotions Limited, he is also a director of both New Zealand Cricket (NZC) and the World Master Games 2017 Ltd. Prior to Duco, Martin’s most recent CEO role was with the Tourism Industry Association.

Between 2007 and 2011, he was CEO of Rugby New Zealand 2011 Ltd, the company responsible for staging the extremely successful Rugby World Cup 2011. His book, a personal account of this RWC experience, “A Stadium of Four Million”, was published in 2012.

Between 2001 and 2007, as CEO Martin headed NZC during a tumultuous period punctuated by issues relating to terrorism, politics and player contract negotiations. He led the successful joint NZC / Cricket Australia bid for the rights to host Cricket World Cup 2015.

Tickets for the all-inclusive dinner are $195 each and available from the Foundation Office – sorry no eftpos Tuesday to Fridays 8.30 – 3pm.

During his own playing days he represented the BLACKCAPS between 1980 and 1990, playing 25 tests and 93 one day internationals including playing in the infamous “underarm” match against Australia.

Prior to his role of CEO of NZC, Martin practised as a lawyer, including 11 years as a partner of an Auckland law firm. In January 2012, he was made a Companion

2015 – Garage Sale & Real Homes & Gardens Tour Both of these events were a great success.

The Garage Sale had an amazing turn out of helpers, and there is no way that we would have been able to cope without everyone involved. We raised just over a whopping $5000 for the hospital and cannot thank our helpers enough – these ranged from Hospital Staff, Trustees, Pohlen Pals, members of the public and the wonderful Dalton’s Daisies who did an outstanding cake stall.

Our Real Homes & Gardens Tour Committee put in HOURS of work to make sure that the event ran as seamlessly as it did – thanks to Liz Atherton, Judith Challis, Joce Hoebergen, Di Louch & Arlene Swap – these ladies worked tirelessly over a number of months to make sure that the event was what it was. However a massive thanks must go to all 10 of the homeowners that agreed to put their homes into the tour. They were all truly beautiful homes and gardens and the diversity between each of them made for an amazing and enjoyable day. Fortunately the weather held out for us, and although the day was a little cool and blustery it was still very enjoyable.

Progress of the Palliative Care Wing – January 2016

The exciting news of course is that the main objective of our fundraising over the last 5 years is finally coming to fruition – with the turning of the sod mid-November, the construction is now well underway for the new Palliative Care Wing.

The roof was on just before Christmas and the Hinuera Stone cladding is being added as we speak.

We have had a look around inside and are very excited with the work that has been completed so far – we couldn’t be prouder!
