CONDITIONS OF ENTRY TO OUR SCHOOL In accordance with our School Health and Safety Management Programme and the “Health and Safety at Work Act 2017”, visitors must obey all reasonable instructions and signs whilst on site to ensure their actions create no hazards to people or property. Your site host will brief you on any specific health and safety requirements in the areas you are visiting.

You must be accompanied at all times unless you are inducted on our site.

Fire & Emergency Evacuation Respond to the emergency alarm. Your site host or other staff member will direct you if they are able. Refer to map below for nearest fire exits. Stay there if it is safe until the ‘all clear’ is given.

Site Hazards Please be aware of the following potential hazards that are present at our school.

Hazard Emergencies: Fire, earthquake, evacuation and lockdown etc.

Car Park: During drop-off and pick up times. Vehicle movements forwards and reverse, opening doors and tailgates. Goods and site supplies left on the ground.

People movements: Such as students running around corners etc.

Stairs: Trips and falls.

Slippery surfaces: Slippery surfaces, especially on wet days.

Flying objects: Such as rugby and footballs etc.

Site works; Caretaker and/or Contractors: Lawn mowing, building washing, cleaning, painting, ongoing maintenance and associated equipment including powered tools etc.

Asbestos: Building materials, boiler infrastructure and pipe lagging.

Dangerous / hazardous substances / gases: Refer to site map below for locations.

Actions to Minimise In case of emergency, follow the instructions of your host, school staff or warden.

Take extreme care during drop-off and pick up times.

Use footpaths where provided. Avoid walking on the driveway when possible. Put/leave goods in safe area.

Take care and be mindful of other people, especially when outside and of students. Be extra mindful when outside in play areas, across courts and the field during break times.

Caution when using stairs. Use hand rails. Extreme caution when carrying goods or when you cannot see the stairs.

Take care and be mindful of conditions underfoot, especially when wet. Wear appropriate footwear.

Take care and be mindful of student sports and play activities. Be extra mindful when outside in play areas, across courts and the field during break times.

Take care and be mindful of site works. Read and adhere to signposted instructions. Follow the instructions of your site host. Stay out of cordoned off areas.

Ask to see School Asbestos Register for locations.

Take extreme care and follow Worksafe recommended guidelines when working with asbestos products.

Take extreme care and be mindful. Follow HSNO guidelines when working close to substances/gases.

Wear appropriate protective clothing including N95cartridge / P3 filter enabled respirator and goggles.

Nag 5 - HEALTH AND SAFETY POLICY Matamata College is committed to protecting the safety, health and wellbeing of its students, employees, visitors and contractors and other persons affected by the schools on-site and off-site activities.

“Safety” includes both physical and emotional safety.

EXPECTATIONS  Health and Safety Committee is operating in the school to oversee all health and safety issues.  That the identifying and reporting of hazards/risks is the responsibility of all staff, students, contractors and visitors and this will occur through spontaneous reporting and consultation.  That a register will be maintained of all hazards/risks which will be reviewed with the view of minimizing the effects of the hazards/risks if they cannot be practicably eliminated or isolated.  That a near miss/accident register will be maintained which will be reviewed to identify, minimise and eliminate new hazards/risks. The Principal will report these incidents to the Board of Trustees.  That the circumstances of an accident or serious harm be reported to Worksafe NZ as required by the Health and Safety in the Workplace Act 2015.  That dangerous chemicals and substances be identified and a register for these be maintained.  That guidelines are in place for the handling and storage of such chemicals and substances.  That guidelines are in place for the identifying, reporting and dealing with incidents of abuse/harassment which includes physical, emotion and sexual abuse and bullying.  That guidelines are in place for the use and hiring of school buildings and grounds.  That procedures are in place to employ certified and approved contractors and these contractors have effective procedures in place to maximise safety and minimise risks posed by works being undertaken.  That appropriate training, orientation and supervision will be provided to all new and existing staff and contractor and health and safety procedures communicated on a regular basis.  That teachers will understand and use current best practice for student safety in planning all school activities both at and away from the school site.  That EOTC RAMS are in place and external providers are appropriately licensed.  That appropriate staff are first aid trained and a register maintained to ensure certificates are kept current.  That employees are supported in the early and safe return to work following an injury or illness.  That a register be maintained of all medications stored by the school on behalf of students and the administering of these and other medications/treatments.  That emergency/disaster management plans and evacuation procedures are in place.  The school will promote healthy nutrition, exercise and sun smart practices.  The school will manage risks associated with communicable diseases.  All students are to attend school every day required and caregivers to notify the school of absentees.

3. Assemble on the far side of the 1st XV field in front of the Bradley Gym in Group Classes until the ALL CLEAR is given.

STAY > LOCKDOWN 1. Everyone stays indoors or moves indoors and doors are locked.

2. In the staffroom or meeting room, make your way to the bathrooms and lock yourself in.

IN THE EVENT OF A THREAT TO THE SAFETY OF STUDENTS OR STAFF WITHIN ANY OF THE BUILDINGS AT MATAMATA COLLEGE, THE EVACUATION ALARM WILL BE ACTIVATED ON HEARING THE EVACUATION ALARM - EVACUATE ALL BUILDINGS IMMEDIATELY AND ASSEMBLE ON THE FIELD STAFF TO ACCOMPANY GROUP OF STUDENTS THEY HAVE AT THAT TIME TO THE EVACUATION ASSEMBLY AREA STUDENTS WILL MOVE IN AN ORDERLY AND QUIET MANNER AND ASSEMBLE IN GROUP CLASSES

EVENT OCCURS OUTSIDE OF THE SCHOOL BUILDINGS WHICH POSES AN IMMEDIATE THREAT TO STUDENTS OR STAFF SAFETY A LOCKDOWN IS INDICATED BY CONTINUOUS SIREN SOUNDS LOCKDOWN PROCEDURES ARE INITIATED AND EMERGENCY SERVICES ARE ADVISED IF NEEDED TEACHERS TO CLEAR TOILETS, HALLWAYS AND OTHER ROOMS ADJACENT/CLOSE BY GO INSIDE/STAY INSIDE ON THE FLOOR, AWAY FROM DOORS AND WINDOWS. TURN LIGHTS OFF, LEAVE CURTAINS OPEN. LOCK EXTERIOR DOORS AND DO NOT OPEN UNTIL THE LOCK DOWN IS DECLARED OVER
